As we pointed out a few days ago, Donald Trump dodged military service during the Vietnam War with a series of student and medical deferments, like the privileged sons of many wealthy people did.

But that hasn’t stopped him from saying horrible things like this, about Sen. John McCain:

“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

And now other Republicans smell blood in the water:

Bill Kristol, of course, has been heavily promoting Donald Trump before this.

And the harshest words are coming from former Texas Governor Rick Perry, who’s calling Trump “unfit to be commander in chief.” Well, duh.

Congratulations, Republicans. This is your face now. You laid the foundation of a crazed xenophobic base that thrives on mean-spiritedness, and Donald Trump moved in and built a casino on it.

You know, I really feel stupid now. I mean, when people talked months ago about a Trump candidacy, I took it as the joke it seemed to be at the time. The man hadn’t made any serious effort in 2012, and had used the increased attention to promote his show. So when he started making noises again this year, I figured he was wasting everybody’s time and so focused on Ted Cruz being the albatross around the GOP’s neck.

But God Almighty, I never feel more happy about being so wrong. I predicted that Ted would be the spoiler, as he’d boast about being a guy who pissed off people on both sides of the aisle. But Havana Ted on a good day couldn’t come close to the rank stupidity and absolutely biblical level of assholishness that is Donald Trump.

John McCain for years has been all talk. He is like most politicians. He goes the way the wind blows. When the polls change he changes. That being said Trump should not have said what he said.

But I do not think it matters one bit. The debt is 19 trillion. Student loan debt is 1.3 trillion. Credit card debt is 1 trillion. Manufacturing never has come back. Just last week Ford said they were closing a Michigan plant and moving to Mexico. The real unemployment rate is 16%. There are more part time workers than ever. Wages are at 1990 levels.

We are heading for a Greece situation.

People vote their pocket book. Bernie Sanders is the only one talking about the problems and solutions. Hillary says nothing but panders to her base. The Republicans got 15 candidates. Who knows who will be the nominee against a probable Hillary contest.

The winner next year will be the one that talks solutions to problems and energizes their base. Bernie Sanders energizes people. That is why Obama won twice and why the Democrats lost badly in the mid terms. When Obama was on the ballot his base went out and voted. When not they stayed home.

Bernie Sanders may be way down in the polls but it is early. I believe he will have a better chance against any Republican nominee because he energizes the base. The Democrats are not going to turn out for the general election if Hillary is the nominee. She simply has no charisma and no charm

Bernie is the man that can win in 2016.

I agree with you and I am expecting to vote for Bernie in the primaries. However, this is a legit criticism of those who clamor for a “true progressive” voice. Unfortunately, I think Bernie would end up disappointing some of his most strident supporters upon election. I really do get why people want an alternative to Clinton.

Hell as I said I’m probably going to vote for Sanders if he’s there but I do wish some of my fellow liberals would realize that there is only so much a president himself can do. If we saw Obama who started out with a much more favorable Congressional environment than Obama struggle than what does one expect with Sanders? I just hope if Sanders were to somehow be elected that his many supporters on the left wouldn’t cry sell out or traitor the second he’d be forced inevitably to compromise.

Even if Christie hadn’t run Jersey into the ground and been under the crosshairs of Bridgegate, he was already DOA in terms of his presidential ambitions the moment he treated the President as anything besides a colleague in getting the state up again after Sandy.

The only other sure killer has been showing any sort of compassion to minority groups, such as Perry’s pointing out the realities of immigration during the 2012 primaries. But Trump’s already done enough on that front that he’s got the wingnuts absolutely convinced that he’s pro-Hispanic.

Look, I am a socialist (Member DSA, IWW, etc), even more so than Senator Sanders. Have been all my adult life, even while in the US Army under Ronnie Raygun. He’s a good man and he’s drawing crowds at the moment but he will not get the nomination, unfortunately. He is not going to beat that machine & he knows it. The best we can do is get him enough leverage going into the convention to have an impact on the platform and what Hillary actually runs on. Dragging from her Blue Dog conservative positions to a centrist place like Obama is actually do-able and needs to be what we work on accomplishing.

But the rants you’ve been posting here show little attachment to reality, son. Even if Bernie got nominated and, somehow despite the poison of Socialist in his record got elected, he would not have anywhere near enough votes in congress to do anything but sit and spin wheels for four years.

Lastly, we are not even close to a situation like Greece. I am not going to go into the technical details but you really should go back to a macro class and relearn a bit about what the debt is and isn’t and how many nations are dependent upon us having that debt.

I must confess that for a moment or two, I have pondered this very question. Trump has been so ridiculous - even more ridiculous than people like Pat Buchanan when he ran in the 90’s, or Ross Perot. Even more ridiculous than Michele Bachmann or Herman Cain in the last cycle (and that’s saying something) - that I have to wonder if his tongue isn’t firmly implanted in cheek. It doesn’t surprise me at all that few, if any, prominent right wing or Republican commentators have pointed out that Trump and his daughter contributed more than $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation, or that he once called for single payer health care during a flirtation with a presidential campaign back in 2000. This is information that a milliseconds long Google search will turn up, and yet mentions of this seem to be scant. Trump’s tongue isn’t firmly implanted in cheek, of course. He is the real deal. If you want to court the American right, you have to be batshit insane.

The Greece debt analogy is not only utterly ridiculous but a conservative talking point. The differences are simply enormous.

US public debt to GDP is 45% that of Greece.
We actually hold the vast majority of our own debt.
The US dollar is the reserve currency of the world.
The US is still the largest economy, China did not overtake us as was reported last year.
We are projected to remain the largest economy past 2030.
More to the point our economy is comparatively far more stable.
We have stronger environmental protections.
We have far stronger financial regulations.
We actually have a Social Security and Medicare system.

Hillary will not energize the base. Young people who voted overwhelmingly for Obama will not go to the polls at anywhere near the numbers. The same with minorities! She may be a Clinton but she does not have her husband’s touch with the public. She was 40 points up in the polls in 2007 and did not get the nomination. This time there is no Obama running against her so she probably will get the nomination but it still is too early to say for sure.

Sanders can energize the base. His crowds show that already. People go to sleep when Hillary talks. Ironically I think Hillary’s best chance of becoming President is if Trump is the nominee. I think she loses to everyone else.

And Sanders has a ceiling of voters he can get, you might not want to believe it but Sanders calling himself a Socialist will hurt him with a lot of voters.

Shouting down candidates doesn’t solve anything. Of course they should explain their views on these issues, but actually let them. Let’s throw out the uncomfortable questions, I’m all for that. The most important thing Bernie supporters should be doing if they actually want to advance their candidate’s chances is to pay attention to why Hillary lost in 2008. Because so far what I see is them doing (and yes this means you The Mulai) is the exact same shit that cost Hillary the nomination then, running on fear and little more than vociferous raw assertions that the other candidate can’t win.

There’s a reason that you don’t see Bernie going negative himself, because he’s smarter than a lot of the young people backing him. His people need to reign in his inexperienced supporters who don’t realize how counter productive fear mongering is, especially when it’s based on fundamental ignorance about how things actually work.

If you want to talk about the problems of debt please do so, I recommend focusing on the discretionary defense budget. Trying to force ridiculous analogies however to Greece simply because Greece is in the news is an amateur move. It might score points with other people who do not understand economic basics, but it’s seriously unappealing to those who do.

I want a pony.

Saying you want something isn’t a solution to actually getting it.

There are things we can probably do in terms of tax incentives and import duties to bring some manufacturing back, but it won’t bring nearly as many jobs back as were lost. What manufacturing does come back will be largely automated. Also, import duties have a way of escalating into trade wars that will do far more to harm what export market there is for the goods we do manufacture.

To bring back more jobs we’d have to do the kinds of things Sanders would never ever talk about let alone do, like lower wages, worker safety and environmental regulations.

I have no idea why this kind of empty Pollyanna rhetoric appeals to you or why you would think for a second that it would appeal to others. Treat me like an adult, acknowledge that the modern world is complicated with no quick and easy fix that can simply be willed into existence via raw assertion and I’ll take your arguments far more seriously.

Jobs. Some manufacturing jobs are already coming back to the US because companies are realizing it’s cheaper to produce them here than overseas and ship them.

Some will continue to be offshored because costs are cheaper elsewhere on those items. Even Trump chose to have his clothes line - ostensibly for the well to do and for a premium crowd - made in Mexico and China rather than in the US.

He wanted to maximize HIS profits and couldn’t care who didn’t have jobs here in the US because of it. That’s all on Trump.

So, to hear him say how he wants to make the US great again or that we need to bring jobs back here, it all starts with one nutty billionaire who has the means to make a single decision - forgo some of the profits he would make offshoring jobs, and bring the jobs back home.

He can’t and wont do it because he wants to maximize his profits, ignoring how much more is possible if more people have access to well paying jobs and how that spills out over the economy.

It continues to show Trump is an economic illiterate whose success is grounded not only in a billion dollar inheritance from his dad, but who’s managed to make everyone else pay for his business mistakes - multiple bankruptcies.

Bad business decision? Carrying too much debt? Bankruptcy.

Bang. Zoom. Presto-chango - all gone.

But his personal fortune remains because that’s all shielded from the corporate wasteland he’s left behind.

Trump has managed to bankrupt casinos on multiple occasions, even though the House is always supposed to win. He’s even managing to bankrupt a golf course in Puerto Rico, which is a pretty hard thing to do when you’re catering to the well to do.

Have you tried to watch The Ed show lately?

I think Ed is running Sanders television campaign at the very least. Ed tries to talk about Hillary but you can just tell he wants to push for Sanders. And to me it is rather blatant and not good journalism, but we all know journalism isn’t associated with much these days in the media.

And Ed is all about manufacturing coming back to America and worrying about China manipulating currency, etc.

John McCain for years has been all talk. He is like most politicians. He goes the way the wind blows. When the polls change he changes. That being said Trump should not have said what he said.

But I do not think it matters one bit. The debt is 19 trillion. Student loan debt is 1.3 trillion. Credit card debt is 1 trillion. Manufacturing never has come back. Just last week Ford said they were closing a Michigan plant and moving to Mexico. The real unemployment rate is 16%. There are more part time workers than ever. Wages are at 1990 levels.

We are heading for a Greece situation.

People vote their pocket book. Bernie Sanders is the only one talking about the problems and solutions. Hillary says nothing but panders to her base. The Republicans got 15 candidates. Who knows who will be the nominee against a probable Hillary contest.

The winner next year will be the one that talks solutions to problems and energizes their base. Bernie Sanders energizes people. That is why Obama won twice and why the Democrats lost badly in the mid terms. When Obama was on the ballot his base went out and voted. When not they stayed home.

Bernie Sanders may be way down in the polls but it is early. I believe he will have a better chance against any Republican nominee because he energizes the base. The Democrats are not going to turn out for the general election if Hillary is the nominee. She simply has no charisma and no charm

Bernie is the man that can win in 2016.

Because this is first and foremost a political blog, where people come on line to comment about what they think about the political situation int he world, with a heavy bent towards American Politics due to the owner of the blog being an American.

American politics are super heavily polarized right now because the right wing is trying to shift the Overtone Window until it makes you a “communist” to say you don’t want to cut medicare to pay for more abstinence education programs..

In short, a political blog, is full of people who tend to see things, want to comment on things through a political lens… who would have expeceted that?

Wrong, no right wing troll. I would say you understand little how markets work. Right now there is a huge concern about the liquidity of the bond market. This is not a right wing, left wing or any wing issue.

There are many economists from all wings that understand that when the train turns and the bond holders who finance the debt want their money there is going to have to be enough buyers out there or interest rates will move up drastically to attract the buyers.

The bond market now is starting to show illiquidity.

Dear Dr. Trump:

First of all, I want to apologize for calling you merely “Mr.” in my last letter. I had no idea that you had received a honorary doctorate in business from the prestigious Liberty University. Did you meet Jerry Falwell when you were there? (Upon recollection, I think he might have already died - but if there’s one man that could “rise from the dead,” it’s Rev. Falwell!) It is quite an honor to receive an honorary doctorate from Liberty U, and puts you amidst such luminaries as Glenn Beck and that guy who owns Chick-Fil-A. Awesome!

I also want to congratulate you on your recent rise to the top of the polls! 17% of the voters in a poll may only represent .0000000001% of the voters (I just came up with those numbers, but I think they sound about right), but it’s five times better than .00000000001% of the voters.

Anyway, I realize that it’s only been a couple a days since my last letter, so I understand if you haven’t yet had time to digest it - but I find that I have so many ideas for your campaign in my brain that they’re practically foaming at the mouth to get out!

First, you need a Theme Song. I don’t know what it is with these namby-bambi rock and roll guys who get all bent out of shape when somebody they disagree with politically plays their songs - you would think they would appreciate the exposure! Neil Young (more like Neil Old, ha, ha!) should be grateful you’re playing his music.

I think you should snap up the rights to the song “Lump” by The Presidents of the United States (how’s that for being ironical!). Heck, it’s not like they’re doing anything with it anyway! You could then rewrite the lyrics to fit your campaign, like: He’s Trump, He’s Trump, He’s In My Head, He’s Trump, He’s Trump, He’s Trump, Something Something Something Something. (I don’t think “He might be dead” is appropriate. Do you? ‘Cause we can sure keep it if you say so!)

Next, you should consider a massive TV advertising campaign. I have an idea where we take the footage of you on your TV show “Shark Tank” and alternate images of all the other Presidential candidates with film clips of you yelling “YOURRRRR FIIIIIIIRED!” at each one of them. (If you think this flies in the face of my last letter, I suppose it does a bit - but I have to admit that my idea for “The Avengers of the Republican Party” always was a long shot, because I mean what are you going to do about Tom Cruz? That guy doesn’t play nice with anybody! Those Canadians get mad at everything!

Besides, most all of them are “Ex-” something or others, so it’s not like they have jobs to begin with.

Third, you should achoo the traditional mainstream media like the Sunday news shows. You’ve already got the politically savvy vote locked up; you need to attract the “slow information voter” that the media is always talking about. So in that vein, you should go on ALL the shows EXCEPT for the news programs! For example, you could go on Saturday Night Live and shout “LIVE FROM NEW YORK, YOURRRR FIIIIIIIRED!” Or “Who’s The Boss”! Or maybe you could convince Dos Equis to put you in one of their commercials as The Most Interesting Billionaire In The World! (“I don’t always run for President, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis!”) It’s a win-win situation! You get boatloads of FREE exposure (you can’t buy that!), and Dos Equis gets a natural born leader to advertise their product! There’s nothing wrong with a few brewskies now and again (and again and again!) - and I’m sure a man who’s always on the go like you could stand to put on a few pounds.

Maybe you could go on WWE Raw again and shave Vince McMahon’s head again; that would completely lock up the teen vote!

Well, I’ll sign off for now; I need to save something for the next letter. (I’ll probably talk about Family Issues, because if there’s one area where you’re “below the belt,” it’s Family Issues!)

I hope you know that you will always have my respect and aw. Without a doubt you’ve proven yourself more than worthy of handling the world’s toughest job. If there’s one thing the world doesn’t need right now, it’s a man who will fly off the handle at the drop of a hat. We need someone as cool as a cucumber in the White House, and that cucumber is YOU!
