Just 15 minutes after its closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft looked back toward the sun and captured this near-sunset view of the rugged, icy mountains and flat ice plains extending to Pluto’s horizon. The smooth expanse of the informally named Sputnik Planum (right) is flanked to the west (left) by rugged mountains up to 11,000 feet (3,500 meters) high, including the informally named Norgay Montes in the foreground and Hillary Montes on the skyline. The backlighting highlights more than a dozen layers of haze in Pluto’s tenuous but distended atmosphere. The image was taken from a distance of 11,000 miles (18,000 kilometers) to Pluto; the scene is 230 miles (380 kilometers) across.

He took some wallops, from what I hear and what little I saw. He didn’t break under the pressure, though he bent. But that’s better than fading into the background after spouting some canned lines, as Scott Walker did.

Once again, I was please to read that Rubio had done well. He avoided going after Trump directly, but he connected well with the audience and he was clear in his expressed views and plans.

The exact details of Pluto’s surface probably are young—considerable resurfacing would occur on each orbit as frozen gasses sublime to produce a thin atmosphere near perihelion, and then refreeze and precipitate as it moves farther away. Remember Pluto was closer to the sun than Neptune from 1979-1999. A half orbit later, in 2112, it will be getting less than half the heat from the sun that it did in 1989.

Here’s the truth about Marco Rubio - the GOP establishment thinks more of him than the masses do.

Going by looks - Rubio, through no fault of his own, is too short and too cute (in a feminine way.) For a base that is trying to out-macho Lee Van Cleef as “the Bad”, that’s not a good thing.

Additionally, Huckster, Carson and Cruz have cornered the Jeezus market, not letting many for the rest of the clown car to vacuum up.

Maybe, just maybe, if the Kochs and their friends get their way and Walker in the nominee, they will pick Rubio as the VP. That’s his best chance of a future political career.

OTOH, if Rubio would be willing to not shill for his billionaire backers and rather connect with the everyday working people, and he’d have to change parties to accomplish that, he might find a future as a neo-liberal Democrat. But that might call for too much plasticity on his part.

It’s also worth noting that astronomer-astrologists 2,000 years ago had no concept of how big the solar system is, until Copernicus made the first estimates in the 1500s. Even then, he was off by a factor of 10, at least.

I wonder if the lack of references to America in the Bible prompted some Christians to propose Jews and/or white people came to America 2,000 years ago.

Reminds me of Firefly, where there were supposed to be dozens, if not hundreds, of planets just floating around like some kind of Aristotelian fever dream in a space no bigger than the inner Solar System, it seems like. Never could figure that out.

According to the BBC, this apparent shift toward remilitarization is not supported by the majority of Japanese.

Saw this on FB in my feed. Someone losing their mind over fact that the US might take in refugees from the Syrian conflict, but that somehow we don’t have the money to help American military veterans.

Nothing quite like conflating two completely disparate issues - or identifying a key problem with the GOP / conservative mindset.

They refuse to pony up funds to help veterans, especially those who have mental health issues, are homeless, etc., and figure that it’s the job of the person to bootstrap themselves into a better situation. Disposable heroes; that’s how the right sees military veterans. Use them for photo ops and ignore the real problems within the military and how we treat service members on separation from service, especially those who served in active duty and have mental health issues.

Then, they clamor for doing something regarding Iraq, ISIL, Iran, and the Syrian civil war, but don’t want to do anything about the refugee crisis, or allow in refugees that amount to a fraction of a single percentage of the US population.

Never mind that these same people who are demanding to fight ISIL ignore that this helps Assad in his civil war against the rebel forces, and that helping the rebels indirectly helps ISIL in their fight to take over Syria.

This leaves the US with choosing the least bad option - and it’s pretty damned awful - doing a bit of both - hitting Assad where we can; hitting ISIL regularly, and letting others do the heavy lifting (or not at all). It’s little wonder that Syria and Russia are renewing their vows and Russia is using the opportunity to stretch its military assistance some - it’s not like they weren’t there all along (Syria has been a Russian client state since before the breakup of the USSR).

But the same right wingers who demand action of Obama also turn a blind eye to Congress, which has been refusing to address Obama’s call for an AUMF on Syria since January’s State of the Union Address. Fancy that. Even the GOP knows that this is a mine field, and they’d rather avoid going on the record with a specified plan that an AUMF would provide, and instead let Obama carry the fight under his constitutional powers as C in C. It also lets the GOP snipe away at the President’s plans, so it’s a win-win for them too - except everyone loses in a situation like this, most of all the Syrians who are stuck between ISIL and Assad.

That’s an emotional response. The event, however, show premeditation. If it is true that a coach told them to do it, my guess he’ll stay quiet and let the players take the heat cause he is a chickenshit and knows that it would mean his job.

On espn.com, they’re reporting that the two football players from John Jay HS in Texas who combined to blind side and then spear a referee during a game are claiming that one of their coaches told them to do it. They say that it was payback for the referee having “missed calls”.

Given the fear which kids have for their coaches, I can totally believe this. A player is not going to intentionally attach a ref as these two did. A spur-of-the-moment bump or shove, I could see. That’s an emotional response. The event, however, show premeditation. If it is true that a coach told them to do it, my guess he’ll stay quiet and let the players take the heat cause he is a chickenshit and knows that it would mean his job.

In a just world, Carly wouldn’t be in this race, because she’s spectacularly unqualified in any respect. Never held an elected office. No business experience anyone would want to repeat - unless your measure of qualification is getting golden parachutes for being separated from your companies after you left them in worse shape than when you started.

For Lucent, it includes an accounting mess that destroyed the iconic Bell Labs (spun off as LU) and for HP, it included overseeing a disastrous merger with Compaq and attempting to buy PWC’s consulting business at a grossly overvalued level (the Board squashed that attempt - and good for them, since IBM later bought the consulting business for something like $12 billion less than what Carly valued it at). HP’s board saved the company’s very existence from Carly’s awful business acumen with that non-deal.

I see some are talking about the high school footballers that hit the ref. I wonder if there will be more and more of that type of on-field violence. I saw another video the other day of a player ripping an opposing lineman’s helmet off and then smacking the kid in the head with the helmet by swinging it from the mask. The kid that was hit got 10 stitches to close the cut on his head.

Are some of these kids picking up this behavior from some of the parents that we’ve all seen and heard about that run onto the field to attack a kid that hit their kid, or attack a coach that isn’t playing little Johnny enough or jump the ref that the parent thought made a bad call?

The behavior of crazy parents has gotten worse over the last 20 -30 years, the kids and everyone else may be thinking this is all normal.

I think this shit has always happened and with the proliferation of video cameras and viral video you just get made aware of it more. 20 Year ago the kid pulling the helmet off and smacking the other guy with it would have been a local story at best assuming it even got into a newspaper. there are something like 40000 high schools in america which means that on any given friday night in the fall there are some 15000 games happening(assuming not all schools have football teams). Crazy shit is bound to happen at some of them.

I think CF is probably a reasonably good board member (in the sense of what corporations look for in board members). She presumably has a reasonably good grasp of business operations and does the right amount of poking at the CEO’s projections and assumptions.

If you’re numerate and know something about the industry, being a board member is in fact a very easy job the way it’s currently structured. It *should* be a lot harder but that isn’t the way the game is played.

As for her crap performance as CEO, all the evidence suggests that the CEO actually has very little influence on business performance.

State Rep. Cindy Gamrat, R-Plainwell, was expelled from office last week, and today she filed with the Allegan County Clerk that she intends to run in the special election to fill that seat.

Gamrat, who was caught up in a sex and cover-up scandal along with state Rep. Todd Courser, R-Lapeer, was expelled from her seat shortly after 4 a.m. Friday. Courser resigned at 3:12 a.m. Friday.

“What weighed really heavy on me this whole time, was I felt it was really important for my voters to have a voice in this. I continue to have to fight for them,” she said in an interview with the Free Press.

Todd Courser just announced on CNN that he will also be running again for his old seat.

BTW, this is not to say that Jobs didn’t have vision, drive, leadership qualities (albeit polarizing ones) and so on. It’s just that if you took Steve Jobs and plugged him in at any number of other companies, he would probably have very little positive effect on their performance. Even if he were still alive.

One of my co-workers has no college experience whatsoever, and he’s the best sysadmin I’ve ever worked with. The best QA engineer I work with has a degree in psychology, not computer science. It’s certainly possible that Carly is “self-taught” in the same manner on tech stuff, at least well enough to be CEO and board member.

I think the real reason why many of them despise him is quite simple, he’s not a cultural warrior and he thinks that poverty and climate change are a bigger problem than SSM and abortion. One of the hardest things about dealing with fellow Apple fans is the constant excuse making for Jobs’ straight-out viciousness and lack of humanity. Jon Gruber of Daring Fireball is a great example. Really smart insightful writer, but sometimes you wonder if he defend his family as hard as he defends Apple.

On the one hand, I get that it doesn’t make the products any worse or better. It just bugs me that intelligent people get all cultish about the guy and go “Well, you can’t change the world without treating people like pieces of shit.”

Maybe you can’t. Maybe I’m being naive. I just have a hard time listening to stories about former Apple employees who worked with him and simultaneously talk about how it was such a wonderful job, while almost laughing about the mental abuse he’d dump on them.

It sounds like a textbook abusive relationship.

Well, you can probably break down his success into several factors. A non-exhaustive list:

1) obsession with design/product coherence (probably a good thing but see below)
2) human nature leading to fanboyism among certain people over later Apple products and resulting willingness to pay a premium (is human nature and thus not really good or bad, maybe just inevitable - also to a certain extent just luck on Jobs’s part)
3) straightforward luck/right place/right time with particular product
4) being so obsessed in point 1) that he was a dick to people; drove them really hard and cut them out when no longer deemed useful (definitely a bad thing but probably contributed to Apple’s success)

The facts show that the GOP doesn’t care about anything once it leaves the womb. That a fetus has more rights than the mother carrying it. The mother is simply a vessel without rights.

And somehow defunding PP helps women, because they lose access to one of the key sources of health care nationally - regardless of reproductive health or birth control (for which they are an important part). Millions of women lose (as do their spouses/loved ones, etc.) if PP gets defunded.

That’s what the GOP is after here - and the videos are meant to facilitate this - their veracity/agitprop status (and it’s definitely agitprop BS) is quite besides the point.

Today, EPA is issuing a notice of violation (NOV) of the Clean Air Act (CAA) to Volkswagen AG, Audi AG, and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (collectively referred to as Volkswagen). The NOV alleges that four-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars from model years 2009-2015 include software that circumvents EPA emissions standards for certain air pollutants. California is separately issuing an In-Use Compliance letter to Volkswagen, and EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have both initiated investigations based on Volkswagen’s alleged actions.

“Using a defeat device in cars to evade clean air standards is illegal and a threat to public health,” said Cynthia Giles, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. “Working closely with the California Air Resources Board, EPA is committed to making sure that all automakers play by the same rules. EPA will continue to investigate these very serious matters.”

The idea that one is entitled to a secure retirement because one “paid into it via taxes” is pernicious. It implies that an equivalent solution would be to allow people to receive that portion of their income and save independently for retirement.

The actual point of programs like social security is that each person is entitled to a certain standard of living (in the case of SS, at a certain point in their lives).

People like Crowder, by the way, believe in all kinds of implicit entitlements. They are entitled to live in safety and not be assaulted by armed gangs. They are entitled to work in large, complex organizations that depend on national-level infrastructure. They are entitled to purchase goods that pass various standards controls and not be duped by dishonest salespeople.

The only entitlements they don’t like are the ones enjoyed by people other than them and their immediate acquaintances.

I actually disagree with this, per my comment above. I do agree that this is how the US government has been forced to sell income security programs to its population, due to the unfortunately non-social outlook that prevails among people here.

We all depend on the goodwill of others at some point in our lives. Drawing a distinction between “welfare” and “entitlements” is part of the right’s toolkit to undermine the legitimacy of both.

Even if he’s selfish enough to really want to keep every cent of his away from the undeserving moochers, it’s hubristic in the extreme to believe that you can actually plan with any confidence for retirement, or that an unaccountable private financial company is going to be around and willing in 30 years time to make good on the claims they make today.

That’s a good point. It’s a bit of an odd situation where the right wing is perhaps making a claim that is sort of true: social security is quite similar to other income security programs that we call “welfare”. To them, that’s a bad thing: they want to make retirement income a private, get-only-what-you-pay-in system. I guess what I’m saying is that they want to draw a distinction between those welfare-ish programs (for people unable to support themselves) and the other kind of private system (for those who can get paid enough), which would in fact make both less secure.

The distinction is real but the resulting policy is bad. Or at least, I think that’s what I’m trying to say. It’s after 12pm on Friday though so you never know.

I’ve started to consider putting the Conspiracy Compound on the market and getting the hell out of Texas.
The Irving clock incident wasn’t really the last straw, of course, but it’s significant because something like this happens EVERY FUCKING DAY IN THIS NUTHOUSE! The City of Irving itself is involved in a legal fight to keep a mosque from being built. Our governor thinks Labor Day is a day to celebrate union-bashing. Our school boards are run by superstitious quacks. I could go on and on. Texas will eventually turn blue but I am too damn old to wait on it, and there is no telling how far the downward spiral of lethal right wing redneck bullshit will go in the meantime.
If I take a summary of LGF “Crazy Texas” stories to Vermont, will they admit me as a refugee?
