Wednesday Jam: The Tallest Man on Earth, “Sagres” (Live Performance)

Music • Views: 65,911

YouTube

This is a terrific live performance of a song from The Tallest Man Earth’s excellent new album, Dark Bird Is Home, recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York last month.

Sagres

We were travellers, so blind
Went to where the world did end
ran a dozen ways till now
So this is when we walked away

And this sadness I suppose
gonna hold me to the ground
where I’m forced to find the still
in a place you won’t be ‘round

Was I ever part of knowing
with your hands in mine
little screams into the wonder
And, oh, I’ll (?)
come on, come on

And so here I go again
Say I want my freedom, sure
but it’s like end of all the dreams
Like in my life I needed more
and this madness, I suppose
Gonna haunt me with a lie
That I could drink until I sleep
through, oh, scarier times

Was I ever part of knowing
with your hands in mine
little screams into the wonder
And, oh, I’ll (?)
Come on, come on

Now was I ever going to be more than these savages in me
And still we’ll sing into silence, just to silence tears
now what is left in here?
It’s not the staying to see this flickering life, no
It’s not me knowing what’s deeper than dust, no
It’s not the reason those shadows that are gone, no
It’s not me knowing I’m yet to see fire

It’s just all this fucking doubt
come on, come on

And this sadness I suppose
Gonna hold me to the ground
where I’m forced to find the still
in a place you won’t be ‘round

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this latest STING!!!!! video doesn’t involve PP. It’s some other company that collects tissue, etc. LEGALLY and is FOR PROFIT, unlike PP which is a NON-PROFIT. Am I right?

THERE WERE 2 ROOSEVELTS?!

And all sorts of other almost-Roosevelts:

It seems like every day there is a new report tracing the genealogical roots of the American presidents: Abraham Lincoln and George W. Bush were seventh cousins (four times removed), and Jimmy Carter and George Washington were ninth cousins (six times removed). No president, however, can boast as many commander-in-chief connections as Franklin Delano Roosevelt who, by blood or marriage, was related to 11 other former presidents: John Adams, James Madison, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, William Howard Taft and, of course, Theodore Roosevelt, FDR’s fifth cousin. Roosevelt’s famous family tree doesn’t end at the White House. He was also reportedly related to several other historic figures, including Winston Churchill, Douglas MacArthur and two famed Confederate leaders: Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee.

July 31 will be the two hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the issuance of the first U.S. patent. On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins was issued the patent for a process of making potash, an ingredient used in fertilizer. The patent was signed by President George Washington.

It would not take my optima card before, now won’t take the other card because I have a paypal account and did not log in. asked for another email unassocated with my paypal. Fine I put one in that was just established on my work ISP this week.

Nope.

You cannot use an e-mail address or card number that belongs to an existing PayPal account. If you have a PayPal account, please log in. If you don’t, please change the e-mail address or card number and try again.

Ever considered Square? Gah, paypal sucks. Maybe the card I’m using is associated with my old Paypal account, but I don’t have my login having given up on them long ago.

Now I can’t absolutely vouch for the accuracy of the numbers given, but their methodology looks like it’s basically solid. The source is a hard anti-abortion organization, but I think the numbers are accurate. I’ve done some rounding just to simply.

# in US since 73 (Roe v Wade): 58,000,000
# by Planned Parenthood since 70: 6,825,000
# Worldwide since 80: 1,343,000,000

Charles,

I’m not sure if this is intentional, but the new layout is driving me nuts when I’m in full screen mode (resolution is 1366x768) because the two column layout results in an off center comments section.

The main div is set to 1000 pixels, and so it gets padded out on both the right and the left, once the right hand column runs out, there’s an uneven amount of grey space to either side of the comments which is really weird. Windowing my browser to 1000 pixels wide resolves the issue (comments appear left justified with extra space on the right), but using my browser “normally” on the comments section is giving me a headache.

These are people for whom ‘truth’ is a set of deeply-held fictions, and their morality is entirely relative to their creepy, weird obsession over what other people do with their own bodies and lives. Religion is just the lame excuse they use to rationalize all the lying and shaming and shouting and stalking and violence they do in their lord’s name. They believe they are being persecuted because thinking so makes it easier for them to persecute others, but there is no god here at the barricades — not one that is worthy of worship, anyway. It’s just them, and they are just being themselves.

They are Christian fascists. Against them, we dare defend these places of refuge where women can take charge of their own lives in safety. We dare defend the truth, justice, and an American way where everyone’s full rights of self-determination are respected.

There is no “fact-finding” in Texas, only derp.

[Embedded content]

They do everything bigger in Texas, including the state legislature. They’re the largest legislature in the nation, and that means more derp to go around.

The derp will keep being laid on thick, and that’s exactly how the anti-choice extremists want it. They will lie, smear, and attack PP regardless that PP did nothing wrong and that there were no sales of fetal tissue or that donations are done and PP is entitled to reimbursement for shipping costs, which is standard operating practice across the medical and research fields.

The anti-choice extremists play upon emotion - knowing that gruesome imagery sells and that choice of language is picked precisely to maximize their effect. That’s why they go with pro-life, not anti-choice, even though the life they supposedly care about means screwing women who are actually alive. They care more about the fetus in the womb for 9 months than they do for the women (or men for that matter) before or after. They don’t want birth control to be an option. They don’t want preventative care. They want PP shut down, even though it provides medical care to millions of people, because they find the idea of family planning to be antithetical to their religious beliefs and/or worldview.

And those lies have managed to get enough in Congress to buy into the BS that they’re willing to consider yet another GOP led shutdown of government over it.

That would be me. I was watching some CNN talking head interviewing a so-called expert who swore that it wasn’t a 777 part, but an Airbus part. Well, for all their wall to wall coverage, they don’t quite have experts who know what they are talking about.

But their reporters will probably get to spend swanky time at Reunion Island to report on-scene. And that’s what matters. That they got key information wrong, or were basically talking out of their ass is entirely besides the point. They wanted to be first to report - and that’s what mattered.

CNN Poll: Bernie Sanders Leads All Republican Candidates

SANDERS: 48%
BUSH: 47%

SANDERS: 48%
WALKER: 42%

SANDERS: 59%
TRUMP: 38%

If you limit the poll sample to just registered voters, Bush defeats Sanders by a single point. Either way, this credible poll suggests that Sanders is not just some pie-in-the-sky general election candidate. His more uphill battle may be the primary. But even there, he has some strengths. Polling out last week shows he’s the only candidate from either side who has a net favorability rating.

I know Bernie has a positive favorability rating, but I think this poll shows just how bad the GOP Clown Car is for the Republicans. Every day one Republican candidate after another says something that’s totally outrageous so they can get some traction in the media. That strategy is working as click bait, but in the minds of the voters, they look like crazy people.

lawhawk  Jul 30, 2015 • 6:07:25am

So, I’m reading through my feeds this morning, and came across an incident in Western NJ. An off-duty cop shot at a couple of people who mistakenly knocked on his door. No one was injured thankfully, but no charges have been filed so far.

An off-duty state trooper fired shots at a car with three young men inside as they were trying to drive away from his house after knocking on his door by mistake at night while looking for the house of a friend who lives next door, officials said.

The trooper told investigators he suspected the three men were trying to enter his Sparta home, 50 miles northwest of New York City, between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday, the attorney general’s office said.

The trooper remains on active duty, office spokesman Peter Aseltine said. No criminal charges have been filed, and the shooting remains under investigation. No one was injured in the shooting.

Jesse Barkhorn, 18, was in the car that night and said on Wednesday that they attended a party earlier and were dropping off one of them at a friend’s house. He said they mistakenly knocked on the door at the house next to their friend’s house. He said they heard a man screaming from inside and they ran back to the car.

They turned around in the cul-de-sac where the home is located and saw the man standing with his weapon pointed at them, Barkhorn said.

“At this point we’re freaking out, ‘It’s a gun. It’s a gun,’” Barkhorn said. “I was like, ‘Dude, get out of here.’”

He said the driver accelerated and the man then fired at them. One of the bullets struck the car’s front tire and the driver stopped the car a short distance away.

According to officials, who didn’t release the names of those involved, two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old went to the wrong house, knocked on the door and fled after a verbal exchange. They got in their car and drove away, and the trooper fired three shots with his personal weapon when the car did not stop, officials said.

Once again, a trigger happy cop (on or off duty) fires his weapon for no damned reason. Knocking on the door isn’t a deadly offense. Using a gun in that manner is a crime though - including assault with a deadly weapon. This officer should be on desk duty pending further investigation and charges.

Then, there was this report where a man was arrested with making terroristic threats against police. The threat? He claimed he had a knife. Except that the knife was never brandished and dropped when police confronted him.

Police Officer Ryan Vallaro approached Anderson at about 12:45 a.m. as the defendant stumbled in a traffic lane on Mountain View Boulevard while screaming profanities, Laurence said. The captain said the officer, along with two off-duty Cedar Grove police officers who happened to be in the area, chased Anderson onto an NJ Transit train station platform. Laurence said the defendant then took out a folding knife and screamed, “I have a knife.”

Anderson did not pull out the blade of the folding knife and dropped it when the officer ordered him to do so at gunpoint, Laurence said. The captain said that the defendant, who also was charged with disorderly conduct, appeared to be intoxicated. Anderson could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

It seems like an excessive charge for what would be simple assault.

Neither of these reports will make national headlines because no one died, but it shows just how law enforcement operates on a daily basis - where officers not only use excessive force, but will overly charge suspects for crimes (or where prosecutors do it to coerce plea deals).

CNN Poll: Bernie Sanders Leads All Republican Candidates

I know Bernie has a positive favorability rating, but I think this poll shows just how bad the GOP Clown Car is for the Republicans. Every day one Republican candidate after another says something that’s totally outrageous so they can get some traction in the media. That strategy is working as click bait, but in the minds of the voters, they look like crazy people.

Birchers, neo-feudalists and other influential Republican elements will not be able to resist striking at the bait provided by the “socialist” label, thereby destroying their own credibility and exposing their real agenda when the voters get to see what Bernie is REALLY like and who he really is.

I have an observation…’cuz that is what I like to do…observe.

Would idiots like Erick son of Erick, Chuck Johnson and Benny Shapiro have any status or public attention if it wasn’t for Twitter and the people that they get to retweet them and spread their crap around?

I’m thinking of all the media outlets of the past (prior to shared social media) and what it would take to get some mention and standing as a public figure. All we really had was TV, newspapers and radio. And all of those were busy enough trying to be respected they would be pretty tough to get into because there was some actual standards of behavior.

Now…we get to read about and hear from some of the worst people and they actually make careers of being boorish boobs.

And now that this has become accepted behavior and people actually follow and reward it can’t it only get worse?

Acting like an idiot used to get you labeled as such and you’d become an outcast. Now you get more followers even if to hate on you…and then you can end up on ‘net and small cable TV shows where you can ham it up and think you are something.

The dream may well be similar to what Chucky Johnson hoped to pull off. Be a complete asshole and be celebrated for it.

Hey, even TRUMP® seems to understand that is where we are and is making it work for him.

If that were the case, then no one would ever get a hip replacement, colonoscopy, or any other invasive medical procedure.

I’ve spent more than my share of time in an ER over the past 6 months, and have seen all manner of medical procedures. While some of my relatives and friends can’t stand the sight of even a blood pull or stitches, I’m able to handle all that and more - and have seen far worse. Meanwhile, if the Mrs. goes and touches her eye to fix her contacts, I get queasy.

RWNJs project their own authoritarianism onto others. ~28,570,000 a year
or
~78,000 a day.

So, I further decided to balance those figures against a touch of reality
I calculated the average US population based on the last 4 national census’ (80, 90, 00, 10) now, these number will be very rough
266,355,000 average population
A rough estimate of the US birthrate since 1980 is <15 per 1,000 persons
(number is hard to average out, as population has increased the birthrate has declined. but I used 15 to be overly generous)
The numbers lead to a average birthrate of:
<4,000,000 per year
or
~11,000 per day

Also, Bidondi’s number would actually equal the combined population numbers of the 1980, 1990, 2000 & 2010 US national census

I don’t know why, but I decided to throw a little math at the brain damaged Dan Bidondi’s claim of 1,000,000,000 abortions since 1980.
Over the 35 year period of this claim, the maddening number would equal
~28,570,000 a year
or
~78,000 a day.

So, I further decided to balance those figures against a touch of reality

Yes, mid to late October is when it can get very cold. It’s been -40C on Halloween before. However, the cold snaps in October are becoming less frequent. I don’t remember having a really cold September in years, not since the ’90s.

Crowd funding raised around $200K for Zimmerman after he shot Trayvon Martin. He has been in subsequent legal trouble and I don’t believe that he’s had a job since the shooting so it’s quite plausible to me that he’s underwater.

Wingnuts still never answer what the specimens or baby parts are for. Their inference is:

1. PP forces or coerces women to have abortions.
2. This is done for profit.
3. a fertilized egg, zygote, embryo, etc is a human life. Therefore, abortion is murder. Therefore, PP is murder for profit.

If they cared so much about life the would be for birth control and against war and the proliferation of guns. This belies the fundamentalist insanity: an unborn child from the moment of conception until it enters this world is an idol of worship. I still think that Kasish is going to be the nom for VP. He has executive experience and it puts Ohio in play.

He will have a tough time winning Ohio in a presidential election. Of course, they will make big the fact that he was overwhelmingly reelected just last year, but the Democratic party really didn’t even try to get a decent candidate going and Ed FitzGerald only got 33% of the vote to Kasich’s 64%.

The vote turnout was about 40% so most Ohioans just stayed home out of disinterest.

That will not be the case in a big presidential election. It will be close, but the Dems can still win.

Also, since last year, the Ohio Democratic Party has been revamped due to the dissatisfaction with the last administration. Hopefully they up their game the next go-round.

Former UC officer pleads not guilty to murder charge; bond set at $1M

CINCINNATI —A former University of Cincinnati police officer has been arraigned in a Hamilton County courtroom Thursday morning.

Ray Tensing, 25, is charged with murder and voluntary manslaughter in the July 19 shooting death of Sam DuBose. He pleaded not guilty and bond was set at $1 million.

Applause broke out when the bond was announced, and Judge Megan Shanahan rebuked the courtroom crowd for the outburst.

“Ladies and gentlemen! This is a courtroom. You will conduct yourselves at all times!” Shanahan said.

Tensing can post 10 percent of the bond in cash or property to be released, and his attorney told WLWT News 5 that the family was working to come up with bond.

Wednesday night, Safari Club International, a worldwide organization that protects hunter’s rights and promotes wildlife conservation, announced it suspended the membership of Walter Palmer and his guide.

Safari Club International (SCI) supports a full and thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe. SCI has imposed immediate emergency membership suspensions of both the involved hunter and his guide/professional hunter, and they will remain in place pending the outcome of an investigation.

Safari Club International condemns unlawful and unethical hunting practices. SCI supports only legal hunting practices and those who comply with all applicable hunting rules and regulations, and SCI believes that those who intentionally take wildlife illegally should be prosecuted and punished to the maximum extent allowed by law.

Note the second paragraph.

Not to mention anyone with actual knowledge on the subject says that PP is probably taking a loss on the tissue donations.

re: #200 Amory Blaine

Shooting at a fleeing car is hardly self defense. This man is dangerous.

It’s the “never give up, never surrender” of allowing anyone they suspect of criminality, whether real or imagined, to get away unscathed. They would rather kill 10 in a high-speed chase, a gun exchange, what have you, then let some low level suspect get away. And killing a suspect is allowed because they didn’t do what the cop wanted quickly enough or with enough verve and deference.

I don’t know where the mentality came from but this NEVER LET GO of any suspect is the result of so much deadly force by police.

Can’t say I’m the least bit sad over that. Jane Hamsher revealed herself as an opportunist pretty early on, IMO.

They’re passing around a signup sheet for a “potluck” lunch tomorrow.

What the heck, I just signed up to bring Key Lime Pie.

Oooh! My favorite!

In case anyone is wondering how my Windows update is going, here’s the latest…

It’s been doing this since just before 6:00 last night. Excellent.

I let mine run overnight. By this morning I could install it. Once started, it did its own thing and done. This is a brand new computer, though. Now I get to install all my apps. That’s a full day thing.

Then I get to see if this whole episode was worth it. That said, Win 8 sux so virtually anything would be preferred.

If survival is the criterion then Louie Gohmert is wrong in every way because if you put him on an island, no matter how lush, he’d be killed by his own stupidity in less than ten days.

I was thinking Trump, but either/or.

(I know he’s joking, but the folks that do support either one of those asses think that BHO has been “unpresidential” but have no problem with the way Trump/Christie conduct themselves and would conduct themselves as President.)
