The companion on Doctor Who. Season 9.

That is going to suck. Series 7b pulled me out of a very dark place in my life. And The Name of the Doctor shifted both my outlook, and how I compensate for being Autistic. The episode helped me realize how Feminism helps men too.

Sorry to go OT immediately, but it does suck.

Ahhh. Thank you! Haven’t watched that show since David Tennant left. Truth to tell, the show was the most fun for me in its earliest days when they had cardboard sets and rudimentary special effects. Those actors had to sell that baby.

Hasn’t been the same since the 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane anyway…. /////// :)

More seriously, that’s as important a part of the show as the doctor’s regenerations.

Sounds as though the show speaks to you in good ways. Try to be of good cheer, though this is a change it may open up some new directions for the show. Our son is autistic. I know how precious something can be when it reaches you.

Yep. It showed me men can be the vulnrable ones, and let me open up to my friends more, and ask for help. To the point that I eventually asked my best friend, a Pakistani Woman, to act as my wali in terms of courtship.

Everything that makes us passionate is because it speaks to us in some way. For me, it was the thrill of discovery (especially in the earlier series).

If you are in Britain, you can use I-Player.

This is something I have groused about with everyone. If there was an online option, I would take it. I would be willing to pay $15-20 a month for a BBC streaming option, but they do not offer one outside of Britain.

There might be a chance that part of the problem is the exclusivity deal BBC has with Amazon for some shows. Offering their own streaming in the US might be a deal breach.

What is new… is that soon you’ll be picking your child from the bottom of a long glass tube:

World Egg Bank offers advanced testing method that identifies 6,000 mutations in more than 600 genes

A partnership with Igenomix has allowed the World Egg Bank to offer to couples seeking eggs for IVF procedure to undergo a new genetic testing that identifies 6,000 mutations in more than 600 genes. The mutations are the cause of 20 percent of baby deaths in developing nations and 10 percent of young children’s hospitalisation.

Through the use of the Carrier Genetic Test, or CGT, couples who seek egg donation are matched with a donor who does not have the same gene mutations as the father. That would help avert the future baby from being infected with one of the over 600 genetic disorders.

Oh, I never have to worry about avalanches at my house, believe me. And neither do 99.9% of the people in my county. See, there are laws against building habitable buildings in avalanche paths.

31
teleskiguy  Sep 15, 2015 • 12:23:01am

When I was living in Gunnison, CO I had a number of friends that lived in Mt. Crested Butte, CO, a separate town from Crested Butte proper. There are a handful of condos in Mt. Crested Butte (including a few that my friends lived in) that are in pretty questionable spots for snow slides, so much so that snow fences were built and the town forbids any access by anybody during the winter to the slide areas, on penalty of a $999 fine. No sledding, no skiing, no nothin’!

I imagine there’s some problem spots for some habitable buildings in Telluride, Lake City, Silverton, maybe outside of Aspen. You’re not going to see avalanches in Ouray, the mountains there are too steep to even hold snow. The highway (U.S. 550) above Ouray is a different story.

An avalanche? On this road? Impossible!

Well, it sprinkled for a couple of minutes an hour ago. Since then - nothing.

Watching the radar I see small bands of showers approach the land and then go *poof*, as if our dry land is too much even for the clouds.

Orange county is getting some rain though, just like they did during the blow-off of Hurricane Linda’s upper circulation and the strong monsoonal flow at that time.

RWW News: Sensenbrenner: Can’t Feed Hungry Children If We Fund Planned Parenthood

Youtube Video

“I’d like to know what your priority is,” he repeated, “Planned Parenthood or feeding hungry children?”

Smith pointed out that some of Planned Parenthood’s services, such as affordable contraception, testing for sexually transmitted infections and cancer screenings, might help the mothers of those poor children.

For Sensenbrenner, that did not compute.

“How can they be the mothers of the children when children are aborted through Planned Parenthood?” Sensenbrenner said.

WHO: Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group

MATERNAL deaths in the US are up, way up.

MOTHER’S RIGHT

According to the World Health Organization, since 1995, the maternal mortality rate in the United States has increased 250%. African American women are four times more likely to die in childbirth than Caucasian women. The United State’s maternal mortality rate is ranked at the top of developed countries. In 2013, eight countries reported an increase in maternal mortality rates. This list included countries such as war-torn Afghanistan, and the United States, which was the only developed country on the list. The United States spends three times more money on childbirth than Great Britain, yet our maternal mortality rate is over three times higher.

“Next thing you know, the police held onto me, the doctor stuck me with a needle and I was knocked out,” Brock told NY Daily News. “I woke up to them taking off my underwear and then went out again. I woke up the next day in a hospital robe.”

Brock woke up inside the Harlem Hospital psychiatric ward. For eight days, doctors and medical staff repeatedly injected Brock with sedatives and forced her to take lorazepam and lithium after misdiagnosing her as bipolar and delusional. According to medical records, doctors also repeatedly attempted to coerce her into denying she owned a BMW, was a banker, and has President Barack Obama as a follower on Twitter.

Trump showmanship is making us focus on a sideshow attraction. In the RCP aggregate, he gets only 29.8% of the half of Americans who are GOP. The first sane, realistic candidate, Bush, only gets 7.8 %. This is cause for relief, not panic.

I think Trump may be close to plateauing. However, it seems like Carson’s standing has raised considerably. The fact though is these guys are the only candidates not just with over 20% but with over double digits. But yeah it is cause for some relief when you consider that both would be terrible general election candidates.

Behind the Numbers: Poverty

On September 16, 2015, the Census Bureau will release new national data on poverty, income, and health insurance in the U.S. in 2014. As we get ready to crunch numbers, we thought it would be helpful to take a deeper look at what these numbers tell us—and don’t tell us—about poverty. We’ll get a somewhat fuller picture because for the first time, on the same date, the Census Bureau will be releasing data on poverty using two different measures: the “official” poverty measure and the “supplemental” poverty measure.” Here are a few FAQs on poverty and the Census Bureau data.

What does the official poverty rate measure?

The best are though the Republican voters that blame Obama for things that happened under Bush or better yet those Republicans who support Obama policy when you don’t tell them that it’s an Obama policy. I.E. why ACA is much more popular with Republican voters than Obamacare is even though they’re the same fucking thing. And of course, GOP strategists have no problem with that. They’d get rid of ACA and replace it with something similar just so they could deny Obama credit on the issue. That’s how craven these fuckers are. Dave In Austin already laid out how to avoid coming down with the plague: stay away from the rodents. Stay the hell away from them unless you want to sample one aspect of life in the 14th century. I would add; keep your pants tucked into your boots, apply insecticide, and don’t camp near rodent burrows.

It isn’t rocket science. There are warning signs posted.

11 foreign policy questions for the GOP candidates
-BROOKINGS

3. One of Hillary Clinton’s signature policies as secretary of state was the pivot to Asia. Do you believe that the United States needs to re-focus its attention and resources on Asia, or was that policy a mistake you would reverse?

7. In recent years, the United States has moved away from using large, international organizations like the United Nations or the World Trade Organization; instead, it has opted to deal with challenges like trade in smaller, more informal forums or bilaterally. Which path would you pursue and why? Should the United States revise its relationships with bodies like the UN?

11. President Obama has announced that he intends to end the American war in Afghanistan by the end of his presidency, with any remaining U.S. troops playing non-combat roles in Kabul. Do U.S. forces need to stay in Afghanistan and continue to fight? If so, for how long?

There is no good measure on weight, IMHO.

Do you feel good? Are you comfortable in your clothes? Can you do all you want to do?

Is your weight the cause of knee/foot/back problems?

Is your heart at risk? Is your weight from fat or muscle? (Muscle weighs more than fat)

I think these are better questions to ask.

I always think the doctors think I should weigh more than I do —for the amount of muscle I have. I felt best under 130 —to them that is underweight. at 160, they don’t bat an eye.

Yeah I have to agree. I think at 6’5, one should be over 200 easily. I can’t take BMI seriously when the mid 180’s is the highest amount that is considered “regular weight.” I don’t think I’m in perfectly good shape at 212 but I don’t think awful. I really think we have to look at our bodies, genetics, diets, etc when determining our ideal weights.

Thanks, I’ll check that out. I had been following a program called StrongLifts 5x5 but I think bad squat form messed up my ankle, and I have been afraid to start it up again. I should really see a doctor, but my family has seen the inside of the orthopedist’s office waaaaay too much this year…

Form is super important but footwear is very important too, especially on the major lifts as I discovered, again, this morning doing a deadlift and straining my back effectively ending today’s workout. If you plan to lift get some good cross trainers or better yet get some good weightlifting shoes. I have Adi-Power’s by Adidas, they weren’t cheap but are excellent for weight lifting (they are olympic weightlifting shoes). Based on the stuff in that book and on the site I built out a 5 day routine, know the ins and outs as far as nutrition and have managed to build a decent amount of muscle while still shedding the fat. I still have a few pounds to shed fat wise but am under 10% body fat.

here’s a recent pic after finishing 9 weeks:

That’s why they all look so pissed off all the time. They feel like shit.

Beckham is a size 00 (you’re not thin enough if you are a size 0 any longer). Those girls look to be a 0000.

Clearly you don’t think this conversation will offer anything of value. That’s fine, feel free to ignore it.

However, as a result of this conversation happening in the past, we have things like Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign, which is a hell of a lot better than no recognition at all. So I will continue to think it an important and necessary conversation to have, because it does impact a lot of people.

Up here in Canuckistan, the government has PSA’s for what they call Dietainment, which is all about body image for girls and supposed articles which are nothing more than ads for diet related products - because one can never be too thin. They are really good PSAs.

Frankfurt School.

Forgot the link:
en.wikipedia.org

A 21st-century conspiracy theory regards the Frankfurt School as the origin of a contemporary movement in the political left to subvert traditional western cultural norms, referred to as “Cultural Marxism” by theory proponents. It advocates the idea that multiculturalism and political correctness are products of critical theory, which originated with the Frankfurt School. The theory is associated with American conservative thinkers such as William Lind, Pat Buchanan and Paul Weyrich, and has received institutional support from the Free Congress Foundation.[51][52][53][54]

I have no issue with models being healthy and in shape, because that is something I can achieve if I work at it. (I do have problems with excessive airbrushing, because that creates unrealistic standards without ever making it clear that it is doing so.)

I do have issues with only thin women being used in advertising. Because heaven forbid we acknowledge that women have different body types, that not every woman is going to fit into a size 0 even if they starved themselves, that this is not the only standard men measure against for beauty out there.

You want to talk about where the insecurities come from, a non-trivial part is the fact that a HUGE number of women never see anyone in advertising that looks even remotely like them.

As someone who has been overweight all my life, I can tell you that this is perfectly normal for overweight people. You have excess fat on your stomach (and elsewhere) but you don’t sag until you are much older. I looked much like the gal on the far right for a good part of my life until my early 30s when I lost weight (and since gained it back again).

You’re right about the girl who is 4th from the left. It is a little weird if you look at it as a six pack. But I think it’s just where she is carrying her fat cells…because everyone carries them in different places and have differing appearances.

Put two women who are the same height and weight (to the letter) together and they will not look the same.

8 dead, 5 missing in southern Utah flash flood

Search dogs were looking Tuesday for five people still missing after being caught in a flash flood near Hildale on Monday that took the lives of eight others.

One of the five is a woman, while the other four are children, authorities said.

Meantime, the National Weather Service issued another flood warning in the area where heavy rains caused Short Creek to overflow its banks.

Being forced to conform to someone else’s religious norms has been an issue in public schools for a long time. While Christians have been more than happy to conflate the separation of church and state with oppression when Christian symbols are removed, this is one of the few times these same Christians have had to endure something even remotely close to what many non-Christians have experienced for decades.

My problem with that ad campaign is that every one of those women appears to have a toned stomach.

The point, I think, is that a woman can be healthy, and physically active and be beautiful.

The idea that super model body is the ONLY standard for health and beauty is stupid.

Most women who do sports, play tennis, golf, run, go to the gym, run around after kids, etc do not look like super models — and they are beautiful.

Starving is not beautiful.

By ‘it’, they mean 64 counts of embezzlement and stuff.

[…]

As such, Duran, a two-term Republican who served nearly two decades in the state Senate, can still assume her role as the secretary of state, and she will still have access to state funds.

Joseph Spindle, an assistant attorney general, asked the judge to deny Duran. But in the end she was released on her own personal recognizance on condition that she’s barred from entering any casinos or leaving the state unless she gives the court a 72-hour notice of her departure.

She’s also to refrain from the use of alcohol and drugs, and she and her immediate staff are not to talk about the case while she oversees the day to day duties associated with her job, the judge said.

Duran, who earns an $85,000 a year salary, was notified of the charges against her in late August, and they range from fraud and embezzlement after she allegedly drew on some of her campaign contributions for purposes of gambling while also also cashing personal checks that were supposed to go into her campaign contribution coffers.

re: #333 WhatEVs

Would it matter? I would say 90%+ of political ads are bullshit.

Trump is pushing back the way I had wished Dems did over all the bullshit they stated about Max Cleland, John Kerry, and a bunch of others. Ok, not really the way I would have done it (less dickishness, but pushback nonetheless).

Those attacks were just awful and then the RNC that year with their purple hearts that mocked Kerry. Yeah you could just feel the respect for the troops and their sacrifices there that they would mock an award received for being wounded in combat because the Democratic nominee had received some. Sorry, but I will never forgive the GOP for that show of classlessness. John McCain’s service was never bashed at the DNC and in fact always praised by Democratic candidates.

I’d never stop laughing if Trump manages to completely discredit those pillars of the GOP establishment and then makes such a horse’s ass of himself he completely blows the General.

60% of Americans think Trump is unqualified to be President. He’s unelectable, but he might win the GOP nomination. Everyone has expected that Trump’s numbers have to start coming down, but the GOP electorate is finally clued in that the GOP establishment has been blowing smoke up their ass, which is why none of the politicians in the race is polling above the single digits and Trump and Carson between them are polling about 50%.

‘Right Wing News’ gives this um uh wonderful explanation of why carson is unacceptable to wingnuts

Meanwhile, as Trump promises to rid the country of illegal aliens within 2 years, Ben Carson wants to give them guest worker status, and defends his stance with the doubtful claim that enforcing immigration law would lead to paying $4 for a tomato because only foreigners from the Third World are willing to work on farms.

To the extent it is true that Americans are unwilling to work on farms despite the alarmingly low labor force participation rate, this is a matter to be resolved by reining in the welfare state, not by leaving the border open.

Conservatives may also have a hard time swallowing this:

Carson says he probably wouldn’t have used deadly force against Michael Brown, the teenager whose fatal shooting by police Officer Darren Wilson sparked a national debate on race and the role of police.

Carson gave an interview to the Post-Dispatch on Friday afternoon after visiting Ferguson. When asked if he would have shot Brown if he were in Wilson’s shoes, Carson said: “It’s hard to say. I probably, knowing who he was, I probably just would have arrested him.”

Uh, Ben…

A Justice Department investigation concluded that Wilson had reason to fear for his life and thus couldn’t be prosecuted for fatally shooting the unarmed 18-year-old.

Suggesting that Darren Wilson had any choice is playing along with the liberal narrative — that is, ignoring reality and thereby splashing gasoline on the fire

State and local pay scales can get weird, the local Clerk of the Circuit Court (similar duties as Davis) here in Caroline County (pop. 27,000) makes $115,642 (a combination of state and local funding) but the Governor only makes $175,000.

Carson was born and raised in Detroit, he went to Yale for undergrad and Michigan for medical school. Then he worked at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and now lives in a Baltimore suburb. Given that personal history, I could totally see Carson not believing that people considered race “before Obama.” It’s completely ahistorical and almost as crazy as believing the earth (and possibly universe) is only 6,000 years old - but it’s entirely possible he didn’t experience much discrimination in his life so he doesn’t believe it’s real.

Update for Texas

Category: Texas
Published: Thursday, 06 August 2015 17:47

TEXAS UPDATE Here is what we have been able to piece together. The Special Forces have been mock infiltrating through Caddo Lake. From there they are moving in a southwestern direction through College Station, Caldwell, etc. To review the map scroll down on the home page. They are being moved by ranchers from town to town. In Bastrop is Camp Smith. We are not sure if they are ending there or continuing on throughout all the towns finally ending up into New Mexico. Volunteer turnout in Texas is lower than expected so it makes detection extremely difficult. Locals have been instrumental in providing us with this info though.

Update for California

Category: California
Published: Thursday, 06 August 2015 19:30

CALIFORNIA UPDATE: Our volunteers are reporting increased rail and convoy activity. Not uncommon especially for this time of year. Summer brings about National Guard training in addition to regular military training. It is common to see convoys on roads in southern Cali since they drive from base to base on occasion. No foreign or UN troops/vehicles being seen either. Some foreign troops are no doubt on US bases but that has been the norm for decades.

That’s it for Texas and California! I looked at the reports for the other states…not much there. All reports seemed to have been issued August 6th. All reports seem to have ended August 6th.

Damn that Obama!!! He can’t even scare the good people of Texas like he is supposed to!!!

By the way, is Louie Gohmert still on the job? He was so so worried about Jade Helm and then we heard he was going to quit his office because of Same Sex Marriage attacking Christians.

I’ll just assume fake until proven real.

Closest I can find is an interview Ben Carson did with Hugh Hewitt in 2014, where he said things were better for blacks before Obama.

It actually proved to be a minus for Kerry thanks to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth Lies. The last time a War Veteran won was in ‘88.

combat veteran. W Bush does count as a veteran.

Wise to do, when it comes to quotes on the Internet.

Especially when they are quotes that would be too good if they were true.

Thanks to his daddy getting him into a National Guard unit guaranteeing he wouldn’t get sent to Vietnam.

No doubt. Just saying that W does count as a veteran.

Fake until proven real and besides this guy has a treasure trove of equally messed up quotes.

Is that the Bob Pinciotti clause?

Ha. I thought that even if you served statewide that you still qualify as a veteran? Maybe some veterans can help me out here but I thought that was why we had the terms “veteran” and “combat veteran”.

You can make the point that Dr Ben Carson proves that one can be outstanding in ones field, and out standing in a field on everything else. Trump proves once and for all money cannot buy class or a soul.

He was on around then…but I can’t find that quote.

Yeah, but that was a different show. According to the DK article he was on the Mark Levin show when giving that quote, and I found no record of him appearing on that show in October.
