Writer for the Intercept Calls Daily Beast Columnist a “Porch Monkey”

Shocking racism from the far left for a change
WTF • Views: 65,812

Speaking of racism, as we were in the previous post, today a writer for Glenn Greenwald’s The Intercept website called Daily Beast columnist Maajid Nawaz … a “talking monkey.”

Some of Hussain’s readers reacted with surprise and outrage…

And at that point, Hussain doubled down and used an even more offensive racial slur:

Then he tripled down:

Nawaz’s response:

If Hussain worked for any other publication, this could very well get him fired. But the Greenwald crew is well-known for their double standards and hypocritical viciousness, so it’s very unlikely Hussain will even be reprimanded for using a noxious racial slur to smear one of his political enemies.

(Note that I have real differences with Sam Harris and Quilliam — the group Nawaz is affiliated with — and their approach to Islam, but that’s beside the point here. This kind of rhetoric has no place in any discussion, and especially not from a publication that purports to be anti-racist.)

Same here. I dislike both Harris & Nawaz, and I agree with Hussain’s disdain for people who are “clearly enriching themselves through native informing”, but the nasty racist slur was completely uncalled for and unprofessional.

“…Of course, the Bible contains barbaric passages, as well. But there are historical and theological reasons why Christians and Jews can now easily ignore them. Unfortunately, out of excessive concern not to appear biased, many liberals consider any discussion of the special problem posed by Islamism to be a sign of bigotry. This attitude helps bar the door to reform.”

I think they’re being a little simplistic about the theological freedom of Christians and Jews, and not making any allowance for the theological freedom of Muslims.

“Native informing” basically means airing your group’s dirty laundry—in this case the group being a religion, but it could also be race, etc.—to people who are known to be hostile to it, hence the Mel Gibson comment by Obeidallah. It’s not even just the airing of dirty laundry, it’s the making financial profit off of doing so.

I have seem this mammoth in person from a distance but even then the size is incomprehensible. This ship is 124 meters …. WIDE! And almost 400 meters long. It’s got a double bow and has an island like a super carrier. The purpose of this ship is the removal of obsolete drilling platforms, including the legs. It can haul both the upper structure and the support. Currently it’s anchored in the Rotterdam Maasvlakte harbour where she will be fitted it all kinds of goodies. The ship will be ready to sail beginning 2016.

I would add that the dislike of native informing is almost surely why many black people resented Bill Cosby’s Pound Cake speech because even though it was made to the NAACP, it was a public speech quickly seized on and used by many people who are hostile to blacks—i.e. it gives them an out, an excuse to say, “See? The black guy said it too, so I can’t be a racist.” That’s how some atheists & Islamophobes use people like Nawaz & Irshad Manji and it’s what causes other Muslims to dislike/distrust them.

Yeah that’s a good analogy. And I have to say while I am not black, the Cosby pound cake speech especially annoyed me because it just reeked of giving whites to give something to talk down to African-Americans about. Cracked later showed that a lot o the stuff Cosby said was complete bs so even if Cosby wasn’t a rapist hypocrite, that speech would still bother me. So yeah I can definitely see why someone like this inspires dislike and distrust. The racial slur is of course wrong but that’s something I think everyone here agrees on.

Facebook won’t treat a “dislike” as a vote to stop showing the post to other users. Rather, it provides a better option in cases where friends and family paste bad news, like a death in the family or a natural disaster. “What they really want is the ability to express empathy,” wrote Business Insider. “Not every moment is a good moment.”

Hewlett Packard Enterprise expects to generate approximately $5.0-$5.2 billion in cash flow from operations and $2.0-$2.2 billion in free cash flow in fiscal 2016. This includes separation cash payments of $0.4 billion and restructuring cash payments of $1.2 billion.

Excluding these separation and restructuring payments, HP expects Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s normalized free cash flow to be approximately $3.7 billion in fiscal 2016.

I’ll say something out there but we need more humanities majors and less business majors. NOt everyone is an entrepreneur.

I may be unreasonably biased, but I fail to see the purpose of a business degree at all. Judging by the performance of MBAs in real life, it would appear that what is taught is mainly how to line one’s own pockets while cratering the business.

Armed with Urban Dictionary no doubt.

By the way…I checked and sure enough…Urban Dictionary definitions #2 through #6 is just what one would expect.

But then comes some reconstruction of the phrase in #7

Urban Dictionary - Porch Monkey

Oh, well that changes everything.

NO IT DOESN’T!!

That’s like saying that the N-word is no longer a slur because in Shaun Of The Dead, Ed says, ” ‘S up, N***as?” as a friendly greeting to a group of white people.

Yep. A lot easier to use too. I don’t have the skills to design my own website but I could quickly create my own facebook page and hypothetically get you all to like it and upload media to my page. Look at this way. Companies still have about us fliers even though they still have websites. I’ve liked the personal pages of many a friend on facebook who is trying to establish themselves as some sort of artist. Some have been successful. Some I haven’t heard from in years.

A billion users.

Which is fine for big companies already known by just about everyone.

For a small company it is almost a complete waste. If no one finds your page what good is it. And with that thought in mind…how does one find your page if they don’t know you exist and if no one you link to knows you exist.

Well, at least in my opinion.

funny thing is, that only works if you run a big company. you run a small business, you do actually have to take care of your employees. I’m not really sure when the change happens, but it’s probably somewhere around the point when the owner/president of the company no longer knows everyone’s name.

The thing is, most Americans work for companies >100.

Nyet  Sep 15, 2015 • 3:14:21pm

So I read Nyberg’s response, and wow, is it dishonest. Calling herself a “teenage edgelord” (who thinks up these idiotic terms?) hides the fact that she was an adult when she was writing that stuff - she was 20 in November of 2006, so 19 or 20 at the time she wrote this:

web.archive.org

I suppose I would’ve had more credibility if I came out in the first post as both trans as a self-identified childlover, but I avoided doing that because I figured it’d mostly just turn into flames about me being a pedophile.

(Be sure to read the opening post too).

And this:

archive.is

having sex with a child doesn’t create a pedophile. what you’re thinking of is a child molestor, but even then it isn’t that simple.

couldn’t it be that children that had a positive, fulfilling, non-abusive sexual relationship with an adult as a child are more likely to realize such relationships are not inherently abusive, and be more likely to admit they’re attracted to kids (either to themselves or others)?

Note that this is not 4chan or an IRC chat. She was engaged in such discussions on several forums, sometimes against her wish:

archive.is

there is no reference of pedophilia before dj came along. I have no intentions of bringing it up here. she brought it up because it came up while I was in the #venusenvy chat. but for the record: yes, I am a pedophile. no, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. no, I don’t— I wouldn’t ever— have sex with children. no, I don’t look at child porn. beyond that, I really wish it’d just be dropped.

Doesn’t sound like someone lying for the sake of provocation. I don’t bye the “I was merely provocative” pseudo-defense. She was consistent for years, as the later chat logs (now admitted as genuine) also show.

Most importantly, she never addresses the things she wrote about her little 8 y.o. cousin, as well as posting the said cousin’s pictures.

The fact that she is attacked by racist, transphobic, misogynistic scum doesn’t change the fact of her being a self-admitted pedophile.

One of the biggest weather stories in recent years is the distinct lack of weather in much of the country—the drought is an ongoing, slow-motion disaster in the western United States, but abnormally dry conditions are starting to spread east. More than half of the United States is suffering from an unusual lack of rainfall, with much of the south and East Coast joining the west in their need for water.

I may still have vinyl copy of a CBS Mastersoud pressing of REO Speedwagon’s “High Infidelity”.

CBS Mastersound’s pressings were lame attempts to try to take marketshare from MobileFidelity and Naulituls for high-quality LP pressings, but where they fell short was their vinyl wasn’t up to snuff when compared to the Japanese pressed MSFL and Naultituls. At least the half-speed mastering was decent and the plating was decent, but using re-ground vinyl always sucks and is always easy to tell.

Engeleiter contributed $10,000 to the Republican governor’s 2014 re-election campaign, her largest political contribution in nearly two decades, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. “This whole anti-immigrant sentiment that’s out there in our politics right now is contrary to who we are. Because unless you are a Native American, your family came from someplace else,” Mr. Obama said. “Don’t pretend that somehow 100 years ago the immigration process was all smooth and strict. That’s not how it worked.” The grandparents and great-grandparents of politicians taking a hard line on immigration, he said, were also “somehow considered unworthy or uneducated or unwashed.”
When I hear folks talking as if somehow these kids are different from my kids or less worthy in the eyes of God, that somehow they are less worthy of our respect and consideration and care, I think that’s un-American,” Mr. Obama said.

I’m surprised the debate preparations are visible so far in advance. Perhaps the debate participants will spend the night before the debate in vigil before the altar to God-Reagan in the Library. The long, sordid antivaccine history of Donald Trump

Basically, like Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Donald Trump subscribes to a notion that has been massively discredited from a scientific standpoint. Mercury in vaccines does not cause autism. Like Andrew Wakefield, he believes that the MMR is associated with autism, no matter how much that idea has failed to hold up to scientific scrutiny. I realize that criticizing Donald Trump for being an antiscience idiot is rather akin to criticizing water for being wet or Donald Trump’s hair for having a life of its own—particularly when he’s preoccupied with real science.

Looks like the US isn’t the only country with right-wing anti-intellectual assholes in positions of power. Enter Japanese PM Shinzo Abe:

Humanities under attack [in Japan]

On June 8, all presidents of national universities received a notice from the education minister telling them to either abolish their undergraduate departments and graduate schools devoted to the humanities and social sciences or shift their curricula to fields with greater utilitarian values.

The bad tradition of evaluating academic learning and sciences in terms of their utility, with private-sector enterprises meddling in higher education, is still alive in Japan.

Indeed, policies related to higher education are under the control of the Council on Industrial Competitiveness, which is made up of nine Cabinet ministers, seven corporate managers and two scholars. One of the scholars is from the field of engineering while the other comes from economics.

A member of the education ministry’s panel of learned persons even said that the humanities and social sciences departments should be allowed to remain as they are only at the seven former Imperial universities and Keio University, and that those at other universities should be transformed into vocational training schools.

This person even went so far as to assert that students majoring in the humanities and social sciences at schools other than those eight institutions should be taught the Building Lots and Building Transaction Business Law instead of the Constitution, software programming for bookkeeping and accounting in place of Paul Samuelson’s “Economics,” and the skills of orally translating between Japanese and English rather than reading Shakespeare’s works.

Meanwhile, in the Dep’t of Good News: It turns out that billionaire asshat Shelley Adelson was basically swindled out of millions in his attempt to kill the Iran deal by chortling right-wing “political advisers.”

(h/t Talking Points Memo and the always-excellent Josh Marshall)

They got jack for their money - one of many reasons they’re now attacking Netanyahu for screwing the pooch with his March speech.

But it’s not just AIPAC. There were a slew of front groups spun up to oppose this deal even though the chances of scuttling it were dubious. The folks who ran those groups clearly soaked up a lot of dumb money the owners of which didn’t know that their dollars were almost certainly going to be wasted. Again, not just because the odds were long. These folks would have spent even on long odds - but because they were raising amounts of money that were just much more than could be spent.

Now a lot of those folks are seeing their scare ads still running or only ramping up after the whole thing is over. For whatever else we can draw from this, a lot of hard right DC operatives effectively swindled a bunch of billionaire oligarchs out of quite a nice chunk of money.

There is a kind of justice in this. Although Adelson still has billions more he can pour into buying GOP politicians, at least this much was totally and completely wasted.

Laugh, and let this self-beclownment by a hateful old man lighten your heart for tonight.

Our rabbi discussed Iran during his sermon this week, and he explicitly questioned the vitriol lodged against those who are in support of the deal. People like Cory Booker or Jerrold Nadler are excoriated or worse - or called collaborators with the Nazis and other similar imagery.

It’s language that is absolutely uncalled for, and yet there are people who think that the Democrats have sold out Israel.

Except they’ve done no such thing. And this is just one instance in 66 years of Israel’s history. Do we not remember when groups like AIPAC fought Reagan selling AWACS to Saudi Arabia. They lost.

AIPAC is on the losing side here too, but thinking that Israel should be a single party issue is repugnant and short-sighted. No party will remain in power for long, and it takes bipartisanship to see support for Israel maintained and nurtured.

As to whether it’s a good deal, bad deal, or the best deal under bad circumstances, that remains debatable - if we’re civil about it.

Clearly there’s a bunch of folks - especially the media- who don’t think civil debate is they way to go.

If I can turn back time….. /GOPers as Cher; they like their backdrops and big guns, but support for the actual troops and sailors? Not so much.

Great now I’m imagining Trump dressed like Cher.

There is a kind of justice in this. Although Adelson still has billions more he can pour into buying GOP politicians, at least this much was totally and completely wasted.

Laugh, and let this self-beclownment by a hateful old man lighten your heart for tonight.

More proof that the rich aren’t necessarily smarter than the rest of us. You don’t need much in the way of political savvy to see that there was little the Republicans could do to scuttle the deal.

Abe has such a long history, and he lost power once because of economic problems, then staged a comeback. His family’s history is well documented. His own positions harken back to the revisionist imperialists.

But the Japanese on the whole sort of just do democracy with such a long time constant that the people over 80 still have a large influence.

The bad tradition of evaluating academic learning and sciences in terms of their utility, with private-sector enterprises meddling in higher education, is still alive in Japan.

This utilitarianism is very dominant even here in the US. President Obama included.

There’s a complicated history here. E.g., political assassinations were surprisingly common in Japan well into the 20th century.

I think you’ll find most mid-tier character actors then to lean right, with some exceptions. Sci-Fi tends to have an inordinate amount of them - Dwight Schultz, Gary Graham, Nick Searcy, Bruce Boxleitner for starters.
