FBI Arrests Anti-Government Extremists in NC, Building Bombs - UPDATE: Inspired by “Jade Helm” Conspiracy Theory

Here we go again. How long until Jim Hoft tries to label these crazies as “leftists?” FBI: Men Arrested for Making Explosives to Resist Government.

You know he will.

Reports say that law inforcement received tips that Walter Litteral, 50, Christopher Barker, 41 and Christopher Campbell, 30, were attempting to manufacture explosive or destructive devices.

Law enforcement were reportedly told the men were reconstructing live grenades from “dummy grenades” sold as military artifacts at stores.

Authorities believe the men were preparing for the possibility that the government intended to use armed forces to impose martial law, which they planned to resist.

The FBI also reportedly became aware that the men wanted to manufacture pipe bombs.

Other defensive items were said to be purchased from stores, including a .338 caliber rifle, hand-held radios with throat microphones for communication, military issue Kevlar helmets, body armor vests and balaclavas (a form of cloth headgear designed to expose only parts of the face).

UPDATE at 8/3/15 8:24:12 pm by Charles Johnson

More information now coming out; according to court records, these three were inspired to start building bombs by the “Jade Helm” conspiracy theory.

Court records showed a controversial military training exercise in Texas and other southwestern states may have been fueling their violent ideas.

The exercise is called Jade Helm, a two-month long special operations training exercise with members of U.S. Army Special Operations Command and service members from the military’s four branches, according to the U.S. Army.

The exercise has drawn conspiracy theorists to believe martial law will be declared and civilian groups to keep an eye on the military in response.

Jade Helm is mentioned in a federal complaint against Barker, Campbell and Litteral.

Creation of the toy comes after an American dentist was accused of killing the well-known lion named Cecil in Zimbabwe in an allegedly illegal hunt. The incident set off a worldwide uproar.

Which raises an interesting point. The Founders gave us the 2nd Amendment in order to protect/defend ourselves against a totalitarian and/or oppressive government. If the citizenry is to be able to protect/defend itself against such a government, should not the citizens have the same weapons as government?

WWII veteran, 88, batters burglar in his house at midnight over the head with his WALKING STICK

A pensioner sent a burglar packing empty handed by battering him over the head - with his walking stick.

World War Two veteran Tom Bull was asleep when the thief burst into his bungalow in Kingswinford, West Midlands, after breaking in through a window in the middle of the night.

The burglar threatened the 88-year-old and demanded cash before throwing him to the floor in his hallway.

ut Mr Bull followed the masked man into his kitchen where he grabbed hold of his walking stick and gave him a ‘good old wallop.’

Despite the thief pleading ‘please don’t hit me’ the great-grandfather chased him around the house with the wooden cane.

SNIP

Mr Bull, who served with the Welsh Guards during the Second World War, said he was not going to let burglars get the better of him without a fight.

The Welsh Guards battalions served in some hard fought battles: Anzio (where the WG battalion was part of a Guards brigade that fought a regiment of German and Italian paratroopers to a standstill), the breakout past Caen in Normandy, when the Guard Armoured Division saw off Michael Wittmann and at least four other Tigers and their crews, and in the Frozen Hell of the north shoulder of the Ardennes ‘bulge’, where the Guards worked to roll back the Germans.

A man who lived through that and came back sane is not going to fear some lowlife hood.

And since we’re talking about guns, here’s a rifle liberal folks might enjoy reading about:

John F. Kennedy’s M1 Garand

Back in 1959, the Director of Marksmanship for the CMP was Colonel John K. Lee Jr, a man who very likely would have been made aware that a young upstart senator from Massachusetts had been selected to receive an M1 Garand. That senator was John F. Kennedy. At that time, the DCM was distributing the rifles based on a lottery system, with only several hundred to a thousand being sold in a given year. Many folks would wait years for a random rifle selected from the surplus kept at various depots, but it appears that Kennedy’s clout granted him quick access to the very desirable rifles, and a very special one at that.

This M1 started from one of those depots, the Erie Ordnance Depot in Port Clinton, OH to be precise, but was far from a random selection. The rifle picked for Senator Kennedy bears a late production 6+ million serial number and is a Type 1 National Match M1 Garand, that has been rebuilt to a Type 2. After the NM rifle “happened” to be selected for Kennedy, it also “happened” to make its way to Master Sergeant Raymond E Parkinson, a gunsmith assigned to the Second U.S. Army Advanced Marksmanship Unit at Ft. George C. Meade in Maryland. Once there, much of the work took place that can be seen on the rifle to this day. In fact, COL Lee was kind enough to detail such changes in a letter he sent to Senator Kennedy after the rifle was received. The modifications, as listed in the communication, are:

1. Adjusted the trigger in order to provide an exacting trigger pull for each shot fired.
2. Blued all metal parts to prevent rust and enhance the beauty of the weapon.
3. Applied a moisture-proof silicon finish to the stock.
4. Applied a glass-bedding compound to the recoil shoulders of the stock in order to
enable the rifle to maintain its accuracy.
5. Air-tested the bore for correct calibration and flaws.
6. Test-fired the rifle in a sitting position at 200 yards.

“For your information, Mast Sergeant Parkinson did the test firing and the target is enclosed. The rifle was not test-fired from a cradle because the gun smiths did not want to scar the stock, however, the test proved conclusively that the rifle is very accurate and as good as any rifle used at the National Matches.”

Even the effort to not mar the stock by firing it from a cradle clearly shows the utmost car taken in creating this gun for Kennedy. Thankfully, the documentation of the rifle’s journey has also been preserved. Accompanying this rifle are a copy of the original DD1348 form noting that it was shipped to Senator Kennedy in October of 1959, the copy of the aforementioned memorandum from COL Lee to Kennedy, the actual 200 yard test target shot by MSG Parkinson, and a copy of the letter of appreciation that Kennedy wrote to MSG Parkinson thanking him for his work and attention to the rifle.

This rifle will be up for auction in September, though it won’t go cheap.

I didn’t need a long-form article to know Darren Wilson was racist. & if you did, that makes me sad. That New Yorker piece was trash.

I read Slate’s analysis of the piece, which broke down all the worst parts of what Wilson said. Wilson is a racist, and he made that very clear with his own quotes.

I’ll read the full New Yorker piece in due time. Tragic thing is Wilson has all the say of what happened that terrible August afternoon, his victim does not for all time.

Reminds me of some history I know…

In 1982, my senior year of high school we had a new family move in. Nicaraguan. I got to know the older son and took an economics class at the University from the father (we spent a lot of time arguing the merits of the “Laffer Curve”. This then young socialist got an A in the course for holding my own.)

The father had been educated in the US. He went back home and went to work for the Samosa government in economics. Eventually he was forced to flee into the hills because he was considered far too radical. His sons joined the Sandinistas and fought to the end. They were lucky and survived unscathed. The first Galil I ever saw was in a photo of my young former Sandinista friend.

His father then went to work for the Sandinista Government and eventually they moved to Florida and then on to Wisconsin because he was too conservative for the new government - though staying would have had far less fatal results than his previous problems…

Politics is always a mess. I’m just glad they all survived all sides of it.

And you can go on down the line with each generation, Gen X is *expected* to be lazy, Millenials are even more dead-beat. That’s a bunch of fuckin’ horse manure.

It’s hard to explain but, yeah, it was a peer pressure kind of thing. If it was on SNL in the first few seasons it was automatically “genius” and if you didn’t think it was funny something was wrong with you.

Mind you that’s only a tiny part of why I found the Punks a whole hell of a lot more interesting than anything else but it really was true for those of us in Jr & Sr High school in the mid to late 70’s.

You know that stupid “That 70’s Show” from a while back? We’ll to quote my guitar hero, “yes, I was there, too. And you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!”

Funny, but how you describe feeling about SNL was how I felt about punk music, especially the Clash. The Clash would always be topping Rolling Stone best-whatever lists, and I had no idea how or why. Still don’t.

There’s always a certain amount of momentum in popular culture, and if you don’t agree with those trends, it can be strangely alienating.

I was around for the whole of Andy Kaufman. I found him deadly dull at best and violence inducing at worst. And don’t get me started on the Mighty Mouse garbage…

Ahem. I never found his gig funny. Shrug. Guess I’m a bad liberal.

I never got the “totally edgy” thing. I prefer a different form of craftsmanship in comedy writing and performance.

And there was a lot of SNL humor that just wasn’t funny unless you were stoned off your nut, which was also expected of that generation.

I like a lot of Steve Martin’s acting, but I found most of his SNL stuff pretty tedious, too. Even King Tut after the first time.

Just a minor aside about the “cuckservative” thing:

It apparently comes from a kind of pornography known as “cuck,” in which a white husband, either in shame or lust, watches his wife be taken by a black man.

This is not entirely accurate, cuckoldry only needs a husband, wife and someone else she is seeing on the side. However, the interracial aspects have become so common in modern use, that the BW interracial element is almost synonymous.

However, the cuckservative crap is implicitly, and explicitly racist as it is being used now.

It is symptomatic of this attention-seeking race to the bottom that the GOP has spun into.

The moderate and somewhat educated elements within the party could not bring themselves to refute or at least distance themselves from people who came up with such utterances for fear of alienating their base.

As a result it became clear that there was no limit to what sort of crass, racist, sexist, simplistic statements people could get away with without being taken to task for it.

Has there been any interpretation that says that the purpose of the second amendment is meant to give people the ability to protect against the government? Because an interpretation like that would open up the ability to own fighter jets, tanks, missiles and nuclear weapons.

Its utter nonsense, as the language of the Constitution makes clear. The Second Amendment clearly states its reason is because a well regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state, and one of Congress’s powers is to call up state militias to suppress rebellion. So the insane notion that the founding fathers included the 2nd Amendment to support rebellion against the very government the Constitution established is the exact opposite of what the Constitution actually says.

Why confine yourself to ground pounding, when you can go get a surplus fighter or bomber from the boneyard. Heck, even the F-117s are retired at this point and you could bring the noise and the funk with that. Forget black helicopters. //

The whole notion that an individual should be imbued with the same weapons as the government is nuts. Even in colonial times, individuals didn’t have cannon, which were the largest and most sophisticated weapons in land combat at the time. The best they could do is obtain rifles that met or exceeded those used in armies of the day.

Today? There’s no way any individual could or should have access to the weapons used in a modern military. Stealth aircraft, tanks, APCs, mobile artillery, MLRS, helicopters, bombers, submarines, aircraft carriers, or even destroyers or cruisers (and let’s not even get started with BBs).

Gotta hand it to Trump about this, though:

After weeks of preparing for a smash-mouth debate with Donald J. Trump, 14 Republican candidates found themselves instead Trump-less but sandwiched into a constricting format on Monday night, delivering strikingly uneven performances just days before the first big test of the presidential primary contest.

Rather than making the other contenders look more presidential, however, the event, at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., seemed to shrink the candidates. Assembled in the front row, the Republicans gawked as each rival took his or her turn on stage, looking at times as if they were being forced to sit through a tedious school assembly.

In Mr. Trump’s absence — he skipped the event, saying it was not worth his time — the candidates filled two hours with credentials and boasts that he could not match. They touted their experience balancing big state budgets (Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Gov. John Kasich of Ohio), their military service (Mr. Graham) and their middle-class roots (Carly Fiorina.)

They have to balance budgets. It’s required under their state constitutions (see Wisconsin and Ohio). They can’t produce a budget that isn’t balanced.

How they balanced it is a different question - and for that, they chose to gut safety net programs, education, etc., to keep the money flowing to pet projects, like keeping billionaires happy (and not moving their sports team from Milwaukee for instance), and yet curiously, WI spent more each year than the rate of inflation during Walker’s term.

Talk to the mayors of many of Ohio’s cities how they feel about Kasich’s balanced budget. He cut state aid to just about everything and all the tax raising fell to the mayors to raise local sales taxes, property taxes and fees for just about everything. People may have thought Kasich was a wiz kid hero budget balance specialists but they still expected all the neat things like good schools, libraries, police departments and the money had to come from somewhere.

If people looked at their bottom lines, nothing changed and in some ways they had less…but they bought the Kasich BS.

Dear Philadelphia,

Thanks,

They’re not going to have any choice. The Secret Service is practically putting Center City under fucking martial law. It’s ridiculous.

I really feel for folks like Fearless Feline Lizard and Steve McGhazi. It will not surprise me to hear of people being arrested half a block from their homes for trying to get to a convenience store.

Best part? The Pope of the Poor is going to create more poor people while he’s here, because the people working minimum wage jobs downtown will literally be unable to get to work to make money.

Oh, and part of the pope’s speech will be about the need for religious liberty. Yeah, ‘cause if there’s one thing that Americans need to be told, it’s to embrace religion.

Sorry, the whole thing just pisses me off to no end. I was only 13 at the time, but I don’t remember Philly losing its shit like this when JP2 came to town in ‘79. And that capped off with a million person mass on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

Ky. sheriff asks drug dealers to turn in rivals

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) —A Kentucky sheriff’s office has posted a flyer on its Facebook page asking drug dealers to turn in their rivals.

Multiple media outlets report the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office posted the flyer Monday afternoon. It features an image of a marijuana leaf and says, “Is your drug dealing competition costing you money? We offer a free service to help you eliminate your drug competition!”

Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton says the post is funny, but the sheriff’s department is not joking around.

At the bottom of the letter, people are asked to fill out information about the drug dealer they are reporting, including the dealer’s name and vehicle.

Melton says he got the idea from the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia.

As of Tuesday morning, the post had 394 online shares.

Bobby Jindal claimed to have shrunk the Louisiana state budget by 26%. True, Louisiana’s 2009 budget came in at 26% less than projected. It’s also true that the projected budget included anticipated federal hurricane recovery aid and stimulus spending. The hurricane season was mild and some stimulus programs ended so Louisiana received far less in federal funds than projected. The missing federal funds amounted to, wait for it, 26% of Louisiana’s projected budget.

And in a relatively poor state, shrinking the government budget shouldn’t be seen as a positive. But, that’s where we are….

Cost shifting isn’t budget cutting. If a governor thinks up ways to deliver the same level of state services that cost less through efficiency or something of the sort, that’s budget cutting. If a governor identifies programs that have outlived their purpose and cuts them, that’s budget cutting. Underfunding schools and state universities, infrastructure, health care, etc., just pushes those costs onto someone else - including future governors. Some problems are better solved by spending some money now so that you don’t have to spend a shit-ton of it later.

Ben Franklin captured these jokers perfectly. “Penny wise and pound foolish.”

It’s all part of institutional racism, and it persists.

And how to solve this one? Yes, the cop, and all cops like him, should be fired. Unless you address the attitude of the chief of police who hired that cop and the attitude of the mayor who appointed the chief then there’s nothing to prevent one bad cop from being replaced by another.

Effectively addressing pervasive institutional racism requires a massive and expensive effort. Though I think that doing so would be one of the best possible uses of federal money, I’m not holding my breath.

So, an arrest has been made in the arson attack in the West Bank that led to the death of a Palestinian toddler.

Israel said Tuesday it was interrogating the suspected head of a Jewish group, in the first arrest of an Israeli following last week’s arson attack in the West Bank that killed a Palestinian toddler and wounded his brother and parents.

According to the Shin Bet security agency, 23-year-old Meir Ettinger was arrested late Monday for “involvement in an extremist Jewish organization.”

The agency would not say if he is also suspected in the July 31 arson attack, but it has accused Ettinger of heading a movement seeking to bring about religious “redemption” through attacks on Palestinian-Christian sites and Palestinian homes.

The Palestinian toddler was burned to death a day after an anti-gay ultra-Orthodox Jewish man stabbed a 16-year-old Jewish girl during a rampage against marchers at Jerusalem’s gay pride parade. The teenage girl later died.

What jumped out at me was this little snippet:

Israeli media have dubbed Ettinger the Shin Bet’s “No. 1” most wanted attacker. He has been arrested several times before and banned from the West Bank. Ettinger is the grandson of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, an ultra-nationalist whose work has influenced anti-Palestinian, Jewish militant groups and whose party was banned from Israel’s parliament for its racist views in 1988. Kahane was killed by an Arab gunman in 1990.

Planned Parenthood execs suspect arson after suspicious fire at site of new facility in New Orleans

It’s only a matter of time before another right-wing terrorist acts out over the fake Planned Parenthood outrage. And as usual, no one will be held accountable except the victim(s).

And the morons who are now pointing to those free clinics are ignoring that the clinics largely exist because of the ACA that they declared “socialism” and have demanded be totally repealed for years now.

re: #237 Higgs Boson’s Mate

And how to solve this one? Yes, the cop, and all cops like him, should be fired. Unless you address the attitude of the chief of police who hired that cop and the attitude of the mayor who appointed the chief then there’s nothing to prevent one bad cop from being replaced by another.

Effectively addressing pervasive institutional racism requires a massive and expensive effort. Though I think that doing so would be one of the best possible uses of federal money, I’m not holding my breath.

re: #229 lawhawk

[Embedded content]

This is abhorrent stuff, and yet the cop and all those involved got to keep their jobs. This is the kind of thing that should result in departments being shut down for violating civil rights and other violations. But they aren’t.

It’s all part of institutional racism, and it persists.

re: #248 sagehen

It wouldn’t be that expensive; all it takes is for people to want to.

This is really going to sound weird, but that’s probably not the bad cop in town. Ya’ gotta be here.

And in many places where there are free clinics, those are Planned Parenthood clinics.

265
Targetpractice  Aug 4, 2015 • 9:05:10am

It’s like I noted yesterday, the “alternatives” that the wingnuts are now saying exist so that defunding Planned Parenthood won’t matter are either A) dependent on qualifying for Medicaid, B) exist because of the ACA that wingnuts want gone, or C) are Christian brainwashing centers that provide no services beyond guilt-tripping girls into carrying to term.

Ideally, it would be done by the voters of the cities and counties. That hasn’t happened to anywhere near the extent that it should. One of my town’s former chiefs told me that communities usually get pretty much the kind of policing that they want.

I’m gobsmacked right now. I just ran out to get lunch for me and the wife and had 1010WINS news on the radio.

They reported a shooting last night in Brooklyn, where a 19 year old woman was shot and lost - quoting here - ‘her 4 month old unborn baby.’

WTF? That’s how insidious letting the pro-force crowd frame the terms is. A freakin’ fetus is now suddenly four months old.

I hate the goddamned ‘liberal media.’

A false saving, all because you don’t understand the concept of externalities.

This is not some profound misunderstanding. The decisionmakers are content to let the impact of their savings fall on the broad powerless mass of ‘others’.

re: #204 Dark_Falcon

That won’t matter when the Secret Service is involved. They may arrest anyone they see with a few miles of the pope who looks like a “militia type”. So don’t wear camo of any kind, for example.

The Secret Service is not like most law enforcement, and being white does not cut much ice with them. Remember that they also protect a black man whom nutcase white people want to kill.

LOL, I think the SS’s plan on protecting the Obamas has been called “Operation Hope Nothing Happens.” Between people firing shots into the White House’s private quarters; letting a knife-weilding maniac run around the WH’s ground floor; and letting an armed man on an elevator with Obama; they’ve gotten lucky.

I’m still partially convinced there’s some inside Tea Party/Freeper-type conservatives on the Secret Service who’ve been trying to purposely get him killed.

As for the Secret Service harassing civilians during the Popenedo? They may not do it, but the Philly PD will be more than happy to step into that role. Particularly if the person is black.
