The Full Planned Parenthood “Sting” Video Reveals Right Wing Deception Tactics

Right wing hatchet men deliberately left out important exculpatory information

YouTube

I’m posting the full version of the Planned Parenthood hit job produced by David Daleiden and his “Center for Medical Progress” (an Orwellian name if there ever was one), along with a link to the complete transcript, because it leaves absolutely no doubt that the edited version most people are seeing is deliberately deceptive. The edited video leaves out some very important information — and even the unedited version carries a completely false title: “Planned Parenthood Uses Partial-Birth Abortions to Sell Baby Parts.”

No, they do not.

For example, here’s a section from the transcript in which the undercover right wing operative sleazily tries to get Planned Parenthood medical director Dr. Deborah Nucatola to discuss selling organs and body parts for profit — and she makes it very, very clear that this is not something Planned Parenthood ever does. This was left out of the edited video, obviously deliberately, because it destroys the impression they’re working so hard to convey, that Planned Parenthood is profiting from the sale of fetal tissue.

Buyer: If, we can offer to an affiliate that we’re going to take care of everything, the consenting, the collection, we don’t even need an extra room, we just need three feet of space in the path lab, in the back with a dish so we can do that.

PP: Uh huh. Which we already have set up, you just have to-

Buyer: Right. Is that- are there affiliates, who would just donate the tissue for
free?

PP: Probably. I mean really, the guidance is, this is not something you should be making an exorbitant amount of money on.

Buyer: Is that the PPFA guidance or?

PP: Yes. Our goal, like I said, is to give patients the option without impacting our bottom line. The messaging is this should not be seen as a new revenue stream, because that’s not what it is.

Buyer: That seems like it would be, and correct me if I’m wrong. Seems like it would be such an easy thing to not show a profit. No matter how much we compensate, it—

PP: Yeah. Well, but at the end of the day, you still need to have the paperwork to back it up because, we are under a microscope.

Buyer: But your cost, your loss in some areas must be so much that that can be shown to, I don’t know-

PP: I understand. If you were to look at it in the big picture, yes. But nobody looks at it in the big picture, they look with the little blinders on.

Buyer: Ok. I’m just trying to brainstorm. Because, I think offering some people, not only, just offsetting their cost in other areas, seeing the potential for that, besides the potential, for the patient, I’m still going down that road, even though I know, I understand what you’re saying. This cannot be seen as, “We’re doing this for profit.”

PP: No. Nothing, no affiliate should be doing anything that’s not like, reasonable and customary. This is not- nobody should be “selling” tissue. That’s just not the goal here.

Notice how the undercover operatives label themselves as “Buyer” — even though they’re not “buying” anything and Dr. Nucatola made that very clear to them. Again, Planned Parenthood and other clinics do not profit from the sale of fetal tissues; these specimens are donated by the women who undergo procedures, like any other tissue might be donated from any other medical procedure. Any fees involved are only intended to cover costs of handling, shipping, storage, etc. Nobody profits from these donations.

Another section was left out of the edited video because it destroys the image of Dr. Nucatola as a soulless monster, and makes it clear she’s a compassionate, caring physician who was motivated to help women in a time of great need and distress. Dr. Nucatola talks about a patient she saw when she was an OB/GYN resident, who was transferred to her after suffering complications:

I will tell you the date, I was on-call, it was my last day, I was on call, when you’re a resident in obstetrics and gynecology you spend a dedicated amount of time in obstetrics and a dedicated amount of time in gynecology. In your senior year, it’s four months of each. So, February 28th 1998 was my last day of GYN ever as a resident and then I would be done. July I would graduate and then I would be an OB/GYN. And on that day, there was patient that was transferred to me, from an outside clinic, who had had a D&E, dilation and evacuation, late second trimester abortion, she was bleeding. That patient was transferred to me and she got to the hospital and I met her in the emergency room and I saw her and she was as white as this napkin, and I still remember her name, I remember everything about her, and she looked up at me, and she said, “Don’t let me die.” And she actually bled to death. We did a hysterectomy in about twelve minutes and she died. It was very distressing and very upsetting. I probably had a very different reaction than most people would, which was well I do D&Es all the time, and I don’t ever have complications. And I think I’m pretty good at them, I need to keep making sure that there are lots of people doing these D&Es safely so there’s not another patient like this.

There you have it — the reason why we can’t let these dishonest right wing hatchet men succeed in destroying Planned Parenthood. If their agenda succeeds, there will be many more women who die from complications after illegal abortions. Making abortion illegal won’t stop abortions, it will just drive them underground and bring back the bad old days.

But of course, that’s exactly what these right wing goons are after — bringing back the bad old days.

The common one I’m hearing now is “How dare she sound so callous and unfeeling about this?! Abortion is wrong and she’s talking about it without any caring!”

Of course, when you dig deeper, what it really comes down to is a doctor laying out the realities of what it takes to extract viable tissue for donation being too “icky” for the anti-choice crowd. They don’t seem to understand that doctors do not beat around the bush and talk to each other in the kid-friendly terms that they use when talking to patients.

Without a doubt. In fact, I’ll go farther and say the hearings will be 90% anti-choice “experts” and “witnesses.” Think the ACA birth control mandate business, where the “experts” were a panel of white men, most of them members of the clergy.

Nobody should allow themself to indulge in the idea that these hearings will be anything but a kangaroo court bent on painting PP in the very worst light so that even its supporters will feel hard-pressed to vote against stripping it of federal funding.

Worth mentioning again here. Congress knew about the video going back several weeks and did nothing.

They didn’t think there was anything criminal or else they would have launched investigations a few weeks back (before this news would get crowded out by Iran). Rather, they didn’t act.

Rep. Tim Murphy, a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus and chairman of the Energy and Commerce subcommittee looking into the video, said at a Wednesday news conference he’d seen the clip weeks before. Asked afterward why he and others waited until this week to take action, Murphy struggled for an answer before abruptly ending the interview with CQ Roll Call, saying he should not be quoted and remarking, “This interview didn’t happen.”

Here’s an excerpt from CQ Roll Call’s hallway chat with Murphy:

CQ Roll Call: “So, what I wondered was, what’s happened in those few weeks? Why is it coming out now and not earlier?”

Murphy: “Um, I don’t know why. All I know is I saw it and he said he was going to post it eventually, so that’s all I know.”

Murphy spokeswoman Gretchen Andersen told CQ Roll Call on Thursday the congressman had a responsibility to do “due diligence” before starting an investigation.

Strange. That.

A bogus video, and I’m calling it bogus because it was hacked/edited beyond recognition so as to attempt to completely change the meaning of the conversation and discussion to put PP in the worst possible light, that doesn’t show what the proponents claim it shows.

There’s no criminality, no discussion of crimes, and no sales of fetal tissue. None of it.

And yet the GOP gets a gift to launch another taxpayer-funded witch hunt to waste taxpayer dollars on going after PP for something it isn’t even doing.

This is what the GOP is up to, and the anti-choice activists want. Force PP to spend time and money on these bogus claims, hope that the GOP can cut funding, and rinse/repeat.

The increased amount and visibility of bigotry against black people after Obama was elected did not surprise me. The resurgence of bigotry against women should not surprise me, and it’s increase if and when Hillary is elected shouldn’t either. But bigots never know when to stop, and the increase in bigotry against Hispanics and Jews and Muslims and anybody else who can be ‘othered’ by Y’all Qaeda follows all too naturally and frighteningly.

Let’s be generous - more generous than the data suggest - and accept for the sake of argument that they really do oppose abortion because they see it as equivalent to murder.

What they have done is to take an absolutist position that actually accomplishes the OPPOSITE of their goal. They have spent, probably, billions of dollars and 42 years to make all abortion in the US illegal, and after all that time and all that effort, they have only made incremental progress.

Think how many more abortions they could have prevented if they had chosen instead to target the reason women seek abortions - because they got pregnant when they didn’t want to. If they had taken a pragmatic, nonjudgemental approach, they could have prevented MILLIONS of abortions by supporting free access to contraception, full and effective sex education for all women of childbearing age - including preteens.

They have allowed the perfect to be the enemy of the good. By choosing instead to focus solely on making abortion illegal, they have allowed what they consider to be the murder of millions of the unborn.

A former New Mexico State University student has been sentenced to five years of probation for hindering an investigation into an online threat to shoot up the school last year.

Prosecutors say 20-year-old Zachary Milton Hess of Las Cruces also was ordered Wednesday to pay nearly $78,000 in restitution to the university.

Well, I finally caught up. My internet quit Tuesday afternoon—I thought it had been disconnected because quite frankly, I’m late on paying the bill. (It would have to wait till next Wednesday anyway.) My diagnostics said something about “WiFi has no I.P. address” and I’m going: “Whuh?”

So finally late last night I thought to connect my laptop with an ethernet cable and it works fine. And the WiFi works now that I’m signed in over the ethernet. Weird phenomenon.

The GOP has spent decades creating a base of easily manipulated voters who care about their resentments more than anything else. Furthermore, there has also been decades of right wing propaganda to the effect that the rich are better than everyone else. Finally, wealth is power, and RWNJs love to submit to authority in the hopes that some will rub off on them.

All of this creates absolutely perfect conditions for a rich grifter like Trump to come in and grab the entire GOP base for his own ends (like the pied piper).

While Republican outrage exploded about the video this week, Roll Call reported that some Republican lawmakers had seen the video before it was publicly released — some as long a month ago.

Rep. Trent Franks, a member of the Pro-Life caucus, said he had seen the video a month ago.

“The hope was to have as much information as possible so that the authorities could be notified effectively before the media,” Franks said in response to a question about why he didn’t immediately take steps to address the video.

And that statement sounds derpier each time I hear it.

It’s so stupid. I’ve been in the medical profession almost 20 years. Yeah, we can seem rather casual when discussing subjects others might find “disturbing”, often while eating. That’s because it’s our day-to-day job. You get used to it. That’s just human nature.

While all this is true. Speaking as a Mother and as someone who in my younger days have used the services of PP, gratefully so; I have to say, the language in that video made me cringe.

I say this not to pile on, but as a reality check. There are a lot of women like me who are staunchly pro choice, who may have some qualms about the procedure itself. Sensitivity is key with the public. I fear that much damage has been done.

I am, and will remain a supporter of PP, I think they save lives. But this was an unforced error. Prolonging the news-cycle with this apology will not help.

FSM, these whack-jobs don’t quit. One of them claims to be a Libertarian, but is hardcore anti-abortion because “Right to Life” is the foundation of all other rights. I guess that excludes the right to control over your own body for women of childbearing age.

Probably a Ron/Rand Paul “Libertarian” who’s really a stupid religious conservative.

So, Dim Jim and others complain that the President offered up Eid greetings (because, well, it’s Eid) while the circumstance in Chatanooga are still uncertain.

Then we learn the name, and it’s a jump to conclusions that not only is the shooter Muslim, but it must be terrorism and that all Muslims are responsible. See Malkin, Geller et al., for that line of thought.

The President offers his sympathies, and Malkin complains.

Their complaints aren’t rational, but rather based solely on the fact that Obama is, well, Obama.

I can understand the caution to PP not to make excuses.

But damn it, that is a very typical liberal thing to do. Why? Because many times liberals do not want to upset anyone…to a fault. Liberals try to reason things out, often times in the face of a bully that will not want to listen to the facts.

It is almost a natural reaction. And why? Because of conservatives, especially of the nut job type.

Reasoning is a trait of being reasonable. That is what they are trying to do, be reasonable.

And as far as Planned Parenthood. Someone else mentioned that this is all about shaming poor women. That is why trying to tell a RWNJ that PP does other things for women goes nowhere. The moneyed conservatives for sure see it that way. And they aren’t going to worry about shutting down PP clinics, they will get their abortions at the well-paid doctors they already go to.

Yeah…I remember all those D&C procedures that were performed that weren’t. But hey, who was watching what the well-off were up to. No need to be suspicious of the good people. The good people were too busy making sure the poors are being good little poors.

Targetpractice  Jul 16, 2015 • 3:03:45pm

I’ve not seen an instance where a liberal apologized that it has done anything but further tightened the noose. It helps to remember that, even years after the “investigation” into the IRS business foundered, the believers in that “scandal” continue to insist that a crime must have occurred because Mrs. Lerner apologized. They can’t actually prove a crime occurred, but we’re supposed to accept that it did because otherwise she wouldn’t have apologized.

Just got off the phone with my oldest stepson who has multiple serious health issues, including liver cancer, a result of a Hepatitis C infection from a blood transfusion during a surgery when he was 5 years old to correct a congenital heart defect that was due to a birth defect as a result of him being an FAS child. He needs a liver transplant and a heart transplant, but neither are going to happen now.
He also had a TBI in August and is still recovering from that.
When I talked with him last month, he was told he had 6 weeks to a year to live. His words were so slurred, it was hard to understand what he was saying.
Today, his words were so clear (but at one point he forgot he was talking to me and started to tell me a story about chickens and dogs and mentioned me by name as someone involved in the story as if he was telling it to someone else).
He’ll be 53 at the end of the month and is hoping to live as long as his Dad (who died at age 55).
He’s worked hard all of his life and it comes down to this.
I wish I lived closer (he lives in Kankakee, IL, over 300 miles away and I drive an ancient vehicle that I’m always relieved gets me to town once a week without incident).

Sometimes life really sucks a lot.

Figure this may be a good time to provide a glimpse of Mrs Cranky’s current garden show. Even on a dreary day like today, it does tend to lift spirits a bit. So a couple of pics:

Last image shows the dog access to the yard. 85 yo house has a front and side door but no door directly into the back yard. So I build a set of stairs inside to a window, removed the window and replaced it with a panel w/dog door, and then built an enclosed stairway along and then through the fence. So the dogs have full access to the back yard at any time, which they love.

I’ve been gone awhile, a long time actually. Glad to be back. Lots has happened. Almost lost my marriage, things are on a better path, but still not great. Son is in a work program, seems to be doing well so far. He’s also learning to drive, gulp. Husband lost his job a couple weeks ago, and is now doing subcontractor work with a friend of his (so no more insurance after the end of the month, gulp, again). I am trying to start my own little online business, so far so, meh.

I’ve been here reading off and on when I had a moment or two, looks like the derp proceeds apace without end. Thank gods you all are here doing this, it’s helped me sort of be an anti-derp to some of my neighbors and wingnut friends. I’ve missed you all. This PP thing hits home personally for me. When my daughter was little, PP doctors actually took care of her when she was sick and there was no doctor around who would see her. We lived in a part of Appalachia at the time in a town with no pediatrician. She was 3 and had a double ear infection and strep throat. I’ll never forget that. They didn’t have to do it, they just did it. Gave her antibiotics, followed up with us, the whole deal. These right wing loons are destroying the country from the inside out, something has to give here.

No. This part of the culture war cannot be evaded. RWNJs will make absolutely sure of that.

Anybody who believes this is gonna go away with an apology or perhaps even throwing Dr. Nucatola to the wolves is engaged in wishful thinking. They see this as their best opportunity to land a major (if not fatal) blow to PP and they’re not going to let it slip away. Just as with ACORN and the O’Keefe video, they have a powerful weapon because it causes even PP’s supporters to respond with disgust at the way she talked about the process involved.

Also, no violation of the law:

A US Attorney in Kansas has decided that a man who sold fetal body parts from an Overland Park, Kan., abortion clinic did not violate any federal laws.

Miles Jones, the owner of Opening Lines, a West Frankfort, Ill., company involved in the sale of fetal body parts to researchers, had been placed under investigation by the FBI following media accounts that he had been selling the body parts for profit, which is against federal law.

Acting US Attorney Jim Flory decided “after a thorough review of the issues involved,” that there were no violations of federal statutes, indicating that the investigation had drawn to a close.

I was previously unaware of this:

GodBlock is a web filter that blocks religious content. It is targeted at parents and schools who wish to protect their kids from the often violent, sexual, and psychologically harmful material in many holy texts, and from being indoctrinated into any religion before they are of the age to make such decisions. When installed properly, GodBlock will test each page that your child visits before it is loaded, looking for passages from holy texts, names of religious figures, and other signs of religious propaganda. If none are found, then your child is allowed to browse freely.

Unfortunately, I tend to agree with this view. A PP doctor on video talking like a doctor with respect to abortion is going to cause a PR and media freakout. A perfect storm of malice by RWNJs and ignorance by large parts of media and society.

Not true; the regulations where changed by H W Bush, not Clinton. And anyone who think that soldiers can carry around loaded weapons on military bases (other than security and police personnel) has never spent any time on bases. The military has known for a long time that the RWNJ fantasy of everyone always being armed is NOT a good idea.

re: #164 Amory Blaine

An apology is unproductive and naïve. They will use it to advance sanctions. They should have circled the wagons and went on the offensive. How can they not know this?

Because, unfortunately, for a lot of people on the progressive side of things the very idea of conflict is unthinkable. They can’t fight back because to them doing so would make them bad people.

So they try to negotiate, compromise, give up a little in hopes the other side will be satisfied, appease.

Unfortunately, they are dealing with people who want only total and absolute victory. They want their opponents dead, their property destroyed and the land where they existed salted so there is no hope of that evil raising its head ever again.

I understand hating conflict and what a slippery slope it represents, but sometimes you have to fight.

John Cole has written several times about firearm discipline on military bases, from the POV of an actual soldier, and why it is done that way, and why it would be a BIG mistake to let soldiers carry weapons outside of those rules.

A bunch of young, testosterone-laden men, all in the same place, with a lot of guns. What could possibly go wrong?

My opinion—no. That’s admitting defeat when they have done nothing wrong. As much noise as the wingers and the anti-choice freaks make, PP has always stood up to them and walked through the storm. There are a whole lot of people who totally support Planned Parenthood and recognize all the good they do. We just need to fight back harder against the assholes.

first, was this recorded in a state that doesn’t require two-party consent to recordings? second, there has GOT to be an easy civil suit for defamation here. the PP rep is obviously suffering harm from a malicious editing of a conversation. Please tell me there’s a massive lawsuit coming, at the very least.
