And in one fell swoop Trump wraps up a few tens of thousands more wingnut votes. As someone here so sagely observed, Trump is conservatism. The belated media effort to prove that he’s an asshole may help him. If he can attain martyr status shortly before the first primary then his competitors better bring their A game.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Rumsfeld a copy of everything that passed through his hands while he was SecDef.

It’s worth noting that the memo is dated March 16th, 2001 i.e. before 9/11. So Rumsfeld felt that way even before concern for intelligence collection ramped up after the terror attacks. It proves consistency, and on this I think he’s right. Pollard should not be released.

Gross description of a hunting trip under this button.

Fun fact: I helped field dress a black bear right outside the Steamboat ski area a mere three months after I moved to Steamboat Springs. I was 20. My friend gave me a knife and told me to slice from the bear’s throat and just cut straight down through the chest until our knives meet (he started from the butt hole, and he fed me breakfast and plenty of weed, so…).

He shot that black bear legally, and it was a lucky fuckin’ shot. Went into the back of his (yes, it was a he) ear and went out his jaw, killed pretty much instantly. We found him upright with one of his paws resting around a tree. He tumbled a good 20 yards downhill and we found him in this, uh, serene position.

We cut him in half, skinned ‘em and hauled him out, took two days. The grossest part was shaving the fat off the meat. And you should have seen the faces of the ladies that were walking up the trail as we were walking down with a bear carcass in two pieces. I’ll never forget those two days.

We ate him and my friend has a tanned bear rug.

One of the most vivid memories of mine living in the mountains.

My opinion of the LGF redesign: It’s a very smooth and pleasing design, simple and elegant. LGF is moving forward. So cool. Charles is the man!

He writes the front end and back end code for this site. Every site you go to has some sort of standard code (Disqus, WordPress, whatever) and that simply doesn’t exist here at LGF. It’s unique here, and it looks good on a computer screen.

I also love Johnny Rivers. The only time I saw him was in the early seventies, when he opened for Deep Purple and the headliners, The Guess Who. The Purple were great (like me, a lot of the audience didn’t stay around for the Guess Who), but Rivers and his band was what everybody talked about for weeks after that show. Some old farts like me still do.

Time counts and keeps countin’, and we knows now finding the trick of what’s been and lost ain’t no easy ride. But that’s our trek, we gotta’ travel it.

Had an interview today at a local health care nonprofit. IT — Helpdesk Technician. It went very well although I really didn’t have any questions during the “Do you have any questions for us” stage. Felt awkward. I remembered the one I was going to ask — “I noticed on your linkedin profile you’ve worked here 15 years, what exactly about this company keeps you here?”

I tried not to get my hopes up but they did ask me if I could start immediately and started mentioning benefits et all. (Not only is it good insurance, since it’s for a company that runs clinics across the valley you get an employee discount, too.) They also mentioned I was one of the last interviews and that they’d tell me tomorrow.

The only worry is that I still don’t drive, and they pretty blatantly said that driving would be required, even though it wasn’t on the job posting. I did check and I definitely put on the application that I don’t drive, so… Yeah. That’s going to require some charisma to overcome, and frankly I’m not a very charismatic person.

I have a few work from home tech support backup considerations, including one at Xerox, so if I have to I have options.

I guess tomorrow I’ll be running down and getting my Written test done so I can practice driving over the next few days, with any luck I can take my driving test this weekend / early next week.

I also made it down to the old job and turned in my uniforms. 6 pairs of pants, 3 shirts, they seemed to think I had 7 and 4. The lady was nice enough to write those off for me though saying that the previous garment team didn’t keep good records.

Got my final check. $1260. So that’ll keep me in the running for another 2-3 months at least.

Didn’t run into my old boss / supervisor. Didn’t want to risk being accused of trespass to go visit them, so I just left the building and went home.

She was a couple quarters behind me in the MS coursework and called me up after I’d finished asking if I’d give her some of my old assignment papers. Yeah. None of the others from my program who abandoned the MS for the MFA ever saw her in any of those classes. The MFA was a longer program, but the thesis requirement was comparatively super easy. The school, of course, has zero record of her ever having a graduate thesis show. She just decided many years later that nobody would notice if she invented this utter bullshit, being very careful not to mention a graduating year or thesis project.

Just irritating because Jesus why can’t she buy some fucking integrity with all that inherited money? Goddamned ridiculous clownshoes pseudo socialite.

Meanwhile here in Milwaukee, the whole northwest side of town has been chasing a ghost lion all week that has apparently been sighted multiple times yet cannot be confirmed.

Latest step in lion search: live traps with ‘people food’

And so it has come to this: a mix of turkey, chicken, summer sausage and McNuggets — bait for the first live traps put out Tuesday evening for the lion-like animal that has evaded capture for more than a week.

While the possibility of a roving wild mountain lion hasn’t been ruled out, it’s more likely that the creature — the subject of 14 claimed sightings by the public over the weekend alone — is an escaped or released exotic urban pet, said Karen Sparapani, executive director of the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission.

“A wild animal would’ve left Dodge a long time ago,” she said. “There’s really nothing here: no quiet, there’s no mates, and there’s not really the free range and the privacy they like. If it was a wild animal, the thinking is it would not have enjoyed its stay and moved on. This one doesn’t know where to go.”

I always really enjoyed hunting rabbits as a kid with my parents beagle. Part of the joy was just watching the dog. I really enjoyed hunting whitetails as well, except for poking their guts out, and I was the only person in the house that would eat the venison, so I don’t hunt anymore.

The default assumption of modern conservatism is that life is a movie, and they are the stars. Everyone wants to join their revolution, all their shots hit the target, and all their opponents are Biff Tannen. The generic rock soundtrack that played in Dylann Roof’s head is the same one that runs through Trump’s, Walker’s, O’Reilly’s, and Wee Chuckie’s.

Most hunting around here involves sitting in a tree stand until a deer/turkey comes near you and trying to shoot it with a shotgun, muzzleloader, or a bow and arrow. If you have money, you also have hunting dogs that chase the deer towards you.

So, yeah, not a lot of stalking going on.

Always have found stand hunting a bore. I prefer a variation of stalking called still hunting. Walk a bit, pause to observe for sign, and try to circle into where the game is feeding. Once located, then a stalk or, if the animal is moving and the wind is favorable, standing still in the grass or near a tree.

Because of the idealized ‘history’ that they think they know. The hear revolutionary war and think - well, we did for king George when he pissed us off, there’s no difference if the elected government of the U.S. pisses us off.

My British BiL posted an interesting interview of students from other countries and what they thought of the (in their words) War for American Independence; they do not refer to it as a revolutionary war. A large number of countries just note it as a passing part of the overall reformation. Others note it as an example for the French Revolution, which they actually did study. But, by and large, it was just a nominal blip in course of human history.

“This all reminds me of a course I took in college on heresy. I remember learning about how multiple times throughout human history, various groups of people have been accused of the very specific act of gathering together and hosting orgies, and then taking the resulting babies from any past orgies and burning them into ashes, which are then formed into cakes, which are then eaten. Usually it’s supposed to be the Jews doing this but plenty of other marginalized groups have been accused as well. And it always baffled me to think that people could really, truly believe that their fellow humans were doing something so obviously stupid and made up.

Well, now it’s 2015 and an organization that is mostly responsible for making sure poor women have access to basic medical care including cancer screenings, checkups, and birth control, are accused of convincing women to abort their babies and then tearing them into parts and selling them on the black market.”

This is pretty great.

For our sins, Fox news has added a second (earlier) debate. It will give the lowest of the low a one-hour shot at 5 PM, before the main event.

politico.com

Great. Now the whole second, later, debate will consist of Donald yapping about how great he is because he’s in the second, later, debate of Winners.

3% of all Planned Parenthood’s activities are abortions, and more than 90% of those are in the first trimester when it’s about size of a kidney bean, so they do see some pieces of fetal tissue. Which are just going to be thrown away in the garbage, but which the patient can instead choose to donate to important medical research.

Planned Parenthood throws babies and baby parts in the garbage!!!! Here is video Proofs!!!11

It’s like the peanuts they give you on airplanes. You’d never eat that crap on the ground, but in the air, crammed into a too small seat, any scrap feels like valuable.

No cable etc?

Gotta admit I’m looking at the more advanced smart TV’s with an eye to ending my Time Warner cable. We actually watch so little. Gee, north of 30,000 comments so I guess very little. But now shows that we do watch are streaming. Science, nature, actual news. Got that monitor hooked up to the PC as a secondary monitor. I think for about $25 to streaming services a month. we can get 90% of what we do watch. Oddly enough I can’t catch a good broadcast signal for local. Not sure why but even the rooftop sucks.

I’m still awaiting a good explanation of why the deal is so bad when you apply the math.

The ad says that the deal runs 10 years, but once it expired, Iran would have a nuclear weapons capacity within 2 months. That’s 10 years+ 2 months. 122 months.

Without the deal, Bibi and others say that Iran could have a nuclear weapon within months. Yes, I know Bibi has been saying months for the past 24 years, but say that he’s right this time.

Matter of months < 122 months.

How again is no deal worse than the supposedly bad deal?

Morning folks.

I don’t know about all of you, but I am sick of our crappy media giving all this coverage to complete assholes like Trump and Huckabee. All this is going to do is reward crappy behavior and make the other candidates start to act out too.

Well, not start to act out, just increase it to be as unbearable as the others.

And Trump…has he ever gotten past being 17? His whole being is self-serving rich-kid that has never been told to shut up and act like a real human. I always wondered about the guy, but now with him all over everywhere in the media there is no more wondering. It is confirmed. He puts the “ass” in crass.

But hey…remember Hillary is hard to take. Compared to the pack of goons the Repubs are throwing at the wall she is downright saintly by comparison.

The highest and most honorable office in the country and this is the behavior? Should little kids look at these fools as something to want to emulate and aspire to be when they grow up. This is not good for our country. Hell, this isn’t good for anything.

Same with Huck, same with the ginned up PP bullshit that may actually result in a scalp that fucks over every single woman in America in a way that may never be walked back.

re: #75 The Vicious Babushka

The second time they tried an American Revolution it did not end well for the revolutionists.

That’s because the second time the people they were revolting against had nowhere to run.

In the first revolution the Americans were defending their homes and the British were trying to impose their will on it. Eventually it became too much trouble, too expensive in money and lives, so the Brits quit. They went home.

In the second, the North had nowhere to run, nor did the South. It was their homes they were fighting over and neither side was going to run. Because they had nowhere to run to.

That’s the way it is through history. When imperial powers try to impose their will on faraway lands they usually lose because the people they are trying to conquer are defending their homes. Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan are recent examples.

The Civil War had to be fought to the bitter end because everyone involved was already home.

Grand jury decision expected in fatal traffic stop shooting

Prosecutor Joe Deters will hold the news conference on the Samuel Dubose case at 1 p.m., a news release stated. Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley, Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell and City Manager Harry Black will hold a 2 p.m. news conference.

The University of Cincinnati’s Uptown and Medical campus offices will close and classes are cancelled at 11 a.m., the school said. The closure does not include the Blue Ash and Clermont campuses.

“This decision is made with an abundance of caution in anticipation of today’s announcement of the Hamilton County grand jury’s decision regarding the July 19 officer-involved shooting of Samuel Dubose and the release of the officer’s body camera video. We realize this is a challenging time for our university community,” the school said in an email.

A grand jury has been looking at evidence, including a body camera that University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing was wearing during the July 19 traffic stop.

Despite reasonable vigilance, the killings are starting to run together.

That’s what happens when there’s at least 2 officer involved shootings every day.

That’s what happens when there are at least one mass shooting every day.

That’s what happens when there are at least 1 mass murder every 2 weeks.

This is what happens when nothing is done to address the pervasive nature of weak firearms registration laws, closing loopholes, or addressing mental health issues relating to firearms.

This is what happens with a justice system gives carte blanche to law enforcement - enabling their killings as justified homicides because they feared for their lives (which before video, was taken as for granted, but now is seen as excessive force or intentional homicide where cops acted illegally or against policy/rule).

This is what happens when the NRA owns Congress and refuses to fix laws that are clearly ineffective/broken, and uses fear mongering to spur ever more sales.

Because what we need are still more guns, particularly in dark movie theaters where you get a free fire zone resulting in still more casualties than if no one but the shooter had them.

Basic requirements about licensing/insurance/training aren’t even considered, even though it might help reduce accidents, weed out those with mental illness, or reduce harms to themselves or others.

I still would like to know how top people at PP got taken in by poseurs with absolutely no professional footprint and with business cards/logo that look like this. They look like they were designed by a sixth-grader (no offense to sixth-graders) and printed one at a time on an ink-jet printer—which they probably were.

Knowing that freaks like these are out to get them, the folks at PP need to be much more careful about vetting these companies before giving them the time of day.

I wasn’t serious when I said it last week, but I’m starting to think now that there has to be an exceptionally severe penalty for a bad shooting. Right now, it seems if a cop says, “I thought he was going for a gun!”, or even “I felt threatened!”, that he won’t even lose their job over it. There’s no incentive NOT to shoot, apart from feeling bad about it and having to perhaps endure being hated by strangers, while being hailed as a hero by other cops and the Law ‘N’ Order gang.

Sure, being a cop is risky. So is being a commercial fisherman, or a logger, or a construction worker. In fact, cop doesn’t even make the top 10 most dangerous professions.

We entrust them with the permission to use deadly force on our behalf. We should be holding them to a very high standard, so that shooting a stranger on the suspicion of maybe having a gun will stop being automatic.

And in many cases, not only bomb Iran, but turning the country into a day-glo parking lot, which can’t be interpreted as anything else than using nuclear weapons.

And given the demographics of Iran, many of the victims of using such weapons will be children. Children drowning in their own blood and/or bodily fluids. Children crying in agony from 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Children dying while experiencing the excruciating pain of acute radiation syndrome.

When they at the same time profess to care for “unborn children.”

When I use my phone on a long thread and I’m somewhere in the middle it takes me forever to scroll to the bottom or the top if I want to skip over the rest of the comments. My keyboard does not have a page-up or page-down button. Chrome in Android doesn’t seem to have a way of getting to the top or bottom built in, unless I’ve been mislead. If I use the reply or quote button I have to delete text from the box.

If you could put a pull out or swipe out tab fixed to the side of the window that gives us the ability to jump to the top or the bottom from anywhere in the thread it would be a big help.

University of Cincinnati has shut down two of the campuses.

This does not sound good. From the reports yesterday and now this, it sounds like they have a big problem on their hands. Cincinnati has had riots over police back in 2001 so they must know the city is going to go crazy again.

What really, really irks me about the “keep your legs closed” argument (and I use the word “argument” very loosely here) is the caricature of a woman on birth control as a sex-crazed slut sleeping with everything and anything, because being on the Pill makes sex totally consequence-free!

Never mind there are people in committed relationships who use birth control for actual family planning if they’re not ready for children. Like my wife and I before we had kids.

And now that we’ve had kids? Guess what, more family planning, only this time, we need to prevent pregnancy because another one may threaten her life. (Two kids by C-section; doctors advised against having a third.) But, no, some people would like to take away our option for a potentially life-saving, safe and legal abortion because we need to “accept the consequences” of being married for over a decade and still wanting to sleep with one another.

Chaka Fattah under indictment for Corruption Charges

npr.org

Ugh, if true

The charges against Fattah and four other associates stem from Fattah’s failed 2007 campaign for mayor of Philadelphia. According to the indictment, Fattah and his associates allegedly borrowed $1 million from a wealthy supporter. When he lost, they allegedly returned the unused $400,000 and then arranged for a nonprofit that they controlled to pay out the remaining $600,000.

That charity, the Educational Advancement Alliance, which was supposed to give at-risk students a better chance at a higher education, received federal grants. To conceal that payment, the indictment alleges that Fattah and others created sham contracts, falsified accounting records, tax returns and finance disclosure statements.

In addition, the indictment alleges Fattah also looked to pay back supporters by offering federal grants and that he also misappropriated campaign funds to repay his son’s student debt to the tune of $23,000.

re: #209 Backwoods_Sleuth

MrBWS has been given a new assignment at work in Greater Cincinnati. He has replaced the guy who goes around shutting off electric to people with huge unpaid bills (like in the thousands of dollars in arrears).
Not a particularly safe job in good times. I’m really getting worried now.

Ms. Sleuth: I live near the heart of the city and I am not concerned. The difference is in Cincinnati, unlike Ferguson, Baltimore, et al, police and neighborhoods have been working together as part of the Collaborative Agreement. Our mayor and City Council and many arts and community groups are actively working to transform Cincinnati’s historically abysmal record on race. What I’m trying to say is that neither police officials or city government is treating this a “us against them” (also, too the officer involved was a Univ of Cincinnati police officer, not Cincinnati, though that doesn’t make the murder any less egregious). Can’t totally guarantee that there couldn’t be violence, but I don’t think there will be.

Also, as context, a couple of months ago a young African American man committed suicide by cop and killed a well loved Cincinnati Police officer. The police killed the young man. There were no riots. There was no demonization of the young man and his family by police, city officials, prosecutors, or even local media. The young man’s grandmother apologized to Officer Kim’s family on TV. My point is, it was a tragic situation but because of a lot of hard work and commitment by people in the city we didn’t experience compounding tragedies that have occurred in so many others cities (including Cincinnati several years ago). So I hope this context provides some comfort.

There were a couple of other planes that crashed in that neighborhood. It’s possible it could be a part of one of those.

It is thought they may look at whether the piece belonged to the crash of a twin engine plane in May 4, 2006 close to La Reunion island, whether it is a fragment of MH370, or even a piece of a Yemenia flight A310, which crashed off the coast of the Comoros in June 2009.

My dad worked in rent-a-car then in Boston (it was the very early days of that industry) and I remember that a black family from our hometown had to travel to the South—I think Mississippi, and was going to try to rent a car when they got there.

My dad gave them a letter of recommendation (I know—ridiculous that they’d need it but) saying he personally guaranteed the rental and to call his office if there was any kind of issue.

When they got back, they told us how they tried to do it first without the letter and were hassled, but that the letter solved their problem, and how thankful they were to have it with them.

They brought us a box of pecan divinities. It was my first actual knowledge of what minorities faced in this country. I never forgot it.

Nothing about the stop was legit according to the DA. It was a BS stop, and it led to murder.

The shooting - and Sam Dubose’s instant death due to being shot in the head at near point blank range - led to the cop being dragged for a distance. Sam Dubose did nothing wrong during that stop.

The cop lied at every step of the way, and the video shows that Dubose complied.

It’s murder.

From what I gathered, the DA said that Tensing fell back after shooting Dubose and that’s how he wound up on the ground. Then he pursued the vehicle as it accelerated as Dubose engaged the gas, presumably, post mortem. And the ‘dragged’ story was pure CYA.

I’m wondering if this cop just went ahead and shot the guy thinking he could get away with it in light of Ferguson, Baltimore and Cleveland more or less letting the cops off. And yes, I now Baltimore is still investigating.

As I said earlier, hopefully this is the case that outrages America and starts the process for ALL police departments to go over all their procedures.

And hopefully the solid way Deters has handled this gives other prosecutors the backbone to stand up and do the right thing.

That will work okay for them until reality comes knocking at the door as it did in, for instance, 2008. That’s when a Democratic Congress and a Democratic President will be elected to pull the chestnuts out of the fire. The chestnut-pulling will be accompanied by the lamentations of the cons over the tyranny of the government.

Thus it was, is now, and ever shall be.

So… Windows 10.

imgur.com

It feels a lot like Windows 7 and 8. In a good way. The start menu is different but not terribly so, the real annoying part is “All Programs” became “All Apps” and is just a bit too big for me.

You used to be able to pin programs to the top of the start menu, these were automatically moved to the right hand side as large icons. These are the same interactive icons that used to be on the weird Start menu replacement for Windows 8, but contained in the start menu. Some are actually useful, like the weather app.

Image: Lwy93VY.png

Win-Tab now shows you a list of all windows on each screen. Apparently there’s some way to do workspaces (they call them “desktops”) where you have only certain windows appear — for example, I could have my Android development tools and a few Google Chrome windows on one Desktop, and my Minecraft and other Google Chrome windows on another. I’m not terribly worried about it.

So yeah. Nothing game changing, I guess. I haven’t tried out the Siri knockoff as it requires you set up Microsoft account integration (including making you use your Microsoft account as a Windows login), and I would prefer not to do that quite yet.

An unplanned pregnancy is an opportunity to shame a woman for having sex.

Being forced to carry that pregnancy to term is the punishment for having sex.

Having to raise a baby you didn’t want and can’t afford to raise provides years of opportunity to shame a woman for being so irresponsible, and if she’s not white, you get to shame her entire race.
