It’s getting harder to keep track of all the pretzel logic here.

Consider that birthers think Jindal, Cruz, Rubio, and even Santorum aren’t eligible to be President because they fall under the very rule that Jindal is seeking to abolish (birthright citizenship). All were born here even as their own parents (one or both) weren’t necessarily US citizens at the time.

Being born here is sufficient for constitutional purposes, but Jindal, Trump and the right wing xenophobes (and I repeat myself) want to abolish this provision, which would take a constitutional amendment.

They want to repeal this, even though it would seem to invalidate their own claim and those of their rivals because their citizenship would be in question. Of course, they’ll move to repeal this prospectively - affecting everyone else going forward, leaving their own candidacies untouched.

Of course, that’s entirely besides the point. They’re whipping up a good hate, and they can’t let it pass them by.

GOP Candidates Take Knife To Messican-Loving Parts Of Constitution

You see, while some amendments are holy and can never be restricted — like the Second, which preserves all the others at the mere cost of 30,000 dead Americans annually — others have unintended consequences that simply can’t be tolerated, like how the 14th lets Messicans from all over Latin America come here and pop out a bunch of new citizens who have to be treated as if they had rights or something.

Ezra Klein’s got a fairly decent breakdown of what exactly the effects of Trump’s plan will be. Basically, it boils down to calculated sadism - the infliction of pain on the children of brown people until they give in to despair.

Frightened children huddle in the night while crossing the border. Or, as Trump’s supporters would say, “Target practice.”

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said he does not support ending birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented workers and that Donald Trump’s immigration proposal could not pass Congress during a visit to the Iowa State Fair on Tuesday.

“I don’t agree with that,” Rubio told reporters when asked if he supports ending birthright citizenship, the controversial policy included in Trump’s recently released plan to overhaul the U.S. immigration system.

“I haven’t read his plan, I’ve only read press accounts, or some of them,” he added. “Obviously there are some ideas that have merit, but the majority of it is not a workable plan that could ever pass Congress.”

After Clinton encouraged the group to champion policies, activist Julius Jones accused her of “victim blaming.” But Clinton pushed back, saying systemic racism can’t be solved without changes in criminal justice, housing and education policies.

“You can keep the movement going, which you have stated, and through it you may actually change some hearts. But if that’s all that happens we’ll be back here in 10 years having the same conversation because we will not have all the changes that you deserve to see happen in your lifetime,” she said

But Donald wants H1B’s to come here and take engineering jobs from Americans, the Carly Plan

[Embedded content]

Sure, but he wants them to be more expensive:

Increase prevailing wage for H-1Bs. We graduate two times more Americans with STEM degrees each year than find STEM jobs, yet as much as two-thirds of entry-level hiring for IT jobs is accomplished through the H-1B program. More than half of H-1B visas are issued for the program’s lowest allowable wage level, and more than eighty percent for its bottom two. Raising the prevailing wage paid to H-1Bs will force companies to give these coveted entry-level jobs to the existing domestic pool of unemployed native and immigrant workers in the U.S., instead of flying in cheaper workers from overseas. This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program. Mark Zuckerberg’s personal Senator, Marco Rubio, has a bill to triple H-1Bs that would decimate women and minorities.

I’m sure that Silicon Valley would have lots to say about Trump’s ideas.

Doesn’t surprise me. People love to use the Civil Rights leaders of the past who are venerated and sadly in Julian, MLK, and many other cases now deceased so they tell BLM and today’s civil rights leaders to shut up.

John Kasich: I’ve led on Black Lives Matter issues

“I’m one governor who has also led on this issue,” he added.

Kasich noted that he assembled a diverse panel to explore issues of community and police relations. The governor created the task force in December, after Cleveland came under intense scrutiny for police misconduct. In November, the Cleveland Division of Police came under fire after 12-year-old Tamir Rice was gunned down by an officer. And in December, the U.S. Justice Department released a report finding a pattern of the use of excessive force by Cleveland police.

The governor pointed out that two of the recommendations from his task force are already being implemented: officials are working on a statewide policy on the use of deadly force by police, as well as improving the recruiting and hiring practices of Ohio police departments.

In the nativists’ dreams, redefining birthright citizenship to exclude the children of undocumented immigrants would allow them to strip millions of Hispanic-Americans of their citizenship. If you extend that to foreigners giving birth in the US on temporary visas, they could get rid of many more, including Jindal, for example, a nativists’ wet dream.

“The Civil War and the emancipation of the slaves shaped the Republican Party and pushed it in the direction of nationalism, inclusiveness, and openness,” Foner says. “The idea was that citizenship should be extended to people regardless of accidental characteristics, such as race, national origin, or the status of their parents. This established a national standard for citizenship. The principle was one of opportunity and inclusiveness. That’s what the Republican Party stood for. The 14th amendment became one of the defining principles of the Republican Party.”

At the time, the 14th amendment did also have an impact on immigration status, Foner adds. “The equivalent back then would have been the Chinese in the U.S.,” Foner says. “They could not become naturalized citizens. Nonetheless, their children born here were citizens under the 14th amendment. The point is, this isn’t just about black people. It’s a statement about what America is. It’s a place where anybody can become a citizen regardless of their parents, religion, or race.”

Missouri legislators consider intern dress code

And why would they consider such a thing, you may wonder?

JEFFERSON CITY — Lawmakers are weighing in with their suggestions on how to best improve the Missouri House intern policy, and one early notion being kicked around is establishing an intern dress code.

The idea was greeted with disdain by Democrats, and set off a firestorm on social media, with critics arguing that it was victim blaming that would do nothing to address the problem of sexual harassment.

Rep. Kevin Engler, a Farmington Republican, was chosen to lead the effort to craft a new policy after House Speaker John Diehl was forced to resign following revelations by The Star that he exchanged sexually suggestive texts with a 19-year-old House intern. Two months later, Sen. Paul LeVota, an Independence Democrat, announced his resignation after two interns accused him of sexual harassment.

152
Nyet  Aug 18, 2015 • 12:20:06pm

The redefinition of racism as “power + prejudice” only makes sense if you’re talking about the systemic/institutional racism. Yes, it’s the white power structure in the US, so it’s the white racism by default, that much is obvious. I still wouldn’t find that def all that useful in such a case, because it ignores the local power differentials, which may differ from the main one.

Using this definition to talk about the individual racism is pretty much impossible without devolving into absurdities like “blacks can’t be racist against whites” (even if we are talking about the very same eliminationist rhetoric, just with the races switched), NOI isn’t racist, etc.

Of course their needs aren’t actually any different than ours. Black Americans are still just regular Americans until they decide they aren’t. Seeing them be just as extreme as the wingnuts is very off-putting.

Your first paragraph is a semantic argument, but the definition that you insist isn’t valid is very widely used, generally by people on the lower side of the power scale. And it’s pretty close to definition number 2 for racism at dictionary.com:

1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.

3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

OTOH, the definition I believe you’re using isn’t in there. Nothing in there about there being differences in what each group may need/want.

The second paragraph, I STRONGLY disagree with. The thing is, blacks aren’t the ones who separated themselves from the mainstream, nor are they the ones who put themselves on the down side of the power structure. so, to say, “Black Americans are still just regular Americans until they decide they aren’t.” just seems nonsensical. I’d say Black Americans will never be just regular Americans until we all decide they are, and stop treating them differently, and generally worse than we treat whites.

Well speaking of zombie brains. I’m one happy amateur genealogist today since I’m pretty certain that I can say I found the final resting spot of my great great grandparents. Sites like Find a Grave and Ancestry are such amazing resources. I really feel like making a trip to Pittsburgh one of these days and getting some flowers to put on these graves. These people may be long gone but they’re not forgotten here. Now if only there were some photographs to match the names to faces. But alas I have accomplished more than I ever dreamed I would when I set out on this project.

Nope. It’s Straight Outta Compton? That gets news coverage for the fact that no violence occurred. Why would there be any? Nothing like a little racism and prejudice to juice the headlines.

They’re also killing white people, though that gets less publicity because there aren’t a lot of white activists trying to rein in out of control cops. Frightened, out of control cops are a serious problem for us all, and would be even if it they were only killing black people. We’re all in this together.

You’re both right.

The focus on the black lives is legitimate, because there’s an anti-black bias.

And it is also true that the police behavior is not reducible to only the anti-black bias: the police hubris, rotten “culture” and impunity also play a role.

Venn.

Blacks suffer disproportionately. When whites suffer, cops don’t get punished in many cases too, so, one could ask, what chance do the black people have if even many whites don’t get justice?

harvson3  Aug 18, 2015 • 12:44:23pm

To deny birthright citizenship is to make these people into stateless persons. To send them out of the country of their birth, where they may or may not have family or membership, to set them adrift, is beyond the pale.

There’s historical precedent in this. I was reading Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism (Aug 1959 printing) this morning. In Chapter Nine she writes of the stateless who emerged after the First World War (and later after the Second World War), chief among them the Jews and the Armenians.

Making people stateless dehumanizes them, denies them of their inalienable rights with which they are endowed, by placing them outside the political community that grants and protects rights. Making people stateless was one of the steps in the rise of totalitarianism, right before the Nuremberg Laws and “the distinction between Reich citizens (full citizens) and nationals (secondly class citizens without political rights)” (288). If they don’t belong here, and here is the only home they’ve known, then they belong nowhere and to no country.

Just a quote, taken in hindsight:

The survivors of the extermination camps …. were regarded as savages and, afraid that they might end by being considered beasts, they insisted on their nationality, the last sign of their former citizenship, as their only remaining and recognized tie with humanity. Their distrust of natural, their preference for national, rights comes precisely from their realization that natural rights are granted even to savages. Burke had already feared that natural “inalienable” rights would confirm only the “right of the naked savage,”’ and therefore reduce civilized nations to the status of savagery. Because only savages have nothing more to fall back upon than the minimum fact of their human origin, people cling to their nationality all the more desperately when they have lost the rights and protection that such nationality once gave them. Only their past with its “entailed inheritance” seems to attest to the fact that they still belong to the civilized world.

If a human being loses his political status, he should, according to the implications of the inborn and inalienable rights of man, come under exactly the situation for which the declarations of such general rights provided. Actually the opposite is the case. It seems that a man who is nothing but a man has lost the very qualities which make it possible for other people to treat him as a fellow-man. This is one of the reasons why it is far more difficult to destroy the legal personality of a criminal, that is of a man who has taken upon himself the responsibility for an act whose consequences now determine his fate, than of a man who has been disallowed all common human responsibilities (300).

Like climate change, this isn’t a fun political debate between two sides. These are dangerous and offensive beliefs held by a far-too-significant portion of the American electorate, stoked by people (Ivy League college graduates, a former Rhodes Scholar) who should stop, think, and make atonement.

I went to the source article SMOTI linked to about the Jerusalem story (at the absurd wingnut Investigative Project on Terrorism website) and they described it thus:

It shows a soldier preparing for battle. He puts on a Revolutionary Guard patch, and then a Qassam Brigades headband, followed by a ski mask and a Palestinian scarf around his neck, while arming himself with a machine gun and a pistol. As he puts on a helmet, we see him looking over Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, home of the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa mosque. The image pulls back, showing the soldier amid a sea of conquering troops.

LOL, my first thought was that it sounds like a Red Dawn inspired video, but modified for Iranian hardliners.

I don’t think we want to equate every time someone points out specific groups that are suffering along with blacks into “All Lives Matter.” It minimizes those groups as well who do have their own issues (poor children who graduate at the top of their high school class only finish college at the rate of wealthy children who barely passed high school, for instance).

Instead, I think we should acknowledge them as well and then point out to poor whites that their racism is blinding them to the fac that suppressing minorities affects them, is not the way to treat other people, and that the wealthy are using their racism to rob them as well. Or something like this. You get the idea.

I believe it’s based on the rules. IIRC, the relevant ones specified that the official whose account it is is the one who makes the determination of what emails are work-related and which aren’t. Having turned over the emails that HRC determined were work-related, the remainder, keeping them on her own personal server, now that she’s a private citizen, might be tantamount to keeping piles of State Department paper documents.

Oh not saying that I like the jokes or approve. I just don’t feel bad for her when she gets mocked. Still though, I’ll defend her or call out Mann Coulter jokes. They’re silly and immature. I just don’t feel sorry for her when she gets insulted but as Sergey correctly points out calling her Mann Coulter is a lot more offensive than just her and frankly is something she would do.

I think it’s fair game to point out that she’s made a lot of money being the pretty young blond who says outrageous stuff, so to point out that as she becomes less pretty and less young she has to say more outrageous stuff is fair. Similarly, I don’t think anyone’s marital and sexual status or history is fair game unless they lay claims to moral high ground.
