What is sad is the celebration of the behavior you are mocking.

We joke, and the RWNJs cheer.

It is right out of a novel about a nightmare dystopian future.

Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living. It would do me good to go back to the dear old home again, and see Miss Mary and Miss Martha and Allen, Esther, Green, and Lee. Give my love to them all, and tell them I hope we will meet in the better world, if not in this. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance.

Go read the whole thing. It’s not too long.

Quite frankly, with media stocks taking it in the shorts lately, I’m not surprised The Donald hasn’t engineered taking over some media company with a solid cable presence and creating “The Trump Network”.

At least we know this much-since his one media darling, Caribou Barbie herself, wound down her own “Sarah Palin Channel” maybe he’ll think twice as to who he’ll hook up.

Shit, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him talk about buying out Al-Jazeera America in one form or another.

It’s funny how the GOP base confuses Obama’s presidential behavior for arrogance, and Trump’s arrogance for presidential behavior.

Perhaps more than anything else, the GOP has developed a true mastery of painting themselves into corners. Anyone who wins the GOP primary is going to be unpalatable in a general election, and anyone who could win the general election is unpalatable to the GOP base (and won’t win the primary). It’s a catch-22, and is only made possible by building the foundation of their entire political party upon deceit and misdirection. This is a confluence of all their chickens coming home to roost.

I’m loving every minute of it, albeit it is sad moment for our country.

Actually, we need to find out what ‘defines’ the GOP, and from there, work on its business structure/holdings, and then start to attack them from as many points possible-both private and public.

Remember, RICO applies to any entities-it makes no difference to political alliances. They are using RICO to go after marijuana growers in Colorado by disrupting the business supply chain; there should be no reason why this could not be turned against the GOP, cries of ‘Criminialization of Politics’ notwithstanding.

Bruce Bartlett posits that the GOP needs Trump to win to cleanse the party of this divisive hateful madness.

politico.com

“Republican leaders couldn’t stop the far right from briefly taking control of the 1964 convention and nominating Goldwater. But it ultimately proved beneficial to the party. The extremists had their chance and lost in one of the great blowouts in history.”

“A historic thrashing of the know-nothings would verify that compromise and reform are essential to recapture the White House and attract new voters, such as Latinos, who are now alienated from the Republican Party.”

I hope he is right. My mental health can’t take much more of this! :)

I am so sick of listening to people tell me that Marco Rubio represents the future because he talked about Amazon, while insisting that there should be no abortion exception for rape or incest. That is just insanely extreme.

It may not matter if he’s the nominee. In the end it may come down to the unelected delegates deciding things, and if that happens Trump (and possibly Cruz) may form a third party ticket, officially breaking the GOP apart.

I had the privilege of driving on I-95 behind a guy in a pickup truck (of course) flying an American flag, confederate flag, a gadsden flag and a POW flag. He had one of those Aryan cross decals on his back window and a variety of stickers. One of which stated that he doesn’t believe the liberal media. He was a local to, sporting a PA license plate. If this had been a regular street I would have waited for a red light and rescued the American flag from that mess. Unfortunately, he stayed on the expressway.

I’m not sure the rift would last beyond a single election. It’s not like the revolt of the Dixiecrats. Trump doesn’t represent any policy position or ideology that any other GOP candidate rejects. In fact it’s hard to say what his actual positions are, apart from the know-noting position on immigration and the kneejerk ‘spend more on defense!’ position they all have.

I also think Bartlett’s kidding himself about reasonable Republicans reclaiming the GOP.

the rift has been evident for years - this is obvious if you read what the freepers have been telling each other

their heroes are palin, cruz, and now trump - they despise just about everybody else in the gop. they are the wingnuts who the wall st republicans who own the party have been attempting to exploit. but the wall st republicans have been unsuccessful at masking their contempt and unwillingness to implement the “small government” and anti-minority polices that the teabaggers demand

the wingnuts have finally stood up, and woe betide those who toy with a rabid dog

A certain amount of caution is in order. If Trump were to become the GOP nominee, his chance of winning in the general election would not be the zero % it ought to be.

Millions of drooling morons in the US will vote (R) in the general election no matter what kind of idiot, oaf, bigot and/or clown ends up as the GOP nominee.

Furthermore, the Red states are a fortress. It is impossible for today’s GOP to lose as badly as Goldwater did in 1964.

I wouldn’t doubt his ability to raise cash, as his supporters are idiots. His real weakness is that he has no political organizing experience, and I don’t think his business experience will translate well towards creating a strong GOTV ground game.

Again though, it may not matter if there’s a large enough gulf between how he’s polling during the primaries and how many delegates he gets. If Trump and his supporters think the GOP Party heads screwed him out of the nomination through backroom deals they may well revolt. If he can get another national Tea Party figure like Cruz to join his ticket the Republicans will be in real trouble. Not the least of which because the only thing that will reunify the Party after a loss in 2016 is if the nominee is a fire and brimstone tea party conservative, and Ted Cruz is the only one who meets all the requisite religious, foreign policy, economic and social policy tests without being a gigantic gut-pile like Huckabee or a disgusting Froth Golem like Santorum.

Ted Cruz however, is almost certainly not going to be the nominee, and whoever the nominee is will either go for Fiorina as VP in a misguided attempt to stem losses with women, or choose Rubio if he isn’t the nominee himself, to attempt the same cynical strategy via the latino vote.

Banning Trump would fit right in with the mistrust, suspicion and the sense of being oppressed that the GOP has been nurturing in its base for decades. Trump’s martyrdom would be declared within minutes. Striking at Trump’s candidacy without killing it could leave the GOP spectators at their own primaries.

Why is it that when people talk about how cheap things like gas used to be, they always imagine themselves still having their current income?

My wingnut cousin posted a picture on FB of gas prices under a dollar, with ‘Share if you’d like to see prices this low again!’. So I said, ‘Sure! Mind you, you’ll also have to take an 80% cut in salary.’

I had a discussion with an otherwise rational, fairly liberal friend, who was saying maybe deflation wouldn’t be such a bad thing. I pointed out that his mortgage would become more onerous, especially since in real deflation, his salary would drop. Turned out he had been assuming THAT would stay the same.

As long as I’m dumping on cops, how about this from my part of the world?

4 police officers could be charged in alleged abuse of teens at boot camp

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is recommending local charges against four Los Angeles-area police officers suspected of abusing 15 teens at a youth boot camp that rented facilities at Camp San Luis Obispo in May.

The charges — ranging from misdemeanor battery to felony criminal conspiracy — will be forwarded to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Detective Marissa Elizabeth Larios, 36, and Officer Patrick Marvin Nijland, 47, of the Huntington Park Police Department and officers Carlos Manuel Gomez-Marquez, 31, and Edgar Yovany Gomez, 35, of the South Gate Police Department were served arrest warrants by San Luis Obispo deputies, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Cipolla said Wednesday.

The GOP might be wise to simply use Trump’s refusal to pledge not to run against the nominee to ban him from the rest of the debate schedule. That’s probably what I would do, just kick his ass out now and accept the backlash.

With his ego that would all but guarantee a 3rd party run.

WaPo asks what I suppose it thinks is a profound question:

Why Liberty University is requiring its students to attend a Bernie Sanders speech

[…]

It’s obvious why Sanders would want to speak at Liberty: He’s running for president. Speaking to large and sometimes skeptical audiences is what presidential candidates do. And Sanders, who’ll be speaking from the most left-leaning end of the political spectrum, probably has more trouble reaching audiences like Liberty’s than almost anyone else.

What an ignorant claim, in my opinion.

Sanders would be seen as just another middle-of-the-road European politician, but here somehow he’s the “most left-leaning” on the “political spectrum”??

Die-hard Socialists I’m sure will find many things wrong about Sanders.

The author then goes on a long description of Liberty’s past and tries to come up with the answer to the question in the title, but she takes too many words to state the obvious, which is this:

Liberty University is founded on an authoritarian religion. You can be authoritarian if you let your followers make all their own decisions, so the school makes it students do lots of things. Forcing them to attend a big gathering every two weeks is what the authoritarians like, because it reinforces their superiority over their underlings.

Thank you so much for seeing this & sharing with us.

Extraordinary.

I’m in Portland for my friend’s wedding. We are staying at the McMenamins Kennedy school. Seriously, it’s a school built in 1916. They converted it to a hotel/meeting place/wedding venue & movie theater.

It is a freaking school. Long halls. Our rooms are former classrooms divided. Beautiful huge windows covering all the wall. There are public bathrooms in each hall. Re-modeled, but damn if it’s not just like elementary school. Cool/weird.

Each room is named for someone who used to either attend or teach. I’m in the Lois Morton room. Named for one of the first African American’s attending this school in the 1930’s.

They even have a class photo in the room & you can definitely see Lois.

What a wonderful gift I received, on this weekend especially.

mcmenamins.com

Otherwise, I walked & walked & walked & shopped, ate & got my hair cut in the Pearl District of Portland today. It is so nice here. Everyone is so friendly & cool.

So many events though, since I got up at 330 this morning for my 600 flight, I might have to call it. My other friends arrive at 9 & have some dinner planned back downtown…..we will see if I make it.

This is standard Liberty University policy. They always require students to attend these political events. This is one of the ways they surreptitiously mix religion with politics.

Liberty University is ground zero for the religious right’s war on the First Amendment’s establishment clause.

Die-hard Socialists I’m sure will find many things wrong about Sanders.

it goes back to the multiple definitions of socialism that allow right wingers to accuse democrats of things they dont believe in

“die-hard socialists” you are probably talking about people who believe in ‘the state’ owning and operating all major industries and the suppression of private enterprise

“middle-of-the-road european politician” you are probably talking about bernie’s definition of socialism which would describe any government with an old age pension and health insurance plan & etc, under which definition all modern governments are to a greater or lesser degree ‘socialist’

of course pretending that people who want to guarantee health insurance for all are therefore supporters of stalin, castro, and one party states is the bread and butter of republican politics these days

The money shot:

But if Trump’s favorability numbers fall, even if he maintains part of his base, the other candidates will have freer rein to criticize him or simply ignore his voters, knowing that they represent only a minority of the Republican electorate. That would be welcome news to a party that desperately wants to defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016. Otherwise, Republicans may continue to just jab at Trump, making it more likely that general election voters will tie Trump and his comments on Mexican immigrants and women to the Republican Party at large.

Damn, I hope so.
