Another Movie Theater Shooting, in Louisiana

Multiple injuries reported
US News • Views: 66,894

Oh no. We have what appears to be another act of random gun violence, at a movie theater in Louisiana: Shooting Reported at Grand Theatre on Johnston.

City Marshal Brian Pope has confirmed for The Daily Advertiser that six people were injured in a shooting Thursday night at the Grand Theatre.

The shooter then turned the gun on himself, Pope said, and is dead.

Katie Domingue of Carencro was at the 7 p.m. showing of “Train Wreck” with her fiance’, Joshua Doggett. About 20 minutes into the movie, Domingue said, she heard a loud noise.

“We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker,” she said.

She saw “an older white man” standing up and shooting down, not in her direction.

“He wasn’t saying anything. I didn’t hear anybody screaming either,” Domingue said.

She heard about six shots, then she and Doggett ran to the nearest exit, leaving behind her shoes and purse.

Is this another murder-suicide?

murder - suicide incidents are becoming more frequent it seems? Or more being reported.

Wasn’t it last week when the mistress killed the wife of the man she was cheating with and then killed herself?

I think murder-suicides are up in domestic incidents for sure. Many are older couples too…which is historically weird, but I am not sure of the numbers And then there are the tragic cases where the shooter takes out the whole family and then commits suicide.

But we as a country do not want to talk about the real numbers. Well, except how gun sales are up and there is a shortage of ammo because ‘someone’ is coming to take the guns.

What is that definition of insanity again?

Can we talk about gun control yet? On my FB feed, one of my more liberal Christian friends posted a picture from a wingnut friend of his that says, “We need more armed Americans.” My reply was: Saturating America with 100% gun ownership might reduce mass shootings, but at the cost of skyrocketing rates of other gun violence. But apparently, having everyone own guns will magically make stupidity, anger, and violence go away! Ugh.

47
austin_blue  Jul 23, 2015 • 7:22:50pm

Guns don’t kill people, bullets kill people.

So if you outlaw the sale and possession of 9mm bullets (with an automatic five-year sentence) and allow the sale of 9.5 mm bullets and the strict control of 9.5mm pistol sales with storage of the weapons at strictly regulated gun clubs (They are recreational! It’s sport!)…

Flipped around to all the “news” stations and here’s the report:

Nobody knows anything. Everyone is wildly speculating. Some are pontificating about how the investigation will progress (with no known facts upon which to base their noise.) Big discussion on whether the shooter was, as an eyewitness said, in his 50s or perhaps he might be older—or perhaps younger.

And it could have been a domestic issue…or an in-theater fight between patrons…or a robbery…who knows? Not the idiots who are rambling on about it.

Sorry to be so disgusted, but I’m disgusted—that this shit happens almost daily, and that the media just want to run their mouths with no facts, no news, just a desire to be on the air flapping their jaws.

And you’re right to do that. We don’t know a lot of facts yet, including what this guy’s sick motivation was.

On the other hand, we DO know that these kinds of mass shootings don’t happen often in the rest of the developed world. In that respect, we have a problem and the numbers don’t lie. So maybe it’s appropriate to bite your tongue on the specifics of this case, but still unbite your tongue on the general nationwide carnage (unmatched in the developed world) due to the extremely easy access we have to firearms, among other things.

Here’s a chart from a Politifact article meant to partially debunk Obama’s statement that “these kinds of mass violent attacks don’t occur with as much frequency in the rest of the advanced world.” I’d say the chart supports Obama’s statement. But that’s just an observation based on my ability to count.

gotnwes.com is running behind the news cycle, but here’s its latest blockbuster:

Why does ‘new media’ mogul Chuck C. Johnson live with his in-laws?

Famed doxxer and Twitter persona non grata Chuck C. Johnson, who bills himself as an Award Winning JournalistTM and builder of a game-changing new media empire, lives with his in-laws in Fresno, California, gotnwes.com has learned.

Normally, we wouldn’t bother bringing this up, or even suggest the irony of such a living arrangement, but Johnson’s GotNewsDotCom blog just published the supposed home address of Jose Antonio Vargas, a highly successful writer and film maker who also happens to be an undocumented immigrant from the Philippines.

The address is in a ritzy neighborhood in San Francisco with typical home prices in the millions. GotNewsDotCom has offered no proof that the Jose Antonio Vargas at that address is the same Vargas as a the writer/film maker in question.

Just as we have no proof that Johnson lives in a rental house in Clovis, CA, a house which may or may not be the one shown above. The value of the house is somewhere around $250,000, but who cares since Johnson doesn’t own it anyway.

He’s too young to know about Charles Whitman.

Charles Whitman’s house is on Jewell Street about six blocks south of me. Back in the era, the USPS made two deliveries a day. At around ten AM that morning, the postman saw Charlie with a hacksaw in his garage sawing the barrel of of a pump shotgun.

They exchanged pleasantries, and the mailman continued with his rounds, not knowing that Charlie’s very pregnant wife was murdered in the front bedroom of the house and that Charlie was about ready to pack up his Marine duffel bag and go to school.

How does this moron think much of the understanding of the human body came about? Researchers have, in one form or another, been using living and dead tissue to delve into how we work for centuries. Where do they think the idea came from of donating one’s body to science? And if they’re that shocked and outraged, but also organ donors, then they’re fucking morons.

This is what Jindal said mere hours after the Chattanooga shootings.

This shooting underscores the grave reality of the threat posed to us by radical Islamic terrorism every single day. It’s time for the White House to wake up and tell the truth…and the truth is that Radical Islam is at war with us, and we must start by being honest about that. There have been many bad things that have happened under President Obama. One that stands out to me was the horrible shooting at Ft. Hood…which was clearly an act of terrorism by a Radical Islamist. Yet the White House labeled that horrible act as ‘workplace violence.’ This is grotesque. You cannot defeat evil until you admit that it exists.”

All of these idiots who whine about ‘gun free’ zones need to consider how useful their gun is going to be trying to take down a sniper firing from a tower.

Well here’s the thing about that, and there is a fair amount of archival video to back it up. Lots of folks routinely hung deer rifles in their trucks or kept them cased in their trunks back in the day. Texas thing.

Many of them were unlimbered, loaded, and fired at Charlie, especially from The Drag (Guadalupe Street) where a lot of the initial victims were shot. It kept him from that side of the tower and allowed the two police officers who eventually killed him to get into the building and up through the stairs of the slaughterhouse to get to the viewing deck where one blew his head off with a shotgun.

Pistols would have been as influential as a fart in a hurricane. I like long guns. I’ve got a couple. But they need to have a magazine capacity of eight or less. If you can’t hit it w/ eight shots, you shouldn’t be allowed to have the gun. They are hard to conceal, and weapons should be overt.

I hate pistols. All they’re good for is shooting lots of people really fast.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

But load up a shotgun and walk around like you are going to shoot a motherfucker and you get a talking to.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Not that think it is ok to do the street corner asshole thing, but they ([police - government) are regulating my speech using the law even though there is no mention of regulation in the whole amendment.

re: #131 Eventual Carrion

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

If only people could read (I’m looking at you, Scalia).

1) “A well regulated militia”: Of course the Framers said “militia” because they never thought we could afford a Standing Army or a Fleet in Being, but we have both, plus an Air Force, a Coast Guard to do the actual work the Navy is too good for, and the Navy has its own private army. “Well-regulated” is a very specific term of art in 18th century military parlance. A military force is “well-regulated” if it has a rigid and unbreakable rank hierarchy, has all rank bestowed by civilian authority (i.e., no election of officers)*, and has a system of discipline so savage that the rank-and-file fear their officers much more than the enemy, so running away would never occur to them.

*By the way, this means that many State Militias as late as the Civil War were not “well-regulated”.

2) “being necessary to the security of a free state” says, as clearly as it’s possible to say anything, that this militia exists to protect the State, not for each of its members to protect himself.

3) “the right of the people” means the People, collectively. If they had meant “the right of every man” (sorry, it would have said “man”), they would have said so. They weren’t shy about saying it elsewhere.

4) “to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Well, “we the people” do “keep and bear arms”—we have the aforementioned Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps, every state has a National Guard armed at public expense to murder strikers and their families because the plutocrats got tired of hiring thugs out of their own pockets. (Governors have been reluctant to call them out for that in recent decades, but get enough Walkers and Brownbacks in there and who knows?)

But all of this is irrelevant to the question of handguns. Believe me, the last thing the writers of the Second Amendment had in mind was dueling pistols or naval boarding pistols as weapons necessary to the security of the state. The weapons that served that function in those days were smoothbore muskets. Despite the mythology about the Kentucky rifle, and sniping British officers from behind trees, the hail of lead from massed muskets protected the security of the 18th century state.

The thing is, nowadays, the security of the state might very well require ICBMs with MIRVed nuclear warheads. Personal firearms, long or short, are irrelevant when we have innumerable trained, heavily armed soldiers. Every yahoo with a firearm added together, contributes not one iota to the security of the state, therefore the Second Amendment has nothing to say on the matter.

Sorry about the TL;DR, but this whole Second Amendment Fetish crap drives me apeshit.

Now understand, with a very small number of exceptions most of us were true “Weekend Warriors”, got to fire our weapons on the range once a year, stuff like that. There were some folks who were law enforcement or others that had advanced training.

We were doing our annual training, and word had come down of an ‘enemy patrol’ in our area. We all took up positions on the perimeter. Pretty soon shots rang out from the North side of the perimeter, so all of us on the south side spun around and started shooting north. Meanwhile, the people on the north heard shots coming from behind them, spun around and started shooting south. The others along the perimeter opened fire because with all this shooting the enemy must be someplace. The fact that we were all firing blanks is probably the only reason I’m here to tell the tale.

The Observer-Controllers, (regular Army), after they stopped laughing hysterically, told us that about 50 percent of us were dead or wounded, and that the nearest enemy was 5 miles away having chow.

Yea, tell me how well the theater thing will work.

I recommend that you don’t read comments on any of the rightwing sites about this latest tragedy. Right when I thought these folks couldn’t get any worse, I saw statements on more than one that said outright that they hoped that none of the victims were white. Calling these individuals sociopaths is far, far, too kind.

//

Apparently, white teens who build gun drones do as well:

A Connecticut teenager who created a gun-firing drone and posted a video of it to Youtube was arrested by police Wednesday.

Nineteen-year-old Austin Haughwout was arrested after he attempted to turn himself over to Clinton Police on a previous warrant and got into an altercation with cops at the station.

SNIP

Other officers had to respond after a physical altercation ensued between Haughwout and the officer. Haughwout had to be physically restrained in the lobby of the station and handcuffed.

During the altercation, Haughwout physically assaulted two officers by striking and kicking at them repeatedly, police said. The officers sustained minor injuries and did not require immediate medical attention.

As for me, I’ve been hanging around you liberals too long, because when I first saw the guys name I thought “He has to be white. If he was black, the arrest warrant would have triggered a SWAT callout and no-knock warrant.” I didn’t see the guy’s photo till now, but I was right.

To continue in the FPS motif, he’s going to be labeled with his name (in contrasting color to the background), class and a health bar. If he’s an elite, his label will be gold. He will also be glowing around the edges if he has some type of shield, in this case, a bullet proof vest.

May 2014:
Gov Jindal Signs Law Legalizing “Silencers” for Hunters

Sound suppressors are actually quite common in other countries, most with stricter gun laws than in the US. In the US, To buy a suppressor for hunting, one must have get the purchase approved by the ATF, which means registering the suppressor, paying a $200 transfer tax, and submitting fingerprints.

Believe me, legalizing sound suppressors for hunting isn’t problematic. They are well enough regulated to make strawbuying largely impossible, and any transfer of ownership requires payment of the $200 tax and ATF approval.

Suppressors reduce the risk of hearing damage to the firer by reducing the noise level of the gunfire. They also keep the shots from spooking other nearby animals.

Movies these days are LOUD, and there’s a lot of cutting, so the light levels are changing constantly. A lot of them are chock full of hyperrealistic gunshots, so THAT is what we all think gunshots sound like.

Most witnesses say “I heard a popping noise”, not “I heard a gunshot.”

So, you hear some popping noises. Some folks turn around in their seats. Some stand up and run toward the nearest exit. Some duck for cover.

You stand up and turn around, drawing your gun. Everyone else sees a guy with a gun, maybe the ONLY guy with a gun they can see, because maybe the shooter is smart enough to shoot from cover. You become the shooter, to a number of them. You die in a hail of gunfire.

Lame, dude. Silencers are not needed for police or civilians. Military is a different story.

It’s not about need, its about it these being a legal, well-regulated, product people want to use. Since the passage of the National Firearms Act in 1934, there has not been a mass-shooting where the shooter used a legally owned suppressor and the number used for wrongful purposes can be counted on a person’s fingers.

And if the odds of misuse are that low, then such products should be allowed. The key point is not ‘need’, it is the likelihood of harm. If a a given type of firearm or firearm accessory is extremely unlikely to be used to commit a crime, then it should legal.

In Tradition Archery forums, there is a thread every couple weeks where somebody has picked up a stickbow after years of hunting with wheeliebows (compounds), and is full of the Zeal of the Newly Converted. They talk about what “Traditional Archery means to me!”, which usually leads to a ‘More Primitive Than Thou’ escalation.

One time, the folks on the forum, who had seen this umpteen times, just kept that idea going.

“BOW? You want to be primitive, you use a SPEAR!”

“SPEAR? You have to use a CLUB!”

“CLUB? You have to use a KNIFE!”

“KNIFE!? You have to drop on them from above and strangle them with your BARE HANDS!”

I wonder if the police are swarming the home of the shooter yet and dragging out females in handcuffs for all the world to see… And what about the bomb squad, paramilitary stuff, and closed off neighborhood streets? Are those things reserved just for certain shooters?

It’s been over a week since that shooting and I don’t recall having heard of any Muslim females having been jailed and charged as accomplices, have you? Did I miss something?

Damn. You are exactly right.

In response to the shootings in Lafayette, Louisiana earlier tonight, Governor Bobby Jindal asked his Twitter followers to “say a prayer for the victims at Grand Theatre and their families.”

While I understand the sentiment — you want to do something in the aftermath of a tragedy — let’s all admit that prayer won’t change anything. They won’t stop another shooting in the future. They won’t bring back the victims. Maybe they’ll help the people saying them get through the night, but there’s no effect greater than that.

[…]

We don’t need prayers. We need politicians with the courage to take on the NRA.

I don’t understand, I just don’t. What was I supposed to do, just let the non-sequitur pass because it went after firearms and Bobby Jindal? if anyone right-of-center made a similar ‘related’, but not really related’ remark on this blog they’d get jumped on. It true I geeked out a bit, but I was discussing the federal laws controlling sound suppressors. I did not link to any pictures or articles on the devices, nor did I discuss their technology.

I respectfully submit that discussing the law in a non-hostile manner is not “gun fucking”.

How about this: Lets just drop the topic for the night.

No one can escape the law, at least existentially, or whatever people are calling it these days.

In front of the law there is a doorkeeper. A man from the countryside comes up to the door and asks for entry. But the doorkeeper says he can’t let him in to the law right now. The man thinks about this, and then he asks if he’ll be able to go in later on. “That’s possible,” says the doorkeeper, “but not now”. The gateway to the law is open as it always is, and the doorkeeper has stepped to one side, so the man bends over to try and see in. When the doorkeeper notices this he laughs and says, “If you’re tempted give it a try, try and go in even though I say you can’t. Careful though: I’m powerful. And I’m only the lowliest of all the doormen. But there’s a doorkeeper for each of the rooms and each of them is more powerful than the last. It’s more than I can stand just to look at the third one.”

In 1934 when the NFA went into effect that $200 tax stamp was the equivalent of $3,561.76 today. The problem with the law isn’t that it’s onerous, it’s that it’s not onerous enough. There’s been a dramatic increase in the number of suppressors, short barreled shotguns short barreled rifles registered in the last couple of decades because the $200 assessment was never increased to match inflation. The only reason that machine guns aren’t part of this trend is the 1986 ban on the registration of new weapons in that category, so if the receiver wasn’t registered prior to then it cannot be transferred between civilians.

You obviously assess the situation without firing blindly. First person to fire knows where the shooter is, likely dropped him.

Hmm….

1) Former good guy with a gun starts shooting people in middle of theater. 2-3 people shot

2) Other good guys with guns all stand up (theater seats are tight on the sides, especially when you’re overweight like most Americans are), grabs gun, puts a round in the chamber, starts looking around to where the shooting is coming from. At this point more good guys with guns are doing the same. 2-3 more people shot

At this point, even with best reflexes, 5 seconds have gone. A Glock 17 has a cyclic rate of 800 spm so a 17 shot mag can be emptied in about 3 seconds ideally. Realistically bad guy can probably empty it half way.

Now here’s the part I don’t get….

3) Shoot the bad guy somehow without missing him in a crowded dark theater and make sure you don’t hit any other innocents in the crowd — or other good guys with guns firing and doing the same.

This is all assuming that people nearby the shooter aren’t engaging the guy and trying to disarm him. So all these good guys with guns will probably also be shooting a hero without a gun who is wrestling said shooter to the ground.

If you want to defend yourself and your family at home with a gun, then that is your choice and your right.

If you want to defend other people in a public place, then you need good situational awareness, years of training and experience, and nerves of steel.

That is not a skills set you can purchase over the counter at your local Wal-Mart sporting goods department.

Again, I argue that the increase in the number of registered NFA firearms is not problematic because they have not been used to commit crimes.

There are, or were, the Sons of Confederate Veterans plate has/had a Confederate Flag on it. The state is in the process of removing it from the design and recalling/reissuing the plates (the flag wasn’t part of the design as approved by the General Assembly and was only on the plate as part of a court order).

Police say 18-year-old Austin Haughwout was told to turn himself in on Wednesday, stemming from an incident on July 19. That incident is not connected to the drone with the attached gun. Officials say Houghwout was parked at the library after hours and went berserk when police approached.

“When he tried to stop him, Mr. Houghwout initially stopped, questioned the officer’s authority for stopping him, and then prior to the officer’s backup arriving, Mr. Houghwout drove away,” said Clinton Police Sgt. Jeremiah Dunn.

He stopped a quarter mile up the road, but the teenager allegedly kept the car in drive, refused to get out, and screamed at officers that they had no right to detain him. Clinton police backed down.

“The decision was made at that time, instead of putting our officers in harm’s way of getting injured by a moving vehicle, that we would merely culminate the investigation by an arrest warrant,” Sgt. Dunn said.

Backwoods_Sleuth  Jul 24, 2015 • 5:00:57am
The gunman initially tried escaping by blending into the fleeing crowd, but turned back when he saw police heading inside from the parking lot, authorities said. Officers tailing him back into the theater then heard a single gunshot and found him dead inside, police said.

They described the shooter as a 58-year-old “lone white male” with a criminal history but did not immediately disclose his name. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said the gunman was by himself and started the rampage by shooting the two people sitting in front of him.

You would think wouldn’t you?
But, the brace is designed to be worn around the forearm, it has two plastic arms & a velcro strap, and is explicitly marketed as not to be used as a shoulder stock.
ATF has issued a finding stating that as long as you don’t used it in a way it is not designed for, you’re OK.
As soon as you put it to your shoulder and fire a round, you’ve violated federal law.

Edit:
And yes, you can find tons of videos on YouTube of people violating federal law with it

Looks like a great pitch. Too bad the Mets need hitters, not another quality pitcher. /nope, not sarcasm. The Mets really need hitters. Last night, they were subject to a perfect game by Kershaw for 7+ innings. Their cleanup hitter was hitting .170. Most of their lineup is batting under .250. A significant portion is batting under .225. That’s beyond awful, and makes the amazing things their pitching staff has done under the circumstances even more mind blowing.

Three starting pitchers have higher batting averages than some of the regulars that are in the lineup.

If the Mets ever could get a couple of good hitters, they’d be in great shape heading into September. If not, it’ll be a very long summer.

Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at Faulkner University

Jones School of Law was founded in 1928 by Montgomery County Circuit Judge Walter B. Jones, an ardent segregationist. The law school is named after Judge Walter B. Jones’ father, Thomas Goode Jones, an alumnus of the Virginia Military Institute, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, and Governor of Alabama for two terms. He was also appointed by President Theodore Rooseveltto serve as the United States District Judge for the Northern and Middle Districts of Alabama. Thomas Goode Jones authored the Alabama Code of Ethics, a document that served as a model for the American Bar Association’s 1908 Canons of Professional Ethics”.

And the never-ending topic on sports radio is that the Wilpons refuse to a) spend the money to bring in a bat and b) refuse to trade one of those young arms to get a bat in return.

I’m thinking that even if they make a move, they’re going to half-ass it in order to save a little money, which is a shame. If they picked up a couple of even competent bats to go with all those stud pitchers, they could make some noise from here on out and maybe even see some playoffs.

All those harsh things I said about Anniston AL the other night? Phenix City makes Anniston look like Berkeley. It was taken over by the National Guard in the 50s when the crime-driven murder rate got out of hand.

“The 1955 film The Phenix City Story (directed by Phil Karlson) is a biopic film noir focusing on the rampant crime and corruption in the city (then called “the wickedest city in the United States”) and the 1954 murder of newly nominated Alabama Attorney General candidate Albert Patterson.”

That’s the sort of information which may indicate whether he had a particular person or group as a target, or just finally snapped and really did become a random shooter. And given the FB posts a film like “Trainwreck” was probably not selected due to him wanting to see it for the content.

75 mass shootings since Sandy Hook in 2012. That’s 3 years or roughly 156 weeks. Once every two weeks we have a mass shooting.

It’s pathetic. And yet the gun rights folks refuse to concede that there’s a problem with any of this. Their solution, as it has been for years, is that we need even more guns.

That’s despite clear problems with the background checks that don’t apply to all transactions, that the checks themselves can miss stuff because of not timely data entry, that the FBI can sometimes allow checks get approved because they don’t respond in a timely fashion, etc.

Fixing any of those could prevent some of these shootings. Better mental health care could help in others.

More guns, however, is not the answer.

As we’ve seen in just the past few days, even the DoD is telling its recruiters to be on the watch for militia types who are “defending” recruiting stations because the DoD fears accidental discharges or other problems - and within hours of that - there was indeed one such incident.

It is very difficult for a sheriff to turn down a permit in Alabama—a “shall issue” state.

§13A-11-75. “(a)(1)a. The sheriff of a county, upon the application of any person residing in that county, may within 30 days from receipt of a complete application and accompanying fee, shall issue or renew a qualified or unlimited license permit to for such person to carry a pistol in a vehicle or concealed on or about his or her person within this state… unless the sheriff determines that the person is prohibited from the possession of a pistol or firearm pursuant to state or federal law, or has a reasonable suspicion that the person may use a weapon unlawfully or in such other manner that would endanger the person’s self or others.”

Problem with this sentiment it ignores the whole issue of when you wave a Confederate flag, you’re announcing to the world “I side with the traitors who wanted to keep slavery going.”

I also have my doubts that the only black kid in Peanuts would have an attitude of “I don’t think the Stars and Bars are that big a deal.”

160 years after the Civil War ended, and huge swaths of this country are still in denial about what the war was about (slavery) and who won (the non-slavery side).

I’m failing to see what’s different between the American kind of look-the-other-way attitude towards history and the shit Turkey does with the Armenian genocide. It’s willful ignorance turned up to 11.

I’m failing to see what’s different between the American kind of look-the-other-way attitude towards history and the shit Turkey does with the Armenian genocide. It’s willful ignorance turned up to 11.

What great annoys me as a Southerner granted one with a Northern family background is how many people from Union states love sporting the Stars and Bars. It’s easy to want to say the CSA bullshit is just Southern but it’s not. BWS a few weeks ago or so pointed out that the number of Confederate memorials in Kentucky vastly outnumbers the Union ones. We’ve got too many people who have come to see the CSA as this romantic cause that was lost.

The Confederate battle flag has been widely adopted in the US as the choice anti-government “I’m a rebel” indicator by assholes. Usually conservative assholes. With the negative publicity and the rise of the Tea Party I think it is shifting over to the “Don’t Tread On Me” Gadsen flag now.

In either case it seems to be done without any serious consideration of what the flags really symbolize and what not being represented in government really means. And for most blacks in the pre-Civil War South that meant being counted as 3/5 of a person towards representation, but not having a vote or any of a number of other freedoms that the white males took for granted.

I heard on the radio yesterday (CBS news cycle, not right-wing hate radio) that it is not actually illegal to carry a firearm on an airplane, but that all carriers have policies that require a firearm to be unloaded and packed in a hardshell case, separate from the ammo, and checked as luggage. Firearms may not be brought into the cabin.

Houser’s LinkedIn page stops listing any accomplishments 15 years ago.
What might have happened?

LAFAYETTE, La. — The latest on the shooting at a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theater (times are local):

8:35 a.m.

Police and court records show the Louisiana movie theater gunman has been arrested and ticketed for several offenses in the past, ranging from arson to speeding.

Police officials said at a news conference Friday that 59-year-old John Russel Houser’s arrests date 10 to 15 years ago or more. Those include charges of arson and selling alcohol to a minor. He had been married once in the past but was not currently married.

In Alabama, records show Houser had four speeding tickets and one no-seatbelt ticket between 1981 and 2003.

Alabama court records show Houser filed a small claims court lawsuit in 2004 claiming he was injured when he donated plasma at a Phenix City donation center. He asked for $1,800 to pay his emergency room bill and for a narcotics prescription. The case was settled, according to court records.

No, he’s got a Tea Party page, a Linked-In profile — but someone already added the word ‘Muslim’ to his wiki. No kidding, take a look. “A 59-year-old white Muslim male”.

en.wikipedia.org

re: #320 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

now THAT is proactive

Well, if a shooter is Muslim it makes things a lot easier in terms of:

Political affiliation - Always jihad/shariah because there’s a Kenyan Muslim usurper in the White House

Intent - All are pious Muslims loyally following dictates of the Qur’an, never mind any other psych problems or obviously un-Islamic activities)

Ongoing threat potential - ISIS is here and we’re all gonna die at their hands! Open the internment camps & torture chambers! Deport and/or kill all the Muslims before they kill us (because we know they all secretly sympathize with terrorists and are just waiting to pounce)!

Speaking of, have y’all noticed that it’s been unusually quiet on the Da’esh front lately? If they’ve done anything spectacularly gruesome in the past month or two I haven’t heard about it (I’m talking about things beyond the “normal” suicide bombings, etc.)

Is nothing happening or is it simply not being reported? Maybe they’re too busy trying to stay alive to have time for arranging brutal sideshows?

re: #474 darthstar

[Embedded content]

Not exactly. He would build the tunnel as president because he could then avoid being labeled as hiking a tax to get it done.

ARC was cancelled and the money that had been set aside for the tunnel project was shifted to do major road rebuilding of two bridges near the Holland Tunnel (perhaps in violation of SEC rules on the bonds issued that limited where the money could go). Instead of hiking the gas tax in NJ to refill the debt laden transportation trust fund, he raided the Port Authority’s share of the ARC funds to make the bridge projects happen.

The bridge work needed to be done, but it shows just how dishonest Christie is in where/how the money was spent.

And I say that as someone who opposed ARC because it was the wrong project - it wouldn’t have increased capacity as much as claimed and would have been run by NJ Transit, which has shown a stunning inability to stay on budget for capital projects. The last major project they did - Secaucus Junction - was originally budgeted at $80 million. It ended up being $450 million, and was incomplete at that. They had to redo the fare gate areas, they didn’t have any parking, and several of the platforms had to be lengthened. Oh, and they’re now expanding bus access.

Gateway, which is the Amtrak led project, would be a much better one for the NEC - direct access to the central terminal at NY Penn allowing through-running trains instead of sending trains back to NJ b/c of a dead end as ARC would have had it. That increases capacity right there.

The hypocrisy of Bobby Jindal still pisses me off mightily. Here he is saying this is a time for love and prayers, a time for all Americans to “come together”.

He doesn’t want to talk about the shooter or the motive.

Contrast that to the statement he made mere hours after Chattanooga.

This apparent act of terrorism has taken the lives of four American heroes, and our hearts and prayers are with their families. While it’s too early to know for sure what happened, it certainly looks like an act of terrorism. We must pursue justice on their behalf and stop at nothing to hunt down and kill these evildoers abroad before more of them come here to kill our people.

Yet the White House labeled that horrible act as ‘workplace violence.’

This is grotesque. You cannot defeat evil until you admit that it exists.”

If all those patriotic citizens were allowed to carry guns onto an airplane, why would one expect the would be hijackers to be armed only with box-cutters?

THIS. If firearms should be easily accessible to everyone and carrying (concealed or not) made legal regardless of location, how do you ensure bad guys (Muslim or otherwise) aren’t armed as well? Do we say Muslims need a special permit? That’ll never fly legally.

Besides, how do you know for sure who’s Muslim? Remember this Tumblr created after Juan Williams idiotic comment about “Muslim garb”?

Not just “some yahoo,” but multiple ones. After all, in their scenarios, at least half the theater is packing just because it’s no longer a “gun free zone.” So instead of one Dirty Harry wannabe, you’ve got a dozen or more trying to shoot in a dark theater at what they think is the original shooter.

Trained cops routinely have injured and killed bystanders in active shooter situations. Happens all the time.

It isn’t all Dirty Harry in Magnum Force, where the cops are all perfect shots. They miss far more often than the movies care to portray - and these are professional law enforcement in actual conflict situations.

It isn’t one shot one kill. It’s usually a bunch of shots, and the suspect may be winged - or an innocent bystander is injured.

Precisely. Even trained cops will sometimes hit and sadly kill bystanders. So we’re to believe that a bunch of civilians would be able to get a shooter. I mean I think these people actually have good intentions but what they’re proposing isn’t a solution. They’re proposing something that would make things much more dangerous.

566
lawhawk  Jul 24, 2015 • 9:00:43am

Tactical cops - those in ESU or SWAT may receive far more training than the beat cop, but they too can end up firing and injuring bystanders.

In a mass casualty event, they would need to clear the movie theater and anyone with a firearm would be considered a threat until cleared. That means they’d waste time trying to deal with all the good guys with a gun before they actually stop the bad guy with a gun. In that kind of situation, every moment counts, so if you’ve got a handful of good guys with guns firing in every direction (because they’re all firing at each other in a confused manner since they may not recognize which is the true bad guy with a gun), you’ll likely end up with even more casualties.

Again, this isn’t the movies. The reality is that more firearms added to an already volatile situation will result in higher casualties.

And it’s the training that is the big thing, as in they have to constantly train for real scenarios, not just plinking at paper targets on a weekend afternoon. They have to be prepared for a multitude of possible scenarios, which means they have to learn how to control their instinct to run at the first loud sound or randomly begin spraying fire without first knowing what they’re shooting at. But, most importantly, they go into every situation not simply with a weapon and armor, but with other guys who are likewise specially trained so that they can rely upon teamwork.

I have to wonder how many of these gun nuts have ever fired a gun without ear protection. Guns are loud enough to be painful.

Also, after the first shot in a darkened theater the shooter could be dazzled by the muzzle flash, which most people aren’t expecting, making follow up shots guess work at best. That is if they aren’t just shooting randomly at the shooter muzzle flash or towards the people black lit by the bright screen with panicked people trying to run away adding to the target list.

The fantasy that being surprised by a nearby gunshot you’d be able to get up, draw your weapon, identity the shooter and take the shooter down in a crowded theater without endangering others is not based in reality. Plus the bonus of you becoming the target for anyone else with a gun.

In the spirit of the earlier mentioned Charlie Hebdo reenactment, I’d like somebody to take the time to try to experiment with a similar mockup of a modern movie theater. Or even see if a theater chain will rent one for the experiment. Make sure that the true purpose of the experiment isn’t announced, so the movie-goers aren’t prepared for when the “bad guy” begins shooting and the “good guy” fires back. Then see if it’s possible for this supposed scenario where a “good guy” could end the carnage with a single shot to happen. Run the whole thing several times to make sure it isn’t a fluke, with the shooters at different positions and different times in the film.

If you find that there’s a better than 50% chance that the “good guy” can save the day with a single shot without injuring any other moviegoers, then I might lend some credence to the theory. Because as of now, all I see is a shooting gallery and a whole lot of lawsuits for the “good guy” and the theater chain from the families of the deceased.

I don’t remember the man’s name but New York police fired 41 shots at an unarmed man and only hit him 19 times.

First, gun ranges work hard to remove distraction. There are walls between the lanes. There’s nothing beyond the firing line that isn’t target. The lighting is bright, and constant. You are REQUIRED to wear ear protection.

Second, EVEN IF most CCW holders have ‘some training’ - which I doubt - the folks who are saying that are also pushing to remove ANY requirements for training, and even the very permit itself, in favor of allowing ANYONE to carry ANYTIME, ANYWHERE.

A TV host who occasionally had Lafayette theater shooter John Russell Houser on his show says the assailant was a “radical guy.” “He was on from time to time because he was a very radical person with radical views,” Calvin Floyd told NBC News. “He was a Republican and then I would have someone with a real strong Democrat view on.” Floyd also answered “no” when asked if he was surprised that Houser is accused of shooting up the Louisiana movie theater. “The association I had with him was for entertainment,” he said. “He was very entertaining. He made for good TV and when it was over, you would leave shaking your head.” On his LinkedIn page, Houser boasts about being a guest host on the show. “Invited political controversy on every one of them, and loved every minute of it,” he wrote.

That actually brings up a rather brilliant proposal: If one wants to end “gun-free zones,” under the belief that arming people is the best form of defense, then you must at the same time agree that all CCW holders undergo tactical training courses to familiarize them with dealing with armed shooters in real-world situations. Not taking shots at a paper target on a range, but dealing with the level of training we expect of law enforcement. If you can’t pass the course, you can’t carry concealed.

Of course, that proposal would go nowhere, because the gun fetishists would scream that the people doing the evaluations would be “gun grabbers” intent on denying CCW permits to as many people as possible.
