Sanity prevails in Idaho. Though to be honest, Butch “the gay” Otter is probably still stinging from the close to one million dollar legal bill incurred by the State’s unsuccessful bid to defend Idaho’s SSM law.

Idaho will not investigate Planned Parenthood over fetal tissue videos

In a letter to state lawmakers dated August 6, Otter, a Republican, writes, “I understand and share your concerns regarding recently released video of Planned Parenthood officials in other states. Their actions are shocking and deeply troubling.” However, “there is no evidence a crime has been committed,” Otter adds

He knows those videos are bogus and isn’t going to waste the States money on this nothing burger.

RINO OTTER. He still has one of the funniest political names out there. Still amazes me that Dick Armey thought he could make fun of Barney Frank’s name using a homophobic slur when the dude’s name is well Dick Armey.

The next time I run into one of these anti-abortion, anti-birth control, women make bad choices asshole men, I have decided to ask them three simple questions…

“So, in light of this, you’re a celibate virgin, right?”

“Oh, you’re not? Then you’re willing to be celibate until marriage, right?”

“Oh! You’re married? Then you only have sex for procreation, right?”

Answer:

“Good for you for holding true to your values!. I guess “Go fuck yourself” is appropriate in your case!”

or

“Wow. So, let me get this straight. You participate too? NO WAY! Do you have no self-discipline or self-control? You want all of the fun and no consequences! Oh, wait…just go fuck yourself.”

August has been a very long month.

“My President reduced the deficit by more than $100,000,000,000 over 10 years and all I got was this affordable health insurance with coverage for preexisting conditions, no rescission, and no copays for most preventive screenings” is too big to put on a T-shirt, I suppose.

He’d probably use the Mitt excuse that governors have to do different things than a president. Like how RomneyCare was what spawned the ACA, but that should be done by the states (governor) not the Feds.

Because the Federal Government requiring everyone to have coverage is totalitarian, but for the state to do it is just peachy.

I don’t understand why anyone would leak something like that, unless it’s intended to provoke exactly the reaction you’re feeling right now. I’m not at all surprised Baghdadi would do such a thing considering all the other atrocities committed by this group. I mean, that’s what war rape is, right? Showing your enemy that you can take their women and do as you please with them. Make them a proxy of sorts.

Also, isn’t it enough that her family had to suffer her loss, now they have to face this being publicized and relive it? As for Baghdadi et al, my policy has been & will continue to be not to Tweet anything to do with the knuckle-dragging thugs—they enjoy the attention far too much. I suspect they also enjoy the impotent rage they make Americans, especially men, feel when they hear of such things.

Again, who is leaking this info and why? Who benefits?

There would be political benefit in a mud slinging way. It fits in with Obama and Clinton foreign policy being attacked currently by the whole GOP contingent one way or another. So, that could be released by anyone, not even a politician, just for general political titillation.

Trump is an opportunist, not an ideologue. Thus on domestic policy he would not be nearly as bad as any of the other GOP candidates, if elected POTUS. The Jacobin-level ideological intensity of any real GOP POTUS would be worse than anything Trump would end up doing, even if we assume Trump would basically be incompetent and corrupt as POTUS.

The real problem with Trump as POTUS is in foreign policy, where his blustering could get us into a truly pointless World War III.

Like 9/11 angry. Gotta breath deep a few times.

How about the black woman who was raped in public by cops in Texas?

A Texas women says police held her down in a gas station parking lot, pulled off her pants and subjected her to an illegal and humiliating body cavity search in plain view of passing pedestrians and motorists.

Charnesia Corley, 21, said she was running an errand for her sick mother when a male Harris County sheriff’s deputy pulled her over near a Texaco station on June 21 and accused her of running a stop sign. The deputy said he smelled marijuana coming from the car, which in Texas is probable cause to search a vehicle.

After a fruitless look inside the car, the lawman summoned a female deputy and events spiraled out of control, Corley said.

“They sexually assaulted, raped me and molested me,” Corley told The Huffington Post on Monday.

I mean, I’m not trying to minimize what ISIS is doing or saying you shouldn’t be upset by this, but it isn’t exactly surprising either given their monstrous reputation. I guess I’m just more outraged by the near constant drumbeat of cops in this country abusing black women under the color of our own laws, and getting away with it. Because that’s something we nominally have control over, and should be able to end immediately without having to form a military coalition, yet for some reason we continue to tolerate it.

snopes.com

First of all, this image did not “mysteriously surface”: It has been on the web since at least 2008 when it was posted to several Russian-language internet forums along with messages equating homosexuality with fascism. The photograph has also been used in “Demotivational Posters” and in a meme mocking grammar Nazis. It wasn’t until April 2015 that Scott Walker’s name became attached to the photograph.

It should also be noted that the image originated on Russian websites. While it is not impossible for a college photo of Scott Walker to make its way overseas before hitting the American web, that circumstance is highly unlikely.

Furthermore, there is no evidence that the man pictured in the photo is Scott Walker other than his bearing a passing resemblance to the Wisconsin Governor:

Although this photo does show a man posing in lingerie on a Nazi rug, that man is likely not Scott Walker.

Yep, it’s fake, he doesn’t have flounder face. I can tell by the pixels and having seen many flounders in my time.

Kill them. Dealing with terrorism really does have two parts. Some terrorists just need to be killed. The other part of the deal is to address the root causes for terrorism that are under our control (e.g., our support of violently repressive regimes).

re: #69 goddamnedfrank

How about the black woman who was raped in public by cops in Texas?

I mean, I’m not trying to minimize what ISIS is doing or saying you shouldn’t be upset by this, but it isn’t exactly surprising either given their monstrous reputation. I guess I’m just more outraged by the near constant drumbeat of cops in this country abusing black women under the color of our own laws, and getting away with it. Because that’s something we nominally have control over, and should be able to end immediately without having to form a military coalition, yet for some reason we continue to tolerate it.

The other thing is, we’re already at war with ISIS, and that guy is already on the ‘Hellfire missile up the ass’ list. I don’t find myself hating him any more because of this because he’s ALREADY pretty much maxed that out. What I DO feel is really, really bad for her.

WRT anger at the too-frequent ill-treatment of black women by cops - You won’t find any threads on any Right or Left wing forums talking about what Kayla Meuller must have done to deserve it, or how she should have just complied and she’d be fine, or stupid Willy Wonka memes saying she should try not breaking the law. That’s the kind of shit that makes me want to spit tacks.

But ISIS? I’m all out of room on the hate spectrum for them. They’re already at 11.

Well fuck, a wildfire just kicked off a mile from my house.

Multiple brush fires were burning in the Simi Valley and Moorpark area on Friday afternoon, and some residents were being asked to shelter in place.

One blaze was in 500 block of Rustic Hills Drive, near homes in the Wood Ranch area Simi Valley, the Ventura County Fire Department stated on Twitter about 3:45 p.m.

Simi Valley police called the fire a “dangerous situation” for residents, and warned people to stay away. Residents were told to shelter in place.

Backfires set, the sky is filled with snorkel choppers ferrying back and forth from Lake Ward.

For there is a plot afoot in the Washington Post Conservative Club to purge Trump from the Republican Party before the primaries begin.

“A political party has a right to … secure its borders,” asserts the Post’s George Will, “a duty to exclude interlopers.” Will wants The Donald “excommunicated” and locked out of all GOP debates until he kneels and takes a loyalty oath to the nominee.

“Marginalizing Trump” carries no risk of “alienating a substantial Republican cohort,” Will assures us, for these “Trumpites” are neither Republicans nor conservatives. Better off without such trash.

The Post’s Michael Gerson says “establishment Republicans” must “make clear that [Trump] has moved beyond the boundaries of serious and civil discourse.” He loathes the Trumpites as much as Will.

See, now, that’s why I actually liked Bush’s initial response to 9/11. We didn’t go bomb a bunch of places the next day. We took a few days to make sure we knew what happened, and who did it. Then we went to the country sheltering them and told them to turn them over or face the consequences. Then we sent in the consequences. Resolute and inexorable, not wild screams for vengeance and killing everyone.

Then we went off the rails with the stupid belief that all you have to do is topple a dictator and Western Style Pluralistic Democracy springs up like mushrooms after a rain storm.

And, ferchrissakes, we knew better! We’d spent a lot of the 90s dealing with the aftermath of the collapse of Yugoslavia. It seems like the first thing an oppressed people think when no longer oppressed is “We never liked THOSE PEOPLE!!!”

Since you opened the door, I’ll chat about it a little….

Everyone there has tattoos. No problem, but your individuality is moot. As said before, we went to the Bernie rally before our dinner reservations.

The people I encountered were so friendly and nice. I’m kind of a chatty person & Portland’s people did not disappoint. I dropped into a hair salon just for the fuck of it and got a great cut & insight to where to go next. Had a pina colada at Trader Vic’s. (I have never seen/been to one, so it was a must) The waitress did not know Warren Zevon. We were distraught.

We were sitting at a really nice bar in the Pearl District & I could NOT stop staring at the tattoo (among many others) on this girls arm of a CHAIR. Seriously it was a cane chair all alone. I was staring because I was trying to find adjacent ink that signified the meaning. Couldn’t. We are still laughing at that.

Old maxim. Ignorance is curable. Stupidity can be fatal. I was stupid and paid the (small, this time) price for it.

Protip. If you need to drill/saw/whatever something. Secure it in a vise or clamp. Don’t hold the damn things in your hand. Bad things happen.

If you do enough work to justify the cost, this thing is very handy. You can find them on steep sale.

To me so far it’s about first, true or not? If true, I can dismiss the motives as irrelevant if only in terms of what if anything should be done differently in what I am starting to call the simmer war. Not a hot war, not a cold war. That’s a little cynical shorthand I guess.
What Pres. Obama and the coalition might to to exact a proper price for that atrocity. Now by proper I mean that in a literal proportional level headed sense.

If false, finding out the who and why gets very important of course.

I don’t want us in a major war again. The scary part is am I being careful enough in that wish? If these guys are going to ethnic cleanse their regions I don’t know what to think. I’m in a logical policy halting program. Don’t want a war, can’t justify ignoring an ethnic cleanse & such deliberate atrocities.

I get it, I trust you mean that in general. I do make an effort to post about the police and that violence as well. There can and are simultaneous wrongs to be corrected, and each terribly important. In the sense that there is an effort such as it is on both issues I fully agree. The efforts must ramp up in both cases. Just to be clear I don’t call for a knee jerk work up the base rush to bombing or sending troops. I do think progress is unforgivably slow in both cases.

“trumpites”??

how about “trumpets”?

Ethnic cleanse? Only if that means use terror & murder to cleanse the region of anyone who dares to resist them, up to and including fellow Muslims, because that’s essentially what they’ve been doing. In addition to countless Sunni & Shia Arab Muslims, they’ve also killed Kurds, Yazidis, Arab Christians, and any foreigners they can get their hands on, regardless of said foreigner’s nationality or religion.

I don’t know if there are any hard numbers, but it seems to me they’re equal opportunity killers of anyone who tries to thwart them, and the brutal way they kill is designed to instill terror in others in advance—it reminds me of some of the stuff the Mongols did when they were invading ever westward.

Is that something we need to get in another war over? Would it be a “winnable” war and what, exactly, would constitute victory? Any time we go in with guns blazing we seem to be resented, so it’s not something we can do unilaterally and I think POTUS has done well to ensure that local countries are directly involved.

I’m not saying I think YOU want to rush off to war, but I admit I am a bit puzzled by your very strong reaction to the news of the rape of Kayla Mueller, given all the other atrocities Da’esh has committed. “9/11 angry” isn’t regular anger, at least not in my book—it’s blood red rage. It seems disproportionate to me in light of all the beheadings, burning people alive, stonings, mass killings, etc., that’s all.

Even Trump would not lose in a rout. No ‘normal’ Republican can do much worse than Romney, at least near-term.

Edited to add: It’s really difficult to see how the GOP can get out of its death spiral. Losses are always because the candidates weren’t conservative enough, and they can’t suffer the kind of 45+ state blowout in the electoral college that might discredit that rationalization.

Compaq absorbed DEC. That caused Compaq to stumble. Compaq was then absorbed by HP under Fiorina who shredded both divisions in her inimitable way and this lead to her 2005 golden parachute. By the time she left there was essentially nothing left but overpriced tech support for people who made the mistake of buying Titanicum servers and a couple of model names on cheap PC’s to remind people of either corporation.

Had Compaq not been bought out they would have probably emerged with the biggest chunk of the server market but wall street is too impatient for real results.

Carly had the chance to use the DEC IP to reinvigorate HP and make a world class company. She preferred to outsource it instead.

If ya’ll decide to read any article published on NOLA, 10 years after Katrina…please read Charlie Pierce’s Esquire colum.

My reaction:

Wow…just wow.

Beautifully written, beautifully done. As a NOLA native and Katrina survivor, I just had to say thank you. After reading a few articles so far that seem to almost revel in the changes that have occurred in NOLA since Katrina without acknowledging how much pain and hurt and sacrifice happened and are still happening these 10 years since, I have to say your article made me both emotional and satisfied that someone seem to finally get it.

Beautifully written, beautifully done. I’ll be sharing this far an wide to my NOLA peeps.

Thank you Charlie Pierce

As most of you know, I spent last weekend in New Orleans. Driving in to the city, you can still see homes and buildings boarded up for Katrina though there has been considerable recovery. It’s definitely not the same place though. There has, I believe, been an irrevocable change in the city and its people.

re: #229 Eclectic Cyborg

there has def been change. On the outside looking in, you have folk saying bs like it’s been “change for the better” (like that crappy NYT foodie article an that Chicago-Trib shitstorm piece) but living and breathing in the city, you know that yes there is “better”, but damn if there isn’t a feeling of it being worse or NO better at all. it depends on which residents you ask. Mr Pierce’s article is the first, so far, from an outside looking in writer, who discussed both the good and the bad in NOLA after Katrina.

I really appreciated it, and I really did get kicked in the emotions when I read it.

I swear Roxette must have been up three times in the last week or so. I’ve been known to wear out an album, but Roxette? How about this forgotten classic?

I was just there myself. This isn’t the first time New Orleans has been through big change. The scars are still there, but the city’s still standing. Right after Katrina, it wasn’t clear if even that much was possible.

As it so happens I was born in 1981 and today I’m celebrating my 34th year upon this earth. I was thinking earlier about all the technological change I’ve seen in my time.

I’ve gone from:

Rotary phones
Encyclopedias
Paper maps
Paper phone books
Computers without hard drives
5 inch floppy disks
VHS tapes
Walkmans
UHF/VHF Television
Briefcase cell phones

To:
3.5 Inch Floppy disks
Discmans
DVDs
the early days of the internet (AOL/Altavista/Webcrawler)
CD-ROMs
Nokia “brick” phones
Sony Playstation
Computers with (progressively larger) hard drives
Premium Cable TV

To:

Ipods
Smartphones
Roku/Chromecast
Laptops as thin as a magazine
Cloud storage
Xbox One
Streaming media/music
Youtube
DSLRs
Smartwatches
60+ inch HDTVs

Who knows what this list will look like 10, 20 years from now? I’m not that old, but I’m plenty old enough to have seen my share of change.

There really is no place quite like New Orleans. It’s got a truly unique blend of culture and history, music and food. I think their biggest struggle, as we saw bared in front of us after Katrina, was that the majority of the population is black and not overly wealthy.

But the makeup of the city has changed forever. A good number of those who fled after Katrina did NOT come back. And of course, there’s the constant worry of whether the newly reinforced levees will do their job when the next Katrina comes.

Once upon a time I toured the Egyptian antiquities museum in Cairo. Lots of fascinating stuff, but the dates were mindboggling. Furniture from 2500 BC (4500 years ago). But near the end of the tour it hit me that the stuff from 500 BC was pretty much the same as the stuff from 2500 BC. Thousands of years went by with virtually no development of technology.

I remember someone showing my something awhile back indicating the collective knowledge of mankind has grown more in the past 25 years than it had in the prior 5000. I wish I could recall where the info came from.

Man, this guys writing style is excellent:

Hurricane Katrina, and all of the myriad events surrounding it, both good and bad, is that vast, sweeping layer within the lives of the people of New Orleans. Almost fifteen hundred people died. There was $100 billion in damage. The levees failed. The city flooded. The city, state, and federal governments failed even worse than the levees did.

I mean…BAM!

I’ve heard that as well, but I don’t really know how that’s quantified. Some things sound so profound when you’re wasted, and then suddenly you remember them the next morning when you’re sober.

re: #236 Eclectic Cyborg

Oh…I know. As I said before, I’m both a NOLA native (born and raised in the 9th ward and except for the 7 years after Katrina where I lived in DFW) and a Katrina survivor. I’ve always lived there and will probably die here or at least be buried here (not anytime soon hopefully).

It took me 8 years to finally get back to Louisiana and another year before I moved back into the city (but NOT the lower 9th ward). My entire family, other than my youngest sister (who’s married now and lives in DFW) and a cousin or 2, are ALL back in NOLA, the majority in and out of the 9th ward. I live on the edge of Jefferson parish and Orleans, but nowhere near levees.

245
Eclectic Cyborg  Aug 14, 2015 • 7:19:39pm

And on the Katrina thing. I was watching a documentary not long ago where a man was trying to get help for seniors at an apartment building in New Orleans after the flooding. He was black. He waved at every helicopter who came by and none stopped.

Then he wheeled some white patients on to the roof and started waving again.

Suddenly, the helicopters started coming.

Now tell me how fucked up that is.

I live on the MS Gulf Coast. I actually met my wife when she became one of the Katrina disapora from this area so there were at least a few good things that came out of the storm. Tenth anniversary celebrations are in full swing here too.

I really enjoyed my time in NOLA this past weekend. It’s a heck of a city.

re: #245 Eclectic Cyborg

I rarely talk about details, but my grandmother was evacuated from NOLA East after being stuck in an Senior living apartment complex in the east. She and other family members made it out to a shelter in Thibodaux on August 31st. She died on September 1 after a massive heart attack brought on by stress, of course. Without getting into it, due to the failure of communications during that hectic week, my mom and I didn’t find out about my grandmother’s death until two days later.

10 years later, I really don’t even like to tell the story or even think about it without getting emotional. I would say it took at least 5 years to stop crying instantly when I tell the story, but even 10 years now…eventually teas will fall.

So I’m not looking forward to this 10 year “celebrations” , because I want to celebrate the good, I just can’t deal with the good without remembering the bad…

Anyway…my god-daughter Maddie looks just like my granny (Madie’s middle name is my grandmother’s first name)…so I find myself staring at her and smiling, just because…

Especially since they were those, such as former House Speaker (and, as we have now come to find out, likely pederast) Denny Hastert, that wanted to completely shitcan the entire city, just write it off like a bad loan.

Pierce did a good job with this article, because I alternately want to cry and want to punch some people’s lights out, starting with Jindal.

Turkey must be concerned. They were dead set against the US basing out of Incirlik for some time.

It gives Turkey cover to more agressively attack YPG positions.

“We’ll let you use our airbase to attack ISIL, as long as you tolerate our attacks on Kurdish separatists.”
