The only two things I can figure is either there’s a straight shot past the liquor store that we can’t see because the Camaro is blocking our view, or it came in from the left, hopped that grassy verge, and spun around after it landed on the Subaru.

Maybe. You have to take into consideration his ability to convince investors to put up their (and others) money even after four failed casinos. Ignoring or discounting his business experience and negotiating skills is not wise. The man might appear to be a buffoon, but I lay you odds he is a very sharp negotiator and will be a formidable debate opponent.
That said, I still want him to run as a 3rd party candidate.

I honestly think Trump could hold his own in the debates because, as noted, he’s got years of TV experience and thus knows how to best read from a script to get the most bang. The rest of the field will come off as wooden and insincere, with the possible exception of Havana Ted, who will just come off sounding like the professional asshole he is. But Trump not only has years more experience being an asshole, he’s also got Ted beat when it comes to being a turd in the GOP punch bowl.
Now, can Trump win primary votes? I seriously doubt it, I think he’s gonna be gone before Super Tuesday. That said, I don’t rule out a third party run, because I think the man is so much of a glory hound that he’ll see running as a third party candidate as his way to keep the cameras focused on him.

It’ll will probably be extremely sacrilegious to say it, but I’ve never been a big fan of either Bruce or Jon…but if I had to choose one I’d go with Springsteen. His music has more earthy roots and I like his voice more. Bon Jovi is too much a pretty boy and I really don’t think he has the voice Springsteen has. Springsteen is also a better songwriter.
And when history is written…Springsteen will be in the books as an American traditionalist.

All Trump has done is take what much of the Republican base thinks and blurted it out.
The question for me still is: does he really mean it or is he messing with everyone?
Trump has said he liked Clinton as his favorite president in his lifetime. At one time Trump was a Democrat. So, I think it is still hard to pin down what Trump would really be about.
He really hasn’t gotten around to actual policy talk, just bombast. So, is he a moderate socially and a conservative monetarily? Maybe someday when he chills out a bit he might actually say. But I’m not holding my breath…just enjoying the show for now.

Agreed. I like Foo Fighters (and especially Grohl) much more but Nirvana was a unique creation almost solely defined by the state of Cobain’s mental health.
Grohl is a classic pop song writer - look at Learning to Fly or Times Like These - pure gems but no one will get from them the same shock that they got the first time they hear the lead riff of Smells Like Teen Spirit putting a stake in the heart of the hair metal era.

Attacking the victim of excessive force seems to be the norm for police departments across the country. This cannot stand.
The body count left in the wake of officers engaging in abusive actions keeps growing, and yet politicians are loath to do anything about it.
Here in NYC, there was a lot of fretting about how ending stop and frisk would result in a massive increase in crime. Well, the NYPD reported today that crime is down 6% from last year. Not exactly an increase. Better policing matters.
As does weeding out abusive cops from departments across the country. The NYPD does a better job addressing corruption than it does abusive cops. Since 2009, 5% of cops result in 40% of resisting arrest claims. 15% of cops bring 75% of the resisting arrest cases.
Then there’s the records that the NYPD and CCRB have put together regarding complaints - and that the NYPD so far has done little to use that data to retrain or fire bad cops.
CCRB Records show that 40 percent of the 35,000 officers on the force today have never been the subject of a citizen complaint. Another 20 percent have only one. Yet about a thousand cops have 10 or more complaints. One has been able to rack up 51. The name of that officer is confidential, as are the names of any officer who is the target of a CCRB complaint.
“If an officer has a pattern of a lot of complaints, let alone substantiated complaints, that officer is certainly worth watching and even warning and certainly retraining,” Emery said.
Yet — at least until now — the department hasn’t seemed too interested in using the board’s trove of records to spot problem officers.
“They’ve had access to it but they never asked,” Emery said. “The problem is (that) in the past, the New York City Police Department has not viewed the CCRB as anything but an irritant.”
There’s a longstanding trend that indicates that the resisting arrest charges have been used as a cover for police malfeasance - the officer had to use force because the person resisted arrest, when the reality is that the officer escalated with force, and then had to cover their actions with a charge.
The proof of all this is that so few resisting arrest charges are sustained, particularly in NYC where there are more than 10,000 resisting arrest charges brought annually.
What is also clear is that, at least in New York City, more than half of arrests for resisting arrest routinely end up dismissed in court. Fifty-two percent of more than 4,400 cases resolved last year were dropped. Just eight arrests ended in convictions.
It’s possible that many of the charges were dropped in exchange for convictions/deals on other charges, or reductions to lesser penalties.
But if so many of these charges are being brought by such a small percentage of cops, the public deserves to know what about these particular cops is resulting in the abundance of resisting arrest charges. Is it bad training or bad actors.
I highly suspect the latter - that these officers think that they are entitled to act however they see fit, and are therefore engaging in actions that escalate to potential violence and/or result in an arrest where a ticket or warning would have otherwise sufficed.

If a police officer continually gets away with being abusive or over-reacting with no pushback (or at least pushback in official channels) there is no reason for that behavior to not become habitual. And I expect things can easily escalate to rage when they come up against someone not “respecting their authority”.

There are tickets to 8 games that I am splitting with others and there are a total of 4 people in the group (including me), HOWEVER, one of the people only wants 1 game. Therefore I am taking the extra game.
Person 1: 3 games
Person 2: 2 games
Person 3: 2 games
Person 4: 1 game
Naturally if everyone wanted 2 games, I would put all 4 names in a hat and pick the draft order then we would pick games according to that.
But with the odd distribution of game “shares” it makes that a little more difficult.
A logical solution is to put each persons name in the hat for each “share” they have and pull the order that way.
Is that the most fair way of doing it?

I think it depends on how much a super-cop the individual officer is.
I know in Columbus, the Ohio State University police are a pretty big squad because the campus physical size and student/teacher/staff population is the size of a small city (80,000+ I would guess). And they also patrol certain parts of the city that surround the campus because it all ties together. So I would bet the OSU police would stop you for a license plate infraction…like expired plates.
See which friends will go to the preseason games. They’ll deserve first pick.

Modern Whig Party - proponents of campaign finance reform, as well as stringent financial disclosure for candidates which would limit the amount of money spent on a campaign, and elimination of “soft” money - I think it’s safe to say they’re out.
Reform Party - hard to guess on this one because keep in mind that they have had both Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan as their Presidential nominee.
There’s a slew of left-wing parties that embrace elements of socialism in some form or fashion, so all of those can be safely excluded.
Past those, there’s only the fringe groups left like the Independent American Party (neo-Confederacy), American Freedom Party (formely Third Position - white nationalist fascism), and an assortment of Dominionist religious parties.

I have a general question. Are we becoming jaded to all the police shootings?
I posted about another sad shooting of another unarmed black man in #127 above.
I am a bit surprised there has been no discussion or mention of it other than Higgs Boson’s Mate.
Is it because there isn’t video that brings it all into question? Does it need to become a national story for everyone to care.
The reason I ask is as a bit of a social study. I have a feeling that many incidents like the one that happened in Cincinnati might go on and we never hear about them. Yet each one involves a death, probably needlessly.
How many families bury a person totally without the larger part of society caring and how do they feel when another similar incident makes national news and people all over turn it into a big thing and there are demonstrations and national figures attending the funereal?
It just seems sad to me that one may get attention and another just happens and the sun comes up another day.
And it is not just about the Cincinnati shooting I posted. Just think of other Freddy Grays (Baltimore Police rough up in van case) or Walter Scotts (North Charleston SC guy who fled from his car and was shot and killed) that happen every day in this country we may not hear about.
To me those cases are just as tragic and need the same attention but may never get it. And yes, the families who have to deal with the deaths all the same.
I don’t know how I would handle it if it did happen to someone I know. A life gone over a tug of war that started with a missing license plate. Damn. And America in general has this feeling that all lives matter. I wonder how true that really is.

They’ve done amazing work and I hope what I said doesn’t take away from that. But I think we need more action. He’s going to ride this wave into the first GOP debate, where he will crash and burn. His bombastic “tough guy” routine works fine when he’s solo. But, things will be different when going up against “professional” politicians. Say what you will about the pro-pols, but they get actually training to hone their debate skills and have years, and in some cases decades, of experience. I think the pro pols will have a coordinated effort to make Trump look stupid, and his ego it too large not to take the bait. I worry that all of our politicians are way too hesitant to go after police issues. The police are historically protective of their own and very insular. They can get nasty. They can cause all kinds of political destruction.

Then the politicians might grow strong enough to go to work on policing. In other words, when it means votes and keeping their jobs, it will be important.
And I hope no one thought I was chiding the LGF members for not responding to #127. As I said I wanted to ask the questions I did because the folks around here are a good gauge of how sensible folks are feeling about this happening too much.

I have a general question. Are we becoming jaded to all the police shootings?
I posted about another sad shooting of another unarmed black man in #127 above.
I am a bit surprised there has been no discussion or mention of it other than Higgs Boson’s Mate.
Is it because there isn’t video that brings it all into question? Does it need to become a national story for everyone to care.
The reason I ask is as a bit of a social study. I have a feeling that many incidents like the one that happened in Cincinnati might go on and we never hear about them. Yet each one involves a death, probably needlessly.
How many families bury a person totally without the larger part of society caring and how do they feel when another similar incident makes national news and people all over turn it into a big thing and there are demonstrations and national figures attending the funereal?
It just seems sad to me that one may get attention and another just happens and the sun comes up another day.
And it is not just about the Cincinnati shooting I posted. Just think of other Freddy Grays (Baltimore Police rough up in van case) or Walter Scotts (North Charleston SC guy who fled from his car and was shot and killed) that happen every day in this country we may not hear about.
To me those cases are just as tragic and need the same attention but may never get it. And yes, the families who have to deal with the deaths all the same.
I don’t know how I would handle it if it did happen to someone I know. A life gone over a tug of war that started with a missing license plate. Damn. And America in general has this feeling that all lives matter. I wonder how true that really is.

I’m annoyed with the media. The only ones who seem to be covering the attack in Suruc are European news outlets, and even then they’re all about the carnage & the jihadi. Not much at all about the victims—no smiling photos, bios, stories about promising futures stolen, etc. All the usual poignantly humanizing stuff is missing, y’know? It’s like they’re just faceless corpses.
Maybe I’m just being too touchy about it. I’d better get back to work…

If the media were to address the human cost of what the terrorists were doing (particularly in the effected regions), it would become less desirable to many disaffected youth who may turn to AQ/ISIS and the like. Then there’d be fewer explosions and BREAKING headlines.

The reaction of the Turkish media is schizoid. Pro-government press is covering it, but oh-so-gently. Media that’s critical of the current government is heavily emphasizing the ISIS factor.
The Turkish government itself doesn’t seem to know how to approach this; they’ve employed what a writer at Today’s Zaman called a “live and let live” approach to Da’esh thus far, and the Suruc attack - and no doubt, today’s events which led to the death of a Turkish non-commissioned officer - is likely leading to a rather dramatic rethink of that strategy. Of course, for the AKP, it’s also a risky strategy, as a good deal of their base is strongly Islamist, especially in the more rural areas of Turkey, and going out there and, let’s say, bombing the ever-loving shit out of Da’esh would most likely create a very serious anti-AKP backlash from their own supporters.
I believe a Dr. Victor Frankenstein (or was that Frankensteen?) once faced a rather similar dilemma.

And it allows for sanctions to be reinstituted on violation and the Russians and Chinese relinquished their right to veto that at the USSC, which is a big deal. So, if there is a violation and there’s proof, sanctions resume, and Russia and China can’t block it.

I worry that all of our politicians are way too hesitant to go after police issues. The police are historically protective of their own and very insular. They can get nasty. They can cause all kinds of political destruction.
Probably the only way this will get fixed is if it gets to be explosive enough and a good size majority of the US citizens are just outraged and want change. Then the politicians might grow strong enough to go to work on policing. In other words, when it means votes and keeping their jobs, it will be important.
And I hope no one thought I was chiding the LGF members for not responding to #127. As I said I wanted to ask the questions I did because the folks around here are a good gauge of how sensible folks are feeling about this happening too much.
This sensible folk feels that, first off, most people (in the real world) just don’t give a shit unless it affects them.
People try to put their faith in police, the Officer Friendly of my youth, but that faith is too often misplaced.
And too many people, myself included, feel that we are completely powerless. It’s not like politicians listen to us. News people don’t give a shit about us (unless it brings ratings). Police don’t give a shit about us (generally. I hate saying this because there are good cops, but way too many not good ones.) Police have way too much power and, too often, way too much of an I Am Your Authority complex.
I don’t know what the average person does to remedy this atrocity of killing citizens.

Well Kerry was a Senator and thus is probably knowledgeable about the tactics of hearings. He might have given the others some advice. Or it’s simply that they are familiar with the kangaroo hearing tactics from other places and know that patience is the best response since besides sound bites the questioning is hoping to trigger a blow-up. Thus the lack of courtesy and a fair time to respond since the goal of the hearing is not to learn any facts or useful information.
