Rick Santorum Whines About Not Making It Into the Prime-Time GOP Debate

Somebody call the whaaambulance
Politics • Views: 57,191

Rick Santorum is one of the many Republicans in this campaign’s Crazy Clown Car who didn’t make it into the “prime-time” debate tonight on Fox News, and boy is he ever whining about it.

“They probably need to apologize to the American public more than the candidates; they’re the ones not getting the opportunity to get a chance see all the folks who could win this race and who could actually be the best candidate for president,” Santorum, who didn’t make the cut, told NBC News.

The other Rick, former Gov. Rick Perry, as befits his new bespectacled smart, serious guy image, is taking the high road.

I’m sick of the “back on track” crap. If a liberal said this they would cry that we didn’t love America. It has almost no meaning. Tell us what you cant to do or attempt to do and how you would do it and let us decide.

I hope America never gets “back on track” to what it was during the last GOP administration, I was unemployed for 6 out of 8 years of Bush’s gig.

I’d blame the RNC for that, more than a media outlet.

As much as I dislike Santorum and all he stands for, he is right. A “news” organization shouldn’t decide who the candidates are…the people should. Sorry if your party is nuts and you have everyone but the dog catcher running. If they signed the papers to run, and have any kind of campaign system in place (meaning that Joe The Dog Catcher who has no campaign staff, no funds, etc., is not a serious candidate and having them participate is a waste of time), they should be made available to the public.

I agree that it will be unwieldy. Then there should be more debates.

Santorum won several of the primaries or caucauses, or whatever the state-by-state systems are, last election cycle. Just because thinking people think he’s insane, he *is* the base of the GOP.

That’s always been the case as some candidates have been excluded by the debates for similar reasons - insufficient support.

With the current crop of 17 major candidates, support is so thin that it’s particularly glaring that you’ve got former/current governors who can be excluded but political neophytes with no experience at any political position are in.

One possible solution is for all the candidates to answer a basic questionnaire - and if their answers match all the others, the one with the lower poll rating is knocked out.

This way you get the most diverse background and limit the numbers for polling.

So if say Christie and Jindal are unique compared to the others but each have the same answers on the questionnaire and Christie’s higher polling, then Jindal’s out.

There’s no perfect answer, but the size of this particular crowd is directly related to just how weak each of the other candidates views the rest of the field that they all think they’ve got a chance - even someone like George Pataki who’s been out of politics long enough for the WTC to have been mostly rebuilt.

Oh man, I agree 100% on the entertainment value. My concern is that this is supposed to be a democracy where we vote for our leaders. Yes, every single one is 100% batshit insane (or have batshit insane ideas). But this *is* the GOP. This is how their voters think. Yet a new organization - a for profit - news organization…a for ratings, which bring profit - news organization (and I use “news” very, uhm, liberally) is deciding how they are going to get their ratings.

It’s wrong for a real democracy.

The purpose of this debate is so that the GOP can start thinning the herd now, months before the first primaries. Right now there are 17 interchangeable Republicans and Trump running. If this debate narrows it down to 7 or 8 interchangeable Republicans and Trump, that would be a good start.

The only point I would make is that while Fox organized it, the RNC could either sanction it or refuse to sanction it. While Reince whines and mopes, he went along for the ride.

(Not that I’m a fan of the way DWS runs the DNC, but they have said that The committee will implement a so-called exclusivity agreement, it said, whereby “any candidate or debate sponsor wishing to participate in DNC debates, must agree to participate exclusively in the DNC-sanctioned process. )

It’s about how much they charge their cable and satellite providers.
If they streamed the event those providers would lose viewership and their few carrier ad-slots wouldn’t have as much value
If you log on through a provider, they can add you to their ratings numbers

If these GOP clowns get full power at the Federal level, it won’t just be embarrassing. It will be a disaster.

For starters, each and every GOP candidate seems certain, if elected, to be a worse president than the disastrous GW Bush. The party as a whole is also markedly worse than it was from 2000-2008.

Since it has now reached the obvious level of just entertainment, I suggest the following additions to the debate events:
*Debate judges holding up score cards like Dancing With the Stars to see who gets to move on the the next debate.
*Use a gong like in the Gong Show.
*Sandman from the Apollo Theatre to clean up the stage after the buzzer/gong.
*Russell Crowe strides out at the end screaming “Are you NOT entertained????”

HA! In 1980 George H. Bush (the smart one) ripped Ronald Reagan a new one. Remember voodoo economics? It didn’t work out well for ol’ George in the short run, but he promptly sold his soul, became VP and took his turn at the Presidency 8 years too late.
In all seriousness the Republican Party was once the party of pragmatism. In the 70s Richard Nixon opened us up to China and even signed legislation for the EPA.

Well. Fuck. That’s depressing. I hate giving that prick one penny.

Showcasing these dimwits is a patriotic service. He just doesn’t know it, or doesn’t care.

I disagree. I think the GOP is simply the political wing of Fox.

Their military wing was just captured in Mississippi and Florida.

So in other words Fox is censoring the Debate from most of America.

Yep. Want to keep it contained to the wingnut bubbleverse so the more sane parts of America can’t watch the massive explosion of derp, misogyny and racism that’s contained in the clown car.

Oh dear lawd. I’m about to start suffering through six hours of Fox News with the sound on. They just turned the teevee on for the kid’s table debate.

Good music and funny memes and anything to distract me from all the suck will be welcomed.

Put that whale video I posted on a loop and think of it out there in the depths of the pacific?

214
BeachDem  Aug 6, 2015 • 2:14:54pm

From Wonkette’s live blog:

This GOP pathetic, mortifying, humiliating, second-tier losers debate is basically the Breakfast Club: there’s a brain (Rick Perry, OBVIOUSLY), an athlete (Bobby Jindal), a basket case (Rick Santorum), a princess (Lindsey Graham), and a criminal (Carly Fiorina). Plus Jim Gilmore and George Pataki, who are both the principal from Ferris Bueller who went to prison for child porn.

215
Lidane  Aug 6, 2015 • 2:15:22pm

I put my earbuds in but I’m pretty sure they’re asking the kid’s table candidates about Trump right now because I just heard Rick Perry bleating about HOW CAN YOU RUN AS A REPUBLICAN AND BE FOR SINGLE PAYER?.

ROFL. This has to be a kick in the ass. These people got pushed out of the main debate because of Trump sucking all the oxygen out of the room and they have to answer questions about him too.

Your Q&A is not following well. In fast-moving threads it’s usually necessary to start by hitting the ‘reply’ or ‘quote’ button.

Heh. I had to look up what channel FOX News is in my area. I never watched them on the new channel lineup.

What a joke. This is just bad acting rather than politics. Apparently no one wanted to see it live.

But it is fun seeing some of the guys like Perry and Jindal be bad asses. Talk tough boys! You too Carly with your Trump/Clinton dig. No more invites and Xmas cards for you.

Yuck.

Watch Republicans espouse complete Darwinian economic ideology. Now watch as they whine and complain about not being able to hack it in their chosen field of competition. Watch them fail to succeed against the competition of others who share identical social and economic theories. Watch them realize their rigid ideology fails to account for real life.

Watch them completely abandon their stated abstract ideology when faced with career failures, and instead call for real life socialism.
