I can’t stand all these people who think we should just roll in to Iraq/Iran/Syria/Libya/Saudi Arabia/etc/etc and firebomb ISIS into the stone age. Like it would just be so fucking easy to go in and get rid of them. We couldn’t get it right when we tried with a single country, how disastrous would it be if we tried to do it with an entire REGION.

Also, simple numbers game shows that even if EVERY interested, healthy and able to serve citizen in America were conscripted into the military, in addition to those who already serving, the Islamists would still have at least a 4:1 (if not more) advantage against us.

We have to realize that not every Muslim is a bloodthirsty terrorist. But then we have right wing pundits alleging this daily, causing the Muslims to hate us more. Lather, rinse, repeat.

A large scale assault on the middle east to try and destroy ISIS would end in one of two ways, both horrible:

1) Mass American casualties with failure to achieve objective
2) Odds are at least one country involved would launch a nuke at some point

Not to mention that we have no way of paying for a war against ISIS anyway.

The lack of such crimes is completely irrelevant. The only relevant fact regarding impeachment is the lack of a 2/3 majority in the Senate for a conviction.

If we ever get a Democratic president with a House GOP majority and 2/3 GOP in the Senate, impeachment proceedings will begin immediately and proceed down the line of succession along party-line votes until the Speaker of the House is reached and installed as POTUS.

“This is the greatest appeasement since Chamberlain gave Czechoslovakia to Hitler,” Kirk continued, saying he believed Obama only went through with the deal because he has a poor understanding of history and did not realize appeasement made war more likely. Kirk said he thought the deal meant that Israel would now have to take “military action against Iran.”

Kirk added that he believed the president would make this a “viciously partisan issue,” making it hard to get the votes to stop the deal from going forward.

For a GOPer to talk about vicious partisanship by Obama really takes hypocrisy to entirely new dimensions.

Kirk has since clarified his statement, indicating that there is no record of his aircraft being fired upon.[26] ‘I simply misremembered [sic] it wrong’, he told the Chicago Sun-Times, referring to his military record.[27]”

Here’s what confuses me about purity movement. They agree on the following:

- God designed humans to be sexual beings and gave us sex drives
- As part of that, he also designed us to have a biological yearning for sex from adolescence on
- But He also forbids sex outside of marriage
- And He forbids masturbation*

* This last point is theologically debated. The Bible doesn’t say too much about masturbation and Jesus himself never addresses it. He does mention “sexual immorality” but there’s an ongoing and sure to be virtually endless debate about what that term actually means.

But I can’t for the life of me reconcile why God would design us as sexual beings but then apparently leave unmarried people with no avenue whatsoever for sexual release. My personal belief is that masturbation is NOT sexually amoral, provided it is NOT being used as a substitute for a normal sex like while married.

Also factor in that in Biblical times, people got married a lot younger. There is of course much less of an issue waiting until marriage for sex if you are getting married at 14/15/16.

SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Jul 15, 2015 • 12:34:32pm

Just a few quickies about appeasement. To give some context to the decisions of those days, remember that France and Great Britain suffered a combined total of 9+ million casualties in WW1. If you were going to ask the flower of European youth to go back to war with weapons even more advanced than those that they had just used a generation before, it had to be for something more important than the Sudetenland. French labor unions threatened strikes in case of war, and there was genuine fear that they could have held a war and nobody showed up.

re: #96 Mattand

Hey, Charles:

OT: How does that Amazon click thingy work for you? Do I just click on a Amazon ad on the page? I’ve already got some stuff in my basket.

Well, I think you need to click through from one of our links before adding things to your basket — there’s a button in the left column that says “Shop at Amazon as an LGF Associate”, that contains our code. It’s also on the front page in the right sidebar.

I like how excited LGF is about Pluto pictures.

It’s cheering me up after reading political derp in one of my cross stitch forums. I should know better.

Just don’t ask them if Pluto is a planet or a dwarf planet.

Okay. Found the upper left button after I posted. I can clear the basket and put the stuff in Save for Later.

- And He forbids masturbation*

* This last point is theologically debated. The Bible doesn’t say too much about masturbation and Jesus himself never addresses it. He does mention “sexual immorality” but there’s an ongoing and sure to be virtually endless debate about what that term actually means.

Seed spilling is clearly forbidden. And as Christine O’Donnel pointed out, it is driven by lust, which is sinful.

Although in my case, it is not so much driven by lust as by force of habit…

They often point to story of Onan for that, but Onan was punished because his seed spilling was in defiance of God, not because the act itself was sinful…or so goes the general logic.

Who, LGF or the cross stitch ladies?

I’m fairly certain some of these women wouldn’t know either term if it bit them on the ass.

re: #108 Eclectic Cyborg

You’re always gonna have a problem picking up a body in one piece asking for logical consistency out of a faith-based, puritanical movement.

I meant the cross-stitch ladies. I was surprised by the anger of people a few years ago when Pluto got demoted. Lots of “What do those trained astronomers know about planets anyway?” kind of stuff.

Wasn’t Onan’s sin that he pulled out rather than getting his sister-in-law pregnant after his brother had died? I seem to remember that.

Just start worshipping the Greek pantheon. They had enough sex, dysfunction, gluttony, and drama for everyone.

That was my understanding.

But in a larger sense, how can one believe in a God that created the hand, and the genitalia, put them within easy reach of each other, made the interaction of one with the other very pleasurable, and then made it grounds for damnation?

Omar Khayyam had a period where he wrestled with that conundrum (paradox?). He seemed to finally resolve it, but he never said how exactly.

When, bending low, God moulded me from clay,
Incontrovertibly my life was ordered:
Without His order I abstain from crime.
Why should I burn, then, on His Judgement Day?
Rubaiyat, Quatrain LXXXII

That sin is irresistible, He knows;
Yet He commands us to abstain from sin.
Thus irresistibility confounds us
With prohibition:—‘Lean, but never fall!’
Rubaiyat, Quatrain LXXXIII

Ordaining every cause for life or death,
Guarding this tattered robe we call the Sky,
Say, am I sinful? Are you not my Master?
Who sins when You alone created me?
Rubaiyat, Quatrain LXXXVIII

The point is that Christianity and early Christian doctrine was shaped by a bunch of people who were wracked by self-loathing and sexual insecurities. That tradition continues in Biblical exegesis to this day.
