I read somewhere that sharks kill ~100 people a year, worldwide—very few in First World countries of course. Meanwhile, humans kill on the order of 100 million sharks. I think we’re winning, so I can’t get too excited about it.

“Judicial Activism”: When a judge disagrees with me.
“Strict Constructionism”, when a judge agrees with me.
Twas true in the Warren Court days and it’s even more true now. Justice Kennedy used the 14th amendment and the Loving Decision to reach his decision on SSM. Cruz doesn’t like that so he’s whining about “judicial activism” when there is none there. If anyone acted like a “judicial activist”, it was Roberts and the other three clowns.

Hillary can win without Virginia and Iowa. Losing Colorado would be sad, but I think she can win the state.

Definitely interesting but I’d like to see more polls. I for one am highly skeptical that Va voters like Huckabee that much.

It depends who the GOP candidate is. Florida would be tough with Bush or Rubio on the ticket. Ohio I think she’d do well in. I actually expect her to do better in rust belt states than Obama has. I don’t see her winning any states that Obama did not but I wouldn’t be shocked if she did better some places albeit while doing worse in others.

It is early too. Granted the voters are more familiar with Clinton than they were with Obama at this time but I really think the GOP candidate has a tough road ahead of him. There’s a lot of states that need to be flipped back to the GOP column and remember even against Gore/Kerry who I think weren’t as strong candidates as Hillary would be, Bush only beat them by one state.

No, I was thinking that she does better with white blue collar voters than Obama has throughout their political careers. My grandparents (Pennsylvanians through and through) loved her while they were more cold towards Obama.

I actually would almost be tempted to have a national referendum on same sex marriage just to show these people how wrong they are but I really don’t feel civil rights should be up for a vote and if they lost that referendum, you’d know they would still be bitching. The court made its decision on SSM. They lost. They need to deal with the fact that gays can marry everywhere in this country now.

I’ll add another thing about Hillary but she’s always been pretty popular with Hispanics too and also African-Americans. The African-American community and a lot of people don’t mention this were actually divided on her and Obama for a lot of the 2008 campaign. Hillary’s problems aren’t with ethnics or blue collar Dems, they’re more with white liberals.

Yes it is one poll. I looked at the demographics of the polls and republican vs democratic respondents have jumped fairly significantly in these latest poll. Not claiming they are skewed or anything, but it is just one poll.

Also, to me it seems Quinnapiac has, of late, had a fairly consistent R bias.

We will see.

Ultimately, civil rights are always determined by a vote, one way or another. Marriage equality was settled (for now) by a 5-4 vote of the supreme court justices.

A popular vote is usually worse than judicial decisions for protecting civil rights, but a RWNJ supreme court would be worse than anything. If we add one more RWNJ justice to the existing wingnut block, every SCOTUS decision since Brown that expanded civil rights would be likely to be overturned, and Brown itself might come under attack.

Yeah, should have said popular vote. I agree with you. One other RWNJ justice on the court would be disastrous. We’ve already seen the gutting of the VRA under Roberts and if they got another judge, I can’t even imagine.

Was Video of Sandra Bland’s Traffic Stop Edited? Texas Authorities Respond.

I wrote a couple emails but really curious to see what chain of evidence features come in police cameras. Taser and a couple other makers. No response yet but its not been long. I would think they do something to keep it verifiable, ala RAW files from still cams.

EDIT-The email
To Whom it may concern,

I’m writing an article about the differences if any between commercial/consumer digital video and law enforcement video from uniform or dash cams. Specifically, what measures or design features ensure there has been no manipulation or other actions that could impact the quality of evidence the video offers. Frankly I suspect public worries are overblown, but I’d like you to help me set the record straight.

Thanks in advance,

Daniel Ballard

re: #37 The Vicious Babushka

Of note, the propagandists who brought these videos may have themselves broken the law by illegally taping people without their consent (in CA).

MSNBC’s Irin Carmon reports that it’s unclear whether the Center for Medical Progress’ video stings were legal in the first place. They were recorded in California, where state law requires all parties to consent to a recording — but the Planned Parenthood employees were unaware that they were being filmed, and didn’t realize they were speaking with abortion opponents posing as buyers from a biological company.

Planned Parenthood’s legal counsel agrees, suggesting in their letter to Congress that activists like Daleiden have been illegally filming inside their clinics for years. The letter also notes that Daleiden may have gained access to clinics by using a falsified California driver’s license.

On Monday, a statement on the Center for Medical Progress website said the group “follows all applicable laws in the course of our investigative journalism work.”

Pardon me while I stifle a laugh at that last bit.

I think a lot depends on the state of the economy, how she campaigns, and I think having a good pick for VP would help too. As I said, I think the R’s have a lot of work to do. Their last two presidential wins were decided by two states and Florida as we know had a ton of controversy in it in 2000. So thus the question I have is what states can these Republican candidates win that W Bush did not.

But we’re supposed to believe that this is the true copy?

It will never be proven legally, any more than the election fraud in Ohio that gave Bush the 2004 election will be proven legally—or the election fraud in Ohio in 2012 that Karl Rove was so sure of that he went apeshit on the air when it didn’t work will be proven legally. I remember this:

“I think that since we now know Sen. (John) McCain will be the nominee for the Republican Party, national security will be front and center in this election. We all know that. And I think it’s imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold,” the New York senator told reporters crowded into an infant’s bedroom-sized hotel conference room in Washington.

“I believe that I’ve done that. Certainly, Sen. McCain has done that and you’ll have to ask Sen. Obama with respect to his candidacy,” she said.

Calling McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee a good friend and a “distinguished man with a great history of service to our country,” Clinton said, “Both of us will be on that stage having crossed that threshold. That is a critical criterion for the next Democratic nominee to deal with.”

Nothing like endorsing the Republican over your Democratic opponent.

That was an actual discussion that dealt with substantive issues and kept people interested. I don’t know if I’d go so far as to compare them with the Lincoln-Douglas debates, but they contributed something to the contest, I think—would have even if the nomination had gone the other way.

Greetings from the De Young museum. “Ukraina” is a common noun meaning “border region,” so it was called “the Ukraine” to represent a specific one (as I say “the bay” to mean the one I live near). When it became an independent nation, they didn’t want the article used in naming it.

Yeah “The Hague” is one I’ve never gotten either and since you brought up the Netherlands. I’ve never understood why we use “Holland” when talking about the country since Holland is just a region. It would be if people talked about the US and said “The East” or if they talked about the Irish Republic and said “Connemara” to refer to the whole nation. Way OT, but I’m wondering if any Lizards out there know of any decent, low-cost (preferably free) parental control software to manage the times my son able to log into his computer running Windows 8.1.

What I’m trying to do is allow him a 2 hour block of time on the PC, then force him to log off and take a break for two hours before letting him log back on. I’ve tried using the built-in parental controls in Windows but it doesn’t seem to work properly; I’m guessing the on/off/on/off schedule is confusing it.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, but Russian has no definite article either. I don’t know what “The Hague” means (s’Gravenhage), but I know in Dutch (and English) it requires a definite article—some place names just do.

I guess I’ve been fatigued into compliance on The Lebanon and The Gambia, but on The Sudan and the Ukraine (and the calculus) I dig in my heels.

The University of Pittsburgh. Back 10 years ago when I was with UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), there was a big branding push to start referring to it on everything as “The UPMC”. It kinda fell by the wayside after a year or two.

You do see older US politicians now and then say “Czechoslovakia” instead of Czech Republic and Slovakia. I can actually forgive that a little bit since for many people that is all they knew. Now as the resident Slovene/Slovak, I am always happy to reply that they are two different countries with two different cultures, histories, and geographies. It is pretty funny how my grandfather, a son of Slovene immigrants married my grandmother, a daughter of Slovak immigrants.

Because people either don’t know or don’t give a shit about how actual science and scientific research work. And our Stupid Media isn’t helping by entertaining this horseshit instead of having actual OB/GYN specialists and scientists on the TV to explain to people what the hell is true and what isn’t.

Reading some of the comments regarding FOX people like Ailes and Hannity helping Trump along makes me wonder what happens after all the campaigning is over. Are relationships going to be the same or is there going to be some butthurt?

I’m thinking that since FOX is GOP central, all will be forgiven which will be another indicator that none of this stuff is anything but political games and these idiots will use each other for any gains even if they have to hold their noses when in each other’s company.

Slime…all of them.

And do you also, wear a watch while carrying your time-telling phone? I do, and I noticed a customer of mine doing it too.

Yep. It’s kinda funny, they managed to reduce the size of a phone to be convenient, but then reversed course and started making them larger in order to support multimedia. I must be a dinosaur.

I’d already gone off in search of her after you mentioned her name and was watching some of her performances on YouTube.

Amazing woman, tragic story.

Hmm..who to vote for. The guy with the cleaver, or the guy with the chainsaw. Maybe the Billionaire bigot or the frothy one. SO many to choose from!!

Yes he was. Someone did a pseudo-biographical movie on her, IIRC.
