Overnight Jam: Leon Bridges, NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

We probably should have shot this Tiny Desk Concert in black-and-white. Listening to Leon Bridges, I hear a sound with its heart and soul rooted in 1962. There’s purity in his voice that’s unadorned, untouched and unaffected by 21st-century pop. It’s just soul.

Still, the songs from this 26-year-old Fort Worth singer feel refreshing in the context of the day. Surely there’s touches of Sam Cooke’s spiritual sound, but Leon Bridges has a way of making the familiar feel adventurous and new. It may be because this is all new to him. He only picked up the guitar around the age of twenty and only began listening to classic soul music after friends told him he sounded like R&B musicians from long ago. What Leon Bridges has tapped into on his debut album with fellow Fort Worth musicians including Austin Jenkins from White Denim is a universal sound, an undeniably heartfelt sound which transcends age, race and musical tastes. He’s easy to love and tough to resist and his performance at the Tiny Desk with his fabulous band is a testament to what it means to sing from the heart.

In considering why we have such throwbacks trying to run for government offices, consider this: Duck Dynasty gets 4.7 million viewers a week:

I drop the houseguests off at the airport in the morning so I can also drive there tomorrow if needed to help out. I don’t anticipate this being needed or useful, but it at least lets me feel like I have the possibility of doing something.

Death of Fairfax County inmate ruled an accident

“It was an is a very sad video. But the more I watched it, and I watched it dozens of times, it’s clear that these deputies were pleading with her to cooperate. It was reported early on I think that she was 120-130 pounds, why did they need all these deputies. All of the deputies, all of them, said she was tremendously strong, she had almost superhuman strength,” Morrogh said.

Their logo is derived from that of the 2nd SS Panzer Division (Das Reich) and their ranks include a good number of Neo-Nazis. They aren’t visible except near Maripol because the sheer weight of force arrayed against them means they work to avoid antagonizing the Ukrainian government, since they’ll need support if attacked.

So they’re high-order assholes, but unlike “Coralrocks50” their leadership can figure out basic odds and necessities.

Strong debut by Colbert, I must say. I enjoyed the show. I did think of it as The Colbert Report Plus, though Stephen used the talk show platform to a tee. He’ll settle quite nicely into the format methinks. Even his interview with Jeb! was good stuff. Stephen still has that quasi-confrontational interview style but he asked questions that elicited honest responses from Jeb!

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert gets my thumbs up.

The diesels on all T-64s are descended from the V-2 engine that powered the BT-7M of 1938(!). “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, has been a guiding principal for tank engine design in Ukraine and Russia from Soviet times till today.

The armor is mostly the same, but its designed from the first to permit ERA tiles to be placed over it, and these are supposedly advanced tiles which will effect HVAPFS-DS rounds and well as HEAT projectiles. If that’s true, the glacis would be invulnerable at long range, though the 120mm on the M1, Leclec and Leopard 2 should still be able to force a breech at 1,000 meters.

Alas, the chances are remote.

Not zero though, as the clouds from hurricane Linda are drifting into northern Baja, as seen here:

Linda is expected to turn sharply south west so if we don’t get any rain from it this morning then we probably won’t at all.

The squawk that it means the end of her 1A rights doesn’t mean what she thinks it means.

She doesn’t have a 1A right to use religion to further her bigotry through government actions - the problem with Kim Davis’ position. That is a de facto violation of the 1A.

Her right to be a bigot and show the entire world she’s a bigot by saying that gays are evil or worse is not infringed, nor is her right to carry on her religious beliefs.

She can’t - and never could - impose her religious beliefs through government action.

Oh, and her rights aren’t in the slightest infringed by what happened to Davis. That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

EU ‘not in a good state,’ Junker says in state of union speech

The European Union suffers from a lack of unity, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has said in a state of the union speech. How the EU addresses today’s refugees will be a defining moment for the bloc.
The European Commission will offer better protection for refugees and improve its frontier defenses, its head, Jean-Claude Junkers, told members of European Parliament in a speech on Wednesday in Strasbourg.

“There is no reason to put things in rosy colors - we are not in a good state,” he said. “There is a lack of Europe in this union and a lack of union in this European Union. We have change that and now.”

The European Union suffers from a lack of unity, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has said in a state of the union speech. How the EU addresses today’s refugees will be a defining moment for the bloc.
EU Rede Juncker vor dem Europaparlament

The European Commission will offer better protection for refugees and improve its frontier defenses, its head, Jean-Claude Junkers, told members of European Parliament in a speech on Wednesday in Strasbourg.

“There is no reason to put things in rosy colors - we are not in a good state,” he said. “There is a lack of Europe in this union and a lack of union in this European Union. We have change that and now.”

The majority of Juncker’s speech dealt with how the bloc would respond to the ongoing refugee crisis as thousands of people flee to Europe from Syria, Africa and the Middle East.

“It is high time to act, to manage the refugee crisis because there is no alternative,” he said. “We are fighting against Islamic State, why are we not ready to accept those who are fleeing Islamic state?”

When considering their response to the refugee crisis, Europeans would do well to remember their shared history, Junker said.

“We Europeans should remember that Europe is a continent where nearly everyone at some point has been a refugee,” he said, adding that governments should not take people’s religion into account when offering a safe haven to refugees.

Refugees represent 0.11 percent of EU population

While some 500,000 refugees have come to Europe this year, including thousands from Libya and Syria, the EU is capable of accepting more, Juncker said, adding that the Commission would present plans to relocate 160,000 refugees currently in Hungary, Greece and Italy across the European Union in a compulsory way that takes into account a country’s size and economic status.

Thanks to all the Jewish Health Inspectors and Business License Clerks who allow Chinese restaurants to open (with all that wonderful pork and shellfish), BBQ joints (with all that swine), and pretty much any restaurant that isn’t a kosher restaurant.

Thanks to Muslim licensing clerks at the ATF and ABCs across the nation for allowing the sale of alcohol - the cause of, and the solution to, all of life’s problems.

Thanks to Hindu agriculture department employees for allowing cattle to be raised and slaughtered to make so much wonderful brisket, roasts, and ribs (among others).

And each would be a de facto violation of the 1A by imposing religious beliefs through government action.

ETC.

If any of them followed Davis’ example, Huckabee, Cruz, and other right wingers would be screaming bloody hell for their imposing their religious beliefs on others, but because they agree with Davis’ religious beliefs, they’re seeking to protect this blatant violation of the 1A.

Then they are consistent, with exception of the life of the mother, where they would have to choose between two persons anyway.

Politicians who say they agree with the former two exceptions do not seriously believe all fetuses are persons, so they are throwing women under the bus not out of some principle but only because they are striving for more power, and that is even more heinous than sincerely held horrible beliefs.

God’s Will Be Done. Hmm. So let’s just say it’s God’s Will that the law is fair and covers everyone regardless of gender….

I have yet to see a single so called “Christian” be able to actually articulate precisely WHAT rights of theirs no longer exist and what this “War on Christians” consists of. Because where I live, you cannot literally, and I mean literally, drive more than 5 miles and not see a church. None of those establishments are closed, in fact, on Sundays most of them have overflow parking with shuttle busses that pick people up from nearby school parking lots. In fact, my 5 mile estimate there is really more like 3 miles. On the road I live on, there are 3 churches in a 7 mile stretch. Two of them have private K-12 schools, one of which costs 20-30K a year to send your kid there. You cannot go anywhere in this area without seeing references to religion, one religion. And no one bats an eyelash. It never happens, if anything it’s become more religious not less. So I do not get it. Where is the War, what rights are being taken away? I want to hear it.

G-d’s will. Yeah, about that.

Which god would that be? Because not all gods seem to think that there’s an issue here. Heck, even some denominations of the same religion don’t think there’s an issue here.

Maybe it’s just your narrow and bigoted worldview that thinks there’s a problem - and the problem isn’t with SSM, but your bigotry, hate, etc.

Yup. That’s the ticket.

Because the same exact kinds of defenses of bigotry used against SSM licenses being issued have been seen before - when courts mandated integration, when anti-miscegenation laws were struck down, etc.

Each time, the bigots sought shelter in religious edicts and each time, claimed that their 1A rights were being trampled.

Each time they were wrong, morally and legally.

And once again, they’re wrong.

Shocking video shows man high on drugs displaying ‘superhuman strength’ as cops Taser him, use pepper spray and hit him with truncheons… all to no effect

It took a truncheon, karate kicks, pepper spray and taser for police to finally arrest a man exhibiting superhuman strength inside a crowded McDonald’s.

Workers at the Maryland restaurant had called the police after the man started throwing chairs around and arguing with himself.

But when two officers arrived, it took them seven minutes to subdue him, despite the fact they were using numerous weapons against him.

Police said the man - later identified as Marcus Anthony Moratellli, - was able to exhibit such superhuman strength because he had taken PCP, a powerful synthetic drug that can temporarily stop feelings of pain.

Funny thought; part of Buddhism is to understand the idea of attachment and to avoid attachment as much as possible. As a Buddhist, I could do much for people’s spiritual advancement if I worked as a store clerk and refused to sell anyone anything.

My corner of the Buddhist philosophy doesn’t work that way. We feel that it’s the work of a lifetime to get our own personal act together - let alone sorting out someone else.

Dear Dark Falcon,

Hippiedom died in San Francisco in 1967.

Everything called ‘hippie’ after that point was posing and riding the commercial marketing idea of what made a hippie.

Which means by the time America became familiar with Hippies, Hippies were already a done thing. Sure it took ten years for America to make as much money off the fashion as it could, but that shows how un-hippie all of it had become.

Then Disco, cocaine and consumption. No hippie in all that.

Child taken to first day of school in BMP-1

The piece has a link to the original Yahoo story but that one just refers to the BMP-1 as “a tank”, when in fact its an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

For Putin’s proxies, impressing the teaching staff means showing up in something more than an SUV.

The vehicle is question is actually a BMP-1P, as it has the bank of smoke grenade launchers on the rear of its turret.

Actor Martin Milner who gave me my view of the police, died this weekend at 83.
Millions of Americans look at the American police officer as the wholesome clean cut characters on Adam 12.

Walker has no opinions on anything:
talkingpointsmemo.com

“I’m not president today and I can’t be president today,” Walker said when asked by ABC News about how he would address the refugee crisis. “Everybody wants to talk about hypotheticals; there is no such thing as a hypothetical.”

When asked again about Syrian refugees, Walker said that as president he would work to defeat the Islamic State, according to ABC News.

Walker has declined to opine on numerous issues during the early months of his presidential campaign. When asked about Kentucky clerk Kim Davis’ refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, Walker’s campaign gave TPM a vague statement about gay marriage. The Wisconsin governor was also hesitant to take a clear position on birthright citizenship.

Day said a local doctor serving in World War II cut the portrait of Hitler from a German government building and sent it home. When the doctor died, his son donated memorabilia to the court. The Hitler portrait became part of a collage, surrounded and partially obscured by photographs, medals and the doctor’s diary entries, he said.

He hung it up to honor the veterans who defeated Hitler — not glorify the dictator, he said.

“The purpose was to show that these young Americans triumphed over fascism,” Day said.

I’ve never seen the movie about it in part because I know what will happen and that will be too tough to watch. I mean I know there are other movies like that but that’s just tough because unlike say Titanic, you have a film with all the real names and furthermore unlike Titanic, no survivors. So the people you grow to like and root for are people you know will die. Anyhow, Flight 93 crashed not too far from where my grandparents grew up in PA. Those people were heroes. I have no idea what I would have done in that situation.

John Kasich once again says something sensible, further dimming his already slim hopes of being the GOP nominee:

Ohio governor and presidential candidate John Kasich, asked to respond to the vow by other GOP candidates to rip up the Iran deal on Day One, commits absolute heresy:
“Well, what does that mean? I don’t know what that means. You’re going to rip it up and then what? Then what are you going to do when you rip it up?…To just say that we’re going to walk away — we’ve got to remember that we do have allies and we want to call on them to work with us and a lot of them are signing up to this.”

It was what a lot of critics of the invasion pointed out that taking out Hussein would just create a new enemy. The Bush administration had no plan for how to handle Iraq after the invasion. The invasion itself was fairly easy part. Easy in relative terms since we still did lose men but the occupation and the resulting strife caused much more deaths. There’s a reason why many Republicans even run away from W Bush.

Short story is that a former bigwig at the Port Authority (David Samson, now former Chairman) may have used his influence to get a flight to an airport near his vacation home. United was the airline in question - flying between Newark and SC. He would fly back and forth regularly and the flight was practically empty.

The moment he was ousted under the Bridgegate cloud, United shut down the route entirely.

It raised questions over why United started the flight in the first place - where there was little to no demand for a flight, and which appears to have been a personal favor from United to Samson.

Samson was integral in the PA’s negotiations with United on its operation at NYC metro area airports (EWR, JFK, and LGA) so the appearance of impropriety looks like the real deal.

God has forgiven KD for all her serial sins and transgressions, but by sanctioning a gay marriage, she would be condoning a permanent, ongoing, unforgivable state of sin.

Exactly. Don’t use your religious beliefs as a crutch when you got your own sins to “atone” for. As I said when the story broke, would Kim be okay with a hypothetical devout Catholic seeing her past divorces and children out of marriage and using that to refuse her a marriage cert. I don’t know how Christians handle this, but in Judaism the only sins that are forgiven on Yom Kippur are sins against G-D (not eating kosher food, working on Sabbath, wearing mixed fibers, etc.)

Sins against other human beings like robbery, murder, adultery, or saying mean things about somebody on the Internet, are not forgiven until forgiveness is granted by the victim and restitution (prison, fines, etc.) is made.

I am not so sure myself. I know in Catholicism, you repent to a priest and he tells you to do something like a certain amount of prayers and that absolves you but I don’t know Kim’s brand of Protestantism handles this. In fact, I don’t even know what her specific denomination is.

Christianity is the “blank slate” sort, where forgiveness is granted by God and covers everything. However, what it notably does not do is absolve you from earthly consequences of your sinful actions. If you fuck up and you go to jail, you can repent to God and be forgiven spiritually, but you still have to do your time and pay your penance in whatever fashion is deemed reasonable in earthly terms.

Except she is currently living in an adulterous relationship with her second/fourth husband. She can’t be in a state of grace while she is flouting God’s law by living in a state of sin. She must separate from her husband and remain celibate for the rest of her life.

If SSM bothers her so, that’s her right but she can’t continue to keep her positon and also deny people something that is legal. If we allowed any clerk to do that, we’d open up an ugly can of worms. Saw an article by Ca’s Lt Governor and former SF mayor, Gavin Newsome who wondered how they’d feel about a Quaker clerk or any other pacifist religion who denied a gun permit based on that religion’s pacifism and opposition to violence.

I’m sorry, whose rhetoric is getting people beaten and shot?? Not the BLM. Asshole.

The guy who called a whole group of people rapists has no room at all to talk about hate. BLM isn’t hating at all. They’re mad because unarmed black people killed by cops are instantly scapegoated and made out to be vicious criminals and the cops who kill them get a vicious defense and not even indictments exempting Freddie Gray.

And this whole lot about “obeying the laws of God rather than the laws of men” is taken way out of context. The Bible never says that going against secular law is a consequence-free choice. The Bible also indicates clearly and in rather strong terms that we are to obey the secular authorities because God allows them to exist.

This is the perverted Fundie logic to get out of that headlock:

God has forgiven KD for all her serial sins and transgressions, but by sanctioning a gay marriage, she would be condoning a permanent, ongoing, unforgivable state of sin.

Again, this is why our Founding Fathers had the foresight to separate Church and State, namely to prevent this sort of “reasoning” to find reflection in our civil law.

The Founders were classically educated so they actually were aware of what happened historically when religion set its hooks in government. The parade of tyrants, grifters, and madmen who goaded Europe into four debilitating Crusades would have been informative enough.

What is in the Pacific Northwest air that produces all these “anarchists”?
Do all the big trees just drive people mad?

The officer, described as a pilot at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, was stopped in traffic due to the protest when he was singled out by a “local hate group,” which calls itself the “anarchists,” according to a police news release.

“The protesters saw two confederate flags attached to the back of the victim’s motorcycle and surrounded him, rocking the bike in an attempt to knock it over,” the news release said. “They sprayed the victim in the face with mace, and struck him in the back with a baseball bat and a glass bottle filled with red paint.”

The author of that piece is a budding Charles Pierce.

Say what you will about Megyn Kelly, … she can genuinely surprise her guests with questions that cause them to blather incoherently, and she’s more than happy to stand silently by as they struggle to unburden themselves of the weight of their own palaver.

Case in point, on “The Kelly File” last night she spoke to GOP co-front-runner Dr. Ben Carson about U.S. District Judge David Bunning’s decision to catch-and-release Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis.

Carson paused, adopted a look that his handlers have no doubt told him communicates “thoughtfulness,” then proceeded to ramble around the question. “But, but,” this is a very basic right.” (As any English professor, including this former one, will tell you, using “this” without a clear referent is a clear indication that you’re speaking before you know exactly what your subject is — literally.)

“This is a, a Judeo-Christian nation, in the sense that a lot of our values are based on a Judeo-Christian faith.” Having aired that tautology, he resorted to arguing that “there are a substantial number of people who support traditional marriage, and I’m one of them.”

Ah. Not much of a reader of English history past the Spanish Armada so I didn’t know. I did read a bit about Edward VIII and Wallace Simpson. I believe that one of the objections at the time (This was in the mid-1930s) was that it would be inappropriate for Edward, as the head of the C of E, to be married to a woman twice divorced. My late father was 16 years old when Edward abdicated so the how-it-was of that era is nearly as remote as the how-it-was of ancient Rome to me.

I am not so sure myself. I know in Catholicism, you repent to a priest and he tells you to do something like a certain amount of prayers and that absolves you but I don’t know Kim’s brand of Protestantism handles this. In fact, I don’t even know what her specific denomination is.

Kim is Apostolic Christian — one of the Pentecostal churches.

You may have heard me praise Plantronics Technology. Not only has it been to the moon and back, two of their bluetooth headsets survived my Washer and Dryer.

Well, being left on a gravel driveway for a week was a challenge. The battery charged, but there was no sound.

I sent it to the CEO of Plantronics and just got a very nice phone call from his office person. Not only are they sending me another, the CEO rep sent me a email with instructions for updating the firm ware if this ever happens again and urged me to email her for help if it does.

You know, I’ve been without a bluetooth for my audiobooks for a two weeks now …

Ayup. There is some growing awareness of the fact that Christians’ general holier-than-thou attitude, rampant hypocrisy, and antiquated hyper-conservative “die on every hill” beliefs are actively driving away people who might otherwise be believers.

I legit tried to read The Martian and gave up halfway through the book. Hard science sci-fi is not my cuppa.

The movie looks good though.

Scientists look to re-animate ancient, giant ‘Frankenvirus’ found in Siberia

It’s alive! Or that’s what scientists might say when they reanimate the so-called “frankenvirus,” a 30,000-year-old giant virus that was discovered in Siberia. The French researchers behind the find - published this week in PNAS, the journal from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences - warn that climate change could reawaken dangerous microscopic pathogens, reports Agence France-Presse.

Nope but I heard it’s great. I read another work- Garden of the Beasts by the same author and thought it also deserves a movie adaption. That makes me excited though since I am familiar with the murder case that TDinWC is about and I love Scorsese.

Oh mini series? Cool. I’m going to check it out. I wonder though- Should I read the book first or after. I really liked Larson’s book about the first American ambassador to Nazi Germany. I think he’s also got a new one about the Luistiana. He’s a good historian. He like any good historian understands he’s telling stories about people and not just raw figures and statistics.

Wasn’t there a debate about the limits of megapixels at one time?

I mean, how much detail is enough - and how much detail can the human eye even process?

Well we know the eye can see far more detail than any medium known so far. More than 70mm film for instance. Which IIRC is said to be 50 or 80 megapixel equivalent. Look at how much better a 4k video looks than 1080.

Once again everything else will play catch up. My first digital was 3 megapixels I think. Now I’m at 23 megapixels per snap. So much had to be upgraded. Memory cards, hard drives , 4 or 6 processors instead of 2, 64 bit instead of 32.

If someone gave me that camera it would cost hundreds just to use it by way of storage.

Eh, it is all just more incremental stuff. A lot of it is stuff they are playing catch up on. Granted you could say they were just waiting until the technologies were mature, but then Apple has long been more about good implementation than innovation. I mean they are just implementing side by side multitasking really? It is 2015 right?

It is 2015…but who is doing this?

I have been considering a Surface for work stuff because my beloved iPad does not have sufficient input that I need. I need precision that a mouse gives me that is lacking in Apple. All my non-work stuff is Apple (from long time iTunes and apps) so going to a new infrastructure would mean multiple devices. I would love to replace my laptop, and thus far, there is nothing to do that.

I don’t know if this iPad Pro would do it but I am really liking what I am seeing thus far.

Note: Saw Jackson last night in Cleveland. Great show. Even the freighter horn got applause (stage is right on the waterway). The impossibly prolonged Sam Laud freighter (634 ‘) navigated a bend within the Cuyahoga River (behind the diploma), tooting its horn as a result of the band dusted off “These days”. I happened to be filming with my camera as it was going along behind the stage and got the horn blow reaction. Haven’t downloaded it off my camera yet.

Too bad Plantronics doesn’t have anything that I could find for bone conduction. Right now I’m fighting a nasty bout of Meniere’s (My second go round) And I’m afriad I may be stuck having to resort to bone conduction in order to listen to music again-especially if I keep having more vertigo attacks. I was actually surprised to see Ortofon make a bone transducer, but I’d have to do a wire transfer into their Danish bank to secure one of them for testing.
