How to Embarrass a White Supremacist (With a Tuba)

The funniest thing you’ll see this week

A musician in South Carolina hit on an absolutely hilarious way to mock the Confederate flag-carrying white supremacists on their way to the Capitol last weekend — by marching along with them, playing a tuba. (Technically, a sousaphone, the marching band version of a tuba.)

I haven’t laughed so hard in weeks.

Bravo!

“I didn’t really know how to show my opposition, so that was my way of doing it,” [musician Matt] Buck says.

Buck says he had attended a peaceful counterprotest earlier in the day on the north side of the Statehouse grounds, and he happened to be on the south side when he saw people waving the flag as they marched down the street.

“Nobody knew where they were; we just happened to see them,” Buck says. “Most of the crowd was at the Statehouse waiting for them, and I saw them coming out of a garage.”

When it comes to song selection, Buck says he started out with the tune that the character Stewie plays on Family Guy in an episode where he gets paid to follow obese people around with a tuba — which, incidentally, is similar to the bass line from the Primus song “The Air is Getting Slippery.” Then he switched over to Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries,” which he says he picked due to its use in the classic Nazi car chase scene from The Blues Brothers.

“A few people had a few things to say, but nobody really confronted me or anything,” Buck says. “My goal was to embarrass them, and I think I did a little bit.”

As far as I’m concerned this is the ONLY proper use of a tuba.

If I ever meet Matt Buck, the first round is on me. This is brilliantly hilarious. I thought he got inspiration from Family Guy. That was my first thought when I heard about this. Good man.

In the meantime, Santorum is continuing to embarrass all intelligent human beings:

And step-dads across the land will surely vote for him for saying this:

He added that government policies discourage women from marriage and instead boost cohabitation: “That’s the most dangerous place for children in America, it’s a mother and a child living with a man who is not the father of that child. We’re creating dangerous homes, we’re creating barriers to marriage and family formation all because of our welfare policies.”f

It’s pretty crazy to think that he was the runner up last time. This is a man who believes thinking every American should get some form of post secondary education is a form of snobbery. I’d be ashamed if this man was my father. I don’t think he’s stupid but he sure does act the part to get votes and support.

Guess what? They love them some Trump! They love his frank straight talk and one woman said he is a true catalyst.

Meanwhile suicide watch is on at the RNC headquarters. Reince Priebus is in straight jacket and they are padding his office.

Trump is merely a symptom. The real problem is the Trump supporters.

The GOP has diligently worked for decades to make voters who are receptive to its messages more stupid and malicious. It was inevitable that a demagogue like Trump would take advantage of this festering political carbuncle.

I said all along that with the swing voters who only come out for a presidential election, name recognition was the one and only issue. That’s why I said it would be Clinton/Bush. But now with Trump, I don’t know—he’s got at least as much name recognition as Bush. It could wind up Clinton/Trump. My fondest hope is that it winds up Clinton/Bush/Trump. Or maybe even Clinton/Walker (Who?)/Trump.

Especially so that these are family issues, not women’s issues alone. We don’t live in a vacuum. Some are married, others not…no matter, money, sick time off, sick kids…these are issues everyone faces (in one form or another).

More of this, for sure. Those are real economic issues that affect the whole country, not just half as the GOP likes to pretend.

If Trump succeeds in making himself the Mouth of the GOP Base and then runs third party, the result will be much worse for the GOP than Perot’s run in 1992. In fact, I’d view that as the start of the long-awaited civil war between GOP base and GOP establishment.

That isn’t a really distinct 3rd choice. Trump’s supporters are merely the swivel-eyed loons and morons who take GOP propaganda seriously.

That’s why it is going to be so very entertaining to see how the GOP establishment reacts if Trump’s polling remains high, especially if the first debate goes his way.

The establishment can’t really attack Trump without repudiating decades of their own propaganda.

That would be a delightful result, even if the Wall St. crowd simply responded by tightening their already-strong grip on the Democratic party.

IMO the wingnut movement needs to have its political power broken once and for all in order for US politics to get back to any semblance of normalcy. Splitting off the moderate enablers of wingnut derp is one of the few plausible ways for this to happen.

re: #31 SteveMcGaziBolaGate

I actually worked for one of the companies involved. It was complicated. But I’ll try to make it simple:

Westinghouse owned channel 3, which was an NBC affiliate. CBS owned channel 10, which was obviously a CBS station.

Westinghouse bought CBS. The rules at the time said you could only own one station per market, so the combined Westinghouse/CBS had to sell either channel 3 or channel 10. It decided to sell channel 10, which became the NBC station, and of course channel 3 then became the CBS station.

It was much more complicated in Miami, where CBS and NBC swapped licenses and channels but not “intellectual property” (basically, the local news team) and in Denver and Baltimore, where all three networks moved.

Sorry you asked yet?

And I still get fleeting thoughts asking “is he doing this on purpose?”

And by purpose I mean showing up the party to point out the problems. Not so much for his own thing as everyone (including me) thinks, but to slap the Grand Old Party upside its grand old face.

I don’t know enough about Trump to know if he could even have true motives and the creativity to pull this off as purely a political demonstration intended to foist change.

But damn this is just incredible to watch. It’s better than any political movie I have seen so far.

Hmm. Anyone know if he has crews following him around everywhere at all times recording this all for some future movie/TV project?

I could do this all night.

Highly overrated political pundit Alouette has the mind of a very dumb and backward child. Average talent who is out of touch with reality. Get smart!

This is pretty much why I think Trump will do well in the first GOP primary debate. All he has to do is call out the other candidates as RINOs as insultingly as possible. Nobody is pure enough to be invulnerable to that line of attack.

Since idiots in the GOP base are well-trained in the art of believing what they want to believe, factually correct counter-attacks to the effect that Trump is not an orthodox wingnut may be irrelevant, if the base likes Trump’s bombast enough.

Today’s TBI suggestion:

Craniosacral therapy. Suggested by a nice woman who told me in her German accent that she had polio as a youngster, also several bumps on the head. She was nice, but what do I do? Look it up on the internet:

Craniosacral therapists make big promises, but their methods have failed to pass every fair scientific test of efficacy or plausibility

I have four more weeks of PT. After that I’ll find something to do that’s not trashed on the first hit from google.

Ummm hang on. Barbara Boxer is ok with Social Security cuts to offset the highway funds? Oh hell no. We pay state and federal gas taxes for highways. We all pay a big % of our pay into SS. Self employed especially, although one could argue the employer contribution portion would be in the payroll if not in the tax.

Another $2.3 billion offset, would revise the Social Security Act to limit benefits given to so-called “fugitives” who have outstanding warrants for their arrest. It would include a safeguard allowing the Social Security commissioner to dole out payments to individuals for “good cause.”

Boxer, the ranking member on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, mentioned earlier Tuesday that some of the money would come from those Social Security cuts. She also noted another measure that would prevent Social Security Disability Insurance recipients from simultaneously collecting unemployment insurance.

Good evening Lizards. Looking at photos after today’s running around.

Saw the USMC Museum at Quantico yesterday and also stopped at a small local Civil War battlefield park at Bristoe Station - this included a 2 mile hike.

Today was doing the whirlwind run of battlefields; The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, and Chancellorsville. Got rained on at the last one, so few pictures and mainly driving tour at that point. Did about 3-4 miles of hiking between the first two. Pictures are location (mainly eroded earthworks) oriented. Plus some of insects, mushrooms, and the marker for Stonewall Jackson’s arm.*

* - It was interred at a farm a mile or so from where it was taken off. The farm was owned by a relation of Jackson’s chaplain. That farm, in turn, was used as a corps HQ during the battle of the Wilderness, thus the NPS’ interest in having the building and land there.

They showed some of the dash-cam video of Sandra Bland being pulled over. After starting the ticket and asking her to put out her cigarette, he tells her to step out of the car. When she challenges him on that, asking for what reason she had to get out of the car, his voice got louder, telling her to get out and that she had to. She finally got out when he ducked inside the car himself.

A question for any lawyers: Was she correct in questioning why he wanted her out, and refusing to get out? I have heard she was correct. For the non-lawyer types, I know that you’d most likely follow what he said - which, btw, would generally lead to your car being searched - but I want to know the legal side.

Wikipedia:

A notable 21st-century conspiracy theory regards the Frankfurt School as the origin of a contemporary movement in the political left to subvert traditional western cultural norms, referred to as “Cultural Marxism” by theory proponents. It advocates the idea that multiculturalism and political correctness are products of critical theory, which originated with the Frankfurt School. The theory is associated with American conservative thinkers such as William Lind, Pat Buchanan and Paul Weyrich, and has received institutional support from the Free Congress Foundation.[51][52]

The Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik also contributed to the popularisation of the term by including it in his self-authored document “2083: A European Declaration of Independence”, which along with the Free Congress Foundation’s “Political Correctness: A Short History of an Ideology” was e-mailed to 1,003 addresses about 90 minutes before the 2011 bomb blast in Oslo for which Breivik was responsible.[53][54][55]

Here’s what I love about Donald Trump - he embodies everything that the GOP has taken great pains to make a part of the national dialog - xenophobic bigotry, homophobia, jingoistic militarism, economic fatalism - and he plays it all unfiltered so even a twelve year old understands that Republicans are as a whole not to be trusted with the keys to the car…not in their current state.

It took the GOP nearly fifteen years (from the beginning of Bush 43’s first term) to establish this reputation and they’re not going to be able to make it go away before next November, so they are stuck in a position where they have to court the most uneducated, gullible, bigoted people in their base…because that’s all they have.

Possibly this amanita variety? I’m no expert but I do a love a good mushroom pizza or pasta sauce.

Definitely appears to be an amanita species of some sort. Which is pretty much in the “leave alone” category. Also saw a few death caps, but failed to take a picture of them.

It’s going OK, thanks. The PT deals with the dizziness by making me strong enough to catch myself when I lose my balance. The vision thing seems to be getting better, but extremely slowly.

I used to swim a lot as a kid, but hardly ever since then. I might take it up again, but the public pools in this town leave much to be desired. That’s what I get for living in the desert, I suppose.

I assume the PT folks are giving you exercises that you can do at home once the therapy sessions run out. Sounds like you are able to get a little work in again, which should help with both gross and fine motor.

The vision thing must be very frustrating. I’ve got some problems with my eyes that they can’t do much about, and frankly it drives me a bit crazy. Some days I’m just exhausted from the strain of try to see.

The good news is that brains are fairly plastic and if you are seeing even slow improvement that’s encouraging.

Please know you’ve got lots of lizard love focused toward your recovery!

I think there is a variety in Japan that is sort of edible, and there was a case a few years ago where some Japanese immigrants foraged for them in the wild, got one of the deadly varieties, and a lot of people died.

Yeah, I just looked them up and read up on them. It is advisable to totally stay away from eating them just to be safe.

Fourth person dies in California of mushroom poisoning

Fall begins the season for highly sought-after wild chanterelle mushrooms in Northern California, and for the amanita species of mushroom that include what are known as “death cap” and “death angel” varieties.

Mushroom experts said that young poisonous North American amanitas found in the San Francisco Bay Area can often look like an edible version of a wild mushroom popular in Asia.

You’re right in my neck of the woods. I, on the other hand, was in the commuting hell of Chantilly. The Chancellor Battlefield’s got some nice trails and a big milkweed meadow that’s kinda cool.

A good eye always helps. You can spend thousands on good gear, but if you don’t have a good eye, all that tech doesn’t count for anything.

I’m somewhere in the middle - get some good shots, need to work on technique, and still work on my own style. Still find way too many shots are over/underexposed for the situation (I usually shoot Av or Tv except for the long duration shots). But I have a great friend who doesn’t have a DSLR and takes incredible shots who thinks I take awesome photos - so it’s all in the eye of the beholder and I’m my own toughest critic.

Thing is that I really haven’t been in the mood to shoot for a while. Just can’t get motivated, even though I’ve been to some good locations.

Lo and behold! If you use a camera viewfinder (or take the picture) the backing wall is the famous image of landing craft going in with Mount Suribachi in the background.

And about 15’ from that display is this particular item:

In other words, I think it’s safe to say they do not actually have any video of anything more “incriminating” than getting some women connected with PP to talk about stuff that sounds “icky” and then asking them editing the hell out of talk about reimbursement to portray it as “haggling.”

I guess breasts wouldn’t matter since Obama is Teh Ghey anyway.

I remember a story from infamous Nirther and Whirled Nut Daily poster Joseph Farrah that accused Obama of having a secret homosexual marriage before he married Michelle.

Trump rumor: The Koch brothers are working with Trump to destroy Jeb Bush, clearing the way for their tool, Scott Walker.

One possible piece of evidence: Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowksi, is a New Hampshire-based veteran of the Koch brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity.

Well that’s not working out well. Trump makes Bush look (by inevitable comparison) great.

5,000 naked anti-gay protesters to greet President Obama in Kenya

The anti-gay party plans to supplement its numbers to reach “5,000 totally naked men and women” by teaming up with volunteer sex workers, who are afraid they will lose work if homosexuality is legalized in Kenya.

And THIS is a convincing argument for anti-gay legislation? , I.e., “think of the job creators”?? No wonder Republicans love them…

The ammosexual equivalent of the Playboy mansion in its hedonistic heyday:

More Than 1,200 Guns, 2 Tons of Ammo Found at Upscale SoCal Home

The unnamed owner will not face charges since he is in fact already dead and the arsenal may be legal anyway.

More than 1,200 guns and an estimated two tons of ammunition were discovered at the upscale Southern California home of a man who was found dead inside an SUV last week, according to police.
Officers received a report around 5 p.m. Friday about the discovery of the body in the 1700 block of Palisades Drive in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.

After learning that the man lived on the same street, detectives with the LAPD’s elite Robbery-Homicide Division served a search warrant at the home and found a arsenal of handguns, shotguns, rifles and ammunition, police said.

Feline Fearless Leader  Jul 21, 2015 • 6:18:44pm

On the walk at Bristoe Station yesterday I did a mile loop with just the telephoto lens - so it was bird pictures instead of insects and flowers. I attempted a few flower or insect pictures at 12-15’ foot range and did get some decent results. (Nothing like the butterfly pictures I got with macro setting on the standard lens today though.)

Thought I’d post a few of the results. First is the second of two pictures of a mockingbird on a trail sign at a range of about 50m. I didn’t get closer shots as a second mockingbird arrived and proceeded to chase the first across the field. Oh well.

One of the standard bird identification/photo tropes is that they sit where the light is wrong and you get silhouette pictures. (Including a joker reference in a “fake” bird identification book to an all-black “silhouette warbler”.)

So I got a song sparrow in a clear position for a fairly close range shot — and, of course, it was in a silhouette lighting position. Following three are the original shot, an edited version where I cropped and adjusted luminosity a bit, and a third where I cropped and then used the luminosity a bit too much - but got what I think is an interesting and stark sort of black-white effect.

Full shot of a singing sparrow
Cropped, and slightly edited
Cropped, and overdone lighting effect

I liked this line from the diary:

Your desire to protect politicians is being placed above the state of Emergency that is Black Life in America.

It’s what people need to get over. The candidates themselves will either learn or they shouldn’t be president. When Americans are in trouble, as blacks are, they need to hear that there will be solutions.
