Video: Views of Pluto From New Horizons’ Approach

The planetoid with a heart

We don’t have images from the New Horizons fly-by of Pluto yet, but here’s a NASA video showing a series of photographs taken by the spacecraft in the final week of its approach, after a 3-billion mile journey to the outer reaches of the Solar System, ending with an amazing view of the heart-shaped area in its lower hemisphere.

I’m more worried that the Reapers are gonna come through the mass relay and wipe us out.

I keep seeing these pictures of Pluto and I instinctively think of the Futurama episode where they actually go there, and it’s a penguin preserve.

I’m sorry, Science.

Seriously, though, it’s been nothing short of miraculous, looking at these photos. In roughly 80 years, we’ve gone from first discovering a dwarf planet 4 billion miles away, to having a probe take amazing hi res photos of it.

The comparison of the Hubble photos from 1993 (fuzzy yellow dot) to the new ones still blows me away.

Watched a NatGeo program about the New Horizons mission yesterday, and what they were able to do with such a small satellite and small launch window was incredible. But it also required significant tradeoffs - to get it there, they had to whittle down the size, and then needed a power source that would last without frying the components or otherwise mar the sensors.

It will run its sensors during the approach, meaning it takes the antenna off the earth, and then spins around to return data via that antenna. It was also using the antenna as a shield against any potential debris in the vicinity.

Pretty incredible stuff - as is the fact that the data transmission is paltry, which is a result of distances involved. Phil Plait relayed that it would take months to get all the data back from New Horizons (as it continues motoring away from earth at 31,000+ mph).

That power source was made right here in Idaho.

Idaho National Laboratory researchers are eager to see results, too. They played a key role in this first-of-its-kind space mission, building and testing a 202-watt power source that steadily kept New Horizons’ instruments and communications systems up and running for nearly a decade.

At the press conference: a sharp riposte from the president to CBS & the National Journal’s reporter Major Garrett’s claim that the president has abandoned Americans jailed in Iran.

Followed by a question (didn’t catch the reporter’s name) about revoking Bill Cosby’s Medal of Freedom. Yeesh.

Celebrating deal on nuclear weapons with Iran while Iran is holding four Americans hostage.

If you start adding the hostages to the deal, you would require additional concessions on the part of the rest of the world - which would weaken the terms that the right wing already thinks is a giveaway.

There was nothing to be gained by adding the hostages to the terms of the nuke deal. There was much to be lost by doing so - so it wasn’t considered.

It was an attempt at gotcha journalism, but shows just how much these nitwits don’t get events they’re reporting on.

Are they hostages being held for ransom (like the U.S. embassy personnel in 1979) or people who violated Iranian law?

Hoft doesn’t seem to realize that not every nuclear reactor can produce nuclear weapons materials. Very specific types can.

Nuclear materials in a civilian nuclear reactor are not sufficient for making nuclear weapons. LEU versus HEU and all that (or plutonium for that matter).

re: #30 The Vicious Babushka

The four are Robert Levinson , Amir Hekmati, Saeed Abedini, and Washington Post Tehran bureau chief Jason Rezaian:

Robert Levinson disappeared from Iran’s Kish Island in 2007. In 2013 it was revealed he had been working at the time with a rogue CIA operation. Though the Iranian government has denied holding Levinson and has promised to help find him, U.S. officials previously told ABC News they suspect some Iranian officials at least know where he is.

Three other Americans - a pastor, a former Marine and a prominent journalist - are currently being held in Iranian prisons on what their families and U.S. officials say are dubious charges.
