Nasty Nativist Numbskull Donald Trump Now Has a Commanding Lead in the Polls

This is bad
Politics • Views: 63,084

Today the polls are showing that Donald Trump has a huge lead over the other GOP candidates — nearly double the numbers of the runner-up, Scott Walker.

The Donald Trump experience is revealing the deep racist and nativist roots of the conservative movement. The right wing voting base loves the mean-spirited xenophobic garbage on which Trump has based his campaign. Take a run around the right wing blogs and you’ll see thousands upon thousands of comments praising Trump and spewing vile racist hatred. It’s way beyond disgusting at this point; it’s disturbingly insane.

I’ve been writing about the rise of this right wing ugliness for years, and it’s obviously going to be one of the deciding factors in the next presidential election. Donald Trump’s popularity may wane, but nasty bigotry is now the face of the GOP — homophobic, racist, anti-women’s rights and fanatically religious to the point of advocating theocracy.

The Republican Tell Tale Heart

Answer a question for me, Republicans, how is what Trump said any different, any more outrageous, any more insulting or obnoxious, than the things you’ve been saying about your president? About your neighbors? About veterans like me?

You know who you people are?

You’re the ones who call black people “n*****s” when you think nobody but “real” Americans are listening.

And then, one day, your kid uses that word in front of a black man. And you’re all embarrassed and upset. Heh heh, Mr. Negro, Sir. I have no idea, no idea, where little Donny learned that word. Bad, Donny, bad! You apologize right now to this inferior thug before he rapes Mommy and robs a liquor store!

Donald Trump is the face of the modern Republican party.

Trump has been polling at the top of the GOP field and you’re just now figuring out what a douchebag he is? Well, that’s just plain hysterical.

It really does make me sick that the right wing base has degenerated this far, and I blame the media in part, for being so timid about calling them out when the racism started to surface in the Tea Party movement.

I’m more worried about those midterms that the Dems are going to need to build up their numbers in Congress, state legislatures, and governors. I am also thankful that the next census election is in a presidential year but also a little worried that if the president is Hillary or honestly any Democrat that the people will have “Dem fatigue” and vote GOP just because of that.

Indeed. Sure there’s been some push back on some of Trump’s comments but it’s been pretty timid. And why? Because Bush and the other establishment types know if they push too hard against Trump’s bigotry, they’re done for.

One caveat about this poll from the Washington Post:
“Support for Trump fell sharply on the one night that voters were surveyed following those [McCain] comments. Telephone interviewing for the poll began Thursday, and most calls were completed before the news about the remarks was widely reported.”

Hopefully the McCain comments might cause some of the GOP base to think twice about supporting such an undisciplined loose canon. But I doubt it. They love this jerk.

All the vitriol aimed at that Blah man in the White House was only directly insulting ~13% of the population. Now imagine all the insane vituperation aimed at “That c*** in the White House” for 4 years—that’s going to alienate >50% of the population; and more than that of the people who vote. Hillary may be our only chance of taking the House in a census year.

I think she’s wrong and this is a very optimistic view of Bush’s chances given the growth of the Latino portion of the electorate along with the other demographics the GOP has backslid with in the last four years. People just don’t know how to think anymore. Fundamentalist Christianity has a lot to do with it. The fantasies they have to weave, the mental gymnastics and denial they must engage in to maintain their belief system is remarkable. I have a good friend, decent, kind, honest, hard-working, fun-loving family man, and he admires men like Carson and Trump and that makes me physically ill. I literally hurt for him. He just can’t see. He wasn’t taught the critical thinking skills to see. He was taught a lifestyle, an attitude. He’s a good man but he could be an even better man if he wasn’t trapped by this ideology that makes him look up to hateful, willfully ignorant, lying con men like Trump and Carson. The scary thing is, if we have another bad economic crisis, Trump or someone like him could well become President, the way Hitler used the 30’s economic crisis to take Germany. And people like my friend will eagerly vote for him. Good people who can’t think.

It really does make me sick that the right wing base has degenerated this far, and I blame the media in part, for being so timid about calling them out when the racism started to surface in the Tea Party movement.

Yes Yes and Yes.

The media has played a part in all of this, which is the aspect I find most alarming. !!! Fourth Estate where are you? Please come to the rescue.

Right wing political populists with pitchforks playing in a hay field with a blow torch while eating hate sandwiches are not good for America.

Now hiring: Responsible media & citizens needed to call out this BS. Where is the leadership to help calm this nation down.

Democratic candidates might fare better if they didn’t run away from their president’s electoral accomplishments. They could try sounding like Democrats while they’re at it.

What pisses me off is so many of these Democrats got elected in part due to Obama’s coattails and they run away from him the second he becomes a little unpopular. Again I don’t expect a conservative Democrat in Kentucky like Allison Grimes to be in strong agreement with me on the issues but you know what, show some loyalty.

Yes, but really it applies to everyone. It’s the same reason conservatives will never get any traction aiming their insulting “liberal plantation” rhetoric at black people. Nobody likes being talked down to, ever. Nobody likes being told that they’re too stupid to recognize their own self interest, even if they demonstrably are acting against it like poor undermining their economic security by voting for the GOP. If we ever want to persuade people to our point of view it helps to take a step back and ask ourselves how we’d react to somebody saying the same shit to us. If we can’t formulate an argument that doesn’t come off as insulting upon reflection then it’s probably best to just shut the fuck up.

That’s interesting that you bring up Inherit the Wind. I saw the play for that when I was in 8th grade and the year of the 2000 election. I had some very religious (RCC) friends who attended parochial school at that time too and I saw how narrow minded their upbringing was and how in the play like real life that Bertram Gates aka John Scopes was actually prosecuted for teaching evolution. That bothered me. My parents aren’t really religious people but all four of my grandparents were at some point and I even had a great uncle who was an ordained priest but there was a lot that turned me off of religion. I tried re-embracing Catholicism in 2006-2007ish. Never went to Mass or anything like that but I subscribed to a lot of Catholicism’s tenets. Now I think the key in life is just to be a good person and if you’re religious, good for you, if you’re not hey that works too.

Mostly I’m just like if you want to be President show me that you can think on your goddamned feet. I’d probably be really annoyed initially at being interrupted by a bunch of protesters too, and that’s one of about ten thousand reasons why I’d make a shitty President. Reason number two is that I swear all the motherfucking time.

But the way I see it is if you’re going to run for office, and you’re going to speak at something called a “Town Hall” event, you might want to bone up on your extemporaneous speaking skills, and be prepared to deal with some unexpected shit, whether you like it or not. Sticking steadfastly to your prepared stump speech financial bullshit when people whose vote you fucking need are protesting institutional racism and extrajudicial murder might not be the most persuasive move you can make in that scenario.

So yeah, interrupting Bernie was rude, I don’t care. In the context of NN and townhall type events everywhere it should not have comes as anything close to a surprise. Show me you can adapt, show me you deserve to be in charge of US foreign policy, show me you aren’t the kind of person who is easily bamboozled by a group of legitimately pissed off black voters.

I was going to try and guess which 4 you were talking about, but I can’t get the number lower than six: Cruz, Walker, Carson, Perry, Huckabee and Jindal.

Assuming the six I have encompasses the four, which two of those do you consider less dangerous than Trump?

Perry and Jindal, simply because they have no chance at all. Bump Carson out as well, and replace him with Kasich.

Hillary showing up to NN would have been kinda like Jon Huntsman going to the Value Voters summit, very little upside. Hillary’s entire electoral strategy is built around not having to pivot very far to the left to get the nomination, so as to attack the GOP candidate as being an extremist out of touch with the vast majority of moderate voters. Hillary’s polling numbers also put her in a position where she doesn’t actually need to get yelled at right now for every real and imaginary disappointment she’s inflicted on progressive America. She has an enormous lead and she does not need to jeopardize it even if it would be super leadership-y for her to do so. You don’t have to like her to recognize what she’s doing is smart. Cynical maybe, but strategically intelligent.

To be honest, I do prefer Clinton or Biden. Sanders is only getting support from a specific portion of Democratic voters. Not only that but he seems to, in past burned bridges with alarming regularity.

Not only that, but I also know that while we need to move to the left, it must be gradual. Going too quickly could backfire.

I’m sure there is a way it can be done, but that was not going to be a receptive audience for her. She could have hit all the right notes on BLM and still gotten whacked over her awful Iraq War vote, ties to Wall Street and establishment candidate status.

Well, this is big news from China, via CNN.

One-time aide to China’s ex-president accused of corruption, report says

(CNN)Chinese authorities have arrested a former top official in a corruption investigation after expelling him from the ruling Communist Party, state-run Xinhua news agency reported Monday.

Party investigators have accused Ling Jihua, 58, once a top aide to former President Hu Jintao, of accepting huge bribes, illegally obtaining party and state secrets, as well as keeping mistresses and trading power for sex, Xinhua said.

Not mentioned in the article are the New York Times and Bloomberg investigations into the family finances of the former VP and Premier, Wen Jiabao. They uncovered billions in assets in Hong Kong and abroad, plus cushy corporate posts for Wen’s relatives. The Beijing government promptly blocked all access to both media sites. Wen is popular among the people, who call him “Grandpa Wen.”

Xi is cleaning house in the Party selectively, according to the experts. He’s going after officials who are not perceived as supporters of Xi, while being very careful not to nail officials who are more likely to be in his camp.

There’s no word yet whether Xi likes canoli.

“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”

Well I heard back from the man who contacted me on ancestry.com. Turns out my great grandmother had a super common name. We confirmed that she was in fact illegitimate. I also understand now why her name on her baptism certificate is different than the name she used upon emigrating and when she lived here. I also have some understanding of Slovak culture that I didn’t before. Had never heard of family nicknames before. Apparently it’s a way you can differentiate between families in case you ever visit your ancestor’s home village which is on my Bucket List. I also understand how my great grandfather despite being an Austro-Hungarian empire citizen was able go to Russia. No borders in those days apparently and apparently my G-Grandfather grew up in a village not even ten miles from the Polish borders. A kind of funny thing to think about since I presently live close to the West Virginia border and my brother lives close to the California one. Decided also to contact someone who I share a surname with in my DNA test results because I think one of his ancestors and mine were either first cousins or siblings possibly. I love this family history stuff.

Clinton’s campaign is burning through an eye-popping $230,000 per day in this stage of the campaign, and much of it is going toward making contact with voters more aggressively than is the norm so early on, whether it be through hiring field organizers with community ties, investing in the newest microtargeting technology or holding events like the one in Philadelphia.

The Clinton team is scouting for consultants in every state with a large Latino presence to develop localized strategies for boosting turnout. Buzz-stirring events like the Dreamers gathering Clinton held in Nevada in early May are conceived with input from local activists.

And I’m not all that great at finding stuff I’ve read, but she’s got people out in states like South Carolina already canvassing as well.

I don’t think the Democrats are taking it as lightly as everyone thinks. Sanders is doing a lot of campaigning himself. There should be a lot of good groundwork for whoever wins the nomination.

I’ve weirdly enough started to dislike Jefferson a little as I’ve gotten older. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate the Declaration, the Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom, etc but it is so frustrating for me to read “All men are created equal” and then to know that he was not merely a slave-owner but a brutal one and hypocritical one at that. I guess it would bother me less if the mythology about Jefferson the reluctant slave owner wasn’t so ingrained. I have a big problem with the deification of our Founding Fathers anyhow. I appreciate them- do not get me wrong but most of the people I truly appreciate in our country’s history are 20th century people who challenged the status quo the FF’s set up. Sorry ranting.

Exactly. When I was younger and obviously more idealistic, I would be upset when I saw imperfection in my heroes but the more older I get the more I try to see nuance. I think what it is with TJ though, I get frustrated with psuedo-historians like Beck or Barton that want us to ignore the bits on slavery. I even get wanting to say that slavery was part of the era but when they go out and lie and claim that Jefferson was a reluctant slave owner, I do get upset at that because it’s an outright historical lie. Weirdly enough though I’ve started to appreciate Hamilton more as I’ve gotten older.

It’s hard for me to do since I never lived in those times but that’s the measure I try to judge people on. I.E. why I can give Lincoln a little bit of a pass for not being exactly enlightened on race or understand why someone like Margaret Sanger and many other prominent people were drawn to the eugenics movement. On the flip side, it is why I cannot condone present right wing homophobia and bigotry.

I just love that movie. Might have to watch it again while it’s on demand at HBO (till the 27th). Just watched it last week, but hey.

I also did a Christopher Guest marathon the other day:

It really is pathetic. This is a man who lost relatives due to Nazism and that pathetic asshole Williamson thinks it’s okay to call him a national socialist. The reality is Sanders’ ideology is nothing like Hitler’s. Sanders isn’t a racist first of all and secondly the Nazis had a cozy relationship with big business and industry. Calling him a Stalinist as they have in the past is nonsense too but they do that because they know their readership thinks every self-described socialist must be like Stalin. Typical crap by a rag started by a McCarthy apologizing Jim Crow supporting unrepentant bigot in William F. Buckley.

Inside, they found more than 1,200 firearms — including handguns, rifles and shotguns — as well as more than 2 tons of ammunition. An LAPD bomb squad was sent to the home to determine that the search was safe to proceed.

They chummed the waters for years, thinking that the base would remain loyal to their candidates alone, and even attacked campaign finance laws under the assumption that more money would mean an even better chance to blow Democrats out of the water.

But all they’ve done is created a perfect storm for themselves: A self-financed candidate who has no loyalty to the party leadership, has nothing to lose by running, and actually stands to gain in celebrity status. For many in the GOP field, this might their only real shot at the White House. For Trump, it’s just something he’ll file on his taxes come 2017.

And to add to the nightmare of a Trump independent bid is the possibility that he could hurt them further down the ticket. That “strong” GOP bench is slowly turning into a three-man race, which in reality may be a two-man race if you believe Trump will crash & burn when the voting begins. Short of some major upsets come next spring & summer, it’s either going to be Jeb! or Walker carrying the GOP standard into the RNC.

re: #318 Targetpractice

And to add to the nightmare of a Trump independent bid is the possibility that he could hurt them further down the ticket. They couldn’t count on the bandwagon effect as much, couldn’t expect that candidates who’d had Bush/Walker stump for them would benefit from being associated with the guy at the top of the ticket. It might actually help third party candidates who can get Trump to stump for them.

I would add that Trump’s candidacy will also embolden even more insane and clownish candidates in the future. Although Trump will ultimately fail at his bid, this brief rise he is experiencing is going to make lowbrow candidates believe they have a shot.

I am sure that the spin will read that DT only has 24% of the vote while the “mainstream” GOP candidates have the remaining 76%. Don’t know how else they can rationalize these embarrassing developments.

I don’t know if anyone’s linked this already, but Salon did a great piece on how we’ve ended up with a Donald.

I can see this in politics over here in Europe, too. This could be the UK election, and many of the Scandinavian elections with far right wins.

From the linked article:

“Voters are basically lazy,” one Nixon media adviser wrote. “Reason requires a high degree of discipline, of concentration; impression is easier. Reason pushes the viewer back, it assaults him, it demands that he agree or disagree; impression can envelop him, invite him in, without making an intellectual demand…. When we argue with him, we… seek to engage his intellect…. The emotions are more easily roused, closer to the surface, more malleable….”

Great article. Democrats tend to be thinkers so our messaging reflects that and fails because we’re in the Dawn of Idiocracy.

So, it seems there is Discovery channel series called “Naked and Afraid,” kind of like “Man Meets Wild” but without clothes on, and with female companionship.

The naughty bits are blurred out, of course. This is American TV.

Discovery was blasting out promos this weekend for some extra-special version of Naked and Afraid where, instead of one couple, there would be 5 or 10 (didn’t pay attention). The funny thing is they bragged that it would be uncensored. Then, they showed clips of the upcoming show, with, as you can guess, the naughty bits blurred out.

And here is where it all started. As an 18 year old, John Kasich wrote Richard Nixon to see if he could get a meeting with Nixon at the White House. Nixon did meet with him (see photo below).

By the way, I’m watching all the Kasich coverage. I am already getting nauseous. I don’t know if I will be able to get to the 11:30 actual announcement.

They have just interviewed Steve Stivers, a local congressmen and he is saying Kasich will be the fresh face with experience at local, state and national levels. Stivers also is saying no one in the Republican party is taking Trump seriously as he is nothing but a side show. That is going to blow up in their faces. They better take him serious as he is seriously screwing up their run for president.

Adlai Stevenson is, to me, a model politician. He took the Democratic nomination in 1952 by acclaim: he did not run in a single primary. Ohhhh. Now they are interviewing a couple from Chicago here in Columbus to see “a winner!” The woman is saying Kasich is the only candidate that can bring everyone…conservatives, liberals, independents, evangelicals, atheists…together. Unlike some of the fakes (Trump).

There are the protesters outside the union too. They were across the street from the OSU student union but are now moved to the side of the building. Probably getting a little two loud.

Also, the Ohio Democratic Party leader is making a deal out of the fact that Kasich isn’t being forthcoming on who is going to be paying for all his campaign security especially when he is on the road and outside the state. The Dems are saying the Ohio taxpayers are paying and Kasich isn’t being truthful. A local state Rep (my area) is introducing a bill saying Ohio will not pay for Kasich security if it has anything to do with his campaign.

In other news, the LAPD finds a guy decomposing behind the wheel of his car in the street. Inside his house: 1,200 guns and tons of ammo.

Old, frightened, and probably watching “Doomsday Preppers” 24/7. Dies anyway.

More than 1,200 guns were strewn about the Palisades Drive house and garage, police said. The weapons ranged from high-end pistols to shotguns and rifles. Many had never been fired. Some were still wrapped in their boxes, with the price tags still attached.

It was a “staggering number of guns,” said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith. Police also found roughly two tons of ammunition.

The unusual discovery came as police investigated the death of the man, whose decomposing body was found in a car parked down the street from his home.

I propose an alternate headline: Sad & lonely teapartier substitutes GUNZ!! for family, friends. Dies, and nobody notices. Nor cares. Cops laugh at his corpse, take all the GUNZ!! away.

With a Hillary we still get some protection from the crazy RWNJs and the Fundies. And then there is the veto power against Congress, Supreme Court and Federal Judge selections…and so much more. “For us to get caught up in a controversy of well, ‘What did Donald Trump mean when he said that?’ — It just seems so petty to me,” Carson told reporters after speaking to a group of teenage Republicans in Arlington, Va.

Several Republican presidential contenders have said Trump should be disqualified from the presidential race for saying that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is not a war hero. Carson disagreed.

“I’m not sure from listening to what he said that he think that Mr. McCain is not a hero,” Carson said. “He has repeatedly said yes, he is a hero, so I don’t know where that comes from that he’s disqualified.”

MSNBC is showing Trump in South Carolina.

He does not appear to be a wounded animal. He’s is running on the controversy he created and is ripping Perry, Graham and it appears everyone that has bagged on him over the McCain remarks.

He is not going away any time soon.

He’ll be in it as long as he’s willing to keep spending his money.

How soon before the first WI soldier shoots themselves or others accidentally or on purpose? Because the reason that the military doesn’t want everyone armed on their bases is because most people in uniform aren’t qualified to shoot in these situations.

I ran into Nichelle’s son this morning. I don’t usually ask him about her, but when he asked me how I was doing, I thought the question was fair game. ‘I’m doing well, how’s your mom doing?’ He waggled a finger in the direction of my feet on the sidewalk, and said, ‘You’re a little ahead of her, but she’s on her feet!’

Good to hear. Looks like she’s back to work and everything! (She had a little stroke this spring.)
