Journalists Attend Secret Koch Brothers Meeting and Agree Not to Name Donors

What if the Koch brothers held a private meeting of super-rich Republican donors, and asked selected media organizations to attend — but only on condition that they not reveal the names of the super-rich donors?

Would the media agree to this condition?

Of course they did.

NEW YORK — Several news organizations gained rare access Saturday into a private gathering of influential Republican donors hosted by Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit organization backed by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch.

But journalists covering the three-day event, held at a luxurious California resort, had to agree to an unusual restriction. They weren’t allowed to report the names of any of the 450 donors attending without the individual’s permission.

The Washington Post’s Matea Gold disclosed in a Saturday night piece that her paper was “one of nine news organizations allowed in to cover the traditionally private confab, on the condition that the donors present not be named without their permission.” Politico’s Ken Vogel also noted the ground rules in his story published around the same time.

The Koch brothers, and affiliated groups, are expected to spend $889 million on the 2016 race. So the weekend gathering is a key stop for big-time Republican donors and presidential aspirants.

To sum up: the Koch brothers are spending nearly a billion dollars to tilt the 2016 election, and most of the media are agreeing to help them hide where the money’s coming from, in exchange for “access.”

Actually yes-and it started when he was governor of CA. Granted that he inherited a very considerable deficit, he promised budget reductions and instead raised taxes and instituted withholding taxes (an issue on which, allegedly, his “feet were set in cement.”) Leading to the comment about the sound we heard was that of cement cracking.

That’s the problem with journalists these days, they’re afraid to do actual journalism because they don’t want to lose their access to the powerful people they rely on to keep their jobs. It didn’t used to be this way and I bothers me terribly that this is where we’re at now.

Or, the shorter version: The media are now simply another commodity for the rich to buy and control.

Exactly, all this bullshit about a “free press” is a joke. Our press is bought and sold by the rich, with the understanding that press release that upsets them means a loss of access. So they editorialize the truth, they “present both sides” when really all they do is carry water for the person granting them access, and they excuse the rich while demonizing the poor.

Part of the problem stems from the fact the news organizations are not independent anymore. They’re part of giant, multi faceted media corporations and thus are beholden to whatever the media execs (who are likely NOT traditional news editors and have limited if any experience in actual journalism) want, which is whatever the sponsors want. It’s all a money game.

Elections are won in a similar fashion to entertainment and commerce: Advertising.

Seriously, people vote for a name they can identify. It’s all about feelings (regardless of how the self-proclaimed “conservatives” want to claim they are about principles.)

Why did Trump jump out to an early lead? Because people know about him, recognize his name.

Celebrity is about being known, at least some character that is being played is known if not the real person.

If candidates ran anonymously - no pictures, no names, but just wrote out their platform for people to read and vote upon - that would be an interesting experiment.

Still, even words have celebrity. There are magick words, that engender emotional responses.

Upon reflection, it even goes farther back than that. Right around the time the NYT started its whole little obsession with Hillary’s email server, the press began openly questioning if foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation had been used to buy influence with her during her time as Secretary of State. There were even demands for a Congressional investigation into whether or not there had been instances of quid pro quo.

But months later, you have the Kochs pretty much openly saying they’re looking to buy the election…and the press is happy with agreeing to keep donor identities confidential.

In the lawsuit filed in Brooklyn Federal Court, the men alleged religious discrimination under the Fair Housing Act, according to the newspaper.

The renovation at the 20-building complex began in 2012. The LeFrak Organization told the Daily News in a statement that the new systems were installed in compliance with federal Department of Housing and Community Renewal rules and regulations.

The lawsuit calls on LeFrak to have one door in each building accessible with a regular metal key, and for each building to have a Sabbath elevator that stops on every floor without having to push buttons.

The class war has been waged by the 1% against the 99% since the nation began. With the Unions we almost got to a place where we could make a better nation despite them, but the Big Lie that the Unions were “unneeded anymore” has gutted the nation and left us weak. Ripe for the picking by the oligarchy and the end of anything other than a pretense of democracy.

re: #39 CuriousLurker

Pressing an electrical switch is considered prohibited work on the sabbath.

Let me see if this gentile can remember the explanation I was given…

In the study of Torah and Talmud there is a concept of having a “wall around the Torah”. The idea is that to avoid violating the law, you set a rule as far away from the law you are trying to break as possible. This is like having the crops planted in the middle of a field and a fence some ways away from the edge of the crop so that a wandering animal can’t even stick it’s head through an nibble the edge of the crop being protected. Likewise, if the rule makes it difficult to getting close to the law that you are avoiding breaking. No one would say that having a slice of cheese on a hamburger is the same as boiling a kid in goats milk - the actual Torah commandment - but the idea is that not having any dairy and meat products together is how you fully respect the idea expressed by the commandment.

To go back to the switches - the elevator switches and light switches are considered work. I do not personally know the commandment that is related to them in the classical Orthodox understanding of honoring the sabbath but it is a very real one that is held by all the flavors of Orthodox I’ve known and some Conservative and Reform people I’ve known as well.

I hope this helps a little, I’ve doubtless butchered the subtleties of it badly.

Edit: I remember now that turning on or off electricity has been considered the same as lighting a fire and there is an injunction against that in the Torah (Exodus 35:3).

I’m trying to calculate cost, keeping in mind that rent in New York is already very high to begin with, even outside of Manhattan…

4,000+ units ÷ 20 buildings = approx. 200 units per building

Let’s just grab a number and say 20 units per floor (I seriously doubt there are that many). That means a modest estimate of 10 floors per building. I wonder how much it would cost to install 20 brand new 10-storey elevators at New York prices? Would the tenants demanding them be willing to pay out of their own pockets? Because I don’t see why the burden of the expense should fall to other tenants or property owners who don’t share their religious requirements/restrictions.

Thanks, but I’m not questioning the validity of the restrictions—they are what they are—we (Muslims) have plenty of restrictions too, though none related specifically to our sabbath day. What’s yanking my chain is the chutzpah of the two guys filing the lawsuit.

50
William Lewis  Aug 2, 2015 • 8:32:45pm

re: #47 CuriousLurker

An easier solution to this case would be to install a switch that when turned on prior to the start of the sabbath, simply makes the elevator stop at every floor for the duration. Afterwords the switch is flipped back and everything is back to normal.

The other option would be the classical Shabbot Goy - a non Jewish person who does the activities that the observant Jewish person is not allowed to do.

Do you have any idea how loudly New Yorkers complain when they dislike something? The first option would result in a cacophony from those who don’t need or want to stop at every floor from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday (or whenever it ends).

As for the second option, that’s doable, but the people needing the service should pay the salary of the elevator operator or, again, there would be a huge uproar. It’s quite different than paying for, say, braille signs/elevator buttons for the blind or handicapped accessible parking & entrances.

There are people from numerous religions in NYC—some I’ve probably never heard of. Can you imagine how crazy things could get if building owners had to accommodate any & all potential restrictions in that regard?

Bloomberg writer Melinda Henneberger asks:

What’s become of Mike Huckabee?

The point being that the current electoral process has driven Huckabee from being a religious, moderately conservative politician into one that is pandering to the hardest of the far right.

The political system in this country is geared to push people to extremes now, to engender emotional responses, to get hits online and mentions in tweets.

Thinking of the Koch Cabal, our political system is getting more immune from the humane, personal form of leadership of our past and is being driven into a nameless, generic, machine that is programmed by a few for the benefit of the few.

There are many examples in the past of the rich and powerful controlling elections in this country. That is not new. What is new is the intensity of interaction, the immediacy of response to the most banal of situations that can be exploited to poison the well of involvement.

No wonder participation rates are low. At least some people know, intuitively, they are being worked.

Carney politics on electronic steroids - that is what we have today.

As most of you know, I’m a poet on the side. As a palate cleanser tonight, here’s one I wrote for a dear friend who moved away not long ago.

FAREWELL

This isn’t a time for a goodbye,
it’s more like “see you soon”.
You’re leaving so very early,
taking off by the light of the moon.

I know in my heart that you earned this,
and the winds of change smell sweet.
But allow me a tear and a smile,
When I look at your empty seat.

Lord knows for sure that I’ll miss you,
It’s a bit somber watching you go.
But deep down inside I am happy,
because it’s what you wanted, I know.

Enjoy the days that are coming,
before long I’m sure you will find,
that the wonderful things that await you,
are as important as those left behind.

This is your new adventure,
Plant well on the fertile ground.
Take all the risks you need to
But make it back home safe and sound.

If ever you need me, I’ll be there,
if ever you call, I will run,
I’ll be right beside you as always,
doing what needs be to done.

A strong confidant and a brother,
A valued and humble friend.
We’ll walk through a thousand fires
And be standing tall at the end.

It sure won’t be the same without you,
but in spite of the things that I feel,
I know that you’re sent where you’re needed,
it’s here and it’s now and it’s real.

So I wish you well on your journey,
as you chase the light in the east.
You’ve already been through the famine,
Now be blessed with the feast.

People still labor under the illusion that news is the products the networks offer and that viewers are the customers.

That has nothing to do with the business model they operate under. News and programming is just window dressing, a means to attract viewers in order to make their real product, advertising time, more attractive to their customers, the advertisers.

lawhawk  Aug 3, 2015 • 6:03:03am

The GOP pretenders for the White House answers the call of its billionaire masters and then refuse to acknowledge who gave money to whom. But they will continue fleecing rubes who think that the rules that the billionaires want will somehow improve their lot (hint: they wont). It hasn’t for 30+ years. Trickle down hasn’t worked. It wont work. The wealth accumulated by the wealthy will remain in their hands, and they want ever larger amounts.

Even Donald Trump plays this game. He says he’s all for bringing jobs back to the US, but the moment he’s got an opportunity to do so, he decides adding to his wealth is more important. He chose to have his clothing lines made over in China and Mexico. He could have had them made here in the US, but didn’t. His excuse? It was not cost effective. Which is total BS considering that he’s got a premium line that could supposedly justify the extra costs. Rather he’d let someone overseas make his clothes for a fraction and he pockets the added revenue, rather than having them made here in the US where we could use more manufacturing jobs.

Trump’s a part of the problem - billionaires who want larger amounts of money and are willing to stop at nothing to get even more.

Heck, he also claims to be a friend to veterans, except when they happen to be street vendors near his buildings in Midtown. Then he complains that they’re dragging down the values of his properties, or making the high class neighborhood less so.

He’s a class warrior alright - out to protect his class. Veterans are just a weapon for him to use in pandering, but the more you examine what he says and does (just as with the rest of the GOP field) the more you see malware and vaporware among GOP policies.

Christie haz a sad because he was doing well for a time. Right around Hurricane Sandy, when he was the nation’s lifeguard and called for everyone to get off the beach.

Since that time, politics has been a bitch, because he’s done nothing to improve the state’s sorry fiscal condition. He’s punted on the transportation trust fund, meaning that he had to raid the Port Authority to get transit money to rebuild bridges (and possibly violate SEC rules in the process). Transit is a mess, the local economy here lags the nation, unemployment is higher than the national average, and he wouldn’t get reelected in NJ even if he were allowed to run again (term limited).

He’d rather say that he hasn’t raised taxes than do anything to fix the pension mess (including reneging on his own state law to properly fund pensions) or the transit fund. Housing is a mess, and he entered into a sweetheart deal with Exxon over a longstanding pollution lawsuit that was valued at up to $9 billion by the state but for which NJ was willing to settle for $225 million.

What if the Koch brothers held a private meeting of super-rich Republican donors, and asked selected media organizations to attend — but only on condition that they not reveal the names of the super-rich donors? Would the media agree to this condition? Of course they did.

Despite the double secret probation secrecy at this money-beg, Scott Walker just wishes the whole world of America knew how great this secret group really is:

Mr. Walker was similarly laudatory, saying he wished “the whole world could see what goes on here.”

“So many of you here aren’t here because of any interest on behalf of your personal finances or your industries, you’re here because you love America,” Mr. Walker said, before likening those in the Koch network to the everyday Americans he had met at Tea Party rallies across the country. Those people, he said, “may not have a lot of net worth, but they’re out fighting Obamacare, they’re fighting for their country.”

But I guess the liberal lamestream media isn’t being fair by not going all out to tell the Troof about this wonderful group.

Fourth Football of the Apocalypse  Aug 3, 2015 • 6:43:13am

More from that NYT article:

On Saturday, Carly Fiorina, the former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, and Mr. Walker addressed the gathering of about 450 people in back-to-back question-and-answer sessions, praising the Koch network and dismissing concerns about the outside money flooding into presidential politics. They were not shy about flattering the donors, some of whom are already financing their campaigns or super PACs. Mike Allen of Politico moderated all of the sessions.

“These are people who care deeply about our nation, and who are willing to put their time and their energy and their resources and their minds to the challenge of making a better nation,” Ms. Fiorina said, referring to the Koch network.

Hospitals in NYC metro area already have that feature. Some buildings in Williamsburg, Crown Heights, and Borough Park neighborhoods with significant religious Jewish populations already have the feature, which is pretty simply to install since it requires only a minor change to the elevator system.

The more difficult issue with Lefrak is the electronic key entry. There’s no easy workaround for a keyed entry system.

BTW, “installation” of Sabbath Elevators would almost certainly not involve constructing new ones - the usual method (as is done in Israel) is to simply re-program one (or more) elevators to run in Sabbath mode at the appropriate time - and then revert to “normal” operation when Shabbos is over.

But the larger issue here is the one of “religious accommodation” (especially in an hugely-diverse city like NY) - exactly how far a government or private business open to the public has to go to accommodate religious beliefs: it will be interesting to see what gets decided.

Campaign group Amnesty International says Brazil’s military police have been responsible for more than 1,500 deaths in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the last five years.

Amnesty says it has found evidence that police killings were often illegal, with officers shooting suspects who had surrendered or had been wounded.
There has been no response so far from Brazil’s military police.

Authentic wingnut gibberish: Texas Governor Abbott posts a petition supporting an investigation of Planned Parenthood:

Who is this petition supposed to persuade? As governor, Abbott can order such an investigation any time simply by giving the necessary instructions to the Texas Rangers. Perhaps there is a reason he does not want to do this? Though evil, Abbott is not a fool. Perhaps he realizes that the Rangers will come back with a report that the video is deceptively edited, there is no sale of tissue let alone “body parts” and that the producers behaved like common criminals.

I think he wants some sort of multi-state investigation or a federal one. Something of a longer duration, that can place sustained pressure of Planned Parenthood.

Easiest solution is for those few to take the stairs.

Here’s a story that’s going to be blown out of proportion. Though it ain’t good, its not the “bombshell” it may be promoted as:

Assailant in Garland, Texas, attack bought gun in 2010 under Fast and Furious operation

Five years before he was shot to death in the failed terrorist attack in Garland, Texas, Nadir Soofi walked into a suburban Phoenix gun shop to buy a 9-millimeter pistol.

At the time, Lone Wolf Trading Co. was known among gun smugglers for selling illegal firearms. And with Soofi’s history of misdemeanor drug and assault charges, there was a chance his purchase might raise red flags in the federal screening process.

Inside the store, he fudged some facts on the form required of would-be gun buyers.

What Soofi could not have known was that Lone Wolf was at the center of a federal sting operation known as Fast and Furious, targeting Mexican drug lords and traffickers. The idea of the secret program was to allow Lone Wolf to sell illegal weapons to criminals and straw purchasers, and track the guns back to large smuggling networks and drug cartels.

nstead, federal agents lost track of the weapons and the operation became a fiasco, particularly after several of the missing guns were linked to shootings in Mexico and the 2010 killing of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in Arizona.

Soofi’s attempt to buy a gun caught the attention of authorities, who slapped a seven-day hold on the transaction, according to his Feb. 24, 2010, firearms transaction record, which was reviewed by the Los Angeles Times. Then, for reasons that remain unclear, the hold was lifted after 24 hours, and Soofi got the 9-millimeter.

re: #258 Dr. Matt

Holy crap. Those crane operators must have been shitting themselves.

I think a lot of people were shitting themselves. It seems 20 were injured; this is a straight-up GoogleTranslate from the article:

Alphen aan den Rijn, two cranes and a large part fallen bridge and landed on four properties. According to the fire department, there are 20 wounded. It is unclear how they are added.

The accident happened at the Juliana Bridge, which will be thoroughly renovated. The cranes were among others on a shop with tweedehandsartikelen and a shop with paint and art supplies. How many people at that time were inside, is not clear.

Allowing the crane fell over, is still unclear. The taps were on a floating deck and hauled along the bridge portion. According to an eyewitness wobbled the pontoon before he fell tremendously. A spokesman for the Safety said that it seems that the bridge part is going to slide and thus the crane fell over.

The Dutch Safety Board (OVV) goes to Alphen aan den Rijn forward analysis of the collapse of the cranes.

Speaking of which, I wanted to explain my semi-absence this past week by announcing I finally managed to find a new job, working the front desk at one of our local oceanfront hotels. It’s been an absolutely exhausting week, as I don’t seem to have spent more than a few moments since Tuesday either at work, at home sleeping, or driving between. And the week was capped by my spending two consecutive nights dealing with an Explorer with a flat battery that was stuck on the top floor of the hotel’s parking garage.

On Monday, I was dancing with joy because I had a job. By end of shift Saturday night, I was too sore to even thinking of dancing. Such is life.

Fox pundit calls for election day ‘violence’ because Planned Parenthood is worse than Nazis

Frequent Fox News pundit Erick Erickson suggested recently that conservatives may have to launch a Civil War to stop Planned Parenthood from performing abortions.

“We have passed the point where Nazi comparisons are inappropriate,” Eric wrote in a blog post on Friday. “These are children. They entered into the world alive and were killed, chopped up, and sold bit by bit.”

“If Republicans are not willing to make this their hill to die on and even see the government shutdown to stop this, the Republican Party needs to be shut down,” the conservative blogger insisted. “The Party of Lincoln that rose from the ashes of a whig Party that would not stand up to slavery must stand up to this evil.”

Then we’ll see a schism, with half of those who pushed this shit wanting to divorce themselves from the attack by screaming that they never meant for it to happen, while the other half latch onto it to blame the President and “libruls” and declare that this is just further proof that America cannot allow abortion to continue as it’s leading to such violence.

good freaking grief.

A deputy sheriff shackled two elementary school children who have disabilities, causing them pain and trauma, according to a federal lawsuit filed today by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Children’s Law Center, and Dinsmore & Shohl.

The children, an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, were so small that the school resource officer, Kenton County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Sumner in Covington, Kentucky, locked the handcuffs around the children’s biceps and forced their hands behind their backs, the lawsuit charges. A disturbing video shows the boy, being shackled and crying out in pain. The young boy has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a history of trauma.

A girl was twice handcuffed behind her back by her biceps, also causing her pain. L.G. has ADHD and other special needs. Both children were being punished for behavior related to their disabilities. Neither was arrested nor charged with any criminal conduct. The lawsuit was filed on their behalf.

It’s very common. School districts are lazy and cash strapped. The combination is a disaster for special needs children.

In Madison, that liberal bastion, a middle school kid that causes trouble will be hauled off to their new special juvenile detention facility, in shackles, for a first offense. Parents will be eventually notified. That’s a big part of why we moved upstate. Combine this kind of laziness with the outside testing pressures of “Every Child Left Behind” and you get a nightmare for all kids, not just the special needs ones.

According to federal law, if a child has a Individualized Education Plan (IEP) they have extra rights to avoid this kind of treatment and receive accommodation for their disabilities. As you can see, most districts don’t give a fuck about federal law. Hayward WI, does and that’s why we live here. But even here it’s going to take a court case to get our son all of the help he needs because the state and county governments are refusing to pay for it.

I describe the system I was schooled in as ‘binary’. In it there were only two types of kids; normal and stupid. It appears that is still the case in a lot of places.

I wasn’t normal. Neither are any special needs student these days so they, according to the system’s logic, stupid. Which means they have to be kept under control lest they harm the normals.

It’s like The Chrysalids except they don’t kill the not normals.

So, this “one PP in Texas made $120,000 a month profit on abortions” 11ty!! info comes from one Abby Johnson, who is a chief research stategist for Lovely Lila’s Live Action (because of course she is.)

Her story is, of course, more full of holes than Swiss cheese (no record of an abortion on the day she supposedly had her “revelation”; the clinic where she worked doesn’t do the kind of abortion she supposedly witnessed, etc.

But, even taking her at her “word,” Johnson estimated the clinic in Bryan, Texas profited $350 on every abortion, which means to make $120,000 profit per month, the clinic would have had to perform about 12 abortions a day, 7 days a week in a 30-day month.

That’s a shitload of abortions. I think Ms. Johnson might be lying.

The pure, calculated evil of these people is breathtaking. Erickson has to know that the original video is hogwash, an editing job that would not fool an astute third grader. Yet, he is not satisfied with the video’s claims, mendacious as they are. He has to embellish them with additional details he has apparently pulled out of some putrid abscess in his brain, then uses this fabrication to support a call for lethal violence.

Obviously, he and the others do this for money: The more lurid the rhetoric, the more hits from the criminally minded RWNJ masses. I understand the need for money— I clawed my way out of a California slum to get where I am—-but I would rather lose everything I have and live in a refrigerator crate than accuse innocent people of these kinds of heinous crimes against children.

One night I took a bag of garbage out to toss it in the can. I opened the lid and saw a large mound of fur, dropped the bag and quickly backed off, because I knew what it was.

The lid on the can slowly rose, and out climbed an enormous racoon - I’d say he must have weighed 50 pounds easy.

He climbed up on the rim of the can and stared me down for a full minute, then climbed down from the can and lumbered off. Haven’t seen him since.

Them guys do not give a fuck. Cute as they can be, they scare the crap out of me.

ST. LOUIS • The construction of a riverfront football stadium does not need voter approval in the city before using city tax dollars, a judge ruled on Monday.

St. Louis Circuit Court Judge Thomas Frawley declared invalid the city ordinance requiring a public vote. Moreover, Frawley ruled, the placement of the new stadium, along the riverfront just north of downtown, does not break a state law requiring the building to be “adjacent” to the convention center — it is close enough, he wrote.

“‘Adjacent’ has commonly been interpreted by Missouri courts to mean ‘near or close at hand’ and as ‘not necessarily meaning contiguous,’” Frawley wrote in his ruling, “i.e. not necessarily meaning touching each other or immediately next to each other.”

Ummm indeed. A waste of money that St. Louis doesn’t have to go to a team that is owned by a billionaire who would rather have someone else pay for his team’s stadium (because the existing stadium isn’t opulent enough or give him enough of the proceeds from all sales, including luxury boxes).

I don’t get how the judge could rule that the municipal ordinance is somehow inapplicable, or that adjacent means close enough. I somehow get the sense that the judge really wants to keep the Rams in town, and doesn’t care that the law and facts don’t support that outcome, so he ruled them inapplicable. That’s some judicial activism right there.

I was in STL last year just days before the whole Michael Brown shooting occurred, and there were signs all over the place that this was a city that was deeply in trouble. A new stadium for a billionaire owner isn’t going to fix it. The existing stadium is already downtown. Tearing down the adjacent Interstate (literally and figuratively) would be a bigger fix than a new stadium. Those highways make the downtown and waterfront entirely cut off from the rest of STL.

It balkanizes the city and MO officials seem hell bent on pouring more concrete and lane miles than anyone else, despite the fact that the city simply doesn’t need them. It’s insane. There are highways that are wider than some of the CA freeways (heck, wider than pretty much every NYC metro area highway other than the GSP or Turnpike) with a fraction of the traffic at rush hour. There’s such a waste of resources that it’s staggering.

And yet there are people who still think that everything starts and stops with a sports team and a billionaire owner who can afford to build a stadium on his own, but who would rather threaten cities for a stadium or else they move.

The stadium racket is just that. A racket.

stlouisfed.org

Note too - that’s from April 2001, the STL Fed, and that the amount of new stadiums financed/paid by taxpayers has grown, despite no actual sign that it benefits taxpayers.

Has financing sports stadiums ever been the best alternative? Research shows “No.” In their book, Noll and Zimbalist—along with 15 other collaborators—examined the local economic development argument from a wide variety of angles. In every case, the conclusions were the same. “A new sports facility had an extremely small (perhaps even negative) effect on overall economic activity and employment. No recent facility appears to have earned anything approaching a reasonable rate of return on investment. No recent facility has been self-financing in terms of its impact on net tax revenues. Regardless of whether the unit of analysis is a local neighborhood, a city, or an entire metropolitan area, the economic benefits of sports facilities are de minimus.10

In fact, research has shown that subsidizing sports facilities usually does not affect a city’s growth and, in some cases, may even hurt growth since funds are being diverted from alternatives with higher returns. In a 1994 study that examined economic growth over a 30-year period in 48 metropolitan areas, Robert Baade found that of the 32 metro areas that had a change in the number of sports teams, only two showed a significant relationship between the presence of a sports team and real per-capita personal income growth. These cities were Indianapolis, which saw a positive relationship, and Baltimore, which had a negative relationship.

For a region as troubled as Greater STL, the money is and should be better used for other things - from education to actual job opportunities to fixing a broken infrastructure system.

He can cut a deal with the Coliseum, he can cut a deal with the Rose Bowl, he can cut a deal with UCLA, but no-way no-how is Los Angeles going to give up the space and pay the construction for another stadium. They have sufficient.

Kroenke is pushing for a new stadium in Inglewood (he already has the designs made up). He has a meeting with the NFL owners this month about it.

If STL wants to do more to fix their downtown, get rid of the endless parking lots that surround the stadiums, build housing or mixed use developments.

There’s nothing wrong with the Raymond James Stadium, except for an owner who feels entitled to a new one built on someone else’s dime as long as he profits from it.

re: #160 Jay C

BTW, “installation” of Sabbath Elevators would almost certainly not involve constructing new ones - the usual method (as is done in Israel) is to simply re-program one (or more) elevators to run in Sabbath mode at the appropriate time - and then revert to “normal” operation when Shabbos is over.

Interesting, that could work as long as it didn’t inconvenience the other tenants. I didn’t really think of the possibility (maybe even probability) that the buildings would have more than one tenant elevator (maybe because my building here in Jersey has 5 floors + basement—50+ units—with one all-purpose elevator).

But the larger issue here is the one of “religious accommodation” (especially in an hugely-diverse city like NY) - exactly how far a government or private business open to the public has to go to accommodate religious beliefs: it will be interesting to see what gets decided.

THIS. It was my reason for posting the story in the first place. As an observant Muslim I have no problem with Jews or anyone else following their rules as long as it doesn’t get in my way. Likewise, I wouldn’t want to cause inconvenience or extra expense to non-Muslim tenants to accommodate my religious beliefs, nor would I expect a building owner to foot the bill to do so. None of them signed up for the Muslim thing, y’know? That’s on me.

It is called Taking Responsibility for Your Actions. If you wanna be proud of slaughtering defenseless critters for sport and post photos of it, you should be thick-skinned enough to take the harassment.

If people are sending death threats, that is going to far, but anything up to that is Fair Game, so to speak.

The vast majority of women I’ve known in my life had their very first experience with women’s health at a Planned Parenthood facility.
Why?
Because PP is very affordable (especially as is often the case) for those without insurance. It’s also the place to go when teens and young women have little idea what is happening with their bodies (especially when frightening things are happening, and I’m not talking about potential pregnancies) as a result of an extreme lack of education, either at school, at home, or both.

Also, the folks at PP are completely non-judgmental. There is no shaming, no question is “stupid”.
As a result, most women go to PP the first time on the high recommendations of their friends who have been there before them.

As a result, most women go to PP the first time on the high recommendations of their friends who have been there before them.

And the ‘alternative’ offered by those who don’t like PP is a false-front ‘clinic’ distributing lies at no cost initially to a woman, but the lack of real attention could result in her death. It is of note that the ‘pro-lifers’ have NO free OB-GYN clinics for pregnant women, nor free delivery clinics, or anything of that sort.
