Gawker Is Imploding
I’ve never been a fan of Gawker’s style of tabloid sleaze and character assassination (and I’ve been one of their targets in the past, in a crappy dishonest attack by John Cook), so I’m having a difficult time feeling upset or sympathetic to them now. Today two of their top editors bailed out of the ship as it continues taking on water.
The issue tearing apart this group of bottom feeders: the decision to publish, then un-publish that absolutely disgusting hit piece on a private citizen. The editors are horrified that the people who pay their salaries have the final say in what’s published.
But in the end, it’s their own sleaziness that’s doing them in.
(Note: I’m not bashing some of the other sites run by Gawker media that actually do good work. For example: jezebel.com. But Gawker itself specializes in sliming people, and always has — like a web version of National Enquirer or Hustler with even fewer ethics.)
