Image of the Day: The Icy Mountains of Pluto

From 11,000 miles away
Science • Views: 72,661

This is one of the most spectacular views of Pluto from the New Horizons spacecraft; more images here: Pluto ‘Wows’ in Spectacular New Backlit Panorama | NASA.

Just 15 minutes after its closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft looked back toward the sun and captured this near-sunset view of the rugged, icy mountains and flat ice plains extending to Pluto’s horizon. The smooth expanse of the informally named Sputnik Planum (right) is flanked to the west (left) by rugged mountains up to 11,000 feet (3,500 meters) high, including the informally named Norgay Montes in the foreground and Hillary Montes on the skyline. The backlighting highlights more than a dozen layers of haze in Pluto’s tenuous but distended atmosphere. The image was taken from a distance of 11,000 miles (18,000 kilometers) to Pluto; the scene is 230 miles (380 kilometers) across.

Cool. Skying on Pluto would be fun, but you would definitely need a spacesuit that wouldn’t brake easily.

He took some wallops, from what I hear and what little I saw. He didn’t break under the pressure, though he bent. But that’s better than fading into the background after spouting some canned lines, as Scott Walker did.

Once again, I was please to read that Rubio had done well. He avoided going after Trump directly, but he connected well with the audience and he was clear in his expressed views and plans.

His money, of course. The solar system is far to small to contain his essence.

I’m defining a new physical constant called the DonaldTrump. Just like Newtons/Coulomb is the unit for an electric field and Gauss the unit for a magnetic field, a DonaldTrump is unit of the Braggadocious-Ass field, otherwise known as measuring ego/derps.

The exact details of Pluto’s surface probably are young—considerable resurfacing would occur on each orbit as frozen gasses sublime to produce a thin atmosphere near perihelion, and then refreeze and precipitate as it moves farther away. Remember Pluto was closer to the sun than Neptune from 1979-1999. A half orbit later, in 2112, it will be getting less than half the heat from the sun that it did in 1989.

More directly, even in his home state Rubio can’t get enough people to pick him on a beauty list to move up the ladder against Trump.

Here’s the truth about Marco Rubio - the GOP establishment thinks more of him than the masses do.

Going by looks - Rubio, through no fault of his own, is too short and too cute (in a feminine way.) For a base that is trying to out-macho Lee Van Cleef as “the Bad”, that’s not a good thing.

Additionally, Huckster, Carson and Cruz have cornered the Jeezus market, not letting many for the rest of the clown car to vacuum up.

Maybe, just maybe, if the Kochs and their friends get their way and Walker in the nominee, they will pick Rubio as the VP. That’s his best chance of a future political career.

OTOH, if Rubio would be willing to not shill for his billionaire backers and rather connect with the everyday working people, and he’d have to change parties to accomplish that, he might find a future as a neo-liberal Democrat. But that might call for too much plasticity on his part.

It’s also worth noting that astronomer-astrologists 2,000 years ago had no concept of how big the solar system is, until Copernicus made the first estimates in the 1500s. Even then, he was off by a factor of 10, at least.

I wonder if the lack of references to America in the Bible prompted some Christians to propose Jews and/or white people came to America 2,000 years ago.

1. I didn’t watch much, but what I saw did not lead me to your conclusion. Politico didn’t agree with you either.

2. No, I don’t agree. Rubio can’t face Trump head to head, since he doesn’t have the numbers. What he can do is make his own case and not do a “Me, too!” regarding Trump’s DERPs while waiting for Trump to weaken. Just going straight in at Trump would avail him little.

Albert Van Helden, in Measuring the Universe: Cosmic Dimensions from Aristarchus to Halley, decides that the ancients’ estimate of the size of the Sphere of the Fixed Stars, that formed the periphery of the Cosmos, was no larger than the Earth’s orbit actually is. A really claustrophobic universe.

Reminds me of Firefly, where there were supposed to be dozens, if not hundreds, of planets just floating around like some kind of Aristotelian fever dream in a space no bigger than the inner Solar System, it seems like. Never could figure that out.

Rubio’s only positive in the debate was that he was more polished than his last appearance, which is to say he was better prepared for regurgitating the canned talking points that his campaign staff is feeding him. He offered nothing new, he’s not really anything different from the rest of the pack, and he’s pretty much the perfect example of what the GOP is supposedly railing against, namely an amateur who has no executive experience and no idea what he’s really doing.

About the smartest thing he said Wednesday night was that he’s not running for reelection.

Well, yesterday Hungary closed its borders, so the flow of refugees moved towards Croatia. But it’s too much for the Croatians:

CROATIA SEEKS TO REDIRECT MIGRANTS TOWARD HUNGARY, SLOVENIA

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said Friday his nation is overwhelmed by a huge influx of migrants and will redirect people toward Hungary and Slovenia as they move north in hopes of reaching more prosperous European countries.

It wasn’t immediately clear how Croatia’s move would solve the situation since both Hungary and Slovenia are taking steps to keep migrants out, deepening a crisis as people seek a route to refuge.

Huge numbers of people have surged into Croatia after Hungary erected a barbed wire-fence on its border with Serbia and took other tough measures to stop them from using it as a gateway into Western Europe. Croatia represents a longer and more difficult route into Europe, but those fleeing violence in their homelands had little choice.

Croatia closes borders as 13,000 migrants surge into overwhelmed nation

Croatia has been forced to close almost all of its borders with Serbia as it struggles to cope with a sudden surge of migrants desperate to cross into the EU.

Officials declared “this is not the road to Europe” as authorities moved to close seven of the eight road crossings after more than 13,000 migrants poured into the country.

The country has been utterly overwhelmed by the influx of people after initially stating it would allow migrants to pass through.

Photos: Japan’s lawmakers have a fistfight over pacifism

Japanese legislators who want to protect the country’s 70-year tradition of pacifism resorted to violence today (Sept. 17) to defend their ideals.

Photos of a violent scuffle in a legislative committee meeting this morning reveal the depth of controversy in Japan over a new security bill. The measure, backed by prime minister Shinzo Abe and his ruling coalition, would expand Japan’s Self Defense Forces’ mandate, allowing it to assist overseas allies. Since 1947, when the country’s post World War Two constitution was enacted, Japan’s military has been restricted to acting only in cases of self-defense.

According to the BBC, this apparent shift toward remilitarization is not supported by the majority of Japanese.

BREAKING!!! Carly Fiorina and Jesse Jackson have been friends since 2010 - at least

GotNwes has just learned by poring over alarmist right-wing, racist websites (like GotNewsDotCom) that presidential candidate and corporate albatross Carly Fiorina is good friends with a liberal, black man, the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

To our great surprise, this relationship has been going on since 2010, if not longer, but since we just found out about it, we’re calling it BREAKING!!! news.

That’s some fantastic fiscal responsibility there from Walker. To say nothing of the exquisite irony of screwing workers and businesses he says he cares about. His ratings have cratered, and the drain awaits.

His campaign is toast, and he’s apparently the last to know as he says he’ll soldier on. It’s particularly harsh considering that utterly forgettable George Pataki! is still in the race, and Walker’s campaign is hurting so bad that they’re stiffing vendors and now talking retrenching to fight in Iowa solely.

Holy fuck. I knew Katie was complete and total racist trash, but damn, she has been epically upping her game over the last couple of days.

Looking at her timeline, I think it’s safe to say that Brietbart now has an unapologetic white nationalist working for them.

Yep. If their scripture saw Muslims the way scripture sees Jews, they’d denounce Jews and Israelis the same way they do Muslims and Palestinians. I have no doubt whatsoever of that. It wasn’t that long ago that evangelicals especially Southern ones were overtly hostile to Jews. They still are hostile IMO but it’s more a subtle kind.

Didn’t Ann say something about Christians converting all Jews a few years ago? Ah yes, here it is:

Slash-and-burn columnist Ann Coulter shocked a cable TV talk-show audience Monday when she declared that Jews need to be “perfected” by becoming Christians, and that America would be better off if everyone were Christian.

Coulter made the remarkable statements during an often heated appearance to promote her new book on advertising guru Donny Deutsch’s CNBC show “The Big Idea.”

In response to a question from Deutsch asking Coulter if “it would be better if we were all Christian,” the controversial columnist responded: “Yes.”

“We should all be Christian?” Deutsch repeated.

“Yes,” Coulter responded, asking Deutsch, who is Jewish, if he would like to “come to church with me.”

Deutsch, pressing Coulter further, asked, “We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians?” She responded: “Yeah.”

Coulter deflected Deutsch’s assertion that her comments were anti-Semitic, matter-of-factly telling the show’s obviously upset host, “That is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews.”

Saw this on FB in my feed. Someone losing their mind over fact that the US might take in refugees from the Syrian conflict, but that somehow we don’t have the money to help American military veterans.

Nothing quite like conflating two completely disparate issues - or identifying a key problem with the GOP / conservative mindset.

They refuse to pony up funds to help veterans, especially those who have mental health issues, are homeless, etc., and figure that it’s the job of the person to bootstrap themselves into a better situation. Disposable heroes; that’s how the right sees military veterans. Use them for photo ops and ignore the real problems within the military and how we treat service members on separation from service, especially those who served in active duty and have mental health issues.

Then, they clamor for doing something regarding Iraq, ISIL, Iran, and the Syrian civil war, but don’t want to do anything about the refugee crisis, or allow in refugees that amount to a fraction of a single percentage of the US population.

Never mind that these same people who are demanding to fight ISIL ignore that this helps Assad in his civil war against the rebel forces, and that helping the rebels indirectly helps ISIL in their fight to take over Syria.

This leaves the US with choosing the least bad option - and it’s pretty damned awful - doing a bit of both - hitting Assad where we can; hitting ISIL regularly, and letting others do the heavy lifting (or not at all). It’s little wonder that Syria and Russia are renewing their vows and Russia is using the opportunity to stretch its military assistance some - it’s not like they weren’t there all along (Syria has been a Russian client state since before the breakup of the USSR).

But the same right wingers who demand action of Obama also turn a blind eye to Congress, which has been refusing to address Obama’s call for an AUMF on Syria since January’s State of the Union Address. Fancy that. Even the GOP knows that this is a mine field, and they’d rather avoid going on the record with a specified plan that an AUMF would provide, and instead let Obama carry the fight under his constitutional powers as C in C. It also lets the GOP snipe away at the President’s plans, so it’s a win-win for them too - except everyone loses in a situation like this, most of all the Syrians who are stuck between ISIL and Assad.

Interesting detail about the name: Though the original Kaga was completed as an aircraft carrier, she was laid down as a battleship and her name followed the Japanese convention for that type: Kaga, Tosa, Yamato, Musashi, and Shinano are all names of old Japanese provinces.

Right, and largely because of the embargo and travel restrictions our knowledge of Cuba is pretty limited. The more open we allow Cuba to be, the easier it will be to influence actions there. So, in effect, Cuba is taking a real chance here.

But of course for a certain segment of the U.S. any loosening of our policies towards Cuba means we are appeasement!

On espn.com, they’re reporting that the two football players from John Jay HS in Texas who combined to blind side and then spear a referee during a game are claiming that one of their coaches told them to do it. They say that it was payback for the referee having “missed calls”.

Given the fear which kids have for their coaches, I can totally believe this. A player is not going to intentionally attack a ref as these two did. A spur-of-the-moment bump or shove, I could see. That’s an emotional response. The event, however, show premeditation. If it is true that a coach told them to do it, my guess he’ll stay quiet and let the players take the heat cause he is a chickenshit and knows that it would mean his job.

I’m a High School Football coach. From an insiders perspective here is probably what happened:

#1. These two kids have a borderline unhealthy fear of their coach. They are probably easily influenced. But made an incredibly dumb decision. They are responsible for their decision.

#2. Their coach totally told them to do it. The extreme rare case would be players doing this on their own. The fact that two of them did it on the same play- 100% guarantee they were “ordered” to do so.

Oh, now people are starting to notice that Carly’s business record is awful - almost as bad as Trump’s? Really?

In a just world, Carly wouldn’t be in this race, because she’s spectacularly unqualified in any respect. Never held an elected office. No business experience anyone would want to repeat - unless your measure of qualification is getting golden parachutes for being separated from your companies after you left them in worse shape than when you started.

For Lucent, it includes an accounting mess that destroyed the iconic Bell Labs (spun off as LU) and for HP, it included overseeing a disastrous merger with Compaq and attempting to buy PWC’s consulting business at a grossly overvalued level (the Board squashed that attempt - and good for them, since IBM later bought the consulting business for something like $12 billion less than what Carly valued it at). HP’s board saved the company’s very existence from Carly’s awful business acumen with that non-deal.

Been hearing good things about the new David Simon show about the 28 year old guy who got elected mayor of Yonkers. Definitely something I intend on checking out on my off time this weekend.

Show Me A Hero, a 6 part mini series, has already completed a first run on HBO. If it is still going, or if you can catch it “on demand”, I highly recommend it.

We now do business with Russia, China, and even Vietnam. The US-Cuba policy is an anachronism of a world that no longer exists - the Cold War. If we managed to bury the hatchet with Vietnam, where 58,000 Americans lost their lives, then we can do it with Cuba.

re: #145 Smith25’s Liberal Thighs

I’m a High School Football coach. From an insiders perspective here is probably what happened:

#1. These two kids have a borderline unhealthy fear of their coach. They are probably easily influenced. But made an incredibly dumb decision. They are responsible for their decision.

#2. Their coach totally told them to do it. The extreme rare case would be players doing this on their own. The fact that two of them did it on the same play- 100% guarantee they were “ordered” to do so.

No question on #1. They’re big boys, they did it, and they need to pay the big boy price.

And I totally agree a coach told them to do it. If he doesn’t step up and reveal himself and instead lets the player take the full rap, the kids need to man up and reveal his name. A guy like that shouldn’t be around kids.

The Cuba embargo became an embarrassing souvenir that pols kept around for their own reasons. The old Cold Warriors kept it around to remind themselves that they were important and the rest needed Cuba to rail against. We aided both Japan and Germany in rebuilding after WWII. The slaves didn’t just provide brute labor; the reasons these Africans were brought to S.C. to cultivate rice was because they had the technical knowledge to do it because they had been rice farmers in Africa. The White plantation owners were just parasites stealing the fruits of the Africans labor and skill. So go fuck yourself, Katie; you are a racist ignoramus.

I see some are talking about the high school footballers that hit the ref. I wonder if there will be more and more of that type of on-field violence. I saw another video the other day of a player ripping an opposing lineman’s helmet off and then smacking the kid in the head with the helmet by swinging it from the mask. The kid that was hit got 10 stitches to close the cut on his head.

Are some of these kids picking up this behavior from some of the parents that we’ve all seen and heard about that run onto the field to attack a kid that hit their kid, or attack a coach that isn’t playing little Johnny enough or jump the ref that the parent thought made a bad call?

The behavior of crazy parents has gotten worse over the last 20 -30 years, the kids and everyone else may be thinking this is all normal.

Really if your first instinct regarding slavery is to call African-Americans who strongly support the Democratic party stupid because most Southern slave owners were Democrats, then you’re a terrible person. The response anyone should have when discussing American slavery is how fucked up it was and how even more fucked up it was that we had these great words about liberty and freedom and yet slavery prevailed in our country for over 75 years after the Constitution was ratified. Our contradictions are part of our history as a people and I don’t care if your ancestors didn’t own slaves or they had it tough as laborers or poor farmers. The fact is our agricultural economy was built on the back of slavery.

I think this shit has always happened and with the proliferation of video cameras and viral video you just get made aware of it more. 20 Year ago the kid pulling the helmet off and smacking the other guy with it would have been a local story at best assuming it even got into a newspaper. there are something like 40000 high schools in america which means that on any given friday night in the fall there are some 15000 games happening(assuming not all schools have football teams). I think CF is probably a reasonably good board member (in the sense of what corporations look for in board members). She presumably has a reasonably good grasp of business operations and does the right amount of poking at the CEO’s projections and assumptions.

If you’re numerate and know something about the industry, being a board member is in fact a very easy job the way it’s currently structured. It *should* be a lot harder but that isn’t the way the game is played.

As for her crap performance as CEO, all the evidence suggests that the CEO actually has very little influence on business performance.

Gamrat, who was caught up in a sex and cover-up scandal along with state Rep. Todd Courser, R-Lapeer, was expelled from her seat shortly after 4 a.m. Friday. Courser resigned at 3:12 a.m. Friday.

“What weighed really heavy on me this whole time, was I felt it was really important for my voters to have a voice in this. I continue to have to fight for them,” she said in an interview with the Free Press.

BTW - I do agree that a CEO in a tech-related business should indeed be in possession of this type of skill background, or an alternatively-acquired similar set of skills. That’s part of what I meant about the way CEOs get selected being bad, since many of them do not, in fact, have that background.

In fact, I think that nowadays, most leaders in any organization should have this type of background, since the alternative, as we see, is a bunch of Liberal Arts majors (grumble grumble) spouting off about whether things can be moved to the cloud and/or data-mined for game-changing insights.

On the other hand, Steve Jobs was a college drop out, and didn’t code or engineer. Sometimes what you need is vision and the right people around you.

One of my co-workers has no college experience whatsoever, and he’s the best sysadmin I’ve ever worked with. The best QA engineer I work with has a degree in psychology, not computer science. It’s certainly possible that Carly is “self-taught” in the same manner on tech stuff, at least well enough to be CEO and board member.

It’s my personal opinion but I think Steve Jobs is a really bad example of what makes a good CEO, as are several other people who essentially lucked out with a killer product in the right place at the right time.

The vast majority of businesses do not succeed that way. Because of the worship of people like Steve Jobs, though, they try. With bad consequences.

Isn’t trying, even if failing, worth something? I am not talking about CF because she failed and wound up fucking a lot of people up. But let’s take Jobs…ok, he succeeded spectacularly, but what if he tried and failed? Someone having a dream of doing something to try to realize it, whether they succeed or not, could wind up being the biggest “What If I Had Tried” moment that haunts them the rest of their lives.

SO lucky he did it at least two times and probably three times.

I think Jobs is an exception, but it’s more of a question of his getting his technical people in line with what the customer wants, as opposed to the usual schtick of trying to convince the customer to like what your product can do.

Fiorina is the poster child of rising from the bottom - and why it isn’t a good idea. If she is what happens when you promote “secretaries” (as she likes to tell everyone) to eventually make CEO, how often will that happen again? But that’s the problem, really. If you “do a Steve Jobs*”, waltz in to some established company, shake things up, fire a bunch of people and replace them with young hip go-getters…

Then you might make a bunch of money for the shareholders (but the people you fired are still fired) or you might crater the place and leave with a fat check and some board memberships. Either way you win - in some cases some people lose (the fired workers) while in other cases lots of people lose (the fired workers, the shareholders, people forced to endure your shitty products if you have an entrenched monopoly etc.).

The idealized Steve Jobs approach might be more appropriate in a differently-conceived version of capitalism with alternative funding models, career security and so on. Currently I think it only works plausibly in start-ups.

* This is not necessarily what actual Steve Jobs did, more an exaggerated version of what people do if they’re trying to be like Steve Jobs.

One of the hardest things about dealing with fellow Apple fans is the constant excuse making for Jobs’ straight-out viciousness and lack of humanity. Jon Gruber of Daring Fireball is a great example. Really smart insightful writer, but sometimes you wonder if he defend his family as hard as he defends Apple.

On the one hand, I get that it doesn’t make the products any worse or better. It just bugs me that intelligent people get all cultish about the guy and go “Well, you can’t change the world without treating people like pieces of shit.”

Maybe you can’t. Maybe I’m being naive. I just have a hard time listening to stories about former Apple employees who worked with him and simultaneously talk about how it was such a wonderful job, while almost laughing about the mental abuse he’d dump on them.

It sounds like a textbook abusive relationship.

Well, you can probably break down his success into several factors. A non-exhaustive list:

1) obsession with design/product coherence (probably a good thing but see below)
2) human nature leading to fanboyism among certain people over later Apple products and resulting willingness to pay a premium (is human nature and thus not really good or bad, maybe just inevitable - also to a certain extent just luck on Jobs’s part)
3) straightforward luck/right place/right time with particular product
4) being so obsessed in point 1) that he was a dick to people; drove them really hard and cut them out when no longer deemed useful (definitely a bad thing but probably contributed to Apple’s success)

Phoenix officials will consider disciplining a police officer who shot a mentally ill woman.

The Arizona Republic reports police were serving a mental health pickup in August 2014 when they say 50-year-old Michelle Cusseaux confronted officers with a hammer over her head. Sgt. Percy Dupra fatally shot her.

An internal Phoenix Police Department panel has found the shooting did not fall within policy. The Use of Force Board will send its findings to the Disciplinary Review Board, which will recommend suspension, demotion or termination.

[…]

I’m glad to hear that shooting the patient on a mental health pick up is outside of policy.

Right and here’s the thing. IF anything the ultra wealthy are more like parasites. They need us a lot more than they need them. Carnagie doesn’t become a multi-millionaire without people to use him. It is n capitalism and society’s best interests to treat labor like human beings. What people like Steve I think ultimately want is a neo-feudal society where we have to be grateful to our wealthy overlords. Now I will agree that we need entrepreneurs but entrepreneurs need to realize that without labor, they are merely men with ideas. What is the iPhone without people to make it?

The resolution, calling for “conservative environment stewardship” was endorsed by representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Carlos Curbelo of Florida, Robert Dold of Illinois, Dave Reichert of Washington, Pat Meehan, Ryan Costello, and Mike Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Richard Hanna and Elise Stefanik of New York, according to the National Journal.

Speaker Boehner’s tweet stream is such a cacophany of derp that it’s impossible to escape just how idiotic he sounds sometimes.

The facts show that the GOP doesn’t care about anything once it leaves the womb. That a fetus has more rights than the mother carrying it. The mother is simply a vessel without rights.

And somehow defunding PP helps women, because they lose access to one of the key sources of health care nationally - regardless of reproductive health or birth control (for which they are an important part). Millions of women lose (as do their spouses/loved ones, etc.) if PP gets defunded.

That’s what the GOP is after here - and the videos are meant to facilitate this - their veracity/agitprop status (and it’s definitely agitprop BS) is quite besides the point.

Damn!

Today, EPA is issuing a notice of violation (NOV) of the Clean Air Act (CAA) to Volkswagen AG, Audi AG, and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (collectively referred to as Volkswagen). The NOV alleges that four-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars from model years 2009-2015 include software that circumvents EPA emissions standards for certain air pollutants. California is separately issuing an In-Use Compliance letter to Volkswagen, and EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have both initiated investigations based on Volkswagen’s alleged actions.

“Using a defeat device in cars to evade clean air standards is illegal and a threat to public health,” said Cynthia Giles, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. “Working closely with the California Air Resources Board, EPA is committed to making sure that all automakers play by the same rules. EPA will continue to investigate these very serious matters.”

[…]

As described in the NOV, a sophisticated software algorithm on certain Volkswagen vehicles detects when the car is undergoing official emissions testing, and turns full emissions controls on only during the test. The effectiveness of these vehicles’ pollution emissions control devices is greatly reduced during all normal driving situations. This results in cars that meet emissions standards in the laboratory or testing station, but during normal operation, emit nitrogen oxides, or NOx, at up to 40 times the standard. The software produced by Volkswagen is a “defeat device,” as defined by the Clean Air Act.

The idea that one is entitled to a secure retirement because one “paid into it via taxes” is pernicious. It implies that an equivalent solution would be to allow people to receive that portion of their income and save independently for retirement.

The actual point of programs like social security is that each person is entitled to a certain standard of living (in the case of SS, at a certain point in their lives).

People like Crowder, by the way, believe in all kinds of implicit entitlements. They are entitled to live in safety and not be assaulted by armed gangs. They are entitled to work in large, complex organizations that depend on national-level infrastructure. They are entitled to purchase goods that pass various standards controls and not be duped by dishonest salespeople.

The only entitlements they don’t like are the ones enjoyed by people other than them and their immediate acquaintances.

That’s a good point. It’s a bit of an odd situation where the right wing is perhaps making a claim that is sort of true: social security is quite similar to other income security programs that we call “welfare”. To them, that’s a bad thing: they want to make retirement income a private, get-only-what-you-pay-in system. I guess what I’m saying is that they want to draw a distinction between those welfare-ish programs (for people unable to support themselves) and the other kind of private system (for those who can get paid enough), which would in fact make both less secure.

The distinction is real but the resulting policy is bad. Or at least, I think that’s what I’m trying to say. It’s after 12pm on Friday though so you never know.

Is Dim Jim, I mean Steven Crowder, burping about Social Security and how he “won’t see a dime”?

The “I won’t see a dime” business is bottom-of-the-derp kind of stuff. It’s been paying benefits for almost 80 years, and for everyone one of those years, some yokel like Steven has been predicting that he and his friends would never “see a dime.”

OK, Steven, I guess that means you better get out and do some real work then, huh?

It’s true that people who have never worked for a paycheck won’t see a dime.

I’ve started to consider putting the Conspiracy Compound on the market and getting the hell out of Texas.
The Irving clock incident wasn’t really the last straw, of course, but it’s significant because something like this happens EVERY FUCKING DAY IN THIS NUTHOUSE! The City of Irving itself is involved in a legal fight to keep a mosque from being built. Our governor thinks Labor Day is a day to celebrate union-bashing. Our school boards are run by superstitious quacks. I could go on and on. Texas will eventually turn blue but I am too damn old to wait on it, and there is no telling how far the downward spiral of lethal right wing redneck bullshit will go in the meantime.
If I take a summary of LGF “Crazy Texas” stories to Vermont, will they admit me as a refugee?

Damn. Crowder is determined to prove to all his Twitters followers and anyone standing in the area of his tweets that he is indeed proud to display how much a twit he really is.

That boy isn’t right.

Well, to be accurate, self-employed people who paid the full freight in self-employment taxes will get their SS benefits.
