The first casualty of war is Truth.
The first casualty of a GOP debate is Fact.

Ever since HW Bush’s observations about ‘voodoo economics’ were memory-holed by the GOP, it has been an entirely fact-free operation.

Unfortunately the MSM seems to have a vested interest in pretending that the GOP is still interested in reality-based decision making. It isn’t. GOP campaigning is essentially primate dominance battle cries shoehorned into the form of public policy debate.

For crying out loud. An Eliza-bot could be programmed to give stock conservative answers to all political questions and ‘sound more intelligent’ than any of the asshats running for the GOP nomination.

Not coincidentally, said Eliza-bot would also sound more intelligent that just about all conservative pundits, including Wallace and Will.

Seriously, I think they get points for just being able to put a couple of sentences together. Content?…pfffft.

Some 1 % of the US population watches Fox News at it’s most watched hours.

I’d like to think that means only 1% of the population actually buys what Fox sells, though sadly I realize more than that do.

The real analysts, who aren’t on TV trying to push a candidate for which they’ve been paid to look good, know that all those religious-right old men in the GOP central-nexxus will not get very many female-under-40 votes. The gray-haired vote - yes, but the younger vote definitely not.

So this “debate” is for the Fox audience, for their customers.

Any GOP candidate needs the Fox customers, but to be US President said candidate will need lots of other people too. That’s what Jeb! meant which Jindal played against.

Jindal is running an ego-stroking exercise which he has lied to himself to claim it’s a religious mission. Thus he’s never going to be President and can simply run for the glory of it.

The billionaire backers, though, need a President in their pocket. That’s why Jeb! and Walker are the two most likely to win. At this early day in the campaign I’m expecting the GOP ticket to be either Walker/Rubio or Walker/Bush.

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) seemed to forget during Thursday’s second-tier GOP debate for the presidential nomination that he served 15 years as governor.

“It just needs a corporate executive type at the top that’s done it before. And I will suggest to you nobody’s done it like Rick Perry has done it over the last eight years,” Perry said.

re: #313 blueraven

I hope America is smart enough to not want to go back to all this chest thumping foreign policy rhetoric and anti science BS the GOP is pushing.

Well, I think there is something deeper going on.

Fox sells emotion. Anger and hate are easier to generate than others. All one has to do is convince someone they’ve been wronged, and shazaam, there’s your anger.

That is what this “take our country back” - revanchism - is all about. It’s trying to convince someone that something dear was stolen from them.

I still maintain that the underly angst is due to worldview-collapse. The older crowd, holders onto magickal themes of old, are feeling threatened by a younger crowd which doesn’t go along with either the old-time religion, or even old time polity.

The forged-grievances of the hate-right against Obama and “libruls” get the energy for the angst from this rejection of the older worldview.

Take for example Islam. While Jindal in particular but others too keep trying to make Islam a military threat to the US, it isn’t. It is a threat to fundamentalist Christianity though, as any Muslim who is a practicing Muslim is essentially saying that those fundamentalist Christians are wrong. The threat of a Mosque isn’t so much as a source of terror - though that is what is sold on the cover - but rather the deeper challenge that Islam has for Christianity.

And the same goes for other theistic religions. Which is why you always hear the term “Judeo-Christian” by the right wing fundamentalists - they have to equate their beliefs to that of Jews otherwise there is a clear ideological competition between Judaism and Christianity, and the wingnuts mostly don’t want to go there (but a few of the hard-line Presbyterian crowd will.)

The Government Is Watching #BlackLivesMatter, And It’s Not Okay

By Nusrat Choudhury, Staff Attorney, ACLU Racial Justice Program
AUGUST 4, 2015 | 10:30 AM

WEB15-SiteImages-RacialJustice.jpg
Racial Justice protest
According to documents recently obtained by The Intercept in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, the government is surveilling the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Records from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Operations Coordination show that since August 2014, DHS officials have been trolling public social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, and Vine, to map and collect information on #BlackLivesMatter protests -and supposedly related events. Targeted activities include silent vigils held across the country following the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, an anti-police brutality protest in Philadelphia, and an April 2015 #BlackLivesMatter protest in Washington D.C. The documents even show a plan to gather information on a funk music parade in a historically Black neighborhood in the nation’s capital.

Perhaps most troubling are the Google maps and live updates tracking, minute-by-minute, the movements of participants in an April 2015 #BlackLivesMatter protest in Washington, D.C. A DHS email released to the Intercept confirms that on the day before the event, several DHS officials were aware of a Federal Bureau of Investigation joint intelligence bulletin characterizing the protest as a “First Amendment-protected event,” and noting that there was “no information suggesting that violent behavior is planned for Washington, DC.”

Rove is on Greta’s show babbling about Fiorina and about how now maybe people will be sending her money. And Greta was asking where the Republican “girl power” was and why aren’t they rallying around Carly.

Fox is definitely trying to get her into the next debate.

The Twitterverse has declared Carly “pretty in pink plastic” Fiorina the winner for the first round - bless her heart?

First prize: a date with Rick Perry.
Second prize: two dates.

I was in the car listening to the first debate. Fiorina was pretty articulate. If anyone on that stage can rip Jeb!, Cruz, Rubio, Kasich etc a new asshole in future debates, it’s her. Perry sounded angry and resented being in the first debate. Santorum’s butt-plug was too tight. Like Perry, he’s pissed off, but sounded plaintive in his responses…I’m conservative! Really I am! Lindsey Graham sounded (remember, I couldn’t see their faces) like he was auditioning for a Fox News correspondent role - zingers at Bill Clinton that he’d already been called on for being predictable, and a genuine desire to see Muslims bleed in the streets. Pataki and that other fucker from Virginia sounded like they should have run in the 2004 primary.

The municipal court judge, city manager and police chief resigned, and Ferguson and the Justice Department commenced discussions about reforming the police and court.

Toughies. If reforming the Ferguson PD will bankrupt the city, so be it. It’s not as if tiny little jurisdictions each levying onerous fees on their residents is something that needs to be continued.

407
Targetpractice  Aug 6, 2015 • 4:44:23pm

This is what happens when you break up a major city into little fiefdoms, they each have to duplicate the functions of a larger government, and that duplication leads to costs that they can’t shoulder without either getting financial assistance from a higher sources or levying various fines and taxes on those least able to pay them. If Ferguson will collapse financially without the ability to keep using its poorest residents as a perpetual piggy bank, then perhaps the question is “Why does Ferguson exist in the first place?”
