Ben Carson Slammed Planned Parenthood for Fetal Tissue Donation, but Did Research on Aborted Fetal Tissue Himself

Just some more GOP hypocrisy
Politics • Views: 64,058

Like all the Republican candidates (and in fact, nearly all Republican politicians), young Earth creationist Dr. Ben Carson advocates defunding Planned Parenthood. He told Fox News’s Megyn Kelly recently that medical research can be conducted without the use of fetal tissue, saying the Planned Parenthood “sting” videos make him question “how far we have drifted in terms of our humanity.”

But as OB/GYN physician Dr. Jen Gunter points out at her blog, in 1992 Dr. Ben Carson himself, along with three other authors, published a study on research conducted using 17-week old fetal tissue.

Carson also said, “At 17 weeks, you’ve got a nice little nose and little fingers and hands and the heart’s beating. It can respond to environmental stimulus. How can you believe that that’s just a[n] irrelevant mass of cells? That’s what they want you to believe, when in fact it is a human being.”

Dr. Carson, like everyone, is entitled to an opinion no matter how wrong, What he says doesn’t change the fact that fetal tissue plays a vital role in medical research. For example it is being used to develop a vaccine against Ebola. Many researchers depend on fetal tissue to understand and hopefully develop treatment for a myriad of conditions from blindness to HIV. Without fetal tissue neurosciences research, something essential for the development of neurosurgical techniques, would be far less developed. Dr. Carson should be intimately aware of this fact.

While opining on the uselessness of fetal tissue research to Megyn Kelly Dr. Carson neglected to mention his own paper Colloid Cysts of the Third Ventricle: Immunohistochemical evidence for nonneuropithelial differentiation published in Hum Pathol 23:811-816 in 1992. The materials and methods describe using “human choroid plexus ependyma and nasal mucosa from two fetuses aborted in the ninth and 17th week of gestation.”

UPDATE at 8/13/15 10:48:48 am by Charles Johnson

Dr. Carson offers the following excuse/explanation/incoherent justification to the Washington Post:

In an interview with the Washington Post, Carson called the revelation “desperate,” and ignorant of the way medical research was carried out.

“You have to look at the intent,” Carson said before beginning a campaign swing through New Hampshire. “To willfully ignore evidence that you have for some ideological reason is wrong. If you’re killing babies and taking the tissue, that’s a very different thing than taking a dead specimen and keeping a record of it.”

Cmon, this was 1992, which was before Margaret Sanger founded PP to sell all the black baby body parts.

I don’t have any respect for Carson honestly. This is a man who visits the Holocaust museum and instead of realizing “Hey maybe I went too far by comparing present America to Nazi Germany” says the visit affirmed that belief. This is a guy who continues to say that ACA- a legislation that has gotten millions of Americans who were previously uninsured insured the worst thing since slavery. He may be a world renowed neurosurgeon but he’s a complete asshole as a person.

I heard Ben Carson on the local radio yesterday. He was touring NYC. The man has about as much warmth and personality as Romney. It is still a mystery to me how he is 12% in some polls. Also he couldn’t answer any questions, he just kept referring to his principles. Almost put me to sleep.

As a liberal Democrat I want to see the race go on and on, but I will smile when he drops out.

And apply it to:

I think to the RWNJs, they love the idea of a black guy like Carson shitting on Obama and the Democrats. I really can’t think of any other explanation since he’s not qualified at all for the job. He has never run for any office before. I mean with Carly Fiorina and Herman Cain, you could at least say they had ran for office and lost before. Ben’s just using the 15 minutes of fame he got for trashing ACA and using it as a Presidential run and it seems to have worked.

29
lawhawk  Aug 13, 2015 • 10:54:11am

Research paper was published in 1992. That’s before Congress enacted specific provisions relating to fetal tissue donations.

You could say that Carson’s research in part supported the validity of fetal tissue research, giving Congress the reason to specifically protect/legalize the donation of fetal tissue, and to prescribe rules for donations and reimbursement for costs.

Look at the intent? He did the research on fetal tissue. No one made him do that. He thought it was relevant and important enough to do, and wasn’t particularly troubled by it. His name is on the paper.

He could have done research on anything his heart desired. He chose fetal tissue.

Of course, there’s good reason for that. Fetal tissue is important to help with the understanding of development of tissues, structures, and diseases/ailments, along with finding cures/treatments. That’s why he did the research. That’s why Congress enacted a specific protection for fetal tissue donations.

“look at the intent” means he wants us to go beyond the evidence, be it previously published research papers in peer reviewed journals and just believe whatever he says.

Freepers are taking this news story exactly like you’d expect:

Alinsky 101: Isolate, demonize, destroy. Can Carson fight back like Trump? Stay tuned.

And so it begins..

Oh no he di’int!

Ben Carson seems like a decent guy I don’t believe any of their attacks.

In 92 Dr. Carson was still a liberal.

He has come over from the Dark Side.

There’s a big difference between using fetal tissue from a spontaneous loss of pregnancy, or a premie that didn’t make it, etc., than making pre-abortion ‘deals’ to sell fetal tissue from abortion. I don’t know what Carson did, but this is more attempts at obfuscation by the left. They will say anything to retain power, and have sold many lies and half-truths to the American public over the years.

I see the Dirty Tricks squads are already out. It’s going to get ugly until things get sorted out.

Where does it say Carson used aborted baby parts for research? All it says is he did fetal tissue research. For all we know, these were babies who died prematurely of natural causes who’s mothers donated their bodies to science.

The Establishment is grasping for straws.
They have no idea of the magnitude of the RAGING FURY of decent Americans!

OT, in addition to the Kentucky county clerk defying a US District Court judge by continuing to refuse to issue a marriage license to a same sex couple, infamous Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore and his Court may yet engage in one more act of defiance. After Obergefell was decided, the Court invited briefs on the impact of the Supreme Court decision, and at least one urged them to defy the Supreme Court. One reason was that the Supreme Court’s decision was “illegitimate” due to Ginsburg and Kagan, who had both married same sex couples, not recusing themselves.

re: #81 aagcobb

OT, in addition to the Kentucky county clerk defying a US District Court judge by continuing to refuse to issue a marriage license to a same sex couple, infamous Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore and his Court may yet engage in one more act of defiance. After Obergefell was decided, the Court invited briefs on the impact of the Supreme Court decision, and at least one urged them to defy the Supreme Court. One reason was that the Supreme Court’s decision was “illegitimate” due to Ginsburg and Kagan, who had both married same sex couples, not recusing themselves.

By that logic, you could argue that the four dissenters should have recused themselves since they’re all practicing members of a denomination that opposes SSM. This is just like the claim that Judge Walker(for those who forgot, he’s the judge that overturned Prop 8 and later came out as gay) shouldn’t have ruled on the case because of that even though you know these people would be just fine with a Southern Baptist and card carrying AFA member as a judge in a case.

The BBC has changed its map of the Tianjin blast. It seems the original reported location was wrong.
BBC Report bbc.com

I found the new location using Google Maps. It’s just south of the eight rectangular buildings at top right in the screen cap below. Note that there is a subway line running under that area, with a station right next to the blast zone.

This location is NNW of the one the BBC has previously identified.

LUTHER, Okla. - A former city councilman in Luther, who is accused of using inmates to steal copper wire, is in trouble with the law again…

Sheriff John Whetsel says Smith told three DOC inmates to strip the copper and paid them each $40.

Investigators say Smith sold the copper to a recycling plant for just under $160, meaning he only took home a little more than $30 after paying the inmates.

The damage estimate on the taxpayer’s dime is about $31,000.

Now, Smith is facing charges for attempting to prevent a witness from giving testimony, according to court records.

i remember specifically wishing him the best. I think it was heart trouble IIRC. Something I can relate to given my own condition. Debbie, it was mentioned downstairs lost her father to pancreatic cancer. One would think that because of experiencing that, she could be empathetic to Carter’s wife, children, and grandchildren and not be a jerk. She doesn’t even have to wish him well if she doesn’t want to but she really showed her low class by doing that and then even more by acting like HOW DARE YOU when she got called out on it. I don’t like the c-word being used but what the hell did Debbie expect to happen when she said something like that. She knew she was going to get a nasty reaction. So many people out there want to say nasty shit about people and not have to deal with push back. They cry CENSORSHIP but it’s other people expressing their free speech in return.

I seem to recall hearing about that back when people were suing Zuckerberg because they’d given him the original idea for “a web page with really cool stuff on it that people would want to see.”

I actually have had a facebook account since the year it came out. It really is remarkable how the site has changed dramatically since then. Back then it was college kids only, now I see grandparents on there. A lot of people hate on it but I appreciate FB since it was really the first step in how me and one of my cousins who is much older than I am really first got in touch and were able to get to know each other better. She introduced me to the Pogues.

We often tell ourselves being a cat would make for a lovely life, what with the naps and the diminished financial responsibility, but in fact the world of a cat is a cold, brutal one. I sneezed in a record shop yesterday and a stranger a few feet from me said “Bless you!” and I said “Thanks” and she said “That’s ok.” It was really nice and could easily have gone on for much longer, if both of us had had nowhere else pressing to be. Compare this to earlier today, when one of my cats sneezed, and my other cat was like, “Do that again and I’ll cut you.” […]

Ben Carson’s campaign faces turmoil after staff exits and super PAC chaos

The presidential bid of Ben Carson, a tea party star who has catapulted into the top tier of Republican contenders, has been rocked by turmoil with the departures of four senior campaign officials and widespread disarray among his allied super PACs.

Carson’s associates described a political network in tumult in interviews Friday, saying the retired neurosurgeon’s campaign chairman, national finance chairman, deputy campaign manager and general counsel have all resigned since Carson formally launched his bid last month in Detroit. They have not been replaced, campaign officials said.

The moves gutted the core of Carson’s apparatus and left the 63-year-old first-time candidate with only a handful of experienced aides at his side as he navigates the fluid, crowded and high-stakes contest for the Republican nomination.

So apparently, Anne Rice is having a fit of “Political Correctness” causing “Censorship.”

The background.

As if everyone wasn’t shocked enough already, For Such a Time was shortlisted for two RITAs, the Romance Writers of America’s Oscars equivalent, in the Best First Book and Best Inspirational Romance categories.

One review has received particular attention, with the Smart B**ches Trashy Books critic writing that it would take a lot to convince her that the relationship at the heart of the novel is “a love story, rather than a story about heinous disparities in power and something like Stockholm Syndrome”.

The website’s Sarah Wendell backed her up and wrote a letter of complaint to the RWA’s board of directors, arguing that “the stereotypes, the language and the attempt at redeeming an SS officer as a hero belittle and demean the atrocities of the Holocaust”.

The summary of the book in question:

A controversial Christian romance novel about a Nazi who falls in love with a Jewish concentration camp prisoner has sparked outrage after being shortlisted for two major awards.

Kate Breslin’s For Such a Time follows the officer’s affair with a “blonde and blue-eyed Jewess” and has been fuelling fierce debate about cultural appropriation in literature.

The story is basically a Holocaust-based retelling of the Bible’s Book of Esther, in which young girl Hadassah changes her name to Esther to become Queen of Persia and beg her husband to prevent a genocide against her people.

Breslin’s 2014 book has Hadassah become Stella, who works for SS-Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt in his office after he saves her from a firing squad. The two fall head over heels and she converts to Christianity after finding strength reading about Christ’s sacrifice. So yes, divisive is an understatement.

My reaction to the book summary:

For those who haven’t had their brain boil, a Christian Reviewers thoughts are here.

Getting rid of Saddam was good - he was a democidal dictator who murdered his opponents with abandon. But the mess that was left in his wake was not worth it. We did not have a plan to deal with it, and we didn’t adjust quickly enough to address the insurrection that quickly followed.

Right. And Jeb knows better than that.

MrBWS and I were watching something on the tv last weekend and one of the characters had an accent that I said sounded sort of Louisiana, but a lot of Alabama too.

Turns out the character was an Alabama guy who moved to Louisiana many years earlier.

Excellent work on the part of the actor to nail that accent, unless IRL he was also an Alabama guy who had moved to Louisiana years earlier.

Accents are fun. Spending time in Ireland has allowed me to get a feel for the various Irish accents. The guy who taught the irish history class I took was an Ulsterman while the Irish lit class was taught by an American who had lived in Ireland for many years so he sort of have a Frank McCourt hybrid Irish/American accent- the Midatlantic accent of Irish accents.my grandfather even though he left Western Pa in his mid 20’s never lost that accent. My grandmother still has it but it’s not as strong as his was, she thinks it’s because he worked so many years with fellow Western Pa transplants and she worked with people from all over the place.

Search and rescue is ongoing. Firefighters were on the scene when the explosions started. Two are still missing. Many of the people injured are still (understandably) confused. Authorities may know how many are reported missing but would wait until the devastation is searched. One article stated China’s President has called for an all out effort to contain the number of casualties. I was amazed that the port area is still open and working but the Rui Hai Logistics warehouse is inland by a few blocks from the container port area.

Not a chance. It may be 100 times that. This is larger than the Texas City explosion of 1947, based on a rough comparison of damage radii. This comparison is a little easier than it might otherwise be because there were large parking lots and a large multi-story building near the center of the Texas City explosion too.
This is the official 1947 state report on the Texas City disaster. It includes a number of very useful photos. *GRAPHIC*

MOREHEAD, Ky. At least four same-sex couples were refused marriage licenses at the Rowan County Courthouse on Thursday in defiance of a federal court order that called on County Clerk Kim Davis to set aside her religious objections and provide the forms to all couples.

All four were turned away before noon, with deputy clerks saying that Davis is on vacation and had instructed them not to give out any licenses despite the injunction U.S. District Judge David Bunning issued against Davis on Wednesday.

snip

The Family Foundation also weighed in Thursday, arguing that Bunning’s decision ignored federal and state religious freedom laws, along with the First Amendment.

Spokesman Martin Cothran said in a statement that same-sex couples are now considered a privileged class and that couples in Rowan County have multiple alternatives to obtain a license.

“But there is only one way for Kim Davis to exercise her religious freedom,” he said. “This is just one more case where people in a privileged cultural position now receive extra credit when they go before a judge, and part of that extra credit involves getting to rewrite the law.”

She’s on vacation….

Perhaps the spookiest and most heartbreaking photo from the Texas City explosion:

This shows Texas City firefighters and crewmen from the SS Grandcamp fighting the fire at dockside. It was taken 2-3 minutes before the explosion. All 28 firemen at the scene and all 52 of the Grandcamp’s crew died in the explosion. The photographer was apparently the last person to leave the dock alive, and barely escaped death at that. The nearest survivor was behind a concrete pillar in the warehouse at the right of the photo, just 70 feet from the epicenter. The concussion destroyed 2 light planes that were circling the area, one of them at 3000 feet.

Somebody once described the difference to me as “Irish is a lilt, Scottish is a burr”.

I love accents, too. When I was working inbound phone shops in a previous lifetime, I had actually gotten to the point where I could identify at least half a dozen Southern regional accents (probably more, but that was a LONG time ago).

My favorite accent story: as I have mentioned from time to time, I lived in West Berlin for most of 1984. Berlin was technically a divided city at the time, split into the U.S., U.K., French and Soviet sectors — so it was not at all uncommon to find Irish pubs around the city. The most prominent one was at the Europa Center, and they had a house Irish band that played quite regularly, led by a fellow named Paddy. First time I saw them, they finished a tune and Paddy thanked the crowd and introduced the next tune in his lovely, lilting accent — then proceeded to repeat the intro in German. I damned near fell off my barstool laughing — somehow, German with an Irish accent hit a sweet spot on my funnybone. A truly amusing sound….

I wonder what on earth he’s thinking. He must have a lot of money because he tried this last time and it failed miserably. I don’t even remember anything specific he offered or did. Now the same could be said about Fred Thompson who so many conservatives in 2008 told me that I should be “scared” of but the only thing Fred did was to help me get some shut eye.

Yeah, I don’t remember much he said in 2012, or when he served as the GOP sacrificial lamb against Mark Warner in 2008.

I posted on a site that had a good mix of libs and cons in 2008 and a lot of the diehard cons loved them some Fred. I also commuted to community college via the bus at that time and the bus driver always had Rush on that winter and man Rush loved Thompson. Said he would destroy McCain. Guy didn’t even win one primary. I think he may have had one where he got in second but outside of that, ole Fred was about as inspiring to the Republican base as a baloney sandwich.

But his platform’s ‘reverse mortgage’ plank is really good.

Yeah I don’t know why he subjects himself to this. He’s never been particularly charismatic. He rode into the governor’s mansion off of Governor Allen’s coattails. In today’s Virginia, he wouldn’t have gotten elected. I know literally nothing about his policy beliefs outside that his ads in ‘97 were all about repealing the car tax.

Now that didn’t surprise me at all. Rudy was always going to have an uphill battle being a pro-choice and pro-gun control Republican. Though I have to admit, I did think he would do better in a state like uh New Hampshire. Rudy’s the last pro-choice person that has run for President as a Republican that I know of.

I believe Rudy’s “strategy” was to not worry about any primaries until Florida—where he then lost spectacularly, coming in a distant third.

Trump is now Too Big To Fail

I suspect, but not strongly enough to call it a prediction, that the GOP electorate will toy with the idea of Trump for quite some time, but will eventually go with someone less obviously insane. In 2012, after all, the polls favored Michelle Bachmann at one point.

I don’t remember that. I just remember that he was the guy for all the constitutional literalists I knew at the time. They all hated Huckabee I suspect for the same reason that CCJ does in that they saw him as a “RINO” “liberal” since Huckabee in 2008 had a fake compassionate side.

Yeah she talked about it as if she played the sport herself. I mean don’t get me wrong, I appreciate mothers being involved in their children’s sports, my mom was and still is especially involved with first my baseball and now my brother’s but she talked about hockey moms as if they were these rugged individuals. It certainly did not make her a bad ass. I never really attacked her qualifications until she made it clear that intellectually she wasn’t qualified. She loves to bitch about how Couric ambushed her but asking a presidential or in her case vice presidential candidate what kind of magazines they like to read to keep informed is a legitimate question as is asking them about important Supreme Court cases (as I recall, she only named Roe.) Plus, she was just nasty and still is. I really resented her visiting my state which I doubt she had ever visited before and telling that crowd how glad she was to be in real Virginia. This a couple years after George Allen called that Indian-American and by the way lifelong Virginian kid a “macaca”, I actually know some people who know him. Thankfully Biden was on the trail here not long after and pretty much echoed Obama’s message of unity and called out that shit.

No doubt. But I was talking about how they brought up how Alaska has an unique relationship to your nation having been a former Russian colony (only state that was though there were Russian settlements in modern Northern California I believe) but it’s different than that of a state that has a land border with a nation. Palin’s experience or there lack of wouldn’t have been a big issue IMO if she hadn’t shown herself to be ignorant.

That’s the Lt Governor of New Jersey isn’t it? Of course, they’re going to say that. Are people this intentionally dense? When we say “Black Lives Matter”, we’re talking about the people who kill black people being held accountable the same way people who kill white people are. If a black guy kills a white cop, yeah I want him brought to justice the same way I wanted the white officers who killed Eric Garner brought to justice. How fucking hard is that?

A good point and we show that cops lives matter by prosecuting cop killers and punishing them more harshly than if the people who had been killed had been civilians. It is beyond frustrating that some people and in this case the Lt Governor of New Jersey just doesn’t get it or frankly want to. Cops who have killed unarmed blacks aren’t even indicted often than not. Thanks Beach Dem. Seeing that it’s Gavin Newsome, former mayor of SF’s ex.

So don’t tell me All Lives Matter or worse White or Blue Lives Matter when it was the exception and not the norm to charge the cops that killed Freddie Gray with a crime. You attack a cop or kill one in this country and the evidence is there, a grand jury will indict you and furthermore if convicted, you have a much greater chance of landing on death row than if you had killed your neighbor.

It’s a stupid analogy. The products used to make a cake for a gay couple are no different than what a straight couple would use. It’s quite different than a kosher or halal butcher or baker who specifically uses different ingredients. Somehow, I doubt they would be okay with a gay owned business turning down a customer wearing a cross.

Dr. Jen Gunter
Ben Carson has still not answered the right questions about his fetal tissue research

The Washington Post interviewed Dr. Ben Carson about my post from yesterday that disclosed his use of fetal tissue in research.

Defending his work he told David Weigel,

“If you’re killing babies and taking the tissue, that’s a very different thing than taking a dead specimen and keeping a record of it.”

But the tissue he used was from an abortion. That is what the Materials section says. It doesn’t say when but it says what. That abortion might have happened 10 years before and it is true the tissue could have been retrieved from a tissue bank and so not obtained for his specific study, but how exactly does Dr. Carson think it got into the tissue bank in the first place? His response makes no sense at all.

Like most Republican “ideas”, this has been tried and has failed. GW Bush tax cuts being the most recent of several instances.

I hope at least the It remake will be good.

I find it hard to believe someone can outshine/out-creep Tim Curry as Pennywise in the original…

I think you misread her comment. I suspect she was arguing for smaller government by wanting revenues to go down.

The conservative smaller government pipe dream? Fine.

The spending cuts can come before the tax cuts. Tax cuts first will just pile on the debt.

I’d consider that scenario but only if it started with cutting the pentagon budget by about a third to a half. Even then I suspect the damage done economically by those spending sudden cuts would kill any benefit of tax cuts.

Iowa Republicans think Trump and Fiorina would be the bestest presidents ever for business! (I guess if you’re looking for offshoring jobs, destroying value and bankruptcies galore, that would be about right.)

They have their farm subsidies, so no skin in the game.

When a Republican tells me that they want to shrink the government I take it to mean that they want to destroy the social safety net, maintain our hallucinatory level of defense spending, and devote everything else to ensuring that America’s great private fortunes remain undisturbed.

I just like the whole “run the government like a business” line that accompanies candidates like her, Romney and Trump. No business person anywhere, ever, in the entirety of recorded history has espoused reduced revenue as a goal. The famous, if trite, saying in financial circles is “if you’re not growing you’re dying.” Everyone in business wants their company to succeed, and like it or not in a capitalist system we measure success by growth, or at least increased profitability. In other words, increased net revenue.

Republicans, in their infinite capacity for cognitive dissonance think that running the government like a business is the same as running it into the ground.

I think defense needs big cuts, and substantial increases will be needed on the non-defense side just to cover existing obligations (mainly Medicare).

I’m vehemently opposed to the whole concept of running the government like a business, based mainly on what that implies for voting. In a corporation, shares (i.e., $$$) vote. The idea of extending this voting model to government is revolting, and is clearly a high priority with the GOP (Citizens United etc.).

When have Republicans EVER talked about ‘revenue neutral tax reform’? They go out of their way to tell you they don’t think you should have to ‘pay for’ tax cuts.

Spending cuts take real, gutsy leadership and to have them lead addresses the public debt as well (ignoring any unintended consequences; what could go wrong?).

Then she could turn to the easy and popular tax cuts that Republicans can never get enough of…. after she’s demonstrated fiscal prudence and mature leadership.

It always appalls me to see a doctor, above all, become such an anti-science revanchist. Medicine, for me, is the apogee of the Renaissance. Yes, sometimes it gets poisoned by money-hunger, and quackery is always a temptation— for some— because the money is easy and you can promise miracles and then disappear.

But Carson is, to all evidence, a competent scientist. What is the reason he went off in this direction?
