Image of the Week: A Global Mosaic of Pluto in True Color

The colors in this image of Pluto from the New Horizons spacecraft aren’t simulated or enhanced; they’re the real deal. Very close to what a human eye would see if that person was flying past Pluto at 36,000 miles per hour. They were captured by Ball Aerospace’s Ralph instrument, named after Ralph Kramden in “The Honeymooners.” Yes, really.

Four images from New Horizons’ Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) were combined with color data from the Ralph instrument to create this sharper global view of Pluto. (The lower right edge of Pluto in this view currently lacks high-resolution color coverage.) The images, taken when the spacecraft was 280,000 miles (450,000 kilometers) away from Pluto, show features as small as 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers). That’s twice the resolution of the single-image view captured on July 13 and revealed at the approximate time of New Horizons’ July 14 closest approach.

Ralph’s suite of detectors is fed by a three mirror telescope with a resolution 10 times higher than the human eye. Small but powerful, Ralph weighs only 23 pounds and uses only about seven watts, the power of a standard night light. The entire telescope operates around 220 K (-60°F) in the cold darkness of the outer solar system.

Good question: Pluto is a bit far out from the Sun (to say the least) - one has to wonder if the light level - and/or the detail - has been “enhanced” - by technology - or if the features of the dwarf planet would really look like this to a human astronaut flitting by ; though I’m sure they’d have to look pretty quickly at 38000 kpm (or whatever)…

That was taken when New Horizons was about 2 million kilometers (1.2 million miles) past Pluto, when the tiny rock and ice world was very nearly between the spacecraft and the Sun. New Horizons looked over its shoulder, back at Pluto, to capture this breathtaking picture.

The ring of light you are seeing? That’s Pluto’s atmosphere! Light passing through that cold, thin, nitrogen gas gets scattered, bent, and we see it as a halo surrounding the night side of Pluto.

Unlike the cameras I grew up with, those of the past couple of decades can get images from almost no light. Now and then on TV you’ll see a golf tournament, for one example, where it’s about to be suspended for darkness and the players can’t even see their shots land, but the image on screen looks no worse than a cloudy afternoon.

Science Twitter was abuzz about the new data today. Somewhere in my feed is a comparison photo between Titan and Pluto, photographed the same backlit way, and they’re indistinguishable. One scientist commented that when the back-lit horizon image came in, everybody kind of stopped what they were doing and stared.

There has also been a lot of comparing Pluto to food. For my money, Charon resembles the core of a Jawbreaker after the candy shell is sucked away, and exaggerated-color Pluto reminds me of melting ice cream.

At its warmest, when it is closest to the sun, Pluto can reach temperatures of minus 369 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 223 degrees Celsius). At its coolest, temperatures can fall to minus 387 degrees F (minus 233 C).

Pluto in the unenhanced image even looks cold, cold, cold. Brrrrrr…

Old, white, wrinkled and angry, they are slipping from polite society in alarming numbers. We’re losing much of a generation. They often sport hats or other clothing, some marking their status as veterans, Tea Partyers or “patriots” of some kind or another. They have yellow flags, bumper stickers and an unquenchable rage. They used to be the brave men and women who took on America’s challenges, tackling the ’60s, the Cold War and the Reagan years — but now many are terrified by the idea of slightly more affordable healthcare and a very moderate Democrat in the White House.

We’re losing people like my father to the despair of Fox News, and it’s all by design.

My dad is 67 years old, a full year younger than the average Fox viewer, who is 68, according to an analysis in New York magazine by columnist Frank Rich. I’ve read accounts of people my age — 40 or so — losing parents to cancer or Alzheimer’s, but just as big a tragedy are the crops of grandmothers and grandfathers debilitated by Fox News-induced hysteria.

I enjoyed Fox News for many years, as a libertarian and frequent Republican voter. I used to share many, though not all, of my father’s values, but something happened over the past few years. As I drifted left, the white, Republican right veered into incalculable levels of conservative rage, arriving at their inevitable destination with the creation of the Tea Party movement.

When I finally pulled the handle for Obama in 2012, my father could not believe how far I’d fallen. I have avoided talking politics with him as much as possible ever since. Last week, I invited him to my house for dinner with the express purpose of talking about politics and most especially his Fox News addiction. Since he retired, he only watches Fox. As we started chatting up politics, I repeated one mantra over and over: “Please, please, consume another source of information.” I repeated my plea a dozen times. He defended with stridency his choices, citing his favorites, like Stuart Varney, “The Five” and the great Charles Krauthammer. When it came to any other source of information he was emphatic.

“I don’t care to see any more of that liberal bullshit,” he said in one form or another all night.

We rehashed some issues, starting with his absolute skepticism about global warming and evolution. “Science and religion are the same thing,” he said. And, “We didn’t come from a fucking monkey,” he added like he always does.

In real life Archie Bunker isn’t that cute. If he’s Archie, that makes me either Meat Head or Sallie Struthers (the very definition of lose-lose).

I’m overeducated in the humanities, so I’m an imperfect ambassador for science. I respect scholarship, peer review and the scientific method. When I tell my dad he should believe the experts in climate science, he gets really mad.

“Global warming is your religion,” he says. Because I’m an atheist, calling me religious is the worst insult he can summon, so he uses it often.

My father sincerely believes that science is a political plot, Christians are America’s most persecuted minority and Barack Obama is a full-blown communist. He supports the use of force without question, as long as it’s aimed at foreigners. He thinks liberals are all stupid, ignorant fucks who hate America.

I don’t recall my father being so hostile when I was growing up. He was conservative, to be sure, but conventionally and thoughtfully so. He is a kind and generous man and a good father, but over the past five or 10 years, he’s become so conservative that I can’t even find a label for it.

What has changed? He consumes a daily diet of nothing except Fox News. He has for a decade or more. He has no email account and doesn’t watch sports. He refuses to so much as touch a keyboard and has never been on the Internet, ever. He thinks higher education destroys people, not only because of Fox News, but also because I drifted left during and after graduate school.

I do not blame or condemn my father for his opinions. If you consumed a daily diet of right-wing fury, erroneously labeled “news,” you could very likely end up in the same place. Again, this is all by design. Let’s call it the Fox News effect. Take sweet, kindly senior citizens and feed them a steady stream of demagoguery and repetition, all wrapped in the laughable slogan of “fair and balanced.” Even watching the commercials on Fox, one is treated to sales pitches for gold and emergency food rations, the product cornerstones of the paranoid. To some people the idea of retirees yelling at the television all day may seem funny, but this isn’t a joke. We’re losing the nation’s grandparents, and it’s an American tragedy.

People talk about the imminent “death” of Fox News itself, because of an ever-aging demographic. Again, Frank Rich makes this case, but I think his argument is dubious. Certainly the audience is graying to oblivion, but it’s a cold comfort to those of us who watch our parents or grandparents drown in an incessant downpour of outrage. We will only see the “End of Fox News” when my father and his contemporaries die. I do not want to watch my father and his entire generation spend their remaining years enraged at utter nonsense.

My cohort, Generation X, is stuck between two generations of suffering Americans. The millennial generation is losing job opportunities and income as the nation stagnates. They put off marriage and buying homes. While white, Fox News-addicted baby boomers have lost their sense of hope. They’ve been passed over by shifting attitudes about gay marriage, the role of government and a host of issues. They still think of themselves as the “silent majority,” when in reality they are a wounded and thrashing legacy of white hegemony. My parents’ generation is becoming fragile antiques, relics by choice, reassured by Fox News that they are still the only voice that matters.

I, and people like me, have managed to break the cycle of conservative red-and race-baiting. I’ve noticed similar attitude shifts among some of my close friends, who have likewise drifted from the televised rage of our fathers. I only wish I could do something to ease the anxiety of those I love, an emotion that is a cash cow for exploitative right-wing commentators. But I have no real solution, other than to turn off the television. Sadly, for some of the nation’s elderly, they seem to have no desire whatsoever to rethink the politics of fear and Fox News. It’s a criminal waste of retirement.

The sale of fetal body parts would be banned in Wisconsin and Planned Parenthood could lose millions of dollars in federal funding under bills being circulated by a pair of Republican state representatives.

Reps. Andre Jacque and Joel Kleefisch circulated their proposal banning the sale and use of fetal body parts for co-sponsorship Thursday, with a deadline of Aug. 6. They say the bill is in reaction to recently released videos showing a Planned Parenthood medical director in southern California meeting with people posing as potential buyers of intact fetal specimens.
Federal law prohibits the commercial sale of fetal tissue, but allows not-for-profit donation of tissue with the consent of the woman who had an abortion. Planned Parenthood contends that the payments discussed in the videos pertain to reimbursement for the costs of procuring the tissue, which is legal.

Late crowd?

So gun control… As it so happens I got an update from a guy tonight who is a licensed gun dealer. Always been a reliable source for how gun laws work out at retail. The details can surprise even the well informed.

California has passed a great sounding gun control law or two that effectively become a slow moving new handgun ban. It’s terribly detailed, but in the first phase California passed a mfg. safety test protocol where every model of handgun has to be physically tested to destruction and even tiny modifications force a reset, or full resubmission. At considerable expense in fees. Okay so that limited the selection for purchase to those submitted/re/re re submitted models. And that stands at only about 300 models as of 1/1/2016. Guessing maybe a tenth of the real national handgun market?

Phase 2, (not to imply conspiracy just to clearly timeline) some years later a law is passed saying all new guns gotta have microstamp technology in two locations internally. Firing pin and (?) imprints the brass cartridge. Legibly, uniquely. This technology does not exist. If it did it would be easy to beat in court or in a machine shop. As time passes we get a near complete new handgun ban. Unless you have a badge of course. So what is the ordinary target shooter guy to make of all this? Buy while you can maybe? Make a play for the second hand market later, buy a pistol a month while they are still available? Or just sell em all and take up stamp collecting? But wait a ban won’t stand… or will it given the boil a frog slowly methodology. If not methodology, fair to say result then.

Of course the second hand market is not yet affected. That would all go through our state universal registration requirement. FFL, waiting period, b/g check.

Anyway all this submitted tonight for informing not debating the merits of the above. California gets it right in important ways, I respect that. It’s an example for other states in a good way overall.

Police in west Sweden arrested two people on Tuesday following raids on a car and two apartments in the town of Falkenberg, which led to the discovery of the potentially deadly explosives.

Sweden Democrats (SD) is roughly the local equivalent of the Tea Party.

Further to above post: I have a friend who is, admittedly, a bit of a gun nut. Not a mouthfrothing NRA stooge, but a guy who likes guns, likes shooting, likes hunting, and acquired some nice ones when he had a contract gig that paid pretty well.

Then he got sick - REALLY sick - and because he was a sole proprietor, lost that contract and most of his savings. But he had those guns. One in particular, a really pretty Colt Python, .357 Magnum, 6” barrel, beautiful blued steel. Worth hundreds of dollars.

I would have been willing to buy it at his asking price, but he couldn’t legally sell it to me, even though we both are legally allowed to own handguns in CA. Why? Because it isn’t on The List. Colt didn’t test a blued .357 Python with 6” barrel. They tested one with a 4” barrel.

He had to sell it out of state.

I jumped up to see that Buddy the dog had peed on my bed! The little fucker!

I knew what it was about though he has NEVER done anything that rude before to express his displeasure. He’s jealous of Mo. My dog is jealous of a fucking fish. He apparently decided that doggy body slamming me and whacking me with toys when I’m playing with Mo has been inadequate.

There is a large pile of bedding laundry on my sofa that I so don’t feel like dragging up to the laundry room. The little fucker.

Drama at the home front this morning. There is a fawn stuck in my wrought iron fence. He has his front legs through to the other side (the wooded area) where his mother is close by. But he cant get his hip area though.

I dont know how he got inside the fence, but he probably got in sometime overnight. I tired to coax him out, but he doesn’t get “back up”.

Tried to throw a blanket over his back legs, so he couldn’t kick the shit out of me, and pull him out. That didn’t work as he struggled and screamed and screeched like a sacrificial lamb. Mama was ready to jump the fence and attack me.

So now I am back in the house after opening all the gates to the fenced area (3 of them) hoping Mama will come in and get him out somehow.

Mr blue is out. Maybe when he gets home…together we can get him out.

It is not so hot right now, but expect to get up to near 100 today.

Do you have a rope you can tie his back legs together with? Loosely, but tight enough to protect yourself while you pull back on his hips to free him. Another person in front to distract both fawn and mom while the little guy is secured and then to push while you pull would help.

I very much doubt it. Trump’s a lot like a lot of the TP wave that got elected in 2010 on pure anger except he’s running for the highest office in the land. The others frankly are more maddening since they do most of them being trained lawyers and having been in elected office have some understanding of how government works pander to the lowest common denominator. I actually find myself more frustrated with someone like Cruz or Jindal, two intelligent enough guys who play the stupid card.

We had this happen twice in Texas. A fawn will bash itself against a fence(chainlink is my situation) like a pinball knocking around a fast table. So it probably just bashed itself in. It’s pretty brutal to watch.

Both times I had to either open all the gates or remove a section of the fence and just go away. They were gone within an hour.

Well I’d have to do a little math but 110v is inefficient. I suspect one could equip much better in a garage/small shop there than here without extra service added. What might drive this home (pun intended) is people looking to fast cycle charge electric cars. Once diesel fades off over there anyway. :-)

It’s a sizable bill to bring 220v fast charging to a home and problematic at a flat or apartment. 400? Probably banned in most residential applications.

Oh, we have deer everywhere here, but they rarely venture inside the fence.
Also, as we have had pretty decent rain this year, the food supply is pretty good. Lots of vegetation around. I do have a vegetable garden inside the fence. Maybe he came in for that. Who knows?

What might drive this home (pun intended) is people looking to fast cycle charge electric cars. Once diesel fades off over there anyway. :-)

It’s a sizable bill to bring 220v fast charging to a home and problematic at a flat or apartment. 400? Probably banned in most residential applications.

From memory, the higher mains frequency means marginally higher losses in the transmission network, and you do have significantly higher reactive and resistive losses in cabling for 120V.

Like, where us €-trash have 10, 13 and 16 A circuits, you have 20, 26 and 32 A ones. Lights blinking due to loads is rare unless you’re talking 1000W+ ones. It’s the resistive losses which cause the lights to blink, especially during switch-on. A higher current capability also means more potential damage in case of a fault.

And I think that 235/400V might be legal, tho I doubt many places have the 3-phase infrastructure in place. However, I would think that anything except fixed installations would be problematic, as well as anything above 400V (for example you don’t play around with 480 or 560V).
