Joan Walsh on the Rise of the Disgusting “Cuckservative” Slur

Bubbling up from the fever swamp
Politics • Views: 65,894

Joan Walsh has an interesting piece on the rising popularity of the gross term “cuckservative” on the right, and what it actually means: The GOP Crack-Up Continues: The Raging Civil War Over the Disgusting “Cuckservative” Slur.

“Cuckservative” started showing up in my Twitter mentions last week, after I suggested Donald Trump supporters might not be the brightest bulbs. As I clicked around, I came to a shocking conclusion: I’ve been uncharacteristically downplaying the amount of racism and misogyny powering the right today. The spread of the epithet “cuckservative” is a sign that the crudest psycho-sexual insecurity animates the far right.

“Cuckservative,” you see, is short for a cuckolded conservative. It’s not about a Republican whose wife is cheating on him, but one whose country is being taken away from him, and who’s too cowardly to do anything about it.

OK, that’s gross and sexist enough already, but there’s more. It apparently comes from a kind of pornography known as “cuck,” in which a white husband, either in shame or lust, watches his wife be taken by a black man. Lewis explains it this way: “A cuckservative is, therefore, a race traitor.”

This is not merely a new way to shout “RINO.” It’s a call to make the GOP an explicitly racist party, devoted to the defense of whites. It’s no accident it’s taken off in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign launch/performance art, where he attacked illegal Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and “criminals.”

Joan is absolutely on the money here; the term bubbled up from the white supremacist fever swamp that powers so much of the modern right wing base — the racist contingent that played such a large part in my own decision to renounce the right years ago.

White supremacist Richard Spencer makes the motivation behind this term exceedingly clear:

The #cuckservative meme doesn’t make any sense without race. It’s all about race…What’s powerful about #cuckservative is that it is call for a racially conscious politics—and not the kind of shot-gun spray muckraking that Johnson specializes in.

And it’s also very interesting to see some of the bloggers who ignorantly mocked my concerns about the rise of racism and white supremacism and attacked me for pointing it out suddenly beginning to notice what’s been happening in their precious conservative movement:

By last week, alarm about the use of the blatantly racist slur was beginning to spread on the right. The blogger Ace of Spades is a little concerned about what all of it means for the conservative movement, writing:

I am right now thinking that there are more white supremacists than I previously acknowledged, and am currently up in the air as to whether to dismiss this solely as a fringe-of-the-fringe phenomenon.

Sure, just keep telling yourself it’s “solely a fringe-of-the-fringe phenomenon.”

The writing has been on the wall for a while now, but the party base has decided its time to make it perfectly clear. The Republican party is now a Christian White Nationalist Party.

The writing has been on the wall for years, as every other month has brought a story to the attention of the GOP’s white base about how they’re slowly receding into the minority. Whether it be polls that show their hatred is no longer held by the majority of voters, to the realities that they’re dying out faster than they’re being replaced, that the younger voters are not carrying with them the same hatreds and biases.

It was going to reach a boiling point eventually and this seems to be it. Trump did what not even Cruz could do: He popped the boil on the ass of American democracy that is the modern GOP and let out all of the foul-smelling contents inside.

It’s “solely a fringe-of-the-fringe phenomenon.” Right up until the point where it’s taken over the right wing. The extremists have taken over, and you were silent Ace. You’re doing some soul searching now isn’t helping. Calling out the extremists and purging them from the GOP is the only fix, or else the party will indeed be lost (as it should be based on their current trajectory into the fever swamps of conspiracy mongering and racist claptrap).

There are far too many racists and misogynists in the GOP elites - the very ones who set the party tone and tenor - for it to be simple fringe phenomenon.

We’re not talking some local yokel who is talking about legitimate rape or other similar language. We’re talking members of congress. We’re talking US Senators. We’re talking about candidates for president under the GOP banner.

They’ve gone full metal extremist, in pandering and catering to the extremists that make up the core of the GOP in the primary voters.

Ace and others have aided and abetted this lunacy because of one simple policy: “Party Before Country.” They didn’t care what it was they were allowing through the gate, just so long as they packed the rows full with people who wore a “R” by their name. Well, now the crazies run the asylum and guys like Ace who once thought the crazies to be the “fringe-of-the-fringe” are waking up to the horrors that they’re wrought. But the same policy that allowed all those crazies in won’t allow them to be removed, because the crazies not only have a shitload of cash, but they’ve also rigged the game so that it’s virtually impossible to throw them out. The crazies are being elected by crazies, supported by crazies, and running a non-crazy against them isn’t working. The only alternative now is to support a Democrat, and we know Ace would sooner scoop his eyes out with a rusty spoon than do that.

In an election cycle, if he’s lucky, Ace will be able to style himself a “Good Conservative,” as one who went along with the horrors of the Tea Party because he didn’t know any better.

Angus King of Maine speaking now in support of PP asking how defunding PP providing birth control will prevent abortions.

According to an “Ban Abortions By Any Means” wingnut I’ve been arguing with today, doing away with Planned Parenthood won’t cause any problems because Medicaid and the ACA will cover everything but abortions. Except:

A) She acknowledges Medicaid’s cover is based upon qualifying for it, so already many women will be left out.

B) Millions of Americans are not covered by Medicaid who should be because their states refused the ACA funds for expanding it.

C) She supports a political party which is openly arguing for turning Medicaid into block grants, which means states will take the money and use it however they like, which means many of the services will likely see money stripped away.

And yes, it goes without saying that she also opposes the ACA and wants it gone.

Yet, she can’t understand why I’m calling her a liar for her position and thinks it’s because I’m okay with “killing babies.”

57

It’s because the issue is not fetal tissue, it’s abortion and the GOP wants to use the former as a means of punishing PP for legally providing the latter. Much like ACORN, it wasn’t about accusations of their helping pimps skirt the law, it was that the organization helped those people that the GOP felt needed to be punished for not making the “right” choices.

As disgusting as this is, I think we need to make conservatives totally OWN this. They built it. They let it happen, threw all kinds of semi composted, stinky, rotten, decomposing shit on it and allowed it to grow. When you have sitting elected officials calling the POTUS and any liberal they choose sworn enemies of America, this is what happens. It’s all over radio, TV, internet and newspapers, and worse, people have been hurt and murdered over it. Every single elected official with an (R) after their name needs to stand up and denounce it now or be complicit and called on that complicity. You know what I think? I think any conservative not pure enough for these hate fueled assholes is getting death threats and they’re scared to death of the monster they created. The ones with a teeny shred of decency left that is. I can’t prove that of course, but I’d be willing to bet that they get threats daily if they don’t do exactly as these fools think they should. They need to expose that too, and they would if they had decency and courage.

This madness has torn up families, set neighbors against each other and it’s eroding the country from the inside out. It needs to stop. And it’s not going to happen even if a Republican does end up as POTUS ((((SHUDDER))), because no one will be hateful and shitty enough to feed this horrible monster.

Male racists are worried that “their” women will be “ruined” by minorities. It’s really about breeding. Apparently, when it comes to breeding animals, if you’re worried about keeping a breed “pure” once a female is impregnated by a mutt (or other breed), she is no longer good for breeding purposes (at least within that breeding cycle). So, ultimately, it all comes down (once again) to sex - specifically people they don’t approve of having it.

As for why they’re thinking of what “their” women are doing, it’s probably partly projection (I’ll sleep with whatever, so she will too) and partly an inferiority complex (what if they’re better than me?).

OMG, what a bucket-o-derp! Even if that “$1.5 billion” figure is accurate, does he not recall that ISIL got all that “US military equipment and ordnance” in Iraq because the Iraqis threw it away when they fled? And that the Houthi rebels in Yemen (who are probably not “Iran’s”, but never mind) are unlikely to have gotten much gear from that source, since they and ISIS/ISIL are bitter enemies?

But hey! It’s another opportunity for a cheap jibe at Obama, facts-be-damned: too god to pass up…

DERP Break:

Great article on former BU Hockey player Travis Roy (Boston Globe, likely paywalled)

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the young man that was paralyzed 11 seconds into his first shift in his first college hockey game 20 years ago (where the hell does the time go?).

His foundation raises money for spinal cord injuries:

He threw himself into the foundation that bears his name and it has handed out $3.5 million worth of equipment — wheelchairs, lifts — to more than 1,000 people with spinal cord injuries. It has given more than $2.5 million to research.

Almost every day, he reads letters from people pleading for help.

“It’s never just the wheelchair,” he said. “It’s a little piece of independence, a little piece of dignity.”

There was a logger in New Hampshire, Wayne Snow. He was paralyzed in a logging accident. Travis read his letter and bought him a wheelchair with tank tracks. Wayne Snow is back at work, logging in his wheelchair.

Good people doing good things.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled DERP. Already in progress.

Thanks to all. There were a million times when I needed to distract myself. You have all been such a big help. With a little luck, I’ll pass the boards lickety split, get a job and keep myself busy.
Fact is taking care of people is very important to me. I took good care of my employees when I had my little factory, and I should have done this earlier than I did. I fought with every thing I had, largely against myself, and more than once I was on the outside looking back in, but I got back in. Finally, with the last test and probably my life on the line, I squeezed through with two points to spare.
You know, that was probably a little closer than it should have been, but I’m not setting foot anywhere near that campus to look at the test. It’s a line drive in the scorer’s book.

“Wow, who knew that playing up to the most racist elements that America and the GOP has to offer would lead to white supremacists infesting the Republican party?”

Fucking idiots. Every goddamn one of them. I’m tempted to post this over at Ace of Spades, but I don’t want to waste the electricity.

The thing is, appeals to empathy and conscience won’t work with the GOP because most of them don’t possess these things. They see a story like that one and think, “Well, that must have been God’s will.”

But it was Mr Peskov’s choice of timepiece that caught the Russian media’s attention.

The watch - a chunky, rectangular item featuring a stylised skull - is visible on Mr Peskov’s right wrist in a photograph from Saturday’s wedding.

Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption crusader and opposition leader, identified it as a Richard Mille RM 52-01. Only 30 have been made and - according to a boutique Mr Navalny contacted for a quote - they retail at just under £400,000.

“There were so many photos of it prior to the ‘wedding of the year’ that we decided to ask the question publicly,” wrote Mr Navalny on his blog. “Where could the head of state’s press secretary get a watch worth four times his annual income?”

That watch is the horological equivalent of truck nuts. It’s the kind of watch that you’d expect to find available at a red neck gas station for $19.95, next to the confederate flag bandannas and shredded beef jerky in sold tins so kids can pretend they’re chewing real tobacco. The fact that any human being, anywhere, can look at that classless piece of utter shit and think it’s worth over $600,000 sums up all that is wrong with modern society.

OT, but fuck it. I had to get an 86 on my final final to get my BSN degree, and I got 88. I thought I did better, but I’m taking the diploma and running away with it before they can add anything to the curriculum. This crazy plan just might work.
My knees went weak when the grade popped up and I teared up for a sec, but next stop, boards. I hadn’t even considered that there might be a future for me until now.

Dear god do I know that feeling, I had to get a 69 on a test X or else I had to explain to my parents why I was one course credit short of being able to graduate…

The nights between when I finished that test and when I finally got my grades were far from the most restful of my life.

No, it’s normal. The speeches aren’t for fellow Senators, they’re for their constituents. Senate “debate” is not about actual debating, its about spouting talking points in the proper fashion.

The ones ranting on and on about the videos are evil fear mongerers and they deserve all of my contempt.
I can say that because McConnell and Paul are my useless pandering asshole senators who aren’t in DC to represent anyone but themselves. They don’t care about their constituents, they only care about the money.

That watch is the horological equivalent of truck nuts. It’s the kind of watch that you’d expect to find available at a red neck gas station for $19.95, next to the confederate flag bandannas and shredded beef jerky in sold tins so kids can pretend they’re chewing real tobacco. The fact that any human being, anywhere, can look at that classless piece of utter shit and thinks it’s worth over $600,000 sums up all that is wrong with modern society.

The fact that the poor thing was kidnapped from Elfreth’s Alley, one of the most historic streets in the whole city, somehow makes it worse.

I was commenting on the philly.com article. Among other things, since people seemed to insist on calling it a social experiment. Anyway, every encounter has two primary possibilities, harm and no harm. (A subset of no harm would be taking it somewhere for pictures). Now I’m not sure what date they were trying to collect, but with every encounter there was a small but varying possibility of harm. Elfreth’s Alley on a late Saturday night was probably one of the higher risks of harm.

I sort of get the feeling the GOP senators realize they are dancing on a fine high wire knowing if they actually kill PP they may kill their careers by having the GOP women that are not fundies dump them and also increase the Democrat and Independent women that might not vote turn out and dump them.

I think even they realize that there’s no chance that this effort will go anywhere. Even if they manage to overcome a filibuster, there’s no chance it will earn the President’s signature. And they simply do not have the votes to override a veto. And if they try to push this further by going so far as some have suggested, namely shutting down the government, then they’re gonna get roasted alive.

When a poll says x% of voters prefer such and such, it seems to emphasize that these are likely voters. Voter ID is coming online more and more, so just because you’re registered and you tell the pollster you’re going to vote doesn’t mean you will actually get to cast that ballot.

that’s part of the inferiority complex.

In Black Like Me, the story of author John Howard Griffin’s trip through the south disguised as a black man in 1959, Griffin goes into quite a bit of detail about this particular concern among southern white men. According to Griffin, it was practically an obsession among the white men who picked him up hitchhiking, with one actually asking Griffin to expose himself just “to be sure.”
There was one exception to all the racism and general craziness Griffin encountered from whites: An ordinary working man whose great love for his young children seemed to have spread to his attitude toward humanity in general.

Hey, Senator…tell us about how Oklahoma supports the born children and feeding them and educating them.

Oh…he has an anecdote about a 14 ounce at birth babbie…a BABBIE THAT PP WOULD HAVE HARVESTED!!11!!

Oh and he compares it all to Seaworld.

O_o

I thank you for the ongoing recap—I just don’t have the intestinal fortitude to watch it today. (Too busy fighting with a moron city council member over the upcoming offshore drilling resolution vote. Needless to say, I’m against it, and he’s 100% for it, citing bogus statistics, spurious polls and laughable reports.)

It’s actually decently accurate. Jesus would not feel welcome in the US Congress, whichever house He went into and whichever party controlled that house.

But that’s just life: Politicians are weasels.

Must be time for some balancing.

First of all, I doubt a return would come packaged as “Jesus” depicted by white religions. How could he be an ordinary man if he was easily seen as the second coming?

This is the problem with religious iconography…it fails to capture the real point of him being just a man. They always have to have the halo and other things to make him different from everyone else when he was not.

Second, I really doubt he would be showing up in Congress to chew on many Democrats when he would have more than enough issues with the current Republicans. You know, go for the big problems first.

Town Hall ran a post, supposed to be satirical, that California was going to do away with Bosses and Managers.

They had to follow up with an Editor’s Note:

Editor’s note: The following column is satire. Townhall apologizes for not making that explicitly clear at the time of publication and regrets this error.

I guess too many wingnuts took them seriously. Once the correction was issued, they were all “What does it say about THEM that WE so easily believed this?”

Right Wing Satire: No matter how crazy it sounds, wingnuts will believe it.

Left Wing Satire: No matter how crazy it sounds, reality will catch up, if it hasn’t already.

I cannot foresee a scenario where the 2022 Winter Games will not be an epic disaster.

Awarding Beijing the Winter Olympics came on the heels of stories about the wretched/unsafe water quality at a number of the venues in Rio for next summer’s games. I understand the fairness aspects, but there are also safety concerns on any number of levels that need to be considered as well.

Yes he is.

Christie probably has little chance at the gop nod anyway, due to the fact he hugged Obama 3 years ago. Plus there’s that little matter of the bridge scandal, which appears to be petty small-minded political revenge.

However, Trump is also making Christie less relevant now. There’s just not that much space in the primaries for two megalomaniac loudmouths from NY/NJ. Trump has essentially stolen what little thunder Christie had left in him, and turned up the wattage to boot. Being the “straight talking” attack dog was supposed to be Christie’s shtick, but Trump the Entertainer is way better at it. All of which leaves Christie with nothing left in his bag of tricks.

“It’s a call to make the GOP an explicitly racist party, devoted to the defense of whites.”

Since the rise of the Southern strategy under Nixon, hasn’t the GOP always been a party explicitly devoted to the White race? Let’s keep it real. Since the taking over of the Republican Party by the Tea Party “Patriots”, it’s just become more obvious.

What catapulted Trump to the #1 position? His racist comments about Mexican immigrants.

Unfortunately, her war probably will only be successful against blue state Republicans. Throughout red states, abortion restrictions are on the rise. Balloon Juice just reported on Jindal’s strike against Planned Parenthood in Louisiana. I’m sure other Republican Governors will follow his lead.

And Angus King cuts to the heart of the matter: it’s not about abortion or family planning…it’s about fetal tissue, which is legal and it has nothing to do with 97% of the services that PP provides.
“It’s like attacking Brazil after Pearl Harbor.”

Will Democratic operatives be smart enough to use this anti-reproductive rights vote against the GOP next year? I hope so. An attack on PP is an attack on access to birth control for millions of American women. Republicans should pay a price for their votes in Nov 2016.

Try to find opportunity. Where there is weakness, there is room for growth. Take a personal inventory and identify your strengths. In the meantime, try to find a gig that will keep the roof over your head. Even if it’s a menial job, do it as best as you can, for a lot of reasons. Eyeing other people’s situations will only distract you from the task ahead (and it won’t help you feel any better anyway).
Life will get ugly. Fight for today, fight for tomorrow, fight for yourself, fight for the people you care about, and fight for the people you don’t care about.

Hard to believe that you worked at a call center that didn’t have scripts or resource materials to answer most common questions, but that aside:
You’ve been at call center jobs for a while, so acknowledge the parts you are not good at (my guess is that it’s just dealing with strangers on the phone), but identify the parts you are good at. There must be parts you are good at or they would have fired you a long, long time ago.

Acknowledge your weaknesses and work on improving those.
Identify your strengths and use them as a starting point for your next move.

Don’t even start to compare yourself with people in DC who are in grad school. That’s a waste of energy. You are you, not them, not anyone else.

Your degree is in geography or maps or something similar, if I remember correctly?
How about trying something creative, like a short illustrated children’s book to start with? Something fun…nothing to do with historical wars and genocide.
Don’t try to recreate Dora Explorer or Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego but something along those lines. Maybe a simple history of early Arabic exploration and travels to get started (but again, no wars, something uplifting and positive of which there is very much).

Or maybe even a beginner’s guide to mapwriting and how to incorporate all thing geographic (Step-By-Step Guide to Map Your Own Backyard).

I was never a White Supremacist, but I had more than a healthy amount of exposure to that worldview thanks to my involvement in the punk rock subculture as a younger man.

Still, I never used to see White Power dog whistles on mainstream conservative media back then (1990s). I first noticed the occasional references to Odinism, “race realism”, The Bell Curve and RAC bands after showing up in the comments sections of NRO and Townhall following 9/11, and things really got cooking following the 2008 election.

Today, said comments sections read like Stormfront.

I’ve seen the term used online, but I assumed it was liberals making fun of conservatives. I had no idea about its darker hidden meanings. I think liberals should co-op the term and use it against conservatives instead. Serves them right.

Also the mentions of the Olympics. I have to say I think its weird how the BRICS keep hosting the last few big sporting events (minus Vancouver and London games).

Check this out: Beijing Summer Games 2008, South Africa World Cup 2010, Sochi Winter Games 2014, Brazil World Cup 2014, Rio Summer Games 2016, Russia World Cup 2018 and now Beijing Winter Games 2020. Only India has not hosted a major sporting event. They tried with the Commonwealth Games, but it was a bit of a disaster.
