The Huge Right Wing Anti-Choice Fake Outrage of the Day

Fanatics are going after Planned Parenthood with another bogus propaganda video
Wingnuts • Views: 111,211

Well, there’s another bogus, heavily edited James O’Keefe-style propaganda video being frantically circulated all over the right wing media and blogs, attacking Planned Parenthood. Yes, again.

I’m not going to embed this deceptive video, but here’s a link to it at YouTube if you really think you need to see it. But the picture above shows the single most relevant and important part of it — this Planned Parenthood director was talking about standard tissue donations, the kind that are done every day throughout the medical profession. The “pro-life” groups circulating this bogus story are doing their best to portray this as something it’s not: selling body parts. They’re not selling body parts or “harvesting organs;” this is a flat out lie.

Planned Parenthood has now issued a statement about this latest attack piece from the dishonest, fanatical anti-choice movement: Statement From Planned Parenthood on New Undercover Video.

Statement from Eric Ferrero, Vice President of Communications, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

“In health care, patients sometimes want to donate tissue to scientific research that can help lead to medical breakthroughs, such as treatments and cures for serious diseases. Women at Planned Parenthood who have abortions are no different. At several of our health centers, we help patients who want to donate tissue for scientific research, and we do this just like every other high-quality health care provider does — with full, appropriate consent from patients and under the highest ethical and legal standards. There is no financial benefit for tissue donation for either the patient or for Planned Parenthood. In some instances, actual costs, such as the cost to transport tissue to leading research centers, are reimbursed, which is standard across the medical field.

“A well funded group established for the purpose of damaging Planned Parenthood’s mission and services has promoted a heavily edited, secretly recorded videotape that falsely portrays Planned Parenthood’s participation in tissue donation programs that support lifesaving scientific research. Similar false accusations have been put forth by opponents of abortion services for decades. These groups have been widely discredited and their claims fall apart on closer examination, just as they do in this case.”

The sentence I put in bold explains the section of the video where they do talk about money, specifically “$30 to $100 per specimen.” This is not a “purchase price” for the specimens — it’s for transportation and other incidental fees. Anyone who thinks human body parts would be sold for the ridiculously low price of $30 to $100 is (not to put too fine a point on it) a gullible idiot.

UPDATE at 7/14/15 2:56:29 pm by Charles Johnson

Another highly dishonest section of the video shows a web order form for medical tissues (labeled “ACTUAL ORDER FORM” in big red letters), strongly implying that this is a Planned Parenthood ordering system.

But in fact, this is from a website that’s unconnected to Planned Parenthood called “Stem Express.” The website is currently offline for maintenance as I write this, but here’s a Google cache link to the page in question: webcache.googleusercontent.com

This is from their “About Us” page:

StemExpress is a multi-million dollar company that supplies human blood, tissue products, primary cells and other clinical specimens to biomedical researchers around the world to fuel regenerative medicine and translational research. Founded in 2010, we offer the largest variety of raw material in the industry, as well as fresh, fixed and cryopreserved human primary cells.

Our Products and Services StemExpress is the only company of its kind to both procure tissues and isolate cells for researchers’ individual needs in its own labs. Our human tissue products range from fetal to adult and healthy to diseased, and we also collect bone marrow and leukapheresis for isolation. In our state-of-the-art laboratory, we isolate and culture primary human somatic, progenitor and stem cells. Using the most up-to-date technology, we guarantee every sample delivers the purity, viability and quality your investigators need. StemExpress is also a Contract Research Organization (CRO) and provides biopharmaceutical development, biologic assay development, commercialization, preclinical research, clinical research, and clinical trials management.

Our Promise Working with hospitals and clinics across the United States, all human tissue and blood procurement is performed in accordance with IRB-approved protocols and consents. Protecting the privacy of our researchers and donors is always the highest priority at StemExpress. Our team is driven by the knowledge that our products and services are helping researchers develop better means of preventing, diagnosing and treating disease. Our goal is to build strong, responsive and long-lasting relationships with our clients and we take pride in our researcher-oriented approach. By partnering with StemExpress, you’ll get the high quality samples you need so that you can focus on the research.

The video tries to picture this as some kind of sinister on-demand ordering system for fetal organs, connected to Planned Parenthood — and this is totally false. In fact, it’s a highly reputable company that performs a vitally necessary service for medical research.

UPDATE at 7/14/15 5:00:16 pm by Charles Johnson

According to Snopes.com, the leader of the anti-choice group responsible for this video, the Center for Medical Progress, is a friend and associate of none other than James O’Keefe — and a former classmate of none other than cyberstalker Chuck C. Johnson.

An individual named David Daleiden has been widely credited as the “leader” of the Center for Medical Progress. While Daleiden’s online footprint is minimal, a 2009 Claremont University article (penned by fellow conservative activist Chuck Johnson) reported:

James O’Keefe is a friend of David Daleiden’s. O’Keefe and Hannah Giles have been going coast to coast documenting instances of ACORN employees willingly giving advice on how to avoid paying taxes and shielding a would be pimp (running for congress) and a prostitutent from the watchful eye of the law. They’ve brought their investigation to New York City, Washington D.C., and Baltimore.

O’Keefe came to prominence in 2009 after he published deceptively edited videos targeting agencies such as ACORN.

I’m an organ donor. Does that make me a body part trafficker? Should I have asked for more money than giving them away for free? $30 - $100 seem fair?

Ponder the “elite” concept of actual evidence.

It gets crazier by the minute the more I think about it.

Some nifty slight of hand video, some frankly disturbing abortion discussion, but beyond that, zilch.

But again, some of the tweets by otherwise moderate people on Twitter made this sound like the expose of the century.

I can attest. I am a co-investigator on a post-mortem tissue collection protocol. We spent nearly 2 years developing the protocol following numerous studies to address ethical concerns of providers, patients, and family members. The protocol was reviewed and revised 6 times to address scientific review and institutional review board concerns. This is no trivial issue.

Planned Parenthood Opens $8 Billion Abortionplex

TOPEKA, KS—Planned Parenthood announced Tuesday the grand opening of its long-planned $8 billion Abortionplex, a sprawling abortion facility that will allow the organization to terminate unborn lives with an efficiency never before thought possible.

During a press conference, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards told reporters that the new state-of-the-art fetus-killing facility located in the nation’s heartland offers quick, easy, in-and-out abortions to all women, and represents a bold reinvention of the group’s long-standing mission and values.

“Although we’ve traditionally dedicated 97 percent of our resources to other important services such as contraception distribution, cancer screening, and STD testing, this new complex allows us to devote our full attention to what has always been our true passion: abortion,” said Richards, standing under a banner emblazoned with Planned Parenthood’s new slogan, “No Life Is Sacred.” “And since Congress voted to retain our federal funding, it’s going to be that much easier for us to maximize the number of tiny, beating hearts we stop every day.”

We’ve been down this road before.

The accusation that Planned Parenthood is illegally selling the organs of fetuses is not new among anti-abortion advocates. The controversy gained national attention in 2000, following the publication of an undercover investigation by a Texas-based anti-abortion group, Life Dynamics, which was also involved in the Tuesday release.

The investigation’s conclusion, that a Kansas clinic affiliated with Planned Parenthood was participating in a scheme to profit from the sale of fetal tissues, prompted a 20/20 hidden camera investigation on the subject, and a hearing of the Subcommittee on Health and Environment in the House of Representatives.

The FBI also investigated the Kansas clinic for any wrongdoing, but later concluded that it did not break any laws.

Perfect propaganda for an idiot base. The media will love hashing it over and over and over. And when the dust settles it won’t matter that it was a piece of propaganda. Planned Parenthood will lose more funding and fewer women will get care.

There has got to be blow back out there somewhere…sometime.

They keep this crap up and ruin more and more good services and programs and it has got to touch the people to the point they are going to be asking what the hell happened.

It is sad in that it always comes too late, many times after all the damage is done and then it all needs to be rebuilt.

And I just remembered…tomorrow is Jade Helm start up. Damn this is going to a week full of RWNJ outrage and sleazy GOP pols and their crappy media mavens feeding on it all.

Video and soundbites always trump fact.

I had someone tell me that the verifiable fact that the text of the ACA was available on line for 3 1/2 months was not as important as Nancy Pelosi’s poorly articulated soundbite about passing it to find out what’s in it.

Scott Walker calls minimum wage a ‘really lame’ idea from Democrats

Gov. Scott Walker appeared to target the national minimum wage on Monday night, calling it one of the “really lame ideas” being backed by Democrats.

Walker made his comments in a long interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News at the Waukesha County Expo Center immediately after his speech formally announcing his 2016 presidential bid.

Walker said the “path to a Republican win in the presidency comes right through the Midwest.” The Republican governor added that he’s been able to energize the base and energize independents, saying they “want someone to stand up for the American worker.”

“The left claims that they’re for American workers and they’ve just got really lame ideas — things like the minimum wage,” Walker said. “Instead of focusing on that, we need to talk about how we get people the skills and the education and the qualifications that they need to take on the careers that pay far more than the minimum wage.”

GOP is so fucked.

A new poll finds business mogul Donald Trump leading the crowded field of contenders for the Republican presidential nomination for the first time, but falling short when matched up against Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

The USA Today/Suffolk University placed Trump first among Republicans with 17% of those surveyed saying he’s their top pick for the nomination. The only other GOPer to crack double digits is former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who garnered support from 14% of those polled.

I really thought I could not despise the right wing more than I did a few weeks ago. After the past week, though, I realize I was wrong: They are more despicable than even I had ever imagined. These people, including (or perhaps especially) the base, are willful liars, who revel in their lies, for whom lies are a way of life. Whether inciting attacks on census takers and US troops on exercise or slandering health care providers, it seems that the more evil and destructive a lie, the better they like it.
This is not an issue for politics, it is a matter for mental health professionals and criminologists. Unfortunately, the liar movement couches its vicious assaults in political terms. I believe they do this purely to avail themselves of the protection their evil conduct and depraved values would not otherwise have.

I’ve asked this many times over the years, and I’ll ask it again…

If life truly begins at the moment of conception… then should we not also be talking about the “genocide” happening in fertility clinics? Doctors routinely harvest an “overage” of eggs from the woman… maybe 8-12 of those eggs are successfully fertilized, and become the zygotes. Two or three of the zygotes are implanted, hoping that at least one successfully attaches to the uterine wall.

The rest of the zygotes—at this point, by some definitions, “human beings”—are discarded. Destroyed.

re: #187 Agnostick

I’ve asked this many times over the years, and I’ll ask it again…

If life truly begins at the moment of conception… then should we not also be talking about the “genocide” happening in fertility clinics? Doctors routinely harvest an “overage” of eggs from the woman… maybe 8-12 of those eggs are successfully fertilized, and become the zygotes. Two or three of the zygotes are implanted, hoping that at least one successfully attaches to the uterine wall.

The rest of the zygotes—at this point, by some definitions, “human beings”—are discarded. Destroyed.

I’m sure you’ve been answered before and have disregarded what you have been told. I don’t want to argue with you, so I will say this once:

There’s a difference between ‘human life’ and a ‘human person’. Zygotes are not people, even thought they are human.

This is the problem with binary thinking. You need everything to be EITHER one thing OR another.

You can’t accept the concept that a fertilized ovum isn’t yet a human being, but rather BECOMES one over the course of 9 months, with no point at which you can say, “Before this point it was NOT a human being. After this point, it WAS a human being’.

So you’re stuck with the ‘moment’ of fertilization - which is itself not an event, but rather a process.

It also leaves you unable to compromise, since every position must be either GOOD, or EVIL, and why would you compromise with evil?

The same mindset that insists a fertilized ovum should have all the same rights as postnatal human also cannot accept any deal with Iran that leaves Iran with ANYTHING, because Iran is EVIL!, and why would you compromise with evil?

FSM save me from a country run by binary thinkers.

They’re not “selling fetal liver for $2,240”, they’re selling specific cells isolated from fetal liver - CD34+ progenitor cells. These are living cells that must be dispersed from a solid tissue, labeled with an antibody, possibly several, and then sorted on a FACS sorter - a $250,000 machine - and then possibly carefully cultured in specific, defined media to expand them.

In their minds, there’s a perfect deal where we can force Iran to give up her nuclear program, turn over every piece of equipment, and allow us to check everywhere including the Ayatollah’s back teeth to make sure they’re not hiding anything. And anything short of that perfect deal allows Iran the breathing room and time to continue developing a bomb, which is actually worse than no deal because they believe that the sanctions which presently are squeezing Iran will be maintained if we just decide to do so. Remember, they think that the rest of the world follows our every command, so if we want those sanctions to remain or be tightened, countries like Russia and China will bow to our will.

Actually wrenchwench nailed it. It’s always a human being, but it can’t be a person until it’s reached the capacity for self awareness. In other words, the term human being is useless, since at its root it’s a species designation which is completely divorced from how we legally determine where rights terminate at the end of life, upon brain death.

Of course, what the wingnuts won’t admit is that there is nothing short of war that will allow us to shut down Iran’s nuclear program totally. It is simply too far developed and too widespread for us to ever be totally sure, and the same restriction means any talk of a bombing campaign is foolhardy. Any talk about tightening sanctions is foolhardy because the rest of the world is not going to go along, we had to twist arms and pull teeth just to get to the point where we could force Iran to the bargaining table.

Strictly speaking yes in that it possesses an entire human chromosome and exists. That’s how I break down the term human being. It’s both so broad and arbitrary as to be utterly meaningless within any reasonable ontological debate over the nature of rights.

I’d have to disagree with you there. A cell line derived from a tumor has a whole human genome (46 chromosomes), and is living, and can be kept living long after the human from which it was derived has died (see Henrietta Lacks and HeLa cells). It is not in any real sense a human being.

There’s ‘human’ as an adjective, and ‘human being’ as a noun. The cell line is unquestionably human, but it’s not a being in any reasonable sense of the word.

So, sorry if I am a little keyed-up today. It was supposed to be the day of the trial of the woman who hit me with her car, but yesterday at 4 PM we got a phone call to come to the courthouse by 4:30 to be at the hearing where she takes the guilty plea that was offered with the ‘no jail time’ enticement. I didn’t know she still had that option. So we went to the courthouse, and withing half an hour we were done. Since I had already posted on the door that I would be closed today, I took the day off.

There’s ‘human’ as an adjective, and ‘human being’ as a noun. The cell line is unquestionably human, but it’s not a being in any reasonable sense of the word.

Many members of Lacks’ family strongly disagree. You can argue, and many have, that their understanding of the status of the cells is unscientific and wrong, but that doesn’t negate the existence of their point of view. Also interesting in light of the current topic is the fact that those cells were harvested, grown, distributed and profited from without either Henrietta’s or her surviving family’s consent.

Put it this way, if tomorrow we discovered a fully sentient non-threatening alien species only the most “inhuman” among us would use their non-human status to justify torturing and murdering them. That alone should illustrate why the term “human being” is meaningless within the debate over where and when rights begin. We can parse it down so as to mean what we want it to, and that’s exactly the problem when it comes to conflating it with personhood.

I think you’re conflating the concept of being with the concept of part of a being. I.e. the cells were Henrietta Lacks’ property, a part of her, for the use of which she should have been allowed to give consent. But since we can’t reconstitute them into anything resembling Henrietta Lacks, they are not a human being, any more than John Wayne Bobbitt’s dick was while it lay on the side of the road.

The reason you don’t torture and kill extraterrestrial aliens is not because they’re human, because they aren’t. It’s because they’re beings.

In other words it’s no accident that the anti-choice faction strongly prefers to discuss abortion using the terms “human being” and “life.” If you insist on utilizing those terms within your argument you’re placing it upon a foundation that they deliberately constructed. Talking about personhood instead simultaneously bypasses that and gets to the real meat of the issue.

America needs to grow more popcorn.

Actually, this bit of wingnut performance art is more like the completely mindless vs. those with a (wingnut) grasp of reality.

Trumpism is by no means limited to immigration. I fully expect to see Trump to aggressively pander to the GOP base against marriage equality, once the fuss over the immigration demagoguery dies down a bit.

Race is the big question mark —— if Trump goes all out with a Cliven Bundy style ‘let me tell you about the n*****’ rant, his supporters will pass out from joy, while the GOP establishment will have collective apoplexy.

June hottest on record: Japan Meteorological Agency

Last month was the hottest June on record by a wide margin, Japan Meteorological Agency said, increasing the likelihood that 2015 will also be the warmest.

Global surface temperatures were 0.41 degrees above the 1981-2010 average in June, the largest such anomaly in records going back to 1891, according to preliminary data from the state agency.

The previous warmest June came just last year, when the departure from the long-run average was 0.33 degrees, indicating a sizeable jump in 2015.

Cruz would be an excellent choice for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, even its chief justice, replacing Roberts, should Trump gained the White house. However, Sen Cruz is a statutory U.S. citizen at birth rather than an Art. II §I Cl. 5 natural born Citizen. Hopefully, this point can be addressed with Mr. Trump before such a deal can be cast in stone.

Jeb Bush decides to weigh in after his advisers come up with something the Magical Balance Fairy would approve.

“Whether it’s Donald Trump or Barack Obama, their rhetoric of divisiveness is wrong,” the former Florida governor said. “A Republican will never win by striking fear in people’s hearts. A Republican can win and will win if we have an aspirational message that gives people hope that their lives will be better if we apply conservative principles the right way.”

Old Jeb sure doesn’t know much about his party.

What’s the Jebster saying here? That both Trump and Obama are not Republicans or that Obama is, and he along with Trump are scaring people?

That is a very clumsy statement. I think we are getting more and more indications that Jeb isn’t as smart as sold. Or, as many suspect, he is going through the motions and can’t be bothered to think this through. No matter what he is running an odd campaign.

The worst part is that because of binary thinking, they can’t accomodate the idea that soot, or aerosols might have had a slight cooling effect, which has since been completely overridden by the CO2 effect.

But really it boils down to ‘I don’t want to believe it, so it can’t be true, which means any evidence for it must be faked’.

Destroyed.

shadygrovefertility.com

cnn.com

Hmmm. I see this got quite a few down dings.

I guess I see the comment as being a bit sarcastic, asking why the anti abortion crowd is not going after fertility clinics like they do abortion clinics and PP. I looked at this posters other comments and he/she doesnt seem to be a nutjob.

These types admire Trump for being a “straight talker.” Never mind that he hasn’t (as far as I know) spelled out how he’s going to implement all his plans - just hearing the red meat that usually comes down to “all your problems are someone else’s fault” is sufficient for support.
