Joanna Teters is the singer for Drew Ofthe Drew, whose video I posted a few days ago, and this is another great band she sings for. Really cool to see young musicians bringing funk and R&B traditions into the modern age.

Official music video for “Reach Out” by Mad Satta, from their album “Comfort”.

Immediately off-topic from the previous thread (I consider this acceptable for the overnight jams):

Dammit, logged on late and missed the fireworks.

Good baseball game, though.

A flounce? A troll? Fill me in, please?

Dire Straits (a user, not the band) was insulting Charles, Alouette and The War TARDIS, but mostly Charles. Something to do with the Iran deal and latent hostility toward anyone associated with LGF.

Not even worth grilling. Very gamey meat. You didn’t miss much.

This is the guts of what troll said, “Charles is fat and washed up. LGF readers are a bunch of robots. Since you support the Iran deal you’re all a bunch of anti semitics.” Went on for a good dozen comments or so. Totally uninspired.

I wonder when this Onion article from four years ago will start being passed around conservative circles as legitimate.

TOPEKA, KS—Planned Parenthood announced Tuesday the grand opening of its long-planned $8 billion Abortionplex, a sprawling abortion facility that will allow the organization to terminate unborn lives with an efficiency never before thought possible.

During a press conference, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards told reporters that the new state-of-the-art fetus-killing facility located in the nation’s heartland offers quick, easy, in-and-out abortions to all women, and represents a bold reinvention of the group’s long-standing mission and values.

“Although we’ve traditionally dedicated 97 percent of our resources to other important services such as contraception distribution, cancer screening, and STD testing, this new complex allows us to devote our full attention to what has always been our true passion: abortion,” said Richards, standing under a banner emblazoned with Planned Parenthood’s new slogan, “No Life Is Sacred.” “And since Congress voted to retain our federal funding, it’s going to be that much easier for us to maximize the number of tiny, beating hearts we stop every day.”

And the fetuses are not really babies, as they are not fully formed. These people use “baby” to create the image of an adorable, cooing, fully formed infant in the crib. Such a creature does not exist during the first 20 weeks in utero

Collin County Residents Condemn Proposal For Muslim Cemetery

FARMERSVILLE (cbsdfw.com) - A proposal for a cemetery operated by the Islamic Association of Collin County was greeted with fear and condemnation in Collin County. People are in an uproar.

“We used to grow onions here. We sure enough don’t want to be growing bodies,” said Farmersville resident Mont Hendrick.

But if the undeveloped land off highway 380 becomes a Muslim cemetery, Hendrick and fellow resident Troy Gosnell will have a major problem with it.

“This is not a money maker for the city of Farmersville. It doesn’t conform,” said Gosnell.

It has generated opposition from people who don’t want Muslims in the small town of 3000. Some residents even question how they bury their dead.

“When somebody dies they bury them at that time. They don’t know whether they were shot, diseased or anything else. All they do is wrap them in a sheet from the grave and bury them,” said Gosnell.

Concerns were raised that the Muslim burial practice could impact the town’s drinking water.
[…]
Farmersville city council members didn’t even discuss the cemetery Tuesday night since it isn’t ready for a vote. But residents have organized and some are making threats to keep it from being approved. Some are threatening to dump pigs blood and put pigs heads on a post so Muslims won’t buy the land.

For those of you who don’t know the area, this is about 10 miles north of Garland, where Pamela Geller staged her “draw Muhammad” hatefest and 5 miles east of McKinney, site of the recent incident of a power-tripping cop assaulting a 15-year old African-American girl at a pool party.

If he really does file, I don’t see any way Fox or the RNC can keep him off the debate stage, which will make the GOP debate must see tv.

58
freetoken  Jul 15, 2015 • 4:56:50am

Caught Tuesday morning here and throughout the net was the OK GOP Facebook posting using the often tweeted idiotic comparison of food stamp recipients to zoo animals.

Heated reaction to OKGOP Facebook post

[…]

The Oklahoma GOP posted an apology this afternoon.

“It read in part….this post was supposed to be an analogy that compared two situations illustrating the cycle of government dependency in America, not humans as animals.

“We believe that ‘free market principles are the best to stimulate our economic development rather than government subsidies or programs’ and I was doing my best to echo that view.

Again, I apologize for any misconceptions that were created.”

The apology was made by the party chair, Randy Brogdon.

[…]

We’ve posted here before (and here, and see Charles keypost here) about Brodgon - he’s quite the theocrat.

So I went over to Facebook to check out the “apology”:

Last night, there was a post on our OKGOP Facebook page, and it was misinterpreted by many. I offer my apologies for those who were offended - that was not my intention.

This post was supposed to be an analogy that compared two situations illustrating the cycle of government dependency in America, not humans as animals.

However I do think that it’s important to have conversations about government welfare programs since our dependency on government is at its highest level ever.

Quoting President Reagan, “We should measure welfare’s success by how many people leave welfare, not by how many are added.”

As read in our Oklahoma Republican Statement of Principles, we believe that “free market principles are the best to stimulate our economic development rather than government subsidies or programs” and I was doing my best to echo that view.

Again, I apologize for any misconceptions that were created.

-Randy

Essentially he’s saying he still believes what his Facebook post said, just that it was the readers who misinterpreted it.

Even though it was a graphic that’s been on twitter a zillion times and pointed out what the graphic really said.

61
Targetpractice  Jul 15, 2015 • 5:01:41am

There’s a small hitch in Dana’s crusade, one I’m sure anybody with a modicum of sense could tell her: In order to charge PP with selling fetal tissue in violation of the law, they’d actually have to catch them in the act or find evidence (financial records, signed agreements, etc) that such sales had been done. A conversation where a woman quotes a price that could just as easily fit the price range for priority shipping costs on living tissue is not that evidence.

freetoken  Jul 15, 2015 • 5:39:31am

The deep reproach of the religious right to a modern understanding of being human has many dimensions, but at the heart (pun intended, see below) of it is that the reality of our being a collection of cells working together in a giant colony is just not magical enough for the religious-thought.

As much as they might rend their garments over body parts, the physical reality remains that cells are just cells.

What makes a human a “person”, given what we know today, is that a person is capable of (even rudimentary) cognition. Body parts can always be replaced. What makes a “person” unique is their unique experiences that then become memory and an identity. ( I furthermore take a more holistic approach, since I think as a giant colony of trillions of cells that the entire person is not just the cerebrum but all of the storage units of sensory data in the body, but that is something for another discussion.)

Anyway, now to the news:

Scientists create ‘mini hearts’ from stem cells

Scientists have developed beating heart tissue from stem cells, an advance that could help screen for drugs likely to generate cardiac birth defects and guide decisions about which drugs are dangerous during pregnancy.

University of California Berkeley researchers, in collaboration with scientists at the Gladstone Institutes, have developed a template for growing beating cardiac tissue from stem cells, creating a system that could serve as a model for early heart development and as a drug-screening tool to make pregnancies safer.

[…]

The scientists mimicked human tissue formation by starting with stem cells genetically reprogrammed from adult skin tissue to form small chambers with beating human heart cells.

[…]

The Nature Communications letter: nature.com

Now it is not a new thing to grow heart tissue from stem cells, but apparently this innovation makes for a better way to create beating hearts for lab study.

Also, it shows that one can take skin cell and make it think it wants to grow into a heart.

I bring this case to light here because the heart, as an organ, is one of the body parts to which religious people in the past have ascribed special properties.

The GAO report said, rather diplomatically, that agents “made inconsistent screening decisions, had varying levels of awareness about … screening criteria, and did not consistently document the rationales for their decisions.”

Even when agents document them, their rationales can be troublesome. Earlier this year, the American Immigration Lawyers Association challenged separate incidents in which Border Patrol agents wrote that children told them they had crossed the border to look for work. In two separate cases, the child who allegedly said this was 3 years old. In another, the child was 11 days old.

Yeah, the alleged “selling” of organs and such is a secondary matter for the people behind the video. They probably don’t care much whether they can “prove” anything illegal or not. It has more to do with what Target Practice mentioned yesterday, that being the PR part of this, get somebody from PP on video saying icky things, get the GOP candidates to denounce PP, etc.

In addition, it provides the OUTRAGE!! necessary to keep the wingnut welfare dollars flowing.

But for the life of me, can’t understand how PP isn’t more careful about these things. They know they’re a target, and they should have a pretty good idea who these people are they’re being interviewed by, not give interviews with people purporting to be from XYZ organization, some outfit they don’t know, since presumably it doesn’t exist.

These are people that don’t know and don’t care. They don’t care about what PP does; they care only to eliminate access to abortion (which is still legal in the US), and since PP is a major provider of abortion services in the US, it is their intention to do everything imaginable to shut them down.

That includes lying and smearing and making bogus claims in the hopes that someone buys into it - especially in Congress, so that funding is slashed.

Of course, any funding cuts to PP means millions of women whose health care is through PP is cut, putting their health at risk.

These anti-abortion folks are so pro-life that they can’t care about the lives of women now alive. The put the existence of zygotes ahead of those girls and women who get contraceptive, reproductive, and general health care through PP.

Businessman and 2016 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump confirmed Wednesday morning that he’ll be meeting later in the day with Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, one of the Republican candidates who has defended Mr. Trump in the wake of his recent comments about Mexico and illegal immigration.

“Ted Cruz called me, and I don’t know why I’m meeting [him], to be honest,” Mr. Trump said via phone on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in response to a question from Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin. “But I do have respect for him. I respect the fact that, along with a couple others, he came out, and he came out very strongly and agreed with what I said on illegal immigration. And he came out very strongly and he came out early. And I respect that.”

“I like him,” he continued. “He called me, he wanted to meet, and we are going to meet. What it’s about, I have absolutely no idea, Mark, but I’m sure you’ll be the first to know it, figure it out.”

And it all came along with the ramp up of social media and new internet media where you can find what you want to hear not necessarily what you need to hear…truth and real facts.

With a group of Trump supporters picketing outside, Bush seemed to relish the chance to call out the mogul’s attacks on Mexican immigrants and to cast himself as an adult alternative.

“On our side, there are people that prey on people’s fears and their angst,” he told about 200 people. “I don’t know about you, but I think it is wrong. I believe we need to unify our country. . . .

“And whether it’s Donald Trump or Barack Obama, their rhetoric of divisiveness is wrong. A Republican will never win by striking fear in people’s hearts,” he added.

And there’s a Chucky Johnson connection too:

Here is even more bullshit.
In 2009, a wee lad “journalist” named Charles Johnson, writing at his site the Claremont Conservative, reported a riveting tale about “David Daleiden’s Group, Live Action” producing a video that showed Planned Parenthood doing naughty crime things, like covering up statutory rape. (Yes, Charles Johnson is that Charles Johnson, aka Charles C. Johnson, aka Chuck Johnson, aka that orange-haired asshole troll who is now permanently banned from Twitter. It’s like all these jerk “citizen journalists” know each other or something, WEIRD.)

That particular video was one of a series of “sting” videos created by Live Action, in which “pro-life” activists like Daleiden go undercover, as pimps and prostitutes, or as minors with their older statutory rapist boyfriends, to try to coax Planned Parenthood employees into breaking the law. Almost all of the time, Live Action failed to get what it wanted, because Planned Parenthood is not actually a criminal enterprise run by Big Abortion’s most evil masterminds. So Live Action simply edited its videos to make it appear as if Planned Parenthood workers were breaking the law. Then it released these edited videos and shouted “GOTCHA!” and demanded further investigations into Planned Parenthood’s supposed wrongdoing. Just as CMP is doing now, with its GOTCHA! video. Huh, what a strange coincidence.

The video is a secret recording of some off-camera undercover “journalists” having a lunch meeting with Dr. Deborah Nucatola, senior director of medical services for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, so it’s hard to understand how it took three years to “investigate” hitting the record button and then uploading it to YouTube.

An article full of win.

And from Charles P. Pierce:

The video is the product of some long-time anti-choice yahoos and acolytes of convicted felon James O’Keefe. Nevertheless, and despite the fact that the video should have the approximate credibility of whatever you found stuck to the sole of your shoe this morning, the usual suspects are in full cry and high-sterics.

“Bobby” Jindal is putting every point of his 28-percent approval rating in Louisiana behind an “investigation” of this horrible situation, and Ted Cruz wants Congress to get into it. More alarmingly, and surely in the interest of just being fair to the grifters who produced this mess, and surely in the interest of objectivity, the mainstream media is, you know, “covering the controversy…”

Once again, I’d like to thank the Democratic members of Congress for chickening out on ACORN and on Shirley Sherrod back in the day so as to make this kind of long con possible. But there is absolutely no reason save cowardice for actual journalists to buy this nonsense simply as a “controversy” that’s “out there.” That’s malpractice of the highest order.

I found this profile of James O’Keefe today. He shares certain traits with Chuck Johnson.
vocativ.com

During his junior prom, he glided across the dance floor like the King of Pop himself. “And now wherever I go,” he says, “they ask me to do the Michael Jackson move.” It was his first taste of fame, and many people that have known O’Keefe agree that he cares very much about being famous. (He occasionally produces pop music with a friend, and moonwalks in music videos.)

In 2002, he enrolled at Rutgers University, where his public persona began to take shape. As a freshman, he was ill-equipped for life on a campus with some 30,000 undergraduates, nearly three times the size of his hometown. He had a hard time making friends, and seemingly desperate to connect with people, he created an online diary. The entries from that period reflect a boy who is becoming politically radicalized, but rather than dive headfirst into left-wing idealism, as one might expect of a young college student, O’Keefe seems to have cannonballed into Rush Limbaugh’s swimming pool.

In January of his freshman year, he wrote a post entitled “Tolerate This.” Written as a slam poem, O’Keefe attacked his classmates for not appreciating the heroic efforts of the sitting president: “Your ignorance thrives when you describe/Bush as a Texas cowboy running astray.”

As an upperclassman, life improved markedly for O’Keefe. He found likeminded friends and formed a small, conservative circle, developing an outspoken political voice. He started a provocative conservative journal called The Centurion with a $500 grant from the Leadership Institute, a group based in Washington, D.C., that trains young conservative activists, journalists and future politicians. (Its alumni include Mitch McConnell and Ralph Reed.) The journal was an anachronism, recalling the neocon spirit of the early ’80s. Its chief targets were political correctness, multiculturalism and affirmative action.

OT, but this came across my news feed:

Long story short is that a gas truck carrying 16,500 litres of gasoline lost its trailer in a tunnel, it began leaking and then exploded.
13 people are known to have made it out of the tunnel, 3 have been hospitalized.
As water levels inside the tunnel (which runs under water for a bit of its 1.9 km length) are rising, emergency personnel have evacuated the tunnel, and nearby houses have also been evacuated.
The consensus is that there is a significant risk the tunnel will collapse.

I’m keeping an eye this one.

The Texas Department of State Health Services seems to have come up with a novel solution to the GOP perceived “anchor baby” problem, don’t issue birth certificates children who were born in Texas to undocumented parents, other wise known as “citizens of the United States of America and the State of Texas” (at least according to the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution, but we all know only the first two count in Texas)

Civil rights lawsuit filed against the Texas Department of State Health Services, alleging constitutional discrimination.

According to the lawsuit, the women who requested birth certificates for their children at the state’s vital statistics offices in Cameron and Hidalgo counties were turned away because of insufficient proof of their identities. State law allows the use of a foreign ID if the mother lacks a Texas driver’s license or a U.S. passport.

But employees at the offices, which are run by the Texas Department of State Health Services, told the women they would no longer accept either the matricula consular, which is a photo ID issued by the Mexican Consulate to Mexican nationals living in the U.S., or a foreign passport without a current U.S. visa. Undocumented Central American women are also being turned away because they only have a passport without a U.S. visa.

Bring in someone from Planned Parenthood to “testify,” only to spend the entirety of the time allotted going on rants about how “evil” abortion is and how “wrong” it is for federal dollars to go to it, along with snide suggestions that anybody who doesn’t want to join in the public flogging is supporting “murdering babies.”

I totally get the most out of Prime membership with free shipping and streaming video. It paid for itself the first year in free shipping alone.

The free Amazon shipping wouldn’t do much for me because almost 2/3 of the stuff I buy is through marketplace sellers. I’ve had really great luck with all but a couple of them, and the cost is often much cheaper even if you include the shipping charges. I don’t stream video and I don’t care about the prime audio features (I’ve got over 2000 songs in my cloud player now due to CD and LP purchases).

If I order anything though Amazon proper, I just wait until I have more than $35 worth of stuff and the shipping is free anyway (although they really put you on the slow boat).

The first time I flew out to the Lex it took me nearly an hour to find my damned rack. There are plaques on every frame of the ship that use a numbering system to let you know where you are, but they aren’t much help if you aren’t altogether sure of where you want to be. That it took two hours to find the fire in that ship’s maze of compartments is not surprising.

I work in an industry where change is the norm, so I’m somewhat accustomed to seeing technologies I worked on disappear as time goes by. Heck, I’m often involved in making the stuff disappear by working on the new technologies to replace the previous stuff.

It’s been interesting. Things I worked on are old hat to me by the time they hit the marketplace as state of the art. Does take the fun out of the new toys that appear.

But as you note, seeing things you worked on show up in museums does make one feel a tad old. But then so do grandkids and the morning aches and pains. ;)

That video of him challenging the cowardly shitstain on Fox to a fistfight over his bigoted flogging of anti-immigrant rhetoric was an instant classic. If someone who is into the Fox gravy train as deep as Geraldo still has the reflex to object to the racist anti-Mexican storyline du jour, that means the GOP has really, really stepped in it.

I hope Steinle keeps hammering away at Trump and the GOP scumbags for this. The more they defend their kneejerk position of “all Mexicans are murdering rapists!!” the more they make their true nature clear to all.
