A great funny video for a song from The Bird and the Bee’s excellent new side, with some actors you may recognize. I loves me some Bird and Bee.

I’d like to thank soma.fm’s Lush for turning me on to stuff like The Bird & The Bee. It’s background music that pushes its way into your head without trying too hard.

Alright, alright, alright! My youngest little sister (I practically raised her) changed her wedding date and looks like I’ll be able to make it.

I had bought tickets for Aug 20 just to visit friends and my sister after the wedding, but I just switched my tickets to the new date and apparently Southwest has ANOTHER sale! And it was cheaper than the first sale I got. Shoot, I came out with a $16 credit!

Shit, this was me, when I saw that $16 credit.

I just KNEW I’d have to pay for a higher rate, but nope

Eric made mention downstairs about the cost of treating snakebite in this country.

This beauty was in my front yard.

This is 1 of 3 I have relocated out of the yard. I have seen prolly 7 of them in the 8 years we’ve lived here. They love the garden and are very timid and secretive. If it wasn’t for the dogs I’d just leave them be. They eat other snakes.

Antivenin for the Texas coral snake, which is neurotoxic and akin to the cobra, can run to $20k a dose. An adult may take 15-20 doses for a bad bite. They USED TO make it in Mexico but quit manufacturing it due to the scarcity of bites and the high cost to make it. Current stocks are most likely years out of date but it’s all they got.

I am grumpy at the video game I am playing.

Kingdom Hearts II, Final Mix.

I am stuck on a stupid Mushroom that I need to juggle in the air 85 times.

The highest I have gotten is 20-ist tries is 77. Either the Mushroom bounces in a weird direction, or one of my attacks goes past it, and it falls to the ground.

Whoever made that goal is a damn sadist.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took aim at The Huffington Post after the publication announced Friday it would only cover his campaign in the entertainment section.

In a scathing statement, Trump blasted the liberal news website, saying he has “never been a fan of Arianna Huffington or the money-losing Huffington Post.”

The Huffington Post said Friday it “wont take the bait” and told readers news about his campaign would be found “next to stories on the Kardashians and The Bachelorette.”

“Our reason is simple: Trump’s campaign is a sideshow,” the website’s Washington bureau chief Ryan Grim said.

this is blatantly an attempt by the huff po to make trump continue to take his candidacy seriously and help destroy the republican party by keeping him in the race

Good on Emma Didlake!

I spent a few hours this morning with my bro-in-law at the busy Baltimore Mondawmin Mall office of his ophthalmologist, Dr. Patricia Schmoke, wife of former Baltimore mayor Kurt Schmoke, and the game show The Price Is Right was on the boob tube and a 99 year-young lady spun the wheel. She didn’t win. but she was most gracious.

I’m 58 and can barely spin a dreidel , which probably explains why I’ve never ever spun a gimel. //

While I have a snake hook, I just used leather gloves to capture it. They are a mid (grooved) fanged snake. The fangs are small and they would have to chew a bit to inject venom. They are very fast, and as I said above, they want nothing to do with humans. Blink and they are gone. And as with all snakes, you may see it once, but chances are you will never see it again.

Here’s how to get the number. Go to Twitter -> Settings -> Blocked Accounts -> Advanced Options -> Export your list.

Then open the downloaded .csv file in Excel or whatever spreadsheet program you use and scroll to the bottom.

Your list may be exported as multiple files if it’s over a certain size.

I was at a dinner tonight and sitting with a group of older engineers from the Midwest, most of them retired at this point. Conservatives for the most part who seem to essentially utterly deplore Trump and think he should just shut up.

Then again, these are also people who are now working with charities and non-profits like United Way, American Cancer Society, etc. on a local level.

Dark_Falcon  Jul 17, 2015 • 8:47:36pm

And here we have a sad first: A Slate article that is objectively pro-Daesh:

The Chattanooga Killings Aren’t Terrorism
They are a rational, horrific act of war.
By William Saletan

When we target a training facility and kill its inhabitants, we don’t call that terrorism. We call it moral success. Last fall, at a poststrike briefing, the Pentagon’s spokesman showed reporters a video of a “residence” on the Iraq-Syria border:

This was a residential area that had been used for a training site and for a logistics site for [ISIS] fighters. It was engaged with multiple GPS-guided missiles. … And, as you can see, the aircraft targeted locations within the boundaries, within the fence line of the residence. … It was through the careful planning and coordination of U.S. Central Command’s combined air operations center, located in the region, that these strikes were successful with minimal collateral damage.

That’s how we evaluate our own strikes overseas: If we target a training site, and if the only people we kill are the fighters or trainees inside, our hands are clean. And that seems to be what Abdulazeez did to our own men in Chattanooga. We don’t yet know his motive. But if it turns out that he was angry about U.S. military action abroad—and if his response was to kill U.S. military personnel—does that make him a terrorist? Or just an enemy combatant?

Chattanooga wasn’t the first attack on a military facility in the United States, and it won’t be the last. We’ve been hit before, in Little Rock, Arkansas, and in Fort Hood, Texas. According to the New America Foundation, 1 of every 3 Americans who have been accused of planning domestic attacks since Sept. 11—that’s nearly 40 people, out of 119—targeted military sites.

I’m glad many of those miscreants are sitting in prison. And I’m sorry that a few succeeded. But if they’re going to come after us, it’s better that they target our service members than our schools and buses. We should aspire to more than winning this war, or the next one. We should aspire, all of us, to ending the deliberate killing of civilians.

William Saletan is going to catch Hell for writing this, and I’m going to help ensure he does. Because he has pissed me off massively.

Spent my last trip to DC doing a lot of the Smithsonian and the usual touristy stuff, as well as art galleries, etc. But the Spy Museum was a fun break and had some cool stuff. One of my favorites was the passive bug built into the Great Seal. Great story behind that.

I was a 20-ish teacher from Canada traveling to Singpore who had been born in New Zealand. ;P
The Great Seal theramin-designed bug is a great one. Took years for the US to figure out how it worked. Some real interesting spy artifacts mixed in with a bunch of fictional and their “your on a mission” thing. (Which I skipped after the first couple due to a long line to do the interactive parts.)

There also was something there on the Viet Cong Cu Chi tunnel system - which was neat since I visited those four years ago and got to see some of the tunnels (widened for tourists) and spider holes, traps, and other features*.

Some interesting stuff in the museum, but not a favorite that I will go back too.

* - Including 40-year-old extant bomb craters since the US carpet bombed the place with B-52s at least once.

I also made a docent’s day in the National Portrait Gallery today. She was in front of the portrait of Benjamin Franklin* talking about how he dressed while being presented to the King of France in the 1778(?) as one of the diplomats trying to arrange for loans and an alliance with France to aid the colonies.

I turned up about then, added a few useful comments, and then recommended a book that I had just finished called _A Great Improvisation_ on that very subject.

A good karma day. :)

* - It’s the portrait that is the basis of the Franklin on the $100. I also got a picture of the Hamilton portrait that is currently used on the $10.

Made sure to go there on my last trip. My favorite place is the Smithsonian, but a week was but a fraction of the time it would take to see even most of it. Did make a point of getting to the National Air and Space Museum. Some incredible history on display there, from space suits covered with moon dust to an SR-71. Spy Museum was a fun break, but I could spend months just working through the Smithsonian. So much worth studying instead of a quick walk by.

You’re upset about that article? Why? Moral confusion? What are you talking about? It’s not ‘moral confusion’, it’s semantic accuracy.

It’s a discussion of the nature of targets, military or civilian, and attempts to define the difference between the much abused term ‘act of terror’ and the underused term ‘act of war’.

The fact that ISIS does things and believes things we find atrocious does not automatically make anything they do terrorism.

re: #23 Dave In Austin

Eric made mention downstairs about the cost of treating snakebite in this country.

This beauty was in my front yard.

[Embedded content]

Cute little guy! They’ve really got to chew on you to get the toxin into you, as they have short, fixed fangs. And their heads is teensy weensy. That’s what, a 9” snake?

I stumbled across a three-footer in the Barton Creek greenbelt one day soon after I moved to Austin (in ‘89). I had no gear, so I just followed it and warned people off until it got into some heavy cover. Two guys, at separate points, offered to kill it. I told them that if they tried, I’d pick it up and throw it at ‘em.

Mocassins are mean. Timber Rats are mean. Most other vipers, especially coral snakes, just want to get out of your way.

(By the way, I got nailed by a copperhead, too. I was 13 years old and living in Fairfax Co., Va. I was a proud member of the Northern Virginia Herpetological Association and we were walking the C&O canal just north of the Potomac in Maryland, and, get this, looking to bag some copperheads. We had sticks, bags, gloves, boots, &c. We were rigged up!

And I stepped on a 4-footer in the autumn leaves who freaked and hit me just above the top of my boot on the outside of my right calf.

By the time they got me back to the trailhead and into the ambulance to Bethesda, I had screamed my voice away. The most fundamental pain I have ever experienced.

At Bethesda (this was 1969) a bunch of trauma surgeons with Vietnam experience, who had dealt with *lots* of snakebites came into the ER, looked at the bite site, confirmed that it was intramuscular, and stuck two big gauge needles above and below the bite and flushed it with saline.

If you want to know what a copperhead’s hemotoxin does to muscle tissue tissue, buy cheap frozen hamburger patties. That “pink slime” that cooks out of it? That was what came out of my leg. Some painkillers, continued flushing, and no anti-venom. Sick as a dog for two days and the next morning my lymph ducts looked like someone had taken a highlighter to them on the inside of my arms and legs.

I had a 1 1/2” X 3” crater in my calf for about a year until the muscle built back in. One 1/2” hole in the skin in the immediate area of the bite.

But the bottom line is that it was never going to be fatal. Most snake bites by pit vipers in the US aren’t. Maybe 5% without treatment.)

My apologies, I spoke in anger. The post is gone, so I’d ask you to remove the downding. I’m withdrawing the tweet as well and I’ll redo it properly.

Downding stands as a reminder for future reference to take a deep breath before posting something you will almost instantly regret yet again. Nobody has to withdraw posts anywhere near as often as you. I also think that while you are obviously entitled to dislike that piece, you are projecting things onto it that are not there.

re: #82 A Cranky One

Made sure to go there on my last trip. My favorite place is the Smithsonian, but a week was but a fraction of the time it would take to see even most of it. Did make a point of getting to the National Air and Space Museum. Some incredible history on display there, from space suits covered with moon dust to an SR-71. Spy Museum was a fun break, but I could spend months just working through the Smithsonian. So much worth studying instead of a quick walk by.

Darn, now I’d like to make another visit.

It’s pretty easy to spend multiple days doing the Smithsonian Museums and other stuff. Since I have extra time in the area after this weekend I have the option to come back into central DC and poke around more. I got in the central Air and Space Museum today - which was crowded. Hope to go out to the annex near Dulles to look at the big stuff on either Sunday or Monday. Beyond that I mainly was in and out of the other three other museums today. I skipped Natural History since the contents heavily overlap with other such museums of that type I have been in elsewhere.

And I was pressed for time since I was doing the monument loop, and missed the Jefferson anyways. :( Saw the WW2 monument for the first time, as well as the Korean War one. The latter looks like one that would border on creepy in the right weather or lighting conditions. I also got a real nice picture of a young woman standing next to the “Freedom is not free” engraving there.

On the wildlife side I got karma points back from missing catbird and heron pictures when up near Boston. While sitting on a bench a catbird holding a moth in its mouth hung around me twittering for more than five minutes - including landing on the bench about 5’ from me and staying there long enough for pictures. (As close as I can figure it was agitated since a few garden employees were 30-40’ down the hedge banding the chicks in its nest. Why it opted to hang out near me and not down near them I don’t know.)

I got pictures of a great blue heron at fairly close range down at a shallow pond along Constitution Avenue. I guess due to the constant pedestrian traffic it simply wasn’t being skittish. Didn’t use the telephoto, so I hope the standard lens shots come out well enough.

This still is terrorism in my eyes and Daesh does not get to claim its attacks in the US as lawful acts of war because the attackers were unlawful combatants. Now I grant that if they’d tried to follow the rules for lawful combatants they’d have been gunned down a long way short of their targets, but that’s how the rules are written: They are slanted to favor established regular forces.

And no, the unfairness of that doesn’t bother me.

The one in Dulles is a must see if you have time. I was awestruck by all the history making machines/equipment. It’s such a different experience seeing that stuff in person than just in photos or video; there is a more tangible sense of the heroism involved when you see the actual machines. I recall thinking on more than one occasion “They really did it in that!?!?!”

Looking forward to more selected pictures from your trip.

Oh, did they still have the giant Clinton portrait that feels like an acid flashback on display at the portrait museum? After all the famous historical portraits that one made me do a double take.

The set of Presidential portraits you mean? Yes. Though the highlight of course is the set of Gilbert paintings of the early ones. I didn’t give that museum the time it deserved. The section that has Brady/Gardner civil-war era prints is pretty engrossing as well. (Not original prints, but taking the original glass plates and using equivalent materials and chemicals to make new prints - which are put on display in rotation.)

I will probably post some stuff later in the week. Especially after the visit to the annex at Dulles. I am also thinking of going down to Quantico and visiting the USMC museum since I am sure there will be some interesting stuff there.

I spruced up my brief GotNwes post with some screencaps of @RonReaganLives tweets.

Twitter 7 - Chuck Johnson 0 — How’s that strategy working out, sonny?

Chuck C. Johnson has been banned from Twitter once again, after the behavior of a sock puppet account, @RonReaganLives, got a little too similar to that of his six previous accounts.

This is Johnson’s seventh banning since Memorial Day, an achievement for the record books.

Meanwhile, his parody of a blog has returned to its dormant state, because without Twitter Johnson don’t GotNews. Or so it seems.

So much for his vaunted strategy.

UPDATE: Before @RonReaganLives rejoined the dead, GotNwes captured some of the rapid-fire tweets in its timeline. We present them here as a public service, to show how NOT to be stealthy. Those familiar with the prose style of Chuck C. Johnson may notice some similarities between the two accounts.

As Charles has already mentioned, it takes a certain kind of abject obstinacy, or blind disregard for the facts, to continually challenge Twitter and lose each time. If his strategy is to embarrass Twitter, or show how tyrannical it is, it’s failing. If he had laid low with this new account, he could have still had access. But no, he got overconfident and outed himself. That takes some kinda talent, for sure.

Sargent was a force of nature. There’s always been a natural gap between what the public perceives as artistic merit, vs. what artists value, and I will say as an artist that Sargent was a beast.

I think there’s some merit to the argument that Modernism and Post-Modernism has de-valued rendering skill - or rather, allowed people with deficient rendering skill to make a buck from the public (But is that really a crime? that argument could go on forever). It is also a weird world we live in where some of the absolute best artists these days are all working their asses off for movie and game studios, cranking out concept art and comics. If you follow the thread of looking for real, solid, marks-on-paper skill - seeing a scene, drawing it accurately, rendering it in a beautiful way, and catching and communicating some kind of emotion with it - Sargent is up there with the best IMO. His feeling for light and facial expression is just amazing.

This is not to say that I don’t love modern things and only worship the academic, but I do believe the modern attitude that all art is equally valid expression is puffery. Some artists ARE better than others. ;)

I’m going to go off on a tangent here, but isn’t it interesting how quick the media was to label this a terrorist act while stepping on eggshells around calling Roof one?
Also notice how we were told right quick what Mosque he attended and the type of gun used? Didn’t see that with Roof either. Notice how quickly extremism was brought up with the TN attack and hardly mentioned with Roof?
It’s not just Roof, either. If the perpetrator is not Muslim they get treated with kid gloves for doing things sometimes worse. I found out more in the media in 24hrs about the TN attack than I ever did about Roof from the same media. Even though Roof’s attack killed more than twice as many people.

Watching California burn brings to question what our future will really be like.

What will the 2065 hold?

How about in 2215?

The deep future, say the year 4000? (… so tempted to throw in some Zager and Evans…)

One thing that immediately tells me that a TV show or major motion picture that is set in the far future has not been thought out is when people in the future are presented like our society today, in particular when it mirrors late 20th century American society with people clearly identifiable as African-American, or Northern European, etc.

What the likes of VDare and their ilk fear is indeed what is happening - people of different ethnic backgrounds having sex and thus having babies with quite mixed ancestry.

50 generations in the future, some 1500 to 2000 years from now, the people inhabiting North America will be brown-ish, blue eyes will be rarer, blond hair even rarer.

The future of language is harder to project (though I always give props to Firefly for portraying the future where Kanji and not a Latin alphabet predominates). The safest bet is that some evolution of Spanglish will be the most common dialect in North America.

Even if DNA editing comes the fore and we design our successors, the future North American society in the year 4000 will not look physically like our populations today.

Climate change and miscellaneous problems will force North American populations to move, to resettle. Old cities will be gone. The landscape will be changed. I suspect there will be few if any forests - see what humans have done to southwest Asia and southern Europe since the beginning of the Holocene for an example, where the entire ecosystem was changed by farming and the rapidly growing human population.

There is the chance we will simply kill ourselves off, but I consider that to be unlikely. Rather, I expect the total world population to oscillate, with major die-offs interspersed with population growth.

Much of what we cherish as products of our culture will be forgotten.

I can’t guess how much of the modern materialistic, scientific, view of the world will survive. Humans are innately religious and I expect that to be true still in 2000 years. The system of El and pantheon will continue in some form or other.

I’m not sure if cannibalism is on the menu or not.

Assuming more of the population will have to move pole-ward I expect that architecture will take on a form more reminiscent of Scandinavian villages. No matter if the world is 4 or 5C warmer in 2000 years, the seasonal changes will still be dominant and it will still freeze at night. Increased precipitation will mean increased snow-fall at high latitudes. I wonder if the communal-farm arrangement of life from old Scandinavia will come back strongly in the middle portion of this continent.

Even though the coasts will look quite different from today they will still be major population centers. Even if the ecosystem undergoes major trauma at the hands of man, the squid and seaweed will survive and I suspect will be major dietary components of those living by the sea.

Sea mammals will likely be extinct, as will all large, non-domesticated, land mammals.

Gambling and prostitution will not be extinct.

Marxism will not be around. Even with gene editing, humans will remain a hierarchical animal and so we expect some sort of feudalism-centered economy. Perhaps periods of meritocracy will come and go, sort of like ancient China, where skilled bureaucrats steer society. The importance of this type of structure is immediately realized when it comes to energy systems - when the last easy-to-find fossil fuels are burned the elite is society will have to keep nuclear power plants and advanced wind and solar systems going and thus there will always be a premium on a technical class and thus a highly skilled fraction of the working masses will be maintained at all costs.

But there will still be tyrants and they will have wars.

The land-based cuisine will be dominated by grass seeds (wheat, rye, oats, maize, rice) because grasses are pollinated by the wind and thus don’t need bees and butterflies and other winged creatures.

Indoor plumbing will still be around, for those who can afford it. Those who can’t… will have to try and survive cholera.

There will still be music and dancing. There will not be iTunes.

Some artists ARE better than others. ;)

From traveling and being in a few art museums with my brother I have noted we have somewhat similar tastes in paintings and art. We’re both “meh” on a lot of the modern art movement, enjoy portrait work to a degree (and with a preference for older art before photography appeared to allow portrait art to go much more impressionist. And Sargent by time period bucked this trend to a certain degree.) And both like landscapes/seascapes from the period where the artists were going past clear and pin-point into being a bit more impressionist.

Though I also took a few pictures of seascapes by 17th century Dutch masters yesterday since they seemed to blend the two really well. Might simply be that the style is “right” as compared to the work being done by New England artists in the early 1800s.

There was an in-joke while going through a museum in Gloucester on whether we’d be willing to hang a given portrait in our living room. Since we’d both seen Sargent’s “Gassed” in London I mentioned it and said that one would need a bigger living room in order to display that one.

en.wikipedia.org
(For those who want to skip the link the painting is roughly 20’ x 8’ in size. And depicts a bunch of WW1 soldiers who have been blinded by a gas attack being led back to a dressing stations. NOT a subject one normally displays in one’s living room.)

I wonder as well if it’s partially who the victims were.

Ben Carson speaks:

Presidential Candidate Ben Carson Visits Ottumwa

[…]

During his speech to Wapello County Republicans, Carson outlined his thoughts on abortion stating that it is wrong and it is the slaughtering of babies. He stated that he dedicated his career to helping heal babies, not giving women the mindset that they are free to kill their baby while it is in their body. He even stated that fetuses are more complex creatures than animals and fetuses cannot speak for themselves. Then Carson asserted that those who dedicate their lives to saving animals and the environment should instead fight for the lives of the babies being aborted every day.

Carson also discussed his views on religion.

“We must not yield to the secular progressives who want to remove God from our society,” said Carson.

Regarding taxes, Carson believes in a flat tax. He said taxing $1 from an individual who only has $10 is not only fair, but it enables that person to keep their pride and feel like they are making a contribution. Carson went on to say that a person making $1o billion should also be taxed 10%. He said that not overtaxing the rich will give them more room to charitably give and make more money.

Morning Green Footballers.

I seem to be on a damn Republican email list. And it is unwanted.

I mentioned a month or so back I was getting emails from Rick Santorum. That was ended after I started getting them daily.

This morning I have one from Ted Cruz.

Oh hell no.

Not only unwanted, but the unsubscribe feature does not work. And that is a big no-no in email world. I know, I used to do email blasts and found out how tough it can be.

So, Ted’s email is getting forwarded to every Can Spam reporting agency I can find. Already sent to the FCC site and Ohio Attorney general.

And the email sucks too. It’s some kind of Cruz newsletter and it has speech quotes and videos. A real spam monster.

It figures Cruz would get some kind of funky email list and that he wouldn’t be following email guidelines. Oh how I hate Ted Cruz.

And something else sad. Local NBC morning news had coverage of the Planned Parenthood video this morning. It was a short clip from the video and then the PP head apologizing. It also made mention of John Boehner looking into it and The Ohio AG Micheal DeWine checking into Ohio clinics. Of course, no mention that it all came from an altered video…because that would be doing a journalists job.

Edit…also I see another Marine died from the shootings in Tennessee. He was from Ohio, so local news is all over that. More sadness.

Poll says Cuccinelli still GOP favorite for governor’s race

Ken Cuccinelli lost the race for Virginia governor in 2013, but a poll released Friday shows he still registers strongly among Republican voters.

Public Policy Polling released a poll showing Cuccinelli was favored by 37 percent of Republican voters as the 2017 gubernatorial nominee, as compared to 16 percent for former U.S. House Majority leader Eric Cantor. Bill Bolling and Ed Gillespie tie for third at 8 percent, and Shenandoah Valley Sen. Mark Obenshain registered at 7 percent.

Dark,

That’s the problem with calling everything a war. The rhetoric coming from the right (not even extreme right) is that this is an existential conflict which we must win to secure the future of our grandchildren. We are non-stop bombing them in THEIR homes and training centers, and we call that war. This person is arguing semantics (as you are also known to do) that if we are in war, and have considered recruiting and training centers fair game, why is it terrorism for the enemy to do the same thing.

Maybe if the violence happy nuts in charge would slow down and consider solutions that aren’t so quick to involve violence, we would see less of it.

And his article was nowhere near ‘Pro-ISIS’ (or DAESH or whatever semantics you need to keep the moral outrage stoked). It was pointing out OUR moral hypocrisy in condemning our enemy for doing the exact same damn things we do ourselves, to include torture and killing of civilians.

And I say all that, as someone with multiple rotations to both Iraq and Afghanistan, currently serving on active duty.

It’s terrorism because our pilots are lawful combatants and their terrorists are unlawful ones. And because we’re good, they’re evil and we’re right, they’re wrong.

Terrorism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Terrorism is commonly defined as violent acts (or the threat of violent acts) intended to create fear (terror), perpetrated for an economic,[1] religious, political, or ideological goal, and which deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (e.g., neutral military personnel or civilians).

Semantics, if we are at “war” with ISIS, or terrorism, or even Islam, then those who march under the flag are enemy combatants. Hell, that’s the legal justification that we used to torture them at Gitmo, that they’re “enemy combatants” and not POWs.

You can’t have it both ways, insisting that our enemy observe the niceties of formal rules of war, but at the same time saying it’s totally lawful for us to blow them up with a drone while they’re taking a shit on the can.

In American English it appears as if “terrorism” now has become a synonym for any horrible and violent offense.

If we go that route, then I propose we talk about two categories:
(1) structured terrorism;
(2) sociopathic individual terrorism.

The first is carried out by organized groups with a goal of changing a nation, or group of nations, to end goals of the group doing the acts.

The second is an outworking of fantasy by an individual who needs to strike out at the people around him.

“War” has always been a problematic term - was the Korean conflict a police action or a war? And so on.

Though to engage your argument a bit, the president pretty has to do so, especially the current president. Any president who tried calling an attack on a military facility within the USA anything but “terrorism” would be pounced on by his political enemies, called ‘irresolute and weak’ plus ‘disrespectful to those who serve’. As we all know, in Barack Obama’s case it would even worse and nutcases would be openly calling for his murder on the grounds that his words would prove him a “Treasonous Islamocommie [N-Word]!!1”.

No, President Obama would be a fool not to call the Chattanooga Murder Spree “terrorism”. Failing to do so would gain him little and cost him much.

and collapsed into a meh squall line. It will still have strong straight line winds, lightning, and some power outages, but that central cell looked like a killer for twenty minutes or so.

The same thing happened with a storm last sunday about the same time at night.
I had ‘CCO on while I was falling asleep, but I never heard about the tornado warnings and I shut off the radio when they said the severe stuff had passed. I’ve got a few branches down in my yard this morning but I don’t see a lot of damage here. Parts of the western metro got nailed pretty good though. 132k people without power.

Well, from a distance it does look like an M-4, and Daesh does count female Jihadis in its ranks. The NYPD and the Coast Guard didn’t need to order a lockdown but they didn’t overreact badly. They stopped traffic, after all, and increased security. In Texas the family likely would have been shot dead and then posthumously called “Jade Helm Infiltrators”.

/I wish I was kidding about that last part.

For a bit more background, paintball is of interest there. A group has carried out some non-lethal (apparently hate-motivated) paintball attacks in the NJ-Staten Island area.

And you know who played Roy Cohn in a movie?

James Woods.

Small world of politics.

I always thought Woods did a hell of a job in that part in Citizen Cohn. Little did I realize years later it would be made pretty clear as to why. Method acting? No. Total immersion. Possession. And he seems to still be in the role.

Woods brought his kind of ‘manic’ (as in maniac) style to Citizen Cohen and it worked quite well. The problem is that an actor with that style has to walk a line close to the cliff of insanity, and eventually James Woods fell off that cliff.

BTW, DS, does Cliff of Insanity work for you as a band name? ;)

Funny you should mention that. Today I’m loading the Tale of Two Wastelands conversion. It binds together FO3 and FONV into one playable world. It makes the FO3 world, quests and all, accessible and playable by characters created in FONV - companions too. This could be big fun. Or, because this is an alpha release, I could wind up re-copying the factory fresh installs from a backup drive.

Edward Lee West’s Confederate flag collection now on its own

The North Carolina man who responded to the South Carolina church massacre by further covering his property in the rebel flag was arrested and jailed this week on a probation violation charge, records show.

According to court records, a judge issued an arrest warrant for West after he failed to show up last week for a court hearing on the probation violation charge. West, whose rap sheet is brimming with weapons-related charges, is serving two years probation for a misdemeanor conviction earlier this year for “Assault Pointing Gun.”

And because we’re good, they’re evil and we’re right, they’re wrong.

So what would we have to do to stop being good, and what would they have to do to stop being evil? Or is good and evil simply an immutable quality?

Our invasion of Iran is estimated to have killed 200,000 people, one way or another, and to have created ISIS. That’s a lot of bad, for the good guys.

OTOH, has ISIS killed that many?

When I look at ISIS, I see a group that has mad skillz at PR. They make the most of every killing by not only doing it in the most gruesome imaginable way, but also by videorecording it and sending it out to the world. They’ve killed a relative handful of Westerners, but they have millions of us looking under our beds for terrorists. They have half of America wanting to nuke the Islamic world, to expel Muslims, to burn mosques.

So, they excel at making others fear and hate them. And their goals are antithetical to everything we stand for. But they may well be less efficient at killing innocents than we are.

So, again - at what point in killing innocents do we stop being ‘good’?

Inside the Pluto ‘Truther’ Movement, Which Claims Flyby Was Faked

A man who goes by Crow Trippleseven questioned the initial Pluto images in a YouTube video last week that has garnered more than 50,000 views. “This is silliness and games and they are literally robbing the American people and then lying to them,” he says of NASA in the video, which Gizmodo picked up. His argument: How is it that NASA’s images of Pluto, supposedly taken from a only few million miles away, are of a poorer quality than those he took of Jupiter with his telescopic camera from 484 million miles away?

Referring to a photo of the New Horizons spacecraft, Crow says in the video it’s “probably sitting in a Burbank, Hollywood soundstage somewhere.” He adds: “If you want to see the real Pluto, I’m sorry to say, you’ve got to go to Disneyland.”

good grief.

In a war, we call unlawful combatants spies. They tend to get hung if caught. But using spies doesn’t make it not a war.

Donald Trump can go fuck himself by rolling up one of his older hairpieces. He’s not worthy to tie the shoes of either John, Kerry or McCain.

Let’s imagine if Donald Trump was ordered to perform the same tasks that both of those men, then naval officers performed:

Flying an A-4 Skyhawk on bombing missions opposed by large amounts of Anti-Aircraft Artillery (done by John McCain): Trump would’ve thought the task unworthy of his massive talent, lobbed his bombs in the direction of the enemy from a safe distance, and then called his father for help when his superiors torn him a new asshole for failing to obey his orders.

Commanding a PBR boat in the face of hostile enemy recoiless rifle fire, one hit of which could sink your vessel (done by John Kerry): Trump would “done a Charles C. Johnson” and given new meaning to the term “poop deck”.

Getty caption says it’s the flag of Hezbollah.

The logo itself is a stylized representation of the Arabic words حزب الله (ḥizbu-llāh) or “Party of God” in Kufic script. The first letter of “Allah” reaches up to grasp a stylized assault rifle. The logo also incorporates several other objects, namely a globe, a book, a sword, and a seven-leafed branch. The text above the logo reads فإن حزب الله هم الغالبون (fāʾinna ḥizbu llāh hum al-ġālibūn) and means “Then surely the party of Allah are they that shall be triumphant” (Quran 5:56). Underneath the logo are the words المقاومة الإسلامية في لبنان (al-muqāwamah al-islāmīyah fī lubnān) or “The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon”.

Blind Frog Belly White  Jul 18, 2015 • 9:58:16am

You’d think that Trump’s ludicrously over the top comments about ISIS and El Chapo, and his denigration of McCain’s service and his captivity by NVN would lead to a plummet in the polls, given his won record of avoiding any military service by any means possible. It’s almost like he’s trying to see what he can get away with and still be popular with the rage-driven base.

This makes it hard to see his campaign as anything but a performance piece, with him now pushing the envelope of ridiculousness. I mean, seriously - these are the people who post ‘Like if you think military service should be a requirement for the Presidency!’, the people who post ‘There are no pictures of Obama like this. NONE!’.

I thought it was that. The person who is holding the flag is a member of Hezbollah, fighting the so-called “Islamic State” in Syria. Note also that the Daesh symbol has been crossed out in green, a color Hezbollah often uses.

Of course, Hezbollah has found fighting in Syria to be no fun. To reverse an Idris Elba line from Pacific Rim, Hezbollah’s not ‘the resistance’ anymore, they’re a standing army.

It’s so damn funny watching GOP candidates attack Trump for stuff the base was saying back in 2008 when they opposed McCain’s nomination. Heck, I am pretty sure that Ann Coulter said pretty much the exact same thing.

re: #197 Decatur Deb

Could CL or another Arabic reader translate that flag? Looks for all the world like they have adopted “Don’t Tread On Me”.

Heh, it does look like the Gadsden flag from a distance. The writing is a very stylized Kufic script, which I find pretty much impossible to decipher. (I love looking at Arabic & Persian calligraphy, but can’t read 99% of it.)

That said, the yellow flag has me very confused. The photo originates from Getty Images and according to the photographer:

IRAQ-CONFLICT-IS

YOUNIS AL-BAYATI

A flag of the Shiite Hezbollah militant group flutters over a mural depicting the emblem of the Islamic State (IS) group in Al-Alam village, northeast of the multi-ethnic Iraqi city of Tikrit, on March 9, 2015, during a military operation by Iraqi government forces and tribal fighters to regain control of the Tikrit region from jihadists. After being forced out of the province of Diyala earlier this year, the IS jihadists are now fighting off a huge assault on the city of Tikrit as government and allied forces continue to work their way north towards the main IS stronghold of Mosul. AFP PHOTO / YOUNIS AL-BAYATI

gettyimages.com

Here’s a ginormous version if you want to see it better.

Here’s my attempt to isolate the flag and remove the distortions caused by the angle/wind. It’s not great, but it’s better (it’s not something I want to spend too much of my Saturday working on).

The weird part(s) is that the Hezbollah flag is yellow & green (not yellow & black), yet that’s still not the standard version in the photo—that version of the arm with the gun, while similar to Hezbollah, is actually the seal of the Revolutionary Guards (at least in part). Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the two flags from the IDF blog—it matches neither. But wait, it gets better! //

There’s also a new group in Gaza called Hesn:

There is unrest fomenting in the south and north of the Strip, with rise of new factions other than Islamic Jihad and its ilk. In Rafah in the south, salafists supporting al-Qaeda are helping terrorists cross from Sinai via tunnels. In the north, a group call “Hezbollah in Gaza” has reappeared. The group, Harakat as-Sabeereen Natzran Le-Palastin (“The Patient Ones’ Movement for the Liberation of Palestine”), which sometimes goes by the acronym of Hesn (“fortification”). Their flag is almost a mirror image of the Hezbollah banner, with the small addition of a map of greater Palestine. […]

ynetnews.com

Here’s the Hezbollah flag next to the Hesn flag. In some photos, like this one, the Hesn flag is yellow instead of orange.

Here are all four flags/logos next to each other. As you can see, the one from the (Getty) photo, while similar, doesn’t actually match any of them. You guess is as good as mine regarding who it might belong to.

To be fair, B_S, both Graham and Perry did go after Trump for those things he said about Mexicans, though Perry only did so after Jeb Bush had attacked Trump over the issue.

But I do hope this latest spewing holes Trump’s campaign below the waterline.

Gotta give it to Trump.

He has more than put the ‘clown’ in the “clown car.”

Before Trump that was just a fun phrase. Trump has elevated it the true Bozo level. Totally different clown suit and makeup too. He doesn’t need white face or a big red nose. In a way he has that naturally and no one has clown hair like Trump. Very creative costuming as captured by the New Yorker cover image.

But the real clowning is these statements harpooning everyone standing. And of course so many ready to buy into it, while others say he has got to be joking. Unprecedented levels of new political humor. Almost black comedy performance art. Brilliant…Bozo!

A month?

That might not be enough to totally wreck the party. I’m thinking to make suitable and permanent change he needs to get through to sometime next year. Clowning it the whole way.

And besides…since the GOP National Convention is going to be in Cleveland and me being an Ohioan, I want to see Cleveland get as much out of this as possible media wise and a Trump still causing trouble right up to a convention would be a key to the best controversy and messiness.

re: #133 Feline Fearless Leader

Picasso’s early art, up until approx 1917 is not always what one would expect from Picasso.

pablo-ruiz-picasso.net

pablopicasso.org

Re size of paintings, the first thing that struck me when I saw Guernica was its size (approx 11’ X 26’).

Then the emotion hit.

Typo. I meant to say “months”, i.e., the longer Trump and his poisonous views are front-and-center, the more he sinks that GOP.
