Yay, general purpose thread! Here’s my photo of a stained glass window at Wakefield Cathedral in Yorkshire. There’s something anatomically wrong happening (and it’s safe for the kids to find).
A family actually paid for this in memory of their father…they should have had a proofreader…

By the way - you may notice there’s no longer a search field at the top right underneath the login panel. That’s because it’s now part of the navigation bar; clicking “Search” pops up a dialog with the search field in it.

You can also type Alt-F (for “Find”) to pop up the search dialog wherever you are on the page. (Control-Alt-F on a Mac.)

In today’s really bad idea category: Black Lives Matter Protesters Shut Down Bernie Sanders Speech

A Seattle speech by Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was preempted in a chaotic confrontation Saturday afternoon with Black Lives Matter protesters, who took the stage and refused to let him speak.

After speeches by Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant and state Sen. Pramila Jayapal at the Westlake Park rally for Social Security, a handful of protesters walked onto the stage and grabbed the microphone.

“If you do not listen to us, your event will be shut down,” one of the protesters told organizers, who relented and said they could speak before Sanders.

IIRC, Occupy did the same thing. They took a public that was largely in agreement with their complaints and their goals, and turned themselves into a joke by refusing to organize and refusing to narrow their message.

In this case, the BLM leaders who keep disrupting Bernie Sanders are going to take Sanders loyalists, who are their natural allies, and turn them into enemies. That’s just dumb.

I just posted this in a comment thread at Balloon Juice and I’ll post it here too:

Why doesn’t Bernie just take the time to schedule a ‘race’ speech and try to get this stuff behind him? Obama had to do it when the Wright stuff was getting out of hand. Bernie just doesn’t appear to be thoughtful about this. If he needs help writing the speech, he should get help, but he should really take the time to do it if he’s serious - maybe even take some questions. He needs to have a reaction to these protests.

I thought they said he was “robbing” the place. This looks like someone who got drunk or stoned and made a nuisance of himself. Does this shed any light on why police had to shoot him even though he was unarmed? And isn’t that the salient question?

29
goddamnedfrank  Aug 8, 2015 • 5:59:56pm

I need a warning popup when there’s a new thread, that says “Hey idiot, are you sure you don’t want to post this awesome comment in the spanky fresh new thread instead of this old dead moldering thread?”

Anway…

Bernie Sanders isn’t the problem. The problem is that his supporters are basically cognitively biased to the point of abject delusion.

Sanders might be able to win a general election, but there’s absolutely nothing in the polling data at this point to suggest he’d be a stronger candidate than Hillary. A person would have to completely turn off all objective analysis of the American electorate and substitute their own druthers to arrive at this conclusion right now.

Which isn’t to say that the landscape can’t change between now and when people start casting their primary votes, just that this is a patently ridiculously assertion to make at this point.

That shit goes back at least to the ’60s. Asked why they were disrupting a Democratic function (perhaps the convention) an interest group leader replied “You protest your friends, you negotiate with your enemies”. Interestingly, I don’t remember who it was.

Practical tip #2: if you’re in Lisbon, there is a bar in Bairro Alto, at the southern end of Rua da Rosa, with cheap-ass beer (1€/0.5l) and cocktails (4€/0.5l). In comparison with neighboring bars it’s a steal.

News reports say he drove a SUV through the dealerships window, as he doesn’t appear to be carrying one in as he enters the lot, he used one of theirs.
The police responded to a “burglary” call from the dealerships security company.

No, I’m not saying he should have been shot. But, he certainly wasn’t just minding his own business

Yes, good point. He’s missing a real opportunity not just to get this issue behind him, but to show that he’s going to be there for African Americans.

But the BLM folks are also badly miscalculating the effect of these kinds of emotional demonstrations. The whole thing is a first class fustercluck.

I’m not even much of a fan of Bernie Sanders at this point, but he’s not handling this well at all.

It’s mildly irritating that Sanders will get a more civil reception at Liberty University than at the Westlake Park rally for Social Security. If he ever gives The Speech, I hope it’s 5 minutes on coalition building and a suggestion they grow the fuck up.

Sadly, I’m pretty sure that Red State et al. are loving this, much as they loved the slow, rolling implosion of the OWS movement. BLM needs leadership, because leaderless movements just don’t work.

To the people of Seattle and ‪#𠃫ernieSanders‬ I am so sorry for what happened today in Seattle. I am a volunteer who just runs this page and I am only just starting to get into the movement. I was unaware of what happened and now that I’ve seen the video I would like to say again that I am sorry. That is not what Black Lives Matter stands for and that is not what we’re about. Do not let your faith in the movement be shaken by voices of two people. Please do not question our legitimacy as a movement. Most of the BLM ‘leaders’ are in their 20’s so I’ll cut them a little slack. Bernie is much older and hopefully can lead on this.

The reality is BLM isn’t something that’s a pet issue with black folk: people are dying under the weight of a biased justice system and it has reached a crisis level.. or, social media and technology has made us all aware that this crisis, known for a long time in the black community, is really happening and it’s now being documented.

Is this something for BLM to bring up as an issue to them, or should we acknowledge this is an issue affecting all of us? That’s the issue black folk have with white liberals. Bernie fans don’t seem to be getting it and this is the chasm.

Bernie can close that chasm.

This is an echo of the old “dual loyalty” charge that has been lodged against American Jews since the day the State of Israel was established.

The president is not ignorant (the accusation he lays against his opponents) and must know he is here feeding a deep line of anti-Semitism that accuses of American Jews of getting America into wars.

That’s Elliott fucking Abrams accusing Obama of antisemitism.

I’m not even a fan of Hillary, but there’s a reason that she has been focusing on race in her major policy speeches.

Back then, as she wrestled uncomfortably in competing against the man who would become the first black president, Mrs. Clinton appeared reluctant to make race a central issue. And her husband, former President Bill Clinton, angered many African-American leaders with off-the-cuff comments that seemed to diminish Mr. Obama’s stature, including calling his antiwar position “the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen.”

Now, Mrs. Clinton is offering sweeping and passionate speeches on race, which was one of the subjects that first drove her interest in politics in the 1960s and ’70s.

On Tuesday, she will hold a community meeting at a black church in Florissant, Mo., near Ferguson, where clashes between black protesters and police officers erupted last summer after an unarmed African-American teenager was killed by a white police officer. At the meeting, she plans to discuss the massacre of nine people last week at a black church in Charleston, S.C., and “broader issues around strengthening communities,” her campaign said.

The protest is getting uglier as a direct result of Bernie’s economic monomania. His campaign has been very slow to come off of the one size fits all idea that fixing the economy will fix the racial issues America faces. It won’t, and most people understand that intuitively. Sanders watched from backstage as BLM disrupted O’Malley’s presentation at NN, then Bernie went on stage and didn’t even try to adapt. He’s still not adapting, at least not fast enough. So as ugly and arguably counter productive as the Seattle protest today was, those are its roots.

If Sanders wants to broaden his appeal and show he can be competitive in a general election he needs to prove that he’s capable of reading the landscape and pivoting, he needs to show people that he can think on his feet. Because right now he’s floundering badly, and his supporters are responding with little more than open hostility and condescension. If he wants the vote of people who care about the BLM movement he’s going to have to earn it.

Blind Frog Belly White  Aug 8, 2015 • 7:06:07pm

re: #58 JadeHelmCurious

I’d say that it’s less a crisis level matter than it is a moment of opportunity. Let’s be honest - unarmed black people have been gunned down by police for decades. This is not new. Black people have known this was going on all along, but to be honest, even we liberal whites have mostly never quite grasped the depth of the problem. NOW, with the omnipresence of videorecording, we are finally learning that.

This is a moment of opportunity. People who had no idea this was going on are shocked, appalled. They want to do something about it. The rise of ‘Black Lives Matter’ as a statement shows that. Black Lives Matter the movement has a window, and it needs to be used wisely.

Disrupting NN? That made perfect sense. It was saying, “We are being killed out here, and now you see it as we see it. You cannot take us for granted. You need to do something, not just the same old business-as-usual. Now what are we going to do about it?” It’s fair to present this as a demand. They are part of our coalition and have earned it.

But what to do next?

Movements that are effective need to be able to articulate goals that are specific and reachable. “End White Supremacy” is a great overarching goal, but it’s too big as a demand, without achievable concrete steps on the way. Sure, we need to make a radical change in society, but it will only happen in stages. So BLM needs to articulate those stages.

What I fear is that BLM goes the way of OWS. OWS also began at a moment of opportunity, when Wall Street had nearly driven us off a cliff. But their insistence on being leaderless, and having no articulatable goals led to them becoming a joke. Today’s little fiasco, where BLM disrupted Sanders’ event, demanded to be heard, and then blew the opportunity by not having a plan to use the time to their advantage? That is EXACTLY the kind of thing that will marginalize BLM and turn it into a bad joke.

They seem to need leadership, and fast, and it has to come from within the black community. Bernie can lead to some extent, he can’t lead BLM.

What really concerns me about Sanders’ inability to respond proactively so far is that the ability to react constructively events as they unfold, and to speak extemporaneously is something that, thanks to Obama, I’ve come to expect from the President of the United States.

We’re at the point in the 2016 election where people should be building alliances. It’s disturbing to see groups who should be natural allies attacking each other for purely emotional reasons. It’s like a mirror image of what’s going on in the GOP with Donald Trump.

Politics is hard. It means putting aside emotion sometimes, in order to gain the leverage you need to get into a position where you can actually bring about change.

You protest the people most likely to agree with your message, if you think they’re ignoring you. Protesting those who are least likely to agree is pointless. The thing is, you can’t just protest. You need to be able to say something cogent, if your demand to be heard is granted.

Some folks just want to be noticed, and for them the disruption of the event is the point. Sometimes this is because the people in question just don’t want to do the hard work of putting together reform proposals, other times the they don’t put forward proposals because they want someone else to make the first substantive mood.

Still other times, the protestors have a hard time engaging the lawmaking process out of distrust for said process. And then there are thos who don’t make substantive moves because to do so would cause divisions within their own ranks and they fear that too much.

I give up.

I have this recipe for braised boneless beef shortribs. They’re braised in red wine, tomatoes, a little ‘Better Than Boullion’, with onions, garlic, and carrots. They reach the perfect consistency (the one you always imagine in the perfect pot roast) after three or so hours of simmering. Then I strain out the solids, reduce the liquid, add just a bit of cornstarch to tighten it. Serve with polenta, or mashed tatoes.

It’s fucking great. Best slow cooked beef dish I’ve ever had. The wife and kids fucking love it! A bit of work, especially at the end, but well worth the trouble.

Then, while the Older Boy and I were visiting the Older Boy’s Girlfriend at her job at Williams Sonoma, I spied some Braising Sauces, put out by Anchor Brewery. I buy them. I used one to make shortribs, just browning the meat, tossing it in the pot with the braising sauce, and cook for 3 hours. Easy-Peasy.

The wife and kids declare it better than mine. MUCH better than mine.

Ungrateful bastards.

The original reason I was going to post was to observe that radio station websites used to have a “listen live” link. Now when I click it I have to login with my Facebook ID or Google ID or some such. I don’t do it because I am distrustful, even though my facebook page is empty. What benefit is it to the stations to require our id’s to listen to them online. We don’t need them to listen over the air? I have asked, and the people who answer say that it is intended to enhance the listener’s experience (IOW, Beat it kid).

re: #168 Blind Frog Belly White

This is a powerful lesson. Don’t try to compete with *anything* associated with the Anchor Brewing Company. Everything, EVERYTHING they touch is as golden as a new bright shiny double eagle.

Even if the guy isn’t a theocrat, he’ll have to make a deal with them if he wants power. He certainly isn’t going to tell any theocrats to take a hike.

I’ve made similar comparisons in the past. George H Bush in 1988 was a shadow of the man he was in 1980. John McCain, same 2008 vs 2000. George W Bush was never really his own man and just sold right out at the beginning.

I was gonna do that with some Bon Appetit magazines, for years. Finally last year I accepted the fact that not only was I never going to do that, but also that I was never likely to open them again.

This seemed a reasonable conclusion, since they dated to 1981 and I hadn’t looked at them since 1990.

I know the feeling. Most many of these I will actually use. However, I can’t let the recipe collection grow too much bigger than it currently is, or the recipes will become as lost in the binders as they were in the magazines. I’m not even a fan of Hillary, but there’s a reason that she has been focusing on race in her major policy speeches.

Hillary’s first event back in May, before her first speech, in South Carolina was a roundtable with minority small business owners.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) At the forefront of her campaign is Hillary Clinton’s push for Equal Pay and helping women succeed. She continued that path on Wednesday by meeting with six female minority business owners.

Okay, so this happened:

I was sitting here reading the erudite postings of fellow Lizards when suddenly there came a loud “Squeee!!” from the kitchen. I thought that it might be a rat grabbed by an owl, but then I thought, “I have neither owls nor rats in the kitchen.” Next thought:

I just lost a water pipe!

Oh, shit. I run into the kitchen and fluids are indeed spraying into the underside of one cabinet.

She Who Must Be Obeyed makes homemade ginger beer in the summer. It is slightly alcoholic and tremendously refreshing in the Texas heat, over ice. We got some quart bottles that look like big Grolsch bottles (lever mechanisms, ceramic caps and rubber grommet seals), and the internal pressure of the fermenting beer had pushed a seal out of its seat. SWMBO is in Houston this weekend doing rehearsals for an upcoming gig, BTW.

Squeee!!!

So I grab the bottle, and put it in the sink and put may hand over it until it settles down. Then I decide (forgetting the first rule of pressure vessels, that just because the pressure relief valve has closed, that there is no more pressure in the vessel) that I need to reseat the seal. So I unlock the mechanism to do so.

And had a pint of mostly fermented ginger beer erupt into may face. Haha! The joke (and the beer) was on me! By the way, raw ginger shot up your nose at a significant velocity makes you snort and perform a St. Vitus Dance around the kitchen.

I don’t agree. Opposition to abortion is not in and of itself a “theocratic” position. Theocracy requires far more than that, or else you’d have to call nations like Poland theocrasies.

Obviously, there are Christian extremists in America who believe, like the Islamic State extremists, that it is the government’s duty to force religious instruction on public schools, and this week, Ohio Governor John Kasich made that “religious extremist duty” mandatory in Ohio. Kasich issued a statement through a spokesman informing Ohio schools that if they fail to align with Christian organizations, they will lose funding…

A new mentoring program funded with taxpayer dollars requires ALL Ohio school districts to become partners with a faith-based organization (church) and a corporation in order to have access to the public school money. The initiative is the brain-child of religious Republican Governor John Kasich and provides funding to mentor at-risk students, but only if the schools allow a church and corporation to control the program. According to the initiative, “failure to incorporate a faith-based non-profit (Christian church) will eliminate a school district’s eligibility for the taxpayer funding.”

It does not have to be only about open violence. It’s also about abusive behavior. In this case aggression. Seeing how they physically forced themselves on the stage and again physically prevented others from speaking by taking away the mic, it’s certainly not peaceful.

PS: and yes, I read your page, which I found misguided; the govt has a reason to monitor any movements like this regardless of the message, because even if they attract 99% of good folk, it takes only 1% to wreck havoc. And such movements do tend to attract various weird characters on the edges - radicals, revolutionaries etc., see OWS. The assumption that if a movement is based on noble principles then it should be by default exempt from any such treatment seems naive to me.
