Lafayette Theater Shooter: A Fan of Hitler, Neo-Nazis, and Anti-Government Conspiracy Theories

Another murderous far right extremist
Crime • Views: 70,988

We saw reports on this almost immediately after the awful shootings in Lafayette, Louisiana, but held off until more facts could be ascertained. It’s now quite clear the shooter, John Russell Houser, was yet another angry far right anti-government loon who admired Adolph Hitler, Timothy McVeigh, white power groups, the Westboro Baptist Church and the “scientific racism” of Charles Murray’s “The Bell Curve.”

Houser posted comments at many right wing online forums, including Tea Party Nation and the New York chapter of Greece’s neo-Nazi Golden Dawn. As we’ve pointed out many times, the comments at right wing sites are now dominated by outright hate speech, predictions of violence and racism. How many more Housers are being created in this toxic stew?

There’s more information on his background of right wing extremism here: Lafayette Theater Shooter Fan of Hitler, Neo-Nazis, and Antigovernment Conspiracies.

And according to CNN, there is evidence that Houser’s rampage was not a spontaneous act:

Authorities searching Houser’s hotel room and vehicle found wigs, glasses and other apparent disguises. And he’d swapped out the license plates on his Lincoln Continental, parking it right outside an exit door to the Grand 16.

Yet, while he paused his barrage of bullets to head toward the exits, he never made it to the car.

Two police officers who happened to be at the theater made their way toward where “Trainwreck” was playing, as patrons rushed away from the carnage and their law enforcement colleagues on the outside rushed to get there.

“They heard a shot,” Craft said. “And upon entering the theater, the suspect was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Edmonson said that the gunman got outside, saw police coming, and then returned to kill himself.

The fallout from the Hulk Hogan/Gawker trial has commenced.

WWE terminated its contract with Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan). WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide.

The Hulkster better pray the trial goes his way, since the WWE just shitcanned his ass for what he said on the video. (It’s pretty bad)

Uh so tell me how criminalizing abortion would prevent abortion? You want to play this stupid game, Stevie, I’ll play it too. No gun control won’t prevent tragedies like this but it will decrease them. After Australia had a huge mass shooting in the 90’s, they enacted some strict gun control measures. They haven’t had anything like that since. That’s not a coincidence. Gun control will never 100% prevent tragedies like this from happening but it will cut them down. Fucking hack.

So many of the gun rights folks are convinced that only if there were more people with guns that it would prevent attacks like this.

So, that explains why police were killed in several notable high profile incidents in the past year (they’re good guys with guns, surrounded by other good guys with guns).

It also explains why when police get into shootouts and/or mass casualty incidents, they call on SWAT and ESU - because those are the guys with the tactics and methods to deal with deadly shooting incidents in ways that the beat cops don’t. The old saying in NY is that when you have a problem, you call the NYPD. When the NYPD runs into trouble, they call ESU. That’s what they do - and a bunch of gun humpers who fire at paper targets on the weekend are more of a threat to each other and everyone else around them than professionally trained law enforcement who train and practice these situations on a regular basis (though even that is widely varied depending on the size of the department or need).

Tactical cops like SWAT or ESU train specifically to deal with these situations. They learn to clear rooms, address and classify potential hostiles from civilians, secure rooms, and handle multiple assailants.

Louisiana State Police site:

R.S. 40:1379.3 (N) states that no concealed handgun may be carried into and no concealed handgun permit issued pursuant to this Section shall authorize or entitle a permittee to carry a concealed handgun in any of the following:
A law enforcement office, station, or building;
A detention facility, prison, or jail;
A courthouse or courtroom, provided that a judge may carry such a weapon in his own courtroom;
A polling place;
A meeting place of the governing authority of a political subdivision;
The state capitol building;
Any portion of an airport facility where the carrying of firearms is prohibited under federal law, except that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, if the firearm is encased for shipment, for the purpose of checking such firearm as lawful baggage;
Any church, synagogue, mosque or similar place of worship; See RS 40:1379.3 (U)
A parade or demonstration for which a permit is issued by a governmental entity;
Any portion of the permitted area of an establishment that has been granted a Class A-General retail permit, as defined in Part II of Chapter 1 or Part II of Chapter 2 of Title 26 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950, to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises.
Any school “firearm free zone” as defined in R.S. 14:95.6.

There’s nothing about movie theaters being a gun-free zone (or in this case, a location where a person can bring a concealed weapon).

It would seem that right wing sites have invented this particular detail?

UPDATE:

The establishment itself has its own rules, and appears to have banned firearms from its premises.

This is not a law. It’s the Grand Theaters’ policy:

OUR THEATRE PROHIBITS

• Smoking including e-cigarettes

So right wingers now want to dictate to private companies how they can run their businesses, including demanding the “right” to carry loaded weapons into movie theaters.

No. You have that all wrong.

You can’t impose laws requiring businesses not to discriminate. Therefore, forcing a business that sells cakes to sell a cake to a gay couple is wrong, but you better allow gun carriers on your premises, even though state law allows businesses to set their own policies.

Great idea, bulletproof movie seats. That way the shooter has something to use as protection as he continues his rampage. Wait, I know how we solve that, we make armor-piercing rounds legal for civilians. But wait, then the shooter will have them. Give me a sec, I’m sure we can come up with a way to solve that too…

Here’s where right wingers are getting this “gun-free zone” talking point: thegrandtheatre.com

This is not a law. It’s the Grand Theaters’ policy:

So right wingers now want to dictate to private companies how they can run their businesses, including demanding the “right” to carry loaded weapons into movie theaters.

These people are out of their freaking gourds.

I was just thinking, Louisiana doesn’t seem like the kind of place that would have “gun free” zones, and Bobby Jindal doesn’t seem like the type of Governor that would encourage “gun free” zones.

So in the Free Market World, it is the customer’s choice; if you feel safer in a theater knowing that there are people in the cinema who are armed and ready to defend you in the dark against an unseen assailant, then go to a gun-friendly cinema and ask to be seated next to a Good Guy with a Gun

Seeing isn’t really the issue. It’s hitting your target in a crowded theater where people are panicking due to a gunman. Really go ahead, you probably do know more about guns than me- big fucking deal- you don’t know about the reality of chaotic situations because you think this is a video game where you just pull out your gun and the bad guy is a red dot on the on screen radar and if you inadvertently kill the wrong person, you get to start again when the shooting begins.

Which is laughable. The vast majority of these people’s experiences with guns are in controlled environments. Gun ranges are controlled as hell. Pointed out earlier but you have to wear earphones in the area. A gun range will never prepare you for the reality of a shooting. A soldier will say the same about his combat training, it may help but it won’t ever truly prepare you for reality. Why? Because reality isn’t a controlled scenario. It’s unpredictable.

For all the folks claiming that a good guy with a gun could have stopped the shooter, I’d like to point out a news story from a couple of years ago.

Empire State building shooting

Man shoots his ex-boss, is confronted by police on the street (in daylight, shooter directly in front of the police). Man gets killed by police. NINE bystanders shot by police accidentally during the gunfight.

So: daylight, clear view of shooter, multiple trained “good guys with guns”. Yes the shooter was killed, but nine innocents were shot by the police accidentally. With good light and no panicked crowds.

And we’re supposed to believe an untrained person, in the dark with innocents running in panic could just “drop” the shooter.

It must hurt being that stupid.

Repeat after me:

Lack of empathy is not mental illness; willingness to hurt others is not mental illness. Either, combined with a choice of targets, is not mental illness, it’s just a bullshit ethos.

Anxiety and depression do not, a priori, explain the justification system by which an individual arrives at using violence. At most, they are catalysts for bad decisions. Your inclination to inflict pain hen you’re sad or scared is you being a shit.

If your “delusions” are rote repetition of ideas from media sources, with no novel features, you’re not a delusional schizophrenic. You’re just an asshole and a rube.

If you’re angry and want to physically harm other people so they can understand why you’re angry, then you’re just a controlling fuckwit. And that’s not in the DSM.

Ayep, this plan would have done nothing for those people in Aurora except provide the illusion of safety until Holmes began moving up the rows and firing at the now uncovered targets.

If anything, you’d actually make shootings worse, as now people would be given the false illusion of safety, making them think if they just cower behind the seats, they’ll be safe. All it will do is make gunmen pick higher vantage points or move around the “shield”.
