A great many veterans had served in foreign armies before coming to the US. Rick Rescorla, who participated in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley and lost his life at the WTC on 9-11, had served in the British army. Rescorla is the soldier featured on the cover of Josepth Galloway’s book about the Ia Drang battle, We Were Soldiers Once and Young
There were hundreds more ex-British soldiers in Vietnam, a fair number of Canadians, and there were even a dozen or so US Vietnam veterans who had been in the Soviet forces at one time.

And frankly, I am still having trouble trying to break my ways of thinking (though my Imam will be having me meet a local Republican soon-ish), especially because of stuff in my past where someone who was an evangelical (this happened a lot in Colorado Springs) would tell me one thing, then later tell me another, or even worse, hear about it from someone else.
It doesn’t come across online, but I still struggle with it in person. I have serious paranoia problems. Whether someone is hiding something from me, if someone truly means what they say, or even worse, paranoia about myself. Did I mishear something, or is my judgement about people poor?
I like Christianity in general. I may not believe it anymore, but I can appreciate it and the good that it has done. I think the mainline Protestants are good, and many of the Catholic Orders are as well, and that Francis is a great leader.

Indeed, though the Serbian-made guns had their firing rate lowered to 1,000 rounds per minute. But then they had to reduce the rate of fire in order to make use of the MG-34 type saddle drum that gun has been fitted with. Otherwise the gun would empty the drum so fast as to make it worthless.

If you’re for Sanders in the Presidential because you’re for his policies, then logic dictates you would be for more Democrats in the House and Senate so he would get a chance to implement some of his policies.

Virginia really hasn’t had any good Congressional Dem candidates to run for senate or governor since with the exception of what is now Gerry Connolly’s seat (former Tom Davis seat, a moderate R) the districts that the Dems have in Congress are in an overwhelmingly Democratic part of the state. I really liked Tom Pereillo who won the district where UVA is but sadly he lost his re-election in 2010. I had a lot of respect for him since unlike Glenn Nye from the Va Beach district, he voted for ACA and stood up for his decision. Both men lost but Pereillo stood on principle.

In one paper that did the numbers nearly 60 percent of Islamic terrorists (even those raised in the West) had engineering backgrounds, and even corrected for demographics, the numbers are disproportionate.
I am still stumped as to why so many engineers are reactionary. Thoughts on why?

Another thing I recall is Webb had some campaign lit and images that some thoght painted his opponent, Miller as an anti-semitic caricature. I’d have to give it another look really but I do remember thinking that the attacks by the Webb campaign on Miller in the primary were unfair even though I ended up voting for Webb because Miller to his credit had actually a track record with the Democratic Party. Jim Webb as we got at had been Naval Secretary in a Republican administration and had supported Bush in 2000 and I think even 2004 too. Not sure.
I also heh thought Webb had an unhealthy obsession with the Scots-Irish but who am I the guy with a 69th New York inspired tattoo and numerous books about Ireland to call anyone out on that.

Engineers are measurably more politically conservative than scientists, at least in the United States. Having lived with and among engineers… one thing I noticed that was quite common was seeing the world in black and white. Their world is numbers, proofs, solid stuff that is predictable. Gray areas, mushy feelings, stuff they can’t fix is uncomfortable. Bravado is a cover.

I think the reason they’re more conservative than scientists because as a scientist your job is to try as hard as you can to prove what you think is true, is not. It’s all about asking questions.

Many engineers like precision and structure. They’re uncomfortable with uncertainty and non-controllable situations, which causes them a lot of problems in social situations.
Reactionary political philosophy is all about structure and control. So engineers are going to be drawn to it.
ETA: This isn’t a phenomena unique to engineers. When I was a computer programmer many of my colleagues were quite reactionary in nature. I’ve even met artists and writers who suffered from the OCD light that demands structure and control.

Tame Impala is this week’s buzz band at MN Public Radio’s rock station (The Current). I’ve been switching the station all week whenever they play them.
The Current’s band of the week is usually some piece of crap that has a lot of industry chatter. Engineering is a field where there is A RIGHT ANSWER, and everything else is WRONG. Even chemistry and medicine are fuzzier than that; humanities are *extremely* fuzzy. Non-engineers have to learn to consider multiple possibilities, many of which are acceptable.
