Ben Carson Wants to Use Drones to Drop Bombs On American Soil To Protect the Border

The Trump factor
Immigration • Views: 89,096

GOP hopeful Ben Carson has decided that Donald Trump’s outrageous and extreme positions on immigration aren’t sufficiently Trump-y enough. Therefore, Carson has decided to out-Trump him:

Behold, let’s carry out UAV strikes on US territory to secure US border.

You get the feeling that Carson has never heard of the Posse Comitatus Act? But certainly Carson does appear to be aiming to create and maintain a police state, complete with airstrikes against undesirables within our borders.

He’s hit the daily double for derp with this.

It’s yet another reason why the GOP is so completely off the rails and can’t be trusted to govern.

UPDATE at 8/19/15 10:19:20 am by lawhawk

More context:

This is no one-off the cuff claim that he’s going to be able to easily walk back. He’s talking about doing anything possible, up to and including drone strikes within the US, to secure the border.

I can’t help but think of the movie Escape from LA and how it portrayed a US that was turned into a theocracy following a natural disaster and put up walls to secure the border and deported or killed undesirables. This is the very kind of dystopian future that the GOP is reaching for.

UPDATE at 8/19/15 10:29:23 am by lawhawk

Additional context would seem to leave the door open to using drone strikes and that Carson is pointing to the use of drones (UAVs) to secure our borders as part of a broader tech solution.

The problem is that we’ve already been trying the technological solutions, and they’ve been a big failure. We already use UAVs for monitoring the border but their use has been ineffective.

For nearly a decade, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has touted its drone program as an “effective technology to further enhance operational capabilities,” but according to the agency’s 2014 end of fiscal year report, the results are anything but impressive, fueling new calls for the program to be grounded.

The program has a fleet of 9 Predator drones and the Department of Homeland Security is planning to spend another $443 million for more aircraft to help secure the Mexican border. But a Jan. 6 report from the agency’s inspector general is advising against the expansion.

“Notwithstanding the significant investment, we see no evidence that the drones contribute to a more secure border, and there is no reason to invest additional taxpayer funds at this time,” said DHS Inspector General John Roth. “Securing our borders is a crucial mission for CBP and DHS. CBP’s drone program has so far fallen far short of being an asset to that effort.”

These are the same people that insist that Obama is gonna drone strike you any minute now…assuming he doesn’t death panel you, or send in his army of illegals+gang bangers and Tier 1 operators on you for clinging to guns and religion.

And one of their dudes goes and says “Everything you were afraid Obama would do in the US? *I’ll* do it…don’t worry, I’m just gonna do it to the brown people”, and they’re just gonna sit there and yip their approval like a bunch of brainless fascists.

Which they are.

At times I am shocked that most tea party fanatics like Carson simply can’t comprehend that undocumented immigration is essentially a misdemeanor offense.
I guess they would also be fine with local police forces conducting summary executions for homeless people sleeping in public parks,

Not from that group. In case you haven’t heard, Carly is in big trouble today for a speech she gave back in 2001:

Today’s Carly Fiorina news: Many conservatives are voicing outrage about a speech Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina gave shortly after the 9/11 attacks expressing her concern over the safety of Hewlett-Packard colleagues “who are of Middle Eastern descent or who practice the Muslim religion here in the US and abroad.” In her Sept. 26, 2001 speech, Fiorina said that the “gifts [of Muslim civilizations] are very much a part of our heritage.” […]

Quelle horreur!!

As soon as another wingnut commentator spewed some nastiness, ex-congresswoman Michele Bachmann is mentioned in the article as having also jumped on the outrage train. I bet it won’t take her & Frank Gaffney long to uncover whatever Muslim Brotherhood ties Carly may have… //

This is what ruins you in Republican circles not ya know saying we should use drones on the border or getting rid of a 150 year old policy involving children of immigrants but say some nice things about Muslims and oh no. Not that I feel sorry for Fiorina since she’s part of a truly awful party but that positive language about Muslims damages you more than xenophobia says a lot about that party and the direction they’re going in.

OK, I have to defend to condemn. See, he was being consistent. An unmanaged economy does, indeed, go through these busts followed by booms. Take a look sometime at the list of recessions in, oh, the 1800s just for an example. Every couple of years, followed by a couple of years when things went well, back and forth.

The condemnation? The reason most of the US citizens didn’t die is the majority grew their own food. Even so, the ebb and flow moved the land of many into the hands of those who had enough to lend in the good (and survive the bad).

Paraphrased, it’s Biblical. Those who have, get. And the poor? well, they’ll be with us always so why should we care? (Sarcasm, by the way. Just in case your meter’s broken.)

You know what’s weird about all the ZOMG Muslims are threatening our way of life stuff? Last night I was watching the video below about the Mayas, and it told the story of how their hieroglyphic writing was lost, thanks to European Christians.

I already knew how badly New World cultures had been decimated by the arrival of the Europeans, but I’d kinda forgotten how truly brutal it was. I mean they were basically the Da’esh of the 16th century—religious fanatics (Spanish Inquisition) who set about torturing & murdering the natives in the most horrible ways imaginable to force them to submit to their Christian world view. They burned libraries full of books, destroyed artwork they found offensive…

They were exactly like the Taliban, ISIS, etc. *shudder*

The County itself isn’t bad, especially compared to Maricopa, but we keep electing state representatives and senators who don’t represent us. They keep selling us out to Phoenix. Outside of the Sierra Vista / Fort Huachuca area, the County is pretty live and let live, small l libertarian rather than authoritarian wingnut. The racism is usually imported, as old timers grew up for generations in a border community, and are often at least semi bilingual.

Judge repeats gun rights slogan during sentencing for illegal buys

In giving probation with no jail time to a Milwaukee man charged with 55 counts of buying firearms with fake identification and dealing them without a license, a federal judge delivered a message:

“People kill people,” U.S. District Rudolph Randa said, echoing a common gun rights slogan. “Guns don’t kill people.”

Dontray Mills, 24, purchased a total of 27 firearms, mostly handguns, between December 2012 and April 2014 and pleaded guilty to one of the charges on April 22, 2014, after an ATF investigation. As a result of the conviction, Mills will never again be able to buy firearms legally.

On Wednesday, he was sentenced. As part of the plea bargain, prosecutors agreed with the one year of probation.

Judge Randa is a total wingnut.

Judge of the Day: Rudolph Randa

It’s hard out here for an immigrant. Arizona has immigrants in the crosshairs, as we all know. Immigrants might also be unable to clerk for federal judges (or at least get paid for it).

And when they commit crimes and get sentenced, immigrants are sometimes subjected to snide remarks by judges. The Seventh Circuit recently vacated a sentence and remanded for resentencing by a different judge, after trial judge Rudolph Randa (E.D. Wis.) made some unfortunate comments in sentencing defendant Jose Figueroa. From the Seventh Circuit opinion, by the fabulous Judge Diane Wood:

During the hearing, the district court digressed to discuss Figueroa’s native Mexico, the immigration status of Figueroa and his sisters, and the conditions and laws in half a dozen other countries—not to mention unnecessary references to Hugo Chávez, Iranian terrorists, and Adolf Hitler’s dog.

Biologically that’s true, but there is a social construct of race that very much affects different groups of people by building a hierarchy of practical rights even though there isn’t supposed to be a difference in legal rights.

Yeah, and it pisses me off.

What did the Ashley Madison site actually deliver to its subscribers? The makeup is said to be overwhelmingly men. Something must have kept the marks on the hook.

The lure of illicit sex. Whether or not any was actually delivered, well, that is irrelevant. Just the idea of doing something scandalous is enough for some guys.

Sme propose our society is heading to a time when keeping secrets will be almost impossible.

An interesting thing to ponder.

I suspect we are there already. Many years ago I did some research and was startled to realize how much information about people was available. This was 30 years ago. One result of that research was an ongoing battle with various institutions (such as my kids colleges) to prevent SS numbers from being used as a ID number/key. Back then everyone asked for your SS and people readily supplied it. In fact, it was common to have it printed on checks. With current algorithms, they manage to compile the information without such a simple key.

I understand. It’s just that gun violence is an actual problem and these same talking heads dismiss sensible gun control talk. But regarding sharks, it’s my understanding and maybe someone who understands the science more can help me but some of the rise in attacks has been attributed to the rising sea temperatures and pollution.

For a few decades, the Army used SSAN as their serial number. They’ve stopped. As you said some colleges also used them as student ID. The SSAN is explicitly not to be used as ID for other purposes.

You stand ‘em up and put them side by side and your make a real nice wall. It’ll be nice. Beautiful. You get to the top somehow, you can’t get down. Tunnels? Steel shot will raise hell with a shotgun barrel.

Old barrels yes, ones made since 1970 ~ 1980 (depending on manufacturer) no. It’s also choke dependent: steel makes a choke act like two steps tighter and in some older barrels, steel is ok so long as it’s not choked tighter than modified. My Ithaca M37 in 16 gauge is in this category. OTOH, my Steven 311 SxS is lead or non-steel/non-toxic (aka “The Expensive Bismuth Shit”) only. I would like to get some bismuth shot this fall to take that Stevens out duck hunting but I may not be able to afford it. A plug for the Ithaca is much cheaper :D

Interesting day at work today. One of our customers came in and said “I’ve got a scuba tank I was given, could you take a look at it for me?”. Not altogether an uncommon request, so I told him to bring it in.

In comes a battered and scarred up Aluminum tank. Thing has mud on it, and the paint is all beat to hell, but looks generally solid. I start looking for the “born-on” date that’s stamped on it, and it’s 1983. They also have to be pressure tested every 5 years and that’s stamped on it, but there are no other hydro test marks.

Turns out that a farmer friend of his found it out in an old abandon field that he was getting ready to brush hog. It was lying under an old pile of brush, apparently it got deposited there years and years ago during a flood.

Had to tell him that due the the age of the tank, it was made of an alloy that is no longer used, since it tended to form stress cracks in the neck, and then explode while filling (which was often fatal for the operator of the fill station (me)). Said it was probably worth 35 bucks as scrap, or if he knew somebody with a machine shop, to cut the bottom 6-8 inches off, makes a hell of a wind chime.

Since it didn’t cost him anything, he wasn’t unhappy, I have a feeling it may end up on his deck as a chime.

That was pretty much the high point of my day.

Painted aluminum tanks carry another hidden risk. For a short while many were painted then dried in high-heat ovens, degrading their initial heat treatment.

The Ft Knox club filled their tanks conventionally, in a water bath, to avoid adiabatic hotspots. The bath was a 55 gallon can set into a reinforced concrete culvert section.

My comment block is invisibly retaining parts of earlier comments, even after shutdown.
Above was cleaned up.
