The Stunning Hypocrisy of Erick Erickson

Or how everyone seems to ignore the rampant racism, xenophobia, and misogyny of Erick Erickson & his site
Culture • Views: 93,429

In the aftermath of yesterday’s comments by Donald Trump about Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly, RedState’s own Erick Erickson decided to disinvite Trump from his extremist right wing confab. Apparently, Trump’s comments were a bridge too far.

Has no one, especially other journalists and pundits, bothered to consider that Erickson is not one to talk about tone or content of speech, when Erickson’s own statements are a hate-filled orgy of misogyny, racism, and xenophobia?

(HT to Dr_Matt for graphic)

That’s just a small sample of the comments by Erickson himself. Yet he continues to act like the tone police in public comments:

Then there’s the fever swamps that are the commenters on RedState itself. In fact, Trump’s comments are indistinguishable from the commenters there.

In other words, it seems that Erickson’s reason to disinvite has more to do with the target of Trump’s statement than the content of Trump’s statement. Moreover, Erickson was silent about Trump calling women bimbos, let alone calling Mexicans rapists. His misogyny and xenophobia has been on display from the moment Trump got into the race, but Erickson didn’t disinvite him over those statements. For if Trump had directed his statement at someone, say a Democrat, Erickson would applaud.

After all, Erickson applauded Trump’s statements attacking Rosie O’Donnell just the other day.

This is the GOP and its core constituency. This is Erick Erickson and RedState.

Really one of more remarkable presidential campaign statements ever

…Seriously? Donald Dump’s vocabulary is so severely limited (primarily to repeating “clown” and “loser”) that I picture a stagehand—an undocumented Mexican worker, no doubt—just erasing one name from Dump’s cue card and writing in another. And Memoli fellates him as if he just gave the Gettysburg Address.

They all deserve each other. The hubris is in thinking that any of these people should have anything close to a serious voice in the politics of our country is disheartening but that is the reality of today’s America. Scary how much money really can change everything.

We see this every year with CPAC and now RedState confabs. Racists and extremists are regularly invited and are in the decision making loop over who gets to be leading the conservative movement and leading the GOP charge.

At every turn the extremists are running the show over at the GOP, and the kerfuffle over Trump’s statements are merely the symptom of the bigger problem. There is deep seated misogyny, racism, and fear-mongering among the right wing.

They see minorities getting rights that they take for granted as something to be avoided.

They see women demanding equal pay as taking away from someone else.

They see low wage-earners demanding better pay as taking away something from the billionaires.

And they think nothing of depriving women control over their own bodies by demanding invasive and costly medical procedures that have no medical benefit. They impose TRAP laws to deprive women access to abortion. They seek to outlaw abortion and/or curtail it to such an extent that they put women’s lives at risk (because a significant number think abortion should be outlawed in all instances, and not allowed for rape/incest/medical necessity).

This is the extremist and reactionary GOP base. Trump’s just the symptom.

I never cease to be amazed at the “natural” things that have to be legislated for. If it were so natural, you wouldn’t have to have laws to keep women, people of color and the like in “their place.” We don’t have a lot of laws preventing men from becoming pregnant, or cows from growing wings and flying for obvious reasons. They can’t do it.

In every case what they are really unhappy about is losing their power. White, Christian males exclusively called the shots in America for centuries. For many of them they were rewarded simply for showing up.

Now all kinds of people have rights and privileges and these losers can no longer do much about that. It’s no wonder they’re so angry. Nobody likes their power being taken away from them.

And that is how Johnny boy has been successful as a politician. He never looks bad. People seem to buy into his tender moments like he is that way all the time, when behind the door to his office he is really doing what your chart shows. And worse.

He can be exposed as a hot-head SSDD Republican. But if they don’t he will look good to the GOP base and establishment as the others eat each other up fighting with Trump.

And the problem will still be, he is a good politician and he will somehow end up not looking bad when compared to the others. I don’t get it, but if you know his history, it works for him. He’s made a nice career by not looking bad. He’s hoping that works for him again.

I honestly never thought it was possible for me to feel sorry for Donald Trump, but the right-wing machine has decided to go after the guy with reckless abandon.

And while he deserves everything he gets, the hypocrisy from the right wing media is impossible to overstate.

Absolutely fair for Kelly to ask Trump about his sexist remarks — but why not ask Christie about all the times he’s called voters idiots and worse?

Absolutely fair for Kelly to ask Trump when he became a Republican — but why not ask Rubio about immigration reform?

I believe it was Charles who pointed out that Trump is what happens when you appeal to the nether regions of your base….so why are they surprised?

Yowza, still trying to figure this one out:

1) Mother Jody Herring shoots and kills a Vermont Department for Children and Families social worker. The catalyst is believed to be that the social worker removed Jody Herring’s 9 YO daughter from her custody on July 10.

burlingtonfreepress.com

Then, it gets WEIRD, because Jody Herring is in custody, right?

2) Cousins and aunt of the woman shooter are found murdered in cold blood in their home on Saturday morning.

burlingtonfreepress.com

Per a relative:

Tiffany Herring told the Burlington Free Press that it appeared Folzorano was shot in bed, while Rhonda Herring showed signs of a struggle.

Jody Herring had called Rhonda Herring on Friday morning, Tiffany Herring said.

“My mother got a call in the morning, maybe 7:30 or 8 o’clock, saying it was Jody Herring, saying ‘You guys need to stop calling DCF unless you guys are going to have it coming to you,’” Tiffany Herring said.

Tiffany Herring said she discovered her sisters and mother’s bodies at 8 am this morning.

The question I have is whether Jody Herring killed these women first and then went over and killed the social worker or if there’s someone else on the loose?

Sounds like maybe it was the cousins who called in complaints about her to DCF (the comment about what JH had said to one of the murdered cousins, “‘You guys need to stop calling DCF unless you guys are going to have it coming to you,’

Just a thought that Jody Herring set out to get everyone who “done her wrong.” And that maybe she killed the family members, then went after the social worker.

Alberta’s Energy Regulator (AER) says it is looking into what killed the birds at Syncrude’s Mildred Lake facility, about 40 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alta.

AER says it regularly inspects wildlife deterrent programs at oilsands sites in response to previous bird deaths.

In November, 122 birds were killed after landing in three tailings ponds in the area, including one at Mildred Lake.

A dumb meme that deserves an overly literal and dismissive answer. It also greatly overstates the support for abortion restrictions within the Republican Party. My own feeling is that most Republicans would rather have access to firearms as opposed to passing restrictions on abortion. And liberalizations of gun laws do pass state legislatures more often than do laws restricting abortions.

Bernie Sanders seems to have kicked a hornet’s nest back at Netroots:

Protesters interrupt Bernie Sanders rally

Protesters who claimed affiliation with the BlackLivesMatter movement stormed the stage during a rally for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in Seattle on Saturday, taking over the microphone.

Moments after Sanders took the stage at Westlake Park, two women and one man climbed the stage and confronted Sanders, demanding a chance to speak.

After several moments of confusion and confrontation, an event organizer took the microphone and said the protesters would be allowed to speak before Sanders.

One protester, who identified herself as Marissa Johnson, began by saying, “I was going to tell Bernie how racist this city is — with all of its progressives — but you’ve already done that for me. Thank you.”

re: #225 Dark_Falcon

And liberalizations of gun laws do pass state legislatures more often than do laws restricting abortions.

Personal observation.

Between 2011 and 2013, states enacted more anti-abortion laws than during the entire previous decade, particularly limiting abortion access for the estimated 9 million women of reproductive age who live in the South. The middle ground on the issue has continued to shrink, and the Guttmacher Institute now rates most states in the country as “hostile” to reproductive rights.

Ninety two abortion restrictions were passed in 2011, the year that still tops the chart. That number dipped to 42 provisions in 2012, which was the second-highest number of new restrictions at the time. 2013 continued the trend that kicked off in 2011, climbing back up to 70 anti-choice provisions.
As Guttmacher researchers point out, the dramatic increase between 2012 and 2013 was mainly driven by just a handful of states that had a particular focus on restricting access to abortion this past year: North Dakota, Texas, Arkansas, and North Carolina. None of those states enacted any abortion restrictions in 2012 (the first two didn’t have a legislative session, and the last two had more moderate lawmakers back then). But in 2013, they were collectively responsible for 26 of the new anti-abortion provisions — including some of the harshest laws the country has seen since Roe v. Wade — despite massive public outcry against them.

Thanks. My folks did most of it while I was at work last weekend, but I filled in the rest after they left. This afternoon was the finishing pass, which was a pretty good effort to get everything wedged in place, but it’s set nicely now.

So crazy just now.
I reminded MrBWS that if there ever comes a weekend where there is nothing worth watching on the TV, I have every single episode of WKRP in Cincinnati on DVD.

Then I thumped my chest and said “it’s our HERITAGE!!!11!!!”
We laughed!

I’ve been meaning to get all of the seasons of WKRP for a long while, even with the lame music track substitutions they had to do because of all of the rights issues.

As long as they still have the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing ‘You’re Having My Baby’ in episode one. One of the best WKRP scenes, as Johnny rips the needle all the way across the disk…

In the future, don’t bother giving me that chance when I say something like that. My own observations are just educated guesses (sometimes semi-educated). Feel free to treat them as if I’d pulled them out of my ass unless shown otherwise.

History shows that you do “just pull them out of your ass” and then run away when called upon them. But don’t you have a dinner to go to?

I’m torn, because I love the show, but the music was such a big part of it. I hear they even changed Jennifer’s doorbell song.

I waited 25 years for “China Beach” to come out on DVD, because they were relentless about getting all the releases for the music—and it was worth the wait. I’m sad that WKRP gave up the ghost.

Its now largely non-existent, both because I don’t feel competent to judge what is reasonable or not in such matters and because I could not square the standard pro-restrictions position with other things I believe about the use of force.

I wasn’t asking, and your response is vague enough to preclude discussion, but I don’t think it is possible to hold a non-existent belief (either that or it’s so metaphysical it’s too far beyond me.)

Trump’s massive popularity in GOP primary polling is entirely due to Republicans being at their core a bunch of racist, sexist, revenge oriented bullies. They not only enjoy the very things that intelligent, well adjusted, introspective people are absolutely disgusted by, the entire point is to generate that feeling of absolute revulsion in others. The modern GOP is, at its base, a party of abusive trolls who define themselves according to an ever worsening set of social behavior norms.

Nixon is well to the left of the modern Republican party. He couldn’t get elected dog catcher in 2015. Taking the US off the gold standard. Normalizing relations with China. OSHA. The EPA. The Clean Air and Clean Water acts. Title IX.

Even the fact that he was a terrible human being and a raging anti-Semite couldn’t save him in today’s GOP. The bills he signed would have him tarred and feathered and called a RINO.

My standard version is:
