US News • Views: 67,316

After serving 30 years in prison for a life sentence, convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard will be paroled in November.

WASHINGTON—A federal panel has granted parole to Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, with a planned release in November, his attorneys said Tuesday.

The announcement said the decision by the parole commission was unanimous and wasn’t in any way related to U.S. negotiations with Iran.

His release does not hurt the US. It gets expensive to keep older people in prison. I say goodbye to him.

I’m curious to see how Kristol, Krauthammer, et al respond to this. After weeks of screaming about how the Iran deal will lead to the extermination of life on earth, are they going to applaud the release of a traitor who tried to hook up Iran?

Who am I kidding? Being a neoconservative means never having to show a nanogram of shame.

He doesn’t even need to have an accident. Once he stops being a useful show pony, his accomodations will be downgraded, and he’ll have a hell of a time finding a job.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought that Bibi has long lobbied to have Pollard released. That doesn’t make much sense if you believe (as I do) that Iran represents at least some threat to Israel through proxies like Hezbollah.

lawhawk  Jul 28, 2015 • 12:45:37pm

Years back, I got harangued by one of his relatives who was convinced he was railroaded and that he should have been released because he did nothing wrong. And then proceeded to excuse the theft of classified information by saying that he was only doing so on behalf of an ally or that he was railroaded by a bunch of anti-Semites at State - in particular Caspar Weinberger.

Thing is that he entered guilty plea on providing classified information to foreign government (Israel). He admits to stealing classified information.

And it doesn’t matter that he was spying for a friendly nation. He spied for a foreign nation and passed on classified documents to those not authorized to get it.

That he’s now going to be paroled at around the same time as the Iran deal is heading to the Hill is, well, interesting timing.

Israel definitely wants him. They want to love him and cuddle him and name him George. The bulk of Israelis view him has a national hero who sacrificed greatly for their nation. However they aren’t going to get him for another five years.

According to the WSJ’s report, the terms of parole will keep Pollard in the US for another five years under the supervision of the federal government.

Chelsea, AFAIK, has acknowledged wrongdoing and accepted her punishment, so I’m inclined to agree, or at least FAR more inclined than for Snowden. Still, the crime was a serious one for someone in uniform, especially in an all-volunteer military.

Now on to something that matters (half ///). Pucifer released a new video. New album due in October. The visuals in this are amazing. And Maynard’s vocals really show off his range. He’s boss, for sure.

Tell us the one about the talking dog, granpa.

1. AFAICT, it’s standard procedure for (even) convicted spies to be eligible for parole after serving thirty years (even on “life” sentences).

2. Pollard has indeed served thirty years in slam: it’s not like he’s “getting away easy”, or whatevs…

3. As long as he doesn’t get another job with any significant national-security-information exposure (kinda doubtful, ya think?) who cares?

I think he’s burned his security clearance. I’m afraid the book is a guaranteed best seller.

31
lawhawk  Jul 28, 2015 • 12:53:15pm

Other reasons to question Pollard’s intention was that he was willing to meet and broker sales of classified data with Pakistanis and Iranians. And that he was looking to profit from the sales, not merely altruistic behavior. He ultimately found common cause with an Israeli handler who ran his op.

The case also highlights just how badly prospective workers in the CIA and other DoD agencies were vetted (and probably still are - as the Snowden episode shows). There should have been enough red flags to keep him from any sensitive information, but he still managed to get his hands on all manner of classified info.

He should have been fired for lying about his background, but was instead transferred out of one group, and into another one.

32
goddamnedfrank  Jul 28, 2015 • 12:53:46pm

I don’t really have a problem with Pollard’s release at this point, thirty years is a long goddamned stretch to serve. Nor, in spite of my opinions of Netanyahu’s government, do I have a problem with Israelis viewing him as a hero. That makes perfect sense from their point of view. This is how the game is played, they’ve always been in an tenuous position and it’s natural to expect them to seek out any advantage they’re capable of exploiting.

The WH doesn’t think much of the petition to pardon Snowden:

Monaco argued Snowden should come back to the U.S. to be judged by a jury of his peers, rather than hiding behind “the cover of an authoritarian regime.”

“Right now, he’s running away from the consequences of his actions,” she said.

Israel’s spy was caught. Israel’s spy did his time. He’s their spy (and hero). He’s our traitor/convicted felon for passing classified info to a foreign country.

He’s done 30 years. That’s hardly insignificant punishment. That’s a long time behind bars, and is far more than the prosecutor’s sentencing recommendations made at the time of the plea deal.

Is Netanyahu REALLY that pissed off, or is he blowing smoke? Sometimes I wonder. It’s not like Israel is against taking matters into its own hands when it comes to a perceived nuclear threat (Iraq, 1981), so why haven’t they this time?

I wonder if Iran is a useful boogeyman to try to keep Israelis voting Likud and to try to push the settlements question into the background. Certainly, Bibi’s GOP soulmates love having boogeyman (gays, Muslims, Mexican immigrants) around to raise hysteria over while they cut capital gains taxes and try to eliminate Medicaid.

He’s definitely used Iran to force his own view upon Israeli national politics, but he also very much would have benefitted from scuttling the deal before it was finalized. Now his only hope is persuading a supermajority of our Congress to kill it, a long shot at best.

Iran is a nation of 80 million and an army of 1 million. During the Iran/Iraq war, Iran lost 750,000. Israel’s high-tech military is unequipped for a war of attrition over years, if not months. Add the fact that Iran is perfectly suited for guerilla war-it’s a mountainous nation with plenty of places of hide. Add the logistical issues regarding resupply, and Israel would rather say no.

Good question. Maybe this is standard procedure, but the crime for which he served time is hard to repeat. He won’t be able to get a job in any branch of security, let alone one where he has access to classified information. Any contacts he had are now dead, retired or reassigned, and he after 30 years has nothing to give them anyway.

Indeed, being convicted of something this big makes it hard for him to get any job, let alone anything that could use his skills. So why not just let Israel have him and pay his freight? Yes, the ticker tape parade may be hard to bear, but nobody will pay attention after the first week.

Netanyahu also has to deal with an enormous amount of economic dissatisfaction at home, especially with regards to the cost of housing. Israel can’t sustain the international trade consequences of a protracted war, even if it could do so militarily. More to the point nobody, neither them nor us, is in a position politically to put boots on the ground in Iran. Every single plan involves bombing hardened targets, going home, hoping we got them all and that the radiation from exploding fueled facilities doesn’t spread very far. The uncertainty really revolves around that last bit, because the literal and figurative fallout could be enormous.

It would be easy to spirit Pollard out of the country before his five years are up, especially if US authorities are not especially eager to prevent it. Bibi and his gang could play this up as another spectacular Israeli special ops coup, with tremendous propaganda value. Once in Israel, he would be feted and lionized by Bibi and the media. MPs call for ‘anti-Muslim paramilitary manual’ website to be investigated

A group of MPs have called for an investigation into a far-right website described as a training manual for anti-Muslim paramilitaries - amid fears that an upcoming exhibition of cartoons of the prophet Muhammad in London is designed to incite Islamist violence.

The Gates of Vienna website has been heavily promoting the exhibition , which is understood to feature the same drawings shown in Texas in May when two gunmen attempted to storm the event and were killed by police.

It has been organised by the former Ukip parliamentary candidate Anne-Marie Waters and is set to take place at a location in central London on 18 September with tickets priced at £35. Organisers say among those attending will be Geert Wilders, the Dutch rightwing politician who has espoused controversial views on Islam. […]

Wilders was also present at the exhibition of the cartoons in Texas, which was run by the anti-Islam American Freedom Defense Initiative and hosted by the group’s co-founder, Pamela Geller, a US blogger and speaker who is banned from entering the UK over her anti-Muslim views. […]

THIS. They don’t give a hairy rat’s ass about free speech, and they certainly don’t care who dies on either side. They’re bigoted right-wing thugs who want to make a grab for power, just like the Islamists they claim to hate.

I won’t waste any sympathy on the trail of dead idiots Pam has left behind her, but it is only a matter of time before an innocent person is killed in an attack on one of these hate fests: A bystander, a peaceful demonstrator, a police officer doing his or her duty, or a venue employee. This isn’t Afghanistan as you mentioned. Iranian intelligence is competent, they can assasinate people around the world and the Iranian military will almost certainly retaliate directly against Israel with ballistic weapons and possibly attacks on Israeli warships.

Regarding the dentist who killed the lion, I had a couple thoughts.
First, AFAICT, African Lions are not an Endangered Species. They are under threat, no doubt about that. But their numbers are sufficiently great that they have not yet qualified as such.

Second, AFAICT, the hunt was legal. He didn’t poach him.

Third, a lot of African countries, and for that matter US states, get revenues from foreign/out of state hunters, which they don’t then have to extract from their own citizenry.

Fourth, I am not a fan of trophy hunting, though I do support, and used to engage in, sport hunting. Varmints and meat, as well as population control where necessary I’m cool with and would in fact participate in if I lived near any good hunting grounds. If you eat meat, I think it’s difficult to come up with a cogent argument that meat hunting is somehow worse.

Trophy hunting, however, leaves me cold. I can admire a beautiful mounted elk, knowing that it was eaten, not wasted. But to kill as a sport something you don’t eat, just for the experience? Nah.

OTOH, if the population of a particular species in a particular area endangers their health or the health of the habitat in general, and the species is not endangered, then I see no reason why the state should not open the area to controlled, regulated hunting. It’s a revenue stream instead of a cost, and a hunter’s bullet kills just as dead as a sharpshooter’s bullet.

Fifth, given how most Americans feel about trophy hunting, the dentist should not be surprised at the backlash. Just because something’s legal doesn’t mean everyone’s cool with it.

Second, AFAICT, the hunt was legal. He didn’t poach him.

It appears they used bait to lure the animal out of the preserve and based on that there is a case to be made that they were poaching. Further they used a bow to kill the lion so that it was a silent kill. Apparently using a bow is common practice for poachers so they do not draw attention to themselves.

I used to hunt (still would like to) and do fish. I do not get the thrill of trophy/sport hunting. If you can’t/won’t eat it and it’s not a threat to you then why kill it?

Second, AFAICT, the hunt was legal. He didn’t poach him.

It appears that he did indeed poach, since his “expert guides” tied a dead animal to a vehicle, lured Cecil out of the preserve to a baited/scented area of a farm where the owner (one of the “experts”) did not have a permit for hunting.
To make matters worse, the dentist shot him with a bow, didn’t kill him, then spent 40 hours tracking him before finally shooting him. Then, they all suddenly “notice” that very obvious tracking collar on Cecil and attempt to destroy it; skin and behead the lion and leave the carcass.

The dentist is an asshole.

Hence ‘AFAICT’. Different facts would put it in a different light.

Note, however, that baiting is legal in many places, for a number of species. Many hunters sneer at it, some see it as perfectly acceptable in all cases, and others see it as a sliding scale - perfectly acceptable for meat and population control hunts, but taints a big trophy.

There’s also the fact that authorities were initially told that the hunter was Spanish, which gave the dentist plenty of time to get out of the country with Cecil’s head and skin.
The fact that they tried to destroy the collar is all I have to know about how legitimate the hunt was. They knew they were in deep, deep trouble.

Sometimes I wonder if the monarchs themselves really want a restoration. For one thing, when they lost their thrones, politics and economics were less complicated. A nation with nothing much more than farms was and is easier than running a modern nation with all of its complexity. You could run things with a pretty modest education. These days, you need to be sharp and near-genius level to be a successful President or Prime Minister.

Also, being off the throne means royals are freer to pursue their own interests-personal or political without worrying about the effects of doing so. A son of an overthrown king can be doctor, dentist, or diviner if politics isn’t his thing.

And lets not forget that being overthrown in a revolution means that there were some pretty hard feelings about the monarchy to begin with. Want to start over and try to win those folks over?

“Uneasy rests the head…” and all that.

Seriously, though - can you imagine how dangerous a life it would be, as a re-established monarch in a country that has been without for decades? From where do you derive your just consent to govern? The only reason they might want you back is that the guys who replaced you were really bad, and you’d have a real short period to prove you weren’t just as big an asshole.

I took the day off work, since I woke up at 4 AM feeling distinctly rumbly in the tumbly, and figured discretion is the better part of valor.

As the temperature rises here on the Peninsula, and with it the temperature in our non-air-conditioned house, I find myself wondering whether I made the wrong choice, especially since all seems well with my middle at the moment.

It’s supposed to reach 88 here today. Yeesh.

Maybe we should give him to the Vatican. That fits right in with some of their procedures.

Mark Meadows was born in Verdun, France. Pass it on.

I wonder what it’s like to know you were born in the middle of a gigantic cemetery?
The horrible thing about the 9 month long Battle of Verdun is that it was fought in a really small area, much smaller typically than other modern battles of similar magnitude. The entire battlefield is visible from the roof of the Verdun Ossuary, a huge facility built in the 20s to hold the remains of soldiers killed in the battle. At least 300,000 French and German soldiers died in the battle and it is possible there were many more than that. The battle area is now a national forest. Access is still restricted because of unexploded ordnance that occasionally works its way out of the visibly shell-torn ground. That isn’t all that works its way out of the forest either: Rangers still find human remains in the area almost every week.

Btw, I was in a jug band with a darn good banjoist throughout the seventies, though I never played it myself. But I did step on a mandolin once. Pretty much anything that is primarily a forum is blocked. Though there are other places or links that are forums that work. It’s sort of weird. I’ve also seen the filters “loosen up” a few weeks after they do an update. Probably in response to people needing access to certain sites or types of sites.

I could probably also get here via a proxy server, but that might raise other flags. For now I have to just do a lot of catch-up reading in the evening. Something to do while I scan slides or crop photos.

I really like the new layout changes; the wider main column is much easier to read. I wonder though (not a coder so I have no idea if such a thing is possible or feasible), would it be possible to have the second column scroll separately from the main page? What I mean is that, even though you scroll down the page on the main column, the featured/recent pages would move down with you and have their own scroll-ability? I’m not sure I’m explaining it well but I hope you know what I mean.

There’s also an article out there about him being sexual harasser.

Dr. Walter Palmer, the Minnesota dentist who hunted and killed a famed lion in Zimbabwe in early July, sparking international outrage, paid a fine in 2009 to settle a sexual harassment claim made against him by a former employee.

The employee, who was also a patient, filed the claim with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry. Palmer settled it with a corrective action. Read the documents from the case below:

Speaking of old skeletons, this happened in Kentucky last week:
Franklin coroner: Human skull found in sinkhole 1,000 to 3,000 years old

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - The Franklin County Coroner says a human skull found earlier this week in a sinkhole was of Native American origin.

Franklin County William Harrod said they had determined the skull was Native American, “indigenous to this area” and dating back approximately between 1,000 to 3,000 years.

On Tuesday, a farm worker discovered the skull, about 12 feet deep, in a sinkhole on Jones Lane, just outside of Frankfort. Officials confirmed it was a human skull. At the time, Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton said the skull may have been down in the hole for years, but they could not make an accurate estimate on time until they were able to dig it out.

Harrod said the Franklin County Coroner’s Office has suspended investigation efforts in relation to this case. He said his office would be working closely with the Kentucky Heritage Council and the State Historical Preservation Office on a combined re-interment effort on the original site.

bolded part shows there is respect for the remains.

re: #113 Blind Frog Belly White

This dentist is no angel:

According to a profile on his business website, Palmer is from North Dakota and graduated from the University of Minnesota dental school. He is married with two children.

He practices general and cosmetic dentistry in Bloomington. His office was closed Tuesday and a note on the building referred visitors to a Minneapolis public relations firm.

Palmer pleaded guilty to federal charges in 2008 related to the poaching of a black bear in Wisconsin two years earlier. Palmer and others transported the bear, which was killed 40 miles outside of a legal hunting zone, to a registration station inside the legal area. Palmer was sentenced to one year of probation and fined nearly $3,000.

In the spring of 2003, Palmer was convicted in Otter Tail County in western Minnesota and paid a small fine for fishing without a license, a misdemeanor.

Palmer is listed as a member of the trophy hunting organization Safari Club International. His profile on SCI’s website lists 43 kills, including caribou, moose, deer, buffalo, a polar bear and mountain lion.

State records show Palmer has held hunting and fishing licenses in Minnesota, Florida and Alaska.

In a 2009 article on big-game hunting, the New York Times reported that Palmer killed a near-record sized elk with a bow and arrow in Northern California.

Palmer told the Times that he can hit a playing card from 100 yards with his compound bow and he eschews bringing a firearm on hunting trips as a backup.

Palmer reportedly paid more than $54,000 for the hunting trip to Zimbabwe.
A neighbor described Palmer and his wife as very private.

In 2009, Palmer agreed to a settlement with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry over allegations that he sexually harassed a receptionist. She alleged that Palmer made comments about her breasts, buttocks and genitalia. Without admitting guilt, Palmer settled and paid $127,500 to the woman, who also was his patient. The settlement included references to his bear-hunting conviction and “substandard record keeping.”

If there is one form of life lower than a politician it’s a trophy hunter.

Good point. The essential intrusiveness of an abortion ban, even if there is a life of the mother exception, become very apparent once ‘life of the mother’ has to be legally codified.

I’ve hunted feral hogs on the Central Coast. It’s becoming a big business in CA, because the hogs are more adaptable than the native Blacktail Deer, plus they’re destructive little bastards. And some of them aren’t little at all. I have a boar skull from a friend of mine, who had shot the obviously sick and distressed animal in his usual hunting area. The skull itself is about 18” long, with tusks that extend 5” above the jawline top and bottom. One of his hunting buddies had gone into a patch of brush after one, and got a really nasty slice from another boar.

The Trump phenomenon perfectly represents the culmination of populism and anti-intellectualism that became dominant in the Republican Party with the rise of the Tea Party. I think many Republican leaders have had deep misgivings about the Tea Party since the beginning, but the short-term benefits were too great to resist. A Trump rout is Republican moderates’ best chance to take back the GOP

The Republican Party historically has been the party of the economic elite. There’s much truth in the old joke is that Republicans could never understand why they lost an election because all their friends at the country club voted Republican. The conservative movement, by contrast, largely consisted of small businessmen and country folk suspicious of anything that came out of the big city. The GOP and the conservative movement have always been uncomfortable allies.

Although the far right’s mythology paints the Reagan years as the triumph of their ideas, the truth is that he governed very much in the moderate tradition of postwar Republican presidents. Reagan raised taxes 11 times, gave amnesty to illegal aliens, pulled American troops out of the Middle East, supported environmental regulations, raised the debt limit and appointed many moderates to key positions, including on the Supreme Court. But he skillfully kept his right flank protected by using thundering conservative rhetoric, even as he violated his own stated principles on a regular basis.

I’m trying to figure out how to do an entire wall.

So, those hang in the air, see through screens are all the rage on the procedural cop dramas on TV, but could you imagine using one?

I think they would work as long as you could make them opaque. But I’m also imagining up against a wall in my office. They would have to be touch screen.

As a programmer, I’m starting to think about creating programming languages that use visual constructs. A bit like UML, though more like zooming in and out for detail. For example, a state machine would consist of states and lines, which could be encapsulated in a class. You would need a lot of screen real estate for that.

I wonder if that slapnut thinks banning guns will stop murders. Wingnut cognitive dissonance is a full-time job. Leaves them no time to actually use their brains to think.

Thanks to Alouette and her wading into the TCOT sewer today, we can safely conclude that “pro-life anti-abortion” stances are inherently misogynist. KEPP YER LEGS CLOSED! JUST DON’T FUCK YOU STUPID SLUT! Any mention of men keeping their dicks in their pants? Not a one. Telling.

All these friggin widescreen monitors these days, we’ll be lucky if it doesn’t end up scrolling sideways.

And you’ll have to dodge bats and thrown objects as you scroll through the comments. But you also get to jump on mushrooms and turtles!

This dentist is no angel:

If there is one form of life lower than a politician it’s a trophy hunter.

This story makes me physically sick to my stomach. And raises bile in my throat.
This shitbag needs to have a broadhead stuck thru him and then be dumped in a ISIS stronghold so he can run for a few days before the catch him and cut the fuckers head off.

Sorry…. Pissed to high heaven about this.

Good God. A recommendation from the John Birch Society is like a dog whistle that only paleoconservatives can hear, the kind you thought were either
1) extinct
2) members of the John Birch Society
3) catching early bird specials in St. Pete’s Beach
4) Pat Buchanan
