Elizabeth Warren absolutely tears apart the Republican attempt to destroy women’s reproductive rights in this barn-burner of a speech at yesterday’s Senate hearing. Worthy of a standing ovation.

Good to see that Dems are not caving on Planned Parenthood the way they caved on ACORN.

I’m really glad Democrats are fighting back. No reason to cave, plus if they did—just a little PP would lose funding.

The fact that these assholes are treating shutdown threats as simple common political maneuvering, and enough in the media and across social media are swallowing the idea up is just…christ, I don’t have enough hair to tear out to underscore how baffling and infuriating it is.

Perry County deputies told the news station that they are searching for two people accused of firing the shots at about noon Tuesday. They were driving a two-door red Ford Ranger with “broken arrow” written across the top, WDAM-TV said.

“They interviewed an ancient, an old Mayan woman who said she had a dream and she said, ‘I see the future and in the future we will be missing our white brothers,’” Savage said. “That was chilling, that was a shocking, chilling statement. Heh, reminds me of this:

2012 isn’t the end of the world, Mayans insist

MEXICO CITY - Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly “running out” on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it’s not the end of the world.

Or is it?

Definitely not, the Mayan Indian elder insists. “I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff.”

It can only get worse for him. Next month Hollywood’s “2012” opens in cinemas, featuring earthquakes, meteor showers and a tsunami dumping an aircraft carrier on the White House.

At Cornell University, Ann Martin, who runs the “Curious? Ask an Astronomer” Web site, says people are scared.

“It’s too bad that we’re getting e-mails from fourth-graders who are saying that they’re too young to die,” Martin said. “We had a mother of two young children who was afraid she wouldn’t live to see them grow up.”

Chile Pixtun, a Guatemalan, says the doomsday theories spring from Western, not Mayan ideas. […]

“Look, if any job is going to take up someone’s life, it deserves a living wage. If a job exists and you have to hire someone to do it, they deserve a living wage. End of story. There’s a lot of talk going around my workplace along the lines of, “These guys with no education and no skills think they deserve as much as us? Fuck those guys.” And elsewhere on FB: ‘I’m a licensed electrician, I make $13/hr, fuck these burger flippers.’”

He continued, “And that’s exactly what the bosses want! They want us fighting over who has the bigger pile of crumbs so we don’t realize they made off with almost the whole damn cake. Why are you angry about fast food workers making two bucks more an hour when your CEO makes four hundred TIMES what you do? re: #76 allegro

I did not know that.

Oops…“Broken Bow”, not “Broken Arrow” (although both towns are in OK):

“Broken Bow” is the pilot episode of the science fiction television series Enterprise (later renamed Star Trek: Enterprise). It originally aired as a double-length episode, but has been split into two segments for syndication. A novelization of the episode, written by Diane Carey, was published in 2001. The episode won the 2002 Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series, and was also nominated for sound editing and make-up.

It is nine decades since Zephram Cochrane produced Human’s first warp flight (as seen in the movie Star Trek: First Contact), and Earth finally launches its first starship of exploration, Enterprise NX-01. Commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer, and against the objections of the Vulcans, it departs on an urgent mission to return an injured Klingon [played by Tiny Lister, BTW - ed.] to Qo’noS, the Klingon homeworld.

I’ve been following the Rocky Fire in CA as it is threatening one of my favorite places (Wilbur Hot Springs) and stumbled on this news article. I thought several Lizards might get a kick out of it.

When a mountain biker riding through the foothills of Boise, Idaho had to use the bathroom, there wasn’t one nearby. So his solution was to go down to a ravine and take care of business there.

The consequences ended up being pretty dramatic.

The Idaho Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Carrie Bilbao told CBS News the cyclist was responsible for the fire that burned 73 acres of brush and grass in the foothills when he set his toilet paper on fire to try and dispose of it. When a spark got away, he tried to thump it out, but it was too late.

Well—30, 32, 34, 36 and 38 are even numbers; and if you take the digits in 31, 33, 35, 37 and 39, they each add up to an even number, so voila! No bad. (not sure what to say about your vowel values.)

Attorneys say toxicology report proves security guard was high when he shot Monroe Bird III

kjrh.com

The family of Monroe Bird III, who was shot by an apartment security guard earlier this year, said at a news conference Tuesday the guard’s toxicology report show’s he was high on marijuana on the night of the shooting.

And the police statement on the toxicology report:

I can point out based upon reports provided to my office from the Tulsa Police Department, not one person who interacted with Mr. Stone indicated in any report that Mr. Stone appeared to be impaired by alcohol or any drug.

So, if a victim is on drugs….”See? This is why they are dead.” A cop/security guard is on drugs….”meh. He didn’t look high.”

We get that around here.

The base values still apply. Ordering is I > A > E > O > U.

Digits (and it’s only digits, the full number judgment is based on the digits that make it up) go 2 > 4 > 0 > 8 > 6 > 1 > 3 > 9 > 5 > 7. Preference to numbers where the digits are in increasing order.

Maybe because those speeds are easier for me to translate into my “native” miles per hour…

The way to defeat Trump is to play on his defeats and to rail the rest of his supporters to show that he won’t give a flying fuck for them. A three-timed bankrupt loser that even his father couldn’t save his ass the first go-round. He needs to be proved he’s been a serial liar, and that his first-class facade is nothing more than first-class shit.

At this point, I think it’s a safe bet that Jeb! is the GOP nominee. Which will lead to the same shit as the last two elections: Weeks of screeching and teeth gnashing from wingnuts, as well as threats that they’ll stay home rather than voting for a “RINO,” before they come around and decide that they’d rather a “RINO” than a Democrat be president.

jeb has been chosen, but if trump does well in the primaries but the party elders refuse to allow him to be nominated, there might be major trouble

and perhaps even the long anticipated fatal split in the gop. if the cosmic dog is favoring us, there might even be a dramatic walk-out of the convention when jeb is crowned

Here’s how I hope the first debate goes.

Kasich - I want him to be damn near invisible, and have almost nothing to contribute that is memorable.
Carson - A couple of good quotes - memorable zingers at Rubio or Paul
Rubio - At least one long cotton-mouthed answer that includes visible white spittle building on his lower lip.
Jeb! - He fumbled a memorized anecdote about a tshirt for sale on his page (I looked - it doesn’t exist. Fucker lied…about a t-shirt.) I hope he does the same trying to return fire on another candidate on stage if he feels slighted.
Paul - I just want him to be short and ignored. The first part he’s got down. Lindsey Graham’s not on stage so there’s nobody there to make him look like he’s similar to them.
Cruz - Loads of Jesus talk, some conspiracies about Iran and Obama, and a demonstration that he’s not as intelligent as anyone thinks he is.
Christie - May he be blessed with a combination of uncontrollable flatulence and a leaky bowel, and may his neighbors wrinkle their noses at the odor.
Huckabee - Oh, fuck that asshole and his pedophile friends.
Walker - Stage fright. And pick a fight with Jeb!
Trump - Sharp, concise responses to what he’d do. Bombastic rebuttals to Jeb! Ted, etc. that make for repeat plays on all the networks. I want him in the thirties by next week.

Idaho’s ban on undercover animal abuse videos struck down by federal judge

A federal judge struck down Idaho’s ban on undercover videos at factory farms Monday, saying state legislators wrongly criminalized free speech to protect powerful agricultural groups.

Animal rights advocates called the ruling the first such defeat for a so-called ag-gag law in the U.S. The laws have gained popularity in some states as activists continue to publish undercover videos showing animal abuse at facilities around the country.
The remedy for misleading speech, or speech we do not like, is more speech, not enforced silence. - U.S. Chief Judge B. Lynn Winmill of the District of Idaho

U.S. Chief Judge B. Lynn Winmill of the District of Idaho swept away the state’s ban on the grounds that the law violated the 1st Amendment and selectively targeted activists or journalists who might be critical of factory farm practices.

“The effect of the statute will be to suppress speech by undercover investigators and whistleblowers concerning topics of great public importance: the safety of the public food supply, the safety of agricultural workers, the treatment and health of farm animals, and the impact of business activities on the environment,” Winmill wrote in a summary judgment.

The judge said that “the facts show the state’s purpose in enacting the statute was to protect industrial animal agriculture by silencing its critics.”

Seeing Mike Wiener’s post on the Mayan prophecy up above got me thinking:

Of course the Mayan calendar didn’t “run out” in 2012—the Baktun number just changed from 12 to 13. It’s scandalous, but even scholars commonly refer to this as the “13th Baktun”. Of course, unlike the Western calendar, there was a 0th Baktun, so this is really the 14th. So the 13th Baktun ran from (I get) September 27, 1617 to December 21, 2012. Maybe 13 is an unlucky number—a lot of nasty shit happened during the (real) 13th Baktun. Does that mean things will start getting better?

Hey, if you can (mis)use the Mayan calendar to forecast doom, I can use it to forecast improvement.

If I had to guess, I’d say the idea came from a couple folks at a Whole Foods betting on how gullible their clientele might be.

This why back in the days of the Soviet Union, at the Olympics or anyplace where Soviet athletes would mix with outsiders, and people would give them chewing gum, it would be confiscated with a serious tongue-lashing. The Soviets pictured a shadowy group of capitalists sitting in a smoke-filled room and saying: “Hey, I bet we could get people to chew rubber if we market it right!”

Can’t say as I disagree with them….

The biggest check to support Perry was written by Dallas billionaire Kelcy Warren, chief executive of an energy pipeline, who gave $6 million to one of three pro-Perry super PACs, as CNN first reported. Warren also happens to be the finance chairman of Perry’s campaign, and in February the former governor landed a spot on the board of Warren’s company, Energy Transfer Partners, the Texas Tribune reported.

I figure the other 9 guys have to either out-crazy Trump, or get him to go just that one step too far - although given how far he’s already gone, what would that even be? Tossing an actual N-bomb?

That is what it would probably take. He could call Mexicans “wetbacks”, and the controversy would just drive his poll numbers higher.

As long as we’re posting pet comments, I’m going to repost a dead-thread comment I made last night:

I stopped at a Dairy Queen for dinner tonight and sat at their outdoor patio. A couple groups with dogs in tow also showed up. The first group bought an ice cream cone for their dog, and the other dog watched enviously. Then the second group came out with their treats and they didn’t buy any treats for their dog. He was obviously ‘WTF’ while watching his humans slurp down their chocolate Blizzards and he wound up barking at the other group because he wanted a treat so bad and the owner and her kids were completely oblivious. The dog wound up spending 5 minutes trying to lick the remains of some old ice cream from the concrete patio.
I almost when in an bought a cone for the dog, but I figured there was too much of a possibility that they wouldn’t give it to him. Honestly, if you’re going to take your dog to the Dairy Queen, he gets a treat.

“With regards to women’s health funding broadly, I misspoke, as there are countless community health centers, rural clinics, and other women’s health organizations that need to be fully funded. They provide critical services to all, but particularly low-income women who don’t have the access they need.

“I was referring to the hard-to-fathom $500 million in federal funding that goes to Planned Parenthood - an organization that was callously participating in the unthinkable practice of selling fetal organs. Democrats and Republicans agree we absolutely must defund them and redirect those funds to other women’s health organizations.”

To messers. Nehemiah Dodge, Ephraim Robbins, & Stephen S. Nelson, a committee of the Danbury Baptist association in the state of Connecticut.

Gentlemen

The affectionate sentiments of esteem and approbation which you are so good as to express towards me, on behalf of the Danbury Baptist association, give me the highest satisfaction. my duties dictate a faithful and zealous pursuit of the interests of my constituents, & in proportion as they are persuaded of my fidelity to those duties, the discharge of them becomes more and more pleasing.

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

I reciprocate your kind prayers for the protection & blessing of the common father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves & your religious association, assurances of my high respect & esteem.

Most local residents support the change.

Well, you know that the Constitution only supports the religious freedom of Christians. Not all those other religions worshiping their false gods and idols. I know it’s true, because Scott Lively said so….

“Well, I don’t actually believe in ‘religious freedom,’ the way that the term is used,” Lively explained. “I know that when you use it and when most people use it, you’re talking about Christianity. We’re not talking about freedom for Islam and freedom for Buddhism and Hinduism as if they’re equal with God.

“The number-one Commandment is ‘You shall have no other gods before me.’ And when we forget that and we start accepting this concept of religious pluralism and we say that Jesus Christ is really no higher an authority in America than Buddha or Mohammed or even Satan, that’s when we have really dropped the ball and we have brought disfavor from God on us.”

In May, a marijuana dispensary in Santa Ana, California called Sky High Holistic was raided by the police, who claimed it did not have a valid permit.

It started off like a standard raid—the police banged on the door, ordered customers onto the floor, and proceeded to sniff around.

Then police started to dismantle the security cameras—which was caught on tape by one of the cameras they missed. The footage goes on to show the officers chumming around, playing darts, and snacking on edibles, before making some unsavory remarks about the dispensary manager, Marla James, who is an amputee. In one exchange, an officer asks, “Did you punch that one-legged guerita?” and another replies, “I was about to kick her in her fucking nub.”

Well, you know that the Constitution only supports the religious freedom of Christians. Not all those other religions worshiping their false gods and idols. I know it’s true, because Scott Lively said so….

That’s not the way it works…. that’s not the way any of this works.

RBS

And 19,378 crazed people in Massachusetts voted for Lively for Governor. (yeah, a small number in the big picture, but still—jeez.)

Ask them what they intend to submit to back their proposal, and them start the clock for a review.

re: #466 Eric The Fruit Bat

No time for that—they wanted to delay it until after the elections, but we pushed for the vote now, as we have pretty good support. Most of the other coastal cities here have come out strongly against seismic testing/offshore drilling. We want to get our council on record.

The opposition has been touting this totally bogus poll (commissioned, of course by API) that says 71% of South Carolinians favor offshore drilling. It is a ridiculous push poll with absurd demographics (and no info about where the people live.) I shot it down (by proxy—I’m not on facebook) on the pro member’s facebook page, but he’s still ranting away.

My comments on his facebook and in an email to him and the rest of the council members:

the poll that gave them their 71% figure (COMMISSIONED by the American Petroleum Institute—SURPRISE.) The wording of the questions and the cross tabs on the responses were hilarious. And the idiot touting the 71% had never seen the actual poll.

EDITED TO REMOVE THE 8,000 OR SO PAGES OF THE POLL RESULTS. Don’t know why it did that—if you want to see the poll, google “71% of south carolina support offshore drilling—the first result will take you to the API page with the link to the poll)

44% rural, but the biggest income group over $100,000
59% Conservative, but only 32% Republican-WHAT????
62% over 50—9% under 34 (cause why would you want to know what the people who are going to have to live with the results have to say?)

Notice—the first four questions ask about “energy” but ONLY mention oil and gas.

Then, Questions 6-10 are not really questions, but statements presented to be agreed or disagreed with. They are posed as factual, but with no particular basis for that assumption.

Example: Question 8. Producing more domestic oil and natural gas could help lower energy costs for consumers.

From most research I have seen, that is not true—first, it does not differentiate between oil and gas production and refining, and, in most cases, domestically produced oil does not necessarily supply domestic markets.

Facts are either correct or incorrect, and not subject to whether people agree or disagree.

After presenting 5 statements supportive of oil and gas production in the U.S., then comes the money shot:

Question 11: Do you support or oppose offshore drilling for domestic oil and natural gas resources?

TALK ABOUT A PUSH POLL!!

Anything you can find, I would greatly appreciate it.

Maybe I am just not following this correctly but I understood this to be a debate about allegedly selling fetal tissue /body parts, not whether there should be abortions at all. The fact that women can abort a baby is just that, a fact, and it isn’t debatable, so when watching her speech I don’t really follow. What I understood the vote in congress was about, was de-funding that specific organization for allegedly selling the tissue. I believe some states have started investigations into their local branches. If indeed they are illegally selling the tissue, which as of right now there is no evidence of, then they should be de-funded and brought up on charges. If they are not then I am sure we will see civil suits and they will end up getting a large chunk of change for their trouble.

They way her speech played out it really appeared as if she was the one playing the political game. Just IMO.

re: #476 Thrazidun

You aren’t understanding it correctly, so I’ll run the issues for you:

1) Planned Parenthood isn’t selling fetal tissue. In fact, it is illegal to do so under federal law.

2) Planned Parenthood facilitates the donation of fetal tissue. In fact, it is legal to donate fetal tissue, and for PP to facilitate the donation and get reimbursed for the costs of sending the donated tissues to the researcher/medical team. The reimbursements do not cover the whole cost.

3) Abortion is legal.

4) Anti-choice extremists put together this wholly dishonest smear campaign to lure people into thinking that PP is doing something wrong. PP isn’t. PP is adhering to the law, and providing health care services, including abortions, and facilitating the donation of fetal tissue from said abortions in accordance with all applicable laws.

5) There’s nothing in the videos show by these anti-choice extremists that even remotely shows any illegality on the part of PP. None. Sorry, but there’s nothing there. Edited? Unedited? It doesn’t matter. There’s no illegality in what PP is doing in those videos.

6) Squeamishness about an invasive medical procedure is not a justification to stop it. All invasive medical procedures can and do get bloody, involve all manner of blood, tissue, bone, and even fecal matter and/or urine depending on the procedure. There are entire medical specialities would make the stomach churn for the uninitiated. Again, not an excuse and doesn’t diminish fact that abortions are legal.

7) Abortions are still safer for women than plastic surgery centers, yet GOPers are intent on using TRAP laws to shut down abortion clinics, even though women are far more likely to have complications including death while in plastic surgery centers than abortion clinics.

8) Anti-choice extremists are not about pro life but pro birth, since they don’t care one iota about what happens outside the womb - to a child or anyone else for that matter. The proof is in the pudding with all the crossover between the anti choice extremists and the right wing GOP that intends to shut down the safety net, limit access to health care for all, restrict and diminish the importance of women’s health care, and generally look to repeal the ACA, which expands access to health insurance for millions and improves the financial viability of hospitals because they no longer have as great a concern about indigent care and unpaid bills that go unreimbursed.

So, in sum, Warren isn’t politicizing anything here. She’s responding to the right wing extremists who have continued to make abortion a hot button issue with the intent of shutting down PP for no reason other than that they refuse to accept the very notion that abortion is legal and/or family planning is antithetical to their worldview.
