Monstrous Fluffy Vampire Squirrel Caught on Film for the First Time

The tail is a trap
Science • Views: 63,505

Lurking in the forests of Borneo, the elusive, demonic vampire squirrel (aka, the Bornean tufted ground squirrel) hunts deer and drinks their blood. Or so it is said.

We have yet to verify the blood-drinking, but this video, shot in infrared in the middle of the night (when the vampire squirrel is on the prowl) does confirm the horrible fluffiness of its gigantic tail.

More info on this hideous yet fluffy monster.

Is the vampire squirrel ground foraging for bugs and nuts, or is it sniffing the spoor of its prey?

I saw ‘Monstrous Fluffy Squirrel’ and thought this was going to be about the pic from the previous thread:

What, this isn’t a good squirrel costume? Should I make the tail longer?

(May have told this story here before, so forgive the old lady memory.) I worked for awhile in a library as a page, shelving books. Nice library on the edge of a fairly new upscale neighborhood, nouveau riche rather than old money. There were clearly labelled bins at the end of the shelf rows in the children’s section to put books back for re-shelving. Sweet little girl asked her mother in my hearing what she should do with the book she’d pulled out but decided she didn’t want. Mother told her, “Drop it on the floor. Somebody will pick it up.”

Gah.

Since Kim Davis was jailed for Contempt, I’ve seen a couple wingnuts trying to argue that she’s the only one following the law, because the SCOTUS ruling is just a ruling, and it requires an act of Congress to make it into a law, and that until that happens, the ban on Same Sex Marriage in KY is the prevailing law.

Talk about clinging! I explained that, in finding any legal impediment to marriage equality unconstitutional, those laws all cease to exist - POOF! Gone! - so that, no, the KY law no longer exists at all.

I got accused of FEDERALISM!!!

One of the easiest ways to piss off anyone in retail or customer service is to say “The customer is always right.”

At one of my prior jobs, an angry customer dropped that on our Assistant Manager who immediately responded: “I’m sorry we don’t follow that policy here.”

The broad and deep expertise of the scientists and engineers at DOE’s National Laboratories and nuclear security sites was brought to bear on the Iran negotiations from the start. Indeed, the decades of nuclear security experience and ingenuity of this dedicated workforce forms the foundation on which our confidence in the effectiveness of the agreement rests. Um, SCOTUS is there to clarify/codify the laws and does have the power to tell the cities, states and the Feds that what they did was a big no-no, and depending on what was argued, either shuts down allowed behavior or permits previously restricted behavior.

Remember, these are pretty much the same kind of people who first had to be given representation out of proportion with their population via the Senate, then that out-of proportion representation reinforced in the Electoral College, and even their Congressional representation inflated by counting the nonvoting noncitizens they held as property.

And 71years later, they decided to take their dolls and dishes and go home when somebody they didn’t like got elected, at the cost of some 600,000 lives.

These are spoiled children who think that if they don’t get their way in every particular, they’re being oppressed.

I’ve laid low on the politics for a couple days and it has been a nice break in a way. There is so much crazy going on, you can go away for a bit and count that you really haven’t missed anything as a lot of it is the same old crap served up in different outrage packaging. Plus, I am storing up for the next big debate. Gotta make more room for more TRUMP.

Been thinking of some of the reaction from the fundamental RWNJs over Kim “Look at me God” Davis. It all begins to remind me of the reaction of children. That age of childhood where no ruling is accepted from the authorities and every aspect of that ruling shall be challenge for legality, properness, fairness, extent, definition…anything to get around doing what is right.

These people act like kids that need to get their way. Davis is doing nothing more than throwing a tantrum, but is 10 instead of 2 years of age, so there is some basic knowledge she has gained that makes her think she is outsmarting the adults because she knows something you all don’t all the while still stamping her feet.

I agree. Maybe it’s possible to get Windows to work right—but it would be too much like the early days of color TV, when you basically had to have a live-in engineer to keep the convergence adjusted.

Not being one of the generation that grew up using a personal computer, I’ll simply give it up if OS X is no longer an option. And writing my own OS on the fly whenever I want the computer to do anything—AKA Linux—is also not an option. Maybe I’m smart enough to learn, maybe I’m not, but the bottom line is: I’nawanna!

What’s a creat?re: #84 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

My girlfriends’ niece gave us her old HP laptop a couple of years ago—with the Vista install discs. Just for the hell of it, I installed it and started it up—345 updates. I clicked “Install”. It took >24 hours. Well, fine, you say—that’s all over and done with. Every time I’d start it, there were over 100 new updates—I mean in a day or two! It’s now got 1/2” of dust on it over in the corner.

Right now the Windows 10 is free…..If you wiped it clear of Vista and installed W10, would that work? I mean if you just reset, clean, defrag, blah, blah, and start with what you have it may be worth a shot. I neglected Windows updates because some of them were shit. So I turned off auto and woke up to what you have. It took a few days, but it’s a freebie…

As Sergey said, you can’t go to there from Vista. The thing keeps overheating and shutting itself off anyway, so I don’t want to waste any money on it. Sometimes I think it’d be handy to have a PC around, just for the odd thing, like Yahoo abandoning Yosemite for Instant Messenger, but if I really wanted to pay for Windows, I’d just put it in a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook.

Installing update 41 of 185…

Thank you for reminding me…this computer I got for my new gig is nice - Dell Latitude 7450, 16gb ram, 250gig SSD hard drive, Windows 7 Professional…and I really don’t care for working in a Windows environment, so I’m thinking about installing Ubuntu since I have 250 gigs of space to play with and could easily create a 100 gig partition and boot to that. It’ll also prevent the nanny-ware that the company installed from fucking with me. I’ll just have to see if it lets me onto the network, or if there’s a Cisco VPN that works with Unix…or maybe just alternate back to Windows when I need to be on the network from home.

Try Linux Mint 17.2. The updates run in the background while you work. Seldom requires a reboot. Plus the OS is free. I am not a gamer so Wine is not an issue for me. The dusty laptop would seem to be a good machine to try it on.

What the wingnuts don’t seem to understand is that the laws that Davis’ critics are saying should be enforced are the very ones that wingnuts have tried to claim they’re defending, namely marriage laws. The issue that they can’t seem to get through their thick skulls is no new law was created by Obergfell, no law that makes same-sex marriage legal that she is refusing to abide by. The ruling simply said that state laws against such marriages are unconstitutional, i.e. defunct, and so she cannot discriminate against same-sex couples seeking marriage licenses.

For “constitutional scholars,” these morons don’t seem to understand that she is the one who is going against the very Constitution they’ve jacking off to.

I’m making my “Second Rate Ribs” tonight for dinner. Rather than the 6 hours or so at 200* in the smoker after sitting 24 hours with dry rub, and an apple juice-butter mop sauce I’m just hitting them with my basic rub, pour some sauce over them, seal them in a foil package and bake at 300 for about 2 hours or so. Pull them out, toss under the broiler to firm them up a bit, and enjoy with some ‘tater salad and a rye bread.

Not as good as could be, but good enough for tonight. (besides, I’d sort of like to eat before midnight)

Putting aside the “she’s not responsible for anything that happened before she got her “get out of sin free from jebus card,” which I really have a difficult time swallowing:

Her explanation is that her conversion was because of her “godly” mother-in-law’s dying wish. This same “godly” woman was her mother-in-law from 1996-2004 when she was married to Davis the first time, then, again, the “godly” woman was her mother-in-law from 2009-2011, when she (the mother-in-law) died and Kimmie found jebus.

10 years of the “godly” woman’s divine influence, but Kimmie didn’t feel the “godly” pull until after the woman died?

So, to recap:

45 years of doing whatever the hell she wanted; 10 of those 45 years in the close proximity of this “godly” woman who wanted her to convert; only 4 years as a “godly” woman herself, and suddenly it’s a “heaven or hell decision” that “violates her conscience.”

Yeah, not buying it, thank you very much.

re: #140 Nyet

Kim is an adulteress by her own NT standards, and by her OT standards she is liable to be stoned.

Davis is also a heretic (at least if you’re into the heresy-type thing). She belongs to an Apostolic Pentecostal church. Instead of believing in three persons of the Trinity, they are modalists who believe God is one person (Jesus) who manifests himself in three ways: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. This, if you talk to evangelical Protestants, puts her firmly in the heresy camp and she really might not be saved.

This is rather a repeat of what happened with Proposition 8 in California, where the Catholic leadership and evangelical Protestants were quite willing to have the heretical Mormons lead the campaign and do all the footwork to get Prop 8 passed. But the Mormons got the headaches afterwards and they’re still considered heretics by both Catholics and Protestants.

Now all this is just to say one this: keep religion out of our politics. Can you imagine if we had to take into account someone’s religious beliefs in the course of government business? It’d be nuts.
