Cameron is doing a really shitty job in regards to radicalism in the UK.

The Government watchdog which inspects police forces’ readiness for terrorism admitted that it employed one of Britain’s most notorious Islamic extremists.
For almost two years Abdullah al Andalusi, led a double life, the Telegraph can reveal.
By night, he taught that the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) was “no different to Western armies,” said that “kaffirs,” non-Muslims, would be “punished in hell” and claimed that the British government wanted to destroy Islam.

This is why, I don’t consider Brits in my search. I am super blind to things, and may miss things that are painfully obvious. And Britain has a relaxed VISA regime with the United States, our immigration service will not catch red flags. Since Britain obviously isn’t taking an interest in, you know, monitoring things.

Saw Sandy and Lonnie Phillips, parents of one of the Aurora shooting victims on Maddow. They lost a lawsuit against the online retailers who sold Holmes ammunition and magazines, and have been ordered by a court to pay $280,000 in defendant’s attorney fees because of a law that protects the firearms industry from such suits.

I feel bad for the Phillips but one thing struck me as somewhat deceptive about the narrative being presented. The fact is that any brick and mortar retailer would have sold Holmes the same ridiculous shit with the same no questions asked policy. Focusing on the online aspect of the sales seems irrelevant in that regard, and is only there to present the idea that there’s some kind of loophole that was exploited when there really wasn’t. I mean, I get what they’re doing, creating a wedge issue, but the dishonesty is a little off-putting.

Looking into what Holmes bought the only thing that stands out as actually legally dicey is the M7A3 tear gas grenades, because the striker type fuzes were ruled explosives by the ATF in 2011 and Holmes carried out his attack in 2012. However if he bought them before the rule change it again would not have mattered whether the retailer was online or brick and mortar, the same who gives a shit attitude pervades the entire industry. That is what we need to deal with head on, and treating grown ass adults like we are idiots who might not support a cause enthusiastically without a red herring appetizer is one of those cynical tactics I’ve come to expect from conservatives. It looks bad on legitimately aggrieved victims of gun violence.

Whatever, I feel like their lawyer just took their money to fight a case with zero chance of success, costing them what looks like the entirety of their net worth, and gained little to nothing by way of PR value. These people were probably out of their minds with grief, and I commend them for remaining resolute in the face of their defeat, but there had to have been a more effective path an ethical attorney could have advised them to take.

re: #13 Eclectic Cyborg

No fucked up priorities here. Nope, not at all.

Thing is, EC, in this case the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) served a good purpose, whatever you think about guns.

As evidence, I offer the order from Senior District Judge Richard Matsch when he awarded the defendants in the lawsuit $203,000 in attorney’s fees. as Judge Matsch makes clear, the plaintiffs were not asking for monetary damages; They were asking the court for the following:

“The injunctive relief requested is to stop all the defendants’ commercial activities until their business practices have been changed and approved by the court. There is nothing in the record to indicate that the plaintiffs or the Brady Center, the apparent sponsor of this case, made any attempt to persuade the defendants to make any alterations of those practices before bringing this highly publicized lawsuit,”

That line and others like it make clear that the Brady Campaign was asking the judge to legislate and regulate from the bench. Judge Matsch refused because the changes sought were not the job of the courts to create or administer. The job of making the law belongs to the legislature, and that of drafting regulations to enforce the law to the executive. That the legislature (in this case the US Congress) has declined to pass such laws does not mean the courts may do so.

Now, I know some people are going to not like my making a Separation Powers Argument here, but its the right argument to make and it is ultimately the argument at the heart of the PLCAA. If the legal and regulatory situation is not unconstitutional, then it is not the place of the courts to change it. For the courts to do so greatly oversteps their constitutional role.

Note: This last paragraph should not be read as my having said the courts should not act in civil rights cases. In such cases, the argument is that the current legal or regulatory situation violates the Constitution, and so it is entirely proper for the courts to intervene.

It used to be that way in Colorado. I can remember in college going to head shops in the mountains (Crested Butte, Carbondale) and there were signs at the entrance. “No Use of any marijuana-related paraphernalia terms. I’ve said this a few times in the past here. I’ll say it again just because. I really really really really hope Obama pulls off a massive “October Surprise” right before the 2016 election and just signs a stinkin’ executive order that removes cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act of 1970’s Drug Schedule entirely, thus making cannabis legal for possession and consumption for adults nationwide.

Cannabis is Schedule 1, the worst one.

The drug has a high potential for abuse. The drug has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States. There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug under medical supervision

Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

Mrs. FBW’s late brother grew his own pot. There was a nursery nearby where the owners and the customers would discuss the best way to grow ‘tomatoes’, which both knew meant pot. So, being a smartass, he asked about grow-lights and potting soil for ‘Medicinal Tomatoes’.

He was shown the door.

That happened to him a lot. He was ‘causey’ - joined Earth First, and Food Not Bombs, but then he’d get thrown out for being insufficiently humorless. For example, he got chucked out of Food Not Bombs for jokingly refering to it as ‘Food For Bums’.

It wasn’t that he didn’t care about the causes. It was that he couldn’t stay deadly serious for too long.

Well, fuck.

A Palestinian toddler has been killed in an arson attack in the West Bank, suspected to have been carried out by Jewish settlers, Israeli police say.

The 18-month-old boy was killed in the night-time attack on two homes in the village of Duma. His parents, brother and another child were injured.
Slogans in Hebrew, including the word “revenge”, were found sprayed on a wall of one of the firebombed houses.

Israel’s prime minister called the attack “reprehensible and horrific”. “This is an act of terrorism in every respect. The State of Israel takes a strong line against terrorism regardless of the perpetrators,” Benjamin Netanyahu said in a tweet.

However the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), which dominates the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, said it held the Israeli government “fully responsible for the brutal assassination” of the child, Ali Saad Dawabsha.

Coming up on the Jumu’ah (Friday Prayer) time in the West Bank. Traditionally this is often when shit touches off, as the first Friday Prayer immediately following such an incident lets out.

Today’s weather forecast, partly cloudy sunny 100F with a high chance of rage all hell breaking loose.

Fixed for greater accuracy.

According to local news, thousands of reserve soldiers are on standby and thousands of IDF forces are hunting for those responsible. This diabolical monstrosity comes less than 24 hours after a Jewish religious fanatic stabbed six people in the Jerusalem Gay Pride event, two of which remain in critical condition according to the latest news updates. The fanatic in question turned out to be the very same person behind the stabbing attack at the 2005 gay pride event a decade ago, who was released from prison only a couple of months ago (after getting a year deducted for good behavior I kid you not).

All in all, a seriously crappy day in the already-crappy corner of the region…

My damned facebook newsfeed is full of some stupid meme about the inventor of Coca Cola being a confederate soldier and liberals now want to ban Coke because, snert, florg, flaven, fart. Yes, because when I see a Coke bottle or logo I immediately think Civil War Racist Redneck Dipshit who can’t be bothered to read an actual book not written by Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity. Nooo, that would be the traitor flag that makes me think of those things you idiots.

Also too, down the road from me is a guy who’s been flying the Gadsden Flag and an American Flag since Obama got elected and this tea party nonsense started. Now he’s flying them both at half mast. I assume this is related to the Chattanooga shooting. I’d like to know where his half mast flags have been for all the other people killed in this protracted war we’re in. Or all the vets committing suicide.

I can’t take the stupid anymore. It’s fucking depressing. Oh, and someone I really liked a lot and was even roommates with at one time is now an Allen West fan. WTF is happening to people? Jesus.

Yesterday I posted a story about how a NJ State Trooper in Sparta opened fire on 3 teens who had mistakenly knocked on the home, getting the address wrong for a friend.

There’s some new details, including that the teens were detained for 9 hours before being released without being charged. The officer so far has not been subject to any discipline.

Oh, and the gun he used had a laser sight, and that was the first indication to the teens that something was amiss.

Trooper Kissinger Barreau told investigators he believed the teens were trying to break into his Sparta home, CBS New York reported. Police said they are investigating the shooting, but Barreau remains on active duty and hasn’t faced any charges.

One of the teens, 18-year-old Jesse Barkhorn, said he and his friends were dropping people off after a party Sunday. They mistakenly knocked on the trooper’s door, having mistaken it for a friend’s house, around 2 a.m., then ran back to their car after they heard a man screaming at them through the door.

As they turned their car around a cul-de-sac, they noticed a red dot following them in the darkness — and realized it was the laser sight of a firearm. Then they saw Barreau standing outside with his personal gun.

“At this point we’re freaking out, ‘It’s a gun, it’s a gun,’ ” Barkhorn said.

“I was like, ‘Dude, get out of here.’ “

As they drove away, the trooper gave chase and fired at least three shots at them, with one hitting the car’s front tires.

The cop says that he identified himself as a cop, but the teens say they never heard it since their windows were rolled up - and were trying to get away from a crazy dude who was pointing a gun at them.

Because burglars are always so conscious to knock on your door, in a populated cul-de-sac, before breaking in.

There was a cop funeral here in the bay area yesterday for a Hayward police officer who was killed in the line of duty. A miles-long funeral procession was followed by a service at Oracle Arena with 5000+ in attendance. Very impressive and very emotional but it makes me very conflicted regarding the police when I see something like that in contrast to totally unjustified murders of so many people by members of other police departments. Not only do these victims not get services like that, all too often, they can’t even get the justice they deserve. Something is very wrong in the country when its no longer clear who is the bad guy.

Apparently not CMP, which broke a bunch of laws with those “stings” that don’t even show any illegality on the part of PP. But PP should be charged with something because they’re evil and must be destroyed.

That’s the logic here. Which is to say, not logic, but a belief that PP must be destroyed and therefore anything goes in furtherance of that goal.

The New U.S. Law for Wingnuts.

1. The end justifies the means.
1a. All the rest of the old laws are for the others.
2. You are allowed to get yours any way you can.
2a. Don’t feel sorry for the others. They are only in the way.

Never mind that there was no actual evidence of wrongdoing uncovered, and the “Center” for “Medical” “Progress” had to doctor their videos to make it seem like there was.

FBI: “Hey Omar, how would you like to take this fertilizer, construct a bomb, and blow up a church?”
Omar: “No thanks, Mr. Totally Not An Agent. I’m a peaceful activist, not a terrorist. I have no violent intentions, and I certainly would not slaughter innocent people.”
FBI: “Whatever, Omar, you’re lame.”

FBI later releases “evidence” to the public…

So apparently one of those “pro-life” groups is saying a former head of PP admitted that they charged $100 for fetus parts while the shipping only actually cost $4-$10.

Were they sending medical samples by “media mail” or those 2nd Day Delivery boxes? Because I can’t think of any other way you could ship a package for that kind of money.
I wouldn’t think they’d arrive in very good shape. And using media mail would be fraud. The post office has a big sign about that… Well, about media mail only being for media. It says nothing about body parts.

Yeah. Also sounds like a certain Jewish rabbi from Nazareth.

“In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.”

Or in more detail:

“”When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,[g] you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life”

(both from Matthew, NRSV)

But the reality is that too many of them don’t care about doing what He taught only about mouthing what they claim he taught. A woman in need? A child without enough to eat? Those He’d care about. Them? Not so much, alas.

Bullshit. Styrofoam coolers for shipment cost $4 by themselves $4-10 might be the cost for the container and icepacks.

USPS? Priority mail small flat box is $6, and of course it won’t hold anything and it’s a 2-3 day shipment - clearly you can’t ship any living tissue THAT way.

If you want to send it FedEx overnight, a 10 lb box will cost you over $100.

Omaha Steaks, which sells perishables charges $40 alone for rush shipments, which are overnight, on top of their base shipping, which means you’re looking at least $55+ for a shipment.

UPS has very specific requirements for shipping biological materials. Same with FedEx.

There are dedicated services that operate medical tissue shipping, since we’re dealing with very specific needs and requirements. This isn’t some $4 shipping with a drop off in a mailbox. It’s anything but.

Thing to remember is that even by their standards he’s a loser. He’s already been convicted of a hunting violation here in Wisconsin that is, essentially, poaching (killing a black bear 40 miles outside of where he was licensed to do so). I’d rather only hunt for food but by the same token in some African nations much of the conservation budget comes from hunters and the culling that is necessary in the preserves happens that way as well. Combine that with the economic value and food value for the locals? I may not be interested in doing that kind of hunt, but I will not begrudge someone who does it ethically. t

Personally, I’d rather chase mallards or pheasants with Thanksgiving dinner in mind. But as long as they do more good than ill (unlike the Dentist), I’ll not get in the way. But cross the line?

And here we see why a Gish Gallop is so effective. The statement is (very, very nearly) patent bullshit that requires time to research things like shipping costs rather than addressing more substantive issues. If you ignore their (very, very nearly) patently bullshit statement, they will proclaim victory.

No - you might be thinking about Cato the Elder, who was well-known for concluding his speeches with the phrase, “Ceterum censeo Hitlerem esse delendam”.

He used to Tweet that all the time.

So, I found the miniseries Selling Hitler, all five parts, on YouTube, and it’s quite good - I’d never seen it before and I recommend it.

In a nutshell, the miniseries is based on the eponymous book by Robert Harris which deals with the infamous ‘Hitler Diaries’ hoax; one of the best examples of how journalistic integrity went right out the damned window in the pursuit of “the scoop of the century”.

Amazingly, even though they were crude forgeries, they briefly fooled Eberhard Jäckel and Hugh Trevor-Roper, though both later realized the ‘diaries’ were a fraud.

I keep seeing Conservatives defend and deflect, so they’re not the ones who are against criminal poaching. They’ll go on and on about law and order right up until the moment a Conservative commits a crime, then it’s all deflection.

From one of my dad’s emails…of course…

Tom’s Scrotum

The pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for answered prayers. Suzie Smith stood and walked to the podium. She said, “I have a praise. Two months ago, my husband, Tom, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn’t know if they could help him.” You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagine the pain that poor Tom must have experienced. “Tom was unable to hold me or the children,” she went on, “and every move caused him terrible pain.” We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Tom’s scrotum, and wrap wire around it to hold it in place.”

Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Tom.

“Now,” she announced in a quivering voice, “thank the Lord, Tom is out of the hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover completely.”

All the men sighed with unified relief. The pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say.

A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium.

He said, “I’m Tom Smith.” The entire congregation held its breath.
“I just want to tell my wife the word is sternum.”

The best part of the upcoming debate is this:

[Trump] boasts about spending no time preparing for the event, which will be broadcast on Fox News on Aug. 6, even as his aides have put together briefing papers for him on policy and pungent lines of attack. He already knows plenty about the issues, he says, so much that, rather than cramming, he will be in Scotland over the weekend at a golf tournament on one of his courses.

283
lawhawk  Jul 31, 2015 • 10:23:56am

A gentle reminder. While the officer involved shooting clock hasn’t reset to zero so far today, there are plenty of people who have been killed by cops and those cops have yet to face justice.

For instance:

Everything was caught on tape, and nothing the officers did in that case was appropriate, proper, or legal. They murdered Tamir Rice, and are still not facing charges.

That case was just as clear cut as the cop killing Sam DuBose. It was an illegal and unjust act. And justice continues to be delayed.

They did not back up his story, as was widely reported.

Both officers made comments at the scene but later were interviewed in depth by Cincinnati police officers about what they had witnessed, Deters said Friday.

Deters said in official interviews, neither officer said that they had seen Tensing being dragged as the initial incident report stated and both officers also testified in front of the Hamilton County grand jury.

“I fully agree with the decision of the Hamilton County Grand Jury. These officers were totally cooperative in the investigation and consistent in their statements,” Deters said. “There was some confusion over the way the initial incident report was drafted but that was not a sworn statement by the officers and merely a short summary of information.

“When the officers were specifically asked about what they saw and heard, their statements matched Tensing’s body camera video. These officers have been truthful and honest about what happened, and no charges are warranted.”
