Sunday Jam: Terence Blanchard’s Tribute to Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Et Al

Speaking out through music

YouTube

When he started to make the music that appears on his new album, trumpeter Terence Blanchard wasn’t thinking of Eric Garner, Michael Brown or any of the other recent high-profile police killings of African-Americans. He was thinking of desired collaborators: Donald Ramsey, a bassist and high-school classmate; Oscar Seaton, a drummer with whom he’d worked on film projects; Fabian Almazan, the pianist of his other band; and Charles Altura, a guitarist he’d encountered online. And he was thinking about a sound different from the left-center jazz quintet he leads: something overtly funky, with electric bass and guitar and processing and human voices and dance grooves.

As the E-Collective came together — both as a band and in terms of its repertoire — it took on another guiding light. Blanchard, no stranger to political statements, saw the music as an opportunity to speak out on current events he was unable to ignore, especially as a black man. The eventual recording came to be a commentary on the treatment of minorities by American law enforcement, in the vein of the #blacklivesmatter movement. The album’s title references Eric Garner’s last words, “I can’t breathe”; it’s called Breathless.

The heavy and the party recently came together for a week-long run at a jazz club in D.C., though the mood was much more on the party side when the E-Collective stopped at NPR headquarters. The mood was relaxed and jovial from the time the group stepped into the lobby, with Englishman Chris Bailey supplying plenty of backbeats on our house drum set — though there was a moment toward the end of the set when Blanchard casually explained the project, setting up a lyrical, almost elegiac solo. This music was a modern update on jazz fusion, sure, but also one where we dance to ward off despair.

Set List
“Soldiers”
“Confident Selflessness”
“Breathless”

I was listening to a discussion of the Nigerian email scam. Even though it looks so silly it’s quite sophisticated. It can’t be too clever that only smart people bite, only to back out later when they realize wassup. It can’t be too stupid that only people with little money give it a go. It has to walk a fine line to get people gullible enough to nibble, yet still have enough money worth stealing.

British chatterata Polly Toynbee blamed George W. Bush and “Texas oil industry values” when she lost money in a Nigerian scam a few years ago.

The image of capitalism now being spread about the world is cowboy stuff: little gleaned from America extols the virtue of regulation, restraint and control. We reap from the third world what we sow: if some Nigerians learned lessons in capitalism from global oil companies that helped corrupt and despoil that land, it is hardly surpising they absorbed some of the Texan oil values that now rule the White House.

British capitalists pillaged ruled Nigeria for a hundred years and created its legal and educational systems, but I guess their gentlemanly form of capitalism just didn’t take with the locals.

It goes without saying that many RWNJs believe Obama is the instigator; indeed, the likely kingpin; of the current crop of Nigerian scammers.

But today, as I was cleaning the car I saw a receipt where he had made a small cash donation to Planned Parenthood. I asked him about it and he laughed and said, yeah but I gave your email address, so you will get all the emails asking for more money.

My internet got flaky two threads back, so I went for a ride. Is SteveMcGaziBolaGate still wrong?
///////////////////////////Just funnin’ ya!

Nice ride, but windy as all-get-out over at Canada Rd (for you Peninsulans). Places where I can often hit 28 mph, I struggled to reach 22 mph. OTOH, I hit 44.1 mph at one point, according to my cyclocomputer. The combination of good wheels, a tailwind, and being ‘gravity enhanced’, not to mention hitting all the lights just right. Strava thinks I only managed 43.4, but it averages over longer intervals, so I’m going with 44.1.

Now I need a shower, a snack, and a nap.

Your misleading Drudge tweet of the day:

Link is to a National Review story that includes Carly Fiorina’s claim that she has “seen an uptick in financial support”. This could, of course, mean the difference between $10 and $100. An NBC survey is also cited that seems to show her and Cruz gained the most support for their debate performances, although both are way WAY behind Trump.

That is not any definition of “surge” I have ever heard.

I found this on the last thread (not asked by a Lizard, obviously):

Stay on point, the only question was, why did man evolve to speak & walk & drive & chimps didn’t?

Why do Creationists always act as though all of Evolution is aimed at recreating humanity? We already HAVE humans. We don’t need another species to fill that niche. Indeed, we had to kill off the last one to claim the spot ourselves.

re: #68 Belafon

It’s that time-tested tactic of making up laws for your own convenience.

MSU Constitutional scholar Michael Lawrence, J.D., came down to the protest and spoke with police officers about the question of whether or not the protestors could hand out their leaflets. (Lawrence is a board member of ELi.) Lawrence informed the police that the law is unequivocal on the right.

Lawrence later noted that another leafletter at the Festival, whom I subsequently identified as Yvonne LeFave, was handing out papers advertising the Old Town General Store without harassment from the police. I spoke with LeFave and she confirmed this, and said that when she had checked with festival organizers, she was told there was no permit required and individuals were free to hand out flyers. Lawrence told me that this showed the protesters enjoyed the same rights as others to leaflet without being stopped by police.

Let me be one of the first to say, as a native Floridian - HA HA </Nelson Muntz>

I just want to continue to watch The Donald run roughshod over the rest of their sad bunch of candidates - primarily for the fact that its shredding the GOP from the inside out - but also, admittedly, for the lols. The worse the guy gets to, like, normal and rational people - the more the crazy base eats it up. Keep going, Donald - don’t let em get a word in edgewise!

To me, the funniest thing about all this is that about 95% of the coverage any other Republican candidate is getting right now is them having to respond to a question about Trump - I’m going to guess Reince didn’t quite plan things out this way :)

Well, you know, blacks and latinos either always vote for one of their own, or they’re so corrupt and stupid they vote for whoever gives them free stuff. So if we nominate a black guy or a latino, we get all those votes, just like when we put a woman on the ticket, we got all the lady votes.

Already happened. Someone it pointed out the other day.

“In the end Roosevelt fell far short of winning. He drew 4.1 million votes—27%, well behind Wilson’s 42% but ahead of Taft’s 23%. (6% went to Socialist Eugene Debs). He received 88 electoral votes, compared to 435 for Wilson and 8 for Taft.[12]

This was nonetheless the best showing by any third party since the modern two-party system was established in 1864. Roosevelt was the only third-party candidate to outpoll a candidate of an established party.

Touché. Kind of a special case, since Roosevelt had already served as President, as a Republican. But you’re right, the Taft wing did cement their takeover and go on.

Touché. Kind of a special case, since Roosevelt had already served as President, as a Republican. But you’re right, the Taft wing did cement their takeover and go on.

We’d be much better off if the Bull Moose party had replaced the Republicans….

I had a conversation with my business partner earlier today and he and I both agree that, as of right now, its basically a coin flip as to if Trump were to score the GOP nomination. We’re just not seeing anything that really shakes his numbers down - and we know the base kind of drives the primary process - the more the base thinks they are being disrespected / disenfranchised by the ‘establishment’ the worse its going to get for that establishment. At some point, someone in the GOP ‘smoky room’ is going to do the math and realize that it might be better to rally behind the guy (for all his faults) then continue to attempt to marginalize him.

No matter what, they’re in a major catch .22 - If he runs as an Independent, they’re toast.. (but probably lose more down ballot races). If he runs as the GOP nominee they’re still toast but at least they can make an ‘effort’ at the ballot box - perhaps saving a bunch of house seats in the process.

At the end of the day, do they decide they want 30% of the overall electorate or 40% - 43% - For the Presidential race, they’re screwed either way - but what works out better for them in the down ballot battles? That’s the question I’m sure is at least beginning to be rumbled about, somewhere.

If he DOES run as an Independent then its that much worse for them.. its a pretty fascinating political scenario - although of course, still very early in the game.

Progressives: Don’t Waste Your Money on the Group #BlackLivesMatters. They Are Actually Hurting Minority Progress

What the fucking fuck is this?

The leaders of BLM like the status quo, unless the single focus of future equality is centered on black women; and even more so black, lesbian, women. They like racial tension over a quest for universal growth for all persons struggling, because it gives them power and a voice. This obviously is not what the vast majority of those supporting BLM believe, but it is what the leadership believes. It’s for this reason that the leadership is not standing up against members who claim to speak on their behalf and who prevent Bernie Sanders from speaking at rallies.

I think Sanders can recover from this and come out on top. If he does it could possibly get me to vote for him. It’s his rabid fan club that is the problem. The Ring of Fire stuff is just outright fuckwittery.

Some may have doubted what we at Ring of Fire wrote this morning about the leadership of #BlackLivesMatter being militant and wanting the Progressive movement to fail, and especially Bernie Sanders. As we detailed in our story earlier today, the leadership of this organization wishes to resist the type of change that Bernie and Progressives are striving to bring about for all those struggling in America, including African Americans. They don’t appreciate others who are fighting for their cause and are following in the footsteps of Martin Luther King, Jr. to make change. They want change, if any, to occur solely through the following of the Black Panthers.

That’s some kinda lefty wingnut wormhole that comes from.

That’s actually a rather good question. Depending on how much the GOP irks The Trumpinator, I can see him rattling off to people in certain close races to ‘vote for this guy or gal’ where that guy or gal = whoever is NOT on the GOP’s ticket. I just can’t see him going away easily.. I think he LIKES to be a thorn in people’s side. He was probably thrilled when he heard Reince called off his Sunday show appearance - That type of stuff just feeds him.

I’ve also noticed a very odd obsession with how ‘alpha’ he is over in Freeperville. They really seem to love using that word over there. Odd bunch of peeps - but you only need to browse their circa 1998 website for a few minutes to know that :)

re: #91 Decatur Deb

Already happened. Someone it pointed out the other day.

“In the end Roosevelt fell far short of winning. He drew 4.1 million votes—27%, well behind Wilson’s 42% but ahead of Taft’s 23%. (6% went to Socialist Eugene Debs). He received 88 electoral votes, compared to 435 for Wilson and 8 for Taft.[12]

This was nonetheless the best showing by any third party since the modern two-party system was established in 1864. Roosevelt was the only third-party candidate to outpoll a candidate of an established party.

en.wikipedia.org

That 6% to Debs scared a whole lot of the establishment though. His platform would become part and parcel of the norm of our society as the way to “avoid” socialism. The irony has always been palpable to me.

“Let the people take heart and hope everywhere, for the cross is bending, midnight is passing, and joy cometh with the morning.”

Your misleading Drudge tweet of the day:

[Embedded content]

Link is to a National Review story that includes Carly Fiorina’s claim that she has “seen an uptick in financial support”. This could, of course, mean the difference between $10 and $100. An NBC survey is also cited that seems to show her and Cruz gained the most support for their debate performances, although both are way WAY behind Trump.

That is not any definition of “surge” I have ever heard.

This goes back to what I was saying on Thursday and Friday - what’s a surge? For a candidate who’s currently polling 1% to jump to 2%? From 5 to 7? So many of the candidates are within a MOE that it’s hard to tell who’s gained or lost. Support is thin for so many, including Fiorina that declaring her a winner is silly.

Bernie supporters have officially now gone full retard.

As the founders of BLM make clear, the movement (from their perspective) is all about black women. Anyone such as Bernie Sanders who wants to raise the plight of all struggling Americans offends them. They want the sole focus to be on them. They don’t want a peaceful movement that follows the lead of Martin Luther King, Jr. Instead, they want a militant movement that follows the lead of the Black Panther Party.

This is why Bernie frightens the leadership of BLM so much, because he is creating a huge movement of destroying the present system, which racist system gives the leaders of BLM their voice. These same leaders rather keep the status quo. If we at Ring of Fire are wrong, then we ask them to stand up and take a very strong stance against what is occuring at these rallies, and to state what their true goals are, and how we can assist them to help struggling black Americans.

Way to go assholes, your candidate had three fucking weeks to respond positively to these disruptions, and now you want to sell me on the idea that three black women are the real problem.

Bernie’s supporters want me to believe that these black women are stealing Bernie’s voice, forcing him to cancel planned events, to bail on scheduled meetings. They want me to think of him as a potential leader of this country but that all it takes to repeatedly derail his routine completely are a few legitimately pissed off black women.

And now They’re actually saying BLM’s leaders like the racial status quo that they’ve been protesting and trying for weeks to get him to deal with in something other than the simplistic panacea of economic reform? Seriously, the entire point of the protests is that this issue goes far beyond and simply can not be fixed by economic reform alone. The entire point is that the monomaniacal fixation of Bernie’s campaign isn’t enough, and casting BLM as a bunch of queer bullies stifling Sanders’ fragile fucking flower of a voice is just about the most counter productive answer to that imaginable.

It’s getting seriously fucking embarrassing to be white.

I am..although I honestly more often refer to myself as an agnostic. The primary reason being that I can’t truly state that there isn’t a God anymore than I can state that there is based upon the current available information we have access to. I can however say that there’s a lot more evidence to suggest that there isn’t. Its not an issue of hedging my bets - its more so that I’m a relatively logical / analytical kind of guy and I tend to go to where the evidence, facts, and logical extrapolations take me. I do find most theists to be.. less than spectacular people.. but to be fair, I haven’t interacted with a huge amount of them - and the ones that I have were probably a bit.. extreme in their theism to begin with.

We are insanely lucky: he’s 1) good (continues to grow every time I turn around) 2) walks the walk (4 of their 6 kids are adopted including two brothers from Liberia adopted while their civil war was still smoldering) 3) has been there 10 years and we expect the same since 4) we dodged a bullet and he was not made bishop 2 years ago. Would that even a tiny percentage of Christians were as good at it as he is… the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires reminds me of Art.

Not really from your point of view, but he doesn’t push gun control because the voters in his state do not want it. Vermont likes guns, and one can buy and carry handguns there without special permits. Also a lot of people there hunt and they are not supportive of laws that limit which rifles they can buy.

re: #117 Poligeek

Welcome Hatchling!
Trump won’t win the nomination. He is the front runner at about a quarter of the GOP, but that means 75% aren’t supporting him, and he has high negatives with that group. As the GOP field starts to winnow, the ones who survive will attract most of the followers of the ones who get out, and the establishment will do whatever it takes to deny Trump the nomination. The GOP will retain control of the House even in the event of a Trump third party run because of gerrymandering and because the people who come out to vote for Trump for President will vote GOP down ticket. As an independent candidate, there won’t be anybody but Tea Party Republicans to ride on his coattails.

It’s called a circular firing squad:

You might enjoy this story, DF.

Back in my day in the National Guard, I was in a pretty good unit. We did a lot to help train other units. One time my scout platoon was called on to do a weekend out in the bush “waking up” a clerical unit that hadn’t been out of the armory in a decade or so.

They were coming into their cantonment area on a road march. There was a dog leg in the road and we set an ambush down past the curve. Myself and one of my pvt’s were up with a radio up past the curve to give warning when they were coming. Our ROTC idiot lit up the first vehicle rather than waiting for the middle of the column as he was supposed to. This left many vehicles back up and around the curve that we were watching. Most of these less than experienced people started getting out of their vehicles and wandering around wondering what was going on. Me & Pvt hunkered down as low as we could but then some idiot saw our rucks sitting in the wood and decided to retrieve them. We waited till they were about 25 meters away and then, since we were using MILES, lit them up. We ended up with a ring of young idiots who would stand there and let us shoot them, walk to their officer to get the buzzer key’d off and I’d be watching as the key would turn. Turn. Bang. Turn. Bang. Etc. One pair of officer and idiot took 6 “kills” before they took cover. Eventually Pvt & I ran out of blanks and we just got up, grabbed our rucks and jogged on out of there. Neither of us was ever hit - and our MILES gear was on and working properly. I considered that a point of honor.

re: #132 Decatur Deb

First question: Are the supposed BLM leadership quotes true and in context? If so, we see a group that considers internal unity more important than wide progressive solidarity. Enough of that and we piss away the general election. It’s one that is going to be a harder fight than we expect.

This may be somewhat missing the point of the BLM focus. When you talk about ‘internal unity’ in BLM, you are dealing with a group whose focus is NOT GETTING SLAUGHTERED IN THE STREETS BY COPS. BLM is not focused on winning elections exactly, more like NOT GETTING SLAUGHTERED IN THE STREETS BY COPS.

The response to BLM in the larger progressive movement was All Lives Matter, which is seen by many in the BLM movement as an attempt to either suborn the BLM struggle, or erase it totally. So the BLM feels there is no ‘wide progressive solidarity’ already, because they have been absolutely attacked by progressive just for having the movement. Again, with the focus of not getting slaughtered in the streets by cops.

In my opinion, the BLM members will more than likely vote for the Democratic Party candidate, because what choice do they have? But if they shake up the candidates (basically Hillary and Sanders) enough, the candidates may be forced to actually make some policy promises that deal with the issue of police shooting unarmed black people all the damned time.

No, its not. But some of it is just that they feel that Sanders understands them when it comes to guns and other Dems don’t.

WHAT THE HELL, MEDIA? YOU HAVE BEEN SHITTING THE AIRWAVES WITH POLL AFTER POLL AFTER POLL FOR WEEKS LEADING UP TO THE FOX NEWS TOP 10 REPUBLICAN CIRCLE JERK AND NOW WHAT?….NOTHING!

I fully expected at least two, maybe three or four polls to come out today to show the “debate bounce” that all the “serious” fucktards we keep hearing about taking their rightful place ahead of Trump…

But no…we only get one Surveymonkey “scientific” poll that shows Cruz and some fucking doctor got a bounce in and the REAL candidates aren’t even in the top fucking five…except Rubio, but he gave up his testicles over abortion during the debate by denying the one reasonable position a Republican can have on the subject without getting flayed by their own party.

You want to know what my tinfoil hat tells me? They all did polls but they all show the same thing…the Republican base is fucked in the head and they all want Trump.

re: #138 JadeHelmCurious

Preach it.

I’ve been reading Battle Cry of Freedom and last night I was treated to a float down the river of shit that was the 1850’s in the USA.

These chapters are loaded with quotes from Southerners describing their love for slavery, and their hopes to see it spread into places like Nicaragua and possibly the entire Gulf of Mexico. Noteworthy are the several failed expeditions by people I can only describe as GROUPS OF MONSTROUS ASSHOLES, trying to pry Cuba and Nicaragua loose from their respective colonial powers, and bring them into the US economic sphere as slave territories.

Page after page, quote after quote, painting a fairly comprehensive picture of the South as generally controlled by posturing, vicious, honor-obsessed thug life losers who quite firmly and happily saw dark-skinned people as Not People At All, and frankly seemed to enjoy the idea of fucking over anybody who stood in the way of spreading pure freaking Evil like a cancer over the whole earth, if they could manage it. And that’s before you even get to the part about Bleeding Kansas.

The sick part to me was that a lot of the quoted rhetoric was fundamentally no different from what you hear in the mouths of modern Republicans. The only difference is that they can’t openly say the n-word on national TV. All the resentment, all the failure, all the shit attitude, all the honor and “good Chrischun upright civilization vs. Filthy Librul Yankee” bullshit, is all still there. It’s astonishing.

And after you read this, which by the way is not a work of Chomsky trying to convince you that white capitalism is garbage, you start to wonder if maybe White Culture really is just plain f-ed up and evil. I’ve never felt racial shame before.

Gods help us, if there’s another war along these lines, this time the North better finish the job, not just politically but culturally, too.

Here’s some interesting research on the Seattle group (daily kos link).

The group is called Outside Agitators 206. They created a BLM facebook page two days before Sanders speech.

To succeed, the Black Lives Matter Movement must transform the politics of Black America. By definition, that means declaring war on the Democratic Party, and forcing Black politicians and activists to choose between the Party and the people’s struggle.

As usual, the Democrats will try to make Black people more angry at the terminally racist Republican Party than at the police and local administration of their (typically) Democrat-run city. Hillary Clinton is already making noises of empathy with Blacks suffering under the urban police state. However, the Black Lives Matter movement has no institutional stake in the victory of either party, but is, in fact, locked in mortal political struggle with other Black people in the Democratic Party. These Black Democrats will insist on a truce, a cessation of agitation against national or local Democrats, until after the election.

I can definitely see the need to make movements like this separate from the parties at a certain level. But the second paragraph seems to indicate two disturbing things about this group:
1. It doesn’t really take into account that you generally have to choose one of the two parties to get anything done.
2. It’s going after blacks that are trying to change the Democratic party.

The diarist believes the entire purpose of this group is to drive a wedge between the BLM movement and Democrats.

Again, the BLM movement doesn’t need help driving a wedge, other Democrats are already doing that. The variousLivesMatter movements and attacks against the BLM are already doing that. I’ve actually had the discussion with friends who are black and think we need to focus on teen pregnancy and black on black crime. This is called ‘respectability politics’, and it’s becoming much less acceptable, especially after Cosby got called out so vigorously. The being nice to Democratic candidates doesn’t actually seem to get them to focus on your issues, whatever they are. So BLM acts as a squeaky wheel, and maybe we’ll see some change.

Speaking of kids, I have a list of movies I try to show my kids before they leave for college. Since my kids are 5 years apart, it means I get to watch some of the multiple times, because, even though I’m fairly open to letting my kids watch things (I don’t buy the sex/violence argument), there are some things you just have to wait until they are at a certain age. So, last night, I watched Rocky Horror Picture Show with my 15 year old. I think it left the necessary impression. Columbia was his favorite.

The vehicle is actually a ZSU 23-4, a former Soviet-made self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. If Trump did decide to establish a third party, which he could fund himself if he choose to, it would be America’s first fascist party of any electoral significance. It shows all of the hallmarks of fascism: xenophobia, a scapegoated minority group, militarism, simplistic “solutions” to complex policy positions and a personality cult. I know the GOP already exhibits a lot of these symptoms, but it has lacked a charismatic “great man” to build a cult of personality around until now.

It has nothing to do with gun control. Snipers are people who simply spend hours learning how to use a specific weapon. If I wasn’t against killing people and wanted to go into the armed forces, I’d probably want to be a sniper. I loved shooting as a kid and I was a good shot through my twenties before I stopped hunting altogether. But that, too, is meaningless. You can take any asshole off the street, and if he or she has decent vision and a steady hand and learns how to breathe out as they squeeze the trigger, they can become a crack sniper.

It’s training, not culture. Every country that has snipers has good ones…even North Korea.

Next time the biathlon is on in the Olympics, pay attention.

It doesn’t have a tank’s armor, though. The ZSU’s armor is very thin and 1991 and 2003 the M2 Bradley experienced no trouble killing it with 25mm autocannon fire.

The reason the ZSU is used in towns or in mountain areas is that its high angle guns let it fire at infantry staging an abush from high ground or the upper floors of a building.

Daesh won’t likely get to keep that thing for long, for the ZSU 23-4 is still a high-priority target for attacking aircraft. For good reason, as the Saudi Air force found out when ZSU 23-4 manned by rebels formerly part of the Yemani army shot down a Saudi Tornado fighter-bomber. Those AAA vehicles are nasty in close, so they tend to get hit by a Maverick as soon as they are located and ID’d.

Not … quite. There is a huge psychological element involved.

I have a good friend who was a sniper in the US Army Rangers. He once told me that ANYONE can be a sniper - Once. It’s the people who can watch the results through a scope and pull the trigger a second time that make real snipers.

As a tanker I thought a whole lot about the fire that would have killed me if we’d gone to war in 1983. Sitting in my iron coffin was bad enough. But watching the other guy’s head explode? Nope. Not me. I had the technical skill thanks to putting deer in my freezer but I was not someone who could make the leap to doing that to people.

Eh, I’ll forgive them that mistake. It’s not a stretch for somebody who doesn’t know armored vehicles to call that a kind of tank. Armored, has treads, turret on top…

Yes, the radar is missing, but a quad-23mm would be very nasty against surface targets too. These nihilist dickheads must be having so much fun… I bet they take turns killing people with it.

Had a great day today. Got to get a number of questions answered about a line of gear. Got to dive some stuff I wanted to try. Made some contacts with other shops and people. Got to dive with a couple of seriously good (and I mean rock-solid underwater) divers and felt like I acquitted myself with honors. My new dive computer ROCKS!!!!

Down side, my 45 dollar Casio dive watch had a pin break and it is now somewhere in the muck around 100 feet. Should have gotten a ‘zulu’ band for it. (it’s a design where even if a pin breaks, the watch stays on the strap) In any case, I’ve gotten well over a year’s use from it, and it was holding up great. Oh well, off to Amazon I go.

Chips and a cold drink are in order all around.

America has had some seriously deadly snipers, too. So has Canada, where long-range rifles are also much easier to get than in the UK.

Yes, true that. My point is that being steeped in civilian gun culture isn’t necessarily any kind of advantage in providing an army with this kind of capability.

The NRA was originally created in 1871 in an effort to improve the then-abysmal level of marksmanship in the US Army. They hadn’t made much progress by 1876, when some of Custer’s men at Little Bighorn had never fired their weapons before, and very few had anything like the skill to use the Springfield carbine to its potential. It’s doubtful that better shooting could have saved Custer’s command, but poor marksmanship became a public issue after the debacle and the army instituted a regular program of training and practice.
By the 20th century, the NRA’s original objectives had been achieved and it turned to other things.

How is the following paragraph “jingoistic”?

Last week, the College Board released its revised APUSH framework and, to our pleasant surprise, it’s not just better — it’s flat-out good. It’s good because it offers a contextualized, robust account of American history. It no longer talks merely about the ravages of capitalism, but also about American economic dynamism; no longer only the moral complexities of Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb, but also the fight against fascism of which that decision was part. No longer does it frame colonial and 19th-century history almost wholly in terms of 21st-century notions of race dynamics; now it takes care to acknowledge the layers of ethnic tensions and the significance of other ideas and imperatives. Religion and civil society are now in evidence. The caricature of Reagan has given way to a reasonable treatment of what he sought to do.

The vehicle is actually a ZSU 23-4, a former Soviet-made self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. Last year, I asked renowned historian James McPherson of Princeton University what he thought of the framework. McPherson, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1989 book “Battle Cry of Freedom” and is a former president of the American Historical Association, said this:

I am somewhat familiar with the controversy, and my sentiments are entirely on the side of the AP History framework. It was put together by teachers and historians who have been working on it for years. It is a sound framework that will help teachers improve the teaching of AP history. The criticism of it seems motivated mainly by right-wing politics.

And frankly when it comes to teaching and discussing negative aspects of American history, American cons are no different from ultra Japanese nationalists who deny the atrocities committed by the empire or the Turks who continue to deny the Armenian genocide. They think any presentation of history that isn’t rah rah America fuck yeah shouldn’t be taught and frankly as an owner of a BA in history, that’s crap scholarship. We have a great country and a proud history but we need to teach our history even our bad parts and that yes includes the bad parts where laborers rights were trampled to protect wealthy interests, where slavery prevailed over 70 years after the Constitution was ratified, where African-Americans were second class citizens for years, etc.

More like the necessity of defeating Japan decisively and undeniably. Both US civilian policymakers and the military remembered the myth that had arisen in Germany that the German Army had been “stabbed in the back” and they wanted no repeat of that. It was considered crucial that both Germany and Japan admit they had been defeated and then be fully occupied to ensure the formation of new governments and to ensure the population could not deny they had been defeated.

McCarthyism? Buckley was a huge McCarthy supporter.
Civil Rights? Yep wrong.
Apartheid and other “enemy of my enemy is my friend dictatorships” in Africa and South America? Yep wrong.
And today.
Women’s reproductive issues? Well Kevie Williamson thinks women who make the right to choose should be hanged.
Civil Rights? Employed white nationalist John Derbyshire for years and just recently called Deray a race hustler. Hmmmm. There’s a trend I’m noticing with NR and it’s they’re wrong more than they’re right- pun intended.

There was progress accomplished but your friends at NRO want to ignore that it did come at a cost. Talking child labor, industrial accidents caused by employers who did not want safety regulations for their workers, etc. The Industrial Revolution was a great accomplishment for our country and it is quite amazing that we went in just a century from the horse and buggy to automobile and airplane but it did come out at a cost- a human cost that too many laissez-faire capitalist cheerleaders ignore.

Yep. And then we bitch about “rude Europeans.” Hell, I do appreciate our contribution to winning the second world war but note I said contribution. I saw a t-shirt on the Boardwalk this past week that said something to the effect of “America: Winner of back to back world wars.” I’m not offended by that but I found it unbelievably tacky and yes to a degree offensive for the Soviet soldiers and civilians who gave a whole lot more than we did in WWII. Not that our contributions weren’t vital but I think too many Americans don’t appreciate the cost that was paid in the East.

Been away.

Two years from now we will be entertaining President Walker or President Clinton. Which of them is most likely to help people NOT GET SLAUGHTERED IN THE STREETS BY COPS? Or does it even matter?

You have to learn from the good and bad to understand history. Teaching children America rah rah doesn’t teach them anything. It’ s not merely butchering history but it’s also teaching our students terrible critical thinking skills.

The book “Lies My Teacher Told Me” by James Loewen really blew my mind open about how history is written. I was your age, perhaps younger, when I first read it in Steamboat Springs, CO. It inspired me to learn more! A couple of years after I read that book, I was back in college, a guy in his late 20s trying to finish a bachelor’s degree he barely started a decade earlier.

Usually I mention this is a jocular manner, but…seriously, the editor of NRO is a guy who wrote a book about how current-day liberals are the *real* fascists, ideologically in sync with Hitler.

Yeah. That’s not someone I can have polite disagreements with. If Jonah wants to have a serious ideological discussion fine, but the second you compare my ideology, the ideology by the way of the presidents that were in charge of this country in the fight against Nazism to Nazism you can kiss my liberal ass. I won’t compare conservatives to Nazis. I do think Nazism is a right wing ideology and objective evidence agrees with that but do I think right wing = Nazi, nope, but that doesn’t stop the pricks at NRO for likening any socialist like they did with Sanders to Stalin or Hugo Chavez.

Okay fair enough, we now have Tim Kaine in the Senate and Kaine is great. But now Webb thinks he’s presidential material? You know how they say first impressions are everything? I’ve seen what happens when people with an agenda are responsible for writing history and the results aren’t pretty. What purpose does it serve telling kids that slavery wasn’t so bad? Is it to soothe the conscience of conservatives who think that any portrayal of what our founders did that doesn’t paint them as secular Gods should be ignored or minimized. Like it or not, most of our early presidents and leaders were slave owners. Does it mean that I even think Jefferson, Washington, and those guys were evil and that I don’t appreciate their contributions to the founding of our country? Nope. Not at all but our contradictions as a nation are part of our history too. While our founders wrote about “all men being created equally”, they themselves including the man that penned those words were owning other human beings. Now on the flip side, I’m definitely in favor of also teaching about how Franklin was involved in an abolition society and even Alexander Hamilton who isn’t exactly going to win homecoming king in most discussions about America’s early years was an opponent of slavery. Contradictions are history and to ignore them is to ignore history. Sorry for rambling about this but this is something legitimately important to me since as I said, it is what I got my major in.

It can go further than just the initial scam. Recent reports here about the types of Australian’s being arrested in Hong Kong, China etc or at our border in Australia , reveal that they were initially scammed for money by Nigerian emails, which went on to get them enlisted as drug couriers.

abc.net.au

Elderly pensioners, legally blind, mentally ill, children, have a brain injury, disability pensioners, with the same story about it starting with an email.

RICHARD GRANT, AUSTRALIAN CRIME COMMISSION: Since 2013, there’s been 39 people arrested at the border who have been clearly groomed by these syndicates that are operating offshore and these people have been arrested at the border with drugs.

SEAN RUBINSZTEIN-DUNLOP: Two thirds of those dealt with by the Australian courts were cleared after lengthy jail time. Australian authorities have told 7.30 they’re part of a wave of vulnerable people - the frail, mentally ill, elderly and children who have been duped or pressured into smuggling drugs from Asia into Australia by crime groups from West Africa.

On the AP USH matter, have I missed something? The last I heard, the RW was all batshit crazy about the latest framework, so much so that students and teachers boycotted schools to protest RW school boards trying to monkey with the standards.

Regardless, the AP framework is not supposed to compel a certain historical analysis. It’s supposed to treat the study of history as analysis, which is how it is handled at the collegiate level. If you all are now saying the College Board has thrown in with the American Exceptionalists and revisionists, I’m gonna be really depressed.

The College Board requires an annual audit of the texts, scope and sequence of each AP course. I had to do it for AP Physics. It’s not terribly difficult to “pass” the audit, but if your course is not up to snuff, the College Board will forbid the school from using the AP trademark or advertising the course as preparation for the CB exams.

Also, if the teacher is doing a lousy job, the students’ AP scores will all suck.

Three things about that NBC/Survey Monkey poll.

Number one, which should give Reince Priebus permanent heartburn:

54% of Trump supporters said that if Trump didn’t get the Republican nomination and ran as as independent, they would vote for him.

2. Less than 50% of those polled watched any of the debates (18% watched both; 2% watched the “kiddie debate”, 21% watched the main debate.)

3. So their “who won the debates” question was based on ” From what you have heard and read, who do you think won or did the best job in the Republican debates?”

And a bit more:

Also, they didn’t release all the poll questions—they said they’re holding questions 1-5, 9, and 11-13 for future release. (looks like they held back 25 and 26 as well) The whole poll was 29 questions, and 10 of them were demographic questions. So, of 19 actual questions, they only published 8 answers—and some of the questions were bogus.

And this is what Chuck Toad was hanging his hat on? What a joke.

‘Trigger-happy’ brother of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback accused of terrorizing neighbor family

According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, Jim Brownback is known by his neighbors and residents of Linn County as a trigger-happy bully who uses his famous last name to get his way and avoid the consequences of his actions.

“Adversaries say he has woven a liquor-infused tapestry of fear colored by intimidation, abuse and lies. The saga features stalking, death threats, trespassing, drive-by gunfire, massive explosions, cattle theft, loan defaults, hit-and-run driving and marital strife,” wrote the Capital-Journal’s Tim Carpenter.

Locals fear him, said Carpenter, and many were reluctant to speak on record for fear of reprisal in one of Jim Brownback’s campaigns of so-called “neighborhood terrorism.”

re: #400 bratwurst

I honestly try not to be in the habit of pimping my own pages, but I just spent more than 90 minutes getting this one together…and I think remembering a true hero is not a bad way to spend a few moments of Sunday night:

The Obituary of a Canadian Doctor and a Lesson for Those Who Demonize Federal Agencies

Oustanding page. I love reading about other great Canadians.

How is the following paragraph “jingoistic”?

No link, per requests.

This is not a good time to defend the National Review. Think before you post.

If it does, we can all see it, in real time, on the internet. There is that.

Thanks! I was familiar with the awful story of thalidomide, but had never known the name of the hero who prevented a bad situation from becoming much worse until coming across her obituary in my newspaper over dinner tonight. I read that she eventually became a dual national, but the fact she was born and died in Canada certainly gives you claim to her in my book. I would guess there is a very short list of Canadians (or other foreign nationals) who have been honored by US presidents like that.
