Donald Trump, “The Most Militaristic Person in the Room,” Avoided Military Service Himself

A dangerous hypocrite
Politics • Views: 73,799

In his nutball speeches yesterday in Las Vegas and Phoenix, Donald Trump made a big point of boasting about how “militaristic” he is, and how tough he’d be with ISIS.

So this might be a good time to remind everyone that when it came time for Trump himself to serve in the military during the Vietnam War, he went all out — with deferments, that is. The Smoking Gun investigated in 2011:

However, Selective Service records reveal that Trump, the fortunate son of a multimillionaire real estate baron, took repeated steps to avoid serving in Vietnam.

By the time his number (356) was drawn during the December 1, 1969 draft lottery, Trump had already received four student deferments and a medical deferment, according to military records on file with the National Archives and Records Administration. An extract of Trump’s Selective Classification record, seen here, was provided in response to a TSG records request.

In fact, the December 1969 draft lottery occurred about 18 months after Trump graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied business at the Wharton School. So, while claiming that he would “never forget” being at Wharton watching the draft numbers being drawn, the 64-year-old Trump seems to have misremembered, as candidates are fond of saying.

Trump obtained his first two Class 2-S student deferments in June 1964 and December 1965, when he was student at Fordham University in the Bronx. He was briefly reclassified as 1-A—or “available for military service”—in late-November 1966, but that classification was switched back to 2-S three weeks later.

Another 2-S deferment is dated January 16, 1968, just months before his graduation from UPenn (to which he transferred following his sophomore year at Fordham).

Following his UPenn graduation, Trump—no longer qualified for a 2-S deferment—was again briefly classified as available for service on July 9. However, three months later, on October 15, his classification was switched to 1-Y, which was given to men deemed qualified for military service “only in time of national emergency.”

The 1-Y classification came a month after Trump underwent an “Armed Forces Physical Examination,” according to Selective Service records, which note the results of the exam as “DISQ.” While the military records do not further detail why Trump was granted the 1-Y deferment, a 1992 biography of the businessman by journalist Wayne Barrett reported that Trump received a medical deferment following the September 17, 1968 exam.

So once again we have a Republican politician who talks big and wouldn’t hesitate to send other people’s children into harm’s way at the drop of a hat, but when the chips were down for him personally he ran away like a coward and used his privilege to avoid serving in the military.

“The most militaristic person in this room,” as long as other people do the fighting.

Charles, may I suggest adding this article to the top of the thread as an update? It’s a pretty good CNN takedown of Trump:

Military analysts: Donald Trump’s plan to bomb Iraq’s oil fields not a good one

A sample:

Trump also said that “there is no Iraq” because of longstanding Sunni vs. Shia divides in the country that have come to the fore amid ISIS’ advance.

Hertling said that’s just not true and that “there most definitely is an Iraq” despite political and ethnic divisions.

Hertling points out that he’s remained apolitical throughout his military career but said Trump’s comments are “just troubling.”

You have to understand the issues a little bit better than just bombing things,” Hertling said. “This is very complex and there are hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who believe they do have a country.”

Bolding mine.

Lindsey Graham or DF? I feel sorry for him (LG) because he doesn’t get to bring his southern charm to the debate stage. Honestly, the GOP would be better served if they were to just put up a list of bi-weekly debates in towns around the country with 10 podiums and let it be first come, first served as far as getting a spot on the stage. Let the audience in, then release the candidates from the wings and the first ten onto the stage get to debate. Every three or four debates, remove one podium.

Air them all on C-SPAN. Let reddit/4chan, #TCOT, FoxNation, and whatever other Republican groups there are ask the questions.

Reince can’t control Trump because Trump feeds the base. (And feeds off the base.)

If Priebus wanted to do something about Trump, it would not be that difficult. Just quote him, then point out the facts.

Trump: ‘Mexico is selecting the bad people to send here. Listen to this man whose son was killed by an illegal immigrant (Jamiel Shaw Sr.)’

Fact: The guy who shot Jamiel Shaw Jr. came here when he was 4 years old. I don’t think Mexico sent him as a future bad guy.

But if Reince did that, he’d be called a Democrat. Here’s a tweet from a real one:

The Washington Post, in attempting to further fact-check Trump’s claims, notes that there is no evidence showing immigrants commit more crimes than native-born Americans. Immigration has gone up since the 1992, while the crime rate has gone down. And, a study by the Congressional Research Service found that immigrants make up a smaller percentage of the population in jails and state prisons than their percentage of the general population.

None of this scare-mongering is new to those of us who live on the border. Conservative politicians eager to play to the darkest instincts of their base have long portrayed the border area as a lawless region where crime is rampant and illegal crossers are out of control. The truth is, El Paso has had the lowest crime rate for U.S. cities of 500,000 or more for the past four years. When confronted with those facts in a recent interview, Trump laughed them off as if they didn’t exist. But they do.

[…]

A journalist quotes another journalistic source. No wonder Trump hates them.

I hate saying this, but Trump had a scintilla of a point on Iraq as a nation. Largely formed as lines on a map during Sykes-Picot, the the area has only been united by outside powers and larger empires.

Iraq was always going to fall apart. If Saddam died, or when we left.

Of course, Trump loses all points for not realizing that any successor states will need oil for the economy.

This is that goddamned hand wringing/No True Scotsman crap you guys do when it’s pointed out how batshit crazy the GOP has become.

I’m sure your relatives are nice people and mean well, but I’m sorry; this kind of GOP POTUS candidate did not just suddenly materialize out of nowhere. We are looking at 30 years of party leaders ass kissing the worst of the worst in the Republican party.

These are the same loons that utterly lost their shit by seeing a black man being legally elected POTUS twice. They’re driving your party now, like it or not.

You can protest all you want, but the GOP can be broken down into two camps at this point: the mouth breathers who go orgasmic over a potential GOP candidate being openly bigoted; and the “moderates” who cower in a corner, mewling that “Oh, they don’t represent us”, yet vote for them anyway.

And that’s the rub: you keep voting for the Palins, and the Bachmanns and the Cruzs, and Gohmerts. Instead of saying I’m voting for someone else because the Repubs are too extreme; or sitting one out; you guys go “Welp, they’ve got an ‘R’ by their name. Got no choice.”

I mean, for fuck’s sake, so what if Graham spoke out? The other 16 wannabes either looked the other way or fucking agreed with him!

This is three decades of kissing up to the religious fanatics and making code word speeches about “We need to save our country from those people!” This is two decades of pretending that Fox News is a legimate journalistic enterprise, and not the propaganda machine it really is.

Just stop with the whole “Trump doesn’t represent the Republican Party” nonsense. He does. He is the party’s ID, exposed for all to see. Until the party starts dealing with the root cause why someone like Trump gravitates towards them, we’re all screwed.

We need to try to help Iraq win, I still believe. But there’s also this:

ISIS In Fallujah: Iraqi Shi’ite Militias Advance As Islamic State Fights Back

Iraqi Shiite militia fighters are reporting progress in their push to oust Islamic State militants from Fallujah, a strategic city whose capture would mark a significant step in conquering the predominantly Sunni western province of Anbar. Shiite and government fighters this week made gains north of Fallujah during clashes with the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS.

However, ISIS mounted heavy resistance, sending car bombs to thwart their advances, Reuters reported. Shiite and government fighters were in control of the city’s eastern, southern and western approaches, though it might be some time before they attempt to enter the city itself, according to Iraq officials, the Washington Post reported.

ISIS has been building up its defenses in Fallujah since gaining control several months ago, planting mines to repel government forces. Tribal and insurgent sources told Reuters that ISIS had staged attacks early Friday in villages between Fallujah and Ramadi - a move possibly meant to head off a coordinated between the two cities, both of which have become frontlines in the battle against ISIS in Iraq.

Should they take it out of the money we’re sending them?

The Mexican government has gotten outside support for the judicial reform, including from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which has invested nearly $75 million. The cash came from the Mérida Initiative, a $2.3 billion program to combat drugs in Mexico, and has gone toward training state-level judicial operators, developing law school curriculum, supporting bar associations, and spreading information about the new system, said Nick Stokes, senior rule of law adviser at USAID’s Justice and Citizen Security Office.

You think it was cringe-worthy when Romney went full metal wingnut, only to watch him desperately claw back to the middle? If Trump keeps up this kind of pressure, the amount of pandering these guys are going to do is going to be frightening.

And we’re already talking about a crowd that includes extremists like Cruz and Carson. Shit, Jeb! was whining yesterday about Obama, Clinton and Kerry being too educated.

Just stop with the whole “Trump doesn’t represent the Republican Party” nonsense. He does. He is the party’s ID, exposed for all to see.

Exactly. The excuse is always “He doesn’t represent the Republican Party” rather than “He doesn’t represent me” (or “The GOP no longer represents me”). They can always forgive the party, even thought Trump is topping the GOP polls and drawing the biggest GOP crowds. That’s not the real GOP. They wouldn’t do that to me.

It’s delusional. Face it. This is exactly what you get now with your GOP vote.

No, because Trump is not about to repeat Romney’s “mistake”, in not being “conservative enough” he is going to continue full wingnut, and at least offer the people a clear choice between himself and the Democratic nominee.

Following the long Republican tradition of smearing educated opponents as “eggheads.”

Vice presidential nominee Richard Nixon, red-baiting Senator Joseph McCarthy, and FBI director J. Edgar Hoover smeared the Stevenson campaign as a bunch of “pinks and pansies.”

In response, Stevenson quipped, “I would make a proposition to my Republican friends … that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.”

What’s interesting is that in the new book Atticus managed in the past to get Robinson acquitted. Therefore presumably Robinson isn’t shot and killed while trying to escape prison.

We can therefore view the new novel as taking place in an alternate universe, one where that success managed over time to ruin Atticus’s views on race, because he was given a false sense of progress early on instead of having to confront yet again the horrible toll his community’s racism exacts. It’s reasonable to think that the Atticus from TKaM never would have grown into the Atticus from GSaW, because the failure to acquit Robinson and Robinson’s death helped reinforce his understanding of institutional racism. Instead his success made him amenable to the the anti civil rights movement.

Anyway that’s how I see it. Also this mirror universe version of Atticus has a goatee because Star Trek tell us that’s how this shit works.

101
goddamnedfrank  Jul 12, 2015 • 12:08:47pm

Also nobody has said yet how Jem is supposed to have died in GSaW. Did Ewell kill him? If so you can view this alternate universe Atticus’s response as a kind of community Stockholm Syndrome. He will have lost his only son as a result of his own ability to set an accused black rapist free. Even knowing that Robinson was innocent might not prevent such a person from rationalizing the death of their son in such a way as to eventually sympathize with the racism that motivated his killer.

Anyway, like I said, goatee.

Apparently they’re hoping to go forward with the original plan, which was to sell Bush as the “sensible” alternative to Cruz, before he took a nosedive in the polls and never really recovered. So now he’ll be the “sensible” alternative to Trump, by which we mean he won’t make bombastic remarks, but he’ll be pushing pretty much the same shit.

Via Ed Brayton—Trump on immigration 2012:

“The Democrats didn’t have a policy for dealing with illegal immigrants, but what they did have going for them is they weren’t mean-spirited about it,” Trump says. “They didn’t know what the policy was, but what they were is they were kind.”
Romney’s solution of “self deportation” for illegal aliens made no sense and suggested that Republicans do not care about Hispanics in general, Trump says.

“He had a crazy policy of self deportation which was maniacal,” Trump says. “It sounded as bad as it was, and he lost all of the Latino vote,” Trump notes. “He lost the Asian vote. He lost everybody who is inspired to come into this country.”

The GOP has to develop a comprehensive policy “to take care of this incredible problem that we have with respect to immigration, with respect to people wanting to be wonderful productive citizens of this country,” Trump says.

Trumps biggest problem is that he’s running a sprint pace in an Ultra-marathon that hasn’t even yet began. He’s also forcing the rest of the field to respond to this unsustainable cadence. I can’t see it ending well for the Republican field. Because when the correction finally comes and they all are forced to condemn Trumps racist bullshit it will be both too late and will alienate all the rabid supporters who find his rhetoric compelling.

I don’t really think Hillary is going to get 65%, but I do think it’s going to take a remarkably unlikely chain of events to produce a truly competitive Republican candidate.

BongCrodny  Jul 12, 2015 • 2:13:39pm

Dear Mr. Trump:

As one of your most fervent supporters since Day One, I note with awe your recent rise to the top of some Presidential polls. You alone are the one candidate who can restore this country to the ideals that exist in my head.

I suppose some days you must look back and think how easy it would have been to quit after your first, second, third or fourth bankruptcies. But you didn’t! Likewise, how easy it would have been to quit after your first or second marriages. But you didn’t! You got right back on that horse! (Please don’t think I am comparing the lovely Mrs. Trump III to a horse! I’m just kidding!! When you take the Oath of Office in 2017, maybe she will become known as the “First Babe”!)

When the time is ripe, I would propose you unveil the following list. If we can convince the other Republican candidates to sit out the nominating process in a show of unity, we have a much better chance of avoiding a H-I-T-double-hockey-sticks-e-r-y Clinton presidency, if you get my drift.

While I haven’t figured out places for everyone, I’m sure you’ll agree that this list takes our candidates’ respective strengths (“the good guys”) and shoves them mercilessly in our opponents’ faces (“the bad guys”).

The President: Donald Trump
The Vice-President: Sarah Palin
Secretary of State: Ted Cruz
The Attorney General: Joe Arpaio
Secretary of the Treasury: Rick Scott
Secretary of Education: Mike Huckabee
Secretary of Defense: Ted Nugent
Secretary of Transportation: Chris Christie
Secretary of the Interior: Mark Sanford
Secretary of Commerce: Carly Fiorina
Health and Human Services: Ben Carson
Secretary of Agriculture: Cliven Bundy
Department of Labor: Rand Paul

Of course, when you have a bench as deep as ours, even if one candidate can’t serve there’s a mirth of candidates who can take his place. For example, the young Italian boy, Mario Rubio, or any of the twenty or thirty ex-Governors who are running.

In some, I hope you’ll give this proposal serious consideration, for it is only through you and you alone that we can truly finish America.

Very truly yours,
Bong J. Crodny

P.S. I just thought up the following slogan, you don’t have to pay me for it. How about a couple of passes to one of your golf courses? Or letting me say “Your Fired” when your show comes back on the air?

Anyway, the slogan is this: “Vote Donald, and think V-D!” Pretty good, huh?

David Frum is such a great mind—remember, his latest tome “Why Romney Lost” is described thusly:

WHY ROMNEY LOST is a forthright analysis that offers a bold, hopeful plan for Republican success in the years ahead. David Frum urges a Republican party that is culturally modern, economically inclusive, and environmentally responsible - a party that can meet the challenges of the Obama years and lead a diverse America to a new age of freedom and prosperity.

Not only does Frum not understand tennis, he has obviously never met any of today’s Republicans.

Have you seen our death by gun rates, either intentional, accidental or self inflicted? I do not know of or have heard of, any effort/discussion/political belief of any kind to relax our gun laws - it would seem we’re all pretty comfortable with our massive price in liberty!

‘the Hill’

Strategists say Bush is smart not to exchange haymakers with Trump, who has a reputation for escalating fights and not backing down.

“The best way is for Bush to continue to put Trump in his place by saying his comments are only intended to generate headlines, they’re not based in real facts,” said Ron Bonjean, a GOP strategist and former congressional GOP leadership aide.

the call of the mild

When in the past 3-4 elections has a GOP candidate actually used “real” facts? Do they even know what they look like anymore?

has the government of mexico seen fit to address these accusations that it is “sending” criminals and drug addicts to the united states?

They just tell each other the Mexican equivalent of “Jake, it’s Chinatown.” since that’s been the Texas/Arizona/New Mexico border political rhetoric for about a century now.

A “State” is nothing but land. The right wingers think land should be able to vote—that’s why they love those red/blue maps and are so butthurt that their greater land area doesn’t win elections. “Cities” on the other hand, are where people are—and some of them are those people. Cities shouldn’t count because voter fraud voting for a living welfare plantation reasons.

Dead thread historical info:

[…]

On July 11, 1990, my world became a lot more black and white as a writer and journalist. The actions of Canada and Quebec shattered most of the illusions I’d been taught about a “Just Society”, the “rule of law”, and “honour of the Crown.”

The curtain pulled back that summer to reveal too many shabby people exercising power over life and death in order to preserve the status quo and white privilege.

I have to agree with you. Compared to 2012 there will be a lower percentage of white voters, and its hard to imagine Hillary getting a smaller share of the white vote than Obama did. This makes the GOP nominee’s path to 270 electoral votes very narrow considering how assiduously the GOP is burning its bridges to minority voters.

actually even though it hasnt been mentioned yet, there is quite a bit of inter-minority racism between hispanics and african-americans that may affect this equation

If Frum wants a culturally modern, economically inclusive and environmentally responsible party, why doesn’t he just become a Democrat?

They just can’t help it. White male supremacy defends itself by reflexively undercutting any and all threats. No insult or degradation is out of the toolbox.

On the subject of tennis physique, though - I didn’t realize until I saw the photo of Serena next to J.K. Rowling, how built she actually is. On TV tennis players always look small. I’ve never seen a pro player up close. But it makes sense that a woman who can hit a little fuzzy ball up to 120mph would be pretty solid. :)

Ben Rothenberg, who wrote the NY Times article, has a book called The Stylish Life: Tennis An entire culture has developed around this chic pastime. Witness a whole pantheon of tennis legends who combine athleticism with stylish flair while experiencing the charisma of such modern stars as Maria Sharapova and the charm of all-time great Arthur Ashe. From Wimbledon to other prestigious venues around the globe, tennis courts are a place to see and be seen

And speaking of career paths that make one go “huh?” Rothenberg has an anthropology degree and was a Census Bureau leader and a loan transfer coordinator before becoming a “writer.” Just the man I want expounding on female athletes and their body types. Spit.

Hence the latest brainstorm (though it’s actually been around a while) percolating through Republican-dominated State Legislatures around the country to go to a “proportional EV” system: i.e. one where EVs are allocated to Presidential candidates basically by Congressional district, vs. the usual winner-take-all deal now current in all but one State (?Maine?)

IOW, gerrymandering Presidential elections just like they do for Congress and statehouses…..

When they want to sound halfway respectable, they talk about giving an Electoral vote to the winner in each Congressional District, and the two unearned votes they get for having two senators to the winner of the statewide Popular vote.

I’ve seen mutterings, though, that the Constitution allows State Legislatures to distribute Electoral votes “as they shall determine”, and that means a majority vote in the lege could give all of a state’s votes to the loser of the Popular vote. I think they’re arrogant enough to do it—in Wisconsin, for example.

I really can’t see any state legislature simply canceling the presidential vote and handing their electoral votes to the GOP candidate, even if the Constitution allows it. The backlash would be enormous.
