Iran Nuclear Deal Reached, Conservatives Predictably Freak Out

The deal has been reached; in the video above, President Obama explains the rationale and provisions of the agreement.

As I’m sure everyone knows, conservatives all across America are predicting doom and destruction, like they always do about pretty much everything.

Also predictably freaking out: Benjamin Netanyahu.

But since Obama only needs one-third of Congress to back him on this, it’s almost certain to pass.

Here’s a thread for LGF readers to hash it out.

Anyone using “Munich” or “Chamberlain” immediately gets ignored by me. Especially since it’s the same usual suspects who said the exact same thing when St. Ronaldus of Hollywood negotiated arms reduction with the Soviets. Somehow, the Red Army didn’t end up in Paris. But they ended up OUT of Warsaw and Prague and Vilnius.

re: #16 The Vicious Babushka

The same people who think Iran is the number one destabilizer in the region because of their support for Hamas and Hizbullah (and back Assad in Syria) ignore that ISIL is a Sunni extremist group seeking to impose their version of Islam on the region and consider Shi’a apostates that are worthy for execution. They are among the targeted in Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere in the region.

The region is like playing 3d chess - there are moves behind moves and plays that take months and years to develop.

It’s not to say the deal is awesome and rainbows and kittens will be forthcoming, but a deal that creates a path to legitimacy for Iran’s nuclear program is better than one where Iran continues building towards nukes that it would likely seek to use not against Israel first, but against the Saudis and other Gulf States (who indirectly back ISIL and other Salafist terror groups, like AQ).

At the same time, a deal here could potentially bring Israel and Saudi Arabia closer due to shared interests (and a communal hatred of Iran, even though Israel as a majority minority country in a region that is mostly Muslim has more in common with Iran than Saudi Arabia). It has the potential to shake things up, but Netenyahu isn’t likely to move the needle on any kind of deal with the Palestinians or anyone else for that matter. He’s fine with the status quo, and will go after the deal because it robs him of a foil in Iran.

Sovereign nations that hold any power do not capitulate, they negotiate.

Totally expected - of course, no alternative is suggested or implied. Only that the deal doesn’t benefit Israel.

It is possible that the deal might empower Hamas and Hizbullah as it frees up funds due to lifting of sanctions at some point down the road. That would harm Israel’s security goals, but it’s not like those groups haven’t started wars during the past few years when sanctions were already in place.

And if the rise of ISIL is a bigger threat to the region and Israel, then getting Iran into that fight might overcome the concerns the other way.

apparently right wing ideology is more flexible than i thought

“A lot of these liberal churches that harbor illegal immigrants who are criminals say they are following the example of Jesus,” Jeffress, pastor of a 12,000-member megachurch in Dallas, said during a “Fox and Friends” segment on Sunday. Instead, “they are following the Jesus of their imagination rather than the Jesus of the Bible,” he said.

“Jesus was not this wimpy little guy who walked around munching sunflower seeds and saying nice things to people,” Jeffress said. “The real Jesus of the Bible said, ‘Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.’ That is: Obey the government.”

Oh geez…don’t go throwing facts like that into a perfect good RWNJ freak-out.

I wonder how many people understand that at one time Iran had pretty good relations with America. Our putting puppets in there didn’t help much and when they needed a whipping boy to turn the country into a religion state we became that target.

Maybe they finally understand that we need each other like back when they saw us as someone they could trust on the global stage.

And any sort of binding and long-lasting Middle East peace agreement is going to have to come from the governments of the Middle East. It is not going to happen due to outside governments prodding this or that country. I am still awaiting the citizens of the US, and especially the President, to realize this. For a while I thought Obama “got it” and wasn’t going to make the standard mistake of the administrations since Carter of thinking they were going to trigger some breakthrough deal that would cement their reputation as a foreign policy god.

They’ve shot themselves in the foot. Most presidents have accomplishments like this in the first half of their first term. The GOP’s childish tantrums have managed to delay Obama’s peak till the second half of his second term.

The early-success-followed-by-sag pattern ordinarily has the electorate ready to switch horses by the end of 8 years—Obama is going to hand Hillary (probably) a much easier sell than the usual “stick with us even though our big wins were 6 and 8 years ago” that most same-party candidates have to try.

History does truly seem to be repeating itself, as the hawks of the 1930s were also convinced that Germany’s appearance and proclamations of power were a bluff. That all they had to do was march out the troops and put on a show of force and the Germans would fold up like an umbrella. And if that didn’t work, then the resulting war would be short, the boys back home by Christmas, and they’d put that little hopped-up corporal in his place.

re: #68 darthstar

There’s a good reason Israel wasn’t included in the negotiations, and whether they accept the deal or not is irrelevant. Israel doesn’t trade with Iran, they don’t have a say in the embargoes on Iran, and they don’t have veto power on the UN Security council. They’d might as well be Palau.

I took Netanyahu’s statement as a veiled threat to bomb Iran. I don’t expect him to actually do so. I do expect him to be stumping for the GOP nominee next year, however.

re: #58 Feline Fearless Leader

And any sort of binding and long-lasting Middle East peace agreement is going to have to come from the governments of the Middle East. It is not going to happen due to outside governments prodding this or that country. I am still awaiting the citizens of the US, and especially the President, to realize this. For a while I thought Obama “got it” and wasn’t going to make the standard mistake of the administrations since Carter of thinking they were going to trigger some breakthrough deal that would cement their reputation as a foreign policy god.

Do you really see it that way? I think Obama is simply thinking it is better to have relations than not and that all the sanction haven’t done anything to improve the region or control Iran all that much. In a way, it is sort of how he views Cuba. I believe Obama is just being realistic which hasn’t been a part of American foreign policy in quite some time. The region is a mess, we helped make it that way, so it is best to start to repair things as best as possible instead of just threatening wars.

I think Obama has a better grasp than most. And the rhetoric hasn’t reached the other levels. And with Israel being totally intent on not making an agreement it’s obvious that there will not be much progress as long as the current set of players are in charge.

(Which does make sense for Israel in terms of the Palestinians since they are caught in a cycle of violence-truce-distrust with each other. What Israel has to do, in my opinion, is work low-key and with the other Arab nations to find the places where they have common ground and common interests. Everything will have to be covert and unofficial I expect since there are 70+ years of hate rhetoric and a couple of generations of people raised within that environment who are not going to drop it overnight.)

104
lawhawk  Jul 14, 2015 • 11:19:28am

re: #90 ObserverArt

There’s a bit of realism in Obama’s foreign policy to be sure. Cuba has no effect on US foreign policy generally, and normalized relations would improve trade and open up a market closed to the US for 50+ years. That could lead to significant economic opportunities for US businesses.

But Cuba doesn’t affect US security in the slightest at this point, and it should be clear by now that if the US can have normalized relations with Russia and China and Vietnam, then doing the same with Cuba is natural.

A deal with Iran is a different sort of beast - there are some reasons to oppose that deal - it gives wiggle room to allow Iran the ability to go nuclear and develop weapons (and you’d be able to work through the 150+ page document, many of which are just lists of individuals/organizations that are currently sanctioned or would have sanctions lifted).

That the opponents to this deal can’t formulate their own alternative plan to the deal speaks volumes - this is a bad situation that predated the Administration, and this is perhaps the best of the bad alternatives. It moves Iran towards a normalized nuclear position that is verifiable and open to inspectors. In many respects, that is what happened re: Iraq - the inspectors managed to stop and shut down the Iraqi nuclear weapons projects.

Another issue that requires closer examination is what happens to the money freed up by the deal once sanctions are lifted - does it go to militarization or economic improvements in Iran. Does it get funneled to Hamas or Hizbullah? Or do the Iranians take the fight to ISIL.

A lot of that might involve looking closely at what Iran’s interests are. The exterior agitation and America as “The Great Satan” propping up Israel will start to wear thin at some point.

1) they would have opposed ANY deal, AT ALL;

2) they pretend there was a better deal available without taking into account that this deal was only reachable by working with 5 other countries BESIDES Iran;

3) they present no alternative that isn’t exactly like Bush’s ‘refuse to negotiate until Iran gives up everything’ strategy that took Iran from 0-20K centrifuges;

4) they then say, “Who said anything about war?”

Well, that was quite the storm. Looks like the worst has passed my area. Reports all over of major flooding, especially in the Ohio State campus and Upper Arlington area. So far my power has stayed on. AEP is saying they have 8,000 customers out.

I was just out having a smoke and could hear the thunder and see the darker clouds coming in from the west. So it is almost here to the PA border now (as I am only 10 miles from the OH border).

Looks more like WWII German paratroopers than Waffen SS.

ETA: Sorry. They are Waffen SS.

What made me think they were paratroopers was the shape of the helmets. WWII German paratrooper wore a helmet similar to those American troops wore at the time, without the flange protecting the neck of the helmet worn by the rest of the German Army.

I enlarged the picture. Then the flanges on the helmets became visible and the leading trooper is definitely wearing a Waffen SS camouflage shirt.

My bad.

OK, so I watched the 8 minute video.

The PP dr. is certainly flippant about much of this. And there was a reference to a “$30 to a $100” amount for something, but it was a little vague.

One neat little trick the video makers do is depict themselves a “buyer”. But the dr. only mentions the role of “collectors”. And as Charles mentioned, the dr. also clearly mentioned the donation of tissue, not selling.

Would like to know more about the $30 to $100 reference, what sort of reimbursement that’s intended to be.

The aggravating things about the Right’s response to this are that

1) they would have opposed ANY deal, AT ALL;

2) they pretend there was a better deal available without taking into account that this deal was only reachable by working with 5 other countries BESIDES Iran;

3) they present no alternative that isn’t exactly like Bush’s ‘refuse to negotiate until Iran gives up everything’ strategy that took Iran from 0-20K centrifuges;

4) they then say, “Who said anything about war?”

Their alternative, like their alternative to Obamacare, cannot be spoken, because its utterly unacceptable. The GOP alternative to the ACA is eliminating healthcare coverage for tens of millions of people. The GOP alternative to a negotiated deal with Iran is full scale war and an indefinite occupation of Iran which will require the return of the draft. No wonder they won’t say it.

Sure, Satan is apparently involved, Big Time. And there are huge profits to be made. I give you the thoughts of one Freeper responding to a question about who would be buying:

To: Mygirlsmom; knarf

Pharmaceutical, researchers, and food companies.

Pepsi uses fetal cells to test their food products. Apparently specific cells can be used to test for specific tastes that Pepsi wants.

Easier than hiring food tasters apparently.

And talking about it in public.

Not sure what’s supposed to be so earth-shattering about the 8 minute video. Again, the tone seems a little flippant, and PP should explain the “$30 to $100” comment, but there’s a lot of slight of hand going on in the video (with the “order” form, the filming crew labeling the video to portray themselves as “buyers”), but it’s all pretty murky.

Of course if you’re oppose to abortion, particularly late term abortions, the discussion and accompanying graphics is just going to inflame you.

Which apparently, Iran could have had any time in the last couple decades had they wished to. Keeping the threat of nuclear weapons has been a higher priority than actually having them.

That brings us to the question I keep asking myself-if this is such a bad agreement, how would it be better not to have an agreement at all? The only things preventing Iran from having a nuclear weapons right now is their inclination. They wouldn’t be breaking any international laws by developing them. Why is it somehow riskier to have an agreement that they won’t do it?

Every time you purchase mass-produced processed “food” from the likes of Kraft, PepsiCo, or Nestle, you’re choosing, whether you realize it or not, to feed your family not only genetically engineered poisons and chemical additives, but also various flavoring agents manufactured using the tissue of aborted human babies.

It’s true: A company based out of California, known as Senomyx, is in the business of using aborted embryonic cells to test fake flavoring chemicals, both savory and sweet, which are then added to things like soft drinks, candy and cookies. And Senomyx has admittedly partnered with a number of major food manufacturers to lace its cannibalistic additives into all sorts of factory foods scarfed down by millions of American consumers every single day.

You know I am wondering if one of the things that is pissing off the Republican warrior types is the Obama administration is taking away some of their favorite fear mongering toys…like Iran and Cuba, LGBT folks, government help with healthcare, etc.

Maybe I was right about the con artist and the marks comment in #250. The Republicans seem to always need something to fear so they can ride in and save the distressed citizens. Well. not really ride in and do anything, just talk a good game so they can get the mark’s vote.

Obama has put a good sized dent in some of those scary things and while they are still flailing over it all, in time the fears might die down to the detriment of the GOP.

How dare that Obama!!! Especially when he is a lame duck. He doesn’t play this game in a fair manner.

That disclaimer makes no sense, though. ‘The intern created the image,’ but ‘didn’t notice’ the soldiers?

If the intern created the image, he would have had to have placed the soldier image in the flag! I doubt that any reputable photo agency would be selling an image of a US flag with money, the White House and Waffen SS reenactors in it.

Lame excuse. So lame it nearly makes zero sense.

If they don’t market fear and loathing of the other they will be forced to actually start discussing policy and improvements. And suddenly facts and having an actual plan that can be analyzed start to matter when you do that. Not to mention generally needing real bipartisan support to get that plan put into action.

Old, OLD conspiracy theory

Ah, found it

Oh, for the love of god. We in Biotech have been using 293 cells - which is a clonal cell line established in the early 1970s - since the early 1980s.

It’s a CELL LINE, meaning that it grows without stopping in medium containing nutrients and growth factors. It has not required anything from any human fetus since it was established back in the 1970s.

We use 293 cells because they grow fast, they’re easily transfectable, and with the right promoter driving the gene, they make a buttload of protein.

It is kind of hard to follow the conversation, probably due to the heavy editing. Also, who is going to sit through a 2.5 hour boring ass video?

The context is missing. It is really hard to know what the hell is going on. I believe the fees that were mentioned are for transporting to donated destination.

From Planned Parenthood’s statement:

In some instances, actual costs, such as the cost to transport tissue to leading research centers, are reimbursed, which is standard across the medical field.

If I’m not mistaken, that’s a painting of John Brown as Leon Wolf’s avatar. What’s the chance that Mr. Wolf ISN’T a staunch defender of the Confederate flag and “states rights”?

John Brown was an abolitionist, so that image by itself doesn’t really make out a case that Mr. Wolf is a Confederate. RedState is a mixed bag on the issue of open support of the Confederacy, and I don’t recall at the moment which side of that issue Wolf falls on.

Exactly. If all they’re making is $30, this black market thing sounds like a really bad deal.

And again, why a doctor would, in public, freely discuss an illegal organ trafficking operation, is mystifying.

This. Shipping living tissue must be done with cold packs, must be overnight. You need a lot more mass in cold packs than tissue, lots and lots of mass, so it’s still cold when it arrives, even if it comes from Florida and goes through Texas on the way to you.

We routinely pay $75 shipping charges for items shipped on dry ice, which has similar limitations. Shipping is not free. Packaging is not free. Cold packs are not free.

I am reading this now:

How Congress could kill the Iran deal, and why it probably won’t

Assuming every Republican in the House and Senate votes to disapprove the deal, 13 Senate Democrats and 44 House Democrats would have to join them to kill Obama’s veto. (If a vacant House seat is filled by a Republican by the time of the vote, only 43 House Democrats would be needed.)

Problem for Republicans is they already agreed to a deal with the White House where there doesn’t have to be a vote to approve the Iran deal, but instead one to disapprove of it. And they have 30 days in which to do so, 45 if they should try to make an attempt at overturning a veto. All he has to do is keep enough Democrats on his side in one house of Congress to prevent his veto being overridden and the deal goes into effect.

Added:

Well, reports differ, and there’s been enormous pressure from all sides to exaggerate the yield of all three tests. For that reason, counter to the usual, I believe the earlier reports more than the later ones.

The first test was completely consistent with nothing happening at all—just the high explosive detonating. The second, at 600-800 tons, has all the hallmarks of what was called a “single-point failure” where only one of the two detonators in a two-point air lens goes off. (Wikipedia has a good discussion of the Swan device, tested in Redwing Inca.) It’s called a failure because you don’t want any nuclear yield at all in that situation, but it’s undeniable that we had bombs flying around over our heads for years that weren’t “single-point-safe”.

The third test might have been an actual nuclear explosion—6-8 kilotons. India’s first test, at 12 kT, was so disappointing that they gave up for about 25 years.

Seriously, though, what use is an 8 kT device that you probably have no way to deliver, when our smallest strategic weapon is 150 and could be launched off a submarine at a moment’s notice? Even if you could somehow lob it into Seoul, that would be complete suicide. I just don’t find the threat credible in any way.

“Also predictably freaking out: Benjamin Netanyahu.”

Interesting that you call this freaking out. I believe he has actual valid concerns. Not only worried that Iran will not keep their word and still develop a warhead but also the lifting of the arms embargo (something which they claimed would not be lifted). The evidence is clear that Iran is sponsoring Hezbollah, how hard would it be to get them a warhead to smuggle into Israel?

I think he has actual concerns, such as the protection of his people. I really hope for the sake of Israel all these flippant remarks, calling this a freakout or wingnuts or whatever is correct.
