Unbelievable. Milo Yiannopoulos has posted another sick article at Breitbart demanding that Shaun King submit to a DNA test to prove he’s black. These people are just unreal.

And the comments are full of incredibly horrific open racism, of course.

The superheated climate of denunciation and repudiation on the far right guarantees that some up-and-comer will successfully charge them with heresy sooner or later. Impugning your rivals’ ideological purity is an excellent way to bump them off in the interest of grabbing their share of the grift.

It’s ironic. Today you can’t be black enough. Seventy-five years ago, one drop made you black. My grandfather threw his sister out of his home when she informed him that their great-grandfather was black. That was a secret which couldn’t get out.

Make up your mind, racists, which is it?

The entire point of Milo’s attacks on Shaun King is to delegitimize him as a voice of the Black Lives Matter movement. This type of character assassination is an age-old right wing tactic, and he doesn’t have to prove it - just get the accusation out there. Part of the strategy is to never admit error, even when they’re exposed as frauds.

What is continuous is that a white dude gets to question your race, then deem you inadequately white/black according to their (rigged, purposefully moveable) standards.

Much like “assimilation,” which is always a rigged game. “Success” at assimilation means being constantly subject to re-assessment; fail once and you’re no longer assimilated. Never fail, and you’re still mocked for being inauthentic. It’s lose/lose/lose.

Why did God destroy Sodom? Well I guess you could look it up in the bible, if you were able to read.

In short,

Opinion among most liberal and mainline Christian and Jewish theologians has now reverted to the original Christian belief that Genesis 19 refers to a lack of charity and to ill treatment of strangers.

re: #21 Skip Intro

I read the link. I thought this statement was pertinent with respect to the refugees:

In ancient Jewish literature, such as the Ethics of the Fathers and the Talmud, there are many references to Sodom. The phrase “middat Sdom” was used. It may be translated as “the way the people of Sodom thought”. It meant a lack of charity and hospitality towards others; ignoring the needs of the poor, etc. In the Middle East, a person’s survival could depend upon the charity of strangers. To help strangers was a solemn religious duty of paramount importance. See Leviticus 19:33-34 and Matthew 25:35, 38 and 43.

“When you shut the government down, people don’t like it and you shouldn’t shut it down unless you have a great chance of success,” he said.

So fuck the people who don’t like it as long as the GOP has a great chance of getting its way.

Daydream whilst waiting for the US Open men’s singles final:

Martina Hingis won both this year’s US Open women’s doubles (with Sania Mirza) and mixed doubles (with Leander Paes) titles, and her win/lose record against winner of the women’s singles, Flavia Pennetta, is 3-1, so maybe if she still played singles she could have won that title as well?

He’s willing to legitimatize water boarding. That’s wrong for several reasons. Most compelling to me is that legitimatizing it means that currently serving personnel would be liable to being water boarded if captured. His willingness to put others in the way of torture so that he can be a t-shirt badass is despicable.

12/12 here, but since I never cook, I knew the boiling water question via general science.

An amusing footnote to this quiz is that I first saw it mentioned on RedState, when the author there tried to argue that the quiz was invalid because of the wording of some of the questions (e.g., alleged redundancy of including light wave and radio waves on the same list since they are both EM waves).

In other words, hyper-techanical parsing bullshit from a RWNJ who is deeply threatened by the fact that empirical truths good enough for all practical purposes can be discovered, and that science is the way to do so.

They’re exploiting their clients’ fragile mental states and tenuous grasp on legal reality in order to use them in the retreating actions of an already lost PR campaign. Absolutely - this group is advancing their own fundamentalist agenda. They actually advise clients to break the law.

And it’s maddening to see the way the media describe them, with no context at all, as “conservative law firms.”

Right, that evil Pew Institute, bashing Americans again!

To put “radio waves” and “light waves” as multiple choice options, marking one right and one wrong, shows only the ignorance of the person making the test.

Uh, no. Radio waves are at a much lower frequency than light waves, which is why we have two different terms for them. Cell phone signals use radio wave frequencies, not light wave frequencies. There’s a difference. The question wasn’t ignorant.

This has to be one of the most pitiful attempts at a persecution grievance whine I’ve seen.

re: #21 Skip Intro

Opinion among most liberal and mainline Christian and Jewish theologians has now reverted to the original Christian belief that Genesis 19 refers to a lack of charity and to ill treatment of strangers.

That’s not quite a complete explanation, a bit simplistic.

(Side note: Jewish theologians reverted to the original Christian belief? How does that work?)

It is based on Ezekiel 16:48-50:

48 As I live, says the Lord God, your sister Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done. 49 This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty, and did abominable things before me; therefore I removed them when I saw it.

Therefore the reasons given are:

1. pride;
2. excess of food and easy living while not helping the poor;
3. unnamed abominable things.

Already here we see that the sin is not limited to a lack of charity and to ill treatment of strangers.

Further elaboration is to be found in Jeremiah 23:14:

But in the prophets of Jerusalem
I have seen a more shocking thing:
they commit adultery and walk in lies;
they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
so that no one turns from wickedness;
all of them have become like Sodom to me,
and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.

While these people are “like” Sodom and Gomorrah, nevertheless the sins must have been commensurable, and here we see adultery and lies.

Finally Jude addresses the sexual sin of Sodom directly:

Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

(So NRSV; KJV: “fornication, and going after strange flesh”).

So a Christian interpretation that takes the whole Bible into account has to include sexual immorality, pride, lack of charity to the strangers, most likely also adultery, lying and other unnamed abominations.

I suspect this whole “they’re faking being black” thing is a continuation of the larger grievance that African Americans are caught up in either “playing victim” or “hustling”…either way, that any complaint about experience of prejudice—be it personal anecdote or observing a larger systemic problem—is a scam.

The image of a white person pretending to be black is like a subsequent elaboration of the idea that all complaint about racism is people seeking attention or money. Thus The Bad Kind Of White People* will seek to “cash in” on claims of racial discrimination.

*bearing in mind that absolutely all of this is part of sorting system wherein everyone without conservative values has somehow cheated to get what they have, doesn’t deserve what they want, and is driven by envy. Whereas those in the clique can be excused any vice or grievance.

Ayep, it’s the way their mind works: If you’re a minority criticizing inequality or discrimination, then they’ll dig through your trash to prove that you’re actually not subject to such yourself and thus are pulling a con. If you’re not part of the group, then you’re perpetuating lies in order to work a con. I had to go find that article, and it’s hilarious: Pew Gets Its Science Wrong in Attempting to Bash Americans | RedState

This has to be one of the most pitiful attempts at a persecution grievance whine I’ve seen.

Actually, it’s more than just a semantic difference. As you noted, the E-M spectrum is divided up into regions of descriptive, informative, and relevant bands. Encoding information in a light wave (defined as the IR to UV frequency, definitions, how do they work?) would be moronic because of the environment. You, know, can see it, so it would be sucking the signal up and making it kinda useless. Let’s encode info in the gamma wave frequency band and send it through the air and cook people.

It is not an ignorant gotcha question, it relies on a basic understanding of that thing wingnuts don’t comprehend, science. Sigh.

In most recent cases the malefactors have been right-of-center, but in FEMEN’s case the group fell under the sway of atheists who do not simply think religion is wrong, they hate it and openly attack it. When that happened, the group lost any ability to be constructive it had ever had and just became a club for atheistic jerks who happen to be female.

The main thing is, each visible light photon has from 178,000 (bottom of the red) to 312,000 (top of the violet) times the energy of a 2.4 GHz radio-frequency photon from a cell phone. Scientists need to figure out a way to test for Greek like they have for African ancestry. Remember how that guy got kicked out of the white supremacist group after discovering he was part black.

I wonder what’s happened to him since then.

I remember that Hungarian neo-Nazi who got kicked out of Jobbik after it was revealed that he was Jewish. But then the awesome part is that he totally owned it.

A partial victory for rationality:

Alabama adds evolution requirement, climate study for schools

Alabama is updating its decade-old science standards to require that students understand evolution and learn about climate change, topics that can still be controversial in the Bible Belt state.

Educators say the new rules — part of a major change that includes more experimentation and hands-on instruction and less lecturing — don’t require that students believe in evolution or accept the idea that climate is changing globally.

But public school students will be required for the first time to understand the theory of evolution. And teachers will be required to address climate change, which wasn’t a focus the last time the state set science standards in 2005.

The new standards take effect in 2016 after being unanimously approved by the Republican-controlled Alabama State Board of Education on Thursday.

No one spoke against the new standards when they were discussed at a board meeting in August, but supporters praised them as a step forward for the state.

[…]

Good for all the people in Alabama who have fought to finally get the state to accept reality.

However:

Textbooks used in Alabama science classes have carried a disclaimer sticker for years stating that evolution is a “controversial theory,” not fact, and the new course of study doesn’t change the warnings, which were advocated by Christian conservatives.

A committee that will review science texts could consider whether to remove or alter the stickers, officials said. A public hearing is set for Nov. 9 in Montgomery.

The main thing is, each visible light photon has from 178,000 (bottom of the red) to 312,000 (top of the violet) times the energy of a 2.4 GHz radio-frequency photon from a cell phone. It would take enormously more energy to transmit the same amount of information—unless you confine the visible light to a glass fiber, of course.

Speaking of Greece:

Babies, children drown as migrant boat capsizes off Greek island

Thirty-four refugees, almost half of them babies and children, drowned when their boat sank off a Greek island on Sunday, almost certainly the largest death toll in those waters since the migrant crisis began, the coastguard said.

Four babies, six boys and five girls died when the wooden vessel carrying them overturned on Sunday morning, about three miles (5 km) east of the small island of Farmakonisi, close to Turkey’s coast, the service added.

[…]

The migration crisis is forcing the politics of Europe. Germany starts to change how it deals with its borders:

As human flood continues, Germany slaps controls on border with Austria

Facing an unstaunchable flood of migrants and refugees, Germany on Sunday said it was reaching a breaking point and would implement emergency controls on its border with Austria, temporarily suspending train service and conducting highway checks along the main pipeline for thousands seeking sanctuary in Western Europe.

The move signaled the extent of the crisis confronting Europe, a region where a decades-long policy of open borders, once a source of pride and unity, is eroding as nations struggle to cope with a record flow of migrants. Only last week, Denmark temporarily closed a highway and suspended trains on its southern border with Germany, and French authorities have searched for migrants on trains crossing from Italy.

Some very silly things are being thrown about.

Get this:

Jeremy Corbyn and the trouble with democracy

[…]

The trouble - for some - is that many electorates tend to go for the same sort of political philosophy time and time again. It is mostly in those times of extreme stress like economic depression or war that the maverick figure comes to the fore: people like Silvio Berlusconi or Donald Trump on the one hand, or Alexis Tsipras and Jeremy Corbyn on the other.

[…]

The biggest problem with that little bit of purported insight is this: Berlusconi, Tsipras, and Corbyn have actually been elected to offices, while Trump has not.

And I doubt Trump will ever be.

This is what the 419’ers and other scammers do. Old people are the easiest marks, because they tend to be isolated (thus less informed) and because they are often emotionally vulnerable and easy to hook with a sob story. This is why the community of scambaiters exist - to tie up the scammers with pointless bullshit so that they spend less time targeting others who don’t know better.

Seems to me this is the real issue. They’re exploiting their clients’ fragile mental states and tenuous grasp on legal reality in order to use them in the retreating actions of an already lost PR campaign. In doing so they’ve exposed Davis to jail time, and are advocating she take actions that are guaranteed to send her back there. This isn’t the behavior of an ethical law firm.

For example, if I were her attorney, I would tell her to stay away from the office and hit the rightwing grifter circuit instead. That way her office can function, and she can keep pulling down her salary and shear the rubes at the same time without risking anymore jail time.

Honestly, I’m surprised we haven’t heard more about this in the wild north country. When we were operating in Somalia back in the 1990’s, we took in a large influx of Somali refugees. The wild north country is generally known as a place that is easy to migrate to. No, just like this one, where the local city council in Sterling Heights, MI denied zoning for a Mosque, despite the fact that the congregation had offered to meet their concerns. The “good people” cheered when it was announced. (For the love of all that you hold sacred, don’t go near the comments).

Be interesting to see how this shakes out, since this is the exact type of situation that RULIPA (Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act) was designed to handle. (as the idiots learned outside Nashville in something like the same situation). Of course if it were a Church or Synagogue that was being built and the zoning commission didn’t approve it, then that’s proof of targeted persecution.
