As big a cynic as I am, I’m pretty sure if I show that picture to a wingnut, he’ll insist that that has nothing to do with the Confederate flag and the more deluded ones will even insist that he’s probably a “plant.” Unfortunately, if we went with the argument that everybody parading around white supremacist symbols was a “plant,” then they’d outnumber the “patriots” marching around with the Stars and Bars.

Snopes again:

Is South Carolina going to ban the sale of Tylenol because picking cotton out of the bottle is reminiscent of slavery?

Snopes categorizes this as “FALSE,” since they don’t have a category for “jaw-droppingly stupid horse manure that makes people look dumber than a sack of dirt.”

Remember what I said at the end of the last thread? I just found a link to this in my Google Alerts:

Goldberg: Nuance on Islamic terror, none on Confederate flag

Lot’s of false equivalence & disingenuousness, which I’m sure will surprise you (//). You’d think Muslims were out in the streets protesting that the black jihadi flag should be considered part of our “heritage” and that we want it flown over our mosques & schools.

SQUIRREL!!

Also this from Geller over at Breitbart, which I was actually kinda looking forward to because it’s so predictable:

The Empire State Building Submits to Islam donotlink.com

Some people were very displeased with the JPost for tweeting it:

These people don’t understand the difference between submission and simply being kind and inclusive. When the local store wishes me a merry Christmas, I’m not submitting to Christianity. When they make it mandatory for my kids to pray in school, I am. Lighting a building and telling people to enjoy their own religion builds trust and peace. Maybe that’s why they’re so mad about it.

MINNEAPOLIS — Researchers believe they found the grave of a man who could be considered the first black male slave freed by Abraham Lincoln, tracking his final resting place to the cemetery of a former Minnesota psychiatric hospital.

William Henry Costley was just 10 months old in 1841 when Lincoln, who was still a young lawyer, won an Illinois Supreme Court case freeing Costley’s mother from indentured servitude — a status that historians say would have been akin to enslavement for the black woman and child at that time. That was 22 years before Lincoln, as president, issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring slaves in rebel states not under Union control free.

Blind Frog Belly White  Jul 19, 2015 • 2:21:32pm

From downstairs:

The fact that smallpox was eradicated before breast cancer tells us all we need to know about the priorities of “science”.

This falls into the category of ‘Not even wrong’ - a statement so far removed from making sense that you can’t even categorize it as incorrect.

Smallpox was eradicated because it’s ONE virus that doesn’t mutate much, part of a family of viruses that also don’t mutate much, and a single vaccine works for pretty much every human on Earth. It required no knowledge of molecular biology, virology, embryonic development, or even microbiology to figure it out. All it took was the observation that if you had ever had Cowpox (Vaccinia), you didn’t get Smallpox(Variola)

Breast cancer, like pretty much all other cancer, is a unique disease in each individual cancer patient. Many of the biggest steps in BC research have been in more narrowly defining different types, so that the best treatment can be used.

Most cancer arises from somatic mutations in the course of life. The only way to eradicate human cancer is to eradicate humans.

re: #56 Blind Frog Belly White

Astoundingly stupid doesn’t even begin to compare smallpox and the vaccination that was developed with Jenner more than 200 years ago (variolation) to breast cancer, a disease that isn’t exactly one disease, but an amalgam of different kinds of cancers that strike breast tissue.

Some forms of breast cancer are defined by the kind of tissue affected, while others are by what factors are expressed. Each has its own unique characteristics and treatment paths. Some respond to hormone-related therapies, while others don’t. The more researchers dig into cancer, the more they see how various proteins and hormones play roles, and that some can be switched on or off by the hormones and proteins at play.

Vaccination for breast cancer can’t come soon enough - the costs for treatment, let alone recurrence or mets is huge.

Good afternoon Lizards from a somewhat warm northern Virginia.

Udvar-Hazy Center (Smithsonian Air&Space Annex out near Dulles Airport) was wonderful. Best venue yet for viewing and photographing aircraft yet. Multiple catwalks for viewing from different levels and angles, and things not so tightly stuffed in that you can’t get clear pictures.

Afternoon was spent driving and also some walking around the NPS Park at Manassas (Bull Run). Very hot and I got a bit too much sun. But also caught a short guided walk with a ranger at one spot that was pretty good. (A few lizards won’t agree, but he thinks the Iron Brigade was the best unit in the Union Army.)

Final adventure was getting to hotel and finding out I’d book reservations for *next* week. (ACK) Managed to cancel those, but had to find a different hotel using the internet since the one I was at was fully booked tonight. So I found another hotel, but not as good a deal as I originally thought I had.

Pictures will be posted once I download the camera. Possibly tonight, but that will depend on how much beer I drink when I head out to find food in an hour or so. (Resting in the room currently after checking in and then taking a cool shower.)

It was interesting and depressing all at once - interesting because of its significance and just how close it was to DC as the crow flies, and depressing due to the fact that the battlefield is bisected and sliced and diced by all manner of highways and development.

I know there are efforts to try and preserve adjacent properties for eventual integration into the battlefield, but it’s still a patchwork.

Especially if you’re including some of the additional maneuvering of that campaign and the associated skirmishes. There are small parks for Chantilly and a few other locations as well. And the 2nd Bull Run driving tour is essentially 10 stops - though there is a network of trails connecting them as well. On a cooler day I would have ventured out further beyond just hiking out to overlooks or particular markers.

The ranger at Brawner Farm said that once they cleared one of the woods to return the area to open space like it was in 1862 a lot of the accounts of the battle made more sense some of the old sight lines referred to were there again.

We’ve had water fall from the sky for 2 days in a row.

I’m thinking I may need to begin working on an Ark.

Heh.

I’m thinking it’s not even August yet - that’s the hottest month of the year, typically. Maybe, with any luck, it’ll be like last August, cool and somewhat rainy. After this little mini-heatwave we’ve been having the last couple of weeks, I’d look forward to water falling from the sky.

Very. Sit through that light at least two cycles on a normal day. That park has a great trail network as well, perfect for running and hiking. I love the trail along Bull Run for trail runs, the Bluebells in the spring are spectacular.

I saw a lot of ripe blackberries along the trail near Deep Cut. Nothing to put them in, and also did not feel like risking a tick infestation either.

And I should have added, the Czech Republic is actually experiencing drought conditions:

The Czech Republic has been afflicted by drought due to the mild winter and low precipitations in the past weeks, which has caused river water and underground water levels to decline considerably, daily Právo writes today, citing Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMÚ) deputy head Jan Danhelka.

The snowfall was extremely low last winter. In addition, the maximum share of water in snow, 1.42 billion cubic meters, was registered as long ago as early February, Danhelka said.

In total, only less than 80 percent of the usual precipitation volume has been registered this year, with March being the last month with above-average precipitations. The water deficit has been rising since, Danhelka said.

praguepost.com

Quite true; we had a mild winter last year and the winter before, even more so. Only a few days of snowfall (about a week or so) - mostly it was just cold and rainy.

There is also a pretty busy state highway through part of the park at Valley Forge. So highways bisecting historic parks is not anything unique to the Bull Run area.

Hmm, hotel’s restaurant is closed tonight. And also has poor reviews. So I get to climb back in the oven that is my car and wander down the highway a bit. Yelp seems to indicate a lot of interesting options at least.

You never hear about liberal policymakers refusing and opposing relief aid to red states. You do hear about conservative policy makers doing the same for blue ones. That alone is why I’m proud to be a liberal. I may disagree with the people in red states like hell but if a natural disaster is to effect the people there, I want prompt and the best aid possible.

It’s ironic though since conservatives are constantly accusing liberals of being victims (Hi, Mitt enjoying your summer not being president again?) but when push comes to shove, conservatives are some of the biggest whiners and fake victims around. Whereas liberals complain about things like economic or racial inequalities, conservatives like to bitch about other people having the same rights as them (I.E. SSM), pointless bs (Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas), or “political correctness run amok (Why can’t I say the N-Word).

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been raised by tolerant, loving Christians, so I know that ‘Christian’ doesn’t mean the hatefilled pusbags that tout themselves as the sole representatives of Christianity.

My older boy’s GF has a much dimmer view of Christianity, having been raised by angry, rightwing Christians. I was talking about my family and she was genuinely surprised that all Christians weren’t like her parents.

Right but here’s the other thing that when you think about it is stupid. Christmas and New Years Day fall a week from each other. A week. I can’t think of two major holidays that are that close together. I frankly don’t care what someone says to me. Well we are liberals by and large not that there’s anything wrong with that but I think most people here even our more lefty members are at heart well grounded in reality. As I said yesterday, I think I will likely vote Sanders in the primary but at the same time, I don’t feel the need to throw a fit every time I don’t get what I want ideologically. Do I wish ACA was more extensive? Sure, I do but at the same time I’d rather some progress over none. People like Mulai want it all or nothing and that’s why they don’t fit into the crowd here.

Years ago, when we had cats and no kids. Mrs. FBW was taking a bath. One of our cats was fascinated. Stood on her hind legs, sniffing at the bath and Mrs. FBW in it. Then she leapt, from the floor, onto Mrs. FBW’s head.

I had been sitting quietly in the living room, listening to some music while my wife took a nice, relaxing bath, when suddenly…

“JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!!!” accompanied by a lot of splashing, a cat’s yowl, and a gray tabby tearing out of the bathroom and down the hall, scrabbling for traction when she turned the corners.

Mrs. FBW never took a bath with the door open again.

Was just looking through the comments at The Blaze for the South Carolina KKK rally story — a whole lot of right wing raving going on. The KKK are DEMOCRATS, they’re funded by Soros, it’s a false flag operation, Nazis are liberal socialists, they’re RIGHT anyway, etc.

Lots of open racism, too.

Right but here’s the other thing that when you think about it is stupid. Christmas and New Years Day fall a week from each other. A week. I can’t think of two major holidays that are that close together. I frankly don’t care what someone says to me. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, even Happy Hanukkah even though I do not celebrate the latter not being Jewish.

Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah all occur within a three week period. “Chag Sameach!” (Happy Holidays!) is the appropriate greeting.

“The Confederate Flag is NOT a symbol of racism, it’s a symbol of Southern Heritage, and we’ll fight to the death to keep it! But if it IS a symbol of racism, it’s a DEMOCRAT symbol!”
