Donald Trump on Climate Change: It’s Just ‘Bad Weather’

If you’ve been wondering whether Donald Trump was going to join the rest of the anti-science conservative world and deny the existence of climate change, despite the mountains of evidence and overwhelming scientific consensus, well yes, he is.

“The real climate change is going to be nuclear climate change if we’re not smart and tough and very, very careful because that’s a big danger and that’s a real danger,” Trump said. “I think Obama just said that the biggest threat that we have on the planet today is climate change, and a lot of people are saying, did he really say that? We have people chopping off heads and he’s talking about climate change. I call it weather. I call it weather. You know, the weather changes.

[…]

“You look back and they were calling it global cooling and global warming and global everything, but if you look back and the biggest tornados were in the 1890s, the biggest hurricanes were in the 1860s and 1870s. It’s weather. You’re going to have bad weather. So often I watch the evening newscasts and every time there is a rainstorm some place, and then they wonder why they don’t do well, they say, ‘It’s raining here and it’s raining there,’ usually leading the program. I call it weather. Maybe there’s a little bit of change, I don’t happen to believe it’s manmade.”

Cut him some slack, Donald is a little slow on the pick-up. For instance he only learned yesterday that marital rape is a thing.

“Never a miscommunication.” That’s the part I always found weird. What the hell does that mean, “Never a miscommunication”? It made me imagine a Bob Newhart-style telephone bit, where one guy’s standing at the shore, calling the main office to let them know that the tide that was supposed to come in hours ago still hasn’t shown up.

“Cleveland? It’s stuck in Cleveland? Why was it in Cleveland?…Oh. Cheaper if it went by truck?”

Guy builds lots of fancy buildings on coastlines. He has a ton of investments in places like NYC. As oceans rise, the insurance for those properties will increase.

He’s going to be feeling the effects of global warming, whether he believes it or not.

That’s the thing about science and climate. It doesn’t matter what you believe - the science shows it to be the case. The global climate temps keep increasing. CO2 levels keep increasing. Ocean levels are increasing.

And this trend has accelerated.

If someone’s got to bury their head in the sand, it figures it’d be Trump.

I find myself flabbergasted by people, even educated ones, who say, “They can’t predict the weather tomorrow, how can they predict the climate in 30 years?”

It’s like saying, “You can’t tell me which side of this coin will come up if I flip it, so how could you possibly tell me how many times it will come up heads if I flip it a thousand times?”

Also, just another thought on climate change, what are wingnuts’ explanations for the retreat of glaciers everywhere on earth?

I mean, maybe the eeeebil climate scientists are giving us temperatures that need, er, unskewing. But I can see Grinnell Glacier disappearing with my own eyes, just as the glacier on Chachaltaya in Bolivia already has. How do they explain that? What you have to realize is that there’s an entire cottage industry manufacturing Denialist responses. On glaciers, for example, they point to a handful of glaciers that grew, largely because of increased monsoonal moisture being dumped in the mountains - the increased monsoonal moisture being caused by warmer ocean temps, caused by increased CO2.

But those glaciers increased, so they have a counterpoint, valid or not.

I have a general rule of ignoring Allen West, mostly to insure my own sanity, but I went ahead and clicked through…

President Obama doesn’t seem to understand we don’t need him, or his ilk, to develop a policy of “gun safety laws” - guns already have safeties on them.

I assume that passes for “clever” in the wingularity these days. But damn, that’s stupid. Not as stupid as this, but still:

The left fails to acknowledge the issue of the mentally unstable being able to gain access to firearms. Yet, the liberal progressive left wants to restrict veteran gun ownership by way of diagnosis of PTSD - and then folks wonder why many veterans avoid that diagnosis at all costs.

Pretty much everyone I’ve read on gun control wants to prevent mentally unstable people from getting access to guns. I’m sure there are a thousand reasons why veterans try to avoid the diagnosis of PTSD, probably much higher on the list than they tuk mah gunz! is a sense of macho bullshit that refuses to admit the need for help. And quite honestly, does anyone really want someone with PTSD to have guns? When they can be suicidal and/or suffer flashbacks to a war zone?

You lead with the best thing you’ve got, and they had to heavily edit that to approach any appearance of impropriety, which vanished when the excised portions are viewed.

In their defense, it’s just two guys; they’re doing extensive .NET development and have been playing with the beta for months. I like 8 well enough, but I’m sticking with the corporate 7 image for now.

I ran the Beta version of 10 for a couple of months. Wasn’t that impressed with it so I nuked the HD and reinstalled 7 from my backup disk.

I did the same thing, more or less. I had one build of Win 10 work well but when they released the next build it killed my system so I had to nuke it a go back to Win 8.1.

I just installed Windows 10 on my laptop. So far it seems to be working except for a bit of a conflict with Avast IS.

I bought a new laptop in May after my trusty XP machine final gave it up. I suffered for several weeks trying force windows 8.1 to operate according to how I wanted it to, not how it wanted. After much cursing, browsing, and configuring, I got it into a state that it is at least usable and, surprisingly, stable. I do not want to go through that with 10. I think I’ll wait a bit, let the early adopters do Microsoft’s testing, and see how things go.

Indeed; with Microsoft moving to Windows-as-a-service with 10, the Windows service pack as we knew it no longer exists, because any major fixes or added features in 10 will get pushed out as soon as MS gets it done, with those in the Insider program (like me) serving as perpetual test mules before MS rolls them out to everyone else.

Reading Livy and he mentions a Roman army being punished for getting carried away and taking an enemy and then its citadel when it hadn’t been ordered to do so. It may have been trumped up, Livy suspects so. The Consul who headed the army deprived it of the spoils instead remitting what he said was the value of them to the treasury.

They claimed to have seen him alive for the last time just half an hour earlier, at 9:30. The 53-year-old’s family told Fusion that two of Henry’s ribs had been broken, though his official cause of death remains unclear. The Jackson Free Press reports that his body has been “flown to Florida for an independent autopsy paid for by anonymous donors.”

He’d apparently been arrested for failing to pay an old fine.

8 is good if you install Classic Shell to bring back the Win 7 start menu. Large file copies are more stable than on 7, and the task manager is a lot better.

Sigh. My screen said “preparing to update” for about an hour, then changed to “How do you want your updates installed.” Chose automatic, clicked “apply” and nothing. I give up. Guess I’ll take the damn thing into a repair shop tomorrow.

The Times reported that a significant portion of [Cruz’s] early money came from a single donor: Robert Mercer, a hedge-fund executive who is so private that one of the few traces of his personal life in the public record is a lawsuit that he brought against a toy company that installed a model train set in his home and, he felt, overcharged him—by two million dollars.

Tensing attorney: Murder charge ‘absolutely unwarranted’

The attorney for the University of Cincinnati police officer who fatally shot Samuel DuBose in a traffic stop said charging his client with murder is “absolutely unwarranted.”

“Murder is the purposeful killing of another,” said Stuart Mathews. “There wasn’t any purpose to kill this fella.”

snip

Mathews said a second video - not publicly shared - shows Tensing on the ground. Mathews, drawing on conversations with his client and video he’s seen, said Tensing was knocked to the ground, dragged and “feared for his life.”

Tensing’s body cam video, reviewed by The Enquirer, does not show that.

Tensing’s mugshot is at the link.

Tensing would have hit the ground only after he fired the shot. The video made public today clearly establishes that Tensing was on his feet right up to the moment the shot was fired.

That he may have the ground after the shot is irrelevant. He had already shot the victim in the head.

He never graded our homework, he just checked it and handed it badk to us, he might ask us to redo it if it was substandard.

Seriously Allen West? OMG. I know two young men, TWO, who have killed themselves after repeated tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know a third who has serious PTSD (he was a guard at the prison where Saddam was held, he saw some ugly shit), is armed to the eyeballs and has two little kids in the house. He won’t get help either. The latest one who shot himself did so 6 weeks ago after his girlfriend called the police because he hit her (and that wasn’t the first time) while she was holding their infant daughter. He shot himself in front of them both, so close that brain and blood had to be cleaned off the both of them. But NO, the guns aren’t the fucking issue, nope. The first young man was my son in law. About 7 yrs ago he lost hope of getting any help (they live in Appalachia, there’s nothing there) and killed himself because he knew his two little girls would get survivors benefits because he couldn’t keep a job. He thought he was worth more dead than alive. But no, he should have had a gun too, hell a whole truck load, you know, because it’s so manly and 2nd ammendmentylicious.

God damn it I’m so sick of this gun humping ammosexual freaking bullshit. I’m sorry some guys just can’t handle having teeny weenies, but a gun ain’t gonna fix that. GAH. Dubose was shutting his door after officer opened it and then started the car up. That’s when Tensing reached into the car and struggled with him, then shot him in the head. ONLY THEN, did the car move.

That was horrible to watch. Just awful.

Kasich and Jeb! are considered the sane ones at this point. And if there are any moderates even left in the GOP, they know in their hearts that they’d have to start flinging shit to even break through the noise at this point and won’t even bother.

So… Pull-up contests. Calling each other ‘losers’ and ‘dummies.’ Lowest common denominator pandering. Shitshow. This is what they wanted, and this is what they’ve got.

Rank and file Republicans like this lineup. They honestly feel like a windbag who shoots off his mouth or a God-botherer who compares Obama to Hitler on the regular are fit to run the World’s Greatest Superpower.

I need to locate my political dictionary to look up obscure GOP governors, because another one just declared for the race. Jim Gilmore.

Had to do a double take. Who? Who?

Governor of VA from 1998 to 2002.

We’ve now gotten to the point that the GOP field is so splintered and weak that anyone who ever potentially has run for office is contemplating a run.

That’s not a sign of strength. It’s a sign that the GOP is off the rails.

Jindal was right about one thing - it takes some extreme quotes to even get noticed these days. Gilmore’s announcement barely made a ripple in headlines.

So he was like a modern CEO. Other people do all the work and he takes all the money.

Hillary Clinton defended Planned Parenthood last week after an anti-abortion group released undercover videos purporting to show the family planning services provider selling fetal tissue. I was just watching the DuBose shooting video mainly for one aspect of the discussion. I went frame by frame in the part after the shooting looking to see what happened that the cop figured he could claim he got dragged by the car.

He does seem to have been on the ground after the gun shot. It all happens so fast that when you watch the video it all goes by so fast you really have no feel for it.

As you can tell in my sequence of stills, it all happens within the one second I worked with. I did not spend a lot of time and I really had poor control of the frames. I imagine this video is being analysed by a lot of people using real programming. I was jsut looking for some idea he went down on the ground.

Assembly GOP lawmakers vow to quickly pass fetal tissue bill

State Assembly Republicans are vowing to pass by as early as September a bill still in draft form to ban the sale, donation and use of the body parts of fetuses following abortions and require the remains to be buried or cremated.

The proposal has languished in the past two legislative sessions but controversial videos have added momentum to the measure, with Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) committing to the bill Wednesday before it has even been introduced.

“We’re going to come back in the fall and we’re going to pass a bill that ensures that the sale of fetal body parts anywhere in Wisconsin is a crime with heavy punishment,” Vos told conservative radio host Jay Weber.

It’s already a crime to profit from the sale of fetal tissue and abortion clinics say no tissue transfers of any kind are happening in Wisconsin. But the bill would go farther than existing law and ban donations of such tissues or research on longstanding tissue lines — an alarming development for some medical researchers.

Why does Planned Parenthood target minorities? Why are 80% of Planned Parenthood shops set up in minority…

AZ Representative John Kyl made his famous utterance a while back about how 90% of PP’s activities are based on providing abortion. People laughed at him, but nobody in his party took him to task for such a fact-free assertion, even after he later admitted that it was not meant to be factually true.

That obviously helped serve, along with O’Keefe and Breitbart, for the latest all-out assault on PP, as it is a matter of faith to the GOP now that PP workers just around all day thinking of nothing but abortions and selling baby parts for profit.

re: #331 makeitstop

John Raymond Sr. agreed on the issue’s importance. A doctor and chief executive officer of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Raymond said he didn’t condone any illegal practices involving fetal tissue.

But the Medical College, he said, opposes the provisions in the draft that would “ban and criminalize the possession and research of federally allowed fetal tissue and fetal-derived cell lines that have been used worldwide for decades.”

This irrationality is going to be a big problem.

This such a good story. And the little boy (Zion?) is great…I can see why they chose him for this operation. I hope it all works for him. The docs all seem pretty positive he will have great results…even normal growth in the hands as he grows. Just amazing.

cont…The bill will almost certainly pass in some form in the Assembly, which Republicans control by a commanding margin of 63-36. Kleefisch, a sponsor of the measure, said he was certain he already has the votes in his committee to advance the proposal, which would make it a felony to donate or use fetal tissue for research after an abortion.

It’s unbelievable. The Kochs literally own a state.

We’re screwed if the GOP takes the White House next time.

Charles Pierce, back in 2013:

The main point of the reign of Scott Walker, the twice-elected goggle-eyed homunculus hired by Koch Industries to manage their midwest subsidiary formerly known as the state of Wisconsin, has been to dismantle the laws and traditions of progressive government that originated in that very state, because if they can do this in Wisconsin, they can do it anywhere.

And current PP haters…does this make you wonder how much micro study of tissue and cell growth has come form studying the tissue donated and stem cell research from fetuses? Probably not…

Even more so is the great news today about 5-year-old Leah Still being cancer-free in her latest scans after her very long and difficult struggle with stage 4 neuroblastoma. And what has apparently saved her was stem cell therapy.

It is now.

The snake was captured along the Shark Valley tram road in early July. It measured 18 feet, 3 inches, reports CBS Miami.

The largest snake ever caught in Florida was 18-feet and 7 inches, caught in 2013 in Miami-Dade, the station reports.

According to Everglades National Park spokeswoman Linda Friar, the snake was humanely euthanized.

CBS Miami reports that a necropsy was conducted, which found the snake was a female, but had not reproduced this season. Her stomach was also empty.

As I mentioned, my laptop issues pre-date Win 10. A few weeks ago, it said it was installing 92 updates, followed the next day by 52 updates. However, when I look at update history, it says nothing has been updated since February 2014—which I know is a lie, because it updated from 8 to 8.1 a few days ago.

I only really use the laptop when I travel for work, which I’ll be doing quite a bit this fall, so I need to get it fixed before then. It’s been weird since I got it—screen freezes and images jump around, phantom cursors, aps that open themselves when I’m nowhere near the computer. I swear, the only programs I even use on the damn thing are Chrome, Office, and Dropbox (which, as I mentioned, it deleted during the last update—must be really pushing the Windows One Drive—which appeared as an ap when my Dropbox disappeared—hmmm).

It hasn’t even gotten to the Product Key part on that one - but that machine is an OEM install, so Windows may handle that upgrade differently.

The bill doesn’t just ban research with fetal tissues. It apparently also bans research using any cell line derived from fetal tissues. That would include HEK293, one of the, if not THE most widely used human cell line in all of Biotech research. They were derived from fetal kidney tissue in the 1970s, and are used by pretty much everybody. If you make possession illegal, research in Biotech companies and University labs will not only grind to a halt, they will have to go through their LN2 storage and pull all the vials of 293’s and any derivative thereof.

Really, that was the first thing I thought.

re: #398 BeachDem

Either you have been letting Sheryl Attkisson use your PC or the NSA is after you (or both).

The NSA would be super bored with my laptop as there is next to nothing on it. (They’d be bored with my desktop as well—it has a lot of stuff, but it’s all boring.)

The NSA doesn’t scare me at all, but the Sharyl Attkisson aspect is REALLY scary!!

The fantasy people have that the NSA gives a flying fuck what kind of porn they watch is an interesting psychological symptom in itself.

re: #382 No Country For Old Haters

This is probably a very good week for computer repair services.

I’ve had an Acer laptop running W7 for about 3yrs, and I’ve had very few problems, but just a few days ago, the cooling fan totally stopped working. All options in all power plans have been double-checked. Of course, I’ve been resisting the push to W10. Oh, and my Reliability logs show that GWX crashed twice in one day about a week ago.

I’d have to be paranoid to imagine these events might be related. //
