Nancy Pelosi Calls for Investigation of the Groups Targeting Planned Parenthood

Fighting back against the lies
Politics • Views: 59,416

Finally, Democrats are pushing back against the evil lies about Planned Parenthood being spread by right wing groups like Operation Rescue and the Orwellian “Center for Medical Progress:” Pelosi Urges DOJ Probe Into Group Targeting Planned Parenthood.

“Let’s have an investigation of those people who were trying to ensnare Planned Parenthood in a controversy that doesn’t exist,” Pelosi said Thursday in her first public remarks about Planned Parenthood since the first undercover video surfaced last week.

[…]

“Planned Parenthood has said that they have done nothing illegal,” she said. “They do not ever charge, which would be illegal, for fetal tissue. They have only defrayed the cost of mailing that to someone, which is not breaking the law.”

She also criticized the selectively edited videos released by the Center for Medical Progress, pointing to the “disparities” between actual film and edited versions.

[…]

She said government investigators should, instead, focus on the legality of the Center for Medical Progress’s political activity, backing an effort by several House Democrats who have called for a Department of Justice probe.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Wednesday that she would review “all information” available before deciding to launch a full investigation.

UPDATE at 7/23/15 10:52:41 am by Charles Johnson

Meanwhile, the Republican Party’s top politicians are gladly helping promote this vile dishonest smear campaign.

Good. So far, the only illegal activities that have been exposed were the ones committed by the so called “pro-lifers”.

The right wing has no end to the number of mindless memes that they are spreading across the twitters and innernuts because of these bogus claims.

For people who aren’t really paying attention to all of this, they just read headlines and skim and may actually think that PP was doing this.

They weren’t. And aren’t selling fetal tissue.

For one thing, it’s illegal. At no point in the videos are they discussing sales of fetal tissue. Rather, they’re discussing normal and customary reimbursement for transporting the preserved tissue for researchers.

What these videos show is that the anti-choice right wingers are intent to use all manner of actions - legal and illegal - to further their goal of increasing the costs of health care, reducing access to health care, and undermining reproductive rights of women across the nation.

This cannot stand.

She’s his niece actually. I hate saying it but she really comes off desperate to use her uncle’s name ot legitimate right wing causes. When her aunt, Dr. King’s widow came out in favor of SSM, she pulled this crap too and said “Well I got his blood so blah blah.” Nevermind the fact that MLK’s surviving children also stood with their mom on said issue and the fact that their father stood up for Bayard Rustin, a gay socialist. I don’t want to beat up the woman too hard but she tries to use the fact that MLK is her uncle to try to legitimize right wing causes which he certainly never supported.

Does Cruz EVER go to, like, you know, actual work at his, uh, JOB?

Ah, here’s the answer—Rubio is even more of a slacker.

But Senator Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican, has a 70 percent attendance rate this year, meaning that for the 30 percent of the days he was out, he missed 69 votes.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, another Republican, isn’t very far behind, with 55 missed votes, or 77 percent attendance.

If Ted Cruz is doing a better job than you at doing your job………But yes this is exactly why I called Rubio last night. He doesn’t have solutions. He just goes on Fox and throws red meat because he wants the base to love him again after he broke their heart by actually acting like something of a decent person on immigration. You know, a lot of women in this country are just done with the bullshit. And we really don’t feel like being nice about it any more.

Notorious RBG. Nancy Pelosi. Elizabeth Warren. Wendy Davis. Jenny Anderson Horne, the Republican in South Carolina that stood up to her colleagues over the Confederate flag and said “I have heard ENOUGH about heritage!”

My great-grandmother used to say, “My husband is head of the household until I get enough of it.” I’ve been thinking of that quote a lot these past couple of years. There’s a lot of disgusted women around right now who are tired of idiots, and women in leadership positions are speaking for us. Go get ‘em, Nancy.

They just can’t seem to be able to make it clear. Just because one thing is perfectly clear in your mind does not mean it is clear in others reasoning. This cannot stand.

When you engage with them, and point to facts, documents, citations, numbers etc. that challenge their statements, their response is ‘Look at the video!!!”

They claim the ACA was passed in secret, that nobody knew what wa in it. Tell them that the text of the ACA was available on line for 3 1/2 months before it was passed, and they tell you to look at the video of Pelosi saying you need to pass it to find out what’s in it.

They claim that Barney Frank and Chris Dodd prevented the Republicans from stopping the Mortgage Crisis. You point out that both of them were in the minority and there is no record of a Republican bill that would have done anything, and they tell you to watch this video of Dodd and Frank talking about mortgages.

Same thing here. They say PP was selling body parts. Point out that both Nucatola and Gatter repeatedly say nobody’s making a profit, and that $30-100/sample is barely enough to cover costs, and they say to watch this video where Gatter jokes about wanting a Lamborghini.

The impression created by the video is more important to them than the verifiable facts. This is what happens when you value BELIEF over KNOWLEDGE.

The GOP has the AM airwaves and a whole cable news service. Throw in the appearances on national TV of the usual GOP hacks. Maybe you get a newspaper, maybe not. If you do you probably get no two sides to any story. AP stories are mangled in small papers. Throw in no ability or willingness to seek the facts on all the dirt being throw by the right wing. No computer, or if you have one, you look for reinforcement of your mindset, not truth. So the majority of regular everyday stiffs is a cluster of late, tilted, outright false or incorrect information. And the lie is repeated until it passes for fact.

If they were more interested in facts than dogma, they wouldn’t be Republican throwbacks. In a sane country, they’d all be marginalized due to their absurd beliefs. Here they’re rewarded by a completely delusional subculture that insists on being lied to.

I see it as more basic to their personality than just being a delusional subculture. I have no data to tell me where exactly it comes from, but the importance of belief over knowledge, the need for certainty even at the expense of accuracy, the extreme discomfort with nuance, the black/white view of everything, and the need for simple solutions all seems to be a deep-seated pattern.

Where does it come from? Hard to say. I used to be very much a ‘Nurture’ believer on personality traits till I realized how much of my and my wife’s traits were showing up in our children at really early stages of childhood.

Exactly. (Reuters) - Sandra Bland, the black woman found hanging dead in a Texas jail days after a traffic stop, smoked or possibly swallowed a large amount of marijuana while in custody, her family’s attorney reported the district attorney as saying.

1. She was certainly strip-searched before she was jailed (in her booking photo, she was wearing scrubs) and yet they couldn’t find a “large amount of marijuana”?

2. Release the tox reports. The DA and LEOs have zero credibility at this point.

3. If she swallowed “large amount of marijuana”, there almost certainly would still be amounts in the stomach and its routine to remove and open the stomach during an autopsy.

Sandra Bland had marijuana in her system, DA reported as saying

The fix was in starting the moment she died.

Not a “model citizen”? Your death is on you.
Not deferential enough to an unreasonable officer? Your death is on you.
Panicked or having a medical emergency? Your death is on you.

Here is nice summary from a law enforcement true believer:

Even though it might sound harsh and impolitic, here is the bottom line: if you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you. Don’t argue with me, don’t call me names, don’t tell me that I can’t stop you, don’t say I’m a racist pig, don’t threaten that you’ll sue me and take away my badge. Don’t scream at me that you pay my salary, and don’t even think of aggressively walking towards me.

Jacob Nachumi is a documentary photographer based in Israel. As an Orthodox Jew, Nachumi has spent six years pointing his camera lens at the rituals, customs, and culture of his community.

The 32-year-old photographer was raised in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, just east of Tel Aviv, and was educated at an ultra-Orthodox yeshiva, a school for studying traditional texts of the faith.

After photographing his environment for some time, Nachumi began trying to gain a deeper view of the traditions around him by attempting to see the customs from an outsider’s point of view. He also worked to gain access to private ceremonies that are normally closed off to outsiders — he was often driven away, but some communities did let him (and his camera) in.

Shocking news, David Barton has a sane take on something

On his “WallBuilders Live” radio program today, Barton took a question from a listener on the controversy over the Confederate flag and the idea that the Civil War was really fought over the principle of states’ rights and not the issue of slavery.

Barton outright rejected this sort of “revision of history” and spent more than ten minutes explaining that the Civil War was explicitly fought over the issue of slavery, as he declared that it appalls him to see schools named after Confederate generals like Nathan Bedford Forrest and compared the actions of Confederate soldiers to ISIS.

“It was not about states’ rights,” Barton said. “It was about slavery.”

As Barton explained, the documents written and speeches given by those who supported secession regularly cited the preservation of slavery as the primary factor. The idea that the Civil War was fought to protect states’ rights, Barton said, is absurd considering that the Confederate constitution explicitly prohibited states from abolishing slavery.

“It was not about states’ rights, it was about slavery,” Barton said. “What we’ve seen as a result of this is a lot of revision of history. And today, it literally appalls me to see that throughout the south, they still have elementary schools named after Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was one of the great Confederate generals in the Civil War. But you know, Nathan Bedford Forrest was also the founder of the Ku Klux Klan … We’ve got elementary schools named after a great murderer?”

He was really quite strong in his condemnations, never mentioning political parties.

Barton went on to liken Confederate prisoner of war camps for Union soldiers to Nazi death camps as he revealed that of all the official prayer proclamations that he collects for this library, he will not accept any Confederate proclamations from the likes of Jefferson Davis “because what they were praying for to God is like ISIS praying.”

“Look at the pictures, read the accounts,” Barton said. “Read what happened to blacks, read the hearings in Congress on the various things that were done to blacks. It’s not human. It’s what Germans did to Jews, saying ‘Well, they aren’t human, we can do this to them.’”

Barton said that he realizes that lots of Confederate leaders and soldiers were strong Christians “but that doesn’t mean what they fought for was right … The bottom line is you judge a tree by its fruits and the states’ right they fought to preserve was that of keeping blacks as non-people, as non-humans and they treated blacks and they treated Union soldiers in that manner and that’s just unacceptable.”

Just watched Maddow’s interview with Santorum in its entirety— start to finish. It was a real eye-opener for me because of the stark contrast to last week’s Trump interview on Morning Joe. I couldn’t finish that Trump interview, it was so awful I had to turn it off. Listening to Trump is just torture— nails on a chalkboard. Santorum is 100% wrong on absolutely everything, but he’s (mostly) civil. Trump is also 100% wrong on absolutely everything, but there’s nothing civil about Trump.

When I think about all those other candidates (Jeb, Christie, Perry, Huckabee, Jindahl, Rubio, Walker, Rand, Graham, Carson, Kasich) sure all of them are totally smug and totally stupid. But NONE of them are as dreadfully nauseating as Trump. He’s truly in a class of his own.

I don’t think I’m alone on this. If he’s the nominee, the party is doomed.

Senators lying about the issue, who’da thought.

Kyl’s illustrious Republican predecessor, Senator Barry Goldwater, was one of the founders of Planned Parenthood of Arizona. His wife was president of the organization and the senator himself served on the board for many years.
The Goldwater Award

Each year, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) presents The Barry Goldwater Award to an outstanding public official who has supported Planned Parenthood and reproductive health issues.

This prestigious award is presented each year to an outstanding elected official who has acted as a leader within the Republican Party to protect women’s reproductive rights across the United States.

The award honors the late Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, an outspoken leader in the Republican Party for decades. Senator Goldwater was a freethinking individual, who voted his conscience and was a leading voice in the Republican Party to ensure the rights granted to women following the Roe v. Wade decision.

They still award it. Republican Lisa Murkowski was the 2014 winner.

Of course, Murkowski is rejected as a RINO by the dominant nut brigade, as Goldwater undoubtedly would be if he were still alive. Goldwater was widely regarded as the founder of the conservative movement. This is a useful, if appalling, measure of just how far the GOP has devolved and how far to the right the spectrum has shifted.

That is precisely why I’d like to see Trump get the GOP nomination. It would take something like that to finally force the GOP enablers to decide whether to stand with the wingnuts or against them.

Even if Trump were to become POTUS, random mayhem coming from the White House would likely be less destructive than what we’d get from ideologues like Cruz or Walker.

I’m hearing a lot of the Right calling people who disagree with nonscientific statements ‘anti-science’. Most recently it revolved around the idea that to refer to a trans person by their own gender identification, rather than their karyotype is ‘unscientific’.

What nonsense! It’s the same old binary thinking. They want things to be EITHER/OR, so that one is completely male or completely female, and they think Nature works that way. Bullshit. Nature gives us spectra. Nature gives us probability distributions. Nature gives us outliers.

I wouldn’t be too sure about that. What if something happened that caused Trump to call another world leader a dummy or a loser?

They’re grade-school insults for sure, but Trump mouthing off like that could cause a lot of trouble with friend and foe alike.

I’d just rahter he get nowhere near the White House, thanks.

But they become totes Anti-Science again on the subjects of evolution and climate, so they are really not that into Science.

Band name for a folk music group: “Pedantic Friends”.

Pedantic Friends Network. Not as profitable as, and considerably more tedious than, the Psychic Friends Network.

BTW, I bet with the latter, the usual telephone greeting is “I knew you were going to call!”

Oh, but Evolution isn’t REAL science, because even though the theory makes predictions that all turn out to be true, nobody saw dogs turning into cats.

And Climate Scientists just want to destroy Capitalism, for some unspecified reason.

Mrs. FBW has even stopped opening the back door in the middle of winter and standing in the howling breeze that blows through it.

Mine still sometimes goes through that “Is is hot in here to you?” moments. But they are a lot less often than they were a few years back.

And I still say, Trump actually being President would be less of a disaster than almost any of the others (I don’t know much about Pataki.) A lot of this crap he spews is just noise—he’s not going to try to implement the Religious Right’s agenda for example. They’re idiots if they think he will.

I can’t even wrap my head around even a remote possibility of Trump being President. It would be “Beyond Idiocracy.” (Trumpdow—plants crave it ‘cause it has electrolytes!)

Kinda glad I’m old and don’t have kids.

Mrs. FBW has difficulty with the whole concept of objective ambient temperature. She invariably says, “It’s hot in here “, rather than “I’M hot”.

I’m willing to pay almost any price to see the supposedly sane Republicans forced to vote for or against a GOP Base Id-Monster like Trump in a general election.

Having seen up close and personal how mind-numbingly stupid some of these supposed “sane Republicans” are, I’m not willing to take that chance with our country’s future.

Realistically, the only possibility for significant political reform in the US is if the GOP is destroyed or forced to radically change in order to remain competitive.

The only driver I can see for something like that is at least one massive GOP loss in a presidential election (preferably several in a row). The only chance for such massive losses is for the GOP candidates to be loons (e.g., Trump) that not even the MSM can pretend are reasonable choices.

However, the risk that the loon becomes president is real. IMO, the US is doomed anyway if Trump could win a general election, so I don’t see a value added in keeping the GOP nomination away from him.

re: #182 Ian G.
People, she’s not going to have any weed anywhere near her, especially driving cross-country going to her dream job at a school. A pot charge would pretty much eliminate her job, especially in Texas.

She’s also not going to give the cops any reason to stop her and keep her-which is what would happen if they even stopped her and found any.

If she had weed enough to impair-where’s the charge for possession? It would be easy enough to do so at once and justify her detention and an increase in her bail.

The cops are doing two things at once: scrambling to justify what has happened, and poisoning a potential jury pool of elderly white people who still believe in “reefer madness”. Folks who know better and don’t always believe the cops have already moved out of town towards the city-any city-because of jobs and repression.

As a Gen-Xer who absolutely loved the arcade games of the early 80s, who fed countless quarters into Robotron, Spy Hunter, Zaxxon, Centipede, et al., I have to agree with the scathing review of “Pixels.”

It is a giant gorilla turd. It is a cynical exploitation that is so Adam Sandler-bad that it makes you hate everything you once loved.

Extra credit: copy down the verbiage dumped down upon this movie. Save & re-use later to describe the GOP debate on Fox.
