Catholic GOP Rep. Paul Gosar Is Boycotting Pope Francis Because of His “Leftist Ideology” on Climate Change

Anti-scence and proud of it
Politics • Views: 59,438

In one of the most pathetic examples this week of Republican foolishness, Arizona congressman Paul Gosar, a Catholic, has proudly announced that he’s going to skip Pope Francis’s speech to the House of Representatives, and you can probably guess why.

Writing for far right website Town Hall, Gosar explains that he’s upset the Pope won’t be talking about the stuff that obsesses him, like Planned Parenthood and the persecution of Christians (yes, that again), and will instead be focusing on climate change.

According to Gosar, climate change is based on “false science” and leftist ideology, and the climate has been changing “since first created in Genesis.”

The earth’s climate has been changing since God created it, with or without man. On that, we should all agree. In Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment (written with the consultation of that great seminary the EPA and its embattled head Gina McCarthy), he condemned anyone skeptical of the link between human activity and climate change and adopted the false science being propagated by the Left. If the Pope wants to devote his life to fighting climate change then he can do so in his personal time. But to promote questionable science as Catholic dogma is ridiculous.

Just one more example of the Republican Party’s complete disconnection from reality, sticking their heads in the sand while nearly every scientist in the world is sounding the warning siren over our warming climate. We could laugh it off, but unfortunately it’s deadly serious when one of America’s two political parties is locked in a self-destructive cycle of anti-science idiocy and denial.

Is the Pope Catholic? American Conservatives are not sure.

My favorite was Santorum telling him he’s not a scientist and people pointing out that Francis actually has a doctorate in chemistry.

#6 HappyWarrior:

He doesn’t have a doctorate, but he did study chemistry (ncronline.org):

It is true that Pope Francis studied chemistry and worked as a chemist prior to entering the seminary. But Jorge Bergoglio never graduated from university prior to entering the seminary.

But he did study more chemistry than Gosar has studied the Bible.

Well, exactly. It goes well beyond Catholicism. Conservatives have this big philosophical hard-on for objectivism* and things really meaning specific things, but that all goes out the window as soon as someone comes along with facts they don’t like.

* Witness regular right-wing deployment of, e.g., “post-modern gobbledegook” and/or “typical subjectivist blather”. Also whining that “in the old days, words used to mean something”.

funny thing about the “since Genesis” bit… the Catholic Church, since Pius XII in 1950 has basically taken the position that they don’t know if the creation story of Genesis is actually true and has said that Catholics can believe the world/universe was created in six days or over a longer period (based on evidence they see) and not be subject to further judgment from the Church.

I have a theory that they really don’t doubt the cause of climate change at all. They actually don’t care if it happens, or possibly even want it to happen. My theory is that they think they will benefit from it. It’ll be like some sort of Great Tribulation that will lead to some theological Millennial Kingdom. Furthermore, since they have been busily and successfully plundering the economy, they will ride it out one way or another while everyone else suffers.

I know, it’s just a theory. But, I can’t believe they really believe what they say.

I remember reading wingnuts fantasizing about the Pope giving Obama a hard time about Abortion, because that would be so awesome! Because the Pope has such untouchable moral authority!

And now those same folks are calling the Pope a communist, and telling him to stay out of politics, and that he doesn’t really have any moral authority to talk about the effects of economic inequality.

There’s literally nothing that would get them to rethink their positions. Florida will be underwater and they’ll still be saying “It’s just weather! If you can’t predict the temperature tomorrow, how can you tell what’s going to happen in 10 years?”

That’s not a real bomb either. It’s a mock up of basically all the various components EOD personnel can expect to find in a very sophisticated terrorist explosive. Interesting thing about the photo of Ahmed’s clock is that (aside from the plug) it gives you hardly any idea of scale, making the clock/circuit board look much larger than it actually is:

The GOP doesn’t give a hoot about the middle class. If they did, they wouldn’t be hating on the safety net, let alone the ACA and entitlements - SS, Medicare, and Medicaid, which the recipients pay into in order to obtain their benefits (they are entitled to their earned benefits).

I think it’s absolutely crystal fucking clear that NOBODY a the school thought it was a bomb, because they almost certainly have procedures they are supposed to follow in case they think there’s a bomb, like get the fuck AWAY FROM IT, evacuate the school, etc.

I know this from personal experience, from the Younger Boy’s first week of High School, where a former student made a remarkably incompetent attempt at a massacre.

Rep. Gosar seems to have an interesting grasp on the teachings of The Bible so let me help him out here:

Rep. Gosar voted to slash $40B from the food stamp program

Matthew 25: 37-40

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Gosar is also a pretty wealthy individual:

As Lee Fang explained, Gosar “owns substantial real estate, including a building worth up to $1 million, a dental practice worth up to $500,000, an antique store worth up to $500,000, and other assets.” He also makes $174,000 a year as a member of Congress.

What did Jesus have to say about wealth accumulation? Mark 10: 24-25

…24The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25”It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Interesting developments in the Bowe Bergdahl case today.

General: ‘Unrealistically idealistic’ Bowe Bergdahl does not deserve jail sentence

The Army general who carried out an investigation last year into the alleged desertion of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl believes that a jail sentence would be “inappropriate,” despite the massive search caused by him walking away from his unit’s outpost in Afghanistan.

Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl testified Friday in Bergdahl’s case that he found the soldier “unrealistically idealistic” about other people and remorseful for the massive search his actions caused. He left his platoon’s outpost, Observation Post Mest in Paktika province, with plans to run 19 miles to the larger Forward Operating Base Sharana, cause a disruption and get the attention of a general.

There is a book I read a long time ago, bought it. Black Man With A Gun.

It is a pro-2A book written by a black man. The author describes the history of the American Fear of the Black Man.

I learned a lot. It’s unfortunate we don’t learn this stuff in school.

Also, this essay about the 14th Amendment has a lot about 2A rights and minorities.

It all boils down to ‘FEAR OF SLAVE REVOLT”.

Slave codes have always prohibited slaves from defending themselves. Jim Crow laws could be interepreted to deny a black man from even having a piece of wood in his house that could be considered a club.

The Invisible Empire describes first hand the many reasons a black man was lynched in the Anti-Bellum South. Often it was the perceived intent to defend himself.

This is why I have to support the 2ndA. Until we have a clear Constitutional right to Self-Defense it is the only source of that right written in the Constitution.

Two Tennessee lawmakers are showing the rest of the United States the way to strike a lethal blow against the judicial tyranny of the Supreme Court. Here is how it’s done: by states with marriage amendments declaring the Court’s ruling on sodomy-based marriage null and void.

The Constitution is utterly silent on the subject of marriage and homosexuality - you will not find either word anywhere in the Constitution - which means, according the Constitution as written, dealing with both is a matter for the states under the 10th Amendment.

What Tennessee does with regard to marriage and homosexuality is quite literally none of the federal government’s business. This includes, of course, the Supreme Court, since it too is under the authority of the Constitution. It is the Constitution which is the supreme law of the land, not an unelected oligarchy of five tyrants wearing black robes.

In the cyberpunk RPG I designed set about 50 years from now I created a new religion; The Gracelanders. They believe that Elvis was the second coming of Christ.

They’d already had a theological split like the Sunnis and Shias. The First Gracelanders believe that Priscilla was sent by God to help bring God’s Plan about. The True Gracelanders think she was sent by Satan to stop said Plan.

They hold debates about theology frequently with weapons and explosives.

Correct link here:

Figures.

Of course, mixed in with the sensible - better mental health treatment and improved background checks - is the absurd; that gun/magazine bans have been failures and that concealed carry permits should be recognized nationally.

Except that on per capita basis, states with strict gun control have lower homicide/suicide rates involving firearms than those with loose gun control rules. That directly contradicts his claim (as if facts ever mattered to him). He simply makes assertions and assumes them to be true and no one challenges him on any of them.

Oh, and he thinks that the military should let its troops carry weapons on base and at recruiting centers at all times, even though the military long ago realized the danger of having all those guns - lots of suicides and homicides; the securing of the firearms reduced rates of both.

He thought it would shock the students there that the founders of the NAACP were Republicans but the students knew that and RAnd just looked like the patronizing asshole he is. And man that plantation one, it is just so condescending. I don’t use “Uncle Tom” for AA conservatives by the way either out of respect but likening sticking with a political party especially one that has supported Civil Rights to a slave plantation, I can’t even.

In the 1860 election there were 4 candidates on the ballot. Independent, Republican, Democrat and Southern Democrat. Democrat and Southern Democrat were not the same thing. As a practical matter….it takes AT LEAST two years to get face to face fluency in another language…if you’re able to work at it.

For written fluency for legal stuff, written, stuff, it takes seven years. (Kinda makes sense, no?)

Exactly there were a lot of Democrats including many of Lincoln’s generals. And Stephen Douglas before he died in 1861 offered his full support to Lincoln and the union. Now I think his policy of popular sovereignty was greatly misguided but he was a Union man through and through. If one reads Godowin’s Team of Rivals, you’ll see that Lincoln had many Democrats in his administration include the Secretary of WAr.

One thing I keep seeing from anti-choice types is the belief that women who seek abortions are misled, or don’t know what’s REALLY going to happen, or are being ‘preyed on’ by the ‘Abortion Industry’. It’s like the claim that PP is carrying out Black Genocide!!!!!

It’s like they can’t imagine a woman understanding how the whole gestation thing works, and if they only knew, they’d be HORRIFIED!

They infantilize adult women, and especially adult black women.

I have to return to this. All species are hard-wired to perpetuate. DNA survival. So, I get that the idea of abortion seems to go against all we are. What so many can’t face is that survival means so much more than making babies.

It means providing for them, it means caring for them, it means resources. Not just money and food, but emotional resources. Parents who the time and energy for that child.

Children who are not wanted, do not a thriving society make.

my grandfather who passed away in February, came to the States in the early 60s after the Cuban revolution. he died in his 90s, he never spoke very good English but he could speak some. After my grandmother died in 1998, his English really started to slip. One of my mom’s cousins, who has lived here for 50 plus years, and who worked at LAX for many of those years doesn’t speak a word of English to this day. From what I remember of sociology in college, with immigrant communities, the first generation usually learns enough of the new language to survive (and often live in ethnic enclaves where they can speak their native language); the second generation tends to be bilingual; and, by the third generation the language tends to be lost.

It’s an interesting bit how the predominately rural residing Irish became urban dwelers. But yeah, people tended to stick in these neighborhoods because often times entire extended families would emigrate together. A whole bunch of the villages where my mom’s mom’s parents were from all ended up in the same part of Pennsylvania together. When we looked at my great grandfather’s baptism certificate, my grandmother recongized the name of his godmother- turns out she was the mother of the man she remembered being my great grandfather’s best pal.

As a practical matter….it takes AT LEAST two years to get face to face fluency in another language…if you’re able to work at it.

For written fluency for legal stuff, written, stuff, it takes seven years. (Kinda makes sense, no?)

And immigrants WANT to learn English….

And since new people enter this country all the time….

I applied to be an ESL volunteer tutor at our local community college. I found it requires a year committment to be at the same place at the same time. I would be paired with an student and that student would be depending on me to show-up.

I can’t guarantee I can be there. bummed me out. I was hoping it was more like a reading lab that students would drop-in and volunteers would be there to help them. I could be depended on to be there x amount of hours a semester —at various times.

I think there are a lot of us who could help, but we can’t make the committment required.

Hey, I help my neighbor and nail tech when they have questions… .(and young american’s when they can’t seem to get their tenses correct). We swimmed this weekend.

my grandfather who passed away in February, came to the States in the early 60s after the Cuban revolution. he died in his 90s, he never spoke very good English but he could speak some.

Yeah that sounds right with the communities. My mom’s parents grew up speakin their parents’ native language along with English but if you ever met my mom, you’d never guessed that the last immigrant in he family came only 38 years before her birth.

I always thought one of the defining points of catholicism was its centralized authority, effectively making the Pope the voice of God on earth? At least for the true catholics.

And yet the self-proclaimed true catholics ignore the Pope when it suits them.

My understanding is that he’s supposed to be infallible on matters of dogma.

Exactly how it worked in our family. My grandfather was brought to America as a recruited craftsman and he spoke English but was it was a broken form. My father spoke great English, was well read even without a full education (dropped out of school early as oldest son in the bad economy of post WW2 and helped the family) and could speak Slovak. My brothers and I…not a lick of Slovak.

my mom and her siblings fall into what’s been deemed the 1.5 generation. they were between the ages of (I think) 6 and 12 when they came over. so they have memories of Cuba, though fuzzy, and kind of lived in both worlds. what complicates it in my family is that my mom, her brother, and her sister all married white people (though my uncle’s second marriage was to a Mexican woman, so there’s more Spanish). I was the first born of the next generation and while they tried to teach me both languages, I didn’t speak for a long time. This was the late 70s, early 80s, so they figured they were confusing me and went English only. Years later, we figured out that it wasn’t that I was being confused, it was just that I didn’t want to talk to anyone (usually still don’t). I do still wish I would have learned both languages growing up - though I can usually keep up if I concentrate.

ETA: my sister’s ex-husband’s family is also Spanish speaking (Cuban and Columbian), but her kids don’t seem to be learning much Spanish either. Which is a shame, I think.

My brother doesn’t know much Spanish but his wife speaks is pretty fluently still so they’re trying to have their daughter learn both English and Spanish. I really think it’s a great idea since I think it will make her a much better student. A funny story though. The GOP’s War on What’s Inside of Women

Speaking of double standards, when Carly ran for Senate, she got busted making fun of her opponent, Barbara Boxer’s looks. Yes, GOP id Donald Trump was quoted in Rolling Stone saying about Carly, “Look at that face!” And Americans were all stunned at how out-of-bounds that was. Yet to California voters, it sounded vaguely familiar. While running against another woman, Carly got caught on a hot mic saying, “Look at that hair! So yesterday!” So for Carly to suddenly be a martyr for all women whose looks have been cruelly put down and unfairly criticized is beyond disingenuous.

Volkswagen Group must recall 500,000 diesel cars for cheating on smog tests

In a Notice of Violation (PDF) sent to the automaker, the EPA said that the defeat devices on Volkswagen Group’s cars “render inoperative elements of the vehicle’s emission control system.” If the car senses that it’s operating normally, the defeat device reduces the effectiveness of some or all of the car’s emission control components. However, if the car is undergoing an emission test, the emission control systems will be allowed to function normally.

According to the EPA’s letter, the software on Volkswagens and Audis was installed on the cars’ electronic control module and determined whether the car was driving normally or undergoing testing “based on various inputs including the position of the steering wheel, vehicle speed, the duration of the engine’s operation, and barometric pressure.” If the car was driving under normal conditions, the car’s nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were increased by 10 to 40 times above the level of NOx emissions permitted by the EPA.

Assholes. Of course, if the GOP has it’s way we won’t have an EPA any more and this shit will go undetected.

Conservatives had a great deal of sympathy and wanted to give a pass to a guy who murdered 500 women and children in My Lai (Lt. Calley) but they want to throw the book at or execute (Trump and others) a nut who walked off his base and got captured by the enemy. Conservative moral values on display.

Sheesh. It is obvious the reason they hate Bergdahl is because he didn’t kill one Taliban or other Muslim radical…let alone 500. Priorities as to what constitutes a good soldier and what can be forgiven.

From The Hill article:

Self-reliance, the billionaire real estate magnate added, is a vital precaution should law enforcement have its resources stretched too thin.

“Our personal protection is ultimately up to us,” Trump said. “It’s just common sense. To make America great again, we’re going to go after criminals and put the law back on the side of the law-abiding.”

Kewl, so I guess Muslims need to make a run on the gun stores after last night’s comments. I’m guessing the RWNJs keep overlooking the fact that the 2nd applies to everyone, including Muslims (though I’m sure they’d love to change that).
