Rand Paul Pushing to Defund Planned Parenthood and Subvert Mitch McConnell
Rand Paul likes to present himself as a civil libertarian, but his stance on reproductive rights is straight from the darkest, most regressive part of the Republican Party’s war on women. He’s currently pushing to defund Planned Parenthood with an amendment to a mass transit funding bill, despite Mitch McConnell’s block:
“I’m going to try to force a vote on this. I think the time is now to discuss whether taxpayer dollars should be going to such a gruesome procedure,” Paul said on “Fox News Sunday.”
“People are outraged by this and I think the American people deserve to have a vote on it,” Paul said.
The Kentucky lawmaker said he was pursuing several strategies to defund the group, including a “discharge petition” requiring the support of at least 16 other senators.
Several Republican senators have accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) of blocking a vote to defund Planned Parenthood.
