In the 2016 Election, Nearly All GOP Candidates Are Creationists

Anti-science and proud of it
WTF • Views: 78,518

As the New Horizons spacecraft races past Pluto into the outer reaches of the Solar System, a towering triumph for science and technology, we’ve got a slate of Republican candidates here on Earth that’s about as anti-science as it’s possible to be.

Almost all of the GOP candidates for president in the 2016 election deny the scientific theory of evolution, and a majority of them are actually young Earth creationists who believe, despite all the mountains of scientific evidence, that the Earth is no more than 6,000 years old. Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, and Bobby Jindal are all making a point of visiting a politically connected Iowa church that teaches this brand of ignorant, atavistic creationism: Iowa Church Touting Creationism a Big Draw for Some White House Hopefuls.

A little Iowa church that preaches the theory that the Bible’s book of Genesis could be a scientifically accurate account of the beginning of the world has become a magnet for religious conservative presidential candidates.

Republicans Ben Carson and Mike Huckabee have already visited the First Assembly of God Church in Indianola. Bobby Jindal is booked to be at the church Saturday.

In 2014, the church hosted a five-day conference that discussed how Noah’s Biblical flood could explain the supposed misconception that the earth is older than 6,000 years.

The Rev. Jordan Cleigh, who works for the church, told the Des Moines Register at the time: “For the past 50 to 60 years public schools have been teaching evolution even though evolution doesn’t have all of the answers either. (Creationism) lets people believe in the Bible and Jesus.”

And don’t even get me started on the Republican denial of climate change.

“For the past 50 to 60 years public schools have been teaching evolution even though evolution doesn’t have all of the answers either. (Creationism) lets people believe in the Bible and Jesus.”

Of course, creationists don’t have any answers other than “God did it”.

“For the past 50 to 60 years public schools have been teaching evolution even though evolution doesn’t have all of the answers either.

Evolution is a scientific theory about the origins of the observed diversity of life. It’s got most of the answers about that. It doesn’t pretend to have all the answers about anything else.

(Creationism) lets people believe in the Bible and Jesus.”

That’s funny. I know A LOT of Christians who believe FERVENTLY in the Bible and Jesus, and DON’T believe in Creationism. They know that the Bible doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, either.

Remember, you’re dealing with the authoritarian mindset. They Argument From Authority as a valid argument, not a fallacy, so they believe if they can discredit an authority, they’ve refuted the argument. Hence, ‘Al Gore Is Fat!’

I think that such pandering is inevitable, since every segment of the GOP base will need to have its resentments catered to if Trump is to succeed.

However, I also think it more likely that Trump’s pandering to religious RWNJs will be via opposition to marriage equality instead of creationism.

Creationism is bizarre nonsense to anyone not infected with religious zealotry, and Trump shows no signs of that.

Trump loves playing the brash New Yorker, and he’s taken it to such a cartoonish level that the more people tell him not to do something, he’s going to do it because screw you, I’m Donald Trump.

The question I have is this - how much more of Trump is the GOP willing to take? Reince (sp?) told him to calm down and Trump ignored him.

If Trump continues to look viable, will they just stop telling him not to be an asshole or pull a power play to prove the RNC has more juice than the Asshole Real Estate Guy? Either one is probable with these craven SOBs..

1) Scientists at the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider just discovered two particles made up of not three, not four, but five quarks—the first observed pentaquarks. Scientists have been searching for this class of particles for about 50 years.

“The pentaquark is not just any new particle,” says LHCb spokesperson Guy Wilkinson of University of Oxford. “Studying its properties may allow us to understand better how ordinary matter, the protons and neutrons from which we’re all made, is constituted.”

2) Egomaniacal bigot billionaire is the leading GOP presidential candidate.

re: #70 LadyBehir

Washington Post did a fact check on that, and awarded “Three Pinocchios”

…The Pinocchio Test

The GAO’s report found that the insurers it studied were not following billing requirements. But experts say that does not necessarily mean the providers were illegally using federal subsidies for abortions. Even if they were, Foxx’s statement that Obamacare authorized “massive” subsidies is an exaggeration. Based on the estimates above, abortion charges would range from 0.2 percent to 0.65 percent of an enrollee’s monthly bill.

The claim that “hard-earned taxpayer dollars” are paying for abortions “on demand” implies that taxpayers foot the abortion bill for any woman who requests one. But in reality, some providers still imposed their own restrictions on which abortions to cover, and all 18 issuers had payment requirements, such as out-of-pocket costs and co-pays.

Lawmakers like Foxx who oppose abortion rights discredit the billing and funding separation requirement for elective abortion services. Billing doesn’t matter, they say, because federal tax dollars used for subsidies pay for everything in a health plan. This is an opinion, and something that can’t be fact-checked. But to say that massive federal subsidies are paying for abortions on demand is not an accurate portrayal of this complex issue, and the facts in the GAO report do not support this argument.

In not unrelated news, TLC finally makes a decision:

AP Exclusive: TLC cancels ‘19 Kids and Counting’

After weeks in limbo stemming from revelations of sexual misconduct by one of its stars, the TLC reality show “19 Kids and Counting” is officially dead.

TLC is not moving forward with an 11th season of “19 Kids” featuring the Duggars, whose show “will no longer appear on the air,” the network told The Associated Press on Thursday.

“We spent the past month and a half in thoughtful consideration about what is the best way forward here,” said Marjorie Kaplan, group president of TLC, Animal Planet and Velocity networks

In a move to redirect the attention and public outcry, TLC also announced it has teamed with two prominent child-protection organizations for an ongoing campaign to raise awareness about child sexual abuse.

Did it really have to take 6 weeks?

re: #65 EPR-radar

I don’t think it certain that Trump will lose the GOP nomination. The desire of the GOP base to hear their resentments echoed verbatim by a GOP candidate is very strong these days. If Trump continues to replace the dog whistles with foghorns, he should do well.

Trump may be riding high now, but his malignant narcissism won’t be able to handle the criticism he’ll get during the debates. I think his response to the criticisms will throw the party in even worse turmoil than it is today and there will be revolt to get rid of him. That rejection will likely result in a third party run by Trump.

At least that’s what I’m hoping for as a birthday present. ;)

Urgent help here, please. I have an old friend who claims there’s a lot of partial birth abortions. “Ummm 37 years in the medical field typing medical records, I can assure you that women use the basic “abortion” no matter what stage as birth control. Don’t tell me because I have seen it first hand.” And that Obamacare means that federal funds pay for abortions, Hyde amendment or not. Any easy links to quickly debunk?

Only 1% of abortions take place after 20 weeks

But when they become necessary at that point, time is of the essence and can’t be wasted waiting around for court ordered exceptions to abortion bans. Women have died.

re: #72 Higgs Boson’s Mate

It struck me that Trump is in it to win it this time. He easily blew through the financial disclosure that so many figured would take him out of the race. He’s lucked into being just what the GOP base wants these days and he has enough dough to tell the RNC to fuck itself for the moment. The campaign money will be there if he lasts long enough.

This could be fun.

With Trump on stage, the Fox News Debate will be must see TV. I hope Charles can stream it here, because I want to watch it with all of you!

You’re welcome, but no thanks are required. This is one of my few life-long interests - promoting science and resisting the creationists. Started as a teenager, and now decades later still at it.

The radical changes post-Enlightenment, post-Industrial Revolution, is too much for some people, who cling to older, simpler views of humanity and life.

The new world is one of wonder but is also scary, because there is no magical escape from death and eventual non-existence.

The universal existential problem (of the awareness of our future non-existence) is the single most significant side effect of evolving a larger brain capable of abstract thought.

re: #97 The Vicious Babushka

I’m always astounded that right wingers think there are large numbers of women who carry a pregnancy almost all the way to birth, then decide on a whim to have an abortion.

Bottom line: it almost never happens, and when it does there are almost always serious medical problems that make it necessary.

I won’t say it’s never done frivolously, because we’re dealing with human beings and we humans do tend to get crazy sometimes.

But the obsessive right wing focus on “partial birth abortions” is simply deranged. Like their whole agenda.

For the Mac folks on here, do any of you know a quick fix if the touchpad starts acting schizo and refuses to work? I’ve got a MacBook Pro for work and the touchpad is unreliable at best, outright frustrating at worst. Something as simple as highlighting text can be a challenge sometimes, and screenshots are a pain in the ass, which sucks since a big part of my job includes social media stat reports that require screenshots.

Yes I’ve turned the computer on and off. Yes I’ve restarted. I have no idea how to fix this and I’m halfway to chucking this thing out the damn window and saying that Linux gremlins broke into my house and stole it so I can get a new laptop.

Any ideas?

I just wish we had more leaders who weren’t so milquetoast in defending modernity against the medievalists.

A more direct approach is needed, I think. So often public figures don’t want to take on religious leaders, which I think is fine if said religious leaders stay within their little bubble. But when those religious leaders venture out into politics then I think not only is it a good idea but it is necessary to call out the backwards-ness of those who still refuse to live in the 21st century.

What I think the root of problem with fundies and RWNJs thinking every abortion is late term can be traced all the way back to when all the fundies started to protest outside clinincs. What were their images they had on all those posters? What did the media always show?

Once that worked to embed an image of what abortion was to the masses then churches got into it. Then they made cute little baby doll fetuses so they could pass them around in churches and at Sunday school and at assemblies in their Christian fundie schools or at home.

So in a large majority of peoples heads the worst and most unbelievably dramatic thing they see is a cute late term baby that has the look of a tiny 2 month old that someone has strung from a sign and all bloody.

In a way the fundies win the PR war. They’ve been at it a long time.

And sorry for even having to discuss this in an strong image way.

This is the problem I had with my old 13” MBP. Enable “tap to click” and it should fix it. Afterwards just tap your finger lightly on the trackpad to click. There’s a sensor on the bottom that loosens up and I’m not sure it’s even possible to adjust it anymore.

Here’s a video for how to do it yourself but it was made in 2010 for the old models. The new ones like my 15” Retina are even less user serviceable.

If, as freetoken stated, there was an indie company involved, TLC would have just surrendered everything back to the indie producer and told them: “You’re on your’re own”-especially if TLC had written into the contract something equivalent to a “morals clause.” The indie producer who provided the show would have been screwed six ways from Sunday (how ironically appropriate in this case) and then put TLC in the the crosshairs with having to deal with the whole “Honey Boo-Boo” fracas.

Compared with Earth sunlight at noon, it’s pretty dim, but 1/000 of that is still ~1.3 W/m2. Now an old-fashioned 100 Watt light bulb puts out ~1 W of visible light—but in a small bedroom with an area (Walls/ceiling/floor) of maybe 50 m2, that would be <1/60 of that, and you’d call it pretty well-lit.

The sun’s below the horizon in this shot, but the light conditions are about the same as they would be on Pluto’s surface. The sun would be the brightest star in the sky, and you’d be able to see other stars because Pluto has next to no atmosphere.

Has anyone brought up this Donald Trump campaign EPIC FAIL yet?

Trump and Hitler’s Recreated Bodyguard

Wherever Trump’s unique political caravan is headed, it’s safe to say that his reputation as a social media genius won’t recover from yesterday. It was discovered — ok, I discovered and told everybody online — that a new campaign ad (left), tweeted out by Trump’s account — a frankly tacky montage of the American flag, Trump’s visage, the White House, a stack of Benjamins (of course), and some armed troops — had a problem. A big problem.

Image: cj5ztjdwsaavrhf.jpg

The troops depicted at the bottom, you see, weren’t American. No GI Joes here. Who exactly was Trump recommending help him #MakeAmericaGreatAgain? Oddly, Germans. Worse, they were World War II Germans — you know, when the guy with that trim mustache was destroying Europe and genociding millions.

I don’t know how many people out of a million would notice that something was “off” with Trump’s new ad, but one person did. An observant follower tweeted an important question at me about who these camouflaged guys were.

Upon close examination (right), I immediately realized that these were not just Wehrmacht (meaning regular German military) troops, but soldiers from the Waffen-SS, Hitler’s elite political army that was responsible for war crimes on every front where it fought. The Waffen-SS, made up of fanatical fighters who battled for Hitlerism without restraint, was judged a criminal organization by the Nuremberg Tribunal (with exemptions only for those conscripted into its ranks in the war’s last two years such as Günter Grass, the heralded left-wing novelist who — whoops — for decades lied about his Waffen-SS service).

So these really aren’t the guys you want stumping for you if you want to be the president of the United States.

Well, Trump is a match for Hitler in the ego department.

The sun’s below the horizon in this shot, but the light conditions are about the same as they would be on Pluto’s surface. The sun would be the brightest star in the sky, and you’d be able to see other stars because Pluto has next to no atmosphere.

And, if you were on the side facing Charon, it would be in the same place all day long.

Didn’t know they had lighted signs on Pluto! Thanks for the live shot from the minor planet, and those cameras on New Horizon are awesome!

I think your reply was too harsh. To call the attack “Islamic Terror” is poor terminology, and not what I’d say, but its not conclusive evidence of an anti-Muslim bias. He should change his term to ‘Islamist’ for greater accuracy, but saying we’re still at war seems clear.

Lower gravity means slower descent and falling rates, so hitting 60 mph on a run would take quite a bit longer. On the other hand, there’d be no air resistance.

Plus, the “snow” is probably not water ice, but frozen gases like nitrogen and methane, so waxing your skis would be tricky.

But you’d have 10 years on the way out to think about this stuff, and another 10 on the way home. Plenty of time to embellish your ski stories. ;-)

I guess the old Jesuits who taught me about Evolution, and about the Bible, must have been nuts. They said the science was sound, and no-one should argue that the story of Genesis is literally true. After all, it is internally inconsistent even with itself. The head of the biology department, a Jesuit, said that the crucial thing was to realize that the wonder of evolution is not to deny that “God created the world,” but that he did it through evolution. From the Biblical story, you see that God loved humans.

He didn’t say it in so many words, but he thought that seeing the Bible as the authority on all things was actually just naive. Why would one expect that to be true?

Then he proceeded to tell us about Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who was a theologian and an anthropologist who visited the digs in “Peking”, as it was called, and was there at the discovery of what was known as the “Peking Man.” He wrote a book, “From Alpha to Omega,” from beginning to end, that show his belief that that evolution was indeed the force that was creating the world at all times, and the seeming goal of human life is the arrival at a very high state of consciousness. That’s MY old-time religion.

And actually, Holmes had a Surefire 100-round box magazine, and not a “C-Mag”* type drum magazine such as you have posted there. This was a good thing because the magazine he was using has proven to be less than “surefire” and it jammed on him.

100-hundred round AR magazines have never been really reliable. 60 rounds really seems to be the upper limit for a dependable 5.56x45mm rifle magazine. 100-round mags are for fools and mall ninjas.

Clinton also enjoys a significant lead in the contention for the nomination of her own Democratic Party. Of the Hispanic voters interviewed, 73% state that they would vote for her, while none of her Democratic rivals approaches showing double digits.

—snip—

If the Republican primaries and caucuses were held today, Trump would receive just 7 % of Hispanic Republicans’ votes, way less than Jeb Bush’s 38 % , Marco Rubio’s 22 % , and Ted Cruz’s 12 %. And if presidential elections were held now, Hillary Clinton would easily beat Trump among Hispanic voters. She would get 70 % of their votes and Trump 16 %.

But remember, kids — Trump’s gonna win the Latino vote. ROFL.

Part of this thread is pissing me off.

I rest my case on the ‘gun fucker’ slur.

Well, I was insulted by your calling me that and I downdinged you for it and now I’m gonna downding you for it again. I was being civil and non-hostile and you decided to fling that epithet at me. And that after I concurred with you on the matter of DipShit Roof without any contentions or caveats.

And another thing, semantics as I see it, is a language difference. You see it (in this thread’s context) as technical differences. Which proves my point. You *heart* guns and if anybody says something wrong about the technical aspect of guns, CALL THEM THE FUCK OUT!

We’re even as far as updings and downdings are concerned. And if Dark_Falcon downdings me, I could give less of a shit.

I still love ya.

And if you had simply said i have a love or affection for guns, that would have been acceptable. But you chose to deploy the term “gun fucker”, which I regard as a slur and to be used on people who act in a belligerent manner, which I do not do. Based on that I felt insulted.

I’ll call other LGF commenters names when they’re being disingenuous or - in Dark_Falcon’s case - overly semantic in the name of a cause I think is stupid, in his case guns Guns GUNS!

They’re just names. They’re insulting, yes. But I’m here to engage and debate. When I see fucking ridiculousness, I say it.

I’m a gun owner. I shot my first firearm when I was eight years old.

The second someone questions the *obsessiveness* of guns and gun ownership in the United States you’re immediately rebutted in the most ridiculous ways.

It’s just that there are ‘silly ridiculous’ rebuttals (which I admit mine was), and then there’s ‘nasty ridiculous’, which is what I thought the term ‘gun fucker’ was reserved for.

It’s also based on the fact that the word “fucker” still remains a fairly strong insult in most situations.

And with that, I’ve said all I can say on the matter. (heading upstairs)

To be fair, DF can be fairly pedantic on a range of subjects. Not just guns.

re: #259 Dark_Falcon

Dark_Falcon, the word ‘fucker’ is just that, a word. Yes, I called you a ‘gun fucker’, a term used often around these parts.

You should know, though, that me calling you a ‘fucker’ is pretty much meaningless. Context matters. You know I don’t think of you as a vile human being, far from it. The fact that you come here with your POV and still engage is astounding, and I love you for that.

But if someone calls you a fucker for being a Republican asshole around these parts, I’d carefully consider the motives of that person. More than likely they’re not being malicious, they’re being honest based on simple observation.

I still love ya.

re: #265 Chan Kobun

I goddamned care because there are good people who have a dangerous worldview about guns, and Dark_Falcon is one of those folks. A gun is not an accessory and a defining personality trait. It’s a tool of death.
