I realize people mean well, but I’m going to get a t-shirt that says “Let Go of the Damn Door. Thanks anyway.”

I want one that says: “Do you really think none of the twelve us standing here waiting tried the door already?”

New trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who season is out.

Also, just a tidbit of information from folks speculating that the futuristic city depicted in both trailers are of Gallifrey.
It isn’t Gallifrey.

It’s Skaro.

If you doubt this, check out images from way back in 1963 for “The Daleks”.

Was able to get through Carnival of Monsters./em> It did get better towards the end. Still the worst Classic Who Story I have seen thus far. Though Edge of Destruction was forgettable.

Still can’t decide which Doctor I like more between 2 and 3.

However, my personal ranking is

11 or 12
then
2 or 3
then
War
then
9
then
10

Onto The Green Death.

Old news, but I just heard about it tonight at dinner from my daughter’s friend, who was there at the mall with her newborn baby at the time of the shooting.
kcci.com

Long story short, a security guard was pissed this girl was ignoring him, so he shot her — three times in the back. He had a permit for the handgun used.

Not a mass shooting, but my daughter’s friend was still scared shitless, hearing those popping noises and people screaming.

That’s what I think too.

Also, Doctor and Clara are handsy. Everyone I talk to think they are an item, and stuff put out by the BBC and Jenna Coleman is helping with that theory.

I think Gallifrey will come back at the end of Capaldi’s & Moffat’s run. That he will find it, and regenerate into the 13th, or the process of getting it back will force the regeneration.

If Coleman stays on for Series 10 like Capaldi wants, I can up up with an scenario that would make people cry, and hate Moffat forever.

After Rand Paul got gnawed on by Trump today….I have a vision. A selfish, wrong vision, but I’m just that shallow.

Ted Cruz going after The Donald. And Trump’s retort.

I am in Texas. Some of my friends and family are die-hard Cruz zealots. I am going to need to see this happen in order to feel joy.

Then Trump can go 3rd party. After Ted Cruz is savaged.

Thanks for your support.

Moffat is expected to leave at the end of next Series.

He has said he is beginning to get worn out, and wants to start writing small little plays.

And Doctors usually last about 3 seasons.

So, it is likely we will have a whole new crew come 2017.

Question is, who could replace Moffat as showrunner. There is really no one who can readily, and apparently fill his shoes.

The closest I could come up with would be Neil Cross, who wrote Rings of Akhetan and Hide. Or Jamie Matheson, who wrote Mummy on the Orient Express and Flatline.

The pictures coming out this morning (morning in China) from Tianjin are biblical. Whatever blew up there was Yooge. Someone should be fired.

cnn.com

That is some major league destruction. The heat and blast wave must have been tremendous.

Chances are we’ll never know what the trigger and explosive was (the Chinese don’t generally release that info), but that damage looks like a fuel-air bomb with a heavier-than-air primary.

Damn.

Oh, and good evening, Lizard Nation.

In news of interest, US District Court Judge David Bunning (son of former Senator and Baseball HOFer Jim Bunning) granted injunctive relief against Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis and ordered her to resume issuing marriage licenses, which she has refused to do since ssm became legal. Davis has asked for a stay while she appeals to the 6th Circuit.

Nah, a 42,000 pound bomb doesn’t do that much damage. Inverse square law of overpressure and such. That CNN picture of a multi-story column and slab building that was completely gutted tells a very different story, unless it was immediately adjacent to the blast point. And the thermal shock to that ginormous VW holding area.. well, glad I wasn’t there. That was a human-being-bursting-into-flames heat pulse.

Kind of reminds me of a very small tactical nuke, actually, like one of our old 155 mm artillery shells.

But the smaller detonations building up to The Big One tells me, no.

Yeah, but of what? I mean, this is a 24/7 port in a city of thirteen million people. What would be the fuel source? Do they have a big ass Liquid Natural Gas facility there? Do they routinely handle LNG tankers? That could account for it. But this was not a Halifax ammo ship or a Baytown fertilizer ship.

This happened fast. Those were slow motion disasters that developed over several hours.

I Hate Ukrainian Nazis! And I hate Nazis even more when they get their sick talons into children. Russian propagandists have a field day whenever photos like this come out, and its easy to understand why. The ‘Azov Regiment’ uses the rune of the 2nd SS Panzer Division ‘Das Reich’, which committed horrible crimes virtually where ever they went in a war that saw them in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Hungary, France, and Belgium.

re: #26 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Yeah, that was me. But the problem with this being a fuel-air bomb scenario is that they lay out a sheet of flammable gas before self-detonating. In this particular case, at least one, maybe two detonations occurred before The Thing blew the city to hell.

It’s not likely that with on-going ignition sources from the one (or two) previous detonations you would be able to get a spread of gas for the massive detonation that a fuel-air bomb can create. The fires from the previous detonations would short-circuit the whole physics of the weapon concept.

So there has to be another explanation.

(By the way, this is all Emergency Response porn for us in the business. I am lurking on an On Scene Supervisor board and people are going ape-shit. This is a really big deal. Folks are looking at the damage and predicting hundreds to thousands of fatalities, based on the initial damage reports. Early days, but it has certainly taken their minds off of the Durango spill, as it is awful but mundane and nothing that can be controlled once it occurs. The Genie is out of the bottle. This incident is pure sex for ER folks.)

Oh, I agree. All I was saying was that if you dropped 42 1,000 pound bombs on a 7 X 6, 100-yard grid, you would do much more damage than a 42,000 pound bomb detonating at a single point. The damage in those photographs indicates a much larger explosion.

Looking at the video from the Tianjin explosion. It looks more like a bulk, ie uncontained, solid explosive than FAE, maybe boxed TNT or something like that. Note the spark-like streamers in the fireball from the second explosion, the really big one. This is not characteristic of a gas explosion. The close up video seems to show a point source on or near the ground for the second explosion.

Compare with the video of the “100 ton test” which detonated 108 tons of boxed TNT/RDX to calibrate various instruments before the Trinity nuclear test in 1945.

(Note the guy pounding the cases into position with a mallet at about 1:10. Nope. Nope. No way in hell.)

Nine firefighters confirmed dead, the rest missing. 17 total confirmed dead so far, not clear if that includes the 9 but that’s the way I read it. Anybody within two, maybe three miles probably lost their hearing and received significant flash burns if they could see the fireball. Then throw in glass and debris lacerations and injuries from collapsing structures.

Police in Tianjin said an initial blast took place at shipping containers in a warehouse for hazardous materials owned by Ruihai Logistics, a company that says it is properly approved to handle such materials. State media said senior management of the company had been detained by authorities, and that President Xi Jinping has demanded severe punishment for anyone found responsible for the explosions.

They’ll probably give the company’s CEO something resembling a trial then execute him, resuscitate him, then execute him again. Hard to envision them letting the guy live after this. Whether the Chinese government uses this to enact strict industrial safety regs remains to be seen.

Pig wrestling could turn into assault charges at Utah County Fair

The protesters, estimated at a dozen or less, were outnumbered by the 1,500 to 2,000 people in attendance to watch the annual event. The teams participating didn’t feel that the activity hurt the animals but when some protesters stepped into the wrestling area, they were pushed and tossed over a fence. It is possible those actions will bring assault charges.

I shook the hand of one of the most powerful people in the world today. I saw my senator Cory Gardner wandering around Vail today with his family and nanny. He seemed in good spirits, he told me he was having fun. His young son was getting down to a bluegrass rendition of “Maggie’s Farm” (I was working security for a bluegrass show in Vail, rough life) and Senator Gardner dutifully filmed most of it on his phone.

When I shook his hand I bit my tongue. I wanted to say something like “I didn’t vote you, man” but he was kind enough and was clearly happy and having a good time. Oh, and I’m taller than him!

Yeah, watching the news roundups of it, I have to agree with War Tardis; the second blast was something on the order of the 1917 Halifax Explosion, probably the equivalent of a couple of kilotons of TNT. I’m seeing elsewhere the (official) death toll is now up to 44, and sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes up considerably from there.

This one’s probably gonna rank as one of the deadliest industrial disasters in history when all is said and done.

Korea was targeted after WWII for proselytizing and sure enough decades later fundamentalist/evangelical Christians are quite numerous in RoK. When I was living in Japan many Koreans I met were such.

For those who missed it - and I sure did - Biologos apparently had a get together in which they continued their effort at syncretizing science and Christianity. Yesterday they put up a bunch of videos on Youtube.

The Biologos videos are, to me, mostly disappointing. They just can’t deal with owning up to what real differences exist. Then again, they are funded to “dialogue” and thus intend to grey out lines of differences.

Anyway, I think a couple of the presenters are still stuck in a level of self-deception, unwilling to take the real step - away from their previous presuppositions.

Ard Louis raises the spectre of “scientism” - which is Biologos’ current bugaboo about the non-believing scientists. In doing this they are just doing the same thing that the run-of-the-mill fundamentalists does at a cruder level, but it’s the same basic thing.

One video which is perhaps informative for those not versed in the history of creationism is that of Ted Davis, who is part of Biologos and thus a defender of their approach, but still gives some good short history of the matter:

It’s probably easier to classify the firefighters as dead, they know how many went in and how many didn’t come out. As for the civilians, the survivors are probably spread across multiple hospitals and given the number of businesses, it’s probably hard to say exactly how many were in the area at the time of the explosion.

With any luck, while the firemen were running towards the initial fire/explosion, everybody else was bookin’ for the countryside. That there was a response shows some timelag between multiple events.

Heh, it’s Iowa State Fair time, which means among the hogs, chickens, cattle, and horses being led around for show in the pavilions, so are the politicians:

[…]

Of course, an expected attendance of over 1 million makes the fair a must-attend for presidential candidates in both parties as they try to court voters here in the first-in-the-nation caucus state. One of their top fairgrounds destinations is the Des Moines Register’s Soapbox, a modern take on the old-fashioned political activity of “getting up on the soapbox.” Presidential candidates are given 20 minutes to make their pitch to attendees in any format. Hundreds turn out to see the spectacle, and candidates are often heckled.

Last time around, Mitt Romney made his infamous “corporations are people” comment at the soapbox. In 2007, then-Senator Barack Obama skipped the soapbox, instead taking daughters Sasha and Malia for a spin on the bumper cars.

Fourteen Republican candidates are expected to participate in the soapbox. On the Democratic side, soapbox participants include Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee. Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton will also attend the fair on Saturday.

There’s a really really juicy story brewing in PA. The Attorney General, Kathleen Kane has been charged with leaking sealed grand jury evidence and covering it up, and related offenses. Kane does not seem to deny the facts of the case, but insists that the charges are politically motivated by the old boys’network. She insists that ending a corruption investigation in the Philadelphia area because it was only targeting Democrats has nothing to do with anything. Instead she says that the treasure trove of pornographic emails she is holding onto (sealed by a judge) will reveal the network that has aligned against her.

THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT!!!

philly.com

“After saying her legal defense is not about her being a victim of some old boys’ network, she explained how some old boys’ network took her down because “that was their plan all along.”

“No names, of course. Just, you know, a vast porn conspiracy.

“She claimed that swappers of “pornographic, racial and religiously offensive” emails inside and outside the Attorney General’s Office under Tom Corbett worked to prevent being linked to their “filthy email chain” by discrediting her.

“So when she announced during her long investigation of the Jerry Sandusky case that all agency emails were being reviewed, the filth-mongers decided to get her.”

Long before Lucy Mercer, Kay Summersby or Monica Lewinsky, there was Nan Britton, who scandalized a nation with stories of carnal adventures in a White House coat closet and endured a ferocious backlash for publicly claiming that she bore the love child of President Warren G. Harding.

Now nearly a century later, according to genealogists, new genetic tests confirm for the first time that Ms. Britton’s daughter, Elizabeth Ann Blaesing, was indeed Harding’s biological child. The tests have solved one of the enduring mysteries of presidential history and offer new insights into the secret life of America’s 29th president. At the least, they demonstrate how the march of technology is increasingly rewriting the nation’s history books.

snip

The testing also found that President Harding had no ancestors from sub-Saharan Africa, answering another question that has intrigued historians. When Harding ran for president in 1920, segregationist opponents claimed he had “black blood.”

Its first race in May 2010 drew 4,500 people; today, between 7,000 and 10,000 people pay about $200 each to enter one of 60 annual races offered in seven countries. Roughly 2 million people have competed so far, and Tough Mudder is estimated to be worth more than $86 million, according to Business Insider.
It’s also inspired a growing $200 million annual “mud race” market, which means Tough Mudder has had to up the ante to stay competitive.
In recent years, it’s added electric shocks, tear gas and two fire-based events; one drops participants through a ring of fire, the other forces them to slide through a 5-foot flame into water.

MOREHEAD, Ky. (APWSAZ) - The Rowan County clerk’s office has turned away a gay couple seeking a marriage license, defying a federal judge’s order that dismissed her argument involving religious freedom.

Hours after the judge’s order to issue licenses to same-sex couples, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’ office still turned away David Moore and David Ermold on Thursday morning.

Deputy clerk Nathan Davis says the office was advised by attorneys with the Christian law firm Liberty Counsel to continue refusing same-sex couples as it appeals the order.

Because so many other conditions come into play, try to predict what effect an El Nino will have is fraught with low confidence.

Plus, I wonder about the many other conditions which have changed since 1997. Overall the sea surface temperature is higher, and if you look at that side by side animation you will see some significant differences in SST in other parts of the Pacific.

A couple of weeks old now but getting a bit of coverage:

The association between intelligence and lifespan is mostly genetic

Background: Several studies in the new field of cognitive epidemiology have shown that higher intelligence predicts longer lifespan. This positive correlation might arise from socioeconomic status influencing both intelligence and health; intelligence leading to better health behaviours; and/or some shared genetic factors influencing both intelligence and health. Distinguishing among these hypotheses is crucial for medicine and public health, but can only be accomplished by studying a genetically informative sample.

Methods: We analysed data from three genetically informative samples containing information on intelligence and mortality: Sample 1, 377 pairs of male veterans from the NAS-NRC US World War II Twin Registry; Sample 2, 246 pairs of twins from the Swedish Twin Registry; and Sample 3, 784 pairs of twins from the Danish Twin Registry. The age at which intelligence was measured differed between the samples. We used three methods of genetic analysis to examine the relationship between intelligence and lifespan: we calculated the proportion of the more intelligent twins who outlived their co-twin; we regressed within-twin-pair lifespan differences on within-twin-pair intelligence differences; and we used the resulting regression coefficients to model the additive genetic covariance. We conducted a meta-analysis of the regression coefficients across the three samples.

Results: The combined (and all three individual samples) showed a small positive phenotypic correlation between intelligence and lifespan. In the combined sample observed r = .12 (95% confidence interval .06 to .18). The additive genetic covariance model supported a genetic relationship between intelligence and lifespan. In the combined sample the genetic contribution to the covariance was 95%; in the US study, 84%; in the Swedish study, 86%, and in the Danish study, 85%.

Conclusions: The finding of common genetic effects between lifespan and intelligence has important implications for public health, and for those interested in the genetics of intelligence, lifespan or inequalities in health outcomes including lifespan.

I have different misgivings. A nickel a round is not about revenue it’s about discouragement. In small calibers (.22!) that’s a lot of money. If I proposed a tax like that on a more popular item (not a necessity but a popular item dangerous if misused) I think the regressive nature of that tax would be an issue the critics could work pretty well. Taxes on specific items are called sin taxes, alcohol and cigarettes. Another instance where taxation as a discouragement is accepted. It’s easy to point out those other items have no mention in an amendment or a recent ruling affirming them for self defense.

You’re right: I’d much prefer that gun owners, and that includes me, be required to carry liability insurance on every gun they own. The ammunition tax is perfectly legal and could be used to defray the costs of policing gun-related crime and/or set up a victims’ fund. Gun owners have collectively done their best to ensure laughably easy access to firearms and ammunition. They can collectively start paying the public costs that result from the proliferation of firearms.

50+ dead; there’s easily 400+ casualties, if not 10 times that amount given the size of the explosions and the pressure wave knocking out glass for miles. That it occurred in a warehouse in a commercial district at night is a saving grace. Had it been during the day, there quite likely would have been a far greater death toll and casualties in the 10s of thousands.

As it is, the explosions set off numerous fires and debris flung for miles around (along with shattered glass and collapsed structures for miles in all directions.

I have to believe that the Chinese govt is doing what it can to minimize the scope - and Weibo and other social media are clearly being throttled to minimize the talk within China. The government doesn’t want people to know the true scope of the disaster.

It’s again that “sacred”/language thing. You’re not supposed to talk about fetuses and their organs in a matter-of-factly tone. The underlying assumption is that they’re human persons, which is not true by def at least before the 21th week (after that it gets hairy). So the matter-of-factly tone makes people squeamish. Plus, of course, so is seeing the dead fetuses. (Embryos not so much, now, why would that be.)

They should hear pathologists talk about cadavers though (which were actual persons once, unlike most aborted fetuses). Or cops about the vics (that is, victims). Or the surgeons.

Yes, people who do all the “dirty” jobs that make us cringe get used to it, speak about what they do very calmly and develop their own jargon. Boo hoo.

I have a book in my library, an autobiography by a guy who was a hitter for the mob in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

At the end of the book among his acknowledgements of circumstances that contributed to his career was the patchwork nature of the laws in the US. One of the ways he made money was by buying cigarettes in Virginia and smuggling them into New York. Slap fake tax labels on the packages and he had a nice revenue stream.

He also thanked the US prison system for being a better system for making criminals than any school system the mob could put together. He said, “You send a young man to jail on a marijuana charge and in five years he’ll show you twelve ways to pick every lock in existence.”

General Zod has announced his run for 2016 as a GOPer.

He’s got a clear policy platform (Kneel, and let Zod take care of all you pathetic Earthlings), unlike the rest of the pathetic candidates who can’t even be bothered to put together a platform showing just how crazy they are.

General Zod knows war and defense. He will issue a scorched earth policy to anyone who doesn’t kneel.

If you think Jade Helm was something for militias to get worked up about and for GOP candidates to be “concerned” about, don’t you worry. General Zod has a plan for that too.

If you question Zod, you will die. No exceptions.

This makes for a much more efficient government. All decisions are final. No Supreme Court (that too will be dispensed with since General Zod is the final word).

Oh wait. My mistake. That would appear to be the combined platforms of Huckabee, Paul, Carson, Christie, etc. /

Off-topic, but update in the IKEA case:

The elder suspect (36-year old) has woken up at the ICU, and apparently is taking responsibility for his actions (i.e. confessed). The district court approved the prosecutors request for remand for two counts of murder.
The younger suspect has been released, as the district court denied the prosecutors request for remand. He has consistently denied having anything to do with the murders, was uninjured when apprehended and had no blood spatter on him.

Thanks for posting this. It clarifies things quite a bit. The damage radius is huge. It’s an interesting comparison to images of the Texas City explosion. If anything this appears to be worse. CANDIDATE PROTECTION

Secret Service Protection of Presidential Candidates

In regard to presidential campaign, the Secret Service is authorized by law (18 United States Code § 3056) to protect:

Major presidential and vice presidential candidates and their spouses within 120 days of a general presidential election. As defined in statute, the term “major presidential and vice presidential candidates” means those individuals identified as such by the Secretary of Homeland Security after consultation with an advisory committee.

The Secret Service has no role in determining who is to be considered a major candidate. The Secretary of the Homeland Security determines who qualifies as a major candidate and when such protection should commence under the authority of Title 18, United States Code, Section 3056. This determination is made in consultation with an advisory committee comprised of the following individuals:

Speaker of the House
House Minority Whip
Senate Majority Leader
Senate Minority Leader
One additional member chosen by the committee

Thanks for posting this. It clarifies things quite a bit. The damage radius is huge. It’s an interesting comparison to images of the Texas City explosion. If anything this appears to be worse. Those apartments are closer than the demolished cars. Either the units were vacant or there are thousands of casualties.

Personally, I strongly hope those apartments were vacant, because like you said, if not, the casualty count is going to be very high.

That’s not an issue for Trump, who could afford it.

Can he? Really.

The reason I ask, the other night I heard a guy that knows Trump and worked with him on a book project said he understood that if Trump had to get some bucks up today for a large project, he might be able to gather up 3/4 of a million or so in ready cash.

It sounds like Trump’s worth is really tied in to buildings, projects, and other “stuff” and while all worth a lot of money, is it what that stuff is valued at not what he could actually get if he sold everything?

I’m not saying he isn’t rich, just that it has not been clear as to how rich he really is. And, we all seem to take for granted that he can buy his way into anything, afford everything, etc. when he might not have the ready cash to do all everyone seems to think he can do.

And, isn’t he now asking for donations? I thought I saw something where he is looking to build a war chest and looking for donations.

I guess all these suppositions and questions are a normal part pf a character like TRUMP® when he talks so much trash in such a short time.

Who really is Donald Trump. I don’t think we really know.

I don’t think you have to be black to respect, admire, and study the techniques of MLK. I don’t ever hear people insulting non-Chinese people who study the techniques of Sun-Tzu. You don’t have to be asian to appreciate Gandhi. MLK undoubtedly was filled with rage but what made him truly special is that he didn’t give in to it. His tactics were incredibly impressive and courageous in a far more difficult time. It is far easier to resort to violence and abusive tactics than it is to put peacefull pressure.

Absolutely. Pretty much every person has a loved one die from cancer. Cancer doesn’t care who you voted for or what you believe. Here’s the thing, “MLK wouldn’t have” is an established meme by now. Mostly used by either clueless or not so good folks. I’m NOT implying you’re one of those, it’s a statistical thing and there will always be exceptions. But it did raise a small red flag. Some of the other small things you said also did (spec. about LGF). I guess some folks noticed it too.

I did think some of the responses to you were out of bounds.

That said, it can be a tough room. If you will always bear a grudge about that, well, no constructive conversation will happen in the future. So don’t sulk about that, brush that off and move on ;)

Rescuers now are trying to remove all the 700 tons of sodium cyanide, which is reported to be stored in the warehouse where the blasts happened in Tianjin. 15% hydrogen peroxide had been prepared, according to The Beijing News.

These 700 tons of deadly toxics are stored in wooden boxes or iron barrels, 50 kilograms per unit, in the containers.

Sodium cyanide has now been detected in the sewage and leakage has been confirmed, according to The Beijing News.

Police: Man injures seven officers during fracas

A man was in court Tuesday after an alleged overnight brawl with police.

Officials said the assault started on the street and continued later as the man was booked at the station.

Seven officers were reportedly injured. Two were hospitalized and are expected to recover.

“The defendant rolled down the window and said ‘I know why you stopped me.’ The defendant then made reference to the events in Ferguson, Missouri,” according to the criminal complaint.

Joseph Parker, 34, in a wild rant, threatened to kill police, then pounced, police said. He punched 57-year-old Lt. Jeremian Goodwin, knocking him out.

I’ll check that out. By the way…I don’t really want to relive the JAH experience. I made my statements then based on what I knew at that time. I was just making light of your “tough room” comment. Live and learn.

Back later…got stuff to do. I’m trying to watch some tutorials and need to concentrate on some of the steps.

Large volumes of cyanide are used in metal plating and gold refining. The production end of our munitions installation used it by the hundreds of pounds, stored dry in 55 gallon drums.

Well the thing is we know for a fact that he defended Bayard Rustin when many in the movement wanted to get rid of him because he was gay and a socialist. I am normally loathe to attribute modern values to historical figures but the Rustin example and his widow and children’s support of the LGBT community leads me to believe that he would have supported the gay community.

Look, I appreciate that you have the guts to come back and try again. I haven’t yelled at you or called you any names. But you are being condescending and an embarrassment to white liberals. Do you really not see the difference between black activists policing their own movement and some clueless white kid telling black people how to behave so he isn’t discomfited by them?

And you are clueless. All civil rights movements that go anywhere have a civil, sensible branch and a scary, loud, often violent branch. MLK seemed sensible and worth dealing with because the Black Panthers and Malcolm X were around to remind people what scary looked like. Same with gay rights. Same with woman suffrage. Same with workers rights. Polite negotiation only works when there is a reminder that ignoring the issue will have nasty, scary consequences.

Please do some reading and thinking. You can figure this stuff out and be smarter. Right now you are part of the problem.

Oh no doubt. Sorry if I implied otherwise. We definitely do need to something about how the mentally ill are treated both by society and police departments. Whenever there’s a mass shooting, the first societal instinct is to assume mental illness and we think mass violence= mental illness and we ignore that people with mental illnesses are far more likely to be the victims of crime than commit it.

One reason pancreatic cancer is so bad is that the pancreas is completely surrounded by all your other internal organs. In addition to making surgery extraordinarily difficult, that makes it easy for it to spread to all those other organs. The liver is the most common.

“all lives matters” bs is noise. But as we dismiss it as noise, it doesn’t mean that we should ignore other issues that affect the shootings that might go beyond race.

Case in point: the shooting of Gilbert Collar.

When a black officer shoots an unarmed (in fact, naked) white teen and can’t get indicted for it in Alabama, of all places, this should indicate you that the issue is multifocused, for a lack of a better word. Yes, often it’s about being black. But it’s also often about being mentally incapacitated. It’s about the police not being willing to deescalate the situation, whether for reasons of racism or lack of professionalism. Shoot first, ask questions later.

I’d have to say so. I “like” and note I am using that term very very loosely here him more than Bush, Rubio, or Walker, three others who are portrayed as moderates.

re: #445 Csarneson

Feel free to disagree with me but it is my opinion that the violent and scary branch of these movements actually does damage to their cause. In the civil rights movement that damage was overcome by the peaceful and civil side of it. It is entirely possible that our country would be in a better place today had the violent side of the Civil Rights movement not existed. In my opinion it’s safe to say that had the MLK side of the movement not existed, race relations would be far worse today.

In my opinion (and that of historians and social science researchers), without the more radical end of the movement, NONE of the changes in civil rights would have happened.

IOW, your opinion is not supported and is more wishful thinking than anything else. Without the wide array of options, the “moderate” path of a King is simply not seen as a viable option. Change is almost ALWAYS accompanied by potential of violence.

I think he’s well meaning enough after getting a feel for his point of view but I think a lot of this is frankly formed by being in the situation we are today where someone like MLK is a revered figure whose birthday we celebrate every January. A lot of the people like Gandhi, MLK, and others we generally revere now were attacked for the same reason why groups like BLM are now.

Jimmy Carter, a Navy Vet and a former XO of a Nuclear submarine, defined what it meant to be an actual Christian President. He actually cared about people and our well-being.

And I have noticed that when Democrats have power TeaPublicans resent any gov’t spending more elaborate than windowless cinder-block buildings, for instance, in the name of frugality.

Yet when Mr Carter suggested a warm sweater was one small, reasonable response to the energy crisis the same Tea Party types made fun of him.

There are two interconnected issues: real-political understanding of how the Overton window works in real life; and actual embracing of the forces that are dragging that Overton window.

You can accept that the presence of the Soviet Union had a positive influence on some things elsewhere, incl. the US (ignoring the red scare/McCarthyism for a second). Like, some argue, the Soviets launching the Sputnik was a blow to creationism in the US schools. Or that the Soviet (pretty faux) focus on the race issues might have given an impetus for the US to be slightly more progressive in that area so as not the be the “bad guy” in comparison with the Soviets.

You can accept that while also accepting that USSR was an evil totalitarian state. Gray areas. Nuance works like that.

I posted this a few years back, about how the implied threat of revolution is a real driver of change.

Edit (might as well include the whole post)

(Boiling point)

Wake up, Randian assholes.

It is not entirely fuzzy headed altruism that drives these programs.

Today, this society has the benefit of millions of trained and educated people who would be illiterate if libertarian extremists and their predecessors had prevailed in the education funding debate. There are doctors, lawyers, and distinguished scientists whose early brain development would have been stunted without publicly funded food “giveways.” You wonder why academics hate your guts? Many of them KNOW they would have starved as children if your ilk had gotten its way.
Those who were privileged as children know their best students wouldn’t have made it to the fifth grade, let alone college, without these “giveways, this “theft” from pockets of “hard-working” folk like you morons.

Communists did not overthrow the Russian Empire and the Chinese Republic because the peasants wanted a free ride or thought goatees were cool. The peasants joined the Reds because they could see people starving in the streets, good, smart people, while inbred fatcats waltzed away the wealth that was their alleged birthright.
I hear racists bitch about the fat minority women who buy mountains of groceries with WIC cards at the local store. Good, maybe they are too fat and their kids are too busy doing homework to run me through with a pitchfork when they see me in my Rolls-Royce. I pay a LOT in taxes, goddammit, more than most Randian fantasists, and I would rather be dead than see this bill reduced at the expense of letting children grow up hungry and stunted, fodder for crazed revolutionaries.

“It can’t happen here.” That’s because we didn’t let it happen. A lot of people seem hellbent on changing that.

I think you are taking one (or a few) incidents and trying to generalize them to a widespread viewpoint. The other night, we were discussing the Stonewall Riots (which you said you had never heard of—but then, later quickly discounted their importance) and some of the SNCC tactics during the civil rights era. At the time, someone asked if you were familiar with Act Up. Don’t recall a response, so here, for your reading enjoyment, Charles P. Pierce on Act Up. (btw—Pierce was not a fan of the Seattle disruption, but explains, I think, rather well the remarkable success achieved by the guerrilla movement called ACT UP.

Sorry but that is bullshit. I never described everyone as violent nor did I imply it. I certainly do not believe that the entire movement is violent. I simply stated that the Seattle women who were being described as leaders of the group were not doing much to discourage that extreme side of the movement. While I don’t know a lot about Deray he seems significantly better.

As for my new account, Charles for quite a while didn’t allow just anybody to join at any time. I saw him occasionally post that he would open it up for a weekend or so but frankly I wasnt that interested. Adding a bunch of “Ha, Ha” comments when he he points out the hypocrisy of Hoft of Chuck isn’t a lot of fun for me. I certainly enjoy reading some of those but had no desire to post additional “me too’s”. This topic was the pretty rare situation where I felt like my view was underrepresented in the discussion and so I registered. Obviously looking at some of the recent articles coming out from liberal people like Chait, I am not completely alone.

Ahem.

Back in the day, MLK was the scary radical, and his detractors claimed that his words would lead to violence.

The whole “this peaceful movement was different, and therefore worked” thing is hindsight and myth-making.

And I’m not even going to get into Quit India and Gandhi. So much complicated shit going on there. Everybody remembers holy man Gandhi at the end of his life, and forgets crafty bastard Gandhi who made tactical decisions to screw the British Empire using its own justification system.

That’s what I’ve been trying to say. I’ll give Csarn credit for coming back after the first night but I do think with all respect to him that he’s been romanticizing the past Civil Rights movements that we look on now with fond eyes because of their success and ignore how they were viewed at the time. I think J Edgar Hoover called MLK the most dangerous man in America.

MLK is beloved now but if you had asked many whites in 1965, I bet many would say the same thing that many are saying about BLM today. And I will add that a lot of these activists are young people. I don’t think they deserve to be condescended to and talked down to and told “Ya know MLK wouldn’t like that”. I am sorry but I remain having a big problem with people who by their own admission aren’t form the demo group telling people in a demographic group that one of their group’s biggest heroes wouldn’t support what they’d do. It reeks of “I know what’s best for you.”

Factor in the strange embedding of “Sept. 23, 2015,” into dozens of Hollywood movies and music videos dating back to the 1980s, and you have the recipe for a fast-growing Internet conspiracy theory with questions frequently asked about possible Illuminati influence. Then you have the scheduled arrival of Pope Francis at the White House on Sept. 23 and a first-ever address to a joint session of Congress the next day. Francis is the 266th pope who will be meeting with President Obama on the 266th day of the year, leading one Internet preacher to wonder if “something is being birthed” on that day, since 266 days is the typical human gestation period from conception to birth.

This is fabulous stuff.

What lazy thinking. It is unfamiliar with history and context and it makes sloppy comparisons. Calling the Seattle incident extreme is lazy. It is nothing to REAL extreme options and REAL radical thought.

And don’t cite other lazy thinkers like Chait, who’s simply out of his depth when talking about race and modern society. They have a narrow, ethnocentric view of the world that has no conception of how other parts of society live or could possibly think differently as themselves.

They have no clue about people who could think as well as they do, but not the same as they do.

I wonder how The X-Files miniseries is going to explain why the aliens didn’t invade in 2012 like they were suppose to.

They are already here:

and I was called condescending?

I’m well aware that history is muddy and there is little black and white in this world. You won’t ever hear me agree with “the ends justified the means” arguments though. It’s that kind of thinking that creates situations where abortion doctors are murdered. I feel like a stale old white guy for saying this but I think there is a right way and a wrong way of making change in this world. I’m not telling anybody to shut up or not voice their opinion but I certainly think strategy matters if you want to be successful. Yelling and name-calling would be near the bottom of my recommended strategies.

Maybe like how X-Men, Days of the Future Passed explained how Dr. X, whom Jean Grey shredded, was still around, and how Magneto managed to regain the powers he’d lost permanently.

Would Dana say that to Barbara Bush? Every Republican first lady except Nancy Reagan after Roe has been pro-choice.

some friendly advice:

lose the defensiveness and self justification, write shorter responses, and accept gracefully that people may call you an idiot from time to time

Well, Magneto’s powers were coming back at the very end of X-Men: The Last Stand when he makes the chest pieces move while in his prison.

Did you ever dial 555-1212 to see who answers?

Back in the old days (rotary phone) that use to be information. Is it still?

Now it’s the throw-away non-number used in TV dramas by convention.

Buddy of mine is down there right now for a two week trip & ski clinic. I’m hoping it changes him…he’s an instructor and spends all of his time on groomers.

Your buddy is going to come back and tell you he found God or some such shit. Even Chris Davenport is saying it’s the best fucking ever skiing down there right now.
