CA Gov. Jerry Brown Calls Out Ben Carson on Climate Change

“Please use your considerable intelligence to review this material”
Environment • Views: 67,334

California Governor Jerry Brown heard about GOP candidate Ben Carson’s rote recital of the Republican Party’s anti-science talking points on climate change, and sent him the following official letter, accompanied by a flash drive filled with scientific evidence:

Dear Dr. Carson,

I hope you enjoyed your visit to the Golden State. It’s come to my attention that while you were here you said the following regarding climate science:

“I know there are a lot of people who say ‘overwhelming science,’ but then when you ask them to show the overwhelming science, they never can show it… There is no overwhelming science that the things that are going on are man-caused and not naturally caused. Gimme a break.”

Please find enclosed a flash drive with the complete United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) “Synthesis Report,” the concluding installment of the Fifth Assessment Report, published earlier this year. This report assessed over 30,000 scientific papers and was written by more than 800 scientists, representing 80 countries around the world, who definitively concluded that: “…human influence on the climate system is growing, with impacts observed across all continents and oceans.”

This is just one of the thousands of reports authored by the world’s top scientists on the subject, including a study published just last month by Columbia University, University of Idaho and NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies scientists that found climate change has intensified California’s drought. These aren’t just words. The consequences are real.

Please use your considerable intelligence to review this material. Climate change is much bigger than partisan politics.

Sincerely,
Edmund G. Brown Jr.

Excellent try, Gov. Brown. But remember, Ben Carson is a young Earth creationist, and I suspect he will neither read nor understand the material on the flash drive you sent him. The entire Republican Party is denying the reality of climate change, and nobody who expects to run for president as a Republican will buck that trend. They’re anti-science and proud of it.

Blows my mind that educated people, especially those in the sciences, go down that road.

Part of the very appeal of Ben Carson (and for that matter, Trump) to the masses of wingnuts is that Ben is playing the I’m-just-like-you card. This is an appeal to a portion of the electorate who feel pushed around by, for lack of a better phrase, Big Scholar - the highly educated elite who collect themselves around major institutions in large cities.

Glad to see this given the crap Jerry Brown is taking for “caving in” to oil interests. It’s just like a point Charles made downstairs about Bill Clinton and Obama. Jerry Brown did the right thing here just like Obama did on Iran. Hungry? Half a loaf beats no bread at all.

Re-posted from downstairs:

According to Latino Rebels, about 20 students, many from Iowa State University, had gathered with signs reading, “Students Against Bigotry,” “A Vote For Trump Is A Vote For White Supremacy,” and “Mr. Hate Leave My State.”

She mentions the “white supremacy” sign and says she’s going to go rip it up, then rips up a different one.

Ha, not typical to take a logic course in grad school unless you’re in a philosophy program. (unfortunately)

Also, most schools’ grad course number listings start in the 500s or higher.

Been reading Ecology Of Fear. This varies by area of course but here in southern California the fire/plant/land ecology has been fascinating. Before mankind, the fires were random via lightning etc. That led to certain fauna prevailing. The native Indians would burn the Malibu hills/Santa Monica mountains as a part of their land dominance. Low intensity grass fires mostly. Now that’s protected forest and the policy is to put out any and all fires ASAP. What that means is some areas burn only after a decade or two, which escalates the fires. To 2000F! Leading to a third set of fauna because that kind of heat changes the microbial soil ecology on up through the food chain. Different microbes, different plants, means different animals and those that feed on them etc etc. The author makes a great case for letting it burn regularly by way of some recent research.

re: #20 Great White Snark

A lot of policy in the national forests at this point is to allow burns that won’t impact humans (and fight those that would cause damage). Preventative burning takes place too, when conditions allow.

Of course, conditions haven’t been amenable in CA for a while.

The question of how you handle burns at the urban interface, however, is a very different (and tricky) kettle of fish.

Plus you have a lot of people who aren’t interested in doing their part. They want the trees right up next to the house. That’s why they live in the forest. Defensive space? Who needs that? Dead tree removal is expensive and besides, nature just takes care of those things, right?

But this last week, one very strong reason my sister had a place to go back to was because just two weeks ago, they’d finished a fuel reduction pass, removing trees killed by beetles and the drought. It kept the fire out of the crowns and on the ground - and that kept it at a place it could be fought.

Yeah, pretty much so. You;d think they would have drawn the right lesson from the mid-terms.

More so, given that Obama has been the most liberal president in the last 50 years; you BUILD on that foundation to go further, not to say that he was no good at all.

I might be inclined to take Cornel West’s criticism of Obama at face value if he didn’t admit that it all stems from his resentment at not getting a ticket to the 2009 inauguration. The dude has basically just been on one long, petty ass revenge trip.

Been reading some of the stuff on twitter on how folks react to West. Granted, it’s just people here and there…but I think West is more what white progressives think is a leader in black progressiveism, rather than a leading black progressive himself. That’s a misstep, and it might be fatal, given that Sanders MUST get at least a split of the black and minority vote to be competitive.

Well I’m off to bed. Got a call this evening, going to help with a batch of soldiers doing a ‘stress relief transition’ from deployment. We do sort of a very basic scuba class (enough so they don’t kill themselves), then take them out for a dive at the quarry. Going to be running about 30 or so folks through tomorrow.

Weather is looking pretty good, and it’s always a good feeling helping out.

Take care and be careful, the stuff in the ‘apple juice’ bottle in the fridge is a sample for my physical later on.

West was very much at the forefront within black academic circles in 2007. Then after the election he felt that Obama dissed him and he’s been coasting on hate every since. Michael Eric Dyson wrote an excellent article in April all about the fall of West.

This is where Congreve’s insight on love decomposed to rage comes crashing in. West has repeatedly declared that he did 65 engagements for the presidential campaign in 2008, and was offended when the president didn’t provide tickets to the inauguration. (Obama later told me in the White House that West left several voice messages, including prayers, from a blocked number with no instructions of where to return the call, a routine with which I was all too familiar.) In a 2011 interview with Chris Hedges on Truthdig that appeared under the headline “The Obama Deception: Why Cornel West Went Ballistic,” West recalled his indignation during the Inauguration, when he arrived at his Washington hotel with his mother, and she noted that the bellman had a ticket to the event but not her son. “I couldn’t get a ticket for my mother and my brother,” West said. “We drive into the hotel and the guy who picks up my bags from the hotel has a ticket to the inauguration. My mom says, ‘That’s something that this dear brother can get a ticket and you can’t get one, honey, all the work you did for him from Iowa.’” Thus the left-wing critic found it unjust that the workingman and not the professor had a ticket to the inauguration. Only in a world where bankers and other fat cats greedily gobble rewards meant for everyday citizens would such a reversal appear unfair. J.P. Morgan might have been mad; Karl Marx would have been ecstatic.

It’s a long article and I highly recommend reading all of it. Dyson’s main point seems to be that West hasn’t published anything in years resembling his earlier groundbreaking academic output, that West is basically dry humping his own reputation and has been milking media attention as a political flamethrower.

Yes, I might have thought differently of West if he had engaged with other writers such as Coates, but his dismissal of Coates read for all the world as someone who couldn’t be bothered to read anything that couldn’t fit into a clipping service. It looked more like an ego driven campaign than anything else.

Given that the black community is very protective of the president to careless criticism (You might get somewhere saying that he was too cautious dealing with the Republicans, but not that he was morally bankrupt), I think pulling West to the front is not going to play well with that core of Democratic support.

re: #11 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I suspect they heard “the Train”. “Hearing the train a comin’” is an expression wild-land firefighters have for when a large wildfire is approaching. The sound from the fire sounds just like a large freight train coming down the tracks. It’s a pulsating sound that just gets louder as the fire approaches. I’ve heard it a few times.

It’s apparent that these people are leaving after the main fire front has passed as there is fire on both sides of the road. Had they left earlier during the fire front passage they could have been in trouble. Large fires such as this will consume all the oxygen out of the air causing the engine on their car to stall and then asphyxiating them.

When told to evacuate it’s stupid to wait. Go means GO!

klys (maker of Silmarils)  Sep 13, 2015 • 8:36:52pm

re: #46 Cheechako

In a lot of these smaller communities it’s unclear how much warning folks got, if any.

These ones did wait too long, but certainly in other interviews with evacuees that I’ve heard, they only found out because a family member called and called to make sure they knew, or similar stories.

In that context, it’s not surprising that there’s been a fatality. I suspect the likelihood of them finding more is not low, either. Sadly.

We’ll have to see. I would be curious to know how West’s statements play with groups like #BlackLivesMatter. A lot of blacks probably know the name but not some of his statements (I say this because, like most people in the world, I’m pretty sure busy blacks don’t have a lot of time to follow politics like we do). So we’ll have to see how this plays out. If he makes one of those statements on the trail, I suspect Sanders campaign will get a lot of sudden attention it wasn’t asking for. It’s going to have to be a home-grown grassroots play, then, because any other sort of organizing would have to use fairly experienced people in the community…who are the sort of people who DO follow politics. They would have to go directly to folks like @deray and @netaaaaa and convince them that Sanders means what he says, and that West’s past comments (which they actually would know about) are going to be modified.

(ETA: BLM activists aren’t stupid. They’d do research and listen to other folks, not all of which would be happy about West’s statements).

Still, the furore in Kentucky shows the extent to which some Christian Americans feel besieged by what they perceive as a strangulating godlessness. Given the freshness of the gay-marriage ruling, perhaps that paranoia is understandable.

I listened to scanners monitoring the fire most of yesterday. At this afternoon’s news conference the CDF said they spent 95% of their effort yesterday trying to get people out and not directly fighting the fire. I’m sure some people didn’t get the info because they were not signed up with the reverse 911 system, didn’t check their email, text messages, or tweets, or were not paying attention to what was happening around them.

Listening on the scanner, the Sheriffs Office and fire-fighters had a lot of people going door-to-door in every affected neighborhood warning people to get out immediately. There were several reports of home owners refusing to leave.

To compare her recalcitrance, as some admirers have, to the refusal of Rosa Parks to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, or to the 19th-century figures who declined to return runaway slaves, is absurd.

Absurd because, unlike slavery or segregation, gay marriage is almost completely victimless. Therein lies another fallacy of Ms Davis’s martyrdom: she makes it seem that Christians have been persecuted by the Supreme Court’s ruling, directly and en masse, when, in reality, only a few have been inconvenienced (and many more gay Christians stand to benefit). There is a difficult question about whether the handful of devout bakers and florists who would prefer not to cater to same-sex nuptials should be compelled to. The law must either require shopkeepers to treat everyone alike or condone their intolerance—equality is surely better.

Clearly, they are saying that there are victims of same sex marriage. Just not very many. And again I say, “WUT?”

OT, but in other news, there has been an explosion at a Kurdish associaton in Southern Stockholm. No reports of injuries, but windows on basement, 1st and 2nd floor are broken.
Stockholm County PD are classifying it as an act of terrorism, and think it may be related to unrest between Kurds and Turks in the center of the city earlier in the day.

It’s an old argument in new clothes.

The majority, that is, the society as a whole, can enforce its will on a small minority. This is done all the time.

The question is, are we going to label in these cases the minority as “victims”, an emotionally ladened term.

The issue of Christian bakers, florists, etc catering to gay weddings remains, for the foreseeable future, a state by state one. With the GOP’s allergy to rational discourse on the matter there’s no chance of any federal amendment of Section 2 of the ‘64 Civil Rights Act adding sexual preference to list of prohibited reasons for discrimination in public accommodations. So bigots in red states can breath easy.

Scott Walker to propose abolishing unions for federal workers

Seeking to revitalize his presidential campaign, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker plans to focus Monday on weakening labor by proposing to abolish unions for federal workers, create a national “right-to-work law” and eliminate the National Labor Relations Board.

At a Las Vegas manufacturer, he also plans to call for requiring all unions to hold periodic votes so workers can decide whether they should continue to exist, according to his campaign. He will also cancel President Barack Obama’s Labor Day order that federal contractors provide paid sick leave and work to end policies requiring some salaried workers to receive overtime — saying in some cases they should get time off instead.

“I will check the power of the big-government special interests, empower individuals, and protect taxpayers,” Walker wrote in a paper spelling out his plans.

THE LATEST: GERMANY EXPECTS 1 MILLION MIGRANTS THIS YEAR

Germany’s vice chancellor says the country can expect 1 million migrants this year, raising the previous estimate by 200,000.

Sigmar Gabriel said in a letter to members of his Social Democratic Party that “everything points the fact that we won’t have 800,000 migrants as has been predicted by the Interior Ministry but 1 million.”

[…]

Over 5,800 people fleeing their homelands have entered Hungary in one day, by far the highest number this year, as the country prepares to apply new immigration rules and tighter border controls.

Hungarian police detained 5,809 migrants Sunday, shattering the previous one-day mark of 4,330 set Saturday.

By 8 a.m. Monday, police said another 3,280 people had been detained for crossing the border illegally, taking Hungary’s 2015 total to nearly 195,000.

[…]

I wonder how long it will be before domestic backlash leads to more draconian measures taken to stop the flow of immigrants.

He said something to that effect, but that issue wasn’t really before him to decide, and the reality is that the licenses are valid since the clerk is just engaged in a ministerial duty her clerks can perform and no-one has standing to attack their validity.

That judge is such a putz. She can comply with the court order by “issuing” licenses which aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on?

No, it shouldn’t be. Kim Davis isn’t crazy, she simply considers reason to be of far lesser importance than obedience to God. That’s not insane, thou it’s quite wrong in her case.

My problem is with Fundamentalism of any religion. The world has changed, we have much more science since the Bible was written (and rewritten/poorly translated). Fundamentalists refuse to accept that life/society has changed.

The mentally ill also have problems seeing the world as it is.

Are they the same? Not exactly, but in many cases the comparison is an honest one. Both are extremely rigid in their thought process. Kim Davis crosses the line not because of what she believes, but because she thinks that god has instructed her to deny the rights of others. At the very least we can argue that her religion has clouded her judgment.

Fair enough, although my takeaway from the article is that when he said that, he was indicating he was not making a legal ruling on whether or not they were valid after Kim’s lawyers claimed that they would not be, while the state lawyers said they would be.

And again, I don’t really regard Kim’s lawyers as a valid source for the law.

I’m sure it’s been quoted here previously, but here it what the Kentucky Revised Statutes say:

402.080 Marriage license required — Who may issue.
No marriage shall be solemnized without a license therefor. The license shall be issued by the clerk of the county in which the female resides at the time, unless the female is eighteen (18) years of age or over or a widow, and the license is issued on her application in person or by writing signed by her, in which case it may be issued by any county clerk.

Effective: July 13, 1984
History: Amended 1984 Ky. Acts ch. 279, sec. 1, effective July 13, 1984. — Amended
1980 Ky. Acts ch. 74, sec. 1, effective July 15, 1980. — Amended 1978 Ky. Acts ch.
384, sec. 518, effective June 17, 1978. — Amended 1968 Ky. Acts ch. 100, sec. 14. —
Amended 1948 Ky. Acts ch. 42, sec. 1. — Recodified 1942 Ky. Acts ch. 208, sec. 1,
effective October 1, 1942, from Ky. Stat. sec. 2105.

402.100 Marriage license — Marriage certificate — Confidentiality of Social
Security numbers.
Each county clerk shall use the form prescribed by the Department for Libraries and
Archives when issuing a marriage license. This form shall provide for the entering of all of the information required in this section, and may also provide for the entering of
additional information prescribed by the Department for Libraries and Archives. The
form shall consist of:
(1) A marriage license which provides for the entering of:
(a) An authorization statement of the county clerk issuing the license for any
person or religious society authorized to perform marriage ceremonies to unite
in marriage the persons named;
(b) Vital information for each party, including the full name, date of birth, place
of birth, race, condition (single, widowed, or divorced), number of previous
marriages, occupation, current residence, relationship to the other party, and
full names of parents; and
(c) The date and place the license is issued, and the signature of the county clerk
or deputy clerk issuing the license

IANAL, but it seems clear that deputy clerk signature validates the license.

It’s the one-step-beyond pettiness that bugs me. The article says that the interim solution Ms. Davis (or her lawyers) are demanding is that she won’t stop the clerks from issuing the certificates, but that those certificates must not have her name or title on them {the previous demand} AND “must also state that they are issued pursuant to a federal court order” {let’s up the ante again, shall we?}

She (or lawyers) still insist that they are in charge and can set the terms, just short of the outright refusal that would land her back in jail. Draw it out, push the limits, see what precedents they can set for the next cases they’re probably lining up for additional clerks with ‘conscience’ concerns.

I don’t know how that is possible since she broke up several days ago, with the upper level clouds getting caught up into the stream that moved over the central part of the continent. Maybe this is the lower level air mass that has been adrift off the coast finally coming ashore. Anyway, we are desperate for rain here.

I look at the water vapor loop and just don’t see any remnant of Linda:

More KRS statutes. This one caught my eye:

402.990 Penalties
(10) Any county clerk who violates any of the provisions of KRS 402.110 or 402.230
shall be guilty of a violation.

402.110 says the clerk must make sure the license is completely filled per state requirements.

402.230 says the clerk must ensure the marriage license and certificate are properly filed, and the marriage duly recorded.

In my non-lawyerly opinion, 402.110 suggests the license cannot be altered in any way. Likewise, regardless of who signs the license, Davis as the clerk has to ensure the marriage is filed and recorded. If she refuses to “authorize” SSMs, she’s in violation of state law.

Wallace, Ross Barnett, etc. Really, MLK and Rosa Parks wanted to be treated as equals. Kim Davis wants to discriminate against gays because she doesn’t view them as equals. Comparing her to Wallace I think is 100% spot on and conversely saying she’s like MLK or Parks shows an ignorance of what the Civil Rights movement and civil rights as a whole is all about. Kim is free to believe whatever she wants to about gays but as a public servant, she must treat them as equals. She can believe whatever shit she wants in her bigoted church but if she’s going to continue to be an official of Rowan County, she has to accept their equality under the law. Sorry I know I’m rambling and I know everyone here gets that but it it’s amazing how many people “out there” don’t.

Well, yeah, KY has a statute that says SSMs from another jurisdiction are “void” and “unenforceable.” The SCOTUS decision invalidated that provision, but nutters do not accept judicial review except when it suits them.

The other problem I have with allowing Kim to get her way is it would really create a terrible precedent for county clerks to deem permits for whatever they have a religious problem with but that our law does not. I’ve asked this question before, do the wingnuts not understand how the SCOTUS works within the construct of the constitution? Ok, rherorical.

They don’t, and further don’t accept the principle of judicial review established nearly 200 years ago by the Marshall court. The nutters squeal like stuck pigs when SCOTUS strikes down one of their pet laws, but preen like barnyard cocks when SCOTUS rules in their favor (see which, Citizens United and the Hobby Lobby cases)

Talking with the Windstream tech support guy yesterday, he said it was an unexplained systemwide outage in Kentucky.
I told him I blamed Kim Davis because god was obviously smiting all of us here due to her stupidity.
We had a really fun discussion about eejits. He was in Louisiana and was bemoaning the fact that Jindal does the same thing for them.
And we both think Huckabee and Cruz are pathetic.

I honestly don’t think they do. Some I think like Cruz are panderers but Huckabee’s statements this past week to me showed that he doesn’t understand law at all. Or hell furthermore that he thinks that our society should put his God’s law before civil law. Huckabee basically outd himself as a theocrat and worse yet, he doesn’t see anything wrong with that.

He is desperate to prove to Iowa Caucus goers that he is the most God fearing candidate in the race. He, Santorum, Jindal and even Scott Walker badly need a strong showing in Iowa to remain viable in the race, but Trump is vacuuming up the xenophobes and Carson is getting the fundies.

I’m inclined to agree with you, not that Davis will be prosecuted. AG Jack Conway decided not to appoint a special prosecutor at the request of the Rowan Count Attorney. He said the ball is in Judge Bunning’s Court, but Conway is also in a very tight race for Governor, and the last thing he needs is to martyr Kim Davis anymore than she already is.

Italian priest defies Pope Francis’ call to take in refugees

An Italian priest has said he’d rather burn down his vicarage than take in refugees fleeing war and persecution.

Fr Angelo Chizzolini, from Lugiria in northwest Italy, made the comment after Pope Francis recently called the Catholic Church to take in as many refugees as it could in response to the current crisis.

According to the Times, Mr Chizzolini has previously offered refuge to non-EU migrants in the nearby area of Brescia, but they left the property in bad condition.

[…]

“As a private citizen I have a home in Brescia and I can do what I like with that, and yes, I said that rather than opening the door to a migrant, I would set fire to it.”

Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy’s far-right Northern League party, has expressed his support for Fr Chizzolini’s actions, posting “I’m with Father Angelo” on his Facebook page.

Strict constructionists strike me as being followers of a conservative religion. They alone understand the intent of the Founders. Oddly enough, the intent of the Founders is always completely in agreement with the views of the constructionist. It’s a gift. They ignore the reality that some of the words and phrases used in the Constitution often had very specific and commonly understood meanings at the time and that they no longer hold those deeper meanings for us.

It’s no accident that strict constructionists and theocracy advocates are both found on the same end of the political spectrum.

Published in 2000.

This statements of the Fourteenth were adopted for a reason. They were not without force and effect. They were intended by the framers of the Fourteenth to extend the jurisdiction and protection of federal courts to all rights recognized by the Constitution and Bill of Rights against actions by state government.

First, “any law” includes the state constitution, which is its supreme law, subject to the U.S. Constitution.

In debate on S. 61, the Civil Rights Bill, some Western senators wished to exclude Indians and Chinese from citizenship. Williams of Oregon argued that if Indians were citizens, then state laws that prohibited whites from selling arms and ammunition to Indians would be void.[12] At a time when the suppression of Indians and the seizure of their lands was proceeding in earnest, it was considered unacceptable to recognize a right of Indians to keep and bear arms. Thus, the Senate voted to define all persons born in the United States, without distinction of color, as citizens, “excluding Indians not taxed.”[13]

Although just three weeks earlier Saulsbury had opposed the Civil Rights Bill because it would prohibit states from disarming free negroes,[27] he now invoked the Second Amendment to protect the right of “the whole white population” not only to be armed but also to organize and operate as militia. This is a clear indication that the rights to be protected included the right to keep and bear arms.

Just another reason the Whackos wish to repeal the 14th. NRA drones might be suprised to learn this history.

U.S., China, UK experts to tackle vexed issue of gene editing

Scientists from the United States, China and Britain will come together to discuss the future of human gene editing, which holds great promise for treating diseases but also has the potential to create “designer babies”.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences and Britain’s Royal Society said on Monday they would join the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in co-hosting an international summit on the topic in Washington on Dec. 1-3.

True. But even with GOP policies, you actually lose more money than you gain. Tax rates go up on more Americans during GOP rule than Democratic. It was honestly a rhetorical question on my part. And I can’t tell you how much it annoys me to hear young women say “I’m not a feminist blah” even though they benefit from feminism’s accomplishments daily. It’s funny how even though many on the Left feel the Citizens United, or Hobby Lobby rulings were bad, poorly reasoned decisions, I don’t hear a chorus of Lefties calling on anyone to ignore them, or claiming they’re not the law of the land. Indeed, i hear many on the Left calling for a Constitutional Amendment overturning Citizens United.

OTOH, the Right is full of calls to defy or ignore Obergefell, claiming that it’s NOT the law of the land, or offering to provide armed escort to prevent someone defying the ruling from being jailed for contempt of court, or suggesting that states secede so as not to be bound by it.

Why is that, do you suppose?

Good morning, lizards. Mr. C. and I (and our offspring) returned from a few days on the north coast last night. Hikes were hiked, birds were observed as were very large redwoods, wine was quaffed, and a good time was had by all.

There was a bit of smoke and even ash along the coast up there from the fires in Trinity Alps/Klamaths, but as we came south and turned inland the smoke from the Valley fire became really thick. I coughed my way from Navarro to Healdsburg-even though the winds shouldn’t have been blowing smoke that direction.

Basically, all of northern CA is appears to be on fire.
Out of curiosity I checked on what the good folks at FR had to say about the fires and there is an interesting dichotomy. A few people (generally they appear to be people who have never been within 1000 miles of the western part of the country) are calling it either God’s judgement or the result of enviroweenies not allowing clearcutting (or something-they have no idea of what western forest management would look like, or cost.) The interesting part is that the rather larger number of commenters who do live in the west, or have friends or family here aren’t buying it and are calling out the stupid and selfish views of the folks with no actual knowledge of the situation for being selfish and smug.

She in short wants to be able to keep her job which makes 2.5 more than the median income owner of Rowan County while not having to do a part of her job. If you or I tried to get out of a key aspect of a job like that, we’d be fired. As a public official, she cannot technically be fired by the state. Here’s another scary thought. She’s a Democrat as we know, I bet her Republican opponents are even worse. I was reading about the rise of the GOP in the South and a lot of these guys got their starts by trying to out bigot the incumbent Democrat and that’s how many of them got their first success in the South.

Since homosexuality is against the sacrament of marriage, which is the building block of society, then it is against the common good, and the very Faith of our civilization, and thus is an enemy to the Christian people and should be treated as sedition. Let the heretics who believe in such license read where St. Paul refers to these sodomites as “deserving of death,” and also those who “approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:32), and let them dare say that homosexuality should be allowed in a Christian society … A small step is a great fall, and a little leaven spoils the whole batch; if we allow such wickedness to be done in incriminates [sic], then they will soon be done in great numbers. Crush the eggs of the baby serpents before they hatch. The sodomite, the atheist, the fanatic feminist, the Muslim — all such must be deemed as criminals and enemies to civilization, for they war against the Faith, promote death and hate life.

Last I saw, asshole, no one was forcing your client to perform the marriage. She lives in a country that has legalized SSM. That is the law. You or her don’t have to like it but if you’re going to be involved as a public servant where such law exists, your client is obligated to follow it if she wants to keep her job. She can’t have it both ways. Maybe a Muslim clerk should deny your application for something you want and we’ll see how you feel about religion being used as a reason to deny someone their legal rights.

This whole Kentucky thing is getting stupidly out of hand.

But you know what really gets me? I’ve heard very little mention by anyone that this is exactly why there is separation of church and state. Sure there is all kinds of talk about the first amendment, but it is only coming from the side of free practice of religion and the state not being able to stand in the way.

I am pretty sure the forefathers also knew there was a need for the religious to step out of the way of the states business. Why the hell is that not being pounded into the whole debate.

It’d be pretty easy to show how this is the very reason nothing is getting done in Kentucky, money is being wasted, people lives interrupted, etc. And for what? Nothing.

We have religious big mouths yapping and taking up all the space in the debate. We need someone from the Constitution side explaining the downside of religious people getting out of hand.

Hello media, Democrats, Constitutional scholars…you need to get in line and get your say. We need you.
